Tin production and export from the Far East are still a long way off from the prewar figures. The Malayan Peninsula, which had a rather good start directly after the war largely because of stock piles found in Singapore and elsewhere, has since been hampered in the rehabilitation of its tin mines and dredging operations by material shortages and, more recently and more severely, by revolts and attacks of communist elements and gangster bands. These hindrances make working in the mines dangerous and form a daily threat against the valuable and highly vulnerable dredges. Contrary to the conditions in Malaya are those on the tin islands of Billiton, Banka, and Singkep-all in the Netherlands East Indies-where the Dutch have re-established peaceful relations with the population. Dutch efforts since the fall of 1945 have been rewarded by continuously increasing production, extension of production facilities, and return of moderate prosperity, complete safety, and all-out co-operation among the population ? native and Chinese ? to the benefit of all concerned.

A field study was conducted to evaluate seat designs on shuttle cars. Eight operators participated in evaluating seat designs on the basis of perceived levels of vehicle jarring/jolting and discomfort. Researchers also measured the levels of vehicle jarring/jolting. Four basic seat designs were compared on low and mid-coal seam shuttle cars during production operations at two underground coal mines. Two seats were currently used on the shuttle cars and another two were NIOSH designs. Objective data were collected using accelerometers with pre-amplifiers and filters connected to a data recorder; whereas subjective data were gathered with a visual analog scale (VAS) and a questionnaire. Results from measured levels of jarring/jolting showed that the NIOSH Seat L2A smoothed out bumps better than any other seats. Using the VAS, mid-seam and low-seam shuttle car operators rated the levels of jarring/jolting and discomfort lower with the NIOSH seat than the other seats. Questionnaire responses indicated that operators rated NIOSH seat designs as more comfortable. This research will provide the industry with better seat designs for isolating jarring/jolting in vehicles. Furthermore, researchers plan to improve the NIOSH seats using information gathered in this study.

The physiocemical properties and industrial uses of the clay mineral montmorillonite are reviewed. Montmorillonite is the most abundant species of the smectite clay mineral group and is the predominant mineral composing bentonite deposits. The crystal structure, chemical composition, exchangeable ion type, and small crystal size are responsible for several unique properties, including a large chemically active surface area, a high cation exchange capacity and interlamellar surfaces having unsual hydration characteristics. The type of exchangeable ion Na, Ca and/or Mg has a major influence on industrial and chemical uses of montmorillonite because of their hydration characteristcs. Natural occurrences of Na montmorillonite in commercial quantities are geographically limited, but Ca-Mg montmorillonite deposits are known world wide. Foundry, well drilling, pelletizing and civil engineering constitute the major uses of montmorillonite, but the total array of uses of montmorillonite exceeds that of any other mineral.

In 2005, Black & Veatch Corporation began designing a raw water conveyance system for San Luis Obispo County from Lake Nacimiento to the city of San Luis Obispo. The first element of the water transfer system will be a raw water pump station and lake tap. The wet well of the pump station will consist of a concrete lined shaft approximately 180 feet deep constructed in the very incompetent sandstone of the Vacqueros Formation. The lake will be wet tapped at approximately 172 feet below grade using a slurry earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine. The 48 to 72-inch finished diameter microtunnel will be approximately 500 feet in length. Construction is scheduled to begin in the winter of 2007.

"This study reports a new property of the important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes, glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin- NADP oxidoreductase, that can catalyze a one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V). During the enzymatic reduction process, molecular oxygen is reduced to H2O 2 , which reacts with the reduced metal complexes to generate hydroxyl radicals. Since the hydroxyl radicals have been suggested to play an important role in Cr(VI) toxicity, this study provides a basis for a recent observation that Cr(VI) mutagenesis is strongly oxygen dependent. These results also point to an enzymatic pathway for the metabolism of some metal ions and concomitant generation of hydroxyl radicals. l. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this communication is to report that some important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes (glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase) can catalyze one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V) and simultaneously reduce molecular oxygen to generate Hi02 and, eventually, the ""OH radical. This finding is significant because (i) the known substrates for the flavoenzymes are organic species and not metal ions, and (ii) the report on the enzymatic formation of the ""OH radical provides a new pathway for understanding the mechanism of genotoxicity of some non-ferrous metal ions. For example, it has been suggested that OH radical is likely to be the major species responsible for Cr(VI) genotoxicity [1-5). The 'OH radical is generated through the reaction of Cr(V) complexes with cellular Hi02 [4,5]. Cr(V) itself is known to be generated from Cr(VI) in various biological systems, in particular, microsomes [ 6), mitochondria [7] and mitochondrial electron transfer chain complexes [8]. However, no specific enzyme responsible for the Cr(V) generation has been identified except possibly glutathione reductase [4]. In this study we have used ESR and spin trapping techniques to show that the flavoenzymes can generate Cr(V) and provide a catalytic redox cycle for 'OH formation in such reactions. The 475,000 square feet (44,125 m2) structure has five levels below ground and four above, making it the largest embassy in Washington DC. A vertical soil nail wall was used as the primary support of excavation system for the project. The soil nail wall was irregularly shaped, benched in areas, and up to 98 feet (29.9 m) in height. The soil nail and shotcrete system consisted of approximately 1,600 soil nails and 50,000 square feet (4,645 m2) of exposed shotcrete wall surface. Design and construction challenges included soft soil conditions, inside wall corners, underground utilities, seismic impacts from blasting, and logistical and political factors. Design and construction challenges included soft soil conditions, inside wall corners, arched walls, underground utilities, seismic impacts from blasting, and logistical and political factors.SITE INVESTIGATIONInformation obtained from the geotechnical investigation revealed about 10 to 20 feet (3.1 to 6.1 m) of a loose to medium dense fi ll material placed during previous site activities. The fi ll material was underlain by a silty sand and sandy silt residual soil derived from the natural weathering of the underlying bedrock. This soil sequenced naturally from a medium dense to very dense material through natural weathering of the underlying bedrock. "As part of the Namew Lake project a mill was constructed to treat 1900 tpd of ore grading approximately 0.90% CU and 2.45% Ni to produce copper and nickel concentrates.Nickel occurs mainly as pentlandite and violarite while copper occurs as chalcopyrite. Two main ore types are present1 lower grade disseminated sulphides in a talcose ultramafic gangue and a higher grade solid sulfide with a granitic breccia matrix.Primary crushed ore from underground is treated on surface in a conventional closed circuit crushing plant using 2-stage cone crushing. Crushed ore is conveyed to storage and then fed at a controlled rate to a grinding circuit employing a rod and ball mill with hydrocyclone classification. Rougher flotation separates and cleans nickel and copper sulfides from waste materials followed by a high lime separation circuit to separate the minerals into final concentrates. Dewatering is achieved through use of high capacity thickeners and pressure filters prior to delivery to a loadout area. The crushing and milling control is highly automated.Plant design was based on metallurgical samples obtained from drill cores. After the first year of operations, plant results compared favourably with design projections.INTRODUCTIONThe Namew Lake Project is a joint venture partnership between Outokumpu Mines Ltd. (Canada) and Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company Ltd. (60%). The project included construction of a mine and milling complex to treat approximately 500,000 tonnes per year of copper-nickel ore grading o.91% and 2.44% Ni. Known reserves are estimated at 2. 65 million tonnes. The deposit is located approximately 65 km south of Flin Flon (120 km by road) and about 5 km east of the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border. The decision to construct a concentrating facility was made June 15, 1987 and construction started a week later. The facility, designed for 1900 tonne per day throughput, was ready for commissioning in September 1988. Outokumpu Engineering of Finland was chosen to prepare metallurgical flowsheets, select and develop plant layouts, and provide construction management. Kilborn (Toronto) contributed detailed engineering for civil, structural, mechanical and electrical components and outokumpu Equipment of Canada, the design, the supply, and commissioning of the instrumentation package. Hudson Bay undertook the initial metallurgical test work and preliminary design work."

The Nanisivik Mine is located 750 km north of the Arctic Circle at the north end of Baffin Island in the Canadian High Arctic, and has been in production since 1976. The paper describes the regional and local geology and the current mining and mineral processing operations, including recent innovations in each area. The Nanisivik zinc-lead deposits comprise Mississippi Valley type sulphides in a block-faulted sediment sequence of Proterozoic age. The deposits formed in two mineralizing stages by replacement of the carbonate host rock. Exploration techniques adapted to the permafrost environment include high frequency EM and ground probing radar. Core drilling is done with calcium chloride brine but trials with heated flushing water indicate potential for cost reduction. The predominant mining method at Nanisivik is room and pillar. Cut and fill is used in some satellites to the main zone. Due to the permafrost, dry drilling is employed in the underground mining. The permafrost enhances ground stability, permitting large underground openings and, as a result, the use of relatively large scale mining equipment. For power conservation, a remote control system for the ventilation fans has reduced mine power costs. The milling of the simple coarse-grained ore in an arctic environment requires special techniques in the design and operation of the plant for materials handling, utilisation of waste heat, reagent selection and tailings disposal. Regulated heavy metal contents in effluents discharged to the sensitive environment are achieved by natural processes. A recent change from sub-aqueous disposal of tailings to beach type deposition within a cell in the tailings area is reviewed. Planning closure of the property presents special problems and an opportunity for innovative techniques. Approximately 25 per cent of the employees at Nanisivik are drawn from the Inuit population of the Canadian Arctic. As the first permanent industrial activity in the High Arctic some innovative approaches to employee relations were required which have resulted in a very stable, culturally mixed community in a remote location.

Nano-particulate systems have attracted much attention recently in pharmaceutical field as drug carriers and functional components of pharmaceutical dosage forms. This paper describes our approaches in design and preparation of nano-particulate systems, including lipid nano-emulsions, chitosan nanoparticles and thermosensitive acrylic nanoparticles, for certain pharmaceutical applications mentioned below. The lipid nano-emulsions with their particle size smaller than 100 nm were prepared for gadolinium neutron-capture therapy (Gd-NCT) of cancer by a thin-film hydration method with sonication, and intraperitoneally injected into Greene's melanoma (melanotic No. 179)-bearing Syrian hamsters. This provided such a high gadolinium concentraton in tumor as 107 µg/g tumor (wet basis) at 48 h after administration. As an alternative gadolinium nano-carrier for Gd-NCT, biodegradable and highly gadopentetate-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (Gd-nanoCPs, 426 mTI in particle diameter and 9.3% in Gd content) were prepared by a novel emulsion-droplet coalescence technique. A significant tumor-killing effect could be obtained when Gd-nanoCP suspension was injected intratumorally twice 24 and 8 hours before neutron irradiation into B 16Fl O melanoma-bearing mice and subsequently thermalneutron was irradiated toward tumor site with a flux of 2 x 109 n/cm2/sec for 60 min. As one another application of nanoparticles, a novel acrylic composite latex with a hydrophobic core and a thermosenstively swellable shell was designed for fabricating microcapsules showing thermosensitive mode of drug release. The microcapsules with the composite latex-dispersing membranes exhibited an exceptionally rapid on-off response of drug-release in a thermosensitive manner.

The present study focuses in the simulation of pattern formation by ion beam sputtering on a material surface. This process is responsible for the appearance of unexpectedly organized patterns, such as ripples, nanodots and hexagonal arrays of nanoholes. A numerical analysis of preexisting patterns is proposed to investigate surface dynamics, based on a model derived from a Kuramoto-Sivashinsky anisotropic equation, in a two dimensional surface with periodic boundary conditions. While deterministic, its highly nonlinear character gives a rich range of results, making it possible to describe accurately different patterns. A finite-difference semi-implicit splitting scheme is employed on the discretization of the governing equation. Simulations were conducted with realistic coefficients related to physical parameters (anisotropies, beam orientation, diffusion). The study dealt with a random and a monomode 1D structure initial condition in order to understand how the shape and wavelength of the initial pattern evolve with time. Ripples and hexagonal patterns were observed in the results, being physically consistent with the phenomenon. Moreover, the Method of Manufactured Solution has been used as verification of the developed numerical scheme.

"During the last decades the refractory life time of the different aggregates of the secondary aluminium production was improved significantly. However, each repair and installation of refractory material affects the operating schedule and can cause costs in the million range. The downtime of just one melting furnace generate costs of 100.000 to 400.000 $ per day. Besides cooling down of the furnace and its repair, the heating-up procedure accounts for the longest time of the shutdown. Usually, heating-up of low cement or ultra low cement castables takes 120 to 150 hours. In order to reduce such expensive downtimes Refratechnik developed a unique and novel product series: Nanobond. These materials can be heated-up in only a third of the usual time. This paper talks about the theoretical aspects, as well as the mechanical and physical properties and especially practical experience of using Nanobond.Theoretical Aspects and Laboratory ResultsCement containing castables such as RCC, MCC, LCC or ULCC are considered standard in many refractory applications. Over the years a wide range of possible raw materials and practical installation methods were developed. However, all of these cement bonded refractory mixes possess one main important drawback. Such materials are characterized by the hydration of the cement bonding. As a result the physical bonded and the hydraulic water has to be removed in a relatively complicated drying procedure. The hydraulic water specifically demands a very careful and cautious heating up procedure. Most of the dreaded steam explosions can occur at a furnace temperature of approx. 250 oC. [1] To avoid such destructions, the heating-up of a new lined or repaired furnace can be very complex and slow. Depending on the furnace or the casted part a drying time of several days with long curing times are common."

Froth flotation is a widely used, cost effective coal cleaning process. However, its high process efficiency is limited to a narrow particle size range between approximately 50 to 600 µm for coal and 10 to 100 µm for minerals. Beyond this range, the efficiency of froth flotation decreases sharply, especially for difficult-to-float coal fines of weak hydrophobicity (e.g., oxidized coal). This study was aimed at enhancing recovery of an Illinois fine coal sample using a flotation column featuring a hydrodynamic cavitation nanobubble generator. Nanobubbles that are mostly smaller than 1 µm can be formed selectively on hydrophobic coal particles from dissolved air in fine coal slurry. Results indicate that combustible recovery of a -150 µm coal was increased by 5-50% for different size fractions in presence of nanobubbles, depending on process operating conditions. Other major advantages of the nanobubble flotation process include lower collector dosage and air consumption since nanobubbles are produced from air naturally dissolved in water and they act as a secondary collector on particle surfaces, thereby resulting in considerably lower operating costs. "Recent DOE workshops highlight the need for advanced soft magnetic materials leveraged in novel designs of power electronic components and systems for power conditioning and grid integration. Dramatic weight and size reductions are possible in these applications through operating at increased frequencies. This manuscript discusses processing and composition design approaches for optimizing FeCo-based nanocomposites for higher frequency operation at 100 kHz and above. The proposed strategy involves starting with prior compositions known to exhibit high inductions, optimal field crystallization induced anisotropy, and excellent mechanical and high temperature magnetic properties. Proposed alloy modifications for the applications of interest would include increased amorphous phase resistance, optimum induced anisotropy, and minimized or carefully engineered magnetostriction. Relevant process developments would target reduction of ribbon thickness by optimizing the casting process or post-processing treatments such as chemical thinning or rolling. Three archetypes FeCo-based nanocomposites are described including near equiatomic FeCo-based, Fe-rich and Co-rich alloys.MotivationSilicon steels are widely applied for 60Hz utility-scale transformers [1]. For applications at high frequencies, however, Si-steels exhibit unacceptable losses and ferrites are typically used due to their high electrical resistivity and good soft magnetic properties [2]. However, the low inductions offerrites have limited their applications in power electronics. Developments in rapid solidification have led to amorphous metal alloys and controlled nanocrystallization processing has resulted in state-of-the-art amorphous/nanocrystalline nanocomposite soft magnets [3-5]. Commercial utility-scale transformers made with Fe-based amorphous materials have been demonstrated to result in significant energy savings with an associated reduction in greenhouse gas emissions [6]. DOE workshops held in 2010 emphasized a need for advanced soft magnetic materials for the next generation of power electronics. For advanced power conditioning and grid integration applications, frequencies of 20 kHz up to -1 MHz are of interest depending on the power level [7]. Here, we review previous work and discuss the approaches to optimize FeCo-based nanocomposite materials for high frequency applications."

Este trabalho trata da deposição de um nanofilme de sílica através do processo sol-gel na superfície de um substrato vítreo para sua aplicação em usinas térmicas de energia solar. Os filmes foram confeccionados pelo processo de revestimento por imersão utilizando-se um equipamento dip-coating e passaram por um tratamento térmico à 425°C durante 30 minutos. Na etapa de caracterização foram feitos ensaios de espectroscopia de fluorescência de raios-X, refletância difusa no UV-Vis, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e medidas de molhabilidade. As propriedades mecânicas foram avaliadas por teste de adesão da fita e dureza a lápis. Resultados dos ensaios de espectroscopia de fluorescência de raios-X confirmaram haver a deposição de sílica sobre o substrato. Foi obtida uma refletância difusa de 2,72% para o filme antirreflexivo. Imagens no MEV revelaram uma superfície lisa, uniforme e isenta de trincas. Medidas de molhabilidade mostraram que houve o molhamento dos filmes pela água, caracterizando-os como hidrofílicos. Os filmes apresentaram uma adesão de 4B e dureza de 3H. Os nanofilmes de sílica confeccionados apresentaram propriedades ópticas e mecânicas satisfatórias para a aplicação solar.

"Understanding the effects of extensive radiation damage in structural metals provides necessary insight for predicting the performance of those metals considered for application in the extreme radiation environment. Predicting mechanical performance after long term radiation exposure is of great importance to extending the life of current nuclear reactors and for developing future materials for the next generation of reactors. A combination of finite element modeling, nanoindentation, and TEM characterization were used to rapidly determine the microstructure and mechanical properties influences of ion irradiation on a standard 3 l 6L stainless steel sample. The results of this study found that ion irradiation and small scale mechanical property testing can be used to characterize extensive levels of radiation damage structure, only when significant consideration is given to ion irradiation depth, surface roughness and polishing condition, the irradiation temperature, and many other experimental parameters.IntroductionFor either the success of next generation nuclear reactors or the extension of current nuclear reactors significantly beyond their designed lifetimes, research is needed into the degradation of the microstructure and mechanical properties governing the performance of the reactor alloys exposed to extreme environments. Although the exact dose and temperature of these nuclear reactor plans may vary, the cladding and other structural components will be exposed to greater dose and at elevated temperatures. To acco=odate these severe exposures, established cladding materials are being testing to longer exposure and new alloy compositions are being considered. [1-3] For neutron test facilities to reach 100 dpa level, exposure times often span several years, significantly limiting the down-select process of potential new materials for extreme radiation environments. Ion irradiation has been used as a technique to provide a look at the effect of irradiation damage on materials in a significantly shorter time frame. Previous work using proton irradiation provides a deep, broad, and relatively uniform defect profile compared to heavy ion irradiation; however, using this type of radiation still requires weeks to months to reach the 100 dpa level. [4] In this research, we investigated the feasibility of using heavy ion (nickel) irradiation and small scale mechanical testing to provide in a few days a first order screening technique for potential alloys that are being considered for advanced testing."

Com o objetivo de avaliar as condições estruturais via comportamento mecânico associada ao efeito TRIP realizou-se estudo comparativo das propriedades mecânicas de dois aços inoxidáveis austeníticos comerciais de graus 304L e 201LN. A martensita induzida por deformação foi formada durante a laminação a frio a temperatura ambiente até percentual de redução de espessura de 80% e avaliada via nanoindentação com cargas máximas de ensaio de 1, 20, 50 e 100 gf. Observou-se que as propriedades decresceram com o aumento das cargas utilizadas e apresentaram tendência de estabilização com as maiores cargas.
