"Peñasquito is a complex polymetallic deposit containing gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper and is one of the largest producers of gold in Mexico. Mining activity is currently transitioning to a second open pit, Chile Colorado, which will be mined concurrently with the existing open pit, Peñasco. The ore bodies are located within diatreme pipes and into the surrounding sediment formation. In the coming years, mining will be carried out in more sedimentary zones, which are significantly higher in organic carbon content. Organic carbon in the feed influences both flotation and leaching operations. Several changes are being implemented to the Peñasquito flowsheet to mitigate the effects of increased organic carbon in the plant feed. These include the use of alternate reagent schemes, construction of a carbon pre-flotation circuit, implementation of a pre-leach flotation circuit ahead of pyrite leach, and evaluation of a tertiary process for separation of carbon and precious metal minerals.INTRODUCTION Goldcorp’s Peñasquito operation is located in the Mexican state of Zacatecas, approximately 200 km from the city of Zacatecas in the Mazapil municipality (Figure 1). Peñasquito has been in operation since 2009, with mining carried out by open-pit methods. Oxide ore has been processed in a heap leach facility and sulfide ore is treated in the sulfide processing plant. The processing capacity of the sulfide plant is 130,000 tonnes of ore per day and in 2016 production amounted to 465,000 ounces of gold, 17.6 million ounces of silver, 109 million lb of contained lead in lead concentrate, and 263 million lb of contained zinc in zinc concentrate (Goldcorp Inc., 2017). To recover more of the contained gold and silver and to mitigate the impact of increasing organic carbon content in the ore, a number of significant changes are being made to the operation."

"Based on the experiments, a possibility of successful processing of double-refractory gold sulphide concentrates with a high content of natural organic carbon, which has a high sorption capacity toward gold chloride complexes, has been demonstrated. The proposed approach involves deep burnout of sorption-active organic carbon in an autoclave at a higher temperature and a longer retention time. INTRODUCTION It is known that one of the reasons why gold-bearing ores and concentrates are refractory is the occurrence of fine gold in sulphides (usually in pyrite and arsenopyrite) in ores and concentrates. In addition, refractory gold-bearing ores and concentrates also contain an organic carbonaceous material, which has a sorption capacity towards gold chloride complex, making the ore or concentrate even more refractory. In pressure oxidation, metallic gold is oxidized by Fe (III) aqua-ions and complex Au(Cl)4- ions are formed at temperatures over 180°C, in the presence of chlorides contained in ores. Complex gold anion is adsorbed on the organic carbon surface and then reduced to Au0; the chloride ion is regenerated and gold, adsorbed on organic carbon microparticles, is ultimately transferred to tailings (preg-robbing). Currently, there are several suggestions how to suppress preg-robbing (Simmons, 1998, Pyke, 1999, Rees, van Deventer, 2000, Zhao Jun-wei, 2008). It can be done by reducing the organic carbon content by processing (flotation, etc.),reducing chloride ion concentration by preliminary washing of concentrates in thickeners, reducing the adsorption capacity of organic carbonaceous material by introducing some organic substances that are strongly adsorbed on its surface (blanking agents), and reducing the redox potential of the slurry liquids by introducing neutralizing agents (limestone)."

"Preliminary investigations indicate that organic lake sediments offer some potential for gold exploration within the Canadian Shield of northwestern Saskatchewan. It is also apparent that certain precautions must be taken.Gold is primarily related to the organic fraction of the lake sediments, which, although giving consistant Au contents to those sediments, may restrict the dispersion of Au within the lake itself. It may be necessary to carry out selective extractions on the lake sediments to differentiate between Au related to organic sequestration, indicative of hydromorphic and/ or chemical dispersion, and Au related to inorganics, indicative of mechanical dispersion.Lake sediments are probably only of use for very detailed exploration (i.e. every lake). One to three samples per lake should be appropriate, although a single centre-lake organic-rich sediment sample may be adequate in very small lakes. Each lake sediment sample should be analyzed at least twice and the analytical data carefully monitored and evaluated.The use of As in lake sediments as a pathfinder element for gold is applicable in the search for certain types of gold occurrences.Following detailed lake sediment sampling, basal till sampling can possibly be used to localize areas of potential gold with or without base metal mineralization."

Previous studies of the Thompson and Temperly ore bodies show alteration aureoles in the Middle Ordovician host-rock limestones, dolomites and shales extending laterally as much as 60m from the ore. Thickness, texture, carbonate and clay mineralogy, major-, minor-, and trace-element contents; and carbonate carbon and carbonate oxygen Isotope compositions of the host rocks all have been significantly altered by hydrothermal processes. Organic geochemical analyses of samples from the basal 8-cm-thick carbonaceous shale bed and immediately overlying limestone bed of the Quimbys Mill Member of the Platteville Formation, collected from within the ore, the alteration aureole, and the unaltered country rock show: 1) solution of carbonates and residual concentration of organic matter, 2) decreases in the volatile (Si) and pyrolytic (S2) hydrocarbon yields In samples of the basal shale from within the ore, 3) decreases in the relative amounts of the lower molecular weight (<nC25) saturated hydrocarbons in samples from the ore, and 4) no changes in either the organic carbon isotope composition or the Rock-Eval or biomarker thermal maturation Indicators. In light of the 125-170°C depositional temperatures documented for the early marmatitic sphalerltes in these deposits by fluid Inclusion studies, the lack of thermal alteration of the organic matter suggests a relatively short mineralization episode, a conclusion supported by the relatively simple sphalerite band stratigraphy. The decreases in the volatile and pyrolytic hydrocarbon yields for shale samples from the ore supports a model for mineral deposition which obtains sulfide through reaction of brine sulfate and indigenous organic matter.

The primary and secondary organic matter in sedimentary rocks changes markedly when it becomes heated as a consequence of thick sediment accumulation and normal geothermal gradients, high geothermal gradients, hydrothermal fluids, or igneous events. Contact zones adjacent to small igneous dikes allow sampling of a single sedimentary bed that has been exposed to temperatures in a range as great as 30-500°C. Dike-heated rocks are, therefore, good sites for research on thermal effects because variation of the original organic matter is minimal, the range of heating is great, and the history of rock heating in a dike zone is relatively well established. In rare cases, such as at the dike near Wolcott, Colorado, described in this paper, the rock samples are sufficiently unweathered to allow analysis of secondary bitumens generated by the heating. We show by optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and geochemistry the kinds of solid organic constituents in sedimen¬tary rocks and in ore deposits and the effects of heating. The primary phytoclasts that make up kerogen In sedimentary rock and in some ore deposits (pollen, resin, charcoal, humified woody remains, etc.) change in ways that are familiar to coal specialists. Progressive loss of moisture and other volatile matter yields residual kerogen that Is relatively higher in carbon and lower In oxygen and hydrogen, and has greater molecular or polymer ordering. In our contact zone examples, atomic H/C ratios of kerogen decrease from 0.8 (one case from 1.4) to 0.4, the hydrogen index from Rock-Eval pyrolysis decreases from 70 to 5, and the transformation ratio from Rock-Eval pyrolysis increases from 0.06 to 0.5 with increased heating. The visible effects of heating seen by scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy include formation of vesicles and flow structure, the development of optical anisotropy and mesophase, change of color, and increase in the refractive index, absorption, and reflectance. Some of these changes In primary organic matter are observed also in secondary organic matter, for example, in solid bitumens in sedimentary gold ores or In lead-zinc deposits. Quantification of color or absorption changes is difficult because it Is hard to make thin sections of organic matter with uniform thickness. However, natural objects with uniform thickness can be used. We show the colors of pollen In rocks from the Salton geothermal field at temperatures ranging from 100 to 300°C, and of pollen heated in laboratory bombs from 150 to 400°C. Measurement of vitrinite reflectance is a practical way to quantify thermal changes of kerogen and minerals of most sedimentary rocks because vitrinite is fairly widespread In sedimentary rocks of Devonian age and younger. For example, the reflectance of vitrinite rises from the regional level, as low as 0.4 % Ro, to more than 5% Ro adjacent to dikes that cut sedimentary rock. This is equivalent to the rank change from subbituminous coal to extreme meta-anthracite. The rise is most abrupt near thin dikes, but when the distance from the igneous contact is expressed as a ratio of dike thickness the reflectance rise is similar for all dikes. Controlled heating of vitrinite-bearing rocks In the laboratory provides a means to assign known temperatures to vitrinite-reflectance values. The derived plots of temperature In dike contact zones have the same shape and level as those predicted by heat theory, and the temperature lines extend toward dike contact temperatures that are about half those of most magmas, as expected if the intrusions did not flow past the sedimentary rock for a long time. The globular submicroscopic structure of vitrinite and Its heterogeneity, which we show by means of transmission electron microscopy, pose some problems In selecting a uniform type of vitrinite for measurement of thermal changes. At present, routine reflectance values of vitrinite dispersed in rocks have a relative uncertainty as great as 10%. Thermally caused chemical changes in the primary kerogen, especially decrease in the oxygen and hydrogen contents, lead to formation of secondary products in the contact zone. The measured changes of secondary organic products in these rocks include formation of peaks In concentration of total extractable organic matter and in hydrocarbons, and in the saturated/aromatic hydrocarbon ratio over the interval where primary organic hydrogen decreases most rapidly--then destruction or expulsion of these products at high temperatures. The odd carbon-number predominance of the C25-C31 n-alkanes In samples far from the dike disappears by about 1.3% Ro whereas the 13C: 12C ratios of the saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons increase over most of the thermal range. The saturated aromatic hydrocarbon ratio at first increases, corresponding to thermal generation of saturated hydrocarbons, then decreases in the most altered samples. One use of organic petrography, in addition to identifying organic fades or thermal alteration, is recognition of sample contamination such as the solid organic additives used in some drilling muds which may contaminate geochemical samples.

Stable Nitroxyl polymers, such as poly (2,2,6,6-tetramenthyl-1-piperidinyloxy-4-yl methacrylate) (PTMA), are known to be effective as cathode active materials for lithium rechargeable betteries.The nitroxide radicals displayed a reversible and very rapid redox performances.We present a new synthesized method to get PTMA powder, then a doctor-blading method was used to prepare the PTMA composite electrodes, enabling successful production of homogeneous electrodes. It was characterized through FT-IR and SEM methods.The organic radical battery consists of lithium metal anode and PTMA cathode with an active material content of 65wt%.The best performance is achieved with a thin cathode that shows nearly 100% utilization of the active material (111mAh/g) at 0.1C.Through the electrochemical tests, it was found that there was a stable plateau at 3.5V while discharging. Besides, the cycling stability and rate capability were measured in detail. Although they showed a certain quantity of irreversible capacity on the first cycle, the capacity stabilized after the second cycle.

Biological treatment of metals-impacted water using sulfate reduction is a viable means of treatment that has been applied in pilot and full scale at numerous projects. One of the fundamental challenges with this type of treatment is the selection of an appropriate substrate to support the sulfate reduction process long-term. The substrate degradation products provide a carbon source and an electron donor for metabolism by sulfate-reducing bacteria and consequently organic characteristics are critical; however, the physical attributes of the substrate are equally critical to an efficient and optimized substrate mix. This paper explores the affect of particle size (a.k.a. grain size) of several substrate mixes on the treatment efficiency of sulfate reducing treatment systems. Substrate selection can be separated into two phases of evaluation, the primary selection phase and the secondary optimization phase. The primary selection phase considers such fundamental attributes as source availability, economics, bioavailability and longevity. These fundamental activities are conducted in order to identify potential candidate ingredients of the substrate mix which are regionally available, economically viable and consistent with the biogeochemical aspects of the project. Recent work has been conducted in the development of testing protocol for organic substrates to quantify bioavailability (Martinez Hernandez et al. 2010, Place et al. 2006) as part of the primary selection phase. Once the substrate ingredients have been selected based on the primary criteria, the mixture of these ingredients is then developed based on an optimization process, including consideration of the substrate ingredient?s particle size distribution.

THIS short note on the probable character of the organic sulfur compounds in coal can do no more than indicate lines of research. We have no new experimental work to describe, nothing comparable in value with the careful studies of American coals by Powell and Parr1 and Yancey and Frazer.2 A study of the manner in which sulfur compounds exist in British coals (and their behavior on heat treatment) is rendered increasingly necessary by the fact that the British reserves of good coking coals of reasonably low sulfur content are fast being depleted. We believe that it is essentially by a study of the modes of formation, occurrence, and decomposition of the various types of inorganic and organic sulfur compounds in coal that it will be possible, with hope of success, to attack the problem of purifying coals, otherwise eminently suitable for coking, from these objectionable ingredients. Sulfur, so far as is at present known, does not normally occur in the free state in the coal conglomerate, but is chiefly distributed, irregularly, in three forms: 1. As primary constituents of the coal conglomerate, organic in nature and probably associated with those molecular complexes that have resulted from the degradation of the proteins of the plant tissues responsible for the formation of the coal mass. These constituents can be classed as "organic sulfur." 2. As metallic sulfides, e.g., iron pyrites. 3. As metallic sulfates, e.g., calcium sulfate and ferrous sulfate. (The occurrence of these compounds varies with the occurrence and degree of degradation of class 2.)

THE claim is made in a number of patents1,2,3,4 that some compounds of the class known as aryl sulphides have collector properties. One of these patents generalizes the claim to include all aryl sulphides, whose generic formula is R-S¬R[=]-R’ (where x = r,2, . . . ), with the restriction that if the aromatic radicals R, R&apos; contain substituent groups these groups may not contain nitrogen or oxygen. Moses, Hess, and Perkins cite as evidence for their claims the results of flotation tests on Anaconda and Miami copper ores using Biphenyl sulphide, ditolyl disulphide and dinapthyl disulphide as collectors. The use of alkyl sulphides as collectors has also been reported5 with the conclusion that the alkyl sulphides are better collectors than the corresponding aryl sulphides. The experimental work cited appears to confirm this contention. In order to test these claims with respect to diphenyl sulphide, a sample, purchased from the Eastman Kodak Co., was tested against Anaconda ore. The procedure followed was that of Moses, Hess, and Perkins. A sample of ore weighing 500 grams was placed in a laboratory ball mill. To this was added 220 grams of water, 0.06 grams of commercial diphenyl sulphide (1/4 lb. per ton of ore), and 0.8 grams of lime (3 lb. per ton of ore). The material was ground until 93 per cent passed a 65mesh screen. This pulp was diluted to 16 per cent solids. A sample of the diluted pulp was placed in a Minerals Separation type of laboratory flotation cell. After a 2-min. agitation period, pine oil was added and the froth collected for a period of 15 min. This test recovered 68 per cent of the copper, with a ratio of concentration of 6.8: 1. The tailing assay was 0.3 per cent Cu. Moses, Hess and Perkins attained a recovery of 75 per cent, with a ratio concentration of 12: 1. Although these results do not compare too well with those of Moses, Hess and Perkins, subsequent tests showed an improvement, as judged by vanning of the tails. It is concluded, therefore, that the patent results are confirmed. CONTACT-ANGLE TESTS In order to study the response of the various minerals, found in Anaconda ore, to commercial diphenyl sulphide, some contact-angle tests were made. Polished particles of bornite, chalcocite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and quartz were conditioned for 15 min. in a suspension of diphenyl sulphide in water. The concentration of this suspension was 0.284 grams per liter, this being the concentration of this reagent in the ball mill. The conditioned particles were rinsed with water (not rubbed with filter paper or boiled linen) and then tested against an air bubble in the bubble machine, with the following results: born-

The Grants uranium region of northwest New Mexico is the largest uranium district in the United States (approximately 50% of U.S. production plus reserves) and one of the largest In the world, with approximately 900 million pounds U308 production plus reserves. Deposits of the region are unusual among sandstone deposits for their high content of epigenetic carbonaceous material, generally interpreted but not proved to be of humic origin--that is, co-extensive with uranium in the primary deposits. Virtually all production in the region has been from the Jackpile Sandstone and Westwater Canyon Member of the Jurassic Morrison Formation. The tabular uranium deposits contain, in addition to humate and uranium, significant authigenic phyllosilicates, quartz overgrowths, humate-replaced detrital silicates, and a trace-metal assemblage typical of other sandstone uranium deposit types. Surrounding the deposits in the two sandstone units of the Morrison Formation is an alteration zone within which iron leaching has altered detrital ilmenite-magnetite to residual masses of titanium oxides. Feldspar alteration is locally present within this zone, below deposits in the Jackpile Sandstone, and above those in the Westwater Canyon Member. The feldspar alteration increases in inten¬sity toward the Brushy Basin Member which separates the two sandstone units, ranging from partial replacement to replacement and dissolution of plagioclase and sanidine. Spatial relations among the epigenetic humate, authigenic silicates, and the broad alteration zones that extend from the Brushy Basin Member to and including the uranium deposits suggest that (a) the organic material was involved in the unusual silicate alteration, transport, and authigenesis, and (b) that the humates originated in shales of the Brushy Basin Member. Stratigraphic relations among the Brushy Basin Member and the overlying Jackpile Sandstone and underlying Westwater Canyon Member suggest [in turn] that there was continuous, interfingering deposition controlled in part by contemporaneous basement subsidence along northwest- and northeast-trending zones. Following minor erosion of upper Jackpile Sandstone and deposition of basal organic-rich Cretaceous sediments, the silicates of the Jackpile Sandstone were once again altered by organic-bearing fluids, this time permeating down from Cretaceous sediments and partly obliterated ore-stage alteration.

All pigments and extenders or fillers whether organic or inorganic fall into the following broad general classes: I. Colored II.-White III. Black IV. Metallic A pigment- is any particulate matter that is essentially insoluble and chemically unaffected by the media into which it is dispersed. According to this very broad definition, colored pigments, white pigments, fillers, extenders, and functional pigments would all be included. The particulate size range would also be quite broad ranging from very fine colloidal particles (~0.01µ) to relatively coarse particles (~100.0µ). This broad definition is usually subdivided into more practical divisions which tend to relate the classification of the pigment to its primary function in the system in which it is used. Hence, the word extender implies that its major purpose may be to extend the system.

Placer Domes? Campbell Mine, situated in northwestern Ontario, is undergoing an assessment of the efficiency of the operation which is necessitated by the low gold price and a reducing ore reserve grade. A decision has recently been taken to move away from a functional based departmental structure (underground, engineering, geology, etc.) towards a team-based system where crews, engineers, geologists and supervisors are responsible for the planning and operation of a particular area of the mine. The objective is to improve communication and understanding of the goals and achievements and to ensure a forum is available for the generation of ideas. It is intended to increase the accountability and decision-making ability of the teams in an effort to achieve the mines? safety and production targets. This paper presents a critical review of the progress of this organisational change process and its successes and failures at the time of writing.

There has been a reduction in overall workforce in the mining industry during the current downturn; a corresponding reduction in fatalities and high potential incidents (HPIs) has not been observed. The same contributing factors can be seen in the vast majority of these incidents. These include inadequate supervision and lack of adequate risk assessment. How management structures, trains and leads an operation can have a great impact on eliminating these factors and reducing the risk of fatalities and HPIs.Contractors now account for 41 per cent of full-time equivalent employees in the Queensland mining workforce, and are disproportionately represented in the majority of fatalities and HPIs. Having a clear strategy for how contractors are integrated into the workforce is crucial. This talk will include a discussion of the data as collected in the Department of Mines and Natural Resources department database, and offer solutions based on this data.CITATION:LaBranche, N and Callinan, G, 2016. Attraction, recruitment and retention of quality mining engineers is becoming increasingly difficult for many mining companies. Part of the problem is attracting young professionals, especially given the decline in graduating engineer numbers, and the other is balancing the new engineerÆs development with business needs. The evolution of the graduate program at Olympic Dam over the last five years has resulted in substantial benefits for both the engineer and the company. The program has developed to provide structured exposure to key areas of the mine enabling new engineers to step into vacated roles as the need arises. The pool of quality engineers generated by the graduate program is a buffer against high industry turnover and helps reduce future recruitment expenditure. Olympic DamÆs program goes beyond conventional recruitment of graduate engineers. Innovations designed to improve intake include the employment of graduate engineers as well as final year students, retraining of existing personnel from other backgrounds and fast track recruitment for previous vacation students. By employing a cross-section of professionals to complement the generic university graduate, the company takes full advantage of the relevant lifestyle experience belonging to the individual, which is a substantial factor in turnover. Study assistance and a salary paid for final year students and mature age students often creates a loyalty that lasts beyond graduation. Careful selection of vacation students increases the ease of recruitment at a later stage and ensures that full advantage is taken of the relationship developed previously between the company and young professional. The evolution of recruitment at Olympic Dam has seen a decline in the turnover statistics of young mining professionals.

The world&apos;s biomass with its species-specific ability to concentrate metallic elements must provide one of the dominant concentration and transport systems for such elements. Given that about thirty elements are now considered bio-essential, for all these biomass may control their environmental behavior. Life appears to be present in almost all places where liquid water is present at temperatures near 100°C or below. In the surface environment a very large array of simple minerals are produced in living cells and such processes can lead to economic concentrations. Because of the specific nature of bioconcentration of elements, in all environments where biomaterials accumulate, interesting metal concentrations may occur or the molecular fragments from bio-degradation may allow specific metal transport and concentration. The scale of biological-inorganic interactions on our planetary surface is still inadequately appreciated.

MINING, in contrast to manufacturing, deals with a wasting asset. That which is taken out of the ground is gone, the property is depleted to that extent, and will eventually become exhausted of profitable ore. So the life of a mining company is dependent upon the ability of its management to develop improved methods to permit extraction at a profit of the lower-grade ores which remain, to extend by intelligent exploration the limits of its known ore bodies, and to find and acquire new properties to take the place of those that, for one reason or another, are no longer operated. Its history is a story of constant change, of the working out of properties here and the acquisition and development of properties there, to maintain the vitality of the whole. Instrumentation is not a stranger to the minerals processing industry. In fact, very few plants now exist that haven&apos;t to one extent or another adapted operations to instrumentation. But with the rapid growth of such controls has come the need for effective departments composed of men trained to maintain and repair the instruments; here is where many firms fall short. The importance of the role an instrument department should play is underscored by the omnipotent effects which instruments often exert over an operation. Reserve Mining Co. is an example: while instrumentation at this taconite plant represents approximately 2% of the process equipment cost, a breakdown of instruments may result in the ineffective use (or complete shut-down) of the other 98% of plant investment.

THERE once was a little kid, whose lot was a very tough one until he grew up. His parents did not have much in common; from all indica-tions, it is probable that the child was not wanted. His father Geology and his mother Physics separated shortly after his birth, which occurred during the World War amid a smoke screen of mathematics. He was kicked around a great deal. His parents could not agree on a name, and they finally christened him "Geophysics," for short. His relatives insisted that the name should be "Geophysical Prospecting," "Geophys-ical Exploration" or "Exploratory Geophysics"; though the youngster has grown up by now, this battle is still going on. His father did not think the child would amount to much until he began to show some unexpected talents, which were acquired, no doubt, from his mother Physics. His progress caused his father no little worry, and he began to wonder whether his offspring would help him in his business when he grew up or would set up shop in competition with the old man. His aunt Petroleum watched his growth with benevolent interest; his uncle Mining remained rather skeptical and cousin Civil Engineering not only assumed the attitude of the man from Missouri but was not much con-vinced even after he had been shown. Making a long story short, the kid decided that he had to stand on his own feet and get along as best he could. Having come from a good family . he possessed some outstanding characteristics such as resourcefulness and a reasonable amount of business ability. He therefore decided that it would be to his advantage to follow in his father&apos;s and mother&apos;s foot-steps as much as possible, and develop the good qualities of both. As a result, the youngster did fairly well for himself, and his relatives decided that it might be to their advantage to be on better terms with him. Father Geology had come to the conclusion that the boy could be very helpful to him and now wanted him to live in his house. His mother, who had brought him through the teething and measles stages, felt quite capable of bringing up the boy without the help of his father; and, as the fairer sex will do, would confide to a neighbor every now and then that his
