"In order to intensify benefication processes (flotation and magnetic separation) for rebellious tantalitecolumbite ores electrochemical machining of pulp (ECM) is suggested instead of costly mechanic-chemical activation and magnetizing roasting. Any change in the surface mineral-semiconductor potential under the action of electrochemical treatment results in the change in the isoelectrical state of the surface and the adsorption property of the mineral with respect to ionogenic reagents-collectors. In this case conditions are created for regulating the ion composition, reduction-oxidation potential and pH of the liquid phase of the pulp without any extra introduction of expensive and often ecologically harmful chemical substances.Ores containing tantalum and niobium are characterized by complex chemical composition, determining their physical properties (conductivity, dielectric penetration, magnetization value, etc.) and their electric susceptibility.The authors investigations show that the pulp electrochemical treatment leads to the increasing magnetic susceptibility of the paramagnetic minerals. The main chemical elements forming the columbite-tantalite minerals except tantalum and niobium are iron and manganese. They determine the rare-metal minerals paramagnets properties. The electrochemical treatment changes the relation of the oxidized and reduced forms of these elements having. The method of cathode pulp treatment before flotation is successfully tested industrially.In the field of noble metals metallurgy new technological proposals are reduced to the following. As is know, the production of noble metals from unusual raw materials demands the elaboration of principally new technologies new technologies in so far as the methods for gold and silver extraction from ores are as a rule low elective and at the existing level of engineering are economically not expedient.The analysis of the main trends in the field of non-standard raw material treatment shows that the perspective ones are the geo- and biotechnological processes (underground leaching and leaching in heaps - UL and HL and microbiological methods of metal extraction)."

INTRODUCTION Man is exposed to many agents which induce mutations in germ cells and/or cancer at work, at play, and at home. In this total mix of mutagenic and carcinogenic agents, how important are radon and its daughters? Before man moved into caves and other permanent dwellings, the principal mutagenic and carcinogenic agent to which he was exposed was natural background radiation--cosmic rays, radium and potassium-40 in his food, plus gamma rays and radon from the soil and rocks. When man moved into caves, captured fire, and began to preserve and store foods, his exposure to carcinogens and mutagens took a quantum leap. Carcinogens and mutagens appear to act in the same way, that is, by altering the DNA or nuclear proteins of cells. Most mutagens are carcinogens, and vice versa, so when I say mutagens from here on, I will be referring to both. The relationship of the two is emphasized by the fact that administration of a carcinogen to a group of animals not only increases cancer rates among the exposed animals, but also among their progeny (Tomatis 1979). Environmental Mutagens Smoke from man's fires, overheated foods, and foods preserved by smoking, resulted in ingestion and inhalation of many polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons--many of which are mutagens. Caves and houses with tight windows and doors tend to collect the radon which is constantly emanating out of soil, rocks and concrete, so man's exposure to the radon daughter component of background radiation increased several fold. Preserving food by salting or pickling with material that contained nitrites and nitrates led to increased ingestion of nitrosamines, which are potent mutagens. When his grains and other foods were stored in slightly damp rooms, fungi or mold would grow on them. Several of these fungi are now known to produce very potent mutagens. The best known of these is aflatoxin B (Ramachandra 1979). It may seem strange that a living organism would produce a mutagen. One might think that it would scramble its own genetic heritage. The reason it does not is that it produces the mutagen in an inactive form. It can be activated only by an animal's enzyme systems after being eaten. When man moved into cities, the collective smoke from wood and coal fires further increased his exposure. That particular smoke has now mostly disappeared, but has been replaced by smoke from automobiles and industry. When man moved into the age of technology, his exposure to mutagens again increased dramatically. Many mutagenic chemicals, from benzene and beta naphthylamine to a long array of pesticides and tobacco products have been added to our environment. Excess deaths from cancer are now being observed among chemists in most industrialized nations. Mutagens are even found in much of our wine, beer, and whiskey (Keller 1980). Some of the chemical mutagens were widely used in food or in other commercial products before their potential was discovered. Striking examples of this is the original butter coloring agent and the polychlorinated biphenyls that have been widely used in brake fluids and electrical transformers. Large quantities of them have been discarded or disposed of in a careless manner--in such a way that many of them have contaminated our food, our ground water and air (Landrigan 1981). In this nation, with the help of several recent laws, we were just beginning to get control of the industrial chemical mutagens. With the relaxing of these laws that is currently going on, it appears that it will be many more years before we really bring chemical mutagens under control. Many nations have yet to come to grips with this problem. On top of this massive array of chemical mutagens we have now added radiation from many artificial sources. For most of us this means medical X-ray and fallout from nuclear weapons testing. Ionizing radiation is one of the most potent mutagens, so it has caught the public eye, and its contribution cannot be ignored. Fortunately, by the time we started using radioactive materials in quantity with the Manhattan Project, we had experience with radium and X-ray (some of it bad); we knew enough radiobiology and enough about methods of radiation protection so that most nuclear laboratories have had a phenomenal record of radiation safety. Radiation is one new technology with great potential for harm that has not exhibited that potential except for a few isolated situations like that of radium dial painters, uranium miners and atomic bomb victims. Uranium miners slipped into this list almost by accident. We could have protected our uranium miners just as well as we did the workers in nuclear laboratories; but we failed to do so. Why didn't we? The reason is simple. The Atomic Energy Commission was charged with protecting the health of their workers. They did not wait for a pile of bodies before they introduced controls. Congress appropriated the money, and taxpayers were willing to pay for the protection against radiation. Miners unfortunately did not work for the Atomic Energy Commission. Although mine operators were ignorant about radiation, the key item was that in the 1950s nobody was willing to pay the extra costs of adequate ventilation to control the high levels of radon and radon daughters in uranium mines. As the mining industry faces times of change, new challenges arise to ensure raw material supply for the younger and future generations. Different scenarios are currently shaping the way we mine and teach mining engineering. Led by an increasing demand for raw materials, net zero requirements for improving long-term operation performance, technological advancements such as automation and digitalisation, safety improvements, environmental considerations and a need for social acceptance, mining is pursuing to change and adapt to these requirements at a faster pace. Such changing times raise new concerns, one of the most relevant is the lower number of students interested or enrolling in mining engineering and related fields leaving mining engineering as one of the less preferred career options between the younger generations. Nonetheless, it is essential to continue addressing and supplying the skill sets that is suited to contemporary and future of the mining industry. To this end, globally, academia is currently undergoing several initiatives such as curricula updates and adaptation, up skilling, improving teaching practices and techniques, including e-learning techniques, enhancing industry-academia and inter-university collaboration, and much more

The ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgical industries have been utilising slags, fluxes and mattes for process optimisation and quality improvements at high temperatures. Understanding the fundamentals of the thermodynamics and kinetics of chemical metallurgy regarding slags, fluxes and mattes has been essential to the technological developments of these optimisation and improvements. This work will discuss how these fundamentals have been studied in the reactions involved and implemented in the ferrous industry from primary refining to continuous casting. In particular, the chemical driving forces that allow these reactions to take place and the limitations of the kinetics that require optimisation to enhance the reactions. In addition, the future research direction for slag technology innovation and the role of these fundamentals will also be described.

Mineral commodity prices are subject to volatility over both the short and longer run – driving fluctuating operating margins for mining companies over time. Such market dynamics influence mine operating decisions depending on the interplay of company-specific and mineral market factors. The company factors include corporate financial strength and price-risk management strategy, as well as mining practices and methods at the operation level. The critical mineral market factor is the price of the ex-mine product. This results from underlying microeconomic and macroeconomic root-causes pertaining to mineral supply and demand, in addition to the activities of financial participants within commodity markets.Significant changes in commodity prices of an extended duration, either up or down, remain the principal influence upon mine economics – and therefore on mining practices too. Accurate and precise forecasting of commodity prices (and of relevant exchange rates) continues to prove elusive both to mineral economists and market analysts. Thus, at any given point in time, there are often widely differing price forecasts available for both the relevant commodity and currency. Companies as a result are unclear how to respond in practical operating terms to such price-side uncertainty – other than to manage incremental capital and operating expenditure. Typical company – and industry financier – responses to the difficulty in predicting future mineral commodity prices are to take measures to manage uncertainties in mining project revenues and costs. These operating practices are prudent – yet come at an economic cost: that is, lost revenue and margin opportunity is inevitable in any such system not easily capable of responding to price volatility in the market. The mine of the future will seek to capture this lost economic opportunity. In July 2006, ten Mining Engineering students and Associate Professor David Laurence from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) participated in the universityÆs inaugural overseas mining field trip. The ten-day trip to western Canada involved visits to two mines in British Columbia, the Diavik Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories and the Syncrude oil sands operation in Alberta. Importantly, the groupÆs main objective was to gain a global understanding of todayÆs mining industry by observing the different cultural, legal, social and environmental setting found in Canada. It should be noted that the entire trip was planned, organised and directed by the students and benefited from extensive industry support both in Australia and Canada. This report intends to provide an overview of the field trip and describe to a limited extent the Canadian approach to mining.

The 1987-88 Denver Brown Cloud Study was performed to determine the sources of the particle cloud which forms over Denver each winter. The study was organized under the leadership of Colorado Governor Roy Romer , EPA Region VIII and the Greater Denver Chamber of Commerce. The study was sponsored by over 40 organizations representing governmental agencies, the natural gas industry, the coal industry, utilities, oil companies, railroads, the motor vehicle industry, and other Denver area companies and organizations. The cost of the study was $1.5 million which was raised almost entirely from private sources. The study team was headed by Dr. John Watson of the Desert Research Institute of the University of Nevada. Dr. Watson is a recognized expert in conducting studies of this type.

World demand for iron ore is far from peaking, and the substantial price decline that has captivated commentators since early 2014 is not the result of widespread misreading by producers of the prospects for global market growth. Recent price movements provide little useful insight into the industry’s longer-term fortunes, apart from reminding mining companies that their businesses need to be robust against the volatility and inescapable cyclicality of mineral commodity markets. "Paste backfill as a means of supporting underground mining is gaining popularity. Despite this trend, engineering and design of mine paste backfill systems are still largely based on empirical methods rather than established scientific principles. Because of a lack of sound understanding of mineral paste flow, some degree of trial and error is often involved during commissioning and operating of new paste fill systems. New operations often have to be built with flexibilities and contingencies, escalating the overall project costs.Disciplines that can lend some science to mineral paste flow include slurry transport, fresh concrete rheology, and soil mechanics. This paper reviews the applicability of some scientific and engineering principles found in those related disciplines to mineral paste flows. Examples are given to illustrate important points. The phenomenon of mineral paste flow is examined from new perspectives. Gaps in our understanding of mineral paste rheology are identified and from those some future research directions naturally emerge. Status and problems of the current engineering and design practice are also briefly discussed.INTRODUCTIONPaste backfill as a means of supporting underground mining is gaining popularity. One of the weaknesses of such empirical methods is the lack of scalability and transferability of rheological data from pre-engineering test phases to production phases. It is not uncommon that flow fiction data generated from expensive loop pumping tests turn out to be uncharacteristic of the paste in fullscale production. In such a case the operators have to re-climb the learning curve, sometimes with expensive disruptions to the mining operation."

Abstract Some Canadian geologists believe chat, in the Grenville sub-province of Eastern Canada, there is no granitic intrusion older than the anorthosite. The writers are among those who hold the contrary view. They suggest a new means to distinguish between rocks belonging to intrusions respectively older (Laurentian) or younger (Pine Hill) than the anorthosite. This new method is based on microscopical observations which demonstrate that the Pine Hill intrusives contain a large amount of exsolution perthite, whereas the Laurentian intrusives are completely devoid of exsolution perthite. Where perthite is present in Laurentian rocks, it is the result of lacer hydrothermal replacement. Introduction The present paper is the result of a systematic study of some acidic intrusive rocks in the Grenville sub-province. These rocks underlie large areas of the Canadian shield in the Province of Quebec, mostly along the southern border of the shield.

THE year 1935 is noteworthy for the superior legislative measures passed by several states. Sincere efforts have been made to establish equity between the various producing tracts in oil and gas fields. Outstanding legislative measures include the New Mexico law, known as Senate Bill No. 79, approved on Feb. 23; the Oklahoma law on April 22; the Texas law on April 30; and the Kansas law, which became effective July 1. Primarily designed to prevent waste, but more or less the direct out- growth of the current excess of potential oil and gas production, these statutes fall in the class of "Proration Laws."

The objective of the Canadian International Development Agency program is to facilitate the efforts of the people of developing countries to achieve self-sustainable economic and social development in accordance with their needs and environment. The British Columbia Ministry of Energy and Mines (BCMEM) is the executing agency for the four-year Peru Minerals and Metals Public Sector Assistance Project which began in December 1998. The primary beneficiary is the Ministerio de Energía y Minas del Peru (PMEM). The project is designed to address mine health & safety, environmental management and mineral resource information. Project activities currently underway include joint development of: an inspection system, a mine rescue system, an enhanced and e-Commerce capable mineral information website, environmental guidelines for industry and standardized ministry evaluation criteria for environmental impact assessments and closure plans. In addition, reports on management options for mineral concentrate transportation, storage and handling, and on mine reclamation security policy have been delivered at workshops.

Despite low commodity prices and mining industry cutbacks throughout the world, Peru remains one of the industry’s bright spots. The country’s remarkable economic turnaround during the 1990s remains a model for other developing nations to follow. And the Peruvian government has not forgotten the industry that was instrumental in that turnaround. True, the country has not been spared the effects of the mining industry’s retrenchment that has occurred in other parts of the world. However, foreign mining companies remain committed to doing business in Peru. And the government remains committed to attracting foreign investment and maintaining a strong mining industry. This commitment was evident in September 1999during the 24th Convention of the Institutos de Ingenieros de Minas del Peru in Arequipa, Peru. More than 3,000 mining industry professionals from around the world attended the convention. And Extemin, the accompanying exhibit, featured more than 450 companies, many from the United States, Canada, Australia, South Africa and other countries.

The 26th Peruvian Mining Convention (Convención de Ingeneieros de Minas del Perú) was held Sept. 15 through 19, 2003, in Arequipa. The convention was sponsored by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (Instituto de Ingeneiros de Minas del Peru). The Institute has been organizing these events since 1954. They are now held every other year. The conventions spotlight Peru’s mineral resources and have contributed to the tremendous growth of the Peruvian mining industry. This year’s meeting consisted of technical sessions, forums, field trips and social activities. It was held at the Tecsup Institute of Technology of Arequipa. More than 3,000 mining professionals attended. As always, the meeting was well organized, and participants expressed gratitude to the organizing committee for another successful meeting.

The 25th Peruvian Mining Convention (Convención de Ingeneieros de-Minas del Perú) was held Sept. 10-14, 2001, in Arequipa, Peru. The biennual meeting, sponsored by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (Instituto de Ingeneiros de Minas del Peru), is designed to showcase the Peruvian mining industry and to ?promote progress in the national mining sector.? The convention consisted of technical sessions, forums, field trips and social activities. The technical sessions featured 80 papers selected from more than 200 papers submitted. The well-organized 2001 meeting was held at the Tecsup Institute of Technology of Arequipa. The meeting was held in conjunction with Exposición Technologica Minera (Extemin), a mining trade exhibition. The2001 Extemin had representatives from more than 400 companies in attendance. In addition to the many Peruvian companies present, the trade exhibition featured pavilions representing the United States, Canada, Germany, Australia and Chile. Registration at the 2001 meeting was about 3,300, a conference record. The theme for the 2001 meeting was Mining: Society and Development. Mario Brescia was chairman of the organizing committee. He said in his opening remarks that ?this year?s meeting seeks to emphasize the commitment on the part of the [mining] companies to treat our natural resources responsibly, controlling any adverse impacts and giving priority to group benefits.? Consistent with this theme, many of the technical papers stressed environmental and social responsibility. Many successful examples of environ-mental and social responsibility on the part of the mining industry were presented in the technical sessions.

In order to gain competitiveness and compete at a global level, construction companies should improve their efficiency. The problem is even more relevant in the construction field, whose work processes find it hard to evolve towards new automated methods and techniques in the management field. For that reason, this paper suggests how construction companies could apply new technologies to implement automated management of environmental hazards. Based on a survey regarding the environmental risks presently experienced in construction sites, noise and dust were considered two of the main hazards. So in this paper a networked system for real time remote monitoring of the spatial distribution of dust in construction sites was developed. Such a system would relieve builders from the commitment of on-site surveys, allowing for a continuous monitoring of the site conditions and of the real exposure of each worker and pass-by to the pollutants generated by construction works. The main system requirements considered are: easy to deploy, reliable, as accurate as needed to be able to send real-time warnings and store a good estimation of the real exposure to which involved people have been subject to. So far the research produced a prototypical hardware for dust monitoring made up of wireless sensors which can be easily deployed on site. The sensors were calibrated by means of laboratory tests, where their measurements were compared with those collected by means of highly accurate instruments, which were taken as a reference. Thanks to these experiments, calibration curves for the sensors were worked out, showing also the measurement range of the sensors.

Numerous supergene manganese oxide deposits are developed inSouth China as a result of weathering of a thick sequence of Paleozoic marine Mn-bearing sedimentary rocks, consisting mainly of limestones, cherts and black shales that were intensely folded and faulted due to multiple episodes of tectonism since the late Triassic. The ore minerals are dominantly pyrolusite, cryptomelane, nsutite, lithiophorite and braunite. The supergene manganese ores contain Mn ranging from 20 to 44 wt per cent; manganese oxide deposits derived from cherts and black shales also contain recoverable levels of Co, Ni, Cu, Pb and Zn. 40Ar/39Ar dating of potassium-bearing manganese oxides reveals that extensive supergene manganese ore formation started at least in the earliest Miocene and persisted to the Present. Ages of the deposits show a close correlation to tectonic stability, with the oldest in tectonically quiescent areas and the youngest in active areas that have subjected to continuous uplift and thus significant denudation. The prolonged wet and hot climate since Oligocene and the balance between weathering and erosion, which is parameter to the tectonic stability, are the ultimate controls on the formation and distribution of South China supergene manganese oxide deposits. A comparação de processos de soldagem é uma tarefa complexa por envolver diversos atributos. A designação dos pesos dos atributos a serem avaliados é uma etapa fundamental na análise de problemas multicritérios; contudo, por vezes, a única informação que se obtém é a ordem de prioridade. O objetivo deste trabalho foi calcular os pesos das propriedades destinadas à comparação de processos de soldagem em aço inoxidável AISI 316L para o reparo de eixo naval com base na ordenação fornecida pelo tomador de decisão. Os atributos considerados foram taxa de deposição, energia de soldagem, rendimento econômico, diluição e relação reforço-largura. Os métodos de atribuição de pesos aplicados foram o de ponderação igual (Equal Weights), ordenação recíproca (Rank Reciprocal), somatória (Rank Sum), ordenação exponente (Rank Exponent) e o método do centroide (Rank Order Centroid). Para se verificar o efeito da escolha dos pesos estimados numa avaliação multicritério, avaliaram-se dados reais, aplicando-se a Ponderação Aditiva Simples (Simple Additive Weighting). Os resultados indicaram que diferentes atribuições de pesos podem alterar a posição das alternativas. Foi sugerido que a elaboração tabela ou gráficos com as distribuições de pesos pode ser útil para que o tomador decisão identifique a que melhor reflete as suas preferências.
