In a paper read at the meeting in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1875,* I showed that as a result of changing from open-topped to close-topped furnaces at the Glendon Iron Works, there had been a decided falling off in regularity of working, which we attributed to the very different distribution of the materials in the new method of filling. Subsequent experience has, on the whole, confirmed the opinions then expressed, and in 1881 we decided to try the modification of the Langen charger, shown on the accompanying drawings, thinking by its use to approximate to the distribution obtained by dumping the barrows at six equidistant points in the circumference of the open-topped furnaces. The top of the furnace is closed by a ring-shaped " bell," as we still call it, the outside of which is cylindrical and rests by the turned lower edge on the bored seat of a " loose ring," supported by the lower part of the hopper. The inside of the bell is an inverted frustrum of a cone, the central opening in which is closed by a cylindrical plug, which is prolonged into a pipe to carry off the gas.? This center-plug is connected by rods and chains to sectors on the ends of a forked lever, to the other end of which is attached, by a wire rope, the piston-rod of the blast-cylinder used in opening the top. The rods connected to the center-plug pass loosely through the apexes of triangular frames, to the other angles of which the bell is attached; it thus being suspended by four points when the top is open. The Connellsville coal-field is a separate strip of the upper coal measures, flanking the Chestnut Ridge along its western side. It extends from a point a few miles south of Uniontown, in Fayette County, following a northeasterly course parallel to the trend of Chestnut Ridge, through Fayette and Westmoreland counties, with its terminal prongs resting 011 the southern portion of Indiana County, north of the town of Blairsville. This belt of coking coal will average about three miles in width and over sixty miles in length, affording nearly, if not quite, two hundred square miles of this large coal-bed.

It is, perhaps, more important to put on record the particulars of experiments that are derided failures than those that are successful, as those of the latter class are certain to live, while the former may be lost sight of in a short time, and repeated by others. TO this end, I propose to give the particulars of a straight or no-bosh furnace just tried at the Chester (New Jersey) works, which was such a decided failure as to leave no doubt of the plan being wrong, and determining the necessity of a bosh of some kind, as of old. Some experiences during the past year led me to suppose that the bosh or belly of a furnace was unnecessary, and that the contraction of the walls toward the bottom for the stock to wedge in, in its descent, facilitated dirty walls and scaffolding; hence, irregularity and high fuel. I concluded, however, that a very shallow bosh for a skew-back support to the stock would be necessary, and that the proper place for this was in the tuyere-section, beginning just below the tuyeres and ending just above them, where there is nothing in the solid state but fuel, which is consuming, and no slipping or travel of stock takes place. The cubical capacity of a furnace of this design would necessarily be much less than in the old style, unless it was made very much higher. But I assumed that the loss of room for reduction could be overcome by making the size of the ore and stone charged much smaller, so that the gases would act more quickly. The next point was, what should be the size of the shaft, crucible, tuyere-circle, and tunnel-head for a given quantity of air? My first design was 12 feet diameter of shaft for 7000 feet of air, with a 9-foot crucible and 8-foot toyere-circle. This I soon reduced to 8-foot shaft diameter, which I concluded was large enongh for economical work, if regular travel of the stock on the walls could be maintained. I consulted with a number of experienced furnacemen and furnace-engineers, and the plan was well thought of by many of them; and, as I had also some offers of financial aid from them toward the risk of trying the experiment, my firm concluded

The hacienda Sauceda is one of the largest and finest haciendas in the vicinity of the City of Zacatecas, Mexico, and is said to reduce ores by the Patio process more cheaply than any other establishment. It receives its supply of ore from the San Acacio mine. This mine has been for some time, like most of the Zacatecas mines, out of bonanza, and yields, at present, ore of rather low grade. The silver occurs principally as silver-glance, ruby-silver and native silver, associated with pyrites of iron and copper, and some galena and zinc-blende, in a gangue of pure quartz, which takes the form of amythyst whenever the ore is of high grade. All the ore, as it comes from the mine, is broken by hand into small pieces, and sorted before it is delivered to the hacienda. Here it is first crushed dry in Chili mills, and then ground wet in arrastras to an impalpable powder. The sulphurets not decomposed in the patio process are separated in the settlers from the tailings and concentrated by hand. By roasting them in a reverberatory furnace with carbonate copperores, "magistral" is obtained. All machinery is driven by mulepower.

No question in the metallurgical chemistry of the present day seems to be so difficult to agree upon as the determination of phosphorus in iron and steel. To my knowledge, there are at present at least three different methods in use in the iron laboratories of the United States, viz.: The citric acid method, the molybdate-magnesia method, and the direct molybdate method,—the last-named method having been lately adopted. Each of these methods has its advocates, who take every pains to prove its advantages, and the incorrectness of the others; and much has been written for the purpose of securing the use of a standard method—as yet, however, without any result. There is no doubt, or ought to be none, that each of these methods gives correct results, when it is carefully conducted and every precaution is taken. But it is not only correct results that we want nowa-days. The demand is great, also, for getting results in the shortest possible time. I think it has been sufficiently proved that the direct molybdate method, the weighing of the precipitate, answers well in both respects. Being a pupil of Prof. Eggertz, I have myself used his method for years until quite recently, as it is described by Mr. Troilius in our Transactions, vol. x., p. 166 (but with some slight modifications), and I can safely say that the results of this method agree well with those of the molybdate-magnesia method. IN 1697 King William the Third granted unto his well-beloved subject Adolph Philipse, a certain tract of land, now known as Putnam County, N. Y. At the death of Adolph Philipse the land descended by inheritance to his nephew, Frederick Philipse. In 1751 his surviving three children partitioned the surface into nine parcels and divided them equally amongst themselves, but reserved the mineral rights which they held in common. Thus, at this early period in the history of the colonies, the existence of valuable deposits of iron-ores in Putnam County seems to have been a matter of common knowledge. Yet it is only within the last five years that the county has become a prominent, producer of iron-ore. Desultory mining had been carried on before that period at the Sump, Croft, arid Tilly Foster mines, but only a limited output was achieved, and few of our iron-masters suspected the existence of an abundance of good ores only forty miles from New York harbor. The accompanying map shows the location of those deposits of ore which are now generally known, and have been worked to considerable extent. Without doubt there are many more still awaiting the miner's pick, for no systematic exploration has ever been attempted within the borders of the county. Geologically, the occurrence of the ore is a counterpart of that of the New Jersey and Lake Champlain magnetites. The countryrock, and even the physical geography, are identical. Many small lakes dot the surface of the county. It is from these and their tributary springs and streams that the metropolis derives its farfamed Croton water. Abrupt hills divide the lakes and ponds. Some of the lakes, notably Lake Mahopac, are on the crest of hills, and are fed by subterraneous springs. The prominent mines of the county, in the order of their productiveness, are the Tilly Foster, Mahopac, Croton Magnetic, Sump, Croft, and Island mines. Of these, the first two are at present the only producers, and are quite exceptional in their nature. In fact they are the only ones of their kind in the Appalachian range, if not in the world.

This paper shows the metallurgical test results that led to the design of the heap leach facilities of Philex Mining Corporation. The design incorporates a water management model as process solution circulation is excessive with high rainfall intensity in the area. This poses problems in the operations requiring stringent controls than would be necessary in a less severe environment. The corporate perspective embraces on environmentally-sound mineral development. A budget is always provided to environmental management making certain that no industrial development is moved forward at the expense of the environment.

PHILIP NORTH MOORE was born on July 8, 1849, at Connersville, Ind. His father, a civil engineer, was descended from Henry Moore who came from Ireland in 1773 to live in Washington, Pa. Through his mother, Philip Moore was descended from John North, who came to America in 1635 and settled in Connecticut. The story of Mr. Moore's life as told by himself is given on pages 373-386 of T. A. Rickard's "Interviews with Mining Engineers." He studied at Miami University, where he gained the degree of A.B. in 1870, and A.M. in 1873. In 1920 his alma muter conferred on him the honorary degree of LL.D. He, as a special student, was a member of the class of 1872 at the School of Mines of Columbia University.

OUTCROPS of coal have bees discovered is many localities is the Philippine archipelago, and practically all of the larger islands contain deposits of this mineral. Very little prospecting has been done to determine the value of the various coal-bearing areas, but so far as known, the largest and most promising fields are found : (1) is northern Cebu; (2) is the small island of Batan, a part of the province of Albay is southeasten Luzon; (3) is the somewhat larger island of Polillo, off the east coast of Luzon, and (4) is southern Mindoro, sear the small coast tows of Bulalacao. Northern Panay, south-central Cebu, and various localities is southern Luzon, Masbate, Negros, and Mindanao also afford evidences of the existence of coal-beds, the extent and value of which have not yet bees proved. The general position of these islands and districts is shows on the map of a portion of the Philippine Islands, Fig. 1. Some of these coal-fields have been known for many years (coal was discovered is Cebu 1827 and is Batas is 1842),1 and several futile attempts were made by the Spaniards to operate mines is these districts. But owing to many circumstances, chief among which were indifferent management, the political unrest of the islands, natural difficulties of transportation, and those inherent in the mining of steeply-inclined and somewhat irregular seams, no considerable output was ever obtained from any of these mines, and the fuel required is the many departments of industrial and political life has continued to be drawn largely from Australia and Japan. In order for Philippines Associated Smelting and Refining Corporation (PASAR) Corporation to remain a leader in the copper smelting and refining industry, continuous improvements in plant technology are required. Reliable performance of plant equipment is essential for a competitive smelting operation. PASAR is constantly searching for the best equipment and technology to allow us to manufacture products more efficiently. When the Smelter was commissioned in 1993, the Flash Furnace off-gas treatment system was a constant source of problems. There were frequent shut-downs of the electrostatic precipitator due to material buildups on the discharge electrodes and collecting plates. In 1998, the precipitator was successfully upgraded to eliminate the buildup problems and to increase the collection efficiency. The upgrade greatly reduced down time and maintenance, and the enhanced collection efficiency also eliminated pluggage problems and material losses in the Acid Plant. This extensive precipitator upgrade was accomplished during a 30-day Smelter turnaround.

The author is the leader of the Extractive Industries Task Force of the International Valuation Standards Committee. The Task Force has developed an Extractive Industries section for inclusion in the International Valuation Standards (IVS). The Extractive Industries Guidance Note provides comprehensive standards for valuation of all minerals and petroleum industry property types for all valuation/appraisal purposes. The document is scheduled for release as an exposure draft for public comment by December 2003, then it will be finalized for publication in the IVS in mid-2004. This paper discusses the content and philosophy of the Extractive Industries Guidance Note within the context of the framework of the IVS. It also discusses the international implications and implementation of this IVS addition.

Since 1865 when Congress moved to create a Federal Mining Bureau, successive legislations have given rise to the current '!Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, 1969. Coal beds from 22 feet to 20 feet thick are mined under covers from 50 to 2800 feet with full and partial pillar recovery equally popular and accounting for a total of 54% of the mines. Pillar recovery and roof support practices vary, and each operator must submit an overall roof control plan (within specific guidelines) for approval before undertaking any development. The guidelines relate to dimensions of openings, details of support, sequence of extraction, limits of extraction and caving details. Experienced and professional staff of M.E.S.A. provide roof control plans and make inspections and grant-approvals of principles of support and minimum support in pillar extraction, with provision for modifications with time. Guidance is given with training programmes and standards of supervision. All of these aspects are approached in the spirit of the Congress declaration that the first priority and concern must be the health and safety of the miner.

"Hydraulic mining consists of coal erosion by powerful jet s of water from hydraulic monitors operated by remote control. The broken coal is crushed and mixed with water and then transported from the face to the surface using gravity whenever possible. This is a simple, safe and productive method. It will easily satisfy North American productivity standards if the structural features and coal properties are favourable for water jet cutting technology (Kaiser Resources Ltd. , hydraulic mine). General ConsiderationIn open-pit mines, placer mining (Fig. I) and hydroelectric construction projects, hydraulic earth moving techniques have been successfully applied. The stripping and transporting of the overburden has been accomplished by means of large monitor jets augmented by slurry pumps and pipes. An extension of this technique has led to the underground extraction of coal and ores. To date, the method has been most successfully used in undergrond coal mining, because the coal can be easily cut and flushed away by water jets, and the rocks of the roof strata can be left behind. Due to this favourable situation, the hydraulic mining definition only relates to the underground coal mines.At present, there are four basic types of hydraulic mining, which can be defined according to the coal breaking technique used in each case. The methods are briefly discussed below:(1) Coal excavation may be carried out by conventional techniques, but the mine is designed and equipped for the hydraulic transport of the mineral from the working place to surface. Under these circumstances, the coal breaking may not be influenced by the water jet, however it may be indirectly involved. For example, pre-loosening of the coal may be done by water infusion-hydraulic fracturing. Water may also be used to flush the broken coal, which has been excavated either by drilling and blasting or by mechanical cutting, into the transport flumes. In other cases, a mechanical loader may load the coal directly into the hydraulic transport system, without using any water for the extraction process. This hydraulic mining concept is primarily used for hard and impermeable coal, such as anthracite."

The optimized crusher kinematics is one of the key factors for high performance. To fine tune the crusher kinematics and crushing chambers one needs to know how different parameters affect. The main cone crusher parameters are head angle and diameter, gyration point, shaft speed, eccentricity, stroke length, and inclination and design of crushing cavity. Selecting the correct combination of these parameters is a multi task optimization challenge. In practical life there are more factors to achieve satisfactory performance, like crushing chamber wear and profile management keeping the performance constant over the whole wear life, control of crusher frame loads, ability to handle disturbances in feed material etc. The extensive research work has lead to a solution that enables the highest possible material density in the crushing chamber. This design provides maximum reduction of processed material and thus increased share of 0/10 mm product. High density in the cavity offers further benefits, such as high throughput capacity, less material contact with wear parts and even load on crusher frame and bearings. The challenge that an equipment supplier involved with high density crushing is how to design a robust cone crusher, which is able to cope with the high crushing forces due to high resistance from the crushed material against the gyration movement. Site specific geotechnical data, deposit characteristics and method of mining are key factors when assessing an appropriate slope design philosophy. Mining geotechnics should be viewed as an iterative design process linked closely with mine planning, development and operational safety constraints. This case study presents geotechnical investigations for slope design at Macraes Flat Gold Mine using kinematic, probabilistic and economic analyses tempered with knowledge of site specific conditions. The recommended designs not only reduce early waste stripping tonnages but also provide data to optimise final walls.

Newmont USA Limited owns and operates the Phoenix Mine near Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA. The existing milling facility has operated since 2006 (House, 2010). Following the startup of the milling operation, and coupled with the upswing in the copper market, Newmont realized that Phoenix had no process option to treat transition and oxide copper ores. This meant that potentially revenue generating ore would be mined as waste. With no system in place to treat the transition and oxide copper, work began to determine the most feasible approach. After evaluating multiple options, the flow sheet was set for a runof- mine (ROM) heap leach pad and solvent extraction/ electrowinning plant (L-SX/EW). This paper will discuss the eight years of successes and challenges with developing the copper L-SX/EW plant and achieving commercial production of copper cathode.

The practice of drying phosphate in Florida is as old as the industry, which began a little more than half a century ago. The methods, however, have changed considerably. At first, the natural process of exposure to the sun and air was used, later supplemented by wood fires beneath open-air stationary dry kilns and drying towers of various designs. It was not until the early nineties that rotary driers came into use, and at first they were of very small design and fired with wood. As the industry grew and tonnage increased, so likewise grew the number and size of rotary driers, until today the largest installations are 6 ft. up to 7 ft. 6 in. in diameter, and 55 to 60 ft. long, fired with crude oil. The reasons for drying phosphate rock are: (1) to eliminate freight on water in the shipment and (2) to facilitate the good grinding qualities required by the buyers in their acidulation. Phosphate pebbles vary materially in natural characteristics and each property has a direct bearing on the processing. In making comparisons of cost and operating conditions, the following are usually taken into consideration: 1. The hard dense pebbles, which contain very little interior moisture and 6 to 8 per cent total moisture, usually produced from the low-grade deposits. 2. The lighter, porous pebbles, which contain 4 to 5 per cent interior moisture and a total moisture ranging from 9 to 15 per cent. 3. The product of recovery operations using oily reagents, containing from 15 to 25 per cent moisture. 4. The size of the pebbles Usually the plus 5-mesh material is considered as "coarse rock"; the minus 5-mesh plus 24-mesh is "fine rock," and the minute particles below 24 mesh are called "concentrate." 5. The amount of moisture allowed in the dried product. The practice is generally to dry down to 1.5 to 2 per cent moisture. There is, however, an actual range in guarantee of from 1 per cent maximum to 3 per cent maximum.
