The clay occurs in irregualr beds overlying the Prairie du Chien Dolomite and the St. Peters Sandstone near Hersey, St. Croix County. The raw Wisconsin clay contained 65% quartz and 35% clay minerals. The Na20to CaO ratio was 0.234. Suspension viscosity tests of the raw clay gave results only slightly better than water alone, even after treatment with activator materials. Sedimentation treatment reduced the quartz in the decantate to 5% after 240 min (four hours). Twenty minutes of sedimentation produced a decantate with 27.5% quartz which was found as effective as the 5% quartz decantate in pelletizing behavior. The 20 min decantate was used in subsequent tests. The decantate was filtered and dried at 110°(230°F). The minus 200 mesh portion of this was added directly to the magnetite concentrate. Pellets were made in a laboratory sized disc pelletizer from pastes consisting of ore concentrate, balling water (9%) and binder (clay, or clay + resins, or resins). The pastes were premixed in a Waring blender. The binders were: (1) 1% of a commercially used Western Bentonite; (2) 1 % or 3% of the Wisconsin clay (raw, or 20 min decantate); (3) 20 min decantate washed with activator solutions, (to exchange Na for Ca in the clay); (4) decantate with activator added in the balling water; (5) decantate with organic resins; (6) organic resins. Measurements of the 0.46 m (18 in.) Green Drop Number, the Dry Strength and the Fired Strength (fired at 1260°C (2300°F) for 30 min) were made. The dry and fired compressive strengths were determined on an Instron testing machine using a C-load cell and a F-load cell, respectively. The cross-head speed was 0.004 m/sec (0.1 in./min) for both. The results of each measurement were averaged for 15 pellets. A summary of those results is presented in [Table 1]. More detailed results and procedures are presented in another report.7 In addition to the effects on pellet strength due to various binders the effect of varying magnetite concentrate characteristics is noted in [Table l]. There, a few comparative data are shown for Cornwall, PA Magnetite, which has a generally liner particle size than the Black River Falls magnetite which was used for most of the tests.

THE discovery of oil in 1901 on the Spindletop dome, Texas, inaugurated a new industry on the Gulf Coast, an industry which has grown with the discovery of successive fields, until today it engages the services of thousands of workers and employs enormous capital. New fields are being discovered from time to time and doubtless some still remain to be found, though of late years discoveries have become more infrequent. Nowadays several hundred dry holes are drilled each year in a fruitless and blind effort to discover new fields, for as yet geologic science has developed no effectual method of locating the coastal oil deposits in advance of drilling. Moreover, despite the occasional discovery of new fields, the total production of the Gulf Coast is today no greater than it was in 1906, for the added production of the new fields has been offset by the rapid decline and more or less complete exhaustion of some of the older ones. Careful geologic work within the fields has in some cases increased the production temporarily, but has developed no really new supplies. The Gulf Coast oil industry seems to have passed its period of greatest expansion and to be declining at a fairly steady rate, and this condition is naturally viewed with alarm by the more farsighted operators. In my opinion, the time has come for the adoption of radical and aggressive methods of prospecting, and a fraction of the money wasted yearly in drilling shallow wells in hopeless locations might well be devoted to this purpose. The role of biological agents in the gold mining industry is currently limited to the use of microorganisms in bioleaching and bioremediation. However, there is a variety of possibilities in which biotechnology could aid the mining industry in the future. In this article we discuss the potential for the development of these novel biotechnologies and the role they can play in the exploration for new gold deposits, the processing of ores and the post-mining remediation of sites. The development of these biotechnologies has been enabled by rapid advances in our molecular-level understanding of the role microorganisms play in the solubilisation, dispersion and precipitation of gold. An understanding of the distribution of microbial species in soils overlying mineralisation can be utilised to develop bioindicator systems that assist with gold exploration. An in-depth knowledge of how microorganisms interact with gold complexes is being used to develop in-field biosensors, supporting exploration. Processing technologies may be improved based on advances in our understanding of the interactions between microorganisms, ore minerals, cyanide and gold. For instance, cyanide-producing microorganisms are being investigated for use in in situ leaching of gold. In turn, the use of cyanide-utilising microorganisms for the degradation of cyanide is being explored. Combined, the implementation of these biotechnologies in the gold mining sector may revolutionise the industry, leading to greener, more efficient exploration for and extraction of gold.CITATION:Zammit, C M, Cook, N, Ciobanu, C L, Brugger, J and Reith, F, 2013. Factors that have influenced mineralization in the Valley and Ridge and Piedmont provinces in Alabama are not clearly understood. Lithology and structure are recognizable factors in the Valley and Ridge province, where barite, lead, and zinc sulfides occur in structurally complex areas of Cambrian and Ordiovician carbonate rocks. Metal mineralization in the Piedmont province indicates a complex relationship with factors such as favorable host rock, proximity to intrusive or high-grade metamorphic rocks, several metamorphic events and separate or related structural events. Lineaments, as used herein, refer to naturally occurring linear features consisting of topographic, vegetative or soil tonal alignments that are at least partially continuous for distances greater than a mile (Lattman, 1958). Lineaments in Alabama were first recognized by J. G. Newton in 1970, using Apollo 9 series photographs. Subsequent studies delineated the features (Powell and others, 1970) and suggested relationships to structural and hydrologic factors. More recent work has explored relationships to mineralization, environmental geology and the tectonic framework of the Appalachians (Drahovzal and Copeland, 1970; Drahovzal and Neathery, in press). The lineaments recognizable on Apollo 9 photography probably represent fractures, some of which may reflect geofractures that bound major basement blocks. The lineaments defined in Alabama range from about 4 miles to nearly 200 miles in length. Most of the lineaments are straight, but some are arcuate; some appear to terminate at the intersections with other lineaments but most cross each other with no offset. Some lineaments pass through areas of structural disruption such as terminations, offsets and changes in structural style, but others show no such relationships. High ambient temperatures combined with high surface humidity in the north of Australia and, in particular, the northern areas of the Northern Territory can make underground workplaces relatively inhospitable at certain times of the year. . Woodcutters' silver/lead/zinc mine, situated some 80 km south of Darwin, would be the most northerly underground operation of any significance in Australia. As such, during the build up to the wet season, it has a particular problem of ventilating a deep underground mine with already high dry and wet bulb temperatures at the surface. The Mine Management Act and Regulations mention only that workplaces shall be 'in a fit state for a person to work in or occupy'. Woodcutters therefore set in progress a Heat Stress Program to endeavour to set standards which would be more measurable and justifiable. The aim of the program was to compile a record of ambient atmospheric conditions in the working areas such that areas and/or work activities generating high ambient temperatures and humidities could be identified, quantified and qualified. Once the analysis stage of this program was completed, Woodcutters compiled a set of recommendations for the continued monitoring for, and control of, heat stress conditions to ensure that no underground employee was placed at risk from 'heat stress'. These recommendations are discussed in this paper.

Economically important heavy minerals have been studied in the sediments of offshore Alabama and Mississippi. Sandy samples have been collected from a 200 square mile area from Dauphin to Horn Islands. The minerals concentrate in sediments under 10-35 feet of water and may reach 2.4% by weight. The distribution of total heavies is related to the hydrodynamics of offshore Alabama-Mississippi; the greatest concentrations are in the Gulf where the longshore current is diverted from its westerly flow. Preliminary observations indicate that the distribution of individual minerals can be correlated with wave energy, particle size, specific gravity, and morphology of the mineral grains. The coarser, lighter minerals--kyanite, sillimanite and staurolite--are concentrated in relatively low energy areas in the Mississippi Sound and at the end of Dauphin Island in the Gulf; maximum concentration for each is 34.5%, 6.0% and 43.2%, respectively, of the heavy minerals. The smaller, more denseminerals--ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene, zircon and monazite--are concentrated in high energy areas in the Gulf; maximum concentration for each, respectively, is 42.0%, 5.9%, 9.652, 10.7% and 1.3% of the heavy minerals. On the basis of a minimum concentration of 1% heavy minerals, two areas have been identified and the total amounts of different minerals have been calculated to a depth of 25 feet of sediment. The data are preliminary and in no way indicate recoverable reserves, but they do show that on the order of 20 million tons of heavies exist. These deposits should be termed "indicated resources".

This paper deals with an experimental programme carried out with a gold analyser in the period June to September 1979 at Loraine Gold Mines. The results were found to be reproducible, with no overall or conditional bias when the measurements were compared with those obtained from chip samples. The standard error of estimation of a 3 m reef exposure, which was the sampling interval, can be reduced by a factor of 2,5 if the complete stretch is scanned, rather than the taking of one chip sample in its centre. Complete statistical and computational procedures were developed for the fitting of the normal-Iognormal model to observed analyser data and for the determination of the most likely gold grade for a particular analyser measurement. (This corection procedure is necessary since a significant number of negative analyser measurements can be observed.) Panel averages of uncorrected scans showed a small conditional bias relative to those of corrected scans. However, uncorrected panel averages can be used for on-the-spot decisions regarding whole panels. For standard calculations of ore reserves, use should be made of corrected scans. Under reasonable assumptions, the use of the detector in the selective mining of low-grade narrow reefs such as the Basal Reef at Loraine Gold Mines, when compared with the conventional chip-sampling method, can result in a saving of as high as R40 million in present-money terms over the life of a project. The difference could be even larger in a highly variable reef like the B Reef at Loraine Gold Mines.

The fire safety design for road tunnels includes the following aspects: active systems, passive provisions and operational procedures. The active systems include the smoke control system, fire suppression system, detection system and fire fighter’s assistance systems. Passive provisions include escape passages, fire separation and fire resistance systems. The operational procedures refer to fire fighter access, reporting and alerts, evacuation processes and crowd control.Currently, these systems are typically designed by different designers or teams. These systems are intended to work together in a coordinated manner to provide the desired safety outcome. However, in practice, this is not always happening. The fire engineering process is supposed to bring together all these aspects and arrive at an integrated safety system. The fi re engineering process in practice is not integrating the design with the practice or reality and is thus arriving at less than desirably efficient safety systems.The example of design inputs shows how disconnected each system design basis is. The smoke control system design is based on the design fire size. The performance of the smoke control system is to achieve a smoke free environment for a defined space for a particular fire size – the design fire. The fire suppression system – most commonly sprinklers or deluge systems, is designed according to codes and to achieve a certain water discharge rate. The fire detection system is designed to detect temperature rise/rate of rise and perhaps density of smoke. Fire separation is determined to provide a certain period of service – mostly for structural elements. Escape route size and location is determined mostly by code compliance. Evacuation procedures are determined by Authority operational requirements rather than human behaviour.To arrive at an integrated fire safety system, the design basis and performances must be coordinated. An approach using fire scenarios would ensure all systems are designed to a common performance requirement. This paper will discuss how the current design approach outcomes compared with a fire scenario approach. More effective and efficient fire safety systems would require the stake holders to understand the implication of this approach and to embrace this through the fire engineering process.

FIELD PARTIES of the Geological Survey of Canada have, in recent years, mapped several areas east and northeast of Flin Flon (9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 118) (1). In all these areas the mineral deposits show a close geographical relation to faults although the immediate control of most of the known ore deposits appears to be folded structures in the rocks (8, 11, 18, 19). Air photographs and published geological maps were studied in order to ascertain whether or not the mineral deposits in the Flin Flon-Snow Lake mineral belt as a whole show any spatial relationship to faults. It was found that most of them do show a distinct geographical association with faults, or with topographic features that may be faults. It is further apparent on air photographs that a major lineament, for composite of lineaments, follows approximately the contact between gneisses and schists of the Kisseynew complex on the north, and Amisk volcanic rocks on the south. However, this Kisseynew lineament is not continuous and, especially in the eastern half of the district, it is exceedingly irregular in plan. Parts of this lineament have been mapped as faults (9, 10, 12, 14), other parts have been shown as stratigraphic contacts (1, 2, 21, 27), and still other parts have not been studied except by reconnaissance methods. It is suggested that the Kisseynew lineament may be due to a deformed fault that extends easterly from a point about 25 miles west-northwest of Flin Flon to a point at least 10 miles northeast of Wekusko lake and that the mineral deposits.

Residents of Maxwell Hill, a suburb of Beckley, West Virginia, reported from January until March of 1988 a series of earth tremors. The tremors rattled dishes, and the noises associated with tremors were sometimes loud enough to wake people at night. These events were puzzling because Beckley is in an area of low seismic activity. Maxwell Hill is located above abandoned coal mines, though no direct subsidence damage to surface structures has been documented. A research program was initiated to determine whether subsurface ground movements associated with the abandoned mines could be responsible for the seismic activity experienced at the surface. A hypothesis is proposed which states that seismic disturbances can be caused by abandoned mine failure when two conditions are met. First, some instability must exist at the mine level. The most likely cause of instability is the failure of pillars of coal that were left for support at the time of mining. Second, subsurface movements can result in significant seismic activity only when the rock above the mine contains at least one very strong and brittle layer that is prone to fail violently through rupture or fault slip movement. Analysis of the data indicates that both hypothesized conditions for mine-related seismicity appear to have been satisfied in the case of Maxwell Hill. It has therefore been concluded that the earth tremors experienced by Maxwell Hill residents probably are related to the abandoned mines. Analysis of the potential magnitude of these events indicates that they are unlikely to cause significant surface danlage. The probability that future events will disturb the residence of Maxwell Hill should be quite low based on the identified mechanism.

Solid. dense, air-cooled slag can fulfil most, if not all, the functions of natural stone for civil engineering purposes. The value of pumice, also, has long been appreciated, and processes for the manufacture of similar synthetic material for light-weight concretes and insulating fills have been developed in past years.Foamed slag is, in effect, blast furnace pumice and is often referred to on the European continent as metallurgical pumice. It is made by the treatment of molten blast furnace slags with a critical quantity of water during which process the slag cools and expands into a sponge-like mass. The connection between foamed slag and air-cooled slag is also considered and a basis for density control given.All blast furnace slag cannot be foamed to give a product which would comply with B.S.S.877; 1939 Foamed Blast Furnace Slag. A large proportion of the total output of molten slag lacks the necessary inherent properties. This investigation attempts to discover the conditions necessary for the production of foamed slag capable of meeting the British specification.EARLIER WORKIt was generally accepted (Parker, 1951; Gallai-Hatchard, 1955) that the spongy structure of foamed slag was caused mechanically by steam trapped in the slag when it was poured into water. It was assumed that slags which would not foam would not trap steam, because their viscosities and surface tensions were unsatisfactory, on account of temperature and/or composition. The earliest systematic investigation was made by Frisak (1923) who attempted to establish a limiting chemical composition for foamable slags. He decided that foamable slags covered most blast furnace slag compositions on the basis of silica, alumina, and lime, and further "that the replacement of lime by magnesia up to 15 per cent has no noteworthy effect on foamability, that moderate quantities of alkalis are not deleterious, that sulphur raises the foamability and that MnO is only deleterious in the presence of 1...

The epizonal Ag-Pb-Zn vein deposit at San Bartolome is characterised by a base-metal sulphide assemblage containing the spectacular development of interpenetrating, bladed networks of pyrrhotite which have been replaced by marcasite and pyrite. A similar assemblage displaying the same crystal habits and textures are also a diagnostic feature of the Sn and SnAg deposits ofBolivia. On this basis, it is reasonable to conclude that both deposits were formed from fluids of similar nature and origin. Although no economic accumulation of Sn is known in San Bartolome, further comparison of the geologic setting, age, mineralogy, fluid inclusion data and magmatic association of this deposit with the Bolivian systems has highlighted additional similarities consistent with a hypothesis that more extensive Sn mineralisation might exist in the San Bartolome area.

"The start of mining operations often raises serious financial problems. In marginal cases promoters frequently demand financial aid from governments.In the past, the financial assistance has taken the form of gifts, procurement contracts, etc., but aid in such form has been severely criticized. A new formula has been developed to provide a more equitable distribution of the revenues accruing to the government and to private capital.The benefits to these two parties have been evaluated in an hypothetical case and compared in terms of internal rates of return on their investment, their shares of the undiscounted cash flows and their primary profits.The method based on the non-zero sum game theory provides a means for suggesting the lowest feasible annual production and the optimal sum contributed by the government in the form of outright gift, equity capital and convertible bonds. Other financial hypotheses can also be optimized by the computerized analysis."

N ATURAL gas is found in several provinces of Canada, particularly Ontario, New Brunswick, and Alberta. The largest producer is Alberta, and there the most important field is the Turner Valley, where some low-gravity crude oil and naphtha are associated with the gas. Last year there was produced from the Turner Valley field an average of 3,462 barrels, or about 450 tons, of oil a day. The gas flow from the wells in this field bears such a high ratio to the oil which comes from them that, despite the enforcement of a measure of conservation, it amounted to the vast quantity of 6,000 tons a day, or more than 2,000,000 tons a year. Prior to the application of any conservation measures, the gas flow was at one time of the order of 12,000 tons a day. The heat content of one ton of the gas is almost equal to that of two tons of coal. A certain amount, say, 10 per cent," of the gas is used in Calgary and surrounding towns and in re-pressuring the Bow Island gas field, but the greater part of it goes to waste. What are the possibilities of making use of this waste gas, in whole or part? The possibilities of using it profitably as fuel for domestic and industrial purposes have undoubtedly been carefully considered by the Company which now distributes a part of the gas to cities and towns in Alberta. But the relative sparness of the population and the cost of pipe lines makes such possibilities strictly limited. There are, however, distinct possibilities of making use of at !east a part of the gas for the production of a variety of chemical products and of liquid motor fuel. The present paper is devoted to outlining some of these possibilities. About three-quarters (by weight) of the Turner Valley waste gas consists of methane, the lightest and, chemically speaking, the simplest of hydrocarbon gases. The remaining quarter consists of heavier hydrocarbon gases-ethane, propane, and butane. Formerly, naphtha was separated from the well gas by a simple process of self-refrigeration. The gas coming from the wells at a pressure of, say, 1,200 to 1,800 lb., was passed through simple cylindrical vessels fitted with baffles and known as 'separators'. The pressure was allowed to drop to, say, 300 lb. in the separators, and the cooling effect secured by this expansion brought about separation of the naphtha. The naphtha thus obtained was 'wild', that is, it had a high vapour pressure owing to the presence in it of dissolved and liquefied gas. In order to reduce the vapour pressure to a level at which the naphtha could be shipped, this gas was removed either by distilling it out through a 'stabilizing' column or, according to the practice at many wells, merely by allowing the naphtha to 'weather' in open tanks (heated by coils if necessary) until the gas had been driven off in to the air.

THE Philippine Islands. have produced no oil commercially, nevertheless, oil is known to be present at various places in the islands.1 Although all attempts to produce oil commercially have failed, no intelligent, persistent exploration has been carried out. The Richmond Petroleum Corpn. a subsidiary of the Standard Oil Co. of California) and a syndicate, headed by Ralph Arnold are at present engaged in exploring Bondoc Peninsula in Tayabas Province, one of the promising Philippine areas, in a manner that promises to test the petroleum possibilities adequately and intelligently. How can the petroleum resources of an entirely undeveloped area like the Philippines be estimated, where not even the areal extent of the various geologic formations is known? Obviously no calculated figure for assured future production can be derived. Yet a study of the evidence of the occurrence of petroleum, the character of the possible reservoir beds, the probable source rocks, the character and size of favorable structures, and the area over which petroleum-bearing rocks are known to occur, will throw some light on the question. The fact that rocks of the same geologic age and similar composition have been explored and are producing in Borneo, Sumatra, and Java to the south and in Formosa and Japan to the north also affect the problem, so that one can obtain some idea of the quantity of petroleum that may reasonably be expected from the Philippines. It is this measure of the possibilities rather than a definite calculation of petroleum reserves that is presented herewith. This paper will not attempt to describe, nor even to enumerate in detail, the occurrences of petroleum in the Philippines as such data have already been published. Extensive exploration is being undertaken throughout the world in search for heavy minerals, particularly rutile and other titanium minerals. The federal government is sponsoring research involving rutile ores and recovery of stockpile-grade concentrates from domestic sources. Producers are being forced to turn to deposits with a heavy mineral content as low as 0.50% (essentially rutile and zircon). The North Carolina State University Minerals Research Laboratory investigated the possibilities of recovering heavy minerals from the amine tailings of the Texasgulf Inc.'s phosphate plant at Aurora, North Carolina. One laboratory beneficiation procedure using gravity, electrostatic and magnetic processes, resulted in the recovery of 78.7% of the heavy minerals in the amine tailings. Based on this percentage recovery and the present rate of phosphate mining, approximately 13,000 tons per year of heavy minerals (principally ilmenite and zircon) with a potential value of approximately $1,045,000 (1977) could be recovered. The economic potential for recovery of these heavy minerals appears to be favorable. A flotation procedure for up-grading the heavy minerals content in the amine tailings has been developed at the Laboratory, which could allow for concentration of heavy minerals and storing them in tailings area other than main tailings for future processing.
