Any man-made structure will eventually decay, but we are basically concerned with the prevention of corrosion within a fairly limited time span. How corrosion can be minimized by design, the removal of oxides and a careful choice of paint systems is discussed, and mention is made of the electrical nature of most anticorrosive systems. Also discussed are the characteristics of certain paint binders and how mechanical properties will differ for various environments. Corrosion of a substrate by acidic breakdown products of some paints is mentioned in conjunction with a discussion on convenience versus ultimate performance. A brief mention is made of the three main components of a paint system, and the principal types of paint are placed in broad categories, with the main strength and weaknesses of each type listed.

"Grinding mill hydrostatic trunnion bearings require an external pumping source to provide and maintain the oil film between the bearing members. In order to guarantee a predetermined minimum film thickness, the lubrication system tends to be oversized. The oil film is ""indirectly"" controlled by flow, pressure and temperature monitors with fixed settings on the conservative side. This can lead to excessive maintenance and abbreviated life for the lubrication system components. A reliable method of monitoring actual film thickness would not only provide greater mill availability, but also minimize maintenance costs.This paper describes the instrumentation installed in Dominion hydrostatic bearings, and presents results of field tests where the output of that instrumentation was recorded under various operating conditions.IntroductionThe trend toward larger and more sophisticated grinding mills has made the operators of these machines increasingly vulnerable to financial loss, as the cost of downtime and repairs has increased directly with machine size. In order to guard against such losses, it is becoming imperative that large, sophisticated grinding mills be equipped with protective instrumentation to monitor some of the critical operating parameters and to identify events and trends which, if they go unnoticed, can lead to excessive maintenance costs and machine downtime. The idea of protective monitoring systems is not new. The operators of certain types of machinery where a high degree of safety is required or where machinery health can deteriorate very rapidly, as in the case of high-speed turbo-machinery, have long been using protective instrumentation on their machines. The increased awareness of the benefits of monitoring machinery conditions and the availability of reliable and relatively low-cost instrumentation of a large range of sophistication is making the practice now widespread. Traditionally, grinding mills have not been considered as high-risk machinery requiring instrumented protection. However, the trend, mentioned earlier, toward employing fewer, but larger capacity, mills increases the risk of significant disruption of production, and therefore measures to minimize the risks are desirable."

The olfactory system (sense of smell) is crucial to the ability of fish to avoid predators, recognize kin, and synchronize reproduction (Baldwin et al. 2003). Copper (Cu) has been shown to impair olfaction in juvenile freshwater life stages of salmonids (including Pacific salmon and trout) in some laboratory experiments; and in the United States, public concerns have been expressed that current regulatory criteria for Cu in fresh water are not adequately protective of olfactory function in salmonids (e.g., OSU 2007; Pearson 2007). These concerns have largely been raised because some Cu concentrations that have caused olfactory impairment in salmonids in the laboratory are less than Cu concentrations that have been shown to reduce salmonid survival, growth, or reproduction (the effects endpoints that are typically considered in deriving ambient water quality criteria). However, two important and interrelated points that must be considered: (1) freshwater Cu criteria are "driven" by the sensitivities of several invertebrate species that are more sensitive than the olfactory impairment threshold in salmonids when (2) the influence of water chemistry on Cu bioavailability is properly considered in deriving Cu criteria. Bioavailability refers to the ability of various chemical forms of Cu to interact with receptors on the surface(s) of organisms and thus directly cause toxicity or uptake by the organisms. The toxicity of Cu and other metals to aquatic organisms is a function of water chemistry. For example, acute Cu toxicity in fresh water generally decreases as pH, water hardness (Ca2+ and Mg2+), alkalinity, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations increase (Meyer et al. 2007). The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has recommended hardness-based freshwater aquatic life criteria for Cu and other metals since the 1980s (e.g., USEPA 1985); and hardness-based metals criteria decrease (i.e., become more restrictive) as water hardness decreases. More recently, the USEPA has recommended freshwater aquatic life criteria for Cu based on the biotic ligand model (BLM; USEPA 2007), which accounts for the influence of multiple water chemistry parameters, including DOC, pH, alkalinity, Ca2+, Mg2+, and several other cations and anions. The BLM-based Cu criteria generally decrease as DOC concentration, pH, alkalinity, and water hardness decrease. Because DOC has a stronger influence on Cu bioavailability than water hardness, hardness-based and BLM-based Cu criteria can differ considerably. For example, in water that has low DOC and high hardness, the hardness-based Cu criterion would be relatively high (because it is driven by the high hardness) but the BLM-based Cu criterion would be relatively low (because it is driven by the low DOC). Thus, any evaluation of the protectiveness of Cu criteria against a given effect, such as olfactory impairment, must properly account for the chemistry of the exposure water. Meyer et al. (2013) compiled data on Cu-induced olfactory impairment and olfactory-induced behavioral effects from tests in which BLM parameters were measured. They demonstrated that the USEPA's BLM-based freshwater life criteria for Cu are protective against olfactory impairment, because it adequately accounts for water chemistry (whereas the USEPA's hardness-based Cu criteria are not consistently protective). Olfactory impairment by Cu is now receiving increased attention in Canada and Europe (e.g., Wall 2013; Stang 2013). Accordingly, in this paper we have expanded the analysis of Meyer et al. (2013) to consider copper guidelines from various other countries and whether these guidelines are protective against olfactory impairment.

RECENTLY completed experimental work, carried out in the department of geology at the University of Wisconsin, aiming at a prevention of silicosis in industry has been reported in the American Mineralogist. A vast amount of work on silicosis has been reported in the literature, the clinical aspects having been especially well covered. A host of critical observations have been made on the variations in the nature of the silicosis problem in different environments, and a great deal of valuable experimental work has helped to clarify these observations. At present a greater amount of information of a critical sort is available than ever before, which affords a more sound basis for interpretive thought. It has been observed in industry that essentially pure silica dust gives rise to silicosis. Jones would modify this conclusion to place the responsibility on sericite, a silicate mineral present in the siliceous dust. Material such as granite dust, which carries a high free silica (quartz) content, is also a silicosis hazard. But sericite, too, is usually present in granite. In general it is widely believed that silicosis is caused by the presence in the lung of silicic acid regardless of the source. This view is adopted here.

"Abstract -Biotite from aplite that appears to have crystallized simultaneously with disseminated Cu-Mo mineralization at MacLeod Lake in northern Quebec yields K-Ar dates in the range 2032 ± 44 Ma to '2f1:)1 ± 47 Ma. The mean value, 2065 Ma, is some 400 Ma younger than the 2485 ± 64 Ma date obtained from a hornblende concentrate separated from a granodiorite sill that is spatially, but apparently not genetically, associated with the disseminated Cu-Mo deposit. The mean biotite date of 2065 Ma at MacLeod Lake, a K-Ar date of 2055 Ma reported from an area 50 km east of MacLeod Lake and published dates of about 2000 Ma for galenas from the Chibougamau Cu-Au ores, suggest a widespread thermal and mineralization event, in that part of the Superior Province east of James Bay, that differs from the common late Archean mineralization that is related to volcanism and metamorphic-intrusive activity.Sommaire - Les datations au K-Ar sur des biotites qui auraient cristallisé en même temps que la minéralisation disséminée en Cu et Mo dans une aplite mise en place au Lac MacLeod, au nord du Québec, s'échalonnent entre 2032 ± 44 Ma et '2f1:)1 ± 47 Ma. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Numerous Fe-Cu-Au-rare earth element (REE) deposits have been identified within the Palaeoproterozoic Dongchuan Group of the Kangdian region of SW China. Geochronologic and geochemical data of the dolerite dykes and other volcanic rocks reveal extensional activity occurred about 1.7 Ga called ‘Kunyang Rifting’. The Kangdian region underwent variable degrees of extension, meaning that breakup in the central part of this region occurred earlier than in the north. Research on microphysiography, isotopic geochemistry and inclusions of the Yinachang typical Fe-Cu-Au-REE deposits suggest that the dominant mineralisation fluid is high-temperature, high-salinity magma fluid, containing alkalic components, volatile phase and Cu-Au. Metasomatism and mixing between this magmatic fluid and carbonaceous wall rock and meteoric water caused the precipitation of Fe, REEs and Cu-Au. A chalcopyrite Re-Os age from the Yinachang deposit obtained during this study is some 50–100 million years younger than the timing of emplacement of the deeply sourced Haizi and Dongchuan dolerites. The Yinachang deposit is a typical iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG)-type deposit, and the presence of this and other deposits in the Kangdian region indicates that the region hosts an intraplate extension-related IOCG system within the western edge of the Yangtze Block, China.CITATION:Hou, L, Ding, J, Zhang, J R, Zhu, S B, Wu, S Y and Peng, H J, 2015. Autonomous robots are useful for 3D underground mine mapping to avoid human exposure to hazardous spaces. To prepare a precise mine map, a self-navigating robot must navigate an arduous path, avoiding obstacles and sensing the environment. A prototype laboratory-scale robot was built and evaluated through a mock-up in a test mine gallery. It was outfitted with a 2D laser scanner, a stereo camera for obstacle avoidance, and a high-precision, laser-based imaging and digitizing system for collecting 3D point cloud data. Various algorithms were used for scan matching to facilitate simultaneous localization of the robot for mapping.

The Tapping Camera Prototype (TCP) is an instrument being developed to record and analyse video of the molten metal stream entering a tapping crucible as it is tapped from an aluminium reduction cell. The development aims to provide potroom floor operators with continuous real time vision of the tapping process and provide an alert in the event of excessive bath contamination in the extracted metal stream. Longer term the system may provide sufficient data to enable control of the tapping process. The TCP mounts a wireless camera and periscope to view the molten metal stream via a peephole in the tapping crucible. Real time video is recorded to either digital video tape or computer disk for subsequent video analysis to quantify the bath material drawn into the tapping crucible with the molten aluminium. The images transmitted by the camera are available on a handheld LCD video screen. This work is an initiative of the CSIRO?s Light Metals Flagship.

A better understanding of the detonation performance of an explosive charge can be gained by directly measuring pressure, temperature and velocity of detonation (VOD). This is particularly important with commercial explosives because their performance is directly influenced by the degree of confinement given by the borehole diameter and the surrounding rock mass. A project funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) was initiated in early 2009 with the view to design and build cost effective prototype instrumentation to measure the relative differences in detonation pressures and temperatures of commercial mining explosives. The project’s primary focus was on low density explosives. Low density (also referred to as low shock) explosives have been available in various forms for nearly 20 years. Identifying the pressure release patterns of both conventional and low density explosives under different geotechnical conditions should provide the necessary information to both validate detonation codes and better define input parameters for breakage and fragmentation models. This paper gives a general description of the prototype instrumentation developed and reports on the results obtained to date in testing the proposed instrumentation in laboratory scale conditions.

Mining-induced seismicity is one of the adverse side effects of mining with the use of explosives at great depths. Disturbance of the primary stress state by the development of the network of excavations combined with the continuous generation of dynamic loads by the detonation of explosives in mining faces has a negative impact on the level of safety of crew and machines. To ensure the stability of excavations it is necessary to identify in detail the nature of the seismic hazard by means of continuous seismic measurements. Unfortunately, the technologies used so far are characterized by high costs of installation and further maintenance, which clearly limits the possibility of using a large number of stations in a small area. A breakthrough in this matter may be the technology of microelectromechanical systems, which is several times cheaper than standard solutions used in mining seismology. This technology, with the appropriate configuration of devices, can be successfully used to monitor dynamic phenomena generated by mining activities. As part of this study, the assumptions and configurations of a prototype 42-channel accelerometer network using MEMS technology have been presented. The network was installed in the Lubin underground copper mine in Poland in a seismically active area, where multi-face destress blasting are conducted regularly. As a result, 14 tri-axial accelerometers were installed in the immediate vicinity of the active mining front at a distance of about 1,000–4,000 ft (300–1,200 meters) from the closest faces. Highfrequency recordings are collected based on algorithms that trigger the system when the Peak Particle Acceleration set value is exceeded or on the basis of a manual external triggering device connected to the blasting machine. During the measurement period, several high-energy seismic tremors and several dozen of waveforms generated by blasting were recorded. The obtained results are the basis for assessing the effectiveness of the destressing measures and for the analysis of geomechanical risk based on periodic analysis of the velocity of seismic wave propagation

Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separators, for short, WHIMS are used for recovery of Iron ores with low magnetic susceptibility. A Jones patent WHIMS with "grooved plates" matrix is being used in Dry Tailing processing line in Hematite Recovery Plant at Golgohar mining & Industrial Co. for recovery of Hematite. In this kind of separators Matrices are used for increasing the Magnetic field intensity and providing high magnetic field gradient. The laboratory WHIMS in Golgohar Iron Ore and Steel research Institute is capable to provide a background magnetic field strength up to 0.85 Tesla and in presence of ‚expanded metal? matrix, magnetic field intensity could increase up to 0.9 Tesla. More than 50% of feed particles in this separator were finer than 36 micron and recovery of these particles needs more magnetic field intensity. Hence, ‚Grooved Plates? matrices with Js= 2 Tesla and 3.8 mm gap were constructed. Measurements indicated that magnetic field intensity around the matrix will increase to 1.25 Tesla. Graph of Magnetic field intensity around the matrix to background magnetic field intensity was plotted and a model with Rsquare= 0.9 was offered. In addition, magnetic field gradient and magnetic force were calculated. In WHIMS with feed top size of 150 micron, the main effective forces on separation process are the magnetic force and the hydrodynamic drag force. With assuming that the particles are smooth and spherical and the flow is laminar, Recovery of fine magnetic particles is problematic in this separator because of drag force. Considering these facts and mentioned model, finest particles that are recoverable in different magnetic field intensities were calculated. Computations illustrated that with magnetic field intensity more than 0.8 Tesla, particles as fine as 4 micron are theoretically separable but it should be noted that in practice a larger attractable particle size would be expected.

"Analytical and experimental work has shown that achieving the full inelastic lateral capacity of a pile may require the formation of a plastic hinge below ground level, in the pile shaft. The confining action of soil about the pile shaft was further been shown to greatly enhance the ductility capacity of the pile. An experimental program was therefore undertaken to build in the effect of external confinement through the addition of a GFRP jacket to the subgrade plastic hinge region. Two piles were thus modified, and compared to an unjacketed pile in a test rig which simulated a subgrade moment pattern and soil confinement. The ductility achieved by the jacketed piles was found to be substantially lower than an unjacketed control specimen. Failure mode of the jacketed specimens was also undesirable, involving complete tendon rupture and sudden loss in capacity IntroductionSeismic loading of concrete pile shafts can result in a demand for inelastic response. In the case of a superstructure supported by a single pile (i.e., a pile-column forming a single-column bridge pier, in which there is no rotational restraint at the top of the pile}, a plastic hinge will form below grade, at a depth which varies with soil properties and above-grade height of the center of seismic mass.In the case of a superstructure supported by multiple piles, there is rotational restraint, and the connection will experience inelastic action first. However, development of the full lateral inelastic capacity of the pile may call for the formation of a second, subgrade plastic hinge (fig. 1 )."

A major process control system is in some ways like a complex organism. The extremities, (that is, field instruments) are exposed to many hazards and suffer malfunctions of relatively minor and repetitive nature. Here I equate a stuck valve or dead transmitter with a skin abrasion or cut. The maintenance and repair of the extremities can be done by technicians with basic but thorough knowledge of relatively few problems and their solutions. Here I equate with administering Band-Aids and aspirin. On the other extreme, when the master control device (such as a computer) fails, one does not attempt home remedies. A "brain" specialist is called in. It is, however, crucial that the patient be able to clearly describe his symptoms. Getting down to the case at hand, a complex system consisting of field instruments, instrument racks, interface equipment, and perhaps a computer, may require maintenance at all levels. At the field equipment end where physical damage, corrosive atmospheres, reconfiguration, and routine calibration checks are common, the customer has the opportunity to develop a competent staff of maintenance people. The relatively high maintenance activity assures competence through repetition.

Extracting the desired mineral(s) from the deposit at sufficient profit margin, despite severe fluctuations in market price, requires process automation architecture capable of supporting an integrated enterprise solution. Such an architecture will encompasses the activities of individuals, process units, process areas, plant level activities, mine management and business planning and accounting systems. Key to the automation process is the aspect of value generation. This paper brings together the various requirements for the automation of a mining enterprise and presents the different aspects of how to obtain value across the entire mining operation.INTRODUCTIONMinerals’ processing sites are historically long lived, 20 year life of mine is not uncommon and 75 years is not unheard of. Considering that hardware technology advancements are introduced every six months, or less, it is prudent to select process automation systems that adhere to “open” industrial standards versus proprietary based systems. In the minerals processing industry, the key to survival is driving the cost of production per unit volume to the lowest possible level and provide enough profit to sustain operations. Control system architecture and Business information technology are rapidly becoming important tools in the quest for productivity. Getting key dynamic business performance information at the right time to the right person or process unit is crucial to successfully achieving corporate goals. The process automation architecture selected must therefore be able to integrate to the various networking enterprises and business systems.The mining industry is generally known as an “extractive” industry that is very physically-oriented with respect to operations and the activities in which workers engage. Large numbers of people performing manual tasks in difficult surroundings, produce very variable outputs. But, times are changing – and so are industry best practices. While the nature of work still consists of activities such as ore extraction, ore movement, ore concentration, refinement and logistics, automation innovations are starting to change the nature of many of the production steps. The industry has transitioned from requiring more physical activities by workers, to more information management, automated control and collaboration within the operation. Humans are good at situational intervention and non-linear reasoning and do best when empowered with an overall production perspective. Machines and automation are good at repetitive functions, steady state operation, and managing transitions. Thus, a combination of advanced technology solutions, reliable and useful information and full human contribution are necessary to mining operations for value generation."

By an order of the Executive Council of the Provincial Government dated January 18, 1979, a Royal Commission was established under the Public Inquiries Act to: 1) Examine the adequacy of existing Federal and Provincial requirements for the protection of the health and safety of workers associated with exploration, mining and milling of uranium in B.C. and for the protection of the environment and of the public. 2) Receive public input on these matters. 3) Make recommendations for setting and maintaining standards for worker and public safety and for the protection of the environment as a result of the exploration for the mining and milling of uranium ores. At that time,and at the present time in British Columbia, no uranium mines were, or are, in operation. Exploration at a number of sites was under way and one deposit, the Blizzard deposit, with estimated reserves of 1.92 million tonnes containing approximately 4.74 million kilograms of U308 was at an advanced stage of exploration. With our Terms of Reference, and because of the diverse geology of the western Cordillera which could potentially host a broad variety of uranium, deposit types, the Commission was faced with the task of considering environmental and health protection necessary for the potential development of [any] kind of uranium mineralogy situated in [any] of the environments found in British Columbia. Over the past 17 months since that time, much has transpired, culminating in the February 27, 1980 Provincial Government announcement of a seven year moratorium on exploration, mining and processing of uranium coupled with the termination of our Inquiry before completion of the hearings. The Government sebsequently modified its decision to terminate the Commission completely, deciding instead to stop the hearing but allow time for the Commission to gather in the work that had been initiated

Lunar construction faces unique challenges arising from the nature of regolith and megaregolith. Unlike terrestrial soils shaped by weathering, lunar regolith is composed of angular, poorly sorted particles produced by impacts, with bulk Density, strength, and trafficability varying sharply with depth and terrain. Boulder fields, floaters, and talus aprons add further complexity, disrupting excavation and mobility. Apollo missions documented these conditions through drive-tube samples, trenching, penetrometer data, trafficability tests, and seismic profiling, but the results remained as datasets rather than a unifying classification. This paper introduces the LRC (Lunar Regolith Classification) Framework and the Overconsolidation Ratio applied for the Moon (OCR*), the first contractor-ready system to organize Apollo-derived trends into excavation demand zones (L1–L5). LRC is explicitly a classification, not a stratigraphy: depth ranges are indicative and require in-situ verification before use. Each zone is defined by bulk density and strength ranges, field proxies (bootprints, trench stability, auger torque, seismic contrasts), and corresponding excavation implications. Worked examples from Apollo 15 (mare), Apollo 16 (highlands), and Apollo 17 (pyroclastics and talus) demonstrate how observed data translate into LRC zones. These cases show that LRC captures both systematic depth trends and sharp local heterogeneity. The framework standardizes excavation planning for landing pads, haul roads, berms, foundations, and tunneling trials, while converting floaters from hazards into resources. LRC thus provides a common language for lunar construction. Rooted in Apollo evidence but designed for Artemis verification, it is proposed as a living standard; a reference framework to guide site preparation, excavation, and risk management in the next phase of lunar development.

Safe, efficient production is a common objective for all large open pit mines. Despite comprehensive policies, procedures and regulations aimed at protecting workers, several people die each year in mining equipment-related collisions. The limited sightlines of heavy equipment operators coupled with difficult operating conditions are major contributing factors to the majority of mining equipment collisions. Off road haul trucks are the most common type of machinery involved in surface accidents. These vehicles represent the primary target for improving safety performance by mine operators. Although several commercial products have been introduced to address these issues, none have achieved significant market acceptance. The current collision avoidance solutions lack integration with onboard fleet management and equipment health systems. To achieve acceptance in industry, any collision avoidance system must offer high reliability, minimal false alarms, and value for money. With these criteria in mind, this paper will examine the pros and cons of the various technological approaches to collision avoidance in an open pit mining environment. The unique global positioning systems (GPS) and camera-based proximity detection solution on offer from Modular Mining Systems will be described. This solution uses intelligent filters to minimise false alarms. Tight integration with fleet management provides context information to enhance warnings and enable back-office near-miss analysis. Available today, this combination creates a practical solution to improve the situational awareness of heavy equipment operators, at a compelling price point. Future directions for maximising heavy equipment operator situational awareness will also be examined.

THIS is a metallurgical war. More than ever before, the mechanized forces and the air-borne warfare are deciding campaigns. Both of these are primarily dependent upon metals. There are two ways of increasing the effective supply of these metals when the demand is greater than the total over-all supply. The American custom, when a shortage of anything develops, is to get more. In the case of some nonferrous metals this has been done. For example, our potential peak output of magnesium will be almost one hundred times the prewar production. Output of aluminun has also been tremendously increased, and production of other metals is being stimulated by every possible means. Our enemies, however, have another successful method of increasing the effective supply of a material, and that is, to eliminate entirely all nonessential uses, and also to use, in essential applications, alternate materials wherever possible. Sometimes, ersatz material is inferior to the original, and consequently does not do the job as well. Often, however, it has been found superior, and many substitute items are now being used both by industry and by the military which will continue even when the original material again becomes available.
