An extractive process was developed applicable to submarginal titanium deposits containing valuable minor constituents; such as columbium (niobium) and iron. The process consisted of reducing the mineral concentrate with coke at high temperature to form a carbide-suboxide sinter, chlorination in the 400° -500° C. range, and fractional condensation of the chlorides. The chlorination procedure recovered 97, 83, and 87 percent of the titanium from brookite, rutile, and ilmenite sinters, respectively, while simultaneous columbium recoveries on the same materials were 85, 50, and 87 percent.

A preliminary examination of the Houston strip-coal mine, situated on the Alaska Railroad at milepost 175 (61 rail miles north of Anchorage, Alaska) and a review of all available information resulting from early coal exploration activities in the area resulted in plans to investigate the coal-bearing formations at depth by means of diamond core drilling to indicate the existence of additional reserves of coal in close proximity to railroad transportation, where it would be quickly available to meet rapidly expanding military and civilian fuel requirements. From the date of mobilization of equipment, August 28, 1951, until date of suspension, August 18, 1952, 2,010 feet of diamond drilling was completed. Ten definable coal beds were cut, of which 2 appear to be persistent and minable over an area of approximately 1/2 square mile. Within this area the 2 minable beds contain approximately 5,000,000 tons of coal in place. Of the remaining beds, at least two others may be minable to the eastward near their projected outcrops; however, these and deeper beds (at least in the vicinity of the drill holes) lie beneath a zone of pressurized gas and brackish water. From a practical standpoint, continued development and utilization of the coal in this vicinity will depend on the operators' ingenuity in developing cheap mining methods and on diligent prospecting for strippable coal under the comparatively light glacial cover.

The object of this report is to present certain pertinent data on the physical and chemical properties of South Arcot lignite and to present the results of several special tests to show how the raw lignite can be upgraded to superior fuels for certain special uses. The Bureau of Mines Branch of Coal Technology laboratories at Denver have advocated the drying and carbonization of all low-rank fuels for special uses and have introduced and developed new techniques for upgrading and refining noncoking coals. Application of these techniques to the South Arcot lignites was the object of the investigation, and this report presents significant data necessary for planning a fuel program based on utilization of dried and carbonized dusts. In general, the South Arcot lignite is similar in chemical properties to the high-moisture lignites found in the United States and has some physical properties similar to Australian brown coals. The samples submitted for test had lost moisture before delivery to the laboratory, and it has been necessary to estimate the analysis of the lignite in place in the mine. Various observations made in India by qualified technicians indicate that the bed moisture content of the entire seam is in the range of 54 to 56 percent. For estimating purposes in this report, the bed moisture content has been taken as 56 percent and the ash content of the fresh coal as 2.5 percent. A comprehensive production research program, now in progress at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Bartlesville, Okla., includes studies of the displacement of petroleum from sand by detergent solutions. An earlier report (12)2/ presented the results of an extensive research program to determine the value of detergents as floodwater additives. This report presents later results of the detergent-testing program (13, 17). Although water-flooding methods and controls are constantly being improved to increase the production of oil from secondary-recovery operations, considerable crude oil commonly remains.in place after a water flood has been terminated. Therefore, the possibility of improving the efficiency of a waterflood by the use of detergents is of increasing interest. The effects of many substances on the efficiency of water flooding have been investigated in laboratory studies (5, 11, 13, 17, 19, 24). Of the various sub-stances tested, only surface-active agents were consistently effective in removing oil from sand. Results of laboratory studies presented in earlier reports (9, 11, 12, 13) show that many detergent solutions effectively displace petroleum from sand surfaces under varying conditions encountered in centrifuging, manual and mechanical agitation, ultrasonic vibration, and imbibition.

"SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONThe test data indicate that water infusion of the Pittsburgh coal seam does not reduce the amount of fine dust produced during mining operations to the extent reported elsewhere. Wide variations in the amounts of dust collected in the air current were noted in duplicate samples and repetitive tests. Changes in depth and location of the infusion holes and amount of water injected and addition of a wetting agent to the water had little effect on the amount of dust liberated.Water was forced readily into the coal. Some water flowed out along the cleats, but an appreciable amount remained in the seam. Little or no water pene¬trated the coal seam above the upper infusion holes.The average dust concentration (with and without infusion) in the return air, 40 feet outby the working face, was 25 million particles per cubic foot during undercutting, 20 million during drilling, 75 million during shot firing, and 20 million during hand loading. At the working face the average concentration was 3 to 6 times higher. The concentrations were measured at an airflow of 1,600 cubic feet per minute (c.f.m.) at the face.On the basis of this short investigation, no final conclusions can be made on the effectiveness of water infusion in reducing the amount of fine dust liberated during mining in the Pittsburgh coal seam. However, the data indicate that dust reduction resulting from infusion would be small.INTRODUCTIONThe production of fine coal dust is an inherent part of nearly every phase of mining. The use of large, high-speed continuous-mining machines and other mechanical equipment has increased dust production. In addition, in coal seams that have been subjected to high pressures for a long period, and particularly in dry and friable seams, some very fine dust is in the seam before mining. Much effort has been devoted to allaying and collecting at its source the fine coal dust released during mining. One of the comparatively recent techniques that has been developed for this purpose is infusion of water or other liquids into the coal seam. This method consists of injecting water under pressure into a coal seam to neutralize the fine dust released during mining. The water generally is introduced through bore holes in the face before undercutting."

The widespread adoption during the past decade of the dense-medium process for cleaning coal increases the need for technologic studies of the process. Such studies provide information that will insure maximum usefulness of this process in its present form and may well lead to substantial improvements in design and opera¬tion. The Bureau of Mines has published the results of cleaning trials on a wide variety of coals in two dense-medium pilot plants5/ and reported the recovery of coal from waste by dense-medium treatment.6./ The present report deals with the viscosity of magnetite dense medium, an important subject about which virtually nothing has been published. Specifically, the report concerns methods for measuring viscosity, the influence of various medium contaminants on viscosity, the effect of viscosity on cleaning results, and the influence of viscosity on consumption of medium. Cleaning trials on four coals of varied density composition in a pilot plant, using mediums of different viscosities, showed a steady reduction in cleaning efficiency with increasing viscosity in every instance. However, the behavior of each coal in a viscous medium was distinctly individual. With one, an increase of only 1 centipoise in viscosity caused a reduction in recovery efficiency of 7.7 percent, whereas the same increase in viscosity with another reduced recovery efficiency only 2.7 percent.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop and improve mining methods for mining thin coal beds, to increase productivity, and to increase the recovery of coal. German coal planers and a modified longwall system of mining were introduced into American mines and are bringing about increased productivity and better recovery as compared with the conventional methods displaced. Since the first installation, 4 additional planers have been purchased by coal companies and over 1-1/2 mil¬lion tons of coal has been mined by them, using the modified longwall mining method. INTRODUCTION Except from 1932 to 1934, the growth of mechanical loading in underground bituminous-coal and lignite mines in the United States has increased steadily. The amount of coal loaded mechanically in underground mines has increased from 0.3 percent in 1923 to 79.6 percent of the total underground production in 1953.3/ The use of new and improved mining machines and auxiliary equipment, together with new techniques in mining methods, usually has resulted in increased productivity.

This report presents experimental data on crater formation in four rock types. From an analysis of these data a general theory of rock breakage by explosives is deduced. This theory accounts for most of the rock breakage and other phenomena that occur when a concentrated charge is detonated in a drill hole near a free surface. From instrumented crater tests and high-speed motion pictures of the explosions, various experimental checks on the deduced theory of rock breakage are made. The general mechanism of rock breakage by explosives as described in this report is outlined briefly below. The detonation of the explosive charge creates a high gas pressure in the charge hole, which in turn generates a compressive strain pulse in the surrounding rock. This compressive strain pulse travels outward in all directions from the charge hole. Near the charge hole the amplitude of this strain pulse is sufficient to cause crushing of the rock. However, as the strain pulse travels outward its amplitude decays rapidly until no further crushing of the rock is possible. The compressive strain pulse continues to travel outward until it is reflected by a free surface. Upon reflection the compressive strain pulse becomes a tensile strain pulse. As the strength of rock in tension is much less than in compression, the reflected tensile strain pulse is able to break the rock in tension, progressing from the free surface back toward the shot point. In other words, the rock is pulled apart, not pushed apart.

Results of the investigation were planned to be reported on a county basis and, from the data developed, to determine: I. Which coals either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation are chemically suitable under present standards for producing metallurgical coke. 2. Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced. 3. Which coals cannot be considered potential sources of metallurgical coke, regardless of preparation by present-day methods. This report is one in the county series that describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Bell County, Ky.

As part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report.2/ The suitability of coal for metallurgical use depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, as well as the available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests. The data obtained from this study cover test areas that are gassy to ultragassy and pillared areas of different sizes and degrees of tightness. The methods of controlling ventilation, applying bleeders, and supporting bleeder entries varied in the different test areas. It was not possible to study all conditions likely to be encountered in coal mines. Undoubtedly, there are areas where bleeder entries, even though properly planned and maintained, might prove unsatisfactory. However, on the basis of this study, the following observations were made: 1. Tests showed that each bleeder system studied provided some movement of air through the pillared area; the quantities of air delivered to the pillar line, ranged from 23 to 82 percent, depending mainly on the extent to which bleeder re-turns were used as main returns from the section. 2. Pressure measurements taken across pillared areas showed maximum pressure drops ranging from 0.05 inch of water for a shallow gob to 2.69 inches for a very deep gob. The pressure differentials varied with the size and tightness of the gob but proved adequate to induce airflow across worked-out areas or through fringes of the gob to the bleeder return system.

Two problems perplex many coal-mine operators and employees. Is coal-mine dust harmful to breathe; and, if so, is it possible to keep the concentration below the danger point? The medical profession is not unanimous in its opinion of the danger of breathing bituminous-coal dust, but there appears to be ample and increasing evidence that coal-mine dust can be harmful if breathed in large enough doses for long periods. The question of controlling the dust at the point of formation is still unanswered in the minds of many in the mining industry. However, results of limited studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines in 9 bituminous-coal mines indicate that a full-shift average exposure of workers should not exceed about 20 million dust particles per cubic foot of air (m.p.p.c.f.) and that concentrations can be held within this limit without too much difficulty. Furthermore, these studies indicated that an exposure in the neighborhood of 40 m.p.p.c.f. should not be exceeded for an individual operation and that it is possible to hold within this ceiling.

The sulfur shortage that existed during the Korean conflict stimulated interest in coal measures as possible sources of sulfur. One of the areas brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines was in Marion County, Iowa, where comparatively high-sulfur coals and other marcasite-bearing strata were known to occur. A Bureau of Mines engineer inspected the marcasite occurrence on December 4, 1954; this prompted further work on the Iowa coals and associated formations as a source of iron sulfides. An investigation of the Iowa high-sulfur coals was undertaken including core drilling, field reconnaissance, and compilation of data pertinent to consideration of the following: 1. Upgrading Iowa coal by mechanical cleaning and the feasibility of recovering sulfur from coal brasses. 2. Possibility of processing the high-sulfur coals by adaptation of methods employed in processing industrial gases to produce sulfur and sulfur products. 3. Possibility of finding concentrations of iron sulfides in associated rock formations in sufficient quantity for economical recovery.

Fire has been one of man's most useful tools through the ages and certainly is a "must" for industrial progress but when uncontrolled is one of the most destructive agencies. This fact is even more important in a coal mine, where many persons and much expensive equipment are confined in a relatively small area. Means of escape from a burning area, as well as from the products of combustion, are often limited; and in many instances the entire surroundings are combustible. Numerous mine fires, which resulted in a high death toll and great financial loss through the years, have caused mine owners to search for the best fire-fighting equipment; much of this has been installed, the quantity depending largely upon the experience of the individual companies or neighboring mines in certain coalfields. A mine owner or operator has meager published information on the actual fire protection afforded and systems of fire-fighting inaugurated in the coalfields, by which he could compare his efforts and get some idea of the adequacy of his own protection. To further general knowledge of the subject, it was decided to survey a representative number of mines in the field and show what has been accomplished. Representative mines were selected in various coal beds; some had similar tonnage, so comparison could be made if desired.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a procedure for removing excess iron from representative samples of bauxite ore from the Quapaw deposit of American Cyanamid Co., Saline County, Ark., in order to produce a beneficiated ore suitable for use in the alum industry, At the request of the sponsoring company, the samples were reduction-roasted at 800° C. and then magnetically separated. Although some rejection of iron was effected under these conditions, the general results were not satisfactory, A much more successful procedure, from the standpoints of both rejection of iron and recovery of alumina, consisted of a short (l5-minute), low-temperature (400° C.) oxidizing roast, followed by a 2-minute interval in a hydrogen atmosphere, then cooling to room temperature, and, finally, high-intensity magnetic separation to remove the iron.

Field-scale experiments were conducted at Gorgas, Ala., from 1951 to 1954. Three reaction paths were formed by electrolinking-carbonization, using electrode spacings of 150, 152, and 155 feet. The coal along these reaction paths was gasified, using air, oxygen, and steam separately or in various combinations. At the conclusion of operation, a drilling survey was conducted to determine the location and approximate area of the reaction zones. During the applications of the electrolinking-carbonization technique the maximum limitation on electrode spacing was not determined. Initial tests were conducted at 60-foot spacing. Successful path-preparation tests were made at 150-, 152-, and 155-foot spacings, and the indications were that much longer spacings were possible. The potential requirements appear to be constant, regardless of path length, while the gross power required probably will increase with path length. During the carbonization phase gas was produced that is similar in quality to coke-oven gas produced at low to intermediate temperatures.

While analyzing synthesis gas produced from coal, the Bureau of Mines found that conventional procedures for naphthalene determination were difficult and time consuming. The Bureau developed a rapid and sensitive turbidimetric procedure, which requires only simple instruments and hence can be used in plant-control laboratories. The gas is passed through a saturated aqueous solution of picric acid at 3° to 4° C. whose turbidity is then measured at room temperature. A dispersing agent is added to prevent coagulation of the suspension on warming. Only about 1 mg. (0.015 grain) of naphthalene need be absorbed, and precision and sensitivity are a few ten-thousandths of a grain, or a few hundredths of a grain per 100 cubic feet. The determination can be completed less than 10 minutes after absorption. INTRODUCTION One of the functions of the Branch of Coal Gasification, Bureau of Mines, Morgantown, W. Va., is to develop economical methods for manufacturing, from coal, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide for producing hydrogen, methane, and other gaseous fuels. This raw gas may contain many impurities, including naphthalene. This impurity is usually determined by first forming naphthalene picrate in a water solution of picric acid, separating the picrate, and titrating the unreacted picric acid or the picrate itself.

This compilation presents information obtained through investigation of manganese deposits and a reconnaissance of potential manganese-bearing areas of southwestern Oregon and Del Norte County, Calif., from October 1952 to September 1955. The report includes maps, assays, and preliminary examination data on 39 manganese deposits distributed throughout Curry, Coos, Douglas, Josephine, and Jackson Counties, Oreg., and 1 deposit in Del Norte County, Calif. On the basis of mineral content the deposits can be divided into three groups: 1 Manganese silicate deposits, manganese oxide deposits, and manganiferous iron de-posits. Generally the oxides occur along the coast in the Curry-Coos County area, the manganiferous iron deposits are in the Josephine-Douglas area, and the manganese silicates are found in both the Josephine-Douglas and Jackson County areas. The deposits are characteristically irregular in form and usually small. Most silicate and manganiferous iron deposits are in metasediments of Triassic (?) age; oxide deposits are in sediments varying in age from Jurassic to Eocene.

The discovery of porphyries in petroleum by Treibs (17-19) is one of the most significant achievements relating to the origin of petroleum. The presence of these remnants of chlorophyll and hematin in petroleum has immediate practical interest in several aspects of the petroleum industry. Because of their interfacial activities and film-forming tendencies, the metal-porphyrin complexes may be expected to affect the wettability of petroleum-reservoir rock surfaces and influence the flow of fluids in these reservoirs. Also, studies of the relationship of trace elements and porphyrins in petroleum may be expected to yield valuable information on source beds and petroleum migration. Finally, the extreme stability of several metal-porphyrin complexes complicates removal of these metals from some petroleum stocks where they exert deleterious effects on processing and utilization. Metal-porphyrin complexes are commonly associated with the asphaltic residues of crude oils in which they occur (8, 9, 15). However, investigations in this and another laboratory (15) show that small amounts of these complexes often remain in partly refined petroleum products, such as thermally cracked distillates and deasphalted stocks.
