"Equity Silver Mines Limited, Canada's largest silver mine, has designed, built and operated a leach plant to reduce the levels of antimony and arsenic in its silver-gold-copper flotation concentrate. The orebody contained deleterious antimony and arsenic minerals in such proportions that the economic long-term sales contracts necessary to obtain project financing could not be procured. Construction of the leach plant therefore allowed development of the mine to proceed. Although the plant took some time to reach design throughput and product specifications, due to the complex and unique nature of the operation, these goals were successfully met and surpassed. This paper describes the physical plant and/or process technology modifications made to mold the main processes-concentrate leaching and filtering, autoclaving and filtration of by-products, and crystallization of salt cake-into an effective, economic operation.IntroductionEquity Silver Mines Limited, a member of the Placer Development Group, owns and operates an open-pit silver mine and related facilities located 37 kilometres southeast of Houston in north-central British Columbia. Ernest Henry Mining commenced operations on its copper-gold project in August 1997, some two months ahead of schedule and ten per cent ($35 million) under budget. The mine is located in the highly prospective Mount Isa/Cloncurry mineral district in north-west Queensland, approximately 38 km north-east of Cloncurry. The developer and operator of the project is Ernest Henry Mining Pty Ltd (EHM), an incorporated joint venture between MIM Holdings Limited (51 per cent) and Savage Resources Limited (49 per cent). The deposit is located approximately 40 km north of Cloncurry in North West Queensland and lies beneath a featureless black soil plain with no significant creeks or gullies cutting across the site. Vegetation is sparse and consists essentially of Mitchell grass with occasional low shrubs and trees. Up to nine million tonnes of ore and over 43 million tonnes of waste will be extracted each year from an open pit operation to produce approximately 350 000 tonnes of concentrate when in full production.

HUDSON MAXIM, Brooklyn, N. Y.-Immediately after the creation of the Naval Consulting Board, Admiral Strauss, Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance of the Navy, told members of the Board that the most important problem for the scientists to solve was erosion in large guns. The Navy, for years, had been working on the problem with marked suceess, but there was much yet remaining to be accomplished. As Chairman of the Committee on Ordnance and Explosives of the Naval Consulting Board, I communicated with several experts in the manufacture of steel, principal among whom was Prof. Howe. He generously agreed to help in every way possible, and the work that he has done and the time that he has spent upon it can he appreciated only by reading his paper. Prof. Howe asked for some rings. from a, certain 14-in. gun which Admiral Strauss had mentioned in particular, and in which, he had informed us, at each shot the bore of the gun, was enlarged about 0.001 in.,' and that after a relatively small number of rounds it was considerably eroded. It has puzzled scientists for a long time to account for the peculiar erosive effect produced by the powder gases in a gun, arid: what Prof. Howe has done in his paper is worthy of Sherlock Holmes. He is a veritable Sherlock Holmes of science.

Since 1985, numerous constructional sulfide-sulfate deposits in the form of mounds, pinnacles, chimneys, and sheets have been located between 40°45' and 41°05'N latitude in Escanaba Trough, the sediment-covered axial valley of the Southern Gorda Ridge. Single-channel seismic data indicate that three volcanic edifices up to 6 km in width penetrate as much as 500 m of turbidites that fill the valley; pillow and sheet flow lavas are exposed on the sea floor where these volcanoes breach the sediment surface. Observations from deeply towed camera systems and submersibles show that the largest hydrothermal deposits occur along the step-faulted northern flank of the central volcanic edifice and on the peripheries of steep-sided, sediment-capped hills, approximately 1 km wide and 100 m high, that rise above the valley floor. The sulfide deposits are highly oxidized, eroded, and partly buried by unconsolidated sediment; aprons of sulfide talus extend downslope from the mounds. Two types of sulfide have been sampled by dredging and submersible. The predominant mound and chimney material is pyrrhotite-rich massive sulfide with low amounts of Zn, Pb, Cd, and Ag. Coarse-grained zones with high porosity mark the location of myriad fluid channelways. Thin crusts of barite associated with pyrrhotite-rich sulfide have Au contents up to 2 ppm. A novel hydrometallurgical process for Escondida copper concentrates has been developed by The Minerals Laboratory of BHP. The Escondida Process consists of concentrate leaching, solution purification, electrowinning and residue flotation. Part of the copper will be sold as high grade concentrate and part as high purity SX-EW copper. Contrary to previous efforts for the development of a hydrometallurgical process for copper concentrates, this patented process does not advocate the total dissolution of copper. It only aims for the copper that is readily soluble in a mildly oxidizing environment with an ammoniacal or acidic lixiviant. Both lixiviants were studied, but ammonia was preferred because of fast kinetics at ambient temperatures and pressures. By controlling the oxidation potential, the formation of sulfate ions and, consequently, of an ammonium sulfate byproduct, is precluded. These mild leaching conditions also prevent the dissolution of unwanted impurities and result in the production of ultra-high purity electrowon copper. Solution purification is carried out by solvent extraction with LIX-54. The very high loading capacity of this organic results in a compact SX circuit, consisting of two loading, one scrubbing, and one stripping stage. As the organic is selective for simple copper ions, the copper amine complex is broken down and free ammonia is regenerated and recycled for leaching. High purity copper cathodes are produced in a conventional sulfuric acid based electrowinning system. One scrubbing step is needed to separate the ammoniacal circuit from the acid circuit. Limiting copper dissolution to less than 50% also provides an opportunity to produce high grade concentrates by residue flotation. Copper recoveries in excess of 98% with precious metal values reporting to the final concentrate can readily be obtained. Complete breakdown of the copper mineral- pyrite middlings results in a final concentrate grade that can be even higher than the original feed material. The Escondida Process also provides an opportunity to accept lower grade copper concentrates producing improved copper recoveries in the mill and yet high quality concentrates for marketing. The Esperanza mine of the Copper Division of Duval Sulphur & Potash Co. is located in the Twin Buttes District, 32 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz. Records of mining activity in this vicinity date back to the 1850's. The New Year's Eve mine, which was last active briefly during the years of World War II, made the first actual penetration into what is now Duval's Esperanza property. Duval's exploration department became interested in the Esperanza in the fall of 1954. The first test hole was started on May 8, 1955. Two years of intensive exploration work together with metallurgical studies developed the basis for the decision to establish an operation.

The need for the more accurate measurement of blasting results has increased substantially with the proliferation of the types of explosives available to mining operations in South Africa. The primary object of blasting is the production of broken rock of a specific size distribution. A method for the measurement of size distribution, more popularly known as fragmentation, is being developed at Sishen Iron Ore Mine, and the object of this paper is to describe the method briefly and so encourage an exchange of views on reliable methods. Once the fragmentation of broken rock can be assessed reliably, meaningful conclusions can be drawn from blasting trials. It will then be possible for equipment productivity to be related to muckpile properties, with the accompanying advantages.

The presence of gold or tin in a particular place in payable quantities may be suspected from geological and prospE;cting reports. It behoves the engineer by judiciously spaced boreholes or pits to establish whether the place is exploitable with profit, and it is the purpose of this paper to set out the ways in which this is done. The various types of deposit to be considered occur in Malaya, Thafland and Borneo, in which countries the writer spent four years in estimating alluvials.The methods described were used in actual practice both by the writer and previous engineers for the same company. The subsequent exploitation of the alluvials evaluated by the methods given below shows that the recovery was as good as, and sometimes higher than, expected. No claims are made to the originality of the methods, but it is 'felt that they may be new to some engineers and< interesting to others contemplating alluvial testing.

Gas samples were taken from a wide range of target areas on dumps arising from coal mining activities. Some of the dumps had largely burned out, some were still burning, some were in the process of rehabilitation, and on others rehabilitation was essentially complete. It was found that rehabilitation was very effective in reducing emissions to tolerable levels. Even incomplete rehabilitation reduced the CO2 emissions to less than about 1 kg/m2/a, whereas some unrehabilitated areas showed emissions of over 100 kg/m2/a. Some areas where there was active combustion taking place were also sampled, and they showed as much as 7 000 kg/m2/a, but the areas concerned were very small and their total contribution accordingly low. Analyses were also made for SOx, NOx, NH3, and CH4, but these were generally (and unexpectedly) at very low levels. The mines sampled represented 53 per cent of all surface coal mining activity. Accordingly the estimated total emissions were scaled up, to arrive at estimates of 1950 000 ± 350 000 t/a C02, 2040 ± 580 t/a SOx, 306 ± 85t/a NOx, and 31 ± 9 t/a NH3 for all surface mines. Methane was detected only from burning coal, and due to the difficulty in sampling, no reliable estimate could be made of these methane emissions.

Roof and rib falls are the basic ground control hazards associated with underground roadways during development, stand up and, if applicable, retreat. Falls of ground can happen following the deterioration of supports or rock conditions over time, and particularly as a consequence of continuing rock deformation and/ or failure to install adequate support. Once developed, the risk of a failure is increased due to the effects of time as well as to front abutment stresses through retreat mining. The measurement of strata displacement using monitoring equipment is a form of ground control risk assessment. These monitoring systems are active, or ?live?, in a sense that risk is assessed real-time. However, there are circumstances in which falls of ground can occur without the prior recording of excessive movement. In addition, monitoring equipment is typically placed at set intervals, and strata conditions could vary between these points. Consequently, a visual assessment of other factors contributing to the risk of a fall should be made in order to complete a ground control risk assessment. Such surveys are usually one-off, thus capturing roadway conditions at one particular point in time. Ongoing deterioration is not documented through such one-time surveys, and there is a requirement for real-time or live assessment where a system is in place so that observation data can be updated on an ongoing basis, and a useful summary of prevailing roadway states produced on demand. To address the shortfalls of one-time assessments, a ?live? computerbased quantitative ground control risk assessment process has been developed. It combines visual observations processed in a quantitative manner with existing monitoring data into an interpretable output which indicates zones of roadway where there is an increased risk of a fall of ground from the roof or sides, so that remedial action can be carried out to mitigate that risk. Through improved procedures, it is now possible to generate a ground control risk assessment for each roadway, and one which can be updated frequently. This paper aims to outline and describe the assessment process.

The conclusions reached in this paper may be summarized briefly as follows: (1) The method of estimating moisture in coal by determining the loss in weight of a sample heated to 105°-110° Cent, in an air-bath for an hour is untrustworthy, the results so obtained being too low. (2) Dried coal has a very considerable power of absorbing moisture, and a sample, after being dried, must be protected instantly if it is to remain free from moisture. (3) A fairly accurate estimation may be made by heating the coal in a current of dry air at 105° to 110° Cent., and collecting the moisture evolved. (4) In cases in which it is proposed to use the dried coal for any further experiments, the drying must be done in the absence of oxygen, and this can be done simply and quickly by the vacuum method now described

JOHNSON, Pittsburgh, Pa.-I hope that this contribution of Mr. Washburne's is only the first of a series dealing more in detail with the very important problems involved. Pores are of two kinds: Those which are entirely inclosed, so that they do not belong to a system of communicating pores tapped by the bore hole or shot hole; second, those which do so communicate. Porosity, of course, includes both. But since pores of the first class are valueless to us, we should confine our attention to the latter, for which I propose the term "effective porosity." This should be measured by the Wisconsin method, based on the quantity of fluid that can be introduced by the aid of vacuum. Another factor which requires attention in this connection is the dependence of the extractability upon the rate of loss of pressure, as affected by the number of holes, and the rapidity of their completion, the existence of uncontrolled wells, the use by other operators of vacuum pumps upon the casing head, the exhaustion of a gas field in the same reservoir prior to the discovery of the oil, etc. The extractability depends upon the pressure available for the exclusion of the oil from the reservoir into the hole. The action of gravity in bringing oil into the hole is relatively small where the pores are very small, as is so frequently the case.

INTRODUCTION SOONER or later in the development of any natural resource it becomes highly desirable to know the quantity of this resource in the country as a whole, as well as of the part that is being developed, for the general course and. conduct of the development work must be governed to some extent by the total supply available. An accurate estimate of the quantity of any natural resource is difficult to make; yet if one is diligent enough one can obtain a pretty accurate idea of the quantity of marketable timber, the acreage of tillable land, or the horsepower that may be developed from the streams, for these are things that may be measured. But any attempt to estimate the quantity of some mineral in the ground appears to enter the realm of imagination and it seems that the estimate can be nothing more than a blind guess. It may appear to be especially futile to attempt to determine the quantity of oil and gas that is available in the ground, for these minerals are so vagrant that even if the quantity now available should be known quite exactly, the quantity that will eventually be obtained may be much less, for certain losses in the extraction of both oil and gas are unavoidable, and just what these losses will be cannot be predicted. Though necessarily inaccurate, estimates of such mineral reserves are, however, of distinct value, for they summarize the existing knowledge of the deposits of the mineral and thus enable those who are interested in some industry that depends in one way or another on this mineral to formulate a rational commercial policy. Some time ago, when the price of gasoline suddenly rose in a rather spectacular manner, the writer was one of the U. S. The use of machine vision in the monitoring and control of metallurgical plants has become a very attractive option in the last decade, especially since computing power has increased drastically in the last few years. The use of cameras as a non-intrusive measurement mechanism not only holds the promise of uncomplicated sampling but could provide more consistent monitoring, as well as assistance in decision making and operator and metallurgist training. Although the very first applications of machine vision were in the platinum industry, no automated process control has been developed for platinum group metals (PGMs) as yet. One of the reasons is that to date froth features could not be related to key performance indicators, such as froth grade and recovery. A series of laboratory experiments was conducted on a laboratory-scale platinum froth flotation cell in an effort to determine the relationship between the platinum grade and a combined set of image features and process conditions. A fractional factorial design of experiments was conducted, investigating 6 process conditions, namely air flow rate (x1), pulp level (x2), collector dosage (x3), activator dosage (x4), frother dosage (x5) and depressant dosage(x6), each at levels. Videos were recorded and analysed to extract 20 texture features from each image. By using artificial neural networks (ANN), the nonlinear relationship between the image variables and process conditions and the froth flotation grades could be established. Positive results indicate that the addition of image features to process conditions could be used as sufficient input into advanced model based control systems for flotation plants. This paper firstly examines the pollu- tion potential of burning colliery wastes. A comparison of two means of estimating the pro- pensity for coal to combust spontaneously is next presented. The use of microwaves, as a new procedure, is discussed in detail, while a comparison of the results is made with a modi- fied adiabatic technique. A number of coals that are known to combust spontaneously was tested, as were some coals that are not consi- dered to have self heating potential.

"Two studies were carried out to estimate the thermal resistance of various interfaces using experimental and computational techniques. Three types of interfaces were examined. The first study investigated metal-mold interfaces, and the second study focused on metal-metal and metal-oxide interfaces.For the metal-mold interface, the air gap size was measured and subsequently correlated with the interface thermal resistance. The procedural details are outlined for the development of a correlation which predicts thermal resistance as a function of air gap size.Investigation of the metal-metal and metal-oxide interfaces employed data from a series of experiments as input into a model, which solved the inverse heat conduction problem in terms of a resistance estimate. These experiments, involved dipping a cold cylindrical metal into a liquid metal or liquid oxide, respectively. Under these conditions, a shell freezes around the cylindrical addition and a thermal resistance develops during the time period which shell exists . The Heat Transfer Coefficient (HTC) at the addition shell interface differs significantly among the various types of metals and oxides used. In the case of an oxide shell, the (HTC) is about an order of magnitude lower than the (HTC) of the metal shell.INTRODUCTIONIn many metals processing operations there is a need to estimate the thermal resistance at metal-metal, metal-oxide, metal-mold interfaces. This need was further intensified with the recent proliferation of mathematical models, which predict various transport phenomena events. There are many factors which can influence the magnitude of the interfacial thermal resistance. Some of the factors, among others, are as follows: contact temperature, metal thermal conductivity, apparent contact pressure, surface roughness, interstitial gas conductivity, and interstitial gas pressure.In this paper, two studies are reported on the estimation of thermal resistance. The first involves, the development of heat transfer coefficient-air gap relationships at the metal-mold interfaces. The second includes, estimations of thermal resistance at the addition-shell interface. The former case is encountered in the metals solidification and the latter during the melting and/or dissolution of additions to liquid metals or slags."

It is shown that a differential colorimetric technique can be used as a routine method for the estimation of titanium in beach sands, and their ore dressing products. The method will tolerate the presence of most of the other elements usually found in beach sands. The accuracy is shown to be within the limits of ±0ò31 per cent for concentrates containing more than 95 per cent titanium dioxide and ±1 per cent for tailings containing 0ò2 per cent titanium dioxide. The method is described for use with a Hilger "Spekker" absorptiometer.

"The importers and manufacturers who import or produce products with packaging containers are charged a recycling fee in Taiwan. The amount of waste packaging containers used for calculating the recycling charge is based upon the amount declared by importers and manufacturers which might be underestimated. This study aims to estimate the amount of waste packaging containers generated by households in Taiwan and also explores its distribution. The sampling survey and ratio estimation are conducted for estimating the recycled amount; while the refuse sampling method for municipal solid waste composition is employed to estimate the un-recycled waste packaging containers. The estimated total amount of waste packaging containers in 2011 generated by households in Taiwan is 696,511 m.t., of which, 79.49% of the waste packaging containers were recycled and 20.51 % were landfilled or incinerated. This study shows that the amount of waste packaging containers declared by importers and producers is underestimated around 20%.IntroductionWaste packaging containers including iron cans, aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic containers, paper containers, aluminum foiled paper packs are officially announced to be recycled in Taiwan. In order to create the economic incentive for raising recycling performance, associated manufacturers and importers are charged a recycling fee to subsidize recyclers. The amount of packaging containers declared by importers and manufacturers is used for calculating the recycling charge and recycling rate. The importers and manufacturers might underreport their producing (importing) amount to pay less recycling fees. Therefore, the estimated waste packaging containers based upon the amount declared by importers and manufacturers is usually underestimated. Related previous studies about waste packaging containers recycling in Taiwan are done by Hsu and co-workers [1-4]. Hsu and Kuo [1] estimated total production values of recycling and evaluated the performance of recycling performance based upon the estimated production values. Hsu and Liu [5] provided a cost analysis of recycling for waste packaging containers in Taiwan. Bor, Chien, and Hsu [2] presented a market-incentive recycling system for waste packaging containers in Taiwan. Hsu and Kuo [4] provided an amending mechanism for product charge and recycling subsidy in response to the social economic changes for waste packaging containers recycling. Lee and Hsu [ 6, 7] explored the distribution, fee rates, and collection rate of waste containers. This study aims to estimate the amount of waste packaging containers generated by households in Taiwan and also explore its distribution."

The Joint Committee of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) and the Australian Mining Industry Council (AMIC) have published a Code for the Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves. The Code is the result of an initiative begun in 1971 to achieve industry self regulation of Resources and Ore Reserves reporting which resulted first in guidelines for reporting standards but which have now been incorporated in ASX Listing Rules as a Code with significant sanctions ensuring compliance. This paper describes the background to the Code, its key provisions, and comments on practical aspects of working with the Code and compliance issues.
