As sphalerite is such a common constituent of many types of ore, the present investigation was undertaken to determine what its relations are to the other minerals in the deposits, and also whether these are of any genetic significance. The data presented herewith were obtained from a mineralographic study of about 200 ore specimens from some 43 different localities, represented by suites of specimens in the Cornell University collection. OVERPOLED copper, as commonly defined, is copper which has been excessively reduced during the poling period of the refining process. Owing to its porosity, such copper is unfit for commercial purposes. The cause of this phenomenon is undoubtedly the lack of oxides in the copper, yet this does not completely explain it. Refined copper of the same "pitch" and "set" varies considerably in oxygen contents, and analyses of overpoled bars also show similar wide differences; moreover, it is possible to melt copper in crucibles so as to obtain bars that are practically free from oxygen although they show a "tough pitch" and "level set" surface. Frederick Johnson advances the following theory: The regulation of the quantity of oxygen in copper is the keynote of all copper refining. It is the presence of a Well defined proportion of oxygen in the form of cuprous oxide, forming a copper-cuprous oxide eutectic, Which enables copper to be cast free from blowholes. It seems that When oxygen is present, other gases are less soluble in molten copper; When oxygen is absent, or is present in insufficient quantity, the copper dissolves other gases, such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide, Which are insoluble in the copper when solid, and, being rejected during the process of solidification, causes internal porosity and external ridges and excrescences.1 The "level set" of Wire bars, etc., is entirely the result of a compromise between the occluded gases and cuprous oxide. With excess of the former the metal would be "overpitch" and spongy, While an excess of the latter would result in the metal being "underpitch" and brittle.2 The result of the absorption and subsequent expulsion of reducing gases, carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and the effect of this action. on the overpoling of copper are in dispute; the literature on the subject is full of contradictory statements and will continue to be so until better analytical methods have been developed. Sulphur, however, is tangible. The refiner can see it in his button sample and consequently attributes to it any trouble that may happen during the melting of the copper.

The key objective of forming a cartel is to increase profits to members of the cartel by taking the following action: a) control output; and b) control price. However, while attempting to obtain monopoly profits the cartel members have to contend with costs associated with cartelization and such costs include the following: political costs; the cost of coordinating output and price; organizational costs (such as cheating); and administrative costs (such as the cost of attending cartel meetings). The objective of commodity exchanges is to provide an open, free market where buyers and sellers may openly complete transactions and pricing information can be immediately disseminated. These transactions include the following: a) to provide facilities for "hedging", or transferring price risk from buyers and sellers of physical commodities to "speculators" through the medium of buying and selling futures contracts, and b) taking physical delivery of metal on due dates.

"Recent developments in image analysis techniques and the power of computer hardware have spurred international interest in the potential uses of image analysis techniques in a range of industrial applications. One of these applications is the control of the complex flotation process. Despite years of work, the flotation process is still poorly understood. Current attempts to control flotation cells focus on consistently duplicating the control achieved by human operators.In human control of flotation two of the dominant visual cues are the froth flow speed and the froth stability. These two factors can be measured and inferred respectively from image analysis of video of the froth surface. Two important hydrodynamic variables for control of the flotation process are the air addition rate and the level of the froth pulp interface.The current work focuses on the relationship between froth flow speed and the rate of recovery of concentrate from a flotation cell. Results are presented that show a strong relationship between flow speed and concentrate yield. These results include tests where the conditions in the cell were not changed, as well as tests involving changes to the cell level and air addition rate. Preliminary results are presented which show a correlation between froth stability and froth percent solids.Future developments of the system will include comprehensive froth texture typing, colour space and stability analyses."

"The rapid developments in computer vision and computational resources are creating new possibilities for the use of machine vision systems for industrial control. A number of commercial image analysis systems exist, and research into improved measurements of froth performance is ongoing. An integral part of the implementation of these systems is the validation of the relationship between image analysis measurements and flotation cell performance. This paper discusses the factors affecting concentrate flow and presents the results obtained from one such system with respect to its ability to estimate the flow of concentrate from a flotation cell.The relationship between froth flow speed and the rate of recovery of concentrate from a flotation cell was investigated on two industrial operations, both processing PGM (Platinum Group Metal) bearing ores. Results are presented that show a relationship between froth flow speed and concentrate yield."

"Understanding the effect of particle shape on dry rheology is considered to be an important aspect in order to replace natural sand used in concrete with manufactured sand. Crushed particles from solid rock are normally less rounded and have less equally shaped dimensions compared to natural sand. Thus, the flowability and workability of the concrete will be different. In previous research, it has been demonstrated how different crushing techniques affects the shape of the particles. In many cases it is believed that Vertical Shaft Impact (VSI) technology is a way forward to replace natural sand. To be able to study the effect of VSI at the smaller fractions (63-2000 µm) sufficient measurements methods to determine particle shape are required. Optical tools to analyze the aggregates would make it possible to study a large amount of particles at small fractions. The determination of particle shape of aggregates is challenging since the shape is highly irregular and the size span of particles are very large. This study aim to evaluate one of the available optical tools, the Camsizer, for digital imaging determination of shape and size distribution. The available default shape parameters of the Camsizer are studied to understand the meaning of the parameters and their suitability for determining the quality of manufactured sand. To evaluate the capacity to determine particle shape, tests are made with 35 different materials. The results are compared with the dry rheology measured with the standardized "flow cone" test. Dependence has been previously proven between particle shape and the mass flow rate in the cone. Three different shape parameters, aspect ratio, sphericity and symmetry, are studied with the Camsizer and the results are compared with the mass flow rates in the cone. The results indicate a strong linear relationship between the optical parameters and the flow cone test."

"Based on the principle of carbon balance, a model was built to calculate C02 emissions of each process and correspondingly the total course of production in iron and steel making. The data from a typical integrated steelworks in China was applied in the model. The results show that the BF and coking process account for the most emissions. Generally, C02 emissions in integrated steelworks depend on three factors, resources utilization efficiency, energy utilization efficiency and energy consumption structure, which were considered in an equation in this paper. Especially, General Emission Factor (GEF) was proposed to assess the relationship between C02 emissions and energy consumption. The results show that, higher GEF will result in more C02 emissions with the same energy consumption and in iron and steel making, the optimization of energy structure and development of eco-industrial park both have significant benefit on the carbon reduction.IntroductionThe Global Warming resulting from the increase of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs), especially C02, in the atmosphere has become the main reason of global climate change, and the carbon reduction is one of the most important ways for the sustainable development [1]. The iron and steel making is a manufacturing industry based on iron-coal high temperature chemical process, in which plenty of C02 is emitted. According to the data from IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) in 2001, iron and steel making emitted about 650 million tons ofC02 every year, which is the fourth largest industry of the fossil energy consumption [2]. According to the data from EEA (European Enviromnent Agency) in 2006, iron and steel making is the largest source ofC02 emissions, which accounted for about 18% of the total C02 emissions in European manufacturing industry [3].It is estimated that the application of various well developed energy-saving technology, such as Coke Dry Quenching (CDQ), Top Pressure Recovery Turbine (TRT) and Coal Moisture Control (CMC), can make the C02 emissions reduced by 0.5%-3% in iron and steel making, and the further C02 emissions reduction can be achieved if more new energy saving technology is applied, such as sintering plant heat recovery, electricity generation with steam generated from converter and the various by-products gas and the hydrogen making process from COG[4,5]. In addition, the application of membrane separation technology is well expected in iron and steel making [6]. For example, the application of C02 Capture and Storage (CCS) in blast furnace combined with the Pure Oxygen Top Gas Recycled BF (TGRBF) technology can reduce the C02 ennss10ns greatly by about 50%-60% [4].That is, as a kind of C02 end-treatment technology, CCS applied with other technology of C02 recovery would be more meaningful. Actually, reduction of the C02 emissions by changing the structure of energy consumption and raw materials with new process of iron and steel making, such as direct reduction process or smelting reduction process [4,7,8], is the trend of ferrous metallurgical engineering, which is regarded as a kind of source-treatment technology. In this sense, source-treatment technology is more pivotal for the solution of carbon reduction in the future than the current popular energy saving technology. Hence, it is necessary to build the C02 emissions model based on the iron and steel making process and evaluate the relationship between the energy saving and C02 emission reduction."

"Industrial flotation is a continuous and often multistage process, where particles of a given mineral species (usually the targeted one), present in different sizes, encounter a large amount of gas bubbles (normally air) to produce mineral–bubble aggregates, which are removed from the flotation device (cell or column) as a valuable product (concentrate). The bubble content inside the cell is characterized by the prevailing hydrodynamic conditions (known as gas dispersion variables), which in turn are known to influence the flotation performance. Although most researchers and practitioners agree that the relationship between the hydrodynamic variables and flotation performance exists, the lack of an adequate method foronline measuring the average bubble diameter has prevented such studies.The aim of this study is to apply appropriate hydrodynamic variables for flotation kinetic modeling (as a key feature of flotation performance) for a given introduced particle size distribution (PSD). In this regard, experiments were conducted in a laboratory flotation column (5.6 cm internal diameter for a total height of 650 cm), and mixtures of quartz (hydrophilic gangue) and talc (naturally hydrophobic mineral), classified in four different size fractions. The correlation between the flotation rate constant and given hydrodynamic variables were analyzed. Results suggest that the relative importance of hydrodynamic variables for flotation rate modeling depends on the PSD. Finally the suggested hydrodynamic variables for each of the various particle size-classes considered were used to produce single variable models for the flotation rate constant. INTRODUCTIONIndependently of the prevailing flotation conditions, the mechanisms for bubble-particle aggregation and the residence time of the phases inside the device must also be considered. In this regard, one of the most used approaches to represent the overall flotation process is as a pseudo-chemical reaction between a particle and a bubble, whose rate (at a given time) is proportional to the amount of remaining floatable species. The proportionating constant is called the kinetic constant or the flotation rate constant."

The Hamersley Group in the Pilbara, Western Australia, consist of interlayered banded iron formation (BIF) and shale host rock formations within which a large number of open pit iron ore mines have been established. The slope stability of most of the mining excavations developed within these formations is controlled by the relatively low shear strength of the shale groups and shale bands, which are the weakest rock types. Shale formations range from fresh to highly weathered and are generally highly fissile when fresh, and clayey when weathered. An accurate understanding of the shear strength of these materials across the entire weathering continuum is therefore a key importance for assessing the slope stability of these mines.Historically defect laboratory testing results for the Pilbara mines have been analysed mechanically using direct shear testing (DST) to measure a number of geotechnical characteristics of the rock bedding and defects. This paper sets out the current practice in the industry in terms of the laboratory testing and presents a possible application of hyperspectral data to empirically correlate the shear strength of shale bedding with the relative mineralogy abundance on the bedding surface. This was achieved by creating both hyperspectral and geotechnical data sets for the same samples.In the study the shale samples were separated into three distinct assemblages: iron oxide + kaolinite, iron oxide + white mica + kaolinite, white mica + kaolinite, which had 40, nine and two samples respectively. Analysing these assemblages alongside DST data showed that samples with white mica had reduced non-variable shear strength, whereas samples with iron oxide + kaolinite had an overall higher shear strength but with a greater variance. It is inferred that the reduced shear strength in the white mica samples is due to the sheet (or plate) like structure of the mineral, giving it a weak stress plane. Confidence in the trends observed can be reinforced by expanding the data set in future works. The investigation also includes a discussion on weathering grade and addresses the question as to whether mineralogy abundances influence these characteristics in Hamersley shales.CITATION:Maldonado, A, Mercer, K G and Robert, A, 2017. This paper examines the statistical relationship between quality of life indicators and the gross value of mineral production from Australian regions. We used quality of life indicators, aggregated for 673 local government areas, of household income, housing affordability, access to communication services, educational attainment, life expectancy and unemployment. We find no evidence of systematic negative associations between quality of life and the gross value of minerals production. Instead, mining activity has a positive impact on incomes, housing affordability and communication access across regional and remote Australia. Whilst we do not establish causality between mining activity and quality of life, our analysis prompts a rethink of the æresource curseÆ as it applies within a single country. Nevertheless, our findings are tempered by extensive anecdotal and empirical evidence of the negative social impacts of mining on specific demographic sectors, localities, families of fly-in, fly-out mining operations and individuals. This contrast may be a scale issue, with the regional benefits of mineral wealth masking highly-localised inequalities and disadvantage. We suggest that there is a need to better understand these impacts and, more importantly, the types of policy mechanisms government and industry can adopt to mitigate or avoid them.

Geologically, as distinct from economically, "porphyry copper (molybdenum, gold, silver, etc.) deposits" might be defined as large, disseminated and/or stock-work occurrences of copper-minerals, generally averaging less than 1 per cent cop-per. They are normally associated with small plutons which range in composition from granite to diorite, although, typically, they consist of quartz monzonite or granodiorite. Circumstantial evidence indicates that these "minor" granitic intrusions may represent the intrusive phases of post-orogenic, calc-alkaline volcanism, this conclusion being suggested by: 1. Texture and grain size. 2. Prevalence of intrusive breccias. 3. Relationship to unconformities and estimated depth of emplacement. 4. Spatial distribution in relation to orogenic zones. 5. The requirements of metals by modern society have created big challenges for mining engineers minerals processing engineers, metallurgical engineers and economists to produce these metals economically from mineral deposits which contain, with time, less and less value. The advances of science and technology allow, today, the exploitation of mineral deposits which only few years ago would not have been considered economical. However, there are limitations both on the minimum grade of recoverable values contained in the ore to be fed to a mill or on the concentrate to be smelted, and on the maximum content of "impurities" i.e. chemical elements which are difficult or expensive to refine from the ore, from the concentrate or from the metal. It is also known that the cost of treatment in a mill or in a smelter, for unit of metal contained in the ore or in the concentrate, increases as the grade of the recoverable values contained in them decreases and also if the content of impurities increases. Silicic volcanic ash and its alteration product, bentonite (montmorillonite and cristobalite), occur widely within sedimentary phosphate deposits. The genetic link, if any, between volcanism and phosphate deposition has yet to be satisfactorily established The phosphatic member of the Santa Margarita Formation (upper Miocene) in northwestern Ventura County, California, consists of approximately 15 per cent volcanic ash and bentonite. Ash and bentonite units greater than one foot thick can be subdivided into a lower zone of airfall origin and an upper zone of mixed ash and terrigenous detritus washed in from surrounding land areas. This upper zone also contains up to 20 percent phosphate pellets. These thick volcaniclastic units are typically overlain sharply by thin beds (less than 6 inches thick) of relatively pure, silica-cemented pelletal phosphorite. The shelf basin in which the phosphatic sediments accumulated was characterized by quiet, reducing but not euxenic bottom waters; Abundant decaying organic debris, mainly diatoms, served as a reservoir of readily available phosphate. The sudden influx of a large volume of silicic volcanic ash into this basin and its subsequent alteration to montmorillonite had two profound effects on thechemistry of the interstitial and bottom waters: (1) during alteration magnesium was removed from these waters and incorporated into the montmorillonite lattice, and (2) the pH of these waters increased as alteration progressed Both of these effects led to the crystallization in the bottom waters of carbonate fluorapatite. This accumulated as thin phosphorite beds immediately above the volcaniclastic units.

Slake durability of rocks is an important property of rock-mass and rock-materials in geotechnical practice. The slake durability of rocks is closely related to their mechanical properties. In this paper, mechanical properties and slake durability tests for weak and clay-bearing rocks from Beypazari Trona Bed in Ankara, were performed in order to assess the slake durability and mechanical properties (especially rock strength) of these rocks as well as to understand the relationship between mechanical properties and slake durability. In performing this relationship, statistical based correlation has been applied.

This paper reports hardness and abrasive wear resistance test results from a wide range of WC-Co alloys, varying in cobalt content as well as WC grain size. The results show that the abrasive wear resistance increases with increasing hardness and that the rate of increase is higher for larger WC grain sizes. The increase in abrasive wear resistance was found to be parabolic up to a critical hardness value and exponential above that value. The transition from parabolic to exponential behaviour was found to occur at the same contiguity value for all grain sizes, which suggests that at that contiguity value the WC skeleton becomes continuous in all WC-Co alloys.

The inter-relationship between these parties and the effect on the outcome of the project is often grossly underestimated. There are numerous success stories where the parties have worked as complementary teams aiming at the best outcome for the client company and achieving significant success. While there are a good number of occurrences where either the roles of the parties were unclear or perceived to be different from what others in the team believed or required them to be and the results were less than desired. This usually resulted in ongoing conflict, incorrect focus, working to different agendas and the result being a less than optimum result to Client Company. Mining, by its very nature of exploring where you cannot see, be it a shaft being sunk, tunnel being developed or other excavation that needs to be made, requires a very special working relationship between the parties. To understand this, and it applies equally well to mine and plant construction and other multiple function projects, one needs to start by describing the relationship of the parties. Often people believe that because they manage ongoing complex operations and large numbers of people that they can manage projects and as such the participants will ?fall into line.? At the outset it needs to be stressed that ?Project Management? is a specific type of management and needs to be understood as such. There are enough Colleges and Universities that teach project management, not only as a subject but also as a Master Degree. As you start up your project the relationship you establish between the client, project team (C.P.T) and the Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Management team (EPCM) will largely determine how successful your project will be. It is essential that from the outset a spirit of co-operation, support and respect be nurtured, and that it be actively carried through the project life cycle. There are several methods to facilitate this including team building exercises right at the start. This time and money will be well spent and recouped many times over during the project life cycle.

On the first of October 1991 two significant pieces of legislation came into force. Both of these are relevant to the allocation and use of minerals in New Zealand . They are the Crown Minerals Act 1991 and the Resource Management Act 1991.   The full legal implications of these is not fully known because the Planning Tribunal and the superior courts have not as yet had to deal with them in any detail. However, the thrust of the legislation is clear and it is appropriate to give an overview of how the statutes will operate in tandem if you are seeking to pursue or oppose any prospect, exploration or mining of Crown Minerals in New Zealand.

The dimensions and shape of both airborne and bulk amphibole-asbestos fibers are different from those of cleavage fragments of the amphiboles. These differences are related to the mineralogical properties unique to the habit of asbestos. These properties include the fibrillar structure, small fibrill widths and distinctive crystallographic faces of fibrills. Criteria for distinguishing amphibole cleavage fragments from amphibole-asbestos include mineralogical proper-ties observable in bulk samples and the dimensions of particles collected on air filters.

"Over the past twenty years, there have been numerous studies which have attempted to correlate the prevalence of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) with different characteristics of the coal seam. Some investigators have tried to find a relationship, or the lack of a relationship, between the rank of coal seams and the incidence of CWP. Others have attempted to show that there is a positive correlation between the mean mass of respirable dust in the mine atmosphere and the prevalence of CWP. Still others have tried to determine the influence of the quartz content of respirable dust on the incidence of CWP. Unfortunately, many of these different investigations have conflicting conclusions.One area of research with conflicting conclusions deals with the relationship between the rank of the coal and the incidence of CWP. For example, an inves¬tigation conducted in Pennsylvania and West Virginia coal mines concluded that the prevalence of CWP increases with an increase in coal rank (1). A study in Great Britain also observed a close relationship between the rank of coal and the prevalence of CWP (2). However, another study involving 312 Appalachian coal miners concluded that the association between coal rank and CWP might be fortuitous and that other factors may be more important (3). In addition, an investigation involving 2,600 miners during a period of twenty years in Great Britain established that there is only a weak correlation between the prevalence of CWP and the rank of the coal (4). Consequently, it appears that there is still uncertainty as to whether or not the rank of the coal seam has an influence on the development of CWP.Another area of investigation concerns the relationship between the mean mass of respirable dust present in the mine atmosphere and the prevalence of CWP. A study involving 4,122 miners over a period of ten years in Great Britain noted a high correlation between the mean mass of respirable dust and the incidence of CWP (5). Another investigation involving 3,154 British face workers con¬cluded that the overall mass of respirable dust is the factor most closely related to the ten-year attack rate of CWP (6). However, a study conducted in thirty-one mines in the United States concluded that it is doubtful that the quantity of respirable dust alone is responsible for the difference in the prevalence of CWP (7). Even though there are conflicting conclusions, there are many more investigators who confirm, rather than deny, the relationship between the mean mass of respirable dust and the development of CWP.The third subject of investigation is the role of quartz in the incidence of CWP. For example, two studies in Great Britain concluded that the quartz content in coal mine dust has no relationship to the prevalence of CWP (8,9). But a study involving 312 Appalachian coal miners revealed that the level of exposure to free silica plays an important role in the development of CWP (10). Once again, the conclusions reached by different researchers are conflicting.Probably the most important factor in the discrepancy among the studies is the variability among different coal mines. A mine operating in an inherently ""dusty"" seam may have a low concentration of respirable dust while a mine operating in a less dusty seam may have a high concentration of respirable dust. This discrepancy is a result of variables such as the effectiveness of ventilation or the efficiency of the water sprays. Consequently, it is very difficult to compare the dustiness of different coal seams by in-mine measurements of the respirable dust concentration. A laboratory test would more accurately characterize a coal seam according to its respirable dust production."
