Vermiculite is the commercial name used to describe a micaceous mineral that expands appreciably when heated. This process, called exfoliation, results in a light weight material. The light weight material is also called vermiculite, or more exactly, expanded vermiculite. Practically all uses of vermiculite are for the expanded material. Composition and Properties Vermiculite, in its natural state, has the characteristic micaceous habit and a perfect basal cleavage and readily splits into thin laminae, which are soft, pliable, and inelastic. The monoclinic crystal faces are often marked by triangular lines at 60° and 120°. The hardness varies from 1.5 to 2 or more, depending on the composition. The specific gravity varies from 2.2 to 2.7; specific heat 0.2; fusion temperature 2,000° to 2,500°F; luster pearly to greasy; color amber, bronze, brown, dark green, and black. Feel is like talc and sometimes soapy when wet. When heated quickly at elevated temperatures, vermiculite exfoliates by expanding at right angles to the cleavage into long wormlike pieces (the name vermiculite is from the Latin vermiculari, to breed worms). This important characteristic of expansion is believed to be a mechanical separation of the layers when the contained water is converted to steam. The increase in bulk volume of commercially prepared material is 8 to 12 times, but individual flakes may expand as much as 30 times. There is no expansion parallel to the cleavage. Vermiculite may also be expanded by several chemical processes such as soaking in hydrogen peroxide, weak acids and other electrolytes. The color changes during expansion. Heat-treated material changes to a light golden bronze or cream color depending on composition. The conditions of heating affect color. Heating in an oxidizing atmosphere produces reddish colors and heating in a reducing atmosphere produces dull gray colors. The iron is generally not oxidized during chemical expansion. Vermiculite is hydrated magnesium-aluminum silicate. Although there has been much research on the chemical and structural composition, there is not yet complete agreement on the exact formula and composition. This is to be expected since vermiculite is not a mineral of fixed composition and different workers have examined different varieties. It has been proposed that vermiculite is not a single species but a family of related minerals. This has also resulted in many names for the particular vermiculite found in a certain deposit. All of this difficulty arises from the very nature of its crystal chemistry. Unlike most minerals, certain crystal structure properties and the chemical composition can be changed by the ordinary forces of nature or in the laboratory. This would suggest that vermiculite be thought of more as a variable mineral rather than a group of related species. It was stated on page 261 of this volume in the chapter on Clay Minerals by H. H. Murray of the Georgia Clay Co., that vermiculite is an equidimensional, expandable clay mineral. Gruner (ref. 14, Chap. 12) showed that the structure consists of a layer made up of two silica tetrahedral sheets with a central magnesium, iron octahedral sheet separated by two layers of water molecules and adsorbed magnesium and calcium ions. "The Vermilion range extends from the vicinity of Tower to and beyond the ""international boundary, crossing into Canada at the eastern end of Hunter's Island. The underground workings at this mine are some 4,500 feet in extent east and west, and over 1,500 feet in depth. The structure here is probably the most complex in the Lake Superior iron districts. Above the iron bearing formation, geologically, comes the basal conglomerate of the Lower Huronian, carrying large boulders and Masses of the iron bearing rocks."

Earlier this year, Simplot Phosphates achieved a safety milestone at its Vernal, UT phosphate operations. In March, the entire operation reached achieved seven years without a lost time accident. And the mine operations at Vernal reached the 1 million hours benchmark without a lost time accident. This million hour achievement has been 19 years in the making. This achievement reflects the mine’s strong attitude towards safety, the company said. Safety is an integral part of its culture and requires diligence and considerable work. Introduction The Vernal Phosphate Operation is located in northeastern Utah, about 18 km (11 miles) north of Vernal, about 280 km (175 miles) east of Salt Lake City, UT. The plant began initial operations in 1961 under the name of the San Francisco Chemical Co. In 1981, Chevron purchased the operation from Stauffer Chemical Co. In 1982, plant capacity was doubled to about 72.6 kt/a (800,000 stpy) of phosphate concentrate. From 1984 to May 1986, another expansion increased the capacity to 1.2 Mt/a (1.3 million stpy) of concentrate. It also incorporated a number of equipment and process changes designed to increase the overall plant phosphate recovery. A 150-km (94-mile) slurry pipeline, the world's longest phosphate pipeline, was also constructed from the Vernal plant to a new Chevron Chemical and Fertilizer plant near Rock Springs, WY. Over the past five years, plant expansions and the pipeline construction have been accomplished without missing a single concentrate shipment.

Chevron Resources Company owns and operates an open pit phosphate mine and mill 11 miles north of Vernal, Utah. The plant currently produces 500,000 tons per year of concentrate and has the capacity to produce 750,000 tons per year. The operation is currently being expanded to 1,300,000 tons per year of concen¬trate in order to supply a new fertilizer plant being constructed by Chevron Chemical Company in Rock Springs, Wyoming. A 10-inch, 96-mile pipeline is being built to transport the concentrate from Vernal to Rock Springs. The present and expanded operation will be discussed. HISTORY In 1915, Harry Ratliffe staked nearly 15,000 acres of low to medium grade phosphate rock along the southern flank of the Uintah Mountains. This deposit became the largest privately owned phosphate deposit containing approximately 700 million tons of reserves. Initial development of the deposit began in 1958 by San Francisco Chemical, a joint venture between Stauffer Chemical Company and Mountain Copper Limited. In 1968, Stauffer Chemical Company bought out Mountain Copper Limited and became sole owner and operator. In 1981, Chevron Resources Company bought the property from Stauffer and has operated the mining and milling operations since.

Traditionally, the predominant drilling method in open pit mining has been large hole rotary drilling using cumbersome, inflexible equipment offering merely limited scope for improvements in pit design and overall costs. By contrast, the recent development of comparatively light high-pressure down-the-hole hammer crawlers has paved the way for new ideas and trends. High penetration rates coupled with superior mobility and fast set-ups contributing to substantial productivity gains have resulted in a renascence for this drilling method in open pits. The ability to cover a wide range of hole diameters and angles gives designers unique drill pattern possibilities especially when establishing steep and stable pit slopes. As pre-split holes, buffer holes and production holes all can be drilled by using the same equipment, there are, there are obvious advantages in production scheduling as well as in materials handling and service. This paper presents some case stories, which will demonstrate the benefits and improvements that the introduction of new drilling methods and equipment has brought to open pit mining operations.

Roadheaders are gaining widespread acceptance in North America as a means for mechanical tunnel excavation. Until recently, almost all of the large-scale North American tunnel projects were excavated one of two ways ? the tried and true drill-and-blast method or with the use of tunnel boring machines (TBM), the hi-tech super-excavators. TBMs enjoyed fast-growing popularity worldwide as TBM manufacturers offered greater technology to meet the demand of the civil tunnel industry in the late 20th century. Recently, though, more tunnel projects, large and small, can thank the brute force of a roadheader for getting the job done.

With all of the unknowns associated with tunnel construction, how does a contractor choose a roadheader? This paper presents a review of several models of roadheaders being used in today?s tunnel projects. The features of different models of roadheaders are presented and compared. Roadheader size and cutter power generally determine which roadheader is best for a particular job. We will also present a model for matching features of the roadheader to the anticipated ground conditions such that the most efficient machine is selected for the project.

"The increased costs of underground mining have continually challenged engineers to identify opportunities for alternatives to common approaches to underground development. Considerations to the design of horizontal and vertical development at the Dugald River mine targeted inclined raise boring to reduce horizontal development, not only to reduce cost, but to allow development activities to focus on other areas of the mine.The mine plan consists of 50 raise bored ventilation shafts, of which 17 have been mined to date with diameters ranging from 3.1 m to 5 m and lengths from 30 m to 200 m. The expected performance and stability of these shafts has been determined using methodologies proposed by McCracken and Stacey (1989) and further refined by Peck, Coombes and Lee (2011). Actual raise performances have been collated and compared to a database of raise bore performances across Australia as presented by Coombes, Lee and Peck (2011), and form a database of raise bore performance specific to Dugald River.Opportunities to further optimise the mine plan and reduce costs have seen the introduction of large diameter-inclined raise bored ventilation shafts to minimise the required lateral development to connect the ventilation circuits. Large diameter inclined shafts ranging between 3.1 m and 4.5 m in diameter have been successfully mined with dips down to 70°, reducing the cost of lateral development by more than $1 million over the next two years.Both technical and operational challenges were overcome in the mining of large diameter-inclined raise bores, including modification of: existing methodologies of assessing shaft wall stability for inclined raises. These included variations of the McCracken and Stacey method and the utilisation of the modified stability number (N’) previously developed for stope performance (Potvin, 1988). both the collar and toe development profiles, including the general set-up of the raise bore drill rig to reduce the operational risks associated with angled raises.Due to their success, inclined raises have been designed for subsequent stages of the life-of-mine ventilation system at Dugald River. The Building Research Establishment installed a base load cell in a driven cast-in-place pile prior to it being tested under vertical load. The monitored base loads were found to be significantly less than could have been predicted by current design methods. The less than expected capacity was attributed to the drilling out procedure. An electro-level system installed in a second similarly formed pile, provided detailed information on the performance of the pile under lateral load. The information obtained was used to check several current design methods for laterally loaded piles. The findings show the potential dangers of attempting to improve design parameters from only limited performance data.

Blast vibration monitoring for buried pipelines is typically conducted at the ground surface with a shallowly buried geophone. In many jurisdictions across the U.S., blast-related vibration limits set for pipelines are dictated by surface measurements and do not consider the significant reduction of PPV amplitudes acting on the pipe at depth. This study involved a vertical array of geophones deployed in drilled holes at two blasting sites of the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway construction project in Phoenix, Arizona. The vibrated beam method of installing a vertical barrier wall is one of the least applied techniques, yet given certain site conditions and constraints, it is a cost-effective and proven method of controlling lateral groundwater flows. A recent full-scale application of this technique demonstrated its usefulness at an active manufacturing facility located in Northern Wisconsin. At this site, a 3,233 foot long cutoff wall was keyed into an underlying bedrock, which was located an average of 40 feet below the ground surface. Using a slag cement-clay based slurry, a 1E-7 cm/sec or less, nominal 4-inch wide cut-off wall was constructed using the vibrated beam method. Challenges included working around an active manufacturing facility with minimal access to the work area; installing the wall through a very dense glacial till; minimizing soil excavation volumes of potentially impacted soil; and, working around and adjacent to numerous active utility lines without impacting the facility operations. At utility locations, the vibrated beam wall was supplemented with a jet grout panel wall, without the need to bypass or otherwise interrupt any of the plant?s utilities. Quality control consisted of the monitoring and measuring of slurry parameters, survey control, and real-time monitoring and documentation of all critical barrier wall installation parameters. A vibration monitoring plan was also implemented to measure vibrations at utilities and adjacent facility structures. Proper equipment selection, significant up-front planning and close coordination with the facility resulted in a safe and successful project. The work was completed ahead of schedule during the 2009 construction season.

"In Japan, most pile foundations using pre-cast concrete piles are installed by the bored pre-cast piling method, wherein pre-cast piles are installed in holes that have been excavated beforehand and filled with cement milk (term used for cement water slurry in Japan). The bored pre-cast piling method with enlarged base, in which the portion near the toe is enlarged during boring operation, is widely used because of the cost benefits and the increased vertical bearing capacity that this method offers.The EX MEGATOP method, further developed as an improved bored pre-cast piling method with enlarged base, is reported here. The features of this method are: (1) High vertical bearing capacity; (2) High degree of freedom in design; (3) Excellent workability; and (4) Friendly to the environment. In particular, high vertical bearing capacity can be obtained using nodular piles and by enlarging the area at the pile toe and shaft. This method can gave a vertical bearing capacity coefficient at the toe of a=430, more than twice the corresponding value of a = 200 of a conventional bored pre-cast pile. Moreover, the shaft resistance can be several times larger than that of a conventional bored pre-cast pile. This report gives an overview of the EX MEGATOP method, evaluation of vertical bearing capacity, and examples of application of the method.1.lntroductionMost pile foundations in Japan are installed by the bored pre-cast piling method, that is, in holes that have been excavated beforehand and filled with cement water slurry, referred to as 'cement milk'. High tonnage hoisting of materials by vertical conveyors through deep shafts is a relatively new concept in mining that is proving to be effective. The development of the Pocketlift® belt by Metso Flexowell, located in Moers, Germany, enabled the installation of a deep shaft vertical conveyor in 2002. This application followed years of design and operational experience gained in medium-depth shafts around the world. The Centennial orebody was discovered and named in 1970, Manitoba's centennial year. It is relatively small, about 2 million tons. Strike length varies from 400 to 600 feet and widths from 10 to 60 feet; dip is 75 degrees. Low grade and metal prices demanded low-cost mining, and the mine was developed for conventional sublevel stoping. As the ore lay entirely under a large lake, ground movement had to be avoided and the stopes were to be filled hydraulically. Late in 1973, vertical crater retreat mining was introduced at Inco Limited, Sudbury, to recover pillars between filled stopes. It proved satisfactory and the results were publicized by CIL, who developed the technique. The method seemed to offer some advantages and one stope at Centennial Mine was selected to be mined by VCR while production was maintained from blasthole stopes. The trial stope was safe and showed lower development costs, reduced drilling time, a favourable powder factor and good fragmentation. VCR mining is now an accepted method at HBM&S Co., Ltd., and its use is being extended.

INTRODUCTION Mill production from the Homestake Mine in 1979 amounted to 1.29 Mt (1.43 million st) of ore containing 5.9 g/t of gold (0.172 oz per st) compared with 1978 production of 1.44 Mt (1.59 million st) containing 6.2 g/t of gold (0.180 oz per st). The average cost per ounce of gold produced in 1979 rose to approximately $250 contrasted with $176 in 1978. This increase in unit cost is the result of inflation, a diminishing ore grade, and productivity losses related to a shortage of experienced miners as well as compliance with federal regulatory requirements. Together, these factors prompted the investigation of several large-scale, highly mechanized underground mining methods. This analysis indicated Vertical Crater Retreat mining to be one of the safest underground methods known today, yet competitive with all other forms of stoping in terms of cost and productivity. Therefore, the feasibility of applying the VCR stoping method at the Homestake Mine was explored. Vertical Crater Retreat stoping is a recent innovation in large- scale underground mining based on C. W. Livingston's crater blasting theories. Figure 1 illustrates the method which consists of drilling 165.1-mm-diameter (6.5-in.) holes from a topsill down-dip to an under- cut on the level below. The bottom of each hole is then loaded from above with a predetermined charge weight and horizontal slices up to 4.27 m (14 ft) in thickness are blasted into the undercut. Broken ore is extracted from drawpoints located on or below the undercut level.

The introduction of Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) Stoping at the Homestake Mine in Lead, SD, constitutes a major advance in Homes take Mining Company's efforts to improve productivity and reduce costs through underground mine mechanization. The work to date indicates that Vertical Crater Retreat Stoping is one of the safest methods of underground hardrock mining today, and is competitive with all other forms of stoping in terms of cost and productivity. Homes take anticipates that VCR stoping rill account for approximately 30% of the total mine production in 1980.

INTRODUCTION The introduction of 165-mm (61/z-in.) holes to underground mining operations has made possible the application of Canadian Industries Ltd's (CIL) vertical crater retreat (VCR) mining method, illustrated in the accompanying sketches. This unique and revolutionary new application of spherical charge technology (see the Appendix), when applied to primary stopes and pillar recovery, eliminates raise boring, slot cutting, and dilu¬tion of ore by backfill; greatly improves fragmentation; reduces labor and time requirements; eliminates uphole drilling and blasting; and minimizes or completely elimi¬nates damages by blasts to the walls and retreating backs of the stope or pillar. If vertical large diameter holes are drilled on a designed pattern from a cut over a stope or pillar to bottom in the back of the undercut, and spherical charges of explosives are placed within these holes at the calculated optimum distance from the back of the undercut and detonated, a vertical thickness of ore will be blasted downwards into the previously mined area. Repeating this loading and blasting procedure, min¬ing of the stope or pillar retreats in the form of horizontal slices in a vertical upwards direction until the top sill is blasted and the mining of a stope or pillar is completed. The VCR method is also applicable to drop raises and has the potential to replace all other raising methods under most circumstances. PILLAR RECOVERY Levack Mine Inco Metals Co., Ontario Div., provided the first opportunity for the method in pillar recovery. The Levack mine's high grade ore pillar No. 4800 on the 975-m (3200-ft) level was used for the production¬scale experiment (Figs. 1 to 3). The pillar was about 49 m (160 ft) long, 6 m (20 ft) wide, and 20 to 26 m (65 to 85 ft) high. The mined area on both sides of the pillar was backfilled with a 1:30 cement:sand mixture. The pillar was removed in two phases. In phase 1, the standard uphole method was used to blast down the 18-m (60-ft) long section of waste from the bottom of the ore into the undercut. From the pillar's top sill, 165-mm (61/a-in.) holes were drilled downward into the pillar, and by measuring the depth of the holes, the results of the uphole blast were determined and roof line 1 was established. The bottom of each hole was plugged, then filled with sand to place the center of gravity of each spherical charge (loaded from the top sill) at a predetermined optimum distance from the horizontal free surface. The charges were then detonated. After detonation, both draw drifts were full of extremely well-broken material. The depth of each hole was measured again, and the plot of these depths re¬sulted in roof line 2. The same blasting procedure was repeated and the resultant new back elevation was marked by roof line 3. The poor results of the initial uphole blast at one location (notice the peak in area 1) appeared to influ¬ence the subsequent new backs. A third blast success¬fully evened the back, and resulted in roof line 4. An unblasted slab averaging 6.3 m (20.9 ft) thick remained below the pillar's top elevation as the final sill. In all three spherical charge blasts fragmentation of the blasted material was extremely fine. The backfill was fully exposed on both sides of the now-blasted pillar. The backfill remained undamaged and the ore was not diluted by sand. The remnants of all the 165-mm (61/2 -in.) holes remained clean and undamaged, and the holes had well-defined bottoms that could be easily measured and plugged. Each blast took down a 3.9 to 4.2-m (13 to 14-ft) thick horizontal slab of ore. Productivity was three times greater than that of the previously practiced cut-and-fill method. Since this was the first such experiment, blasting the remaining 6-m (20-ft) thick final slab was the sub¬ject of some deliberation. If the described method was repeated, we could have ended up with a 1.8-m (6-ft) thick sill unsafe to work on. From time to time the question of shearing or vertical cutting of rooms and entries especially as an adjunct to the usual horizontal cuts, has cropped up in the literature of coal mining and in the discussions of mining men. Exact and definite data based an thorough tests have usually been lacking however and the present article is written to supply as far as possible this deficiency. The tests given below were made over a period of 90 days in the summer of 1921 and the object was to investigate the general .economics, if any, that might result from the introduction of vertical cutting as a standard practice into the Clear Creek mines. The machine used was the Oldroyd Universal coal cutter and comparative tests were made against the Goodman Straight- face machine and the 35 B Jeffrey Shortwall. The tests however should be held to apply only to the various methods of cutting and not as a study in the relative merits of the various machines. The first series of tests were made in the 2nd East district of No. 3 mine, where only entries were being driven at the time, the tests therefore cover only entry work. The presumption was that the entry width would be 12 feet but the oxerrun in some cases was marked enough to make the work comparable to rooms. The first test made was to determine the time necessary to shear as well as cut the places, and the results were reduced to the time necessary to cut a ton of coal. The time for shearing in the table includes the time necessary to revolve the cutter bar to the vertical position.
