This work is both a revision and an elaboration of Bureau of Mines Bulletin 371, which was published in 1934 and included data available to October 1933. During the intervening years, a large number of new experimental, high-temperature, heat-content data have become available through continuous, systematic efforts of the Pacific Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines and the Laboratory for Inorganic and Physical Chemistry of the University of Groningen (Netherlands), coupled with various individual investigations at many institutions. In addition, calculations from spectroscopic and molecular constant data have been extended and applied to a wide variety of gaseous substances. This bulletin purposes to collect and correlate all available high-temperature heat-content and specific-heat data for inorganic sub-stances and to formulate tables and algebraic expressions for their representation. It is hoped in this manner to remove some of the tedium of thermodynamic calculations for industrial metallurgical research workers and engineers who often have available only an inadequate library in this field. It is expected also that this bulletin will have value to those teaching courses in metallurgical and chemical thermodynamics.

The collection and correlation of thermodynamic data concerning substances of metallurgical interest have constituted one of the major activities of the Pacific Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, at Berkeley, Calif., for the past several years. Earlier bulletins (32, 33, 34, 36, 36, 37, 38) s in this series are entitled: (1) Contributions to the Data on Theoretical Metallurgy. I. The Entropies of Inorganic Substances; (2) Contributions to the Data on Theoretical Metallurgy. II. High-Temperature Specific-Heat Equations for Inorganic Substances; (3) Contributions to the Data on Theoretical Metallurgy. III. The Free Energies of Vaporization and Vapor Pressures of In¬ organic Substances; (4) Contributions to the Data on Theoretical Metallurgy. IV. Metal Carbonates--Correlations and Applications of Thermodynamic Properties; (5) Contributions to the Data on Theoretical Metallurgy. V. Heats of Fusion of Inorganic Substances; (6) Contributions to the Data on Theoretical Metallurgy. VI. A Revision of the Entropies of Inorganic Substances-1935; and (7) Contributions to the Data on Theoretical Metallurgy. VII. The Thermodynamic Properties of Sulphur and its Inorganic Compounds. The present paper collects and discusses thermodynamic data relating to metal carbides and nitrides, with the view of obtaining usable heat and free energy of formation relationships. Pertinent data on both classes of substances are difficult to obtain experimentally and consequently are extremely rare; it is therefore necessary in many cases, if equations are to be derived, to introduce certain approximations and assumptions. Lack of adequate means of checking results by utilizing data of different types, such as was done frequently in the bulletins dealing with carbonates and sulphates, are readily apparent to anyone who has made even a cursory examination of the available information. Consequently, some of the relationships derived undoubtedly will be found to be inaccurate when more or better data become available. The first bulletin (269) 3 in this series, which appeared in 1932, compiled the entropy values then available for the elements and in-organic compounds, results being listed for some 150 substances. Elaborations and revisions followed in 1936 (272) and 1941 (280), when over 500 usable entropy values were tabulated. The present bulletin constitutes a further elaboration and revision. The accumulation of data since 1940 has been marked, and 800 entropy values now are available. The present bulletin also contains all the pertinent explanatory matter that appeared in its predecessors. Thus, it retains the same dual purpose of assembling the available values of the entropies at 298.16° K. of the elements and inorganic compounds and giving enough explanation of methods of calculating entropies to make the results comprehensible.

COMPOSITION OF CHARGES AND CONSUMPTION OF FUEL AT VARIOUS WORKS. A MARKED peculiarity of most of the smelting-works of the Far West is the looseness with which accounts of the operations are kept. Indeed, probably over half of the works do not keep any detailed accounts at all, the yearly gross statement of profit or loss being considered sufficient for all purposes. The reasons for this must apparently be sought in the as yet unsettled state of all business relations, and in the deplorable fact that only in isolated cases educated metallurgists are in charge of the smelting-works. Continual and regular assays of the ores, by-products, and slags, are almost unknown, so that it is impracticable to ascertain, even approximately, the losses in the smelting processes. Of cases where regular accounts are kept of the quantities of ore smelted, of the composition of charges, and of the fuel consumed, I know only two or three. Under these circumstances it is extremely difficult to collect figures which cover the operations for a considerable length of time, and which are so valuable for the metallurgist, who wishes to get an insight into the economy of smelting operations, as shown by practice. Figures obtained by personal observation, which can of course cover only the brief space of the visit of the travelling metallurgist, must, therefore, be made to replace the more valuable data. The writer has had occasion, during the last and the preceding summer, to visit the larger number of the Western lead-smelting works, and offers, in the following pages, such data relating to the economy of lead-smelting in the blast furnace at various works, as he has been able to obtain. The only object in doing so is to place these figures on record, so that they may be from time to time supplemented with other data, which are now wanting. I. As the world’s reserves of coarse and high-grade iron ores continue to shrink, beneficiation is becoming increasingly important. The resulting concentrates cannot be used directly as feedstock for iron making, but require an additional agglomeration step. Pelletizing is preferred, because the uniform chemical, physical, and metallurgical characteristics of pellets make them a more desirable feed for the iron making processes. The heat hardening or induration of pellets is typically done in shaft furnaces, grate-kiln systems or on straight grates. Rotary kilns were originally developed in the late 19th century for Portland cement production [1]. The main development work for the successful adaptation of the process to the thermal treatment (induration) of green balls from iron ore was performed by Allis Chalmers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA in the 1960’s [2].The straight grate process, which was first used in 1955 at Silver Bay, Minnesota, was a dedicated development with the aim to pelletize and indurate magnetite (taconite) concentrate [2]. There are various important technical and economical distinctions between the two pelletizing technologies. The most important differences include that a grate-kiln has three distinct pieces of equipment, a preheat grate, a rotary kiln and an annular cooler, whereas in the case of a straight grate, the entire indurating process is done on one piece of equipment only. In addition, both technological solutions have differences in their recuperation systems, direction of air flow in drying, number of burners, form of pellet movement, etc., which cause differences in raw material suitability, process control, economical aspects, plant operation and product pellet quality.

The preparation of coal is essentially the same for export as it is for the domestic market. The big difference, I would say, is that, while coal for certain domestic uses (utilities, for instance) need not always be of the highest quality, as long as it is uniform, the buyer of coal for export invariably demands a well-prepared, top-quality product. And he is willing to pay for it, as long as he knows what he is buying. This is where quality control enters the picture. The day is long past since the export market was the dumping ground for coals which could not be sold on the domestic market. Today, the export buyer wants American coals not so much for a price but for the necessity of blending the American coals with foreign coals to achieve the desired chemical and/or physical characteristics, To blend intelligently, he must know in detail what are the qualities of the coals to be blended. Sampling and chemical analysis facilities at the piers provide the information on the coals exported, These facilities are maintained for the export buyer by independent laboratories; however, in one instance, the buyer operates his own laboratory. With very few exceptions, and Clinchfield?s Moss No. 3 mid-volatile coal is one, cargoes shipped overseas are loaded as blends of two or more coals. Up to now, foreign requirements have not been too clearly defined; therefore, shippers must be prepared to blend mixtures of the desired combination. Successful blending requires an accurate knowledge of the coals shipped. And this makes it necessary for the coal producer to maintain his own control laboratory.

The concentrated efforts now being directed towards the development and application of monitoring and control techniques have now resulted in their widespread use in UK mines together with evidence of benefits resulting from their application. There is little doubt that the longwall method of producing deep mined coal will continue but will be made more reliable and efficient with the aid of control technology. The major fields of research and development work are concerned with planning and design of mines and mining equipment; management and engineering information; and automation of coalface, tunnelling and transport systems. The principal achievements now in widespread use are: the standard computer system MINOS, widely applied to mine transport, coalfaces and mine environment; extensive use of machine condition monitoring leading to condition-based maintenance; underground automation of conveyor systems and guidance systems for ranging drum shearers and boom-type roadheaders are being widely introduced.

Water sprays on mining machines are generally put there to reduce dust; however, research by the Bureau of Mines and others has shown that considerable airflows may also be generated by these sprays. This recognition of water spray-gen- erated air movement led to the "Spray-Fan" - a continuous miner auxiliary ventilation system which was shown to reduce methane peaks by a factor of 15. Recent successes and failures of the Spray Fan are reviewed. More recently, the same principles were used in the design of the "Shearer- Clearer" for reducing dust at longwall shearer operators. The original design was successful; however, a new design is now available which is more practical to install and does a much better job of holding the dust against the face downwind of the shearer. The latest research objective is to eliminate the negative impact of spray- generated air turbulence on continuous miner dust control. Most coal faces in the USA are ventilated in the exhaust mode using "line curtain", and the forward airflow on the side of the heading opposite the curtain is inevitably weak. Air turbulence generated by sprays which are incorrectly located and/or operated at excessive pressures can cause roll back - in which the dust cloud at the face is forced unwind against the ventilation and spreads over the miner cnerator. The general approach to reducing "roll back." is reviewed and art anti-roll back water spray system is presented.

KIOST has developed the pilot mining robot, named MineRo ?? from early-2011 to mid- 2012. The robot consists of two unit-modules having an identical mechanical structure and hydraulic system. One unit-module has two track systems, two pick-up devices, two crushers, one lifting pump and one thruster. The pick-up device is fitted on the frame of the track device. All actuators are driven hydraulically, which are manipulated by valves and the controllers. Each unit-module is equipped with one dual HPU of 250kW / 4,000V. PWM-16 (INNOVA AS) as hydraulic valve controller is adopted, which outputs PWM signals of 16 channels and can be used under pressure in oil-filled box. To measure angular velocity or displacement of hydraulic actuator, turbine-type flow-meters are adopted. The flow-meter has RF (Radio Frequency) type pulse detector, which extends the flow range by eliminating drag on the rotor. Two track motors, two crusher motors, lifting pump, one thruster can be controlled their velocities through feedback of the measured flow-rates. As well as the flow-rates, the states of the hydraulic system such as hydraulic pressures, temperatures, leakages are measured through a self-developed flow-pressure canister. In that canister, multi-channel amplifier boards are installed, through which the vast amount of data is acquired and transmitted to the main controller using serial communication.

Sampling equipment manufacturers endeavour to ensure that the mechanical equipment installed in sampling systems are designed and manufactured to adhere to the requirements of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) or other standards relevant to the application. The mechanical parameters necessary to achieve these standards can be well controlled and requirements such as constant speed can be met through good mechanical design and engineering. However, when the equipment is installed and put into operation, the ISO compliance of the system is out of the hands of the equipment manufacturer and handed to the operator, who may be a generalist control system integrator.Making a sampling system perform according to standards, and being able to monitor and report on compliance require that the sampling system knowledge and the control integration is combined and applied in an integrated approach. Using a dedicated library of control routines developed for sampling can change a system from having compliant equipment to being a compliant system. Converters have been playing an important role in the extraction and processing of metals ever since the first type of converter was invented about 100 years ago. Historically their operation has been mainly based on the experience of talented operators rather than on strict control and optimization technologies. However, in the new realities of unavoidable necessity to increase productivity and in the conditions of diversification of primary materials from various geographical areas, improving control and optimization techniques have become indispensable. In this paper a review of the authors? previous work in terms of improving control and optimization of converter operational practices related to magnetite content and precipitation, slag and metal blows, problematic and dangerous elements such as As, Sb etc. has been described by highlighting the advantages that the new control and optimization methods and tools bring to everyday converter practices. The over-all slope angle of between 55 and 60 degrees at the Adams Mine necessitates control blasting on the final pit walls. The control blasting techniques used are pre-shearing and buffer blasting. Pre-shearing with 2'I2-inch holes on 5-foot centers is used in areas where jointing and rock type are not conducive to smooth stable walls. Buffer blasting with 12'/4-inch holes is used in areas where the rock is competent. Control blasting adds to the operating costs, but can result in substantial savings in increased slope angle and reduced stripping.

En la presente investigación busca controlar la dilución del mineral realizando una explotación del tajo con un ancho de minado adecuado (0.6 m) y la selectividad de mineral económico y no económico utilizando el método minado corte y relleno ascendente realizando un análisis comparativo de la evaluación de malla de perforación actual y la evaluación de mallas de perforación nuevas, Tipo 2-1 y Tipo Zig-Zag, donde en esta propuesta se ha obtenido favorables resultados con la malla de perforación implementada puesto que se observa una reducción en el costo de voladura y costo de sostenimiento además de lograr la reducción del porcentaje de dilución.

En este trabajo, se muestra la metodología y controles de mitigación que se utilizan para reducir los incidentes por impacto de los eventos microsísmicos en las operaciones mineras. Durante el proceso de explotación de la mina Cerro de Pasco y dada la cercanía de la ciudad misma, esta se ha visto afectada por los problemas de vibración del terreno. En este sentido, el objeto del texto es determinar un control de las vibraciones a través de la voladura en el tajo Mc Cune de dicho yacimiento y así evitar daños a las construcciones civiles y labores de explotación subterránea.

La mina Cuajone es una de las minas de cobre más grandes que tiene el Perú, cuyo uso de bancos de mayor altura, taladros de mayor diámetro y explosivos de mayor potencia, ayuda en la reducción de costos de minado. Sin embargo, dichos factores causaron un incremento en la concentración de energía en el área de disparo, generando problemas de sostenimiento de las paredes finales de tajo. Por tal motivo, se utiliza el método de voladura controlada para verificar los efectos de voladura y así evitar que las fuerzas inherentes de las paredes no sean dañadas. Asimismo, el texto describe las técnicas que se aplican a dicho procedimiento: pre-corte, amortiguación, de pared uniforme y perforación lineal, las cuales son aplicadas para crear bajas concentraciones de energía del explosivo de la pared del tajo.

El presente trabajo describe el tratamiento que realizó la refinería de zinc de Cajamarquilla en sus afluentes para preservar el medio ambiente. Para ello, la construcción de dicha refinería ha establecido una serie de reglas precisas basadas en el avance tecnológico y la acción contra el medio ambiente de los desechos. Es decir, la refinería fue diseñada y construida con la tecnología más moderna, garantizando que sus efluentes cumplan los requerimientos más exigentes de preservación del medio ambiente.
