"It has been recently learned that certain foreign manufacturers are offering far importation into this country detonators at greatly reduced prices, some of these detonators being of such low grade (No.4), that their use would greatly increase the dangers in blasting.Detonators and electric detonators are used in initiating the explosion of the various high explosives that are now so extensively employed in a great variety of mining operations. Originally a large number of different grades (or ""strengths"") of detonators and electric detonators were marketed, the grade number indicating the weight of the charge of fulminating material contained in the copper case of the detonator. As late as 1914, a report of the Bureau of Mines (Bulletin 80, A primer an explosives for metal miners) shows that grades Nos. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, containing from 0.54 to 2.00 grams each, were being offered for use. However, the writer bad observed as early as 1896, when the more insensitive types of explosives like nitro-substitution explosives began to be introduced for use in mining and other blasting operations, that use of a high-grade detonator was essential to insure certainty of discharge."

An inusual job in controlling a gas well was executed on No. 1 well, Inland Oil and Refining Co., situated on the Alkali Butte structure, Freemont County, Wyoming. The work was done by the company in cooperation with the . S. Bureau of Minos, and resulted in a fuel saving of $5,000 in one season and of a repair job estimated at $15,000, or a total of $21,000. The woll had an open flow of 6,000,000 cubic feet of gas per day with a rock pressure of 560 pounds per square inch. A string of 6-1/4 inch casing with a toothed shoe was set on the cap rock above the gas sand at 2181 feet. Then the well was shut in, the gas worked out around both the 6-1/4 inch and 6-1/4 inch strings, breaking through the ground surface at several points under the derrick. Casing troubles encountered while drilling made it unsafe to attempt Coving the 6-1/4 inch string. Moreover, it was important from the standpoint of good management to make the gas from this well immediately available for fuel in other operations and, in addition, to save the gas from wasting. An ordinary mudding and cementing job would have necessitated sitting down this well for probably two months out of a very short operating season. For these rousons it was determined to mud the well, if possible, between the 6 and 8 inch strings by pumping mud fluid through the connection from the gas clamps. The gas clamps used wore of ordinary construction with a side outlet, making them equivalent to a Braden-hoad. When the mud fluid was pumped through the gas clamp into the space between the two strings, it began to appear inside the 6-1/4 inch string. It apparently entered the well either around the toothed shoe or through a "line sawed" leak in the string and was blown out of the well as fast as it was pumped in. In order to stop the leaks, about a half a gunny sack of finely chopped bull ropa was fed with the mud between the casings as before. The hemp gathered around the valves of the mud pump to some extent, and it also stuck in the casing-head fittings a few times. An obstruction in the casing- head would be removed by permitting the woll to "blow back" for a few seconds, and one in the pump valves, by removing the valves when necessary. In two days' time sufficient hemp and mud had been pumped into these strings to kill external and internal pressure. The wall was shut in and allowed to stand over night. Two general schemes have been used for the determination of gold and silver in material containing considerable quantities of copper ; one is known as the " all fire " method , and the other as the , " combination " , or " wet and dry" method . The all fire crucible method , using an excess charge of litharge , has been found satisfactory when the copper content of an ore is under 6 per cent , ( Loevy , J. , Zur Edelmetallbestimmung in hochprozentigen Kupfererzen : Chem. Ztg . Jarhrg . 35 , 1911 , p . 278 ) , or where the precious metal value is so great that a small sample can be used . In the latter case , silica is added until the copper ratio is sufficiently low . If there is more than 6 per cent of copper in an ore , the lead button obtained from a crucible fusion will require repeated scorification before . it can be cupelled successfully . Rescorification is not only tedious , but also causes a slag loss of precious metals . In combination methods , the copper is dissolved , and the gold and silver in the residue . is determined by fire assay Although some combination methods have given satisfactory results for gold and silver , they are not applicable when an estimation of the platinum metals is required . Since substances containing platinum are frequently high in copper , a study of methods which might be used for the estimation of small quantities of gold , silver , and the platinum metals in such material was considered worth while . The estimation of platinum in ores by fire assay methods has been described in Technical Paper 270 of the bureau; ( Davis , C.W. , The detection and estimation of platinum in ores : U. S. Bureau of Mines Tech . Paper 270 , 1921. ) the present paper , which is supplementary to that report , deals chiefly with the application of combination methods , taking them up to the point where the fire assay is to be applied .

The Bureau of Nines has received many inquiries on the subject of assaying oil-shales, both from individuals who desire to wake their own assay while in the field, and also from Commercial assayers and investigators. The present paper describes the assay retort used by the Bureau of Mines. in the research work on oil-shales now in progress at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the Bureau at Salt Lake City, Utah, and at the Colorado cooperative oil-shale laboratory, Boulder, Colorado. This retort, which was developed through experimentation in the bureau's laboratories, has been found to be convenient in use and. capable of yielding reproducible results. M. J. Gavin, Oil-Shale Technologist, gave valuable assistance in preparing the subject matter for publication and made many helpful suggestions during the experiments made by the writer in the course of the development of the assay retort. L. A. Anderson, research "fellow" University of Utah, assisted in the preliminary development of the assay retort.

It is noteworthy that 80 to 95 per cent of the gross production of all slate quarries in the United States is discarded as waste . In view of the loss involved in handling so much waste , and the consequent added cost of the finished product , the Bureau of Mines has undertaken a study of the slate industry for the purpose of devising the best means of reducing the proportion of waste , and of utilizing the unavoidable waste . The utilization of waste has received special attention , and the cooperation of many prospective purchasers of waste slate has been enlisted in testing its adaptability for various uses .

Ten years ago there was no general , country-wide service for the systematic training of miners in matters relating to safety . A beginning only had been made at a few scattered points . Under the old conditions each man was left largely to look out for himself in meeting the hazards of his day's work, and the foreman , shift bosses , and superintendents chiefly relied upon improvision when major accidents occurred . So long as the mines were small and the workers highly intelligent and well trained in routine mining methods , and when too , the pressure for output had not yet speeded up industry to the extent it has since those days , there was something to be said for this lais- sez faire attitude . When , however , the rapid expansion of industry lead to the introduction of new and little trained labor and to units of production of greatly increased size , the natural dangers of mining were greatly intensified . An accident in a small mine affects only a few; the same accident in a large mine , unless proper precautions have been taken , may cost the lives of many . The public does not generally recognize that the greatly increased outputs of the mines , of coal mines in particular , have been in recent years , obtained from substantially the same number of miners as ten years ago but with a personnel not nearly so well trained in mining . It is inevitable under : such conditions that more care must be devoted to avoiding accidents and much more elaborate preparations made for meeting them . In the years immediately preceding the establishment of the Bureau of Mines this speeding up of industry , change in the character of mine labor , and increasing hazard had all begun to be felt . Immediately prior to the organization of the Bureau of Mines , public attention had been drawn to a series of disastrous coal-mine explosions , to the increasing frequency of these disasters , and to the terrible loss of human life . resulting therefrom. One of the first problems , therefore ; confronting the Bureau was clearly that of finding methods of reducing the number of such disasters and lessening the severity of those that continued to occur . Toward this object were immediately directed the energies not only of the Bureau of Mines but also those of State mine inspectors , mine operators and various other agencies , all of whom were urged to cooperate in this great humanitarian work. The results of this work naturally cannot be measured by figures only . Work for increasing the health , safety , comfort , and happiness of human beings may not be gaged with mathematical precision . But certain features of this work as revealed by the record from year to year are of much interest . ”

A previous report of the Bureau of Mines* has supplied data for the physical and chemical properties of samples of crude petroleum produced in the eastern fields of the United States. It was issued as a preliminary chapter of a bulletin which is to cover the results of a survey of the entire country. The present report is a second preliminary chapter including figures that are available for the producing fields of the Rocky Mountain district. Work is being continued. with a series of samples from the States of Kansas and Oklahoma which will be described in a third preliminary chapter, to appear at a subsequent date. Acknowledgments. The obtaining of samples was rendered possible through the courtesy of representatives of a number of producing and refining companies operating in the Rocky Mountain district. The Bureau hereby acknowledges its appreciation of the hearty spirit of cooperation that was universally encountered.

"The tests described below were conducted by the Bureau of Mines at a lease in Oklahoma on installations designed to decrease evaporation losses of crude oil Pram storage tanks. Use of the lease was granted by the Oklahoma Producing and Refining Corporation of America. Tankage was obtained through the courtesy of the Parkensburg Pig and Reel Co. The purpose of the installations and tests was to demonstrate the value of making crude-oil storage tanks gas-tight, rather than to determine the amount of evaporation in any one type of tank. None of the tanks used were absolutely gas-tight, but one of them was very nearly so. They comprised a tank of the ordinary open type with an 18-inch manhole, a tank with a ""4-inch vent"", a tank with a ""smaller vent"", and a tank which had only ""pin holes"" through which air and vapor could pass freely. On the last two tanks any excess pressure was taken care of by an automatic differential pressure regulator.The results obtained in these tests indicate that tight tankage will soon pay for itself. They will not, however, serve as a basis on which a producer can compute the actual number of days necessary for tight tankage to pay out, because the oil used was exceptionally volatile. It is probable that the average evaporation loss in the Mid-Continent field is at least one-half as great as that shown by these tests, and if this is true, the saving that would be effected by providing tight tankage on the lease will undoubtedly justify the expense. The installation of evaporation-proof tanks on the lease has been delayed by the failure of production managers to realize, first, that their evaporation losses are enormous, and, second, that they can practically eliminate these losses by a simple and inexpensive installation."

"It is well known that the lost coal left in the ground in mining, under such conditions that recovery is practically impossible, constitutes a large proportion of the coal in the beds worked. A recent estimate, in a paper on ""The World's Fuel Supply"" presented by Prof. L. P. Breckinridge, of Yale University, before the Annual Meeting of the. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, places the average loss in bituminous coal mining as one-third left in the ground.The bald statement that there is a loss of one ton of coal for every two recovered may seem to those not familiar with coal mining to imply inexcusable and wanton waste. Perhaps a better way of expression is in terms of total recovery rather than in terms of losses. Many mine superintendents and mine owners will readily concede that their total recovery may be only 60 to 75 per cent, but to state that they are wasting 25 to 40 per cent arouses antagonism. The suggestion is of willful waste, whereas the majority of the operators try to the best of their ability to get a high recovery under the adverse and complex conditions that confront them. These involve natural, commercial, and labor conditions, and the requirement in many cases of boundary pillars under railroads and buildings, which may be called for in the deed or lease, or in the absence of specific exemption in the deed or lease, the common law requirement that a surface owner is entitled to the support of the surface."

"Properties and Uses.Iceland spar is a name given to a pure crystallized form of calcite (CaCo3) which is sufficiently transparent and free of defects to be used in the manufacture of optical instruments. While the actual requirements are small, the degree of purity and physical perfection demanded renders it somewhat difficult to obtain suitable material.The properties of value in Iceland spar are its transparency combined with double refraction. It is used in the manufacture of polarizing microscopes, saccharimeters, colorimeters and photometers. Its most important use is in the manufacture of Nicol prisms, which constitute an essential part of every polarizing microscope. The principle governing the construction of the Nicol prism is as follows:Ordinary light in passing through a crystal of calcite is resolved into two rays of plane polarized light vibrating in planes at right angles to each other and having different indices of refraction. Thus the two rays follow different paths through the crystal. The prism of Iceland spar is cut diagonally and cemented together again with a transparent cement having an index of refraction intermediate between the two rays passing through the prism. Canada balsam is employed for this purpose. The prism is cut at such an angle that the ray having the greatest index of refraction meets the surface of the balsam at an angle greater than the angle of total reflection, and it is thus deflected to the side of the prism, while the second ray passes through. Thus one of the rays is eliminated and polarized light vibrating in a single plane is obtained."

"Introductory Statement:In melting the nonferrous metals and alloys for foundry and rolling-mill work, even with the best practice, there is always a loss, due principally to oxidation. Melting losses are a serious source of financial loss in brass and bronze practice, but they are especially serious in the case of aluminum and its light alloys because of the relatively high price of aluminum. The indications are that the melting losses in many aluminum foundries of the United States are at times high, and in some plants (especially where certain furnaces are used) they are entirely too high when compared with the average practice. The fact that the oxidation losses in melting aluminum and its light alloys are high is well known, but it is doubtful whether the factors governing the most suitable methods of melting for a minimum of dross are equally well known. The metal losses involved in melting are worthy of especial attention now because of the rapidly growing importance of the aluminum industry.Factors in the operation of furnaces which affect metal and fuel losses:The essential requirements in the commercial melting of any metal or alloy are that the melting losses should be low, the melting should be rapid, and the melting cost should be low. Certainly it may not be possible to obtain these requirements in any furnace selected at random, and it follows that the design and the operation of furnaces for melting different metals are subjects that warrant the most extensive study and tests. As a general rule, in the industrial operation of furnaces, run on aluminum and aluminum alloys, an effort is made to keep the dross and oxidation losses as low as possible. In attempting to hold dross losses low, numerous factors involved in metal melting may be overlooked, or at least disregarded, and the net practical result may be that the furnace is exceedingly wasteful of fuel. In the case of aluminum and its light alloys, the effect of increasing the temperature of melting, at least in an atmosphere containing free oxygen and nitrogen, is to increase the net melting loss."

"Fire fighting in metal mines under the best of conditions is a dangerous, a slow, and a difficult task. Certain gases generated from combustible material burning in restricted areas are poisonous, even in small quantities, and can not be breathed without serious and often fatal results. In addition to poisonous gases, smoke is given off which obscures the vision of the fire fighter and frequently prevents him from gaining access to the fire area. Many fire-fighting crews have had to turn back because their vision was so impaired by the dense smoke that the fire area could not be located and there was danger of them becoming lost in the mine.In mines having mechanically controlled ventilation - that is, mines not dependent entirely upon natural air currents - the gas and smoke can be forced ahead of the fire-fighting crews, thereby facilitating exploration of the mine and saving the time, energy and oxygen of the mine rescue apparatus crews.Where currents of fresh air can be circulated up to points near the fire without danger of seriously spreading the fire, fresh air bases can be established in the immediate vicinity, and a more intelligent campaign for fighting or controlling the fire can be mapped out.Positive air currents through forced ventilation may also result in saving the lives of miners who otherwise might have been trapped in smoke and poisonous gases.It is generally known that comparatively few metal mines have attempted to regulate or control air currents, with the result that when a fire occurs underground, the normal ventilation may be reversed, short circuited, or the air current may be in one direction one minute and in the opposite direction the next; or, generally speaking, the ventilation can not be depended upon, and smoke and poisonous gases may accumulate in any part of the mine or ""drift"" on the fire-fighters or on the miners endeavoring to escape."

"Since the introduction of pulverized coal as a substitute fuel for natural gas in the various types of heating furnaces used, in steel mills, a number of fires and explosions have occurred, resulting in the loss of life and property.As one of the primary functions of the Bureau of Mines is to conduct investigations in the utilization of mineral substances with a view to increasing safety in the use thereof, it was deemed advisable to investigate the hazards involved in the industrial use of pulverized coal and, if possible, to devise methods of preventing future accidents arising therefrom. The knowledge of the explosive qualities of coal dust which the Bureau has gained in studies affecting dust explosions in coal mines was of material assistance in these investigations.Several plants were visited in which either fires or explosions had occurred, and data obtained as to the probable cause of the accidents.There was found to exist, among some of those employed about the furnaces, a lack of knowledge of the explosive and inflammable qualities of powdered coal.A small stream of pulverized coal leaking down from a defective joint in a coal transport line did not attract much attention, whereas, had a leak in a natural gas line occurred -wider similar circumstances, no doubt it would have had immediate attention.As a matter of fact, if by any means the duet cloud should come in contact with an open flame or hot metal, the effects would be as disastrous as if it had been gas.This is exceedingly well illustrated by an accident which came to the writer's attention. In the system used at this particular plant, the pulverized coal is transported to the furnace through compressed-air lines. The fuel is fed from a storage bin to a blowing tank in quantities as desired, after which compressed air is admitted and the powdered coal blown to the furnaces. At the time of the accident some repairs were being made to the tank, and it was supposed that the air pressure had been entirely released as the pressure gage stood at zero. There was, however, one or two pounds air pressure remaining and when one of the connections was taken off, a cloud of dust was blown across the room, 30 or 40 feet towards the drier furnace where it came in contact with some live coals. Immediately the entire room was filled with flame which rolled back and forth over a specs 50 feet or so in length."

"Introduction;As in the case of TNT previously presented*, this report presents the results of an investigation to discover the safest and best way of utilizing picric acid for industrial blasting purposes. It describes the physical and chemical properties of this explosive, gives precautions to be observed in handling, packing, preparation of cartridges, and holes, presents the results of field tests in blasting stumps and bowlders, and compares the results with those obtained from dynamite.The investigations reported herein were undertaken and this paper has been prepared, solely to aid in the salvage of the surplus picric acid accumulated for war uses and released by the declaration of the armistice. No funds were available nor have any been appropriated with which to defray the expense of converting this picric acid into any other form or to prepare any explosive mixture from it. The sole problem was to find appropriate uses for this military picric acid in existing needs and to show that it can be efficiently used in carrying out essential civil projects.It is not intended by this publication to promote the use of picric acid as an industrial explosive further than is necessary for the proper utilization of this surplus. On the contrary, the authors believe that picric acid by itself is unlikely to come into general use as an industrial explosive, chiefly because of its cost but also as shown by the clouds of smoke it emits on explosion and the nature of the reactions it undergoes because we do not obtain from it its highest efficiency. As demonstrated in its previous use in Joveite, better results and higher efficiencies may be obtained by mixing picric acid in proper proportions with sodium nitrate or ammonium nitrate, to more completely oxidize the picric acid, and another nitrosubstitution compound, such as nitronaphthalenes, with which do desensitize and waterproof the composition formed. By such admixture not only may the energy resident in the picric acid, be more fully utilized but the cost of the resulting blasting explosive should be much less than that of picric acid."

Coke breeze consists of the smaller particles of coke formed by handling coke on and after removal from the ovens. Its value as F, fuel is less than that of the larger pieces, both because the smaller pieces contain more ash and therefore have a lower calorific value, and because a greater draft is required to burn it.The tests described below show its value as a fuel when mixed with bituminous coal and burned in a hand fired boiler of a size considerably greater than that used in an ordinary house. The results of these tests, however, can be used to give a fairly good indication of the value of coke breeze when burned with bituminous coal in a domestic furnace.All who fire a domestic furnace know that for only a comparatively short part of the day, and then only on a few days, is it necessary to open fully the ash, pit door and stack damper to get the required rate of combustion in the average furnace in the average house. It will be practical, therefore, during the greater part of the heating season, to fire coke breeze with the coal and use more of the available draftsFor domestic heating the coke breeze should be stored separately, and used when the draft is sufficient to burn it in mixture with bituminous coal, at the rate required to warm the house.Purpose of tests: The tests were carried out at the request of the Chamber of Commerce of Pittsburgh, Pa., in order to determine the steaming value of coke breeze as a fuel when mired with Pittsburgh coal and fired by hand, and to see whether the mixture when burnt would give off an objectionable quantity of make.

"The Industrial Commission of Utah from a study of the accidents (especially the fatalities) occurring in connection with mining in the State was struck by the large number arising from lack of due care on the part of the employee injured or carelessness on the part of some fellow employee. Figures show that approximately 40% of the deaths are due to carelessness as against only ) 10% or 12% that can be laid to faulty conditions in the mines. With a view to reducing the number of these accidents an intensive campaign of education was inaugurated, conducted jointly by the Industrial Commission of Utah and the United States Bureau of Mines.Through the cooperation of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, Mine Rescue Car No. 11 operating in Utah has been utilized as the means of carrying on the campaign. In making the regular training visits to the mining camps of Utah the crew of car 11 was authorized to include with the courses of instruction in Mine Rescue and First Aid, safety and health rallies, foremen's safety meetings, and appeals carried on through the public schools to stimulate an awaking of personal responsibility of miners and their familiar' in safety and health endeavor. The work was placed under the direct charge of Dr. Murray who has had previous experience in similar work and brought to the campaign helpful enthusiasm. He was assisted by Bruce Johnson, fore¬man miner of Car 11, who had been safety engineer for the U. S. Smelting Company, and R. W. Clark, first aid miner of Car 11. The expense of providing posters, literature, pledge cars, buttons, rental of special educational films and incidental expenses of foremens' meetings has been born by the Industrial Commission.Plan of the Campaign.In planning the campaign the main object was to revive as much as possible, among the workers, a spirit of responsibility for safety. Any considerable reduction of preventable accidents can be accomplished only through the workers themselves who are responsible for such accidents, therefore, the more personal the application could be made to all the workers the greater the accruing results would be."

"In at least three out of every four working faces in metal mines there is no attempt made to cause air circulation other than by use of compressed air, and in at least nine cases out of ten the compressed air is released merely by opening, or partly opening, the valve and allowing the compressed air to escape through open air hose used to convey the compressed air to the drilling machines. Usually no blowers are in use during periods of drilling, as the exhaust from the drill provides cool, comparatively fresh air for the driller; however, in some instances, the compressed-air line is provided with a tea connection, which permits taking air for the drill from one side of the tee, and air for ventilation through a separate hose used as a blower, simultaneously with drilling.Table 1 contains temperature and humidity data as to compressed-air blowers from open end of air hose at 36 working places in eleven metal mines of four States, embracing the mining of gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc ores, and at horizons ranging from 500 feet below the surface to as low as 4900 feet.It is noticed that the ordinary air surrounding the worker at the face gives an average wet bulb temperature of 81.7° F. for the 36 working faces, with 84.7° F. dry bulb and 87.2 per cent relative humidity. The average wet bulb tem¬perature of 36 readings at these working faces of compressed air at the end of the,hose as the air issues from the hose was 67.4° F., or 14.3 degrees lower than the average wet bulb readings of the air of the working places; however, the average dry bulb temperature of the 36 readings of compressed air as it issued from the end of the hose was 79.7° F., or only 5 degrees less than that of the general air (84.7°); the relative humidity was 51.1 per cent as against 87.2 per cent for the surrounding air. Readings were taken in five raises, seven crosscuts, ten drifts and 14 stopes.It will be noted that the velocity or movement of the general atmosphere at each of the entire 36 working faces, was found to be practically imperceptible; this might readily be inferred since compressed air is rarely used on blowers if there is adequate circulation of the general air of the place. Where rook temperatures could be obtained readily, they are shown; it is noticeable that the dry bulb temperature of the air of the working place varies little from the rock temperature, and that the dry bulb temperature of the compressed air as it issues from end of air hose varies only a few degrees from the temperature of the surrounding rock; in some instances the dry bulb temperature of the compressed air as it issued from the end of the air hose was higher than the rock temperature or the dry bulb temperature of the surrounding air."

"The art of treating ores by the chloride volatilization process is still in the experimental stage. The process has not been sufficiently developed along chemical and metallurgical lines to state definitely just what place it will occupy in the metallurgical industry. The theory upon which the process operates has received the attention of prominent metallurgists for the past twenty years, and research and experimental work has been conducted by many investigators.Much of the experimental work done has never been published, and it seems that the accumulation of such results if made known would be an important aid to the further development of the process. The object of this paper is, therefore, to bring salient features of the process to the attention of the metallurgical industry, both for the purpose of furnishing information, and receiving from interested parties any comments which the reading of this article may suggest. A bulletin covering the work done at the Intermountain experiment station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, situated at Salt Lake City, Utah, is in course of preparation.The chloridizing roast is usually accompanied by appreciable losses due, to the volatilization of the metals as chlorides during the roast, these losses often running as high as 30 per cent, depending upon the temperature, the character of the ores and the associated gangue material. It was not until 1891 that Croasdale, (Croasdale, Stuart, Engineering and Mining Journal, Aug. 29 1903) by observing this and stack deposits from the chloridizing roast, recognized the possibility of making volatilization a major instead of a minor feature of the roast. He then made tests on a large number of tires from different, localities, the result of which showed the, general application of the process. "Trolley lines used in connection with electric haulage in mines are a source of danger and many lives have been lost by men accidentally coming in contact with the wires. Usually the wires in metal mines are sufficiently guarded to prevent men from touching them with their person or by pieces of steel which they may be carrying or their shoulders, while walking along the level. However, it is difficult to guard effectively the wires at loading chutes along the haulage ways and in spite of safe guards, chute tappers have been electrocuted through loading bars accidentally touching the trolley line.To overcome this danger the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co., at Lowell, Arizona formely used a hinged V-shaped trough made of 1-inch by 6-inch lumber, that was dropped over the wire in front of the chute, when the cars were being loaded. This arrangement interfered with the easy operation of the chute, and a cut-out device for the trolley line was devised by W. R. Gibson, chief electrician for the company. This cut-out is efficient easily constructed and roes not interfere with the operations at the chutes or with the motors operating on the same level.When the cut-out is open the electric current is carried past the gap by an insulated wire on the opposite side of the drift. A hinged board drops down over the ends of the trolley guard when the slide is open and Prevents anything touching the live wires. About ninety of these cut-outs are now in use in the mine,The levels under the scopes are timbered with drift sets placed 5 feet apart, and the loading chutes take up the space between two sets. All trolley wires in. the company's mines are carried 6 feet above the rails and guarded by two 1/2 by 6-inch boards placed on either side of the wire."

One of the refining processes to which lubricating oils are frequently subjected effects a reduction in content of paraffin wax. The actual treatment usually involves chilling and filter pressing; the most important result accomplished from a commercial point of view is lowering of the ""cold test"" of the oil. The Bureau of Mines has recently had occasion to ascertain the effect of changes in paraffin wax content upon the viscosity of oil and has conducted a series of experiments described in the present report.Object of the present investigation:The Bureau of Mines has devised and is using a method for the analysis of crude petroleum* which includes determination of the viscosities of lubricating oil distillates. The Bureau method does not provide for preliminary removal of paraffin wax, and it has seemed advisable to determine whether this omission causes any important variation from the results that would be obtained through commercial refinery processing. It was also thought that the present tests, though limited in scope, might be of some practical value in indicating the general effect of paraffin content upon one of the most important properties of lubricating oil.Experimental procedureA five-gallon sample of Pennsylvania crude petroleum was distilled at atmospheric pressure until 50 per cent of the charge had been vaporized. Two liters of the residuum was distilled at a reduced pressure of 40 mm. (absolute) and cuts were separated that came over between the temperature limits of 250° to 275° C. (462° to 527° F.) and 275° to 300° C. (527° to 572° F.). The viscosities of these fractions were determined and they were subsequently subjected to treatment that removed successive percentages of paraffin wax. Viscosity temperature curves were determined for the oil obtained after each removal of wax.
