The ternary Ni2MnGa intermetallic compound is an intelligent material which has both a ferromagnetic property and a shape memory effect (SME). The use of the shape memory alloy films for an actuator of micro-machines is very attractive because of its large recovery force. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of fabrication conditions and to clarify the relationships between these properties and fabrication conditions of the Ni-Mn-Ga films. The Ni-Mn-Ga films with a thickness of nearly 5 um were deposited with a radio-frequency magnetron sputtering apparatus using a Ni50Mn25Ga25 or Ni52Mn24Ga24 target. They were heat-treated at various temperatures between 873 and 1273 K for homogenization and ordering and then cooled in a furnace. The composition of the films depended on the sputtering power. The as-deposited films were crystalline and had columnar grains. After the heat treatment the grains widened and the grain boundary became indistinct with the increasing heat treatment temperature. The martensitic transformation temperature of the heat-treated films increased with increasing nickel content. Furthermore the effect of plastic deformation and constraint aging on SME is also investigated. After plastic deformation, the two-way SME was shown through the martensitie transformation and its reversion, The intensity of X-ray diffraction peaks from stress-induced martensitie phase was found. The constraint-aged films also showed the two-way 3ME by thermal cycling.

New method for processing of copper and nickel production feed has been developed and tested at pilot unit having 10 t/hr capacity. The process allows single-stage treatment of ore feed including that with high magnesium oxide content and resulting in the production of rich matte, high-grade matte, or moralised alloy for further leaching, as well as dump slag and off-gasses suitable for production of elemental sulphur, liquid sulphur dioxide, or sulphuric acid. Tests results and principal technical and economical parameters are presented.

Accelerometers and pressure transducers mounted in suspension components can be used to monitor the ride of haulage trucks. Presently, it is difficult to tell what caused a jolt to the truck using either pressure or acceleration data alone. When information horn a Global Positioning System is recorded at the same time as shock pressures or acceleration data, then the exact location of an event can be determined. Mine management can then determine what caused the jolt to the truck.

"The tyndalloscope is used in Europe for dust-hazard assessments in both coal and metal mines. Dust-hazard conditions can be directly evaluated by the tyndalloscope in many underground working situations, once the basic standard table or tables have been prepared from representative mine-rock samples.The tyndalloscope is excellent, in many cases, for diagnostic dust sampling during a working shift, because individual readings can be taken to within three-minute intervals. The limitations of the tyndalloscope are also discussed.The author suggests that a combination of both the tyndalloscope and gravimetric sampling methods would be an ideal match for most mine dust-hazard assessments."

Coals occurring in nature are characterized by various properties. According to Polish norms, the classification of coals taking into consideration their calorific value contains coals from type 31 (flaming coal) until type 43 (meta-anthracite). The samples of coal of type 31 were taken for investigation. To this purpose, the approximations of ash contents and density distribution functions were done for this coal type (determination of marginal distribution functions). They were the basis for application of so-called Morgenstern distribution functions to approximate the function Z=L (?), where Z is ash contents and ? - coal density. Then, the comparison between obtained results was performed and the results were statistically evaluated. They are the basis for the further research of other types of coals.

Standard petrographic profiles for many Permian seams from New South Wales and Queensland have been drawn up. The standard profiles of seams of the same age and from one or more coalfields were used to compile an idealized or type seam sequence for those coals in which more than half the seam profiles were similar to one another. Introduction The variations in crushing plant design seen during the past 30 years provide a valuable source of information and experience from which one can select the optimum arrangement for a specific requirement. The purpose of this paper is to examine some specific equipment configurations as they relate to operating efficiency, plant availability and final product size in the form of mill feed. Due to the varied ore properties, physical space limitations, size of ore body and financial resources, there is no single crushing or grinding flowsheet that is best. Since energy costs have risen dramatically during the recent past, it became obvious that significant savings are possible by selecting equipment and a circuit which offers low power requirements balanced with low wear metal and installed equipment costs. Relatively clear and measurable are the metal and maintenance costs and the ever increasing cost of energy. Metal costs in the form of crusher liners have not quite doubled in the last 20 years, while power costs have increased by a factor of four or five, depending on the region considered. Estimates made only a few years ago on the increased cost of energy are obsolete in view of the recent unstable conditions. Since power is therefore becoming the largest cost area, it behooves us to investigate potential cost saving methods in the form of lowering the KWH/Ton of crude. Crushing To reduce run-of-mine to mill feed requires reduction in a series of stages. The physical size and power requirements of a crusher capable of reducing hard rock vary depending on the application. Extended experience in most crushing plants show that a minus 19MM (3/4 in.) rod mill feed can be and is being produced in three stages of crushing. In the majority of cases, the last crushing stage is closed circuited using anywhere from 19MM (3/4 in.) to 14MM (9/16 in.) slotted openings on the sizing deck. In some copper concentrators, the mill feed is all passing 13MM (1/2 in.) using three stages of crushing and 14MM (9/16 in.) square openings on the closed circuit screens. It was felt by some that crushing to this fine size is only possible if the ore is friable and is relatively soft in comparison to the harder ores. Introduction Grinding circuits are used to reduce the particle size of ores to the size desired for beneficiation or to grind a concentrate to a size required for final marketing. Grinding and classification can be carried out using either wet or dry circuits. Most sulfide ores are ground in wet circuits using one or more stages of grinding to obtain the necessary mineral liberation to produce a final concentrate which will meet the desired criteria. Iron ores are ground in circuits applicable to the particular ore using either wet or dry grinding. Nonmetallic minerals frequently present different requirements. Barite is likely to be subjected to wet grinding before beneficiating the ore; the concentrate is dried and then dry ground to meet market particle size requirements. The one thing that most mill operators will agree to is that there is no such thing as the "best" configuration of equipment for grinding. The circuit which works well on one ore may be totally unsatisfactory for another ore body. The general trend in the industry is flow sheet simplication with fewer parallel circuits instead of multiple-line circuits using small mills. This change in philosophy has been brought about by the saving of both capital and operating costs that may be possible with larger equipment. Remember that comminution is basically a very inefficient process, and that the costs can range upwards to 50% of the total milling costs. It, therefore, behooves the mill operator to carefully design his grinding and classification circuits. He must ascertain the optimal economic particle size for beneficiation and then make certain he has achieved the best balance between capital and operating costs to achieve the desired mesh of grind. Equipment Grinding circuits consist of one or more pieces of equipment to grind the solids. Generally, these circuits include one or more grinding mills, classification equipment, and the necessary materials handling equipment such as pumps, pipelines, and conveyors. There are many different types of equipment available which are used to grind and classify ores and minerals. Following is a tabulation of most of the equipment used for wet and/or dry grinding.

A summary of this kind presents an opportunity for making a classification of metal powder products into several general types. Our present knowledge of the finer and more abstract aspects of many of the principles involved in metal powder technique is extremely limited. Any conclusions as to the ultimate value of the process will, therefore, for the present at least, be of doubtful value unless they are substantiated by its products. The number of such products is increasing. A study of their diverse and unusual characteristics; an examination of the methods by which they are made, and a consideration of the reactions that take place during their fabrication, in so far as we can define them, should afford as good an evaluation of this interesting development as it is possible to make at this time. A critical study of this kind results in a formidable list of special attributes, which apparently ate characteristic of applied powder metallurgy. A comparison of these special effects with the end products and well defined limitations of the melting and casting process indicate that often they may very well be considered as being special advantages. They are subject, of course, to certain not as yet so well defined limitations of their own. Based on current products only, a necessarily condensed summary of the more striking special attributes of the metal powder process follows. MANIPULATION OF HIGHLY REFRACTORY METALS The powder process presents a means of manipulating highly refractory metals, which cannot be cast and formed in the usual melting and casting process. Mining operations on the Witwatersrand are conducted for the most part in rocks of highly quartzitic character. They comprise the following types: Conglomerates, grits, and quartzites, to which on the Far East Rand must be added fine-grained quartzitic shales and shales. In addition, vein quartz occurring as small veins, veinlets and fissure fillings, and igneous rocks forming dykes, must be mentioned, although they constitute only a small percentage of the rock broken. The Lepanto and Victoria epithermal deposits contain in excess of 8 Moz Au, associated with massive enargite-cemented breccia and quartz-carbonate-base metal veins, respectively. The two deposits are separated by 500 m, but the latter was not discovered until the former was nearly mined out. The sulfid assemblages of these adjacent deposits are characterized by high- and intermediate-sulfidation states, respectively. However, gold was introduced after enargite at Lepanto, associated with an assemblage that is similar to that of the Victoria ore. An even larger gold resource is present in similar to that of the Victoria ore. An even larger gold resource is present in the Far Southeast porphyry Cu-Au deposit, the top of which lies 200-400 m beneath and adjacent to these two epithermal deposits.

This paper reviews some of the factors thought to control the formation of supergene gold in the Pacific and its Rim. Discussion of these should lead to reassessment of the economic potential of many areas. In several parts of the world many gold-bearing veins display rich gold values only in the oxidized zone, whereas beneath the present (or ancient) watertable the unaltered vein commonly holds only sub-economic refractory low grade sulphides or arsenides. In the Eastern Highlands of Australia some of the most spectacular concentrations of - gold have been found at shallow depths. For example, Harper (1918) describes the Canton mine in New South Wales which was stoped over a length of 180 metres from the 45 metre level to the surface. The reef yielded gold at 300 g/t in the upper levels, but became gradually poorer at depth. Present geologists of N.S.W. Geol. Survey, G.R. Mcllveen and B.P.J. Stevens, believe that many similar Australian enrichments were formed between the surface and its ancient water table level during the extended period of weathering in the Eocene or pre-Eocene. They concede, however, that further supergene movement of gold may have occurred since the early Tertiary. Large quantities of Mesozoic supergene gold of extreme fineness (Au 99.7%, Cu +òFe 0.3%; Leibius 1885) was found at Mt. Morgan near the Tropic of Capricorn in Queensland. Lower Jurassic sediments cover part of the gossan in a small depression caused by oxidation and collapse of the Main Pipe, thus showing that the supergene gold is pre-Lower Jurassic (Cornelius, 1968). Because the Lower Jurassic landscape around Mt. Morgan was mature with a surface slope of less than 10 (Playford and Cornelius, 1967), erosion would have been very slow. Moreover, once all sulphides had been removed from the ore body the Lower Jurassic environment would have reverted from highly acid to alkaline as it is at present. Accordingly, gold, goethite and 1. In the course of its investigations on the properties of coal and in rendering fuel-inspection service to other agencies of the Government, the Bureau of Mines has accumulated a comprehensive file of coal analyses that includes data on virtually every coal field of commercial importance in the United States. As knowledge of the composition of coal is potentially valuable to every user of coal, the Bureau publishes its analytical records. Before 1921 such publications contained analyses of coal from all parts of the United States; individual analyses or average analyses of a series of shipments of coal were given with the name and location of the mine producing the coal. Beginning in 1921 the analyses were published by separate States because the quantity of data had become so great. The separate papers published to date, with Bureau of Mines Technical Paper numbers, are as follows: Alabama, 347; Arkansas, 416; Colorado, 574; Illinois, 634 and 641; Indiana, 417; Iowa, 269; Kansas, 455; Kentucky, 30S; Maryland, 465; Missouri, 366; Montana, 529; New Mexico, 569; Ohio, 344; Oklahoma, 411 ; Pennsylvania (bituminous), 590; Tennessee, 356; Utah, 345; Virginia, 365; Washington, 491 and 618 (618, published in 1941, supplements 491); West Virginia, 405 and 626; and Wyoming, 484. From time to time the various papers will be revised to include later analyses and other data. The Bureau of Mines annually receives many inquiries as to the composition of coals obtained from specific localities or, conversely, as to the localities from which a given kind of coal may be obtained. This paper presents a summary, in tabular form, of the composition of commercial coal resources of the country. Specimen analyses are given exemplifying the analysis of coal mined in each coal-producing county, or, where it was feasible, coal from each bed in each county; also, ranges of analyses, within which the composition of most of the coal represented will fall, are given where there were enough analyses to permit satisfactory determination of the ranges. In addition, the degree of metamorphism from lignite toward anthracite of much of the coal is indicated by the classification by rank. This classification reveals to more experienced users of coal some of the general properties of coal, that is, whether the flame will be long or short, whether the coal will cake in the fire, and how it is likely to behave on exposure and in storage.

Understanding aquifer properties in surface mine backfill is essential for managing the groundwater flow system as well as controlling the formation and discharge of acid urine drainage. Slug tests (injection and withdrawal) performed on wells in mine spoil may yield two distinctly different response characteristics. One type of response is indicative of a porous media system. The second type of response indicates the presence of a pseudokarst system. The presence of voids or conduits in the backfill is indicated by an almost instantaneous partial recovery of the water level displacement. This rapid recovery is turbulent flow and cannot be analyzed by conventional (Darcian) methods. The turbulent flow may cause the calculated hydraulic conductivity to be less than the actual values. The slug dissipation surface area created by the voids contiguous to the test well add to the known dissipation surface area of the screened interval. This can cause the calculated hydraulic conductivity to be greater than the actual hydraulic conductivity or the aquifer to appear more permeable. Whenever analyzing data from aquifer tests in mine spoil, these potential problems must be kept in mind. In spite of the problems encountered during slug testing of spoil, the aquifer hydraulic parameters derived and the slug responses observed remain useful in the hydrologic characterization of a mine site.
