This paper presents the development of ultrasonic grinding technology for material and mineral processing. The principles underlying this new technology, as well as their implementation in two laboratory scale devices are described in detail. Ultrasonic grinding experiment results are discussed with respect to operating variables and the achieved product sizes. Special attention has been given to the electrical energy consumption of the grinder, and an attempt to compare its efficiency with tumbling mills has been made. A mechanical system capable of measuring the specific grinding energy is also described.

Experiments show that ores such as tungsten and tin, which slime excessively, can be deslimed and upgraded by ultrasonics. The method proposed depends primarily upon the stratifying and peptizing action caused when high frequency sound waves are propagated upward through ore pulp in a cylinder tube. Stratifying and peptizing are somewhat hindered by the accumulating action, which embodies additional effects of reflection and refraction.

When the zirconium pressure tube(PT) is in contact with the calandria tube(CT) in the pressurized heavy water reactor(PHWR), the temperature gradient between the inner and outer wall of the PT results in a thermal diffusion of hydrogen(deuterium) and hydride blisters are formed on the outer surface of the PT. Since Zr-2.5Nb pressure tubes have a high risk for the formation of blisters during their operation in a PHWR, there is a strong incentive to develop a method for the non-destructive detection of the blisters grown on the tube surfaces. However, because there is little mismatch in an acoustic impedance between the hydride blisters and zirconium matrix, it is not easy to distinguish the boundary between the blister and the zirconium matrix with the conventional ultrasonic methods. This study has focused on the development of an ultrasonic method to detect the hydride blisters formed on Zr-2.5Nb pressure tubes. Hydride blisters were grown on the outer surface of a Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube using a cold finger attached to steady state thermal diffusion equipment. Ultrasonic velocity ratio method as well as conventional ultrasonic parameters with an immersion technique was developed to detect small hydride blisters on the Zr-2.5Nb pressure tubes.

In lightweight metal processing such as aluminum (AI) and magnesium (Mg), metal cleanliness is a crucial process parameter for refining, part manufacturing and recycling in order to obtain high quality parts and products. In this paper, techniques for cleanliness evaluation of molten AI and Mg using ultrasonic probes with clad steel buffer rods having high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are presented. Due to the high SNR of the ultrasonic probes used, backscattered ultrasonic signals from inclusions, which may be oxide films and/or particles, in molten Mg and those from silicon carbide particles, having an average size of 50f.Ull, added in molten AI are successfully detected with reflection configurations of pulse-echo and/or pitch-catch modes at an ultrasonic frequency of 10 MHz. In addition, relative cleanliness evaluation of molten Al and Mg is demonstrated. In order to establish the procedure and to investigate the optimum system configurations for cleanliness evaluation of molten metals, particle flow simulation system using water and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) particles has been constructed. Counting the number and measuring the size distribution of the PVC particles, having an average diameter of 128um, suspended in water with the PVC volume concentrations of 5ppm and 10ppm are performed with ultrasonic pitch-catch mode. The counted numbers of particles by the presented method and system have good agreement with the calculated results with a count error of less than 10% or two counts. Based on the results obtained with water simulation experiments, the prototype system for cleanliness evaluation of molten Mg by counting and sizing inclusions has been developed. Provide an unobstructive means of measuring small changes in distance from roof to floor or from rib to rib of a mine opening and the rate of closure in order to help operators of under-ground mines detect hazardous ground conditions. Approach A small ultrasonic measurement system was developed to detect g round movement and define closure rates. How the System Works The system contains two parts: a transducer and a readout device. The small ultrasonic transducer, similar to an audio speaker diaphram, is plucked with an ultrasonic frequency every six seconds. This frequency wave is sent through the air and reflected back to the transducer off any surface at which the transducer is pointed. The amount of time needed by the ultrasonic wave to make this round trip is accurately measured using a precise oscillator / timer and is converted into a measure of distance. The accurate 6-second time interval is used to convert any subsequent changes in the reading to a rate of change in feet per minute. Two readings are then displayed alternately on the readout instrument.

Millions of mechanical anchor roof bolts are used each year for mine structural support. The benefit of this bolting depends on a number of factors including rock density, bolt length, in situ stresses, time elapsed between mining and installation, rock properties, bolt patterns, and tension (Lang, et al., 1979). Installation tension is a major determinant of support quality. Postinstallation tensions indicate both the usefulness of the individual bolts and the behavior of the reinforced rock structure. The importance of short- and long-term bolt tension measurements is well recognized, and such measurements are required by regulations (Fed. M/NM Nine Safety and Health Reg.). These regulations also take into account the difficulty of practical tension measurements. Only a statistical sample of the bolts installed is required to be measured using current torque wrench technology. Drawbacks to this practice are that the anchorage is disturbed and perhaps weakened, accuracy is limited by friction to about 30% (Lang, et al, 1979, and Barry, et al., 1956), and the procedure is relatively time intensive.

Roof bolts are the primary means of supplemental support in coal mines and are widely used in other mines. Presently, post installation loads are measured infrequently on only about 10% of the bolts by using standard torque wrenches that limit accuracy to about ± 30%. Because mine roof bolts are long, slender, non-uniformly sized, roughly forged, placed in a difficult environment, and subject to severe bending on installation, researchers have been unable to use ultrasonic reflection techniques to measure strain. A complete measurement system has now been assembled by the US Bureau of Mines, Denver Research Center. Obstacles such as bolt preparation, transducer mounting, reliable reflection, and calibration have been dealt with. The seemingly simple concept of measuring the time of flight of an ultrasonic pulse to a reflector is actually complex due to the need to measure to 0.0025 mm (0.0001 in.) accuracy, the sensitivity of velocity to temperature, and stress, and the stability required to make measurements over several years.

A microcrack process zone is frequently suggested to accompany macrofractures in rock and play an important role in the resistance to fracture propagation. Attenuation of surface waves propagating through mode I fractures in wedge-loaded double-cantilever beam specimens of Westerly granite has been recorded in an attempt to characterize the structure of the fracture process zone. The ultrasonic measurements do not support the generally accepted model of a macroscopic fracture that incrementally propagates with the accompaniment of a cloud of microcracks. Instead, fractures in Westerly granite appear to form as gradually separating surfaces within a zone having a width of a few millimeters and a length of several tens of millimeters. A fracture process zone of this size would necessitate the use of meter-sized specimens in order for linear elastic fracture mechanics to be applicable.

Irradiation of high energy ultrasonic vibration in metals and alloys generates oscillating strain and stress fields in solids, and introduces nonlinear effects such as cavitation, acoustic streaming, and radiation pressure in molten materials. These nonlinear effects can be utilized to assist conventional material processing processes. This article describes recent research at Oak Ridge National Labs (ORNL) and Purdue University on using high intensity ultrasonic vibrations for degassing molten aluminum, processing particulate reinforced metal matrix composites, refining metals and alloys during solidification process, welding, and producing bulk nanostructures in solid metals and alloys.

The recovery of fine coal has historically had limited success due to the intimate clay association on the surfaces of the coal particles. This clay presence has detrimentally affected conventional beneficiation techniques resulting in a recovered product containing unacceptably high concentrations of ash and moisture. An ultrasonically activated tray that operates in a continuous fashion has been developed that separates the clay film from each particle's surfaces. This separation is of sufficient duration to allow conventional beneficiation techniques to be utilized more efficiently.

The method of ultrasonic-assisted leaching was used to extract vanadium from the stone coal, with alkali as leaching reagent. The effects of ultrasonic power, concentration of alkali, reaction temperature, liquid-solid ratio and reaction time were investigated, respectively. The optimal ultrasonic leaching condition for vanadium extraction is as follows: ultrasonic power 230W, concentration of alkali 5%, liquid-solid ratio 3:1, reaction temperature 90℃ and reaction time 1h. The leaching rate of vanadium reaches 76.4% under the optimal condition, which is 12.2% higher than that of non-ultrasonic leaching. The reason on enhancing the leaching rate of vanadium by ultrasonic leaching was discussed. It is indicated that the ultrasonic cavitation can increase the surface area of mineral, which is beneficial to facilitate the reaction rate. "The effect of ultrasonication on reactions at solid/liquid interfaces was investigated by using an ultrasonic probe in two slurry systems, i.e. cyanidation of a refractory sulphide ore and geopolymerisation of metakaolinite. The surfactant dithiophosphate was used to render the gold bearing sulphide particles hydrophobic, in an attempt to induce the formation of cavitation bubbles directly at the desired surfaces. Oxygen was injected into the cyanidation system to improve the attachment of oxygen bubbles to the hydrophobic sulphide surfaces. Geopolymerisation occurs in highly alkaline solution with waste aluminosilicate oxides and silicates as the reactants. The process of geopolymerisation is believed to involve dissolution of Al-Si oxides from solid particles, diffusion of dissolved Al-Si complex from the solid surface into the gel phase, condensation of gel phase and hardening of the gel phase. It has never been investigated how ultrasonication affects the above steps in synthesising geopolymers, despite a number of papers dealing with sonochemical synthesis of materials. The introduction of power ultrasound into such slurry systems is expected to result in advanced geopolymer materials.In the cyanidation of the pyrite concentrate, the kinetics of gold extraction were significantly enhanced in the presence of ultrasound, due to the prevention of passivation and the enhanced dissolution of sulphides. Cyanide consumption was significantly reduced with ultrasonication, owing to the oxidation of soluble sulphides to sulphate, minimising the cyanide consumption by sulphides. With oxygen injection, ultrasound significantly enhanced the leaching of gold from the pyrite concentrate, as oxygen could enhance the formation of the oxidation radicals by ultrasonic cavitation. In the presence of dithiophosphate, ultrasound further improved gold leaching in the oxygen-aerated system. Dithiophosphate could selectively adsorb at gold host sulphide surfaces, and make the surfaces hydrophobic. As a result, the ultrasonication effectiveness could be enhanced through forming cavitation bubbles directly at the interfaces."

The kinetics of gold extraction were significantly enhanced and the cyanide consumption was reduced in the cyanidation of a pyrite concentrate using ultrasonication, probably due to the prevention of leaching passivation, the improvement of the dissolution of the gold host sulphides and the oxidation of soluble sulphides to sulphate. The effectiveness for ultrasonication was improved with the injection of oxygen and the addition of dithiophosphate through enhancing the formation of the oxidation radicals and selectively inducing cavitation bubbles directly at the sulphide interfaces. Ultrasonically enhanced cyanidation could render currently uneconomic deposits viable for extraction by improved cavitation efficiency with the aid of surfactants.Ultrasonication increased the compressive strength of the formed geopolymers through accelerating the dissolution of the Al-Si materials, strengthening the bonds at the solid particle/gel phase interfaces, enhancing the polycondensation process and improving the formation of semi-crystalline to crystalline phases. The use of power ultrasound will yield high-performance geopolymer materials."

Oxygen gas bubbles generate on anode during Pb electro-deposition process in PbSiF6-H2SiF6 aqueous solutions at room temperature. Cell voltage varies as the bubbles formed on the anodes surface. The bubble layer on the anode makes a voltage drop that consumes energy in the Pb process, which can be reduced by applying ultrasound on the anode. The effects of ultrasound frequency and anodic current density were investigated with ultrasound on and off, alternatively during the Pb electrode-position process. The removing of the gas bubbles were recorded in association with a drop in the cell voltage. The cell voltage can be lowered by 4% - 6% with ultrasound, which has potential for energy saving in Pb production.

"A laboratory study was carried out to determine the potential role and effect of ultrasonic irradiation in the flotation of a Sudbury copper-nickel sulphide ore. The use of ultrasound was tested separately at the pulp preconditioning, collector conditioning and flotation stages. While no significant benefits were evident in the latter two cases, ultrasonic preconditioning of pulp improved the grade-recovery performance and had the prospect of reducing reagent consumption rates. Tests were conducted on both the normal and oxidized ore samples, and several variables were investigated, including ultrasound frequency (25 kHz and 45 kHz), ultrasonic power (up to 1.6 W/cm2), duration of ultrasonic treatment (up to 60 minutes), and the intensity of pulp agitation employed during the application of ultrasound. Ultrasound frequency of 25 kHz and duration of 15 minutes yielded satisfactory results. Changes were found to occur in the temperature, pH and Eh of the pulp during ultrasonic processing. The favorable effects of ultrasound observed in this study were attributed primarily to its surface cleaning capability.INTRODUCTIONThe use of ultrasound for the surface cleaning of objects is well known. Ore flotation is based essentially on the surface properties of minerals, and hence stands to benefit from ultrasonic treatment which may help restore mineral surface characteristics that might have been lost or modified through oxidation, etc. Expected outcomes of this method of treatment include improved flotation kinetics, higher recovery, better selectivity, and savings in reagent consumption, as has been demonstrated by various researchers (Aldrich and Feng 1999, Celik 1989, Ozkan 2002, Letmathe et al. 2002, Nicol et al. 1986)."

"Water electrolysis in 0.4 mol/L NaOH solution for hydrogen generation was carried out with ultrasound introduced through the anode. It was found that the cell voltage reduced by 150-300 mV in the current range of 20 mA to 40 mA with ultrasound frequency at 25.3 kHz. The cell operation became unstable when the cell current was larger than 75 mA with ultrasound. This reduction in cell voltage was due to removal of the gas bubbles on the electrode surface, which can be directly observed in the see-through cell of water electrolysis. Ultrasound with frequency of 33.3 Hz was also tried, but no better effect was obtained. The results suggest that ultrasound assisted water electrolysis can have potential in energy savings for hydrogen production.IntroductionIn electrolytic process, the electrode that the bubbles generated on its surface usually covered a thin gas film, which can be caused an additional voltage about 0.15-0.25V[l,2], especially in aluminum electrolysis. To solve the problem, loading the ultrasound removes the gas bubbles from the electrodes, this subject had been researched in recent years. From 1995 Jilai Xue et al[3,4,5]. applied the ultrasound in aluminum electrolysis in lab. The results from Sheng-De Li et al.[6] reveals that can decrease the cell voltage and have influences about the hydrogen and oxygen's output ratio. Although there are many paper about the applying of ultrasound such as in electrolysis[5,6], deposition[7,8], plating[9,10], oxidation of salts substance on the surface of electrodes[l 1] and so on, the effect of different frequencies ultrasound hadn't been investigated deeply.We focus on the anode voltage by different frequencies ultrasound and the bubble behaviors in this paper. The environment of this experiment is in alkaline solution. Through this exploration it can offer a basis for the applying of ultrasound in electrolysis."

Cable bolts are being used more extensively by the mining industry for many different rock reinforcement applications. The configuration of these bolts has evolved over the last 20 years to meet the immediate needs of industry at the particular time. Most improvements to date have focussed on increasing the mechanical performance with little attention given to issues such as ease of handling, matching response to that of the rock mass or corrosion protection. Ultrastrand has been designed and being developed with this broad perspective in mind so that it will satisfy the ground reinforcement needs of today's and tomorrow's mining industry.Laboratory tests on Ultrastrand prototypes have confirmed that mechanical performance is superior or equivalent to Standard and Birdcage Strand respectively. Preliminary discussions have been held with an installation equipment manufacturer with a view to conducting a trial at a mine site by early-1992.

O curso de Engenharia de Minas sofreu uma expansão, juntamente com todo o ensino superior no país, por volta de 2005. O objetivo do presente estudo é avaliar as características dos cursos do país e realizar uma comparação com cursos de outros países com grande produção mineral. Foi feito um levantamento inicial a partir de informações disponíveis nos sites do MEC, INEP e das universidades. Como complemento, realizou-se um questionário com os coordenadores dos cursos de Engenharia de Minas do Brasil. Foram compilados ainda dados relativos à estrutura curricular e carga horária dos cursos de Engenharia de Minas dos EUA, Canadá, Austrália, Chile e África do Sul. Em relação à comparação das grades curriculares com os cursos de outros países, observou-se que no Brasil o curso possui uma maior cara horária de Tratamento de Minérios em detrimento da lavra. Nos demais países estudados, o foco das disciplinas é a lavra, já que nestes países a área de Tratamento de Minérios é assunto de outras Engenharias.
