7253. Arkhangelsky, A. D. Geological Results of the General Magnetometric and Gravimetric Surveys of the U.S.S.R. (in Russian). Internat. Geol. Cong., Rep. of the 17th Sess., Moscow-Leningrad, 1937, vol. 1, Moscow, 1939, pp. 241-250. Geophysical methods have been used in the U.S.S.R. to study geological problems. Such is the case of the general magnetometric and gravimetric surveys made jointly by the Main Physical Observatory, Main Office of Geodesy and Cartography, Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, and Main Office of Geophysical Prospecting. Some institutions supplied the data, others processed them. Geological interpretation was made by the author. (1) Regional magnetic anomalies in the plains of the U.S.S.R. are traceable to the folded substratum overlain by sedimentary rocks; these anomalies promise to yield data characterizing the substratum in respect to strike and depth. Anomalies in European U.S.S.R. suggest that the pre-Cambrian -substratum of the East European plateau consists of elements of different ages. In the most ancient of them, the main strike of the folding is almost latitudinal; in the younger ones, the folding is oriented in the meridian. (2) The Faye and Bouguer gravity anomalies are caused primarily by differences in the density of rocks composing the upper crust and by unknown processes producing changes of density at depth; these processes are not connected with isosiatic movements. The anomalies in the European and adjoining Asiatic U.S.S.R. promise to indicate the volume of the pre-Cambrian massif of the east-European plateau and to clarify the interrelations between the Ural, Tian-Shan, and Donetz Basin folding systems, as well as between the Dnieper-Donetz depression and the mid-European depression. - V. Mechanized dirt-moving equipment has greatly increased the scope of prospect trenching by lowering the costs and increasing the speed of such work. Where the soil covering was more than 3 or 4 feet deep, operators were quickly discouraged and abandoned surface exploration in favor of shaft sinking, drifting, or diamond drilling; wildcat trenching was seldom undertaken, even where the soil covering was thin. Although power shovels, trench diggers, and draglines are useful under special conditions, caterpillar-mounted angledozers will usually do the same type of work and have a far wider range of adaptability. They are therefore incomparably the most generally useful equipment for the purpose. Since 199 the Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a widespread search for minerals useful to the war program; this work required a great deal of pioneer exploration in areas where known outcrops were marginal or subcommercial by pre-war standards. Engineers in charge of field operations were quick to perceive the applicability of mechanized trenching on a fairly large scale, particularly in the Northwestern States, where completely exposed vein-outcrops are rare. Probably no other organization to date has done a comparable amount of angledozer prospect trenching under such a wide range of conditions. The following comments and accompanying cost tables are based on work performed chiefly in Idaho, under a variety of physical and climatic conditions. In 1925 the Park Utah Consolidated Mines Co., after several years of experimental work, installed a system for signalling from cages which has been operating efficiently and with low upkeep costs for the post 19 years. The system was adopted for a large western metal mine but was later abandoned be arse of the constantly shifting shaft alinement. Recently the system has been studied and probably will be put into service at two other large mines. One of the principal reasons wry the system has not boon adopted more widely has been the lack of adequate details both as to the desirability of having such a system and as to its construction and operation. Previous signaling, systems contained undesirable features, such as charged bare wires extending the full length of the shaft. Under the direction of O. N. Friendly, then general superintendent of the Judge Mining & Smelting Co., the present system, entailing the use of a samll current at low voltage, was gradually developed. Many of the refinements in the system wore contributed by Leonard Wilson, consulting electrical engineer, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Although for many years considerable attention has been given to devising safe and efficient methods of using explosives, with some success, relatively little has been done to provide satisfactory storage facilities for them. This was known long before the present war began, but it was emphasized during the past 30 months? inspections of explosive magazines by employees of the Bureau of Mines in administration of the Federal Explosives Act of December 26, 1941. These inspections have revealed woeful in adequacy as well as definite hazards and the urgent need for obtaining better storage facilities either by remodeling old magazines or constructing ink new ones that would afford suitable protection for the contents against theft, fire, deterioration, and detonation. The purpose of this paper is to offer suggestions and to show by sketches and drawings some of the fundamental features of suitable magazines. Type of construction and available materials differ with different; localities, but the information herein contained can be applied to most magazines, whether already constructed or the construct: on of which is planned. It is hoped that this information will be helpful and will aid persons who are trying to provide suitable storage for explosives end detonators. It is also hoped that States and cities will be made aware of the unbelievable laxity practiced in storing explosives in the United States and will take some remedial action.

As the mines get older and the active workings get Farther and farther away from the original mine openings, it becomes increasingly difficult and expensive to ventilate most coal-mines properly. At the same time, the avenues of escape for those employed underground have become so extended' as often to make it impossible for them to make their way out of the mine in the event of a fire, mine explosion, or other emergency. Where such Conditions exist, the only satisfactory solution is to make new ventilation and emergency-escape openings near the active mine workings. At most mines this would necessitate sinking shafts, which is often slow and expensive.

Advertisements and articles in technical and trade journals announce the approach of a new age, in which plastics, light metals, laminated wood, and numerous other products or byproducts will be used in the construction of automobiles, airplanes, and furniture and equipment used in our factories, offices, and homes. Undoubtedly, after the war there will be many such developments which will introduce new manufacturing methods and new hazards to challenge the safety engineer. Already we know, from experience in laboratories and pilot plants where these new products are being tested, that there will be many fire and explosion hazards to be overcome. The danger of dust explosions may be one of the principal hazards, because thetic resins and other materials used in the plastics industry, as well as metal powders, wood dust, and other finely divided substances, are capable of forming explosive mixtures in air. Heavy losses of life and property have been caused by dust explosions in flour and feed mills, starch factories, and grain elevators, and it will be well to consider the possibilities that such losses may occur in any new industry and to provide all possible safeguards against hazards. Fortunately, we have learned something about the behavior of dust explosions and know something about the ease of ignition, limits of Explosive concentration, end pressure developed. Our efforts should now be directed toward the application of this knowledge in the development of safe operating practices.

The increasing use of hydrogen fluoride (annual consumption now exceeds 500,000 pounds (1)4/) directly and its occurrence as a byproduct of the utilization of fluorine compounds in the mineral industries, especially in metallurgical processes and in the refining of petroleum products, has aroused interest in its toxicity, and a brief review of the literature, with special reference to the hazard of poisoning in the mineral industries, seems to be opportune. Recently, residents in the vicinity of aluminum plants have been complaining of injury to livestock and vegetation as well as to their own health from the gases discharged into the air during operation of the plants, hydrofluoric acid gas apparently being the offender. The comparatively recent utilization of hydrofluoric acid in the alkylation process for the production of high-octane gasoline has raised the question of the hazard of poisoning in the petroleum Industry. In addition, the use of fluorine-containing refrigerants has extended the potential al exposure outside of industry (2).

Steel and iron pipe lined with cement to protect it against corrosion has been used in the municipal water systems of the New England States since about 1870. In most recent years, the petroleum industry adopted cement-lined pipe to forestall corrosion, particularly in those areas where large quantities of corrosive brines and hydrogen sulfide are associated with the oil produced. Many of the oil companies had on hand large quantities of corroded pipe, normally disposed of as scrap, which could be cleaned, lined with cement, and returned to service. It was soon learned that after the so-called scrap pipe was lined with cement much of it could serve fully as well as new cement-lined pipe. The demand for lining used pipe with cement resulted in the establishment of several processing, plants in the Mid-Continent oil-producing area. Today six cement-lining plants serve the areas three in Oklahoma and one each in Kansas, Texas, and Illinois. All of these plants have lined large quantities of used pipe for the brine-disposal systems of western Kansas, Illinois, and east Texas and also for the operators of water-flooding projects in northeastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas, where large quantities of brine and fresh water are being injected into the oil-bearing formations as a secondary oil-recovery method. Since war demands during the past 2 years have created an acute shortage of steel, the need of reclaiming used pipe for the expansion of oil-producing operations has become more evident than ever before. Thus the new industry (about 6 years old) - lining used pipe with cement - is saving large quantities of steel at a critical time by reclaiming used pipe and preventing further- corrosion.

The problem of signaling to the hoisting engineer from the cage in a shaft mine has been given considerable thought and attention by engineers and mine operators seeking to Increase the safety and efficiency of hoisting. HISTORY R. L. Rutherford,3/ an employee of the Magma Copper Co., Superior Ariz., realizing the need for a simple and practical moving-cage signaling system, began a serious of experiments early in 1937, Available electrical moving-cage signal in operation at this date required that signal wires be installed in the shaft to make a simple, positive signal without wires, the first experiments used the pipe lines in the shaft for carrying the signal current, but these experiments were not successful.

In 1943 the Bureau of Mines began a review of trends in consumption and prices of the more important nonmetallic minerals. The first report covering building materials4/ appeared in December of that year. The present paper, which deals with chemical raw materials and fertilizers, is the second of the series. The 34 years from 1910 to 1943, for which statistics are presented herein, comprise periods of uneventful peace, unparalleled prosperity, industrial depression almost to the point of stagnation, and two wars of world proportions.

The iron-ore ranges in the Lake Superior district are the liarquette in Michigan, Menominee and Gogebic in Michigan end Wisconsin, and the Vermilion, Mesabi, and Cuvuna in Minnesota. These ranges produce about 85 percent of the iron ore mined in the United States. Accident experience in connection with this production is better than that of the regions producing the remaining 15 percent. Production and shipments vary slightly from year to year but closely approximate each other over a period of years. During the 4-year period 1940 to 1943, inclusive, 323,667,599 long tons of iron ore was shipped from the Lake Superior district.4/ Michigan and Wisconsin shipped 65,386,608 tons, or 20.2 percent of the total, and employed approximately 15,000 men; Minnesota shipped 258,280,991 tons, or 79.8 percent of the total, and employed approximately 10,000 men. The tons produced per man employed is much, greater in Minnesota than in Michigan and Wisconsin owing to the large open-cut production in Minnesota.

The past full year of war has increased greatly the demand for virtually all kinds of fuel, and the Bureau of Mines research and service facilities have been extended to meet these unprecedented requirements. Liquid fuels, such as aviation and motor gasolines, are fundamental to modern warfare. Bituminous coal and anthracite are needed, not only to servo the expanded industrial program for which coal normally is used but also to replace natural gas, wherever possible, and fuel oil in the Eastern States, New England, and the Pacific Northwest. Railroad transportation with energy derived from coal is replacing much of the motor-vehicle transportation that has been stopped or curtailed to conserve rubber. Pulverized coal hoe been sound to be a satisfactory and cheaper substitute for fuel oil in metallurgical heating furnaces. Celloidal fuel - a mixture of coal dust and oil - may offer a partial substitution for curtain coal-burning equipment. Several industrial experiments have been made with this type of fuel. The expansion of the steel industry in connection with the war program has required a corresponding increase in the production of metallurgical coke and its associated byproducts - light oil, tar, ammonium sulfate, and surplus gas. If the war is of long duration and new reserves of petroleum are not discovered, wartime trends from fuel oil to coal probably will not be reversed.

During the interval 1929-41, geophysical exploration in Russia made considerable progress, as reflected in publications. The greater part of these publications was available during the preparation of Geophysical Abstracts and Ms been abstracted in them. The rest was not received and remained unaccounted for. The production of beryllium metal and its alloys is one of the most difficult tasks in metallurgy. In this report we shall examine the progress made in this work- in the last 15 years; taking into account the outstanding publications, including; those of the patent literature, and the information obtained during our 20 years? experience with this metal. The difficulties experienced' in producing elementary beryllium derive from the physical nature as well as from the chemical behavior of the metal and its compounds. Its oxygen affinity is about the same as that of calcium and a little higher than that of magnesium. Its chlorine affinity is much lower than that of magnesium, about equal that, of manganese, and little higher than that of aluminum. The sulfur and nitrogen affinity is probably almost the same as that of calcium for these elements, and beryllium carbide is probably more stable than aluminum carbide, A14C3. The intermetallic affinity of beryllium may be given in descending order, as follows: Nickel - copper - iron. It forms eutectics with -aluminum and silicon as well as with silver. It does not alloy with magnesium and only partly with calcium. Its oxide melts at 2,570° C., but CaO and BaO form readily fusible eutectics with BeO(65).3/ No igneous solvents are known for BeO, which behaves id this regard like Mgo. The beryllium silicate is a strong compound, the aluminete much less so; however, CaO easily displaces Be in the heated mixtures. The Anhydrous chloride hydrolyzes, and it cannot be made from aqueous liquors. It sublimes at 488° C, and melts at 405° C., The fluoride, which, is very Soluble in water, hydrolyzes also, but a kind of oxyfluoride of the approximate formula 2 BeO?5 BeF2 can be made from solutions by dessication. The fluoride melts at 800° C, and boils above 1,100° C. It forms very stable double fluorides with alkalifluorides, which have very low melting points and are fairly soluble in water. They are more stable than the analogous fluosilicates and the sodium fluoaluminate cryolite.
