THE developments in construction and operation of the basic open-hearth furnace that have taken place in recent years have placed new emphasis on the vital influence played by regulation and control of the combustion system in both furnace production and furnace life. The several factors influencing flame development, such as regulation of fuel supply, air supply, air preheat, furnace draft, and furnace reversal, must be controlled closely if successful furnace performance is to be accomplished. Rugged instrumentation of distinctive design is required to supply dependable information concerning operating conditions, which is requisite to proper regulation of combustion. This chapter attempts to give a practical discussion of the various features of open-hearth practice and instrumentation related to the efficient heating of the furnace, control of temperature, and protection of the furnace structure from accidental overheating. The appended references will be helpful to readers wanting a more detailed treatment of individual topics. OPEN-HEARTH FUELS The most important open-hearth fuels are listed in Table 4-1 together with their compositions and other data useful for combustion calculations. "As open-pit operations expanded at Pine Point, hydraulic aquifer evaluation was undertaken to establish the criteria necessary for the design of a feasible dewatering system.The extreme climate of this northern location dictated that the ore zone under extraction be rendered as dry as possible to minimize freezing effects. The design and implementation of such a system necessitated detailed hydraulic evaluation, and the problems that occurred are typical of those inherent in open-pit mining operations in northern areas.The paper describes the problem solution as approached from a mine engineering point of view, with particular reference to the practical aspects of operation and installation. CHURN drilling equipment at Bagdad consists of two Bucyrus Erie 27-T model drills and one 22-T drill with gasoline engines. The drilling tools weigh approximately 1600 lb. The holes are drilled with 7-in. bits which are heated in an oil burning furnace and sharpened in an electrically powered bit sharpener. A service truck brings the bits to the drills and takes the dull bits back to the shop. The bits weigh around 250 lb. when new and are handled by drill crews without any mechanical handling device.

A common casualty of modern open-pit mine optimization is the assurance that the resulting design is actually achievable. Optimized mine plans that consider value and a bare minimum of precedence constraints do not, in general, translate into practical, operational mine designs that can be used in the field. Ultimate pits may come to a sharp point at the bottom. Schedules may require taking small parcels of material from many disparate areas of the pit in a single period, and grade control polygons may be ragged, narrow, and not minable with realistic equipment. In this paper, all of these problems are addressed by encoding these three fundamental open-pit mine optimization problems as maximum satisfiability problems. Maximum satisfiability provides a useful framework for problems that are non-linear and may guarantee the optimality that metaheuristics cannot.

Open-pit mining on the iron range has been in a stage of transition for several years from the standpoint of mechanization. The most radical change in open-pit mining methods was started in open-pit haulage in 1937 with the departure from the then standard system of locomotive and car transportation and the advent of the heavy duty truck as a replacement. The initial use of trucks was followed shortly by the first installation of a conveyor belt for open-pit ore haulage. The growth of the combination of trucks for gathering units delivering to a conveyor system for transportation out of the pit, has been rapid and this transition appears to have reached a peak in 1949 with locomotives and cars now being used in only a few of the largest open pits. One point which must be considered, if we assume that the maximum equipment change- over point has been reached, is that the largest pits have probably passed their peak of production. Future ore replacement must come from smaller pits wherein the truck conveyor system has done an outstanding job.

CHUQUICAMATA open-pit mine is capable of producing a total of 105,000 tons daily. When the sulphide plant is operating to capacity the distribution of this quantity will be approximately 30,000 tons sulphide ore, 30,000 tons oxide ore and 45,000 tons of waste. At that time the combined capacity of the oxide and sulphide plants will be about 540 million lb of copper per year. Twenty one benches have been opened to date and all are still active except the three top ones at the northeastern limit of the pit. These have been pushed back to final slope line. The pit is 8850 ft long, 3540 ft wide and 980 ft deep. Benches are not all developed to a standard height as the large development shovels used in cutting new benches have been of different size and range. At this time new benches 521 ft high are being developed with an' 11-yd shovel. Ore haulage through the greater part of the pit operation has been on down grades to the crushing plant. With the opening of bench F-4 in April 1944 the first adverse-grade ore haul was encountered. Of the total tonnage now being mined, 35 pct comes from the four benches that are below the level of the crushing plant yard. Waste had been dumped on the same or nearly the same level as the bench from which it was removed up to the opening of bench F-4. Waste from this and lower levels is hauled to the level of the crusher, yard where it must cross the flow of ore traffic to reach the only available dumping space to the east of the mine. The average ore haul is 3.13 miles one way shovel to crusher, and the average waste haul from that portion handled by railroad is 3.32 miles one way from shovel to waste dump. Waste that is being removed by truck haulage from the upper part of the -mine is hauled an average of 1 mile. Ore loaded by trucks is hauled 3/4 mile to a car loading ramp and then by rail to the crushing plant. Drilling and Blasting There are two types of development for blasting being used: One for opening new benches and the other for bank shooting. The former consists of 9a in. diam churn-drill holes drilled 11.8 ft center to center in rows 10.2 ft apart with the holes staggered in the rows thus giving an equilateral-triangle pattern of 11.8 ft on a side. After the first block, 492 ft long by 71.5 ft wide, is shot in the pattern described above, the cut is advanced by smaller shots consisting of four rows of holes spaced 23 ft center to center with the rows 23 ft apart. These shots are fired in conjunction with side shots in which the holes are drilled 33 ft center to center and 29.5 ft back from the toe, thus squaring up the bank for subsequent shooting. THE DEVELOPMENT by the Iron Ore Company of Canada of the Quebec-Labrador mining project, which eventually led to 'Iron Ore in 1954', involved, from the start, several distinct undertakings. Among them, the most important were: The construction of a 360-mile railway, linking Knob Lake with Seven Islands. The erection of a railway terminal, and harbour facilities, at Seven Islands itself. The building of an entire townsite at Schefferville (formerly Knob Lake) The construction of two hydroelectric plants; and, finally, The development of a sufficient number of orebodies to enable a production of 10 to 15 million tons of ore a year. Since these phases of the project have already been the subject of previous discussions, this paper will not elaborate further on them but will rather concern itself with a brief outline of the Company's current mining practices.

Lightning has been observed in dust clouds following open-pit blasting. It is proposed that the occurrence of this phenomenon is related to the physical composition and characterization of the mineral fines that comprise the bulk of the dust cloud. Silicate minerals, which are susceptible to fine fracturing during blasting, generate the initial charge. This is further enhanced by collisions and friction during the turbulent upcast in the post-blast dust cloud. Varying size fractions result in different rates at which these particles drop out of suspension and create a secondary temperature gradient. This results in the creation of two charged zones and increases the potential of developing a discharge in the form of lightning. The ideal prevailing meteorological conditions need to be windless to minimize the effect of particle dissipation and have sufficient moisture toenhance the potential of generating lightning.

Most mines are large producing 0-25 mmt annually. The coal is mine.) at depths ranging from .0-150 m 120-500 ft mining at 300 m .(,1000 ft) depth is anticipated in the future. Single and multiple seams ranging from 3-12 m 10-40 ft) in thickness are mined. Most overburden is unconsolidated and consists of sands, and sandy or silty clays. The stripping ratio (volume of overburden to volume of coal mined) varies from 3-L. The overburden and coal is mined in benches 8-12 m -(24-40ft) high; the high-wall angle is about 45 degrees. Bucket wheel and bucket chain excavators are commonly utilized for overburden and coal removal, Some of the large overburden stripping machines nave capacities. Ranging from 4400-10,000 bank cu ( 6000-14,000 BC) per hour. The overburden from the upper benches is transported around the pit using the trains and belt conveyors. It is deposited in the spoils using large stacker-conveyor systems capable of handling 2550-7300 cu m/hour (7500-10,000 cu yds/hour). The overburden from the bottom two or three benches is transported across the pit using the conveyor bridges which are computer controlled. Conveyor bridges capable of handling overburden up to 60 m (200 ft) high are currently in use; a 60 a (20e ft) high conveyor bridge has a capacity of 85 x 10 cu ( 118 x 10 cu yd) annually. The coal is loaded in the trains directly and shipped to power plants or coke oven plants.

Mining is a global industry. The conference is a good example of this, as itÆs jointly organised by professional associations from Canada, Australia and South Africa, and has attracted speakers and delegates from around the world. I commend the organisers for their initiative. I am pleased to be asked to participate in this panel û although I would hasten to add I see myself as perhaps an informed observer rather than an expert. It wonÆt be news to most in this room that AustraliaÆs mining sector is booming. As one of the most productive and diversified mineral regions in the world, this activity is also something that has not escaped the attention of CanadaÆs largest mining companies! This means that I follow what is happening in the industry and more specifically what might be occurring here. Two-way investment between Canada and Australia stood at $9.8 billion in 2005 with Canada as the seventh largest overall investor in Australia with $8.22 billion in investments. The majority of this investment is by Canadian minerals and metals companies. In recognition of the importance of Canadian investment in this sector in Australia, I maintain close contact with our companies. By way of example, in the past two months I spent a week in Western Australia visiting Perth and meeting with companies for example, like Teck Cominco and LionOre as well as seeing various Barrick Gold operations in Kalgoorlie. I attended the opening of AlcanÆs new Asia Pacific Headquarters in Brisbane in August and just two weeks ago was in Cowal, NSW for the opening of BarrickÆs new mine there. Having met with BHP Billiton in Vancouver, IÆm equally aware of active Australian mining interests in Canada. This is not designed to indicate how active I am but rather to demonstrate the dynamism in the mining industry and the diversity of Canadian mining interests in this country and Australian interests in Canada.

The basic principles of mineral valuation were recognised and propounded at the beginning of this century and have remained virtually unchanged since then. Valuation is seen as a two part process commencing with a technical examination of the mineral property followed by a manipulation of the results of the technical examination in order to determine the monetary value of the project. A thorough and competent technical examination was seen then and remains now as the essential but not sufficient foundation for reliable valuation. All authors stressed the need to maintain the integrity of the data base and to ensure adequate coverage of all relevant aspects. The monetary valuation process through most of the first half of this century was mainly based on the Hoskold two rate method, derived from the formulae for valuing annuities but modified to provide explicitly for recovery of capital. Though the basic principles of valuation have not changed significantly, the means of implementing the components of the technical examination, the styles of deposits being evaluated and the mechanisms of monetary valuation have changed dramatically. On behalf of my agency, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, I would like to add my appreciation that all of you could be here today. Previous dust symposia over the years have proved the value of close cooperation among universities, government agencies, and professional societies in advancing knowledge of dust research and development in the interest of miners and the industry. I'll just comment briefly on MSHA's part of the overall effort by all parties to control miners' exposure to respirable coal dust and other airborne dusts. As you know, our agency's congressional mandate is to do what is necessary to assure that miners will have safe and healthful workplaces. In the area of coal mine health, this has meant joining with the mining community in a continuous campaign to keep respirable dust and quartz levels below applicable standards to prevent or reduce disabling coal workers' pneumoconiosis and silicosis arising from excessive exposure to respirable quartz. Currently, our agency is processing about 120,000 coal dust samples taken by MSHA and company people during the year and about 8,000 samples taken from metal and nonmetal mining operations. Our dust program, like other MSHA programs, has benefited from increased computerization of records. The attack on CWP has had the highest priority of government and industry. The goal has been to sharply reduce social costs of suffering victims and their families as well as the associated future payments under the black lung benefits program. During the 1989 fiscal year, about 104,000 former miners received about one and a half billion dollars in benefits. Since the program began, nearly 25 billion dollars have been paid out. Much progress has been made in lowering dust levels in coal mines since the standard of two milligrams per meter of air was established in 1972. Before that time, there was a 4-to-10-percent probability of a miner developing coal workers' pneumoconiosis at typical pre-1972 exposure levels. However, under the maximum respirable dust levels allowed today, this probability has been reduced to about 1 percent. Since average dust levels are lower today, we can expect fewer miners to develop CWP in the future. Out goal continues to be elimination of both coal workers' pneumoconiosis and silicosis in both coal and nonmetal mining. In 1985, MSHA revised its coal mine quartz policy to allow mine operators to submit dust samples used in setting the quartz standard. Previously, only single MSHA samples were used. Even though less than half of the mine operators have taken advantage of this change, it has provided a larger population of samples for analysis then before. Also the policy allows operations that are on a reduced quartz standard to have the standard reviewed every six months. In underground coal mining, the job of roof bolter typically has higher than normal exposures to quartz. About 45 percent of respirable dust samples from roof bolting operations contain more than 5 percent quartz and therefore are put on a reduced quartz standard. One objective of the policy revision was to improve miners' health by follow-up monitoring, and this is being done with roof bolting jobs. MSHA studies of surface coal mining operations have provided data showing that bulldozer operators and highwall rotary drill operators often have high exposure to quartz dust, and our agency is directing enforcement efforts to reducing this hazard. The U.S. Bureau of Mines develops technology to help ensure that the Nation has an adequate and dependable. supply of minerals at reasonable economic, human, and environmental cost. Our research programs seek improvements for almost every aspect of the mineral production cycle--from evaluating the availability of minerals, removing the ore from the earth, to enhancing the performance of mineral materials. The health and safety of the men and women who work in the Nation's mines and minerals processing plants and the environmental impact of mining and mineral processing are major Bureau research concerns. In recent years, the U.S. mineral industry has found it increasingly difficult to compete for a share of world markets. Many foreign producers benefit from lower production costs and higher grade deposits. Some foreign governments subsidize their mineral industries and impose fewer restrictions with respect to environmental controls and health and safety regulations. If the United States is to compete in world mineral markets, innovative technology must be found to lower the cost of recovering and processing minerals. Mining and mineral processing research by the Bureau identifies ways to help the country maintain a sound, competitive industry and a dependable mineral supply, so vital to economic growth and the national security. This work includes efforts to improve existing techniques and procedures; but more and more of the Bureau's resources are being focused on long-term, high-risk research directed at developing new approaches to mining and mineral activities--approaches like in situ mining. Bureau scientists are studying the mining applications of computer assisted mining and investigating a variety of "high tech" approaches to extractive metallurgy. Such cutting-edge research will be necessary if major advances in health and safety, environmental quality, strategic and critical minerals availability, and overall U.S. competitiveness are to be achieved. It is just such high-risk research that the industry cannot afford to conduct itself, but--in the long run--cannot afford to be without. It is this type of research that will help us arrive at a revolutionary breakthrough rather than small incremental changes in health and safety technology as well as recovery methods. Our mining and mineral processing research is also directed at reducing the Nation's dependence on imports of minerals that have key defense and industrial uses. Some of these strategic and critical minerals are particularly vulnerable to supply disruptions. We are working on technologies that would allow the United States to take advantage of domestic sources of these minerals--sources consisting primarily of deep or low-grade ores, ores with complex mineralogy we do not yet know how to process, and small deposits that are now uneconomical to mine and process. Other research activities focus on ways to reduce the Nation"s consumption of key minerals and increase the recycling of these minerals. The opportunities in this area include coal. The current middle eastern crisis reinforces the need for a stable energy supply--preferably a domestic supply. The extensive reserves of coal in this country are well documented. Perhaps what is not as well recognized is the impact that the price of coal can have on its competitive position both for domestic fuel selection considerations as well as for the ability of this country to compete in the coal export market. Today, the role to the United States is as a reliable, but high-cost exporter of high-quality coal. U.S. export coal competes with supplies from other major suppliers, including Australia, Canada, Poland. If U.S. mining costs were lowered by at least $8 per ton in the year 2000, then coal exports would surge by a projected 46 percent, and U.S steam coal displaces significant quantities of foreign coal imports in Europe. Substantial schedule advantages can be made on projects if cross-passage construction can occur at the same time as tunnel boring machine (TBM) operation with little or no impact on TBM logistics. However, this approach can prove difficult to achieve with many of the more cost-effective means of supporting the segmental lining during cross-passage break-out. This paper discusses the constraints and shortcomings of conventional approaches, and describes how a cost-effective solution involving a shotcrete shell and opening constructed inside the segmental lining was designed and constructed to deliver cost and time savings on Seattle University Link contract U220.The paper explains the spatial and schedule constraints on the TBM tunnelling and cross-passage construction, and how a shotcrete solution was arrived at in preference to traditional approaches. As the solution was novel the design had to be robust, and the paper explains how this was achieved through a combination of 3D finite element modelling and closed form solutions. Following a description of the trials to verify that the structure could be demolished post-cross-passage completion, the paper describes how the shell solution was constructed, used and demolished safely to leave the lining surface in a clean and undamaged state fit for tunnel operation.CITATION:Harding, A, Chappell, M, Burdick, M and Krulc, M, 2014. Deliberative mapping is a method of public engagement designed to bring citizens and specialists together to inform policy decisions in conflict-laden areas of science and technology (Stirling and Davies 2004a). Citizens and specialists participate in the process both separately and together. A deliberative mapping study was held in Regina, Saskatchewan in October and November of 2019. Participants in the study assessed options for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in small, remote or off-grid communities, including assessing the role of small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) in climate change mitigation. Deliberative mapping is designed to facilitate direct, two-way conversations between citizens and specialists through both formal and informal discussions. The relationship building component of this process may increase trust. Public consultation processes that lack two-way dialogue or are seen as obligatory rather than meaningful can worsen public opposition or lead to negative public perceptions. Public education alone is not enough to change public opinion. Providing people with more information on topics they already hold opinions on can work to reaffirm previously held biases, but building relationships can provide new pathways to overcome divisions and turn close-mindedness into open-mindedness.

This section is unique to the Handbook in that it is the only section that deals with underground excavations for nonmining purposes. The editors were of the opinion that the section should be incorporated because the subject matter covered by the chapters is closely related to mining, and many mining engineers are currently involved in these activities. As we enter the decade of the 1990s activities in this category will increase, enhancing the relevance and utility of the material discussed. As the population increases, especially in metropolitan areas, the necessity to go underground will be greater. At the present time, not only are subsurface shopping malls and pedways connecting buildings becoming commonplace, but structures as diverse as the Civil and Mining Engineering Building on the University of Minnesota campus, a road-and-fleet maintenance facility in Multnomah County, OR, and even an ice cream parlor (Dairy Queen) in northern Wisconsin have been constructed underground. Placing utilities below the surface has numerous advantages and is now customary. Rapid transit and highways through tunnels in urban areas have been the norm for many years, but subterranean stormwater reservoirs, power plants, industrial warehouses, and food storage silos are relatively new innovations. The philosophy of underground defense installations is ancient, but their requirements and designs have trans-formed radically as technology advances. The use of under-ground space for disposition of wastes is modern, since it is recently that environmental concerns and waste disposal costs have assumed increased significance.

The publication of the Lerchs Grossmann paper in 1965 outlining a threedimensional graph algorithm for ultimate pit definition set the standard for the mining industry regarding pit optimization. Although the algorithm provides a solution from a static standpoint (i.e., assumes instantaneous mining), it is widely used for commercial packages to generate ultimate pit limits and intermediate phases. However, the solutions delivered are presented in canned reports lacking connection to the original data, which prevents further data analysis and extended reporting. The approach presented in this paper attempts to overcome such barriers by performing openpit optimization through databases. An adaptation of the Lerchs Grossmann graph algorithm is used to generate nodes, arcs and tree structures in customized tables to determine the maximum closure of a graph.

Much has been written and many discussions held on the virtues (and evils?) of a Company-owned motor fleet. Almost invariably these dialogues take a generalized form and thereby lose something since the individual circumstances, geography and philosophy - particularly in diverse industries, is never quite the same. In considering the nature of my remarks today, I felt a departure from the general approach might be in order, and in lieu of that, will attempt to present a concise picture of how we in the Lehigh Portland Cement Company view this problem and the steps we have taken in our efforts to solve it. At the outset a word may be in order about the Lehigh Company itself, what we do, and the problems that confront us specifically as well as the cement industry at large. We are primarily a manufacturer of portland cement operating 10 plants with a total annual capacity of about 23,000,000 barrels. We market this material in 30 states, shipping both from the plants directly as well as through a system of 18 distribution terminals. About 150,000 truckloads of cement are shipped to customers each year.
