THE enrichment of mineral-veins as a result of the migration of material from an upper oxidized or disintegrated part of a vein to a lower level, where it is redeposited, is now, I believe, quite generally accepted as one explanation of the occurrence of bonanzas in gold- and silver-veins, as well as that of bodies of high-grade ores in cupriferous deposits.* Vogt has called attention to the fact that there are numerous examples of such rich shoots which are " of exclusively primary character, and dependent upon the laws which governed the original ore-deposition." To this I would add that there are also other examples which are neither of primary origin nor clue to descending waters, but result from a reopening of the veins and their penetration by ascending heated waters whose metallic contents are deposited by reaction with the primary pyrite (and possibly other minerals), forming "secondary" enrichments. My studies of the copper-veins of Butte, Montana, show: That the veins there are of several ages and systems; that the older primary quartz-pyrite veins were reopened by later movements, correlated with a period of volcanic activity; and that they were penetrated by hot alkaline waters carrying copper and arsenic in solution, which were deposited presumably by reaction with the pyrite of the original vein. The enormous development of the Butte deposits, attendant upon the extraction of nearly 10,000 tons of ore a day, has revealed many facts concerning the nature and distribution of the ores. Enargite, the copper sulpharsenate, formerly a relatively rare mineral, is now found to be the chief ore of some veins,

Introduction. WALTER RENTON INGALLS recently gave a very interesting talk before the student mining society of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In it he showed the present status of mining as he sees it. In the talk he explained that, while discoveries of great mining districts are still possible, they are being made less and less often; that the great mining companies, although there are large numbers of mines offered for sale, are finding it less and less possible to find new mines that are up to the standard of richness that they wish for purchase. The natural conclusion is that better, cheaper, and more efficient methods of mining, concentrating, and smelting are needed if the lower-grade mines are to be worked at a profit. This is true also if the high-grade mines are to yield their greatest profit. This paper deals only with the concentrating or ore-dressing problem, and gives some thoughts which point towards greater profit. In a paper on The Development of Hindered-Settling Apparatus the writer showed that there were two main lines of work that would lead to greater saving, lower tailing assay, and, therefore, greater profit. The first is the recrushing of middling or tailing products for the saving of the contained values. This is well understood and largely carried out in existing mills. The second is the saving of fine free mineral at the first opportunity. This is a matter less well understood in the mills, and to dwell upon this the present paper is written.

"THE OBJECT of these notes is to initiate a discussion among the members of our Institution on the connotation of the term 'ore', and to arrive, if possible, at an acceptable definition of the term in the light of its current use by our leading mining engineers, metallurgists, •and geologists.The majority of •authors of well-known modern text-books on subjects dealing with mineral deposits define 'ore' in words which convey the meaning that it is an aggregate of minerals from which one or more metals can, under favourable conditions, be extracted profitably.Many eminent members of the Institution, and of mining and metallurgical institutions in other countries, consider that the term should not be restricted to metalliferous mineral •deposits but can also be applied correctly to certain non-metallic deposits. They believe that the growth, during the twentieth century, in the industrial importance of non-metallic minerals, and the progress made in the mining and the milling of deposits containing such minerals by methods similar to those used for metalliferous mineral deposits, no longer justify the academic restriction of the term to deposits worked for their metal content only."

The importance of orebody definition and optimisation in project development cannot be overstated. Inappropriate orebody definition is the single most important reason for project under performance and/or failure. Without the firm foundation of good orebody definition, the structure of a project cannot be assembled reliably. Many factors need to be considered in the process of orebody definition. These factors are well summed up in paragraph 123 of The Institute's Code and Guidelines for Assessment and Valuation of Mineral Assets and Mineral Securities (Valmin Code). The factors range from the initial geological data through assaying, geotechnical and hydrogeological factors to mining and metallurgical considerations. There are other factors which also need to be considered including marketing and environmental factors. This paper briefly reviews some of these factors and their impact on project development. Three examples are presented where one or more of these factors have had significant impact on the development of the Project.

Exploration of a coal deposit provides the data on which a range of mine plans can be developed during project feasibility. The stages of exploration use methods and procedures which initially outline the deposit with more detailed data gathering and analysis of the specific site complexities. The in situ coal resource and reserves are calculated. The mine plan is a function of the mining method chosen and can have significant impact on the recoverable reserves. Other factors which can impact on the recovery of the reserves and the ability to maintain planned production levels are those which were either undetected during exploration or were misinterpreted. Exploration programs should be detailed enough to minimise to an acceptable standard the recognised and potential risks. Past programs which explored to achieve a minimum exploration density required to satisfy measured reserve status have generally proven to be inadequate, placing reserves and production at risk.

The organisers of this function have suggested that this presentation should accomplish the following broad goals:set the technical tone for the conference to follow, implying some discussion of the æstate-of-the-artÆ of reserve estimation; and raise some current and common problems or deficiencies in our art in order to be thought provoking. As an engineer it is always easier to raise problems than to solve them with state-of-the-art. Consequently, I have had to limit the extensive list of problems that could have been discussed within this presentation. In regard to the state-of-the-art, this presentation will not be an esoteric discussion of the latest statistical estimation processes, although I intend to challenge those with skills in that area to address some of the thought provoking issues later on. The subtitle of the paper was established after reading an excerpt from æLife on the MississippiÆ by the American humorist Mark Twain in which Twain observed that the Mississippi River had become shorter during his working period on the River due to natural cut-offs and man made channels. Projecting into the future, he calculated that by now, Cairo, Missouri and New Orleans, Louisiana would become a single city with one mayor (the two cities are still separated by some 500 air miles). As a moral to this story Mark Twain observed that one can obtain: æwholesale returns of conjecture out of such a trifling investment of factÆ.

Accurate geometric models of orebodies establish the framework for reliable mineral resource estimates that provide a basis for further exploration and mine planning, as well as for financial models that ultimately determine the economic viability of a deposit. Traditional, explicit geometric modelling techniques that are utilised for resource modelling by the general mining software packages, such as MineSight«, involve manually digitising interpreted ore outlines that must be carefully linked to create valid geometric solid models. An alternative, implicit modelling method, employed by LeapfrogTM software relies on a fast method of global interpolation, which offers several advantages over traditional modelling techniques. Although previous case studies have documented the relative efficiencies of the two approaches, the accuracy of the two methods has not been previously quantified and compared. This study quantifies the accuracy of solid models created using explicit and implicit methods, and compares the differences between the models. Solid models of the Doris Hinge vein gold deposit (located in the Hope Bay district, Nunavut, Canada) are constructed from preliminary and follow-up drilling data using both modelling techniques. The accuracies of the solid models generated using preliminary drilling data are determined by measuring the 3D distance between the surface of the models and the actual contact location defined by the follow-up drilling data. Additional comparisons based on volume, cross-sectional area and surface differences were made between both phase 1 solid models and solid models constructed from phase 2 drilling information. The overall results of this study find that the MineSight« and LeapfrogTM solid model accuracies are virtually the same, and that their volume, cross-sectional area, and surface differences are comparable. This study concludes that the implicit modelling technique generates accurate solid models that can be used in place of explicit models as ore shells for resource estimation in certain circumstances.

Orepasses are a critical element in the transport of ore from the stope drawpoint to the surface ore stockpile, making them an integral part of an underground mine’s ore-handling system. Well-designed and operated orepasses improve productivity and lower operating costs over a long period of time.The Olympic Dam mine, as part of a 6 Mt/a expansion project in 1997, constructed a large network of orepasses feeding a rail haulage system to facilitate the movement of approximately 8 Mt/a to the Clark crusher and hoisting shaft. The orepass network comprises 14 orepasses and currently includes 59 individual tip points. The orepass network has been in operation for over 15 years and in excess of 110 Mt of ore has been moved through the system.Olympic Dam’s management of mine infrastructure includes a program of assessing the condition of the Clark system orepasses. A comprehensive program was initiated in 2011 and consisted of systemically performing volumetric surveys to determine the integrity of the various sections of the orepasses. The current geometrical state of the orepasses provides essential information for comparison of geotechnical and operational parameters and a baseline for understanding the key causes of orepass deterioration to assist in the planning of both usage and potential replacement options.The collection of geotechnical and operating data allowed the review of the current condition, potential longevity and associated risks with the various orepass sections. Organic agriculture is using natural materials such as degrading plant matter to replenish soils. This includes use of naturally degraded plant components such as peat, humus and weathered brown coals. Another important natural organic matter which has not been applied in agriculture thus far has been the black coal, Here we show that reversing the coal formation reaction by combined hydro-oxidation principles of biochemical engineering in natural conversion methods in an accelerated fashion. The modified coal soil additive can convert arid lands into farm lands for the future to sustain the population growth. In addition, the development of this new use of black coal will revive economically deprived areas from phasing out coal in the USA and Europe. This will show how the Stored energy in coal can be made renewable in helping plant growth under the soil to facilitate above ground photosynthesis.

"Based on the experiments, a possibility of successful processing of double-refractory gold sulphide concentrates with a high content of natural organic carbon, which has a high sorption capacity toward gold chloride complexes, has been demonstrated. The proposed approach involves deep burnout of sorption-active organic carbon in an autoclave at a higher temperature and a longer retention time. INTRODUCTION It is known that one of the reasons why gold-bearing ores and concentrates are refractory is the occurrence of fine gold in sulphides (usually in pyrite and arsenopyrite) in ores and concentrates. In addition, refractory gold-bearing ores and concentrates also contain an organic carbonaceous material, which has a sorption capacity towards gold chloride complex, making the ore or concentrate even more refractory. In pressure oxidation, metallic gold is oxidized by Fe (III) aqua-ions and complex Au(Cl)4- ions are formed at temperatures over 180°C, in the presence of chlorides contained in ores. Complex gold anion is adsorbed on the organic carbon surface and then reduced to Au0; the chloride ion is regenerated and gold, adsorbed on organic carbon microparticles, is ultimately transferred to tailings (preg-robbing). Currently, there are several suggestions how to suppress preg-robbing (Simmons, 1998, Pyke, 1999, Rees, van Deventer, 2000, Zhao Jun-wei, 2008). It can be done by reducing the organic carbon content by processing (flotation, etc.),reducing chloride ion concentration by preliminary washing of concentrates in thickeners, reducing the adsorption capacity of organic carbonaceous material by introducing some organic substances that are strongly adsorbed on its surface (blanking agents), and reducing the redox potential of the slurry liquids by introducing neutralizing agents (limestone)."

"Preliminary investigations indicate that organic lake sediments offer some potential for gold exploration within the Canadian Shield of northwestern Saskatchewan. It is also apparent that certain precautions must be taken.Gold is primarily related to the organic fraction of the lake sediments, which, although giving consistant Au contents to those sediments, may restrict the dispersion of Au within the lake itself. It may be necessary to carry out selective extractions on the lake sediments to differentiate between Au related to organic sequestration, indicative of hydromorphic and/ or chemical dispersion, and Au related to inorganics, indicative of mechanical dispersion.Lake sediments are probably only of use for very detailed exploration (i.e. every lake). One to three samples per lake should be appropriate, although a single centre-lake organic-rich sediment sample may be adequate in very small lakes. Each lake sediment sample should be analyzed at least twice and the analytical data carefully monitored and evaluated.The use of As in lake sediments as a pathfinder element for gold is applicable in the search for certain types of gold occurrences.Following detailed lake sediment sampling, basal till sampling can possibly be used to localize areas of potential gold with or without base metal mineralization."

The primary and secondary organic matter in sedimentary rocks changes markedly when it becomes heated as a consequence of thick sediment accumulation and normal geothermal gradients, high geothermal gradients, hydrothermal fluids, or igneous events. Contact zones adjacent to small igneous dikes allow sampling of a single sedimentary bed that has been exposed to temperatures in a range as great as 30-500°C. Dike-heated rocks are, therefore, good sites for research on thermal effects because variation of the original organic matter is minimal, the range of heating is great, and the history of rock heating in a dike zone is relatively well established. In rare cases, such as at the dike near Wolcott, Colorado, described in this paper, the rock samples are sufficiently unweathered to allow analysis of secondary bitumens generated by the heating. We show by optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and geochemistry the kinds of solid organic constituents in sedimen¬tary rocks and in ore deposits and the effects of heating. The primary phytoclasts that make up kerogen In sedimentary rock and in some ore deposits (pollen, resin, charcoal, humified woody remains, etc.) change in ways that are familiar to coal specialists. Progressive loss of moisture and other volatile matter yields residual kerogen that Is relatively higher in carbon and lower In oxygen and hydrogen, and has greater molecular or polymer ordering. In our contact zone examples, atomic H/C ratios of kerogen decrease from 0.8 (one case from 1.4) to 0.4, the hydrogen index from Rock-Eval pyrolysis decreases from 70 to 5, and the transformation ratio from Rock-Eval pyrolysis increases from 0.06 to 0.5 with increased heating. The visible effects of heating seen by scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy include formation of vesicles and flow structure, the development of optical anisotropy and mesophase, change of color, and increase in the refractive index, absorption, and reflectance. Some of these changes In primary organic matter are observed also in secondary organic matter, for example, in solid bitumens in sedimentary gold ores or In lead-zinc deposits. Quantification of color or absorption changes is difficult because it Is hard to make thin sections of organic matter with uniform thickness. However, natural objects with uniform thickness can be used. We show the colors of pollen In rocks from the Salton geothermal field at temperatures ranging from 100 to 300°C, and of pollen heated in laboratory bombs from 150 to 400°C. Measurement of vitrinite reflectance is a practical way to quantify thermal changes of kerogen and minerals of most sedimentary rocks because vitrinite is fairly widespread In sedimentary rocks of Devonian age and younger. For example, the reflectance of vitrinite rises from the regional level, as low as 0.4 % Ro, to more than 5% Ro adjacent to dikes that cut sedimentary rock. This is equivalent to the rank change from subbituminous coal to extreme meta-anthracite. The rise is most abrupt near thin dikes, but when the distance from the igneous contact is expressed as a ratio of dike thickness the reflectance rise is similar for all dikes. Controlled heating of vitrinite-bearing rocks In the laboratory provides a means to assign known temperatures to vitrinite-reflectance values. The derived plots of temperature In dike contact zones have the same shape and level as those predicted by heat theory, and the temperature lines extend toward dike contact temperatures that are about half those of most magmas, as expected if the intrusions did not flow past the sedimentary rock for a long time. The globular submicroscopic structure of vitrinite and Its heterogeneity, which we show by means of transmission electron microscopy, pose some problems In selecting a uniform type of vitrinite for measurement of thermal changes. At present, routine reflectance values of vitrinite dispersed in rocks have a relative uncertainty as great as 10%. Thermally caused chemical changes in the primary kerogen, especially decrease in the oxygen and hydrogen contents, lead to formation of secondary products in the contact zone. The measured changes of secondary organic products in these rocks include formation of peaks In concentration of total extractable organic matter and in hydrocarbons, and in the saturated/aromatic hydrocarbon ratio over the interval where primary organic hydrogen decreases most rapidly--then destruction or expulsion of these products at high temperatures. The odd carbon-number predominance of the C25-C31 n-alkanes In samples far from the dike disappears by about 1.3% Ro whereas the 13C: 12C ratios of the saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons increase over most of the thermal range. The saturated aromatic hydrocarbon ratio at first increases, corresponding to thermal generation of saturated hydrocarbons, then decreases in the most altered samples. One use of organic petrography, in addition to identifying organic fades or thermal alteration, is recognition of sample contamination such as the solid organic additives used in some drilling muds which may contaminate geochemical samples.

THIS short note on the probable character of the organic sulfur compounds in coal can do no more than indicate lines of research. We have no new experimental work to describe, nothing comparable in value with the careful studies of American coals by Powell and Parr1 and Yancey and Frazer.2 A study of the manner in which sulfur compounds exist in British coals (and their behavior on heat treatment) is rendered increasingly necessary by the fact that the British reserves of good coking coals of reasonably low sulfur content are fast being depleted. We believe that it is essentially by a study of the modes of formation, occurrence, and decomposition of the various types of inorganic and organic sulfur compounds in coal that it will be possible, with hope of success, to attack the problem of purifying coals, otherwise eminently suitable for coking, from these objectionable ingredients. Sulfur, so far as is at present known, does not normally occur in the free state in the coal conglomerate, but is chiefly distributed, irregularly, in three forms: 1. As primary constituents of the coal conglomerate, organic in nature and probably associated with those molecular complexes that have resulted from the degradation of the proteins of the plant tissues responsible for the formation of the coal mass. These constituents can be classed as "organic sulfur." 2. As metallic sulfides, e.g., iron pyrites. 3. As metallic sulfates, e.g., calcium sulfate and ferrous sulfate. (The occurrence of these compounds varies with the occurrence and degree of degradation of class 2.)

All pigments and extenders or fillers whether organic or inorganic fall into the following broad general classes: I. Colored II.-White III. Black IV. Metallic A pigment- is any particulate matter that is essentially insoluble and chemically unaffected by the media into which it is dispersed. According to this very broad definition, colored pigments, white pigments, fillers, extenders, and functional pigments would all be included. The particulate size range would also be quite broad ranging from very fine colloidal particles (~0.01µ) to relatively coarse particles (~100.0µ). This broad definition is usually subdivided into more practical divisions which tend to relate the classification of the pigment to its primary function in the system in which it is used. Hence, the word extender implies that its major purpose may be to extend the system.

Placer Domes? Campbell Mine, situated in northwestern Ontario, is undergoing an assessment of the efficiency of the operation which is necessitated by the low gold price and a reducing ore reserve grade. A decision has recently been taken to move away from a functional based departmental structure (underground, engineering, geology, etc.) towards a team-based system where crews, engineers, geologists and supervisors are responsible for the planning and operation of a particular area of the mine. The objective is to improve communication and understanding of the goals and achievements and to ensure a forum is available for the generation of ideas. It is intended to increase the accountability and decision-making ability of the teams in an effort to achieve the mines? safety and production targets. This paper presents a critical review of the progress of this organisational change process and its successes and failures at the time of writing.

There has been a reduction in overall workforce in the mining industry during the current downturn; a corresponding reduction in fatalities and high potential incidents (HPIs) has not been observed. The same contributing factors can be seen in the vast majority of these incidents. These include inadequate supervision and lack of adequate risk assessment. How management structures, trains and leads an operation can have a great impact on eliminating these factors and reducing the risk of fatalities and HPIs.Contractors now account for 41 per cent of full-time equivalent employees in the Queensland mining workforce, and are disproportionately represented in the majority of fatalities and HPIs. Having a clear strategy for how contractors are integrated into the workforce is crucial. This talk will include a discussion of the data as collected in the Department of Mines and Natural Resources department database, and offer solutions based on this data.CITATION:LaBranche, N and Callinan, G, 2016. THE sampling and estimating of, the orebodies in the mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., at Butte, have been made a part of the work of the geological department. The wisdom of this assignment is apparent, considering the organization of that department, the nature of, its records, and the scope of its regular work. In the first place, the district is divided into units of two or three mines each and a geologist is assigned to each group. His trips to all the working places are frequent and he follows the mining operations closely. His notes are graphic and detailed. In the office, he posts his notes on the standard maps and sections and on special maps for correlation purposes. With the approval of the chief or assistant chief geologist, he recommends development work underground and watches its progress. This gives the geological department a precise knowledge of the character of each orebody. Sampling is done by one or two samplers at each mine working under a chief sampler stationed in the geological office. The chief sampler has access to all the office maps and is in frequent consultation with the geologists; his instructions to the samplers are issued with the approval of the chief or assistant chief geologist. Not only is it important that the geologic information be used to direct the sampling but the reports of the samplers and the records kept by their chief are useful to the geologist, who needs them in his work of I estimating ore reserves and deciding on recommendations for development work. The sampler, moreover, is at the mine every day and makes a daily report, which keeps the geologist in close touch with 'the progress of development work. The sampler is attached to the mine office and thus comes under the jurisdiction of the operating department. In fact, any special orders prepared by the chief sampler are submitted to the general superintendent, after approval by the geological department. The mine foreman may.

"This chapter outlines the organization of mine/ mill complexes in Canadian mining companies. Many factors unique to the Canadian mining industry will affect the design of the organization in the future: geographic location, the size and the type of orebody, etc. Mining companies cannot choose where new operations will be located, that is dictated by the location of the orebody. New mines are seldom started near established communities. Rather, the towns usually grow up near the mines. The remoteness of most Canadian mining operations has caused severe problems in attracting and/ or retaining all levels of employees. This means that training has a high priority within each operation.Another factor affecting mine/ mill organizations is the size of the operation. Larger operations generally require more departments and increased specialization to manage equipment and manpower effectively. Thus, for mine/mill complexes, organizational charts are less standardized than in other industries. It is often necessary to organize around the work force rather than develop a chart and then acquire the trained personnel to fill the diagrammed positions.The information presented in this chapter has been derived from the responses received from a survey of Canadian mining operations.Principles of OrganizationOrganization can be defined as deployment of personnel to accomplish definite goals. In the mining industry, the major goals are typically the projected number of tons and grade of ore mined on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis. Organizing involves establishment of authority relationships with provisions for both vertical and horizontal co-ordination within the company structure. Vertical co-ordination is the delegation of responsibility and communication of goals and reporting of progress between the supervisor and subordinate. Horizontal co-ordination is communication between departments at positions of equal authority to determine methods of achieving predefined goals. The organization structure must reflect the objectives and plans of the company, and must clearly define areas of authority.Two criteria for effective organization are departmentalization and manpower planning."

"Shutdowns and breakdowns that halt the process-flow of mine production are costly. Skilled maintenance tradesmen are scarce and expensive. The cost of maintenance or of production Joss from Jack of maintenance is significant and warrants considerable managerial attention.The most appropriate maintenance policy is dependent on an economic calculation. At one end of the spectrum is the policy of avoiding all breakdowns by replacement and preventive routines before failure, such as the airlines policy. At the other end of the spectrum is the policy of minimal routines and the acceptance of a breakdown as a prelude to a repair.The complexity and cost of maintenance warrants the appointment of a maintenance manager of senior status.
