No estado do RN o êxodo da população residente na zona rural para a zona urbana ocorre de forma ainda acentuada, tendo como agravante o ciclo de secas periódicas. Outro problema do estado é a desertificação, que vem tomando proporções maiores ao longo dos anos, e em algumas regiões específicas, gera relevante preocupação ambiental, uma vez que as cerâmicas ali presentes utilizam a vegetação local como combustível nos fornos de tecnologia tradicional. Embora se tenha consciência deste problema, pouco se percebe em termos de iniciativa para saná-lo, uma vez que o setor é marcado pela baixa tecnologia empregada. Uma alternativa para a construção de residências para a população de baixo poder aquisitivo é a utilização de tijolos feitos de solo-cimento. O solo-cimento é uma mistura íntima e bem proporcionada de solo com cimento Portland, de tal modo que haja uma estabilização daquele por este, melhorando as propriedades da mistura. O tijolo feito de solo-cimento é caracterizado por um menor custo final que o tradicional e pela baixa agressão ao meio ambiente, uma vez que não é queimado. Neste trabalho foram produzidos tijolos de terra crua misturada com cimento (20% a 30%) e compactados em prensa manual. Foram realizados análises dos materiais empregados e de resistência à compressão dos tijolos produzidos. Verificou-se que o tijolo de solo-cimento possui resistência a compressão dentro das normas e facilidade de fabricação, proporcionado assim uma solução alternativa para o setor.

The novel technology of calcination to prepare triuranium octaoxide（U3O8）from ammonium uranyl carbonate in microwave fields was investigated on the basis of the temperature rising characteristics of ammonium uranyl carbonate, triuranium octaoxide (U3O8), and their mixture. The result of experiments show that ammonium uranyl carbonate had weak capability to absorb microwave energy, while triuranium octaoxide has the very strong capability to absorb microwave energy and the sample temperature increased rapidly with an increase mixture ratio of triuranium octaoxide. The optimal calcination conditions were as follows: microwave power 700 W, calcination time 10 min and 60 g in this experiments range, respectively. Under these conditions the value of total uranium and 4 U of triuranium octaoxide was 84.28% and 31.02%, respectively. It is feasible to prepare triuranium octaoxide by calcination from ammonium uranyl carbonate, which mixed with small amounts of triuranium octaoxide under microwave fields.

In this very interesting paper, Mr. Harrington mentions a considerable variety of materials suitable for use in the rock dusting of coal mines; this suggests that you may possibly be interested in same purely theoretical figures tending to show the superiority of gypsum for this purpose. Some of the gentlemen present have found difficulty in applying a thick, adherent coating of dry gypsum to the ribs and roofs of their workings, for which reason pulverized gypsum will perhaps be chiefly useful for the loading of barrier troughs. In view of the function that rock dust is expected to perform in case of a coal-dust explosion, it seems obvious that the most efficacious dust will be the one that can absorb the most heat and absorb it most rapidly. The customary rock dusting materials differ considerably in this respect, depending principally upon the facility with which they can be decomposed at the temperatures encountered in a coal-dust explosion. Such stable materials as silica, anhydrite and flue-dust vary but slightly in their heat-absorbing capacities, the specific heats of minerals in general ranging between 0.19 and 0.22; on the other hand, gypsum and limestone, as well as certain argillaceous materials such as shale, adobe, etc., are capable of absorbing additional heat through their chemical dissociation, although, as will appear later, it is questionable whether the amount of heat thus absorbed, in the case of limestone, shale, and adobe, is large enough to have any practical value. As to the temperature developed by a coal-dust explosion, the Bureau of Mines reports one test in which gold foil was melted, and others in which silver foil was melted, but not gold; hence 1832° F. (1000° C.) seems a reasonable figure to assume for purposes of calculation. Normal temperature is taken as 68° F. (20°C.). The other fundamental data required for the computations as cited by various authorities, are as follows: [Specific heats Gypsum : 0.259 Calcium sulphate, anhydrous. . .190 Limestone 0.216 Lime 0.239 Clay, shale, silica, etc. usually not exceeding 0.220 Carbon dioxide .:0.217 Steam (at atmospheric pressure)0.500 Heats of formation CaSO4+2H2O-4.606 Kg-cal. per gram molecule, or 48.2 B:t:u.' per pound of gypsum.- CaO +C0,42.5 Kg.-cal. per gram molecule, or 765 B.t.u. per pound of limestone. Latent heat of vaporization of water. from and at 100°C.. 535.9 Kg.-cal. per kilogram (964.6 B.t.u. per pound).] Computations will be based on the Fahrenheit scale and British thermal units, as probably more familiar in the coal industry. First as to the inert materials: their heat-absorbing capacity per pound is simply the product of their specific heat, say 0.22, multiplied by the assumed rise in temperature, 1764° F., or 388 B.t.u. per pound. Gypsum, CaS0, 2H.0, though apparently perfectly dry, contains 21% of combined water. When gradually heated it will have liberated three-quarters of its water freely by the time it reaches 250° F.; the remaining one-quarter is retained to a somewhat higher temperature, but the last of it will have been expelled at 482° F. Developers of advanced mining projects face the challenge of how to craft a “Request for Proposal for a Feasibility Study” that will result in bids that are comparable and will lead to a successful execution of the study. Mining engineering consulting firms are challenged by “Request for Proposals” that may consist of a limited description of the Scope of Services and other items, which could present difficulties in the subsequent financing and/or development of the project. Changes in international disclosure requirements have also changed the landscape on how resources and reserves are reported by introducing new disclosure requirements and concepts such as qualified persons. This paper lays out a strategy for preparing a Feasibility Study “Request for Proposal” based on the experiences of a mining engineering consulting firm working on a diversity of projects around the world, and in light of the recent changes in international reporting standards for reserves.

More and more, general contractors, site supervisors, owner re p resentatives, or the owners themselves want to know details about proposed drill and blast operations at their site, in advance. We are seeing more contracts that re q u i re a blasting plan to be submitted in writing. The purpose of this session is to discuss items that you might want to include and address in a written blast plan, and some ideas about how to present them. This is not intended to be a complete list of items that could be included in a blast plan. Contracts may list specific items that need to be addressed. Only a few of the more common elements will be covered here. The bro a der purpose of this discussion is to get you thinking, about what you might want to include in your own “standard ” blast plan.

The preparation of coal-water slurry fuel (CWSF) has the potential to be a commercially viable technology for the coal industry. The technology base required to prepare stable CWSF using grinding circuits has been developed over the past decade and is now being applied to the preparation of CWSF from wet coal fines which are generated during coal beneficiation. When preparing CWSF, the optimum CWSF formulation must be determined to ensure that the fuel will be stable while having acceptable atomization and combustion properties, and the production run must be monitored closely to ensure that the CWSF quality is maintained. This paper describes the CWSF formulation process, CWSF preparation circuits, and some of typical problems encountered in, and solutions to, the transportation and storage of CWSF.

Achieving occupational health and environmental noise objectives is a major consideration in the planning or operational phase of resource development and industrial projects to meet the needs of the workforce and community and comply with legislative requirements. For material handling systems, ventilation plants, mobile equipment, process plants and fixed infrastructure, noise emissions need to be considered at the design phase. The preferred approach is to provide noise emission technical specifications, but in many cases this is not stipulated. An occupational noise requirement, such as ‘not to exceed 85 dBA at 1 m’, is often provided, but this will not achieve the required occupational or environmental noise objectives and may cause overly stringent requirements when they may not be needed. It should be noted that when developing the technical specification, measuring compliance needs to be taken into account as, in some cases, measuring may be very difficult or even not possible.This paper will discuss the requirements for providing an effective noise specification that ensures the environmental and occupational noise objectives are able to be achieved and that, once installed, compliance can be measured. It discusses planning such as when to set the objective, correlating the appropriate objectives for the environmental and occupational noise requirements, allowing for measurement tolerance, providing a suitable criteria and data format for the suppliers to respond to and methodology to measure compliance. Different phases of a project require different approaches to planning for noise management and these will be discussed in the paper. Copper slag is a by-product obtained during smelting of copper from copper ores. In China, for one ton of metal production about 2.2 tons of copper slag was generated, and approximately 15 million tons slag is produced in 2013. Dumping and disposal of such huge quantities of slag will cause environmental and space problems. Most importantly, copper slag cannot be made full use of to maximize its value. In this study, copper slag was used to take the place of scrap iron and part of silica in traditional process and to produce FeSi alloy as the main material. Utilizing silica and copper slag as the raw materials and coke as the reducing agent, FeSi45 was produced in the induction furnace. In addition, the effect of different n(C)/n(O) on FeSi45 has been investigated.Increasing n(C)/n(O) is beneficial to form the stable phase of FeSi. Meanwhile, n(C)/n(O) greatly affects the reduction and recovery of silicon than iron. When n(C)/n(O) equals 1.10, the recovery of silicon and iron is about 77 and 95%, respectively.

Glencore Coal Assets Australia (GCAA) operates five coalmines in Queensland and has rehabilitated thousands of hectares of mined land across these sites. Accordingly, GCAA seeks to continually improve rehabilitation outcomes over time and work towards progressive rehabilitation sign-off. The ultimate test of rehabilitation success is the attainment of an agreed land-use target, whether for biodiversity conservation or some type of agricultural production, and the ability of the rehabilitated landscape to resist degradation and retain desired functions (eg biodiversity protection or grazing productivity). However, success must be based on documented evidence that can demonstrate adequate progress towards rehabilitation targets and is assessed at appropriate intervals. To assist this task, a stepwise decision guide for the GCAA monitoring program was developed to ensure consistent monitoring data is collected across the range of sites. This presentation will discuss some of the processes that were followed to allow GCAA to identify appropriate metrics to assess rehabilitation success efficiently over thousands of hectares.CITATION:Erskine, P, Fletcher, A and Swart, P, 2016. This paper presents the results of a large scale survey of The Australasian Institute for Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) membership. This survey aimed to understand and define the key issues and drivers that AusIMM members perceived would shape the development of the Australian minerals industry over the next 20 - 30 years. Nine hundred and fifty-nine participants rated the importance of 11 issues and six drivers (generated from interviews with AusIMM members), and 236 of these participants also provided qualitative descriptions of the future. Issues were defined as problems or opportunities for the minerals industry that may be controlled or influenced by the industry, while drivers were defined as those factors that will influence the direction of the industry that are not within the control of the industry. The quantitative data revealed that the top four issues, in order of their perceived importance to the Australian minerals industry, were: investment in exploration, workforce, health and safety, and innovation. The top three drivers in order of their perceived importance, were: economics of mining, global context and Australian society. While the top four issues were largely consistent across professional groups examined, metallurgy and mineral processing professionals rated water inputs and energy inputs significantly higher than the other professional groups. For the list of drivers, there was strong agreement regarding their ranked order of importance across the professional groups examined. Within the qualitative data, however, a single issue (technology) and a single driver (economics of mining) dominated participantsÆ descriptions of the future. These findings provide important input into a broader program of scenario development for the Australian minerals industry being undertaken by CSIRO and its partners. The results of this study demonstrate the importance of using a mixed methodology in generating these inputs to understand more fully how important stakeholders view the future and the factors that will shape it. The results of this study are also discussed with respect to the role that CSIRO may play in facilitating the exploration of uncertainty around the future of the Australian minerals industry.

The preparation of graduate talent for the mining industry is a challenging process, given the multifaceted and complex array of decisions mining engineers make in discharging their responsibilities. As leaders, mining engineers must manage operations, lead project teams, mentor junior engineers, chart the technological directions of companies and deal with several organizations for maintaining the technical and economic feasibility of operations within strategic and tactical framework. Traditionally, the completion of the bachelor of science degree curriculum, with a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA), has been used as a graduation measure by Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T). Companies have long realized the limitations of the CGPA for recruiting graduates because mining engineering is an applied engineering discipline. Company recruiters have sought to correct the limitations by factoring experience and behaviors into the selection process when recruiting knowledgeable and well-rounded graduates. In this paper, the authors introduce a new metric, which combines the current CGPA (knowledge) with experience and attribute (KEA) metrics to gauge the job readiness of graduating engineers. The KEA metric, also called the job-readiness factor (JRF), is the sum of K (50%), E (30%) and A (20%). The KEA process has been applied to a graduating class in Missouri S&T to demonstrate the value of the new metric system. The results show a fairly positive correlation between CGPA and the KEA metric, with a coefficient of determination of about 70%. Overall, the KEA metric system provides a better picture of the capacity and job readiness of graduates entering the workforce.

READERS of a technical paper, or the audience if the paper is presented orally, judge the paper on several counts. The September 1940 issue of MINING AND METALLURGY contained an excellent short article by S. Marion Tucker en- titled "Are You Going to Present a Paper," which considered the general subject of presentation. In it Dr. Tucker referred to the large number of poorly prepared and badly delivered papers that are presented annually before the large number of technical and other societies that meet regularly, and he stressed the point that good delivery, length of paper, content, and composition are of great importance. All of Dr. Tucker's points were well taken; however, good illustrations are equally important in explaining certain phases of some papers.

It is the responsibility of educators to look ahead and prepare young engineers and scientists to cope with industrial and social problems of the future. We are faced with a review of history as well as prophesy of the future. The mining industry exists in a "bubble" with little interaction or communication with the outside. This isolation must be broken down if the industry is to survive in the U.S. and Canada. The ability to communicate with the general public and public officials is essential. Many changes are occurring that will require readjustments in technology and staffing. Aging population will result in raising retirement and increasing available workforce. This may force shorter working weeks to supply additional jobs. Environmental concerns will likely direct more attention not only to these concerns during mining, but to planning for post-mining land usage. Retraining and up-dating educational programs are required to cope with these changes.

The University of Wollongong was named University of the Year 2000, for its work in preparing students for the e-world. Computer facilitated learning is being introduced into subjects throughout the engineering course. First year mining engineering students are introduced to computers, e-communication, using the UniversityÆs web based information system, and web based subject delivery. Mining engineering students in the mid-years of the course use programming languages and numerical computation software such as MATLAB, while students in the final years use a range of commercially available professional engineering software such as TALPAC. Most of these subjects are offered as part of the UniversityÆs Learning Online program, co-ordinated by its Centre for Educational Development and Interactive Resources (CEDIR). Learning Online subjects are delivered using the Web Course Tools (WebCT) environment. WebCT allows all resources to be accessed through the web, allows email communication between lecturer and student, and allows discussion groups for the exchange of ideas. Students can submit their assignments through WebCT and receive immediate feedback. This paper describes how WebCT has been used to deliver a first year engineering computing subject, mid-year numerical computation subjects, a mining economics subject and mine planning subjects.

Preparation strontium carbonate with celestite concentrate by flotation is studied by agglomeration-reduction roasting process. It is shown that, the drop strength of green pellet is greater than 4 times?(0.5m) -1 under the balling conditions of moisture of 9% and time of 18~20min. Lignin xanthate obviously improves the ballability of the celestite concentrate due to the increase of surface hydrophilicity, therefore, the balling rate is increased, as well as green ball strength. The drop strength of 7 times?(0.5m) -1 can be obtained when the lignin xanthate dosage is 0.5%~1%. Reduction roasting with anthracite shows that the SrSO4 conversion is 82%~83% for celestite concentrate pellet, under the optimal conditions of roasting temperature of 1100~1150? and time of 30min, and it is 10% higher than conversion of celestite lump under the same conditions. The strontium carbonate are prepared after roasted pellets are leached, purified and carbonated, and the SrCO3 content is higher than 97% , while the content of CaCO3 is less than 0.3%.

"INTRODUCTION This past year commodity prices continued their dip with increased volatility causing market values to slide another 16% putting increased pressure on even the largest companies to improve their free cash flow.[1] Without a recovery in commodity prices in sight, companies must find a sustainable method to improve returns in the current economic climate. In an effort to improve plant sustainability, the mineral processing industry is investing in advanced automation technologies and innovative processing methods that are both more reliable and more efficient than ever before. One such breakthrough technology is Heap Leaching (HL). This method of extraction has certain advantages over traditional metallurgical methods making previously unsustainable operations economically feasible. While HL is already seeing use in the gold and copper industries among others, recent developments may allow for the use of HL to process primary sulfide ores which make up about 80% of today’s ores.[2] For this reason, this emerging technology is poised for exciting growth. Unfortunately, as with any process change, the implementation of HL projects requires significant training on both the control system as well as the underlying process, and further, due to the complex nature of the HL process, this can be a particularly difficult task. DEMOGRAPHIC TIME BOMB Even before the implementation of these new technologies, the availability of the skilled workforce has already become a significant problem for the mining and mineral processing industries. From a survey of 912 mining professionals, Stratum International found that a mere 0.4% of senior level candidates were between the ages of 25 and 34 and a similar proportion aged over 75 years.[3] This indicates that there is both a deficiency of young skilled workers and a skilled workforce that is retiring earlier than the previous generation. Combined with data published by the US Department of Labor stating that the median age of the mining workforce is approaching 50 years old, research suggests that up to 50% of skilled mining and mineral process professionals are expected to retire in the next 5 years, leaving with their irreplaceable knowledge and experience.[4] While it is projected that the labor pool will be sufficient to fill open positions, the real question is if this young workforce will have necessary skill sets and experiences. In addition to a rapidly aging workforce and an inexperienced labor pool, a study done by the Oil and Gas Journal showed that it takes about 7 years, on average, for new workers to achieve a level of competency that permits them to assess risks and appropriately make decisions.[5] Not only is this figure is in direct conflict with the typical tenure of 5 years in one position meaning that the thinly spread skilled labor will be required to become senior staff before they are able to achieve competency in their current role, this also means that these millennials are not given the opportunity to become competent in their role before the retirement of the more experienced workforce."

The health and safety of employees, efficiency of the operating system and production are paramount goals in underground coal mining. The section foreman assumes responsibility for making his part of the total system function to meet these goals. However, section foremen often have not been prepared to assume the full range of their responsibilities upon becoming a supervisor. This discussion addresses the full range of section foreman responsibilities and concomitant authority. Management principles that must be mastered by him are presented, and performance expectations as well as criteria for their evaluation are examined. The benefits realized from effective foreman training are discussed.

THE preparation of specimens for microscopic examination from metal articles of relatively large cross-section offers no particular difficulty. It often happens, however, that articles submitted for examination are so thin that specimens satisfactory for microscopic examination can not be successfully pre- pared by the methods commonly employed when working with larger articles. Ordinarily, the preparation of metallographic specimens involves the following operations : (1) cutting the small specimens to be examined out of the larger mass of metal, (2) cleaning and electroplating, (3) mounting to furnish support during the grinding and polishing operations, (4) grinding and polishing to produce a scratch-free surface, (5) etching and drying. All of these operations must be carried out in such a manner that when the specimen is finally examined under the microscope, the structure seen is a true and well-defined representation of the structure that the larger mass of metal possesses at the place where the small specimen was removed. It is important that the deformation involved in cutting out the specimen be as slight as possible, in order that the subsequent grinding and polishing operations will completely eliminate the cold- working effects in the vicinity of the cuts. It is also important that the specimen never be allowed to attain a temperature high enough to alter its structure; the maximum permissible depends on the metal being handled. With some metals, zinc for example, consider- able care must be taken to avoid heating; with other metals, annealed steel -for example, no particular pre- cautions need be observed because there is no tendency for structural change to occur at relatively low temperatures.

The advent of Nuclear Energy has caused a phenomenal growth in the uranium mining industry. To keep abreast of this surge the mining industry has located many ore bodies, determined the best types of mining adaptable to this particular type of ore and developed a highly specialized type of operation. But, has the mining industry gone far enough in the planning? Has ?built-in? safety been included in the efficient methods of operation? Preplanning safety in the mining industry, as in all industries, takes engineering and ingenuity combined with the experience and cooperation of all concerned. A system of mining can be planned on a map and it will look good. However, when the actual mining takes place, conditions may be such that deviations from the original plans may be required because of excessive water faults or other conditions encountered. With safety we may also be required to change, to conform to the characteristics of a particular operation. People in the mining industry are well aware that loose back has killed miners each year. This condition occurred in practically all types of mines. The condition is not new to us. It is also known that explosives, haulage, machinery and conditions common to all types of mining have taken a heavy toll of human life in mining. In addition to these hazards in the uranium mines, the hazard of radon is also present, Radon is a radioactive gas liberated from ores containing radium. This gas is released into the active workings by the blasting or breaking up of the ore. Sometimes it is caused by radium contaminated water seepage from abandoned workings or from the ore body itself. Until the action of this gas on the human was known, many miners were affected. Un- less adequate precuations are taken to protect the people in these mines,, they may be exposed to this hazard, Health researchers made a study of this substance to determine how it would affect the health of the men, They also studied men who had worked in previous years, in mines known to have contained radioactive materials. All of this research contributed to the present knowledge of radon and its daughter products. It is not flammable nor explosive, but, if allowed to enter the body through the respiratory organs it can cause serious damage. Mines have been operated in the past and are still being operated, which were known to contain explosive and noxious gases, indicating that this problem can be controlled. Several states have instituted laws that make it mandatory to provide adequate ventilation and use of monitoring devices to limit radon and its daughter products to a maximum of 300 micro-microcuries per liter of air. This is considered a safe limit for sustained periods of human exposure. While the findings of research do not prove conclusively that the inhalation of excessive radon or its daugher products cause lung cancer, indications point to this as a possibility, particularly radium A and radium C1 of the daughter products. The threshold limits set by law in most uranium producing states are believed to be safe. In a few years, when tests and data now in the process of collection by interested state officials and laboratories is complete, these limits may be found to be ready for revision. Studies such as these take time. At present, the limits that are used are based upon estimates. The permissible limits of exposure to radon and daughter products include a large safety factor. It is considered that a good supply of fresh air delivered to the working places, adequate dust control, the sealing of unused or abandoned workings, the removal of mine water which is generally contaminated and a safe waiting period after blasting, will hold to a minimum the dangers from this source. There are, of course, problems accompanying each of these procedures. For example, the ventilating of untimbered raises and bringing fresh, uncontaminated air to the working places may be a problem. However, a good mining man can solve these problems as they apply in each particular operation. From the information available at the present time, the daughter products containing polonium and emitting alpha radiation, may be a health hazard. Fortunately, the half life of most of the daughter products is short, however, radium D has a half life of 22 years and presents a problem of contamination in the storage of old tailings. So we can see that failure to comply with the accepted good mining practices may have harmful effects on the health of miners. It is gratifying to note the interest in this potential hazard by the officials in the uranium ore producing states, who are making extensive studies and keeping records of the men who work in this type of mining. This all provide information necessary for preplanning safety. By contrast, little has been accomplished to control the injuries and deaths from some other factors connected with most underground mining operations. The function of a preposition is to show the relation of one thing to another; it is necessary therefore for the writer to select the preposition that indicates the particular relation, otherwise he will fail to express himself clearly.
