Crystals of native gold occur in placer-type deposits. Gold, as a pure metal, is the most malleable metal known; therefore, delicate gold crystal forms should not survive mechanical transport and concentration processes involved in placer formation. To test the hypothesis that the crystalline gold is currently forming in place, two active gold-placer operations and an unmineralized background area in Alaska were examined. At these sites, rock outcrops, soil profiles, and native vegetation were sampled. At one sampling site, the soil was panned and yielded crystalline gold, as well as the more common rounded nuggets. The plants and soils were analyzed for their major, minor, and trace-element contents, especially gold. Two procedures, one a simple demineralized water leach and the other a partial digestion with acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide, were also used to extract gold and various anions from soils. The water-extractable gold ranged from <0.02 to 15.0 ppb Au in the extracting solution. This represents as much as a 104 enrichment in gold over average river water. This extractable gold is probably available to the native vegetation. Gold concentrations in the unashed dry plants from the two placer sites ranged between 0.4 and 106 ppb compared to a background range of <1 to <4 ppb Au. The presence of dissolved organic matter in the soils is thought to be responsible for the dissolution, transportation, and precipitation of gold in these placer soils, and this process is presently active in these soil profiles.

Even though many approaches have been proposed for automated fault detection and diagnosis of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, and advanced maintenance programs, such as preventive and predictive maintenance have been applied for the systems, issuing work orders for corrective maintenance is still a reality. Currently corrective maintenance still accounts for more than 55% of all maintenance programs in average facilities in the US (DoE, 2010). Indoor air related problems are especially important among corrective maintenance work orders. This paper provides details of a case study conducted to capture the workflow that HVAC mechanics follow, their rationale in diagnosis process and the information they typically refer to while responding to indoor air related corrective maintenance work orders. The general workflow for HVAC mechanics to complete such types of work orders was summarized into 5 stages, and generic information requirements recorded from the case study were synthesized. Initial findings show two main challenges in the industry for HVAC mechanics to get access to required information, which highlights the need for a systematic approach that would enable identification of such information applicable to a given context under which a work order has been generated and provide values of required information for HVAC mechanics to do sound diagnosis through integrated data repositories.

A laboratory-scale batch extraction unit and operating procedure for studying the hot-water separation of bitumen from Athabasca tar sands are described. The extractor evolved from earlier units and has been in use by Syncrude Research for the past 10 years. By using a unit such as this, it is possible to study tar sand feed quality and the effects of chemicals on the hot-water extraction process, while process variables are held constant. Data are presented to demonstrate the importance of surfactants to the process and the interrelated role of inorganic bases and surfactants.

Flotation is the most common beneficiation route for tungsten ores, but the predominance of minerals with similar surface properties poses a real challenge. This study investigates the use of Falcon centrifugal separators for gangue minerals removal and desliming prior to flotation. A typical tungsten-bearing skarn ore (Tabuaço, Portugal) is used, containing scheelite (CaWO4) associated with dense calcium-bearing silicates (vesuvianite), fluorite, apatite and light silicates (feldspars) as gangue minerals. Two types of Falcon bowls (Falcon UF and Falcon SB) were used, prior to flotation tests with fatty acids as collectors and a combination of sodium carbonate and sodium silicate as gangue minerals depressants. This flowsheet was compared with a reverse configuration, using flotation prior to Falcon concentrator, and with a classical flowsheet, using hydrocyclone and flotation. Gravity pre-concentration and desliming with the Falcon concentrator were optimized through the design of experiments (DoE) methodology. The influences of pulp density, rotational speed, feed flowrate and fluidisation pressure (for the Falcon SB) were studied for both bowls. Results showed that the Falcon can be used as a desliming and pre-concentrating apparatus. Separation performances depend mainly on rotary speed and pulp density for the Falcon UF, whereas rotary speed and fluidisation pressure are the main parameters for the Falcon SB. With only one stage of Falcon SB, an enrichment ratio of 7.9 is obtained with a 65% WO3 recovery while 89% of apatite and fluorite are rejected, which constitutes a very good selectivity. In comparison, Falcon UF shows lower enrichment ratios, around 2.7. In terms of desliming, Falcon UF is as efficient as the hydrocyclone, while the Falcon SB is significantly more efficient. Hence, the use of Falcon SB prior to flotation improves the overall performance of the tungsten flotation route by desliming the flotation feed while pre-concentrating the scheelite. It impacts very advantageously the flotation, as most of the calcium-bearing minerals are eliminated. A Falcon SB stage prior to flotation yields a final concentrate grade of 29.7% WO3 with a recovery of only 36.8 % that should be optimized as the reagents dosages were not adapted to the pre-concentrated feed.

"Surface modification of R-Fe-N intermetallic compounds was made to improve their magnetic property and nitrogenabsorbing ability, arid high-performance resin-bonded magnets and nitrogen storage materials were developed: Surface coating for Sm2Fe11Nx by the zinc metal produced via photodecomposition of Zn(C2Hs)2 was effective to avoid the further oxidation in the molding process of the fine powders for bonded magnets and the resulting (BH)max values were improved to -186 kJm-3. Meanwhile, R2Fe17 as the mother compounds for RzFe11Nx was highly active for decomposition of NH3 molecule and subsequent nitrogen absorption as metal nitrides. Furthermore, even inert Nz molecule was dissociated on them by impregnating Ru metal and the resulting nitrogen atoms were absorbed in the crystal lattice of R2Fe17. These results demonstrated that the nitrogen storage system was established by cycling the nitrogenation and hydrogenation of RzFe11/R2Fe11Nx materials.IntroductionProcessing for rare earth metals and intermetallic compounds requires well-controlled conditions in order to avoid the oxygen contamination involved in it due to their high reactivity, as causes the serious damage for materials such as magnets, metal hydride for hydrogen storage, and so on. Rare earth-iron intermetallic compounds, R2Fe17, provide the corresponding metal nitrides (R2Fe11Nx) by heating in N2 or a mixed gas stream ofNH3-H2 [l] and, among them, Sm2Fe11N3 has been particularly noted as one of the promising materials for high-performance permanent magnets such as bonded ones [2- 6]. Usually, the nitrogenation for Sm2Fe17 is made in Nz, but it needs the much more hard conditions of reaction pressure (-10 MPa), temperature (-550°C) and time (-72 h) than the nitrogenation in the NH3-H2 mixture [l]. In the latter case, a significant amount of nitrogen can be interstitial introduced in· the R2Fe17 crystal lattice (x=-7) under the more moderate conditions than in N2 (at 0.1 MPa and -450°C for -3 h) [3-6] and then, in a similar manner as metal hydride systems [7], the excess nitrogen in RzFe1 7Nx (x>3) is reversibly desorbed by heating at a temperature around 500°C in Ar to form the RzFe11N3 compounds. This behavior of nitrogen absorption and desorption has a close relation to the sites for nitrogen in the crystal lattices."

IN the Wall Street journal for March 1, 1941, was a tabulation of the construction under way or under negotiation by thirteen iron and steel companies for a predicted increase in annual coke production of 3,165,600 tons. That even this figure was short of the mark is indicated by other plans, then being considered, for a later expansion of 2,610,000 tons additional. Considerable progress has already been made on thin program, for approximately 500 new ovens were put in operation in 1941. and well over 200 should be completed in 1942. These figures include a number of units that replace older and obsolete equipment.

Hybrid composites are fabricated by adding two reinforcements into matrix materials so that the expected excellent properties can be achieved through the combined advantages of short fibers, and different size particles (micron or submicron), which provide a high degree of design freedom. In this paper, hybrid preforms were produced with the different size reinforcement of the Al2O3 particles and short fibers. The Al-Si alloy-based hybrid composites were fabricated by preform-squeezing casting route. The structure and performance of composite materials were studied with the Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results show that the reinforcements, both particles and fibers, distribute homogeneously in the matrix materials, and the properties of composites are found to improve in comparison with the matrix Al-Si alloy.

As mechanical properties of the materials strong! y depend on grain size ( d) - Hall-Petch relationship [ 1-4], the ultrafine grained (UFG) materials offer superior mechanical properties based on the above relation.Synthesising massive nanocrystalline materials presents a challenge to basic research as well as to application-related processing efforts. Production of ultrafine gram microstructures in metals and alloys having different crystal structures but always an initially coarse microstructure using severe plastic deformation can significantly enhance the physical and mechanical properties of materials. Severe Plastic Deformation (SPD) is an efficient method to induce ultra fine grained structure in materials by deforming it to large strains. Traditional techniques for introducing deformation of higher strains, such as forging, extrusion, drawing or rolling do have the inevitable limitation on required equipments of exerting enough load or pressure to cause uniform nanometer level grain refinement."

"In 2015 in the frames of federal special-purpose program «National system of chemical and biosafety of Russian Federation (2009-2014)» Federal State Budget Educational Institution of Higher Education ""Irkutsk National Research Technical University” (further–INRTU) performed works aimed at disposal of accumulated arsenical residues at industrial site of the former Angarsk arsenical plant (AAP) processing arsenious ores from Svirsk town in Irkutsk region. The plant in 1934-1949 produced arsenic trioxide for the defence industry. Prior to starting the works on disposal of industrial pollution focus the total amount of cinders stored on 13 ha of industrial site of AAP was 156 900 tons with 1% average arsenic content. Close to the cinders there were also remains of industrial buildings and process equipment in the amount of 6 600 m3 that contained 150 tons of arsenic. Additional source of pollution at the industrial site of AAP is contaminated soil amounted to 48 000 tons. Proven reserves of gold and silver in the cinders were 6.1 and 47 g/t respectively. In 2015 the source of arsenious pollution was detoxificated according to mineral matrix technology and stored in a special landfill with separate stocking of gold-containing cinder and other arsenious residues. This technology of waste disposal specifies extraction of valuable metals from cinder in future. The similar case is with Vershino-Darasunsky settlement in Trans-Baikal Territory where the abandoned industrial site of the former arsenic plant is located in the central part of the settlement. The concentration of arsenic and valuable components can be compared to the concentration at AAP. Since 2016 the demand for removal of such industrial pollution sources is legislated due to amendments in Federal Law No. 7-FZ on environmental protection. It results in a real possibility to remove such dangerous industrial residues deposits as the one located in Vershino-Darasunsky settlement. Sulphur as an element has been used for centuries. The technique of storing, handling and transporting it in its various forms has changed through the years. Freeport Sulphur Company, a division of Freeport Minerals Company, has produced sulphur since 1912. The first storing and transporting of this product as a liquid began in 1947. Significant environmental problems occurred in the handling of solid sulphur in the late fifties and early sixties. Since the sulphur WAS produced in the liquid form and the major customers used it in the liquid form, it became obvious that a liquid transportation system was the solution. The liquid sulphur delivery eliminated the dusty and hazardous handling problems and the contamination of the sulphur by dirt, acid, moisture and other materials. The remelting by the customer to use the sulphur is thusly eliminated with a savings in energy. In addition, this change in the mode of handling permitted a broad development of new sulphur mines in the marshy coastal area of Louisiana and offshore in the Gulf of Mexico.

Novel processes are being developed to fabricate thin copper thermal wick samples of a targeted porous microstructure. Structures of desired porosity, thisckness and pore size and distribution are achieved by tayloring the incorporation of sacrificial polymer beads in to slurry precursors. The thickness of the final structure is dictated by precisely controllable slurry application methods, such as spin coating. Ina subsequent heat treatment, th epolymer components thermally decompose and the remaining copper particles sinter to form a reticulated foam. The resulting microstructures are characterized in terms of porosity, permeability and specific surface area.

Zn-27% Al was pressure infiltrated into a column of 20 micron diameter abrasive grade SiC particles to give billets with particle loading of 50 voli.une %. Some billets were heated to a temperature where they became semi-solid and diluted with liquid Zn-27% Al alloy to give billets with particle loadings of 12 and 16 volume %. Some of these billets were then extruded into wire with an area reduction of approximately 98%. Tensile properties of the as-cast billets were always inferior to those of the matrix alloys; however, the extruded composite samples showed at 37% improvement in ultimate tensile strength compared to their extruded conventional counterparts. The fracture surfaces of these samples are described.

"In-situ processes have emerged as new and promising techniques for metal matrix composite fabrication. They offer significant technical and economic advantages over conventional processing. One of the in-situ processing routes that have been used is reactive free sintering of a mixture of powder reactants. However, materials synthesised via this route are always porous because of density differences between reactants and products. An example are the porous Al/(TiB2+Ah03) MMCs obtained by heating powder mixtures of Al+ Ti02+B with Ti02 and B in stoichiometric ratios for forming TiB2• In this study, porous Al/(TiB2+Ah03) composites were further processed by hot-pressing at temperatures above 600°C. This processing cycle was designed so that the composites could be densified. Furthermore, the reaction kinetics of the in-situ processing are studied by means of DSC analysis measured at different heating rates. The activation energies of the three intermediate steps that are involved in the reactive processing for preparing AV(TiB2+Alz03) MMCs are determined to be 923 kJ/mole, 241 kJ/mole and 235 kJ/mole respectively.XRD proved that the hot-pressed products consist of Al, TiB2 and Al203- Properties of the products are assessed by microstructural characterisation (LOM, SEM and EDS), microhardness, Young's modulus and bending tests. The results show that good microstructures, elastic properties and strengths, as well as acceptable ductilities were achieved. For the composition 79.74wt% Al-15.95wt% Ti0z-4.31wt% B, after the reactive free-sintering and hot-pressing cycles, Young's modulus is 105 GPa, bending strength is 509 MPa and maximum strain is 5.0%; for composition 88.73wt% Al-8.87wt% Ti0z-2.40wt% B, they are 89 GPa, 311 MPa and 8.2% respectively. It can be seen that the properties of products can be tailored by adjusting the relative amounts of reactants in green samples. Furthermore, for comparison reasons, Al and a binary system Al-Ti02 were identically processed as the ternary systems. Their microstructures and properties were studied."

Frequently, the manufacturer finds that l:ihe fibres as he buys them are not adaptable to his plant processes, and, therefore, it is necessary for him either to contact the mine supplying the material and request a specific texture for the :fibre or to reprocess the fibre in his own plant.When the mine or mill manager is requested to change his milling equipment to produce a special grade of fibre with a specific texture, he would like to comply. However, if he began to make special fibre grades for each customer, he would be in the position of constantly rearranging his milling technique, adding more equipment, or building a new mill. In the end, his mill would he producing hundreds of different fibre grades of varying degrees of texture, which is a difficult accomplishment if he desires to maintain any quantity of production."

The Empire concentrator currently processes magnetite ore from the Empire pit which is approaching the end of its mine life. Over the past two years plant wide tests have been run to access the plant capability of processing ore from the neighboring sister Magnetite pit. The neighboring pit presents challenges to the Empire plant due to its higher feed grade, finer liberation size and higher percent silica which require additional secondary grinding and concentrating capacity to achieve concentrate grade. The processing of EAF baghouse dusts from both the specialty steel industry and low alloy producers will be reviewed. In addition, the INMETCO process has been modified so as to recover nickel, chromium and iron from many other waste materials such as pickling solutions or filter cakes, spent nickel and chromium plating baths, carbon refractories from pickling tanks, and super alloy wastes including baghouse bags. INMETCO is the only North American company presently capable of recycling nickel-cadmium batteries by high temperature metals recovery. This, along with the details of INMETCO&apos;s BDAT Test Program and results performed to pre-agreed standards with the EPA will be discussed.

Facilities at Amax Gold&apos;s Sleeper Mine process some 330 kt of high grade ore and 4100 kt of low grade ore annually to produce 6.8 t of gold and 7.8 t of silver. High grade ore is processed in a conventional milling facility employing gravity concentration, CIC and CIP unit operations for gold and silver recovery. Low grade ore is processed using heap leaching and carbon adsorption methods.. Presented are the evolution and descriptions of the Sleeper processing facilities and discussions of selected&apos; operating results.

"This paper is concerned with the problems inherent in the efficient and economical processing of the fine fractions of a coal from the Sulcis basin (Sardinia, Italy) whose characteristics are typical of low-rank coals occurring in the Mediterranean region. Three different techniques, based upon surface properties, are examined. Flotation can be very efficient from both a technical and economic point of view, provided care is taken in the modulation of the flotation pulp. Interesting results have been obtained with oil agglomeration and this method could be economically feasible. Finally, electrical separation has proven a viable technique, although it entails preliminary drying.Besides discussing the problems encountered in the experimental research, some significant results of general validity are also given. They demonstrate that cleaned products can be obtained with fairly interesting recoveries, thus opening the way to advanced research aimed at setting up the most suitable technique for industrial application. IntroductionAs a result of the oil crisis, which caused a major upset in world energy supplies, the last ten years have seen a revolution in the energy policies adopted.In particular, the status of coal, which seemed destined to decline in view of the availability of liquid fuel, has had to be re-examined. The need to meet energy demands under improved reliability conditions and controlled prices through a broader and more flexible diversification of sources of supply has evoked, especially in highly industrialized countries, a renewed interest in coal. The result has been a consistent increase in demand and production as well as investments in new mines and the reinforcement of the infrastructure.This turn of events has also lead to a re-evaluation of young low-rank coals, hitherto considered uneconomical and thus neglected, because of their low heat value. In fact these coals, which have a high ash content, may also be relatively highly contaminated with sulphur. The above drawbacks, which still today preclude the widespread use of these coals, are bound to create even greater problems in the future as increasingly restrictive environmental control imposes, without exception, recourse to cleaner fuels."

Occupational epidemiology of the nickel-producing industry has found that inhalation exposures to certain nickel-containing substances are linked to respiratory cancers and to nonmalignant respiratory endpoints. Establishing such a linkage, however, is complicated by the fact that some diseases occur long after exposure to a causal agent (i.e., some diseases have long latencies). Furthermore, most chemical agents (especially nickel substances) vary significantly in their toxicological properties and their concentrations in workplace air have varied over processing history. Because of these complications, it is critical to understand historical exposures to specific nickel substances. To assist in this effort, the author focuses on the history of smelting and its related processes at Vale Canada’s (Inco’s) Ontario operations in the first half of the 20th century.

ABSTRACT Inco’s Iron Ore Recovery Plant was operated by Inco from 1955 to 1980 near Sudbury, Ontario. As exposures to specific nickel substances have been associated with adverse respiratory endpoints it is important to understand processes giving rise to such substances. This manuscript discusses the process and equipment, the propensity for aerosol formation, and operational procedures used by Inco in roasting a pyrrhotite concentrate, reducing the nickel in the formed oxide, leaching the nickel in ammoniacal solution, purifying the resulting solution, making green or black NiO, and producing iron oxide pellets. Industrial hygiene measurements are also reported.
