"The Sä Dena Hes Joint Venture Mill was designed to process 450,000 tonnes per year of ore grading 11.3% lead and 13.2% zinc.Run of mine ore is crushed in a jaw crusher and then ground in a closed circuit SAG mill and ball mill. A standard differential float in conventional flotation cells produces quality lead and zinc concentrates. Dewatering of concentrates is achieved using high rate thickeners, lamella clarifiers and pressure filters. Process water is 100% recycle.Plant design was based on metallurgical test work performed on drill core samples. The plant is operating at better than design specifications.INTRODUCTIONSä Dena Hes Joint Venture was formed in 1989 to develop the Sa Dena Hes lead/zinc sulphide mine, located approximately 45 km north of the Town of Watson Lake, Yukon. The mine is owned by a Joint Venture partnership between the operator, Curragh Inc. (87.5%) and Hillsborough Resources Limited (12.5%).The project was completed in a record ten months, working throughout the severe Yukon winter and through an abnormally wet spring and summer. The first truckloads of concentrate were shipped from the mine on August 1, 1991.The mill currently processes 550,000 tonnes of ore per year grading 6.9% lead and 11.5% zinc. Ore is crushed in a jaw crusher and ground to 60% passing 75 microns in a closed circuit operation of one SAG mill and ball mill. Using conventional flotation cells a 150,000 tonnes of concentrate is produced in a year with lead concentrate grading 78% lead and a zinc concentrate grading 60% zinc at overall recoveries of 89% and 90% respectively.Concentrates dewatering is accomplished using high rate thickeners, clarifiers and pressure filters. The lead concentrate and zinc concentrate contain 5.4% water and 7.8% water respectively. Concentrates are trucked to Skagway, Alaska for subsequent shipping to overseas smelters."

"El presente texto señala las formas en que se presenta el sílice libre y las principales rocas constituyentes del material generador de la silicosis. En ese sentido, el ""sílice libre"" se presenta a través de tres formas: cristalizada, criptocristalina y amoría. Sus diversas variedades en forma de cuarzo son el cristal de roca, el cuarzo amatista, cuarzo rosado, amarillo, ahumado, lechoso, ferruginoso, etc. De otro lado, la presencia del cuarzo en las rocas ígneas sirve de base para su clasificación en ácidas, intermedias, básicas y ultrabásicas. Las rocas ácidas son las que contienen más de 10% de cuarzo, las intermedias menos de 10% de cuarzo y las básicas y ultrabásicas, carecen de este mineral en su esencia. Asimismo para determinar el grado de peligrosidad del polvo es necesario revisar la concentración de partículas de polvo, a través de una muestra y cuenta de los mismos. El muestreo se basa siguiendo diferentes técnicas basadas en principios fiísicos como filtración, estrellamiento, precipitación electrostática y térmica. Mientras que la cuenta de partículas se efectúa mediante un microscopio provisto de un sistema óptico standarizado y diferentes tipos de celdas (Dunn, hemacitómetro y la celda Hatch). Cabe aclarar que no es posible la comparación de peligrosidad de dos polvos, basándonos solo en el componenente sílice, sino que el tamaño de las partículas y la concentración en el ambiente, son factores a considerar para su evaluación. Entre los métodos importantes de determinación cuantitativa de sílice libre tenemos: químicos y físicos. Los primeros, utilizan la descomposición de todos los componentes de la muestra -con excepción del sílice libre-a través de un tratamiento ácido, mientras que los segundos son más precisos respecto de los polvos industriales y se realizan a través de análisis petrográfico, difracción de rayos y el método de fusión. Posteriormente, la Asociación Americana de Higienistas industriales revisa los datos encontrados en África del Sur, Australia, Inglaterra y Estados Unidos, y hace un esbozo sobre los límites de tolerancia permisibles de polvo, revelando que el polvo contenido con más de- 50% de SiO2 es equivalente a 5 MPPPC, los que tienen de 5 a 50% de SiO2 tienen 20 MPPPC, y aquellos que contienen hasta 5% deSiO2 equivale a 50 MPPPC, a diferencia de otros métodos propuestos."

Ferritas de níquel-zinco são materiais cerâmicos ferrimagnéticos com estrutura cristalina cúbica do tipo espinélio, pertencente ao grupo espacial Fd3m, sendo uma solução sólida de composição NiO, ZnO e Fe2O3. O método de polimerização de complexos tem enorme potencial para obtenção de cerâmicas magnéticas, por se tratar de um processo simples, que se origina a partir de materiais com elevado grau de pureza, o que leva à obtenção de pós com elevada homogeneidade química e elevada área superficial. Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar as características estruturais e morfológicas das ferritas Ni0,25Zn0,75Fe2O4 e NiFe2O4 obtidas através do método polimerização de complexos. A solução foi submetida a uma temperatura final de 120°C até a formação da resina, pirolisada a uma temperatura de 350°C durante 2 horas e calcinada a 500°C durante 2 horas. Os pós resultantes foram caracterizados por difração de raios X (DRX), análises térmicas (TG/ DSC) e microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Os resultados do DRX das duas composições apresentaram formação de fase majoritária ferrita. Os resultados das micrografias obtidas por MEV mostraram a formação de partículas aglomeradas com placas longitudinais para ambas composições, sendo características microestruturais importantes para aplicação magnética. O método de polimerização de complexos se apresentou como um método promissor para obtenção de pós cerâmicos de ferrita de níquel e níquel-zinco para aplicação magnética.

O presente trabalho apresenta rota não-aquosa para a obtenção de compostos sólidos e sistemas de filmes finos do tipo ABO3 (PbTiO3 e PbZrO3). Os compostos foram caracterizados por meio da técnica de difração de raios X (DRX) e teste de ângulo de contato e os filmes por espectrofotometria, elipsometria espectral e microscopia de força atômica (AFM), tendo sido depositados sobre substratos de baixo ponto de fusão por técnicas de spin-coating. Os resultados indicam a formação de nanoestruturas cristalinas e sugerem a sua utilização como atuadores ou piezoatuadores.

HOSTS of friends will rejoice that T. A. Rickard has been given honorary membership in the Institute. It might well have been done long ago, since, when one reviews distinguished services rendered by individuals to our organization and our profession, it is at once apparent that his name ranks high and that he has merited this distinction for more than three decades. Our by-laws restrict this list to twenty names; "T.A." becomes the sixteenth living member. Young engineers should particularly be pleased; Mr. Rickard has had a career rich in human interest, and full of useful suggestions to the younger men; he has given them good advice and set them a notable example; he, more than anyone else, has shown them how technical writing can be clear and concise; he has inspired youngsters to do their best; he has been their friend. No one has more first-hand knowledge of these facts than the writer of this appreciation:

THE thermocouple as a device for the measurement of temperature is rivaled only by the platinum-resistance thermometer. Both instruments are capable of the highest precision, but the thermocouple, on account of its cheapness, ease of construction, and small cross-section, is finding a continually widening field of usefulness for industrial control as well as for laboratory measurements. Formerly, the thermocouple was subject to two disadvantages: errors due to lack of homogeneity of the metal and the labor involved in the interpolation between fixed points on the temperature scale. Former publications from the Geo-physical Laboratory have described the methods' for the selection and testing of thermocouple wire and have presented standard calibration curves2 for platinum-platinrhodiun and copper-constantan couples, so that the most important objections to the thermocouple as a precision thermometer have been removed. The calibration tables published in 1914 covered the range 0-1755° for the platinum-platinrhodium couple and 0-350° for copper-constantan. It has seemed desirable to extend the table for copper-constantan to -200 and also to include a table for the Hoskins thermocouple. Accordingly, in this paper, the new tables are presented, together with a brief explanation of their use; and, finally, certain diagrams and a paragraph on "cold-junction corrections" are given. Standard Calibration Tables.-In Fig. 1, which illustrates how the electromotive force (e.m.f.) of each of the three couples varies with the temperature, the temperatures of one junction are plotted as abscissas and the corresponding thermo-e.m.f.'s as ordinates. General. Data for the operating information given in the 15 tables in this chapter was obtained from voluminous questionnaires sent to over 100 operating companies in 1972. There has been a considera¬ble change since then in supply and power costs and many companies have had expansions or revisions since that time, so it must be realized that information is valid for the year 1972. This is true except for the three new properties of Sacaton, Metcalf, and Pinto Valley. These three operations started up since 1972 and all information for them was obtained in 1975. The questionnaires were sent to all major copper properties throughout the world as well as to many smaller units and to some mines that had complex or unusual conditions. Properties for which no information is given did not submit completed questionnaires. Several operations were unable to supply information requested be¬cause of company policy prohibiting it. However, data is presented for 75 different operating properties. The reference number of the left-hand column is the same for all 15 tables of data. If the company had several operating properties as of 1972, then subsequent properties use the same number but a different letter. For example, Anaconda's property at Butte, Mont., is IA, whereas Anaconda's (now Anamax) Twin Buttes property in Arizona is IB. Table I gives general data for the properties including exact loca¬tion, milling rate, pertinent assay values and recoveries, and a brief listing of ore and gangue minerals. It was not possible to obtain any more information from the properties in Chile except that given in Table I. Crushing. Crushing plant operating data is given in Table 2. This table gives data on the crushers, feeders, and screens used at each property. The data obtained on feeders was confusing, but, rather than completely eliminate this information, it was decided to report it as given. The confusion lies only in the description of where the feeder is located. Where a primary feeder is listed it was not possible to determine if this feeder was on primary feed or primary discharge. For secondary feeders it is known that the feeder listed usually is feeding the secondary crushers, but at some properties it is handling the secondary crusher discharge. The same reasoning holds true for tertiary feeders-they handle either tertiary feed or discharge. This table contains a voluminous amount of data. A column giving tons per day per square foot of screen area would have been very informative, but some properties included circulating load in the feed rate and others listed new feed only, so calculations were meaningless. Autogenous Mills. The use of autogenous or semiautogenous mills for any property must be given serious consideration in the future. Table 3 lists data for four properties that are fully autogenous and four more semiautogenous mills that use balls to supplement the chunks of ore. This method of grinding is especially applicable when the ore is of such a nature that crushing problems would be severe, such as when ore is wet or sticky or contains a lot of fines. Paradoxically, it should also be considered when ore is tough and hard and blocky because then the competency of the ore means it can serve well as the grinding media. Where the ore varies greatly in hardness, as at Cyprus Pima and Lornex, semiautogenous grinding has been especially beneficial with capital costs and operating costs both 10-20% lower than could be obtained with conventional crushing and grinding. Rod Mills. For a great many years the standard milling operation used two- or three-stage crushing followed by open circuit rod mills and then ball mills in closed circuit with classifiers of some kind. A surprising number of properties crush to the fine size of about 3/8 in. and then use ball mills only, in closed circuit, with no rod mills. It is difficult to say whether rod mill-ball mill circuits or ball mill only is the best. One can be certain of two things: (1) the argument will go on for a long time and (2) for some mills one method obviously was superior over the other. As ball mills of 14, 15 ft, and larger came into use, more properties like Duval Sierrita (16b ft diam by 19 ft long) and Bougainville (18 x 21 ft) were built with single-stage ball mill grinding. Although there are larger rod mills used, especially in the iron ore industry, the largest rod mills on copper ore are at Twin Buttes (14 x 18.5 ft) and at Gibraltar (13'A x 20 ft). Shane is enjoying his new work. Six months ago, he was stocking shelves at his local supermarket and decided to make the big move to a job in mining with more challenge and, of course, more dollars. He's been through his inductions, received his training tickets and is now working in a crew of eight underground at a fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) operation. There are many more systems and processes here than in his retail job, and Shane's comfortable that his safety is being looked after. He is enjoying the continually changing work and conditions, it makes the job interesting. It's taking some time to get used to the roster and he is worn out by changeover, but he gets more time with friends and family during R & R.   Generally, the mining industry has a maturing safety culture and well developed systems. This sometimes lulls people into a false sense of security. Safety systems cannot anticipate every possible situation, nor can they replace people's perception, thinking and decision-making. To manage safety, it's critical to find the right balance between dependence on systems and a healthy fear and respect of risks we face.   As safety standards are raised, systems tend to get more thorough and complex. When a new person joins a mining crew, we induct and train them to provide the information they need. As labour availability again becomes short, and many new people join our industry, we shouldn't assume they know the fundamentals. We need to explain not only what they are expected to do, but why doing what we ask and expect will keep them safe. We must equip people to deal with both the routine and the unexpected.   This presentation explores the challenges of balancing a structured, systematic approach to safety with the need to also equip people to deal effectively with risks everyday in dynamic and extraordinary situations.   Session purpose Introduce participants to a way of looking at risk from a different perspective, as a force for change and progress, if managed well. Demonstrate that risk is something we need to engage with emotionally as well as physically, if we want our risk management efforts to be successful. This purpose will be achieved through an entertaining and engaging presentation, using photos and case studies. The session will initiate interest to explore new ways of thinking about risk and generate discussion about the balance between people and systems. What is the right balance and why getting it right enhances the safety culture, while getting it wrong can impact on safety, business performance and sustainability.

RESERVE Mining Co., owned jointly, by Armco Steel Corp. and Republic Steel Corp., controls 9% miles of magnetic taconite ore on the eastern end of the Mesabi Range lying between Mesaba and Birch Lake. The ore reserve which can be mined by open pit methods is conservatively estimated at 1.5 billion tons under a shallow, loose overburden requiring no rock stripping. Taconite now being mined is in the upper cherty horizon. It has been metamorphosed by the intrusion of gabbro and most of the iron oxide is altered to magnetite. The nonmagnetic portion of the iron is practically all in the form of silicate. The magnetic iron is finely disseminated through the rock and requires grinding -150 mesh for clean liberation of the iron oxide from the gangue.

In mining and remote areas of resource industry, there has been a development towards lacking emergency medical first aid response, that creates a potential disadvantage for patients after work accidents and other medical emergencies compared to standard population. This raises the question how a professional emergency medical coverage can be provided underground, taking into account lacking medical professionals in small resource companies combined with long rescue times. Aiming on the closure of this gap, a team of the mine rescue brigade from the Research and Training Mine Reiche Zeche (Forschungs-und Lehrbergwerk (FLB) Reiche Zeche) of the TUBAF Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg in Freiberg/Germany and its cooperating emergency departments of the Freiberg District Hospital and the Zeisigwaldkliniken Bethanien Chemnitz developed a totally new rescue concept using elements from tactical medicine and advanced emergency medicine combined with a specifically designed compact equipment and a highly standardised teaching curriculum. A fully new standardised and condensed tactical medical approach was developed including specifically adjusted equipment, and was taught in a didactically optimised way within 16 lessons in two days. Objective Structured Practical Examinations (OSPE) using manikins and simulated patients were conducted and compared to the identical exam of the reference group, which consisted of advanced paramedics. The standardised tactical medical scheme includes vital functions and body checks, advanced life support, nasal and intraosseous drug application, supraglottic airway management, artificial ventilation, thoracocentesis, bleeding control including tourniquet, fracture repositioning and splinting, transport bedding and thermal preservation. The developed Tactical Medical Mining Rescue (TMR) concept was subsequently included in the German guidelines for mine rescue services in 2022 and is already implemented in many companies in Germany and several international projects.

The investigation, selection, and implementation of remedial activities for large, complex mining and milling sites is dependent on the cost-effective management of tailing and waste materials. Site investigations evaluate the contaminant source areas, assess the potential release rate of contaminants, and determine the acceptable contaminant release rate for the site. Selection of appropriate remedial activities is based on evaluation of constructability, reliability, performance, effectiveness, permanence and cost. Remedial technologies available for tailing and waste material include removal, consolidation, capping and drainage control. Proper implementation and documentation of the selected remedial activities are critical to the overall success or failure of the remedial program. A step-by-step process, established at the initiation of a project, should accurately document all construction activities, monitor environmental conditions at the site, assess the performance of the remedial activities, and, ultimately certify that the remedial activities have met relevant and appropriate standards. Case histories are presented for a uranium mill at Uravan, Colorado and a lead, zinc mine at Gilman, Colorado. These case histories provide examples as to the combination of remedial technologies that have been applied at these specific sites.

Recent experiences within certain sectors of the international mining industry suggest an underestimation of the environmental risk associated with the design of mine waste management facilities. These experiences show that the technical and managerial challenge of responsible mine waste management is not always fully appreciated. Unfortunately, the image of the mining industry's environmental performance is negatively impacted by a relatively few number of failures. This negative view overrides the many positive contributions made by the majority of mining companies. The fact that these failures continue to occur to this day in both developed and developing countries is indeed remarkable, and indicates a degree of risk-taking approaching unacceptable levels. The design requirements for tailing storage facilities are, in many cases, more demanding than those of conventional water dams, because seepage of fluids which contain dissolved metals may pose a greater threat than the mere loss of water.

Catastrophic failures of dams and tailing storage facilities (TSF) have triggered the development of integrated ground monitoring concepts for hazard assessment, risk management and public safety. These concepts are based on knowledge and expertise of persons technically responsible for TSF. The aim is to combine this implicit and explicit knowledge with the data of in-situ- and remote sensors. Risk management for TSF must include a comprehensive monitoring program that integrates data from ground based-, air-borneand satellite-based sensors. Researchers at Technical University Georg Agricola (THGA) in Bochum, and EFTAS, Muenster, Germany, are fusing a variety of sensor data to enhance the capability and performance of TSF monitoring to ensure public safety downstream of TSFs. This paper describes the variety of sensors implemented in numerous research projects. It gives an outlook in terms of planned satellite missions with innovative equipment like hyperspectral sensors. The implementation of the data of these sensors in the analysis will increase the understanding of spatio-temporal impacts of mining activities. Future opportunities are explained by a datacube approach.

THE disposal of tailing or waste material, which is generally a very large proportion of the ore treated, is a major problem in the location and operation of any concentrating enterprise and especially so where the life of the operation is expected to continue for many years. Many factors need to be taken into consideration in the selection of a tailing site, chief among which are economical handling of the material, subsequent re-treatment of the tailing, and precaution against stream pollution by waste water. The final location of many mill sites bas been governed largely by the selection of a sui table area for tailing storage. The Sullivan concentrator of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company is situated about three miles from the Sullivan mine at Kimberley, B.C., and one of the deciding factors in its location at this distance from the mine was the availability of a suitable area in which tailing could be deposited. In view of the indicated long life of the property, a far-sighted policy bad to be adopted in the matter of tailing storage, for not only would it be necessary to accumulate a huge tonnage of finely ground material, but also reclamation for iron recovery at some future date bad to be considered. Some idea of the extent of the problem may be grasped when it is noted that, by the end of 1938, over 18,000,000 tons of tailing bad been impounded in an area of some 200 acres.

Development of new technologies and procedures for managing mineral residues and wastes may benefit from a clear understanding of existing tailing management practices. There is a considerable variability in tailing management techniques used in the Australian copper and gold operations, with associated differences and flow-on effects for the mine site water balance. A database was created, capturing a total of 41 copper and gold processing operations in Australia. The database provides information on tailing generation rates, tailing properties (solids contents and particle size distributions) and tailing storage facility (TSF) types and configurations (e.g. total TSF surface area and wetted surface area). Significant variability was found for the above-mentioned parameters. The solid tailing generation rates ranged from 0.5-37 Mt per annum in 2015. Furthermore, both the solids contents and particle size ranges of the tailing were highly site-specific, and largely dependent on the processing flowsheets. Solids contents of tailings ranged from 45-74% by weight whilst P80 sizes of the concentrator (flotation) feed varied from 75-185 μm. The estimated pumping distance was up to 15 km. The presented data can potentially be used to better tailing management strategies by estimating the potential recoverable water and recycling it, thereby thus reducing tailing footprints. "OZ MineralsÆ Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator is located 650 km north-east of Adelaide, 130 km north-east of BHP BillitonÆs Olympic Dam operation and 130 km south-east of the regional township of Coober Pedy, in the Gawler Craton region of South Australia. The concentrator was built in 2008 and commenced commercial production in early 2009. The Prominent Hill concentrator is comprised of a conventional grinding and flotation processing plant with a 10 Mt/a ore throughput capacity, operating well over the design rate of 8 Mt/a. Increased throughput rates have seen a decreased water recovery from the tailing thickener due to operating above design. Subsequently, greater pressure was placed on the site water balance and bore field off-take rates due to increased evaporation losses from greater volumes of water reporting to the tailing storage facility. This resulted in a trade-off between water availability and milling rates as part of the operating strategy.Two projects were implemented to increase the tailing thickener underflow density, thus improving water recovery directly back into the operating plant, reducing water losses via evaporation and decreasing the reliance on the bore field system operating at maximum rates to maintain mill throughput. The two projects were: tailing thickener feedwell redesign implementation of the Manta Cube control system.This paper discusses the background, implementation and benefits attained from these two key projects. Combined they have allowed a two to three per cent increase in tailing thickener underflow density to be consistently achieved, which has allowed greater water recovery. As a result, the processing plant has been able to operate at higher throughput rates when required, with greater water availability in the process plant recirculating system and a reduction in occurrences of the plant being æslowed downÆ due to water supply shortfalls. DURING the middle 1880s, shortly after the discovery of silver-lead ores in the Coeur d'Alene district of northern Idaho, it became apparent that concentration of the ores would be necessary to obtain a profitable product. Too much siliceous material was present for direct smelting, and the majority of the ores found at depth were too low in metallic content for economic smelting processes at the time. As the ores occurred in quartzite shear zones with siderite and quartz gangue, a large quantity of waste material was present in all the mines. As the galena was not finely disseminated, this made possible relatively good extraction of the argentiferous galena by coarse concentration. The first concentrators consisted mainly of coarse crushing, screening and jigging, principally by Harz jigs, the slimes being treated on buddies. Later Wilfley tables took the place of sand jigs and vanners superseded the buddies. Because of the marketing conditions, no attempt was made until 1900 to effect a recovery on the zinc minerals present, which were found associated in varying amounts with the galena. All through this period, the greater part of the production was obtained from mines containing ore assaying high in lead and low in zinc. Parts of some ore bodies would be reversed in this respect, so that ores high in zinc were left intact. During the decade after 1910, several important mines, The Success and The Interstate Callahan, containing ores high in zinc, were put into operation and were a material aid in the needed zinc production during World War I. Gravity concentration by jigs and tables was used during this period, with bulk flotation increasing in popularity for the treatment of the fine material that had already been treated by ordinary slime concentrating machinery. TAILINGS DISCHARGED INTO STREAMS From the start of mining and milling operations in this district until 1904, no attempt was made by the various mills in the upper district to impound or stack their tailings. They discharged them directly into the adjacent creeks or streams, to be carried away by high water. The Bunker Hill and Sullivan and the Last Chance mines, both in the relatively flat valley of the district, stacked huge piles of the coarse jig tailings on the near-by river bottom. Rain and snowfall are heavy in the Coeur d'Alene district, as it is on the heavily timbered Pacific slope of the Bitter Root Mountains.
