THIS paper gives the composition of the iron and slag at different stages in the "air-furnace" process of preparing "hard metal," or white cast-iron, for conversion into malleable cast-iron by annealing. The details of the process are given in an appendix. One of us had been trying for years to work some chemist of some of our malleable-iron works up to a degree of enthusiasm which would lead him to make such au investigation. It would have had the advantage of the greater familiarity with the conditions which one habitually on the spot must have. Failing in this, he made use of an opportunity which presented itself of taking samples here represented, with such fairness as the conditions permitted, holding firmly that a rough approximation to the truth is better than the complete lack of data, or that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. We hope that this attempt may stimulate others effectively to duplicate this work, and thus correct or confirm it. Our results are shown in Table I. and graphically in Figs. 1 and 2. Discussion.-At the time when the first two samples were taken, the metal and slag were still too sluggish to permit fair sampling, and not until sample 6 were the conditions really favorable, because at the time of the fourth sample the metal was not fully melted, and even at the time of sample 5 it was still sluggish. Indeed, the slag was probably very heterogeneous throughout, because it took up silica and alumina rapidly from the bottom, and because it was so siliceous as to be sluggish at this relatively low temperature. WHEN an Alaskan prospector makes a new mineral discovery he stakes out his claims and then starts prospecting for a near-by landing field. This may be a convenient lake but more often it is a gravel bar along a river, where, by cutting off some brush and throwing the larger rocks to one side and then tying a flour sack to a pole, he may decoy some intrepid aviator into testing it gingerly with the wheels of his plane. It was only a few years ago that .the fence around the baseball park at Fairbanks, Alaska, was taken down so that planes could get in and out of the ball park without ripping off boards. Today the grandstand is lost among the modern hangars which line one side of a modern and busy airport. Planes come and go all during the day, and in summer, when there is no darkness, the night stillness is frequently broken by the hum of a motor overhead. Fairbanks is the hub of interior Alaska and from that hub airplanes radiate in all directions to mining camps large and small. An air industry of comparable size is based at the town of Anchorage, and in fact there are but few towns of more than 200 population in the Territory that do not have one or more planes based there.

"An American Iron and Steel Institute Task Force evaluated developing direct steelmaking technology worldwide to seek a replacement for the coke-oven, blast-furnace, basic-oxygen process technology now in use. To remain internationally competitive it is essential to move away from the traditional series of batch processes towards continuous processing and the associated energy savings which are possible with high technology process control systems. The group identified in-bath smelting of iron ore pellets or fines with coal as the process most sui table for domestic raw materials (including abundant scrap) and called for research to study operation with varying degrees of preheat and prereduction of the ore by the gases generated from the coal and various degrees of combustion of these gases above the melt.A coordinated, 3-year, $27 million, direct steelmaking research program is proposed. Concurrent projects include design, construction, and experimental operation of an in-bath smelting pilot plant; modeling, simulations, and laboratory-scale experiments at universities on slag-phase and metallicphase reactions and interactions; and large-scale heat transfer and reaction rate trials. Also included are modeling studies and pilot plant trials of on-stream decarbonization and desulfurization; application of circulating fluid bed technology to fine ore reduction and hot gas cleanup; and specific heat transfer and fluid flow research projects.IntroductionThe American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), based on the Task Force studying direct steelmaking, believes strongly that a coordinated program of research on the reduction of domestic raw materials to liquid steel should be undertaken as part of the Steel Initiative program. To specify the steelmaking process for development best suited to the American steel industry and domestic raw materials, it was important to determine the state-of-the-art of direct steelmaking worldwide, both as practiced and under development, and then, by expert analysis of the processes and their potentials, to choose the process most likely to provide a domestic competitive edge."

"Abstract -The old Albert Silver Mine is a polymetallic deposit comprising concentrations of Cu­ Pb-Zn-Ag-U-F within a set of sub-parallel quartz-hematite veins which occur within the fine-grained apical phase of the 2050 Ma old A-type Bushveld granites. Mineralization occurs as an early pyrite­ chalcopyrite-arsenopyrite-galena-sphalerite-(argentiferous) tetrahedrite paragenesis followed by a later, more oxidized assemblage comprising chlorite-hematite-fluorite-pitchblende. Accumulation of metals appears to have taken place at the interface between a coarse-grained porphyritic granite and an overlying fine-grained phase: veins occur in the latter and represent leakage of magmatic fluids from the differentiated, water-saturated, subjacent granite.Mineralization processes in the Bushveld granites are believed to be related to long-lived circulation of dominantly magmatic fluids stimulated by the high heat productive capacity of the host rocks. Endo- and exogranitic tin-tungsten and base metal mineralization formed during an evolving hydrothermal system that lasted for several hundred million years, forming innumerable small- to medium­ scale polymetallic deposits. At the Albert Silver Mine, unroofing of the cover sequences at circa 1600 Mato 1700 Ma resulted in the incursion of lower-temperature, high-f02 meteoric fluids which remobilized the earlier sulfides and introduced the paragenetically late U-F mineralization ."

It is well known that removal of organic material such ,as Jacquer, paint, plastic prior to melting improves aluminum recovery. In addition to being an important economically, decoating of aluminum scrap has a positive impact on the environment, through better control of gaseous emissions. Most of the existing thermal decoaters for aluminum have been designed to operate with scrap containing a level of organic material lower than 10%. The main field of their present application is for recycling of used aluminum can, where levels of organic material are lower than 4%. Alcan has recently developed a new thermal decoating system in order to extend applications of this process to a much wider variety of aluminum scrap. The new decoater efficiently processes aluminum scrap with a level of organic material up to 50%. This new technology features the use of fluidized bed technology to thermally control the process. This innovative feature improves both performance and control over conventional delacquering systems based on hot air convection. This paper describes the basic principles of the technology and the design of the? first industrial unit commissioned by the Alcan Recycling plant in Shelbyville (TN) at the beginning of 1994. Typical applications and operating advantages are discussed.

"CO2 reduction by alternative energy devices such as wind-power, electric vehicles utilize rare-earth elements (REE) in several forms; such as in piezo-electric devices, batteries and magnetic materials. In 2010, the 95% of Rare Earth supply is controlled by China, compared to USA being dominant supplier in the 1980s. The dependence upon a single source of lanthanides has prompted the utilization of lower grades of titaniferous mineral concentrates, which often have rich seams of REE. We propose a new methodology, which utilizes the low-grade minerals for the extraction of synthetic rutile and also significant quantities of REE. We demonstrate the alkali roasting of lower grades of mineral concentrates and subsequent leaching in an aqueous medium for preferential flocculation of REE during the extraction of synthetic rutile. Changes in mineral structure during alkali roasting and leaching determine flocculation of REE and permit their separation at the front end of unit process.The physical chemistry and crystal structure of minerals in equilibrium with alkali and aqueous medium play an important role, which we explain by demonstrating the changes in the crystal structure. The quantification of separation of RE oxide via chemical analysis suggests that it may be possible to separate rare-earth oxides between 50 and 80% of the initial concentration in the non-magnetic fractions of ilmenite, for example. The microstructural and X-ray diffraction analysis points out that the presence of alumina and roasting with potassium based alkali enhances the separation and flocculation of rare-earth elements at the front end of the process after roasting. The process allows the recovery of CO2 generated by recycling into the process for the regeneration of alkali."

"Construction projects involve a great many risks. The risk that material prices will increase during construction or that the work under construction will be destroyed by fire, storm or some other act of God are just a few examples. In tunneling or other underground projects, one of the most significant risks is that the subsurface conditions encountered during construction will differ from what is expected. Each of these risks must be accounted for, managed and, ultimately, the duty of one party or the other to bear. The primary tool used to allocate the risks among the parties is the construction contract.How construction contracts allocate the risk that subsurface conditions will differ have changed substantially over the past century. Today, construction contracts typically allocate the risk through a series of provisions. The first is the differing site condition or changed condition clause. That clause, when included, typically provides that the owner bears the risk that the subsurface conditions will differ from what is indicated in the contract documents or what is reasonably expected. The second clause is one that provides that the contractor must conduct a reasonable site investigation and bear the risk of any conditions that such an investigation would reveal. The third provision includes disclaimers that are often included in geotechnical data provided by the owner (or the owner’s engineer) to the contractor which attempts to limit the information on which the contractor can rely. Because these risk-allocating devices seem to be somewhat conflicting, a brief discussion of each provides critical insight in understanding how the modern construction contract allocates the risk of differing site conditions.At the start of the 20th century, construction contracts looked substantially different than they do today. For example, one contract for the construction of a public water tunnel in Chicago, IL, drafted around 1895 contained the following clause:The contractor must take the work entirely at his own risk. No extra allowance will be made for quicksand, hardpan or boulders."

INTRODUCTION The $1.1 billion Bajo la Alumbrera Project, started up in 1997 by Minera Alumbrera Limited in the Catamarca Province of Northwestern Argentina, is the first large scale modern mining project to be developed in Argentina. Like many modern Andean mining projects, existing infrastructure was not available to economically transport the 875,000 tonnes of product per year. A variety of alternatives were investigated, including upgrading of existing roads and railroads, slurry pipelines, and combinations of these systems. The final system selected was to combine a 312 km slurry pipeline with an 820 km rail haul to a ship loading facility near Rosario. The concentrate pipeline crosses divergent terrain between the minesite at 2400 m elevation and the filter plant at 400 m elevation. The system selected represented the lowest net present cost alternative by a significant margin. BACKGROUND The Bajo Alumbrera deposit was discovered in 1947 by Professor Cetioni from the University of Tucuman. It is a large (>750 million tonnes) medium-grade (0.6%) copper deposit with high gold values (0.5 g/t*). The deposit outcrops, making it very suitable to modern, large scale, open pit mining techniques using 218 t trucks and 43 m3 shovels. Advances in gravity concentration of the gold helped to demonstrate the feasibility of the project in a study prepared by Fluor Daniel for Minera Alumbrera in 1994. The initial concentrator is the largest green-field concentrator ever constructed, rated at 85,000 t/d. Production will peak at 190,000 tonnes of copper metal and 710,000 troy ounces of gold per year, one of the top 10 copper and top 15 gold producers in the world. * Throughout this paper, the word tonne and abbreviation refer to the metric ton of 1000 kg.

ANY analysis of the aluminum situation, particularly of the factors involved in the current shortage of the metal, must consider the rapid march of events since the Munich fiasco of September 1938. At the end of 1938, the sole domestic producer of aluminum had more than a year's supply of metal on hand, having added 50,500 tons of output to stocks during the year. Not until war had been declared between the United Kingdom and Germany in September 1939 did the United States begin to make serious preparations for defense and a limited national emergency was proclaimed. Congress reflecting popular opinion, was not disposed to spend huge sums for armaments in 1939, and although 31,413 tons of aluminum was withdrawn from stocks. 107,500 tons was still on hand at the end of the year. When the President initiated a 50,000-airplane program in May 1940 the country was astounded, as previous Congressional authorizations of approximately 6000 planes for the Army by July 1911 and 3000 for the Navy by 1914 had been considered adequate.

The use of Alyavdin's equation Y(x,t) = 1-e(-bt) for describing the effect of grinding time on size distribution is discussed. The equation transforms into linear form by expressing it as log-log reciprocal (1 - Y) versus log t. For plotting, specially divided grids are available; Rosin-Rammler or Weibull charts may be used. The data of Herbst and Fuerstenau are especially useful for illustrating the Alyavdin-Weibull chart in two applications: (1) presenting data (which are relatively unaffected by experimental scatter) and comparing them with theoretical predictions, and (2) as a test for the zero-order kinetics production hypothesis. The chart based on the Alyavdin-Weibull equation is suggested as a useful aid in the analysis of kinetic data (/ versus f), though not as a procedure in its own right. Proposed applications are (1) displaying data with excellent clarity, since it avoids the kind of congestion inherent in some other plotting methods, and (2) as a test for assumed kinetic relationships. Sometimes, equation 1 describes the data quite closely, and in these cases the parameter values appear to be related to certain operating conditions.

The purpose of the following research, as originally planned, was to investigate the influence of temperature upon the plate¬amalgamation process. In order to consider the amalgamation process intelligently, it was first necessary to learn the nature of an amalgam. In the performance of this task it was found necessary to consult a large volume of literature and to perform experimental investigations. The conceptions of the nature of amalgams thus obtained have so important a bearing on the amalgamation-process as a whole, as well as upon the possible influences of temperature, that it was advisable to include them in the treatment of the subject. The broader title is therefore used, even though some features of the amalgamation process have been treated very briefly and others entirely omitted, there being nothing new to present regarding them and their development not required for a clear presentation of the matter in hand. I. HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION. Gold was one of the earliest metals known to man. Occurring in the metallic state, it could be picked up in nuggets or washed, as gold dust, front the sand and gravel of streams. Interesting descriptions of the processes employed in early times for the recovery of gold may be found in Pliny's Natural History and in the treatise by Agricola on ores and minerals. But little progress in the treatment of the ores of gold was possible until efficient -crushing machines were devised. Introduction Within the past year a new deposit of gypsum has been opened up and brought into production in the Province of Manitoba. Until 1930, Manitoba's entire production came from Gypsumville, northwest of Winnipeg, at mile 161 on the Gypsumville branch of the Canadian National railway. However, during 1930 a gypsum bed was opened up at a point one mile south of the village of Amaranth, forty miles north of Portage la Paririe, on the west side of lake Manitoba (See Figure 1). Although no exposure has yet been discovered, the presence of gypsum below the surface in that district has been known for many years as the result of drilling for water. In 1929, J. R. Spear (1), of Winnipeg, interested some local capital in the possibility of .finding commercial deposits of gypsum, and, after some exploration work in the area with a well drill, the Amaranth deposit was located. Sixteen holes were put down at intervals of 400 or 500 feet, all of which encountered what appeared to be a continuous bed of gypsum, about thirty-eight feet thick, at a depth of 92 feet. The extent of the deposit has not yet been determined.

Associated Minerals Consolidated Limited (AMC) is constructing a 112,500 tonne/yr synthetic rutile plant at Narngulu, near Geraldton in Western Australia. Design of the plant is based on the technology developed by AMC and utilised in its two existing plants at Capel in Western Australia. Ilmenite Feedstock for the plant will be sourced from AMC's mine at Eneabba and coal obtained from the Collie deposits. The plant is scheduled to come on stream in the second quarter of calendar 1987. The rationale of the decision to construct the Narngulu plant is examined against the background of the world market for high-Ti02 content feedstocks. Also provided is a detailed description of the plant and an examination of the technology used in process Design.

AWAKENED public interest in efforts to conserve natural resources will certainly be appreciated by the members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and a discussion upon conservation may well form a part of one of the Institute meetings, for the records of papers and discussions which appear in the 38 volumes of its Transactions are replete with evidence of effort's in this direction. Every process which reduces the fuel consumed or the power applied per unit of product; every utilization of waste material, or employment of that formerly rejected, to obtain something of value ; every feature of construction or operation which lessens the labor required or increases the output per employee, is an advance in the direction of true conservation. This may not appear from the records of late conferences or from published articles, in which the effort seems to be concentrated upon reducing the consumption and presenting to the people of the country estimates of exhaustion of natural resources. I rejoice in the awakening of public interest in a matter so important for the present and future welfare of our nation; I appreciate the possibility of much good following conferences of the Governors and delegates from various States and from national societies; and I recognize the interdependence, not only of different States, but of contiguous nations. In fact, the marvelous development of transportation by land and by water, and the decreasing rates at which commodities can be moved great distances, have in many cases practically obliterated geographical boundaries, and nearly every country on the globe can either market its product in other lands or draw upon them for raw or manufactured materials ; hence, conservation is an international subject.

ONE of the most serious and important economic administrative problems facing American railway authorities to-day is that of their rails, and it is one to which much thought, is being given, not only by the executive officers of the railways and the manufacturers of the steel rails, but also by State and National commissions. It is realized by many and admitted by some that the present situation is one which cannot continue. The roadways of railways must be made more secure, or the weight of rolling stock and the speed of trains must be lessened; and the desired result must be attained with the minimum outlay of money, both in expenditure on plant and in cost of operation. If the investment per mile is too large, or through the lessening of tonnage and efficiency of equipment the cost of operation is too great, the desired and demanded cheap service cannot he rendered to the public. Therefore, the weight of equipment cannot be greatly reduced, and lessening the rapidity of service would be far from satisfactory; consequently, the safety of the roadway must be secured with the least practical outlay. It is imperative that the roadbed should be properly graded, with the fewest practically possible curves; that it should have good ballast, be well drained, have good ties properly spaced, and be laid with sound rails of suitable weight, efficiently joined together, and that the whole property be carefully and intelligently cared for. My province is to treat of the sound rails. During the last few years there has been renewed interest in and discussion of that question, and I know that many rail makers not only have been and are desirous of maintaining the highest standards of manufacture which they may have attained, but have been and are seeking to better their product, in several instances devoting much time and money to that end. At the same time, they realize that the cost of any improvement in quality which they may accomplish must be kept within certain commercial bounds; and that fact is as fully understood by their patrons as by themselves, and it should be kept in mind by all who discuss the question.

The ?AMIRA Metal Accounting Project? had its origin in a workshop held in Cape Town on 1 August 2001, with the title ?Challenges in Metal Accounting and Information Management?, which was organised by the Western Cape Branch of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. This workshop identified the lack of an accepted set of standard procedures for metallurgical accounting as an industry-wide problem. Discussions which followed this workshop led to the initiation of the AMIRA Project P754, ?Improving Metal Accounting?, in 2003. The primary objective of the project was to provide tools for improving the auditability and transparency of metal accounting from mine to product and to facilitate good corporate governance. The planned deliverables of the project were a series of research projects into aspects of metal balancing in different types of metallurgical operations, a Code of Practice on Metal Accounting, and a textbook on the subject which could serve as a guide for metal accounting practitioners and students studying the topic. An additional planned deliverable was the provision of a new variety of professional experts in metal accounting, through successful completion of the research projects. Researchers were engaged at the Universities of Cape Town, Queensland and Stellenbosch and the project was sponsored by five mining companies, including three of the largest global mining groups. Research Program Eight research projects were undertaken as part of the P754 project and these are described briefly here to indicate the scope of the project. University of Cape Town ?Development of a methodology for measurement network design for metallurgical accounting at Namakwa Sands?. This project was based on the Namakwa Sands Separation Plant, with a data rich environment, and involved the investigation of measurement network design through the use of heuristics and the analysis of complex processing circuits. An industry-wide survey of current practice to facilitate the development of an expert system for plant accounting measurements was carried out. ?Metallurgical accounting design at the Waterval UG-2 Concentrator?. The objective of this project is to develop a model for predicting metal recoveries from the different components of a blended ore feed to a plant. ?Optimal measurement network design for metallurgical accounting at Zincor?. This project provided a hydrometallurgical test case for the design and evaluation of a semi-automated optimal measurement network. "INTRODUCTION Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (Anadarko) owns a region of oil shale properties acquired as part of the original Union Pacific Land Grant of the 1800’s in southern Wyoming. These holdings are greater than 2 million acres and occur throughout the Green River Formation in southwestern Wyoming. One area was prioritized for further study by Anadarko Minerals called the Kinney Rim in the Washakie Basin due to low environmental impact, proximity to infrastructure, high ore grade, and low mining cost. The area is a low-overburden oil shale resource that can be developed using surface mining methods, processed by conventional surface retort, and placing waste rock disposal back on the bench for a design capacity of 10,000 barrel per day. The purpose of this papers is to present the results of environmental analysis and timeline, the mine plan, and surface ore processing to offer a resource-ready energy source.Mineral rights for the Kinney Rim area are owned by Anadarko, the United States Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the State of Wyoming. Mining of oil shale for this study targets Anadarko owned mineral resources.GEOLOGY The study area is in the Green River and Washakie Basins in western Wyoming. The host geologic member is the Laney Oil Shale. Figure 2 illustrates the Laney shale within a generalized lithologic cross section.OIL SHALE LEASING The proposed Kinney Rim oil shale mining project is located in an area dominated by a 1 square mile checkerboard landownership pattern with every other section typically administered by Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Anadarko. Surface and mineral ownership is a split estate legal entity. The immediate Kinney Rim mine plan is all on Anadarko sections."

"A mathematical formulation has been presented to describe heat and fluid flow phenomena in CVD operations. In the statement of the problem, which included consideration of plasma enhanced CVD systems, emphasis was placed on identifying the parameters which play a key role in determining the rate and the spatial uniformity of the deposition process. This was done both through the appropriate dimensionless groups and by presenting an extensive set of computed results. The main conclusions that may be drawn from this work are that the deposition rate will be inherently non-uniform for atmospheric CVD systems; this may be somewhat ameliorated by inclining the susceptor or changing the vessel contours. Operation at greatly redeced pressures and for PECVD systems will give a much more spatially uniform deposition rate.1. INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, there has been a growing interest in chemical vapor deposition techniques for the preparation of thin films for semiconductor, photovoltaic applications and for coatings in general, as evidenced by numerous journal articles and symposium proceedings devoted to this topic (1-6). An interesting variant of this technique is to perform the deposition in a plasma or glow discharge at low pressures because this technology obviates the need for the thermal decomposition of the precursor at the substrate surface and permits operation at greatly reduced temperatures (7-10).By far, the largest portion of the reported work dealing with both these aspects of the technology has been concerned with the characterization of the deposit, quite properly so. THE precipitation of phosphoric with titanic acid, by boiling an iron solution which had been reduced to the ferrous condition by sulphuretted hydrogen or sulphurous acid, was first noticed by E. H. Bogardus in 1874.* Since that time, as far as we are aware, not much has been published on the relation- of these two acids to each other, and to silicic acid, in the ordinary course of analysis of iron ores. The following investigation may perhaps aid in clearing up some of the obscure points in the analysis of titaniferous ores. THE DETERMINATION OP PHOSPHORUS.
