The effectiveness of ultrasonic velocity measurements and attenuation of the propagating pulse was evaluated as a means of Non-Destructive characterization of cold worked and annealed copper. Commercial copper is subjected to mechanical working such as forging, rolling and thermal treatment to induce re-crystallization. The microstructural changes that occur in copper and a variation in its mechanical properties are subjected to analysis using the ultrasonic technique. The signal processing is carried out using the wavelet analysis technique. The features of wavelet analysis namely, localization in space and the presence of an infinite set of basis functions allows removing noise from the time series and components of a non-stationary signal to be analyzed. This is seen to improve the accuracy of the results obtained from the ultrasonic technique in the case of copper, which has distinct coarse grains that are difficult to inspect due to backscattering from the grain boundaries.

When the zirconium pressure tube(PT) is in contact with the calandria tube(CT) in the pressurized heavy water reactor(PHWR), the temperature gradient between the inner and outer wall of the PT results in a thermal diffusion of hydrogen(deuterium) and hydride blisters are formed on the outer surface of the PT. Since Zr-2.5Nb pressure tubes have a high risk for the formation of blisters during their operation in a PHWR, there is a strong incentive to develop a method for the non-destructive detection of the blisters grown on the tube surfaces. However, because there is little mismatch in an acoustic impedance between the hydride blisters and zirconium matrix, it is not easy to distinguish the boundary between the blister and the zirconium matrix with the conventional ultrasonic methods. This study has focused on the development of an ultrasonic method to detect the hydride blisters formed on Zr-2.5Nb pressure tubes. Hydride blisters were grown on the outer surface of a Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube using a cold finger attached to steady state thermal diffusion equipment. Ultrasonic velocity ratio method as well as conventional ultrasonic parameters with an immersion technique was developed to detect small hydride blisters on the Zr-2.5Nb pressure tubes.

In lightweight metal processing such as aluminum (AI) and magnesium (Mg), metal cleanliness is a crucial process parameter for refining, part manufacturing and recycling in order to obtain high quality parts and products. In this paper, techniques for cleanliness evaluation of molten AI and Mg using ultrasonic probes with clad steel buffer rods having high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are presented. Due to the high SNR of the ultrasonic probes used, backscattered ultrasonic signals from inclusions, which may be oxide films and/or particles, in molten Mg and those from silicon carbide particles, having an average size of 50f.Ull, added in molten AI are successfully detected with reflection configurations of pulse-echo and/or pitch-catch modes at an ultrasonic frequency of 10 MHz. In addition, relative cleanliness evaluation of molten Al and Mg is demonstrated. In order to establish the procedure and to investigate the optimum system configurations for cleanliness evaluation of molten metals, particle flow simulation system using water and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) particles has been constructed. Counting the number and measuring the size distribution of the PVC particles, having an average diameter of 128um, suspended in water with the PVC volume concentrations of 5ppm and 10ppm are performed with ultrasonic pitch-catch mode. The counted numbers of particles by the presented method and system have good agreement with the calculated results with a count error of less than 10% or two counts. Based on the results obtained with water simulation experiments, the prototype system for cleanliness evaluation of molten Mg by counting and sizing inclusions has been developed. Roof bolts are the primary means of supplemental support in coal mines and are widely used in other mines. Presently, post installation loads are measured infrequently on only about 10% of the bolts by using standard torque wrenches that limit accuracy to about ± 30%. Because mine roof bolts are long, slender, non-uniformly sized, roughly forged, placed in a difficult environment, and subject to severe bending on installation, researchers have been unable to use ultrasonic reflection techniques to measure strain. A complete measurement system has now been assembled by the US Bureau of Mines, Denver Research Center. Obstacles such as bolt preparation, transducer mounting, reliable reflection, and calibration have been dealt with. The seemingly simple concept of measuring the time of flight of an ultrasonic pulse to a reflector is actually complex due to the need to measure to 0.0025 mm (0.0001 in.) accuracy, the sensitivity of velocity to temperature, and stress, and the stability required to make measurements over several years.

The method of ultrasonic-assisted leaching was used to extract vanadium from the stone coal, with alkali as leaching reagent. The effects of ultrasonic power, concentration of alkali, reaction temperature, liquid-solid ratio and reaction time were investigated, respectively. The optimal ultrasonic leaching condition for vanadium extraction is as follows: ultrasonic power 230W, concentration of alkali 5%, liquid-solid ratio 3:1, reaction temperature 90℃ and reaction time 1h. The leaching rate of vanadium reaches 76.4% under the optimal condition, which is 12.2% higher than that of non-ultrasonic leaching. The reason on enhancing the leaching rate of vanadium by ultrasonic leaching was discussed. It is indicated that the ultrasonic cavitation can increase the surface area of mineral, which is beneficial to facilitate the reaction rate. "The effect of ultrasonication on reactions at solid/liquid interfaces was investigated in two slurry systems, i.e. gold cyanidation and geopolymerisation. The kinetics of gold extraction were significantly enhanced and the cyanide consumption was reduced in the cyanidation of a pyrite concentrate using ultrasonication, probably due to the prevention of leaching passivation, the improvement of the dissolution of the gold host sulphides and the oxidation of soluble sulphides to sulphate. The effectiveness for ultrasonication was improved with the injection of oxygen and the addition of dithiophosphate through enhancing the formation of the oxidation radicals and selectively inducing cavitation bubbles directly at the sulphide interfaces. Ultrasonically enhanced cyanidation could render currently uneconomic deposits viable for extraction by improved cavitation efficiency with the aid of surfactants.Ultrasonication increased the compressive strength of the formed geopolymers through accelerating the dissolution of the Al-Si materials, strengthening the bonds at the solid particle/gel phase interfaces, enhancing the polycondensation process and improving the formation of semi-crystalline to crystalline phases. The use of power ultrasound will yield high-performance geopolymer materials."

Oxygen gas bubbles generate on anode during Pb electro-deposition process in PbSiF6-H2SiF6 aqueous solutions at room temperature. Cell voltage varies as the bubbles formed on the anodes surface. The bubble layer on the anode makes a voltage drop that consumes energy in the Pb process, which can be reduced by applying ultrasound on the anode. The effects of ultrasound frequency and anodic current density were investigated with ultrasound on and off, alternatively during the Pb electrode-position process. The removing of the gas bubbles were recorded in association with a drop in the cell voltage. The cell voltage can be lowered by 4% - 6% with ultrasound, which has potential for energy saving in Pb production.

"A laboratory study was carried out to determine the potential role and effect of ultrasonic irradiation in the flotation of a Sudbury copper-nickel sulphide ore. The use of ultrasound was tested separately at the pulp preconditioning, collector conditioning and flotation stages. While no significant benefits were evident in the latter two cases, ultrasonic preconditioning of pulp improved the grade-recovery performance and had the prospect of reducing reagent consumption rates. Tests were conducted on both the normal and oxidized ore samples, and several variables were investigated, including ultrasound frequency (25 kHz and 45 kHz), ultrasonic power (up to 1.6 W/cm2), duration of ultrasonic treatment (up to 60 minutes), and the intensity of pulp agitation employed during the application of ultrasound. Ultrasound frequency of 25 kHz and duration of 15 minutes yielded satisfactory results. Changes were found to occur in the temperature, pH and Eh of the pulp during ultrasonic processing. The favorable effects of ultrasound observed in this study were attributed primarily to its surface cleaning capability.INTRODUCTIONThe use of ultrasound for the surface cleaning of objects is well known. Ore flotation is based essentially on the surface properties of minerals, and hence stands to benefit from ultrasonic treatment which may help restore mineral surface characteristics that might have been lost or modified through oxidation, etc. Expected outcomes of this method of treatment include improved flotation kinetics, higher recovery, better selectivity, and savings in reagent consumption, as has been demonstrated by various researchers (Aldrich and Feng 1999, Celik 1989, Ozkan 2002, Letmathe et al. 2002, Nicol et al. 1986)."

"Water electrolysis in 0.4 mol/L NaOH solution for hydrogen generation was carried out with ultrasound introduced through the anode. It was found that the cell voltage reduced by 150-300 mV in the current range of 20 mA to 40 mA with ultrasound frequency at 25.3 kHz. The cell operation became unstable when the cell current was larger than 75 mA with ultrasound. This reduction in cell voltage was due to removal of the gas bubbles on the electrode surface, which can be directly observed in the see-through cell of water electrolysis. Ultrasound with frequency of 33.3 Hz was also tried, but no better effect was obtained. The results suggest that ultrasound assisted water electrolysis can have potential in energy savings for hydrogen production.IntroductionIn electrolytic process, the electrode that the bubbles generated on its surface usually covered a thin gas film, which can be caused an additional voltage about 0.15-0.25V[l,2], especially in aluminum electrolysis. To solve the problem, loading the ultrasound removes the gas bubbles from the electrodes, this subject had been researched in recent years. From 1995 Jilai Xue et al[3,4,5]. applied the ultrasound in aluminum electrolysis in lab. The results from Sheng-De Li et al.[6] reveals that can decrease the cell voltage and have influences about the hydrogen and oxygen's output ratio. Although there are many paper about the applying of ultrasound such as in electrolysis[5,6], deposition[7,8], plating[9,10], oxidation of salts substance on the surface of electrodes[l 1] and so on, the effect of different frequencies ultrasound hadn't been investigated deeply.We focus on the anode voltage by different frequencies ultrasound and the bubble behaviors in this paper. The environment of this experiment is in alkaline solution. Through this exploration it can offer a basis for the applying of ultrasound in electrolysis."

Cable bolts are being used more extensively by the mining industry for many different rock reinforcement applications. The configuration of these bolts has evolved over the last 20 years to meet the immediate needs of industry at the particular time. Most improvements to date have focussed on increasing the mechanical performance with little attention given to issues such as ease of handling, matching response to that of the rock mass or corrosion protection. Ultrastrand has been designed and being developed with this broad perspective in mind so that it will satisfy the ground reinforcement needs of today's and tomorrow's mining industry.Laboratory tests on Ultrastrand prototypes have confirmed that mechanical performance is superior or equivalent to Standard and Birdcage Strand respectively. Preliminary discussions have been held with an installation equipment manufacturer with a view to conducting a trial at a mine site by early-1992.

Refratários MgO-C encontram-se entre os mais adequados para o uso na linha de escória de panelas para aço líquido. Seu comportamento, nesta aplicação, depende de fatores termodinâmicos e cinéticos. Métodos de cálculo termodinâmico para avaliar o potencial de degradação de refratários MgO-C por escórias e pela atmosfera são revistos brevemente. Tais métodos envolvem, em geral, premissas importantes sobre a quantidade de materiais envolvidos. Para avaliar um método mais simples, foram escolhidos dois tijolos MgO-C e duas escórias típicas do processo da CSN. Estes tijolos e escórias foram caraterizados, neste trabalho. O método apresentado consiste na realização de cálculos de equilíbrio em que a principal variável é a fração de escória em uma mistura hipotética com o refratário. Para a composição do refratário foram empregadas (a) composição média e (b) composição da matriz do tijolo. Os resultados indicam que é possível realizar previsões iniciais quanto à reatividade do refratário e determinada escória de forma simples. Os cálculos, evidentemente, não substituem testes cinéticos e testes em escala industrial, em vista da complexidade dos sistemas em questão.

Neste trabalho foi estudada a corrosão dos aços API 5L B e X52MS em soluções ácidas descritas nas normas NACE TM0284 e TM0177. A susceptibilidade ao trincamento induzido pelo hidrogênio (HIC) foi determinada em cada meio, os produtos de corrosão foram caracterizados por microscopia eletrônica de varredura e espectrometria de energia dispersiva de raios-X e, posteriormente identificados por difratometria de raios-X. Conclui-se que o pH afeta diretamente a solubilidade dos produtos de corrosão e a permeação de hidrogênio. Na solução 177-A, ambos os aços sofreram corrosão generalizada, enquanto que na solução 177-B foi evidenciada a presença de um filme fino descontinuo. Somente o API 5L B não passou no teste de HIC. Na solução 284-B de maior pH, os aços apresentaram filmes espessos e o trincamento pelo hidrogênio não foi observado.

El presente trabajo refiere cómo los concentrados de cobre pueden fundirse en un sistema de ciclón con un reactor de soplo por alto. Asimismo, se describe el proceso de la técnica de flotación durante las dos primeras décadas del siglo anterior, donde el concentrado de grano era muy fino, aunque existieron razones económicas que contradecían el uso de tal concentrado de flotación en el horno de tiro. En este sentido, se utilizó el horno reverbetorio, cuyo trabajo neutro se encuentra libre de toda reacción química metalúrgica. La eficacia de este equipo permitió la construcción de otro horno, al tiempo que satisfizo las necesidades grandes de otras plantas de flotación eficientes. Sin embargo, surge la necesidad de mejorar dicho proceso a mediados de este siglo, conduciendo a la aplicación de otro métodos como el Outukumpu, el cual satisface los requisitos de control ambiental or concentración de las sustancias gaseosas detríticas, asi como al uso de otros equipos.

El presente texto señala la importancia del programa de seguridad industrial -en tanto representa la responsabilidad de la gerencia y complementa el interés y seguridad del trabajador-. El planeamiento de responsabilidad depende de cómo se desarrollen las operaciones de orden, limpieza, trabajos bien realizados, ausencia de accidentes y la eliminación de sufrimiento y perjuicio económico a la familia del trabajador. De otro lado, el cumplimiento de las normas de seguridad son bases complementarias de un programa moderno de seguridad, el cual es preparado por nuestra Sección de Seguridad Industrial, que forma parte del Departamento de Relaciones Industriales. Cabe mencionar que para desarrollar un exitoso programa de seguridad en la empresa, es necesario revisar siete elementos básicos que sirven de guia para la elaboración de un programa de actividades en un año cualquiera. Así como el desarrollo de la conciencia de seguridad, el entrenamiento, repetición, corrección son elementos que ayudan a controlar y reducir los accidentes de trabajo, como la voluntad y deseo de trabajar de los trabajadores.

Los hornos eléctricos de arco han sido motivo de una aplicación dinámica de nuevas tecnologías en lo que va de este siglo. La preparación de la chatarra y el uso de materiales de carga alternativos han dado lugar a la concepción de nuevos equipamientos y experiencias en todo el mundo. Surgen nuevos conceptos para el precalentamiento de la chatarra, superando las limitaciones de mantenimiento y ambientales de los conceptos iniciales y mejorando su performance energética. El aporte de energía química para la fusión supera sus límites año a año, requiriendo el desarrollo de equipamiento capaz de una acción rápida y precisa con grandes caudales de gases y sólidos inyectados. Existen nuevas herramientas para eliminar los riesgos de seguridad en la plataforma del horno, haciendo uso de sistemas de enfriamiento más seguros y duraderos, robots, automación de la operación del agujero de colado, y puertas de escoria controladas desde el púlpito.

The composition of multi-component materials is proved to be unambiguously determined by the composition uncertainty parameter (composition entropy). At the same time, every component, depending on its content, introduces a certain value into this parameter. Quality criterion of multi-component separation is determined by the total change of this parameter for all products obtained as a result of the separation process. This parameter can unambiguously estimate both multi-product separation and complicated schemes of modern beneficiation plants. It can be used to estimate binary mixtures separation, too. During the optimization of multi-product separation, another problem arises, which is not peculiar to binary mixtures. In this case, the total efficacy depends on the order of separation boundaries, as well. In the present paper, a specific example of initial product separation into seven products by six boundaries is investigated. It is clear that with respect to a single boundary, two products only can be obtained. In this case, the separation optimum is shown to correspond to the separation of boundary-class particles equally into both products. We have also established that from the point of view of entropy, the maximal possible separation efficacy corresponds to equiprobable composition of the initial mixture, i.e., the fine product quantity in the material to be separated is equal to that of the coarse product. Three groups of experiments were carried out. In the first group, the boundaries were consecutively specified from the finest to the coarsest one. In the second group, the boundaries were set vice-versa, i.e., consecutively from the coarsest to the finest one. In the third group, no sequence was observed. At every separation stage, a boundary was specified in such a way that the separated material composition was as close as possible to equiprobable one relative to this boundary. Total efficacy was different in all the three cases. In third group of experiments, its value is the highest, which confirms the advanced supposition. The obtained results are phenomenological, ? they can be applied to any processes of solid, liquid and gaseous materials separation.

The first major project in Boston's new access to Logan Airport was an Immersed Tube Tunnel which extended 3,600 ft. from South Boston to East Boston across Boston Harbor. Twelve tube sections, 300 ft. long x 80 ft. wide x 40 ft. high, were lowered into an excavated trench which was then backfilled. The depth of the trench at mid-channel was approximately 100 ft. below mean high tide. At the East Boston end the tube terminated close to the present shoreline. At the South Boston end the tube terminated approximately 600 ft. inland from the shore line where a ventilation building was required. The depth to subgrade from existing ground at the ventilation structure was approximately 85 ft. The soil profile at this location consisted of 50 ft. of miscellaneous rubble fill, 25 ft. of Boston blue clay, and 10 ft. of glacial till. A small amount of weathered argellite existed at the north end of the structure. Part of the Morrison Knudsen, Interbeton, J.F. White, Joint Venture contract to construct the Immersed Tube Tunnel (ITT) was the construction of a cofferdam at the tube/ventilation building interface. The ventilation building was to be built as part of another contract. The construction of the cofferdam and the excavation to the building subgrade was the responsibility of J.F. White Contracting Company.
