Lithium-ion battery pack fires pose great hazards to the safety and health of miners. A detailed experimental study has been conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) to investigate the effectiveness of different fire suppression systems on Li-ion battery pack fire extinguishment. Tests were conducted in a well-ventilated container. Two sizes of battery packs (12 V, 24 V) were heated by heater strips to trigger thermal runaway and fire. Water mist with different flow rates, ABC powder, type D dry chemical, and water mist with F500 additives were used as the fire suppression agents. Multiple thermocouples were installed on the battery packs to measure the temperature evolution during the tests. The results indicated that the water mist with F500 additives is the most effective suppressant among the agents tested. Dry chemicals, however, do quench the fire for a moment, but cannot prevent re-ignition of the battery since they do not provide enough cooling. The findings of this paper can be used to develop safer battery fire suppression techniques in mining environments.

Requirements of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) for Eastern and Western U.S. coals will not be the same because of differences in coal sulfur content, ash analysis, and beating value. The effects of these differences and of limited availability of water in the West are the subjects of this paper. Eastern and Central bituminous coals are generally high in sulfur and require removal efficiencies in the range of 70 to 90 percent to meet the Federal emission standard of 1.2 lb SO2/MMBtu. Ash in Eastern coals is low in alkali content and is relatively insoluble in scrubber solutions. High sulfur content and market availability make salable product methods more attractive in the fast and Central United States than in the West. Western subbituminous coals and lignites are generally low in sulfur content, however, only a few deposits could reliably meet the Federal emission standard without FGD, Required removal efficiencies generally fall in the range of 0 to 60 percent to meet the 1.2 lb SO2/MMBtu limit. If the standard were raised to 2 lb S02/MMBtu, approximately two-thirds of Western coals could be burned without FGD. Some Western coals contain ash high in alkali, some of which is soluble in scrubber solutions. This complicates scrubber chemistry, but it also provides the meant for displacing some or all of the limestone requirements when only moderate S02 removal is required. Dry areas in the West would benefit from full commercial developement of dry processes of FGD.

Flue gas desulfurization when burning western U.S. coals can be expected to be easier to achieve and less costly than when burning higher sulfur eastern and central coals. However, western coals cannot generally be burned in compliance with federal and state new source emission standards without some degree of control. Western coals and lignite represent about 20% of total U.S. recoverable reserves with 90% of that strip minable, and their production is predicted to increase from the 60 million tons mined in 1973 to 300 million tons in 1985. Most will be used for electric power generation, where low sulfur content is a paramount concern. Western coals are predominantly below 1% sulfur; low compared with typical values of 2 and 3% for eastern and central coals. Coal cleaning for removal of sulfur is not commercially practiced on Western coals, which typically contain half organic and half pyritic sulfur. The General Purpose Simulation System (GPSS) is a computer simulation language that has been used for simulations of open pit haulage operations since the 60's. It is easy to learn, simple to use, and has a block-diagram structure that is amenable to load-haul systems. However, due to its lack of flexibility, there are situations where another language should be chosen. This paper reviews the characteristics and capabilities of both GPSS and FORTFAN with regard to open pit shovel and truck simulation. The relative advantages and disadvantages are highlighted and a case study presented along with comparative results from two computer models (one written in GPSS and the other written in FORTRAN).

Double corrosion protection (DCP) rock bolts have evolved to become complicated assemblies comprising numerous components. This complexity is mainly associated with durability considerations including potential exposure to adverse groundwater conditions and ensuring separation of dissimilar metals within the bolt assembly itself.Recent progress in the construction of glass-fibre reinforced polymer (GRP) rock bolts have the potential to provide a viable alternative to conventional steel rock bolts in civil tunnelling applications. The durability of the material results in a much simpler bolt detail and permits the use of resin rather than solely cement based grouts.This paper presents the findings of the comparative structural testing of GRP bolts with conventional DCP steel bolts. The axial load performance, including stiffness, ultimate capacity and ductility of bolts are compared. Shear behaviour of bolts is considered, including durability issues associated with damage to the plastic sleeve used in DCP bolts.The paper also considers other issues which are relevant to the design of temporary and permanent rock bolts used in tunnel support, such as initial tensioning and grouting. A comparison of gold, platinum and sulfide ion selective electrodes was made for determination of Eh in solutions containing hydrosulfide ions as a model system. The comparison was made in terms of the accuracy of the measured response, response time, pH dependence, and reproducibility of measurement. The sensitivity of each electrode towards changes in hydrosulfide ion concentration was measured in terms of the change in measured Eh per decade change in concentration. On the basis of a detailed investigation of the electrode processes occurring at the surface of gold and platinum electrodes, it was postulated that within the pH range investigated these electrodes respond to changes in the hydrosulfide ion concentration in solution. In comparison, the sulfide ion selective electrode is known to respond to changes in the sulfide ion activity in solution. Although the potentials measured with gold and platinum electrodes were mixed potentials, pretreatment procedures can be used to obtain a signal suitable for process control. For control of hydrosulfide ions in flotation pulps, the use of a gold electrode pretreated at 1.0 V with respect to a standard hydrogen electrode is recommended.

'T. C. MERRIMAN, New Haven, Conn. (written discussion *).-This most interesting paper gives much carefully obtained and valuable data. However, there are two points in connection with the commercial application of such data that might possibly be a source of trouble and mis-understanding. In the first place, the examination of thin sections of annealed brass, subjected to standard Brinell test.(500 kg. on a 10-mm. diameter ball) at thicknesses from 0.075 to 0.150 in. (1.9 to 3.8 mm.) indicates that cold work has been performed on the specimen during the application of the load sufficient to extend way through the section, and have the hardness of the metal affected by the backing. If the usual steel support is used, this effect is very evident. If a piece of soft brass is used as a support, there is an indentation in the surface of the support accompanied by a bulge on the under side of the tested specimen opposite the impression made by the 10-mm. ball. The result is that Brinell specifications (governmental or otherwise) on stock for a certain purpose may not be fair in all cases, since manufacturers, owing to differences in equipment, etc., may not all use precisely the thickness and conditions of stock on which the Brinell specifications were based. This would mean that the government Brinell specification might not give them the temper of stock best suited for their manufacturing methods. The concluding paragraph of this paper, stating that "the hardness of cartridge brass may be determined with greater accuracy by the Brinell hardness measurement than by attempting to judge it from the grain size" appears to be in line with the movement of the last year or so among brass manufacturers toward substitution of the Brinell test for microscopic examination as an acceptance test on cartridge brass. The statement may he strictly true that the Brinell test is the best test for hardness, but it is not, as the statement might readily be construed, a sufficient test of suitable condition. For instance, some cartridge brass might accidentally have been overheated to a point where it would be distinctly unsafe to use for the manufacture of small arms cases and then be so rolled (reduction 3 to 5 per cent.) as to pass perfectly proper Brinell specifications. Under such conditions the microscope would reveal its unsuitability where the Brinell test had failed so to do.

Comparison of Grinding and Liberation Processes for Stalky Biomass Materials as a Prerequisite for Production of Energy Pellets with High Calorific Value Pelletising biomass, especially straw and stalky materials, requires a product specific size reduction and liberation. However, moisture content plays an important role in palletising and also affects the energetic properties of the biomass. The paper illustrates the characteristics of the mentioned type of biomass and specifies the necessities for production of energy pellets. Defined requirements for biomass energy pellets will be shown based on relevant standards. The work focuses on a comparative investigation of the straw fibres after grinding with hammer/impact mill and after the liberation of the straw fibres with twin-screw extruder (two different communition units). A traditional hammer mill as well as an hydrothermal process taking place in a twin-screw extruder were utilised. Results of the grinding and liberation of rye and wheat straw fibres are discussed based on a detailed particle characterisation (particle size and shape distribution). Besides high calorific value the main pellet quality parameters are mechanical stability, abrasion resistance and further combustion technical characteristics. The particle size distribution displayed optimum characteristics for the combustion processes to be carried out in a furnace. The durability of the pellets produced from straw fibres liberated with twin-screw extruder was comparatively better then that prepared with the straw fibres after grinding with impact mill. Particle size distribution, abrasion values and the strength characteristics showed a good correlation with each. The high presence of N and S would result in high NOx and SOx emissions, where as the high concentrations of Cl would corrode the furnace. These chemical properties of the straw would restrict its usage in small scale furnaces.

"Considering overgrinding in a grinding process, the grinding characteristics of comminuted hematite products using a HPGR and a conventional CC were comparatively studied. The major properties including particle size, grinding kinetics and grinding technical efficiency (Et) were investigated. Individual size distributions (ISDs) of -2.0mm in a HPGR product showed a more significant “double-peak” characteristic than a CC product. As a result, HPGR products were finer and had a wider full-size distribution because of the greater proportion of fines. The parameters m and zi in m-th order grinding kinetics were analyzed by the partial-derivative method and the critical time tc(tc = exp (1/ zi)) was obtained. zi mainly affected the breakage rate when t < tc; otherwise, m mainly affected the breakage rate. In these tests, tc was considerably higher than the grinding times, and HPGR products yielded a higher zi-value than the CC product for the same sieve size. This indicated that HPGR products had a higher breakage rate and needed a shorter grinding time for a certain grinding fineness. Et was calculated by simulating the size distributions of batch grinding products. HPGR products gave a lower Et at a decreasing rate than the CC products for -2.0 mm feed and -0.5mm feed, and then showed a slightly higher Et for -2.0+0.5 mm feed. This indicated that overginding in HPGR full-size products was more serious under the condition of coarse grinding, whereas the efficiency was higher and overgrinding weakened significantly in HPGR coarse products because of screening-out fines. Based on the above research, a new process of “ultra-crushing in HPGR – classified grinding” was advanced, reducing ores tonnage into first stage ball mill significantly, improving grinding efficient and weakening overgrinding in the whole grinding process.INTRODUCTIONIn mineral processing, comminution accounts for a substantial portion (approximately 60~70%) of the energy consumed in plants. As an ultra-fine crushing equipment,the application of the HPGR for industrial comminution has been paid close attention because of its low specific energy, low steel consumption, high capacity and high ratio of reduction, among others (Schonert, 1998; Norgate & Weller, 1994; Fuerstenau & Kapur, 1995). HPGRs comprise two counter-rotating rolls that draw feed material into the roll gap. One roll is fixed to the mainframe, while the other movable roll is mounted on slides and positioned by hydraulic rams. The specific pressing force (SPF) (i.e., total force divided by projected roller area) is typically in the range of 3~9 N/mm2 depending on the application, while pressures of up to 1000 N/mm2 have been measured within the operating gap (Maxton , Morley, & Bearman , 2003)."

Gross calorific value (GCV) of coals was estimated using artificial neural networks, linear and non-linear regression techniques. Proximate and ultimate analysis results were collected for 187 different coal samples. Different input data sets were compared, such as both proximate and ultimate analysis data, and only proximate analysis data and only ultimate analysis data. It was observed that the best results were obtained when both proximate analysis and ultimate analysis results were used for estimating the gross calorific value. When the performance of artificial neural networks and regression analysis techniques were compared, it was observed that both artificial neural networks and regression techniques were promisingly accurate in estimating gross calorific values. In general, most of the models estimated the gross calorific value within ±3% of the expected value.

The Tennessee Capitol Corridor connects the Cordell Hull Building (CHB) to the State Capitol, which isa 232-foot-by-124-foot (71 x 38 m) structure in Nashville that includes porticoes built from local massive limestone. This connection was affected by the Capitol Connector Pedestrian Tunnel (CCPT) project, which is part of the overall Cordell Hull State Office Building and Central Services Demolition, New Construction and Renovation Project (Cordell Hull Renovation Project). To construct this connection, the two existing elevator shafts and a new emergency stairwell in the State Capitol were extended down to anew lobby area—the elevators by about 50 feet (15.2 m) and the stairwell by about 60 feet (18.3 m). This lobby was connected to the CHB by a 435-foot-long (133 m) pedestrian tunnel. It was predicted that most of the tunnel would be excavated in a relatively strong limestone; therefore, considering the project features and constraints, drill-and-blast techniques were selected as the primary excavation method. Because of restrictions on blasting in urban areas and, more importantly, the proximity of this construction to national historic landmarks, blasting operations were extensively monitored to measure and correlate ground vibrations as peak particle velocity (PPV), frequency, and strain—these being the major factors that would impact the surrounding buildings. As a result, copious amounts of data were gathered and interpreted within a short time to estimate blasting parameters and optimize the subsequent blast rounds. To calculate the ground response factor, the scaled distance of each shot was compared to the ground vibration as PPV, generating a subsequent regression curve with an R2value of about 0.7. Using the best fit curve equation, the estimated ground response factor was about 150 for the best fit line. Other than some cases with relatively high (> 2 in./sec [51 mm/sec]) recorded PPV values, the blasting operation was successfully conducted as planned and the observed strain on the monitored buildings was very low, mainly within ±2 με (0.0002% elongation). (In general, the recorded PPV was lower than 2 in./sec at frequencies of more than 50 Hz.). The strain gauges at key locations (cold joints and old fractures) in the Capitol and on other critical structures demonstrated strain was insignificant in relationship to ground vibrations from the blasting operations. The apparently small vibration-induced strains were related to the massive limestone construction of the Capitol and ancillary buildings, as the induced strain plus the existing strain did not exceed the critical strain of the massive structures.

As mobile equipment electrification in underground mining continues to gain popularity, control ofheat and humidity in the workplace is becoming a key driver in sizing of ventilation and mine aircooling systems. For design and sizing of ventilation and cooling systems to be accurate, and for themine mobile equipment fleet to be sized appropriately to meet production goals, vehicle productivitymetrics, heat modelling, and energy balances for electrified fleets need to consider operation througha realistic duty cycle that is reflective of various tasks performed during a shift.The authors conducted a real-world comparison of two 8 cubic yard (14 metric tonne) class Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) machines – one diesel and one battery-electric vehicle (BEV) – performingidentical muck-haul-dump operations on consecutive days at an underground nickel/copper hardrock mine in Ontario, Canada.The battery-electric LHD averaged 8.9 per cent faster cycle time than the diesel vehicle (gross,without accounting for charging time), and was able to transport 25 per cent more material per cycledue to a larger bucket capacity. When including the charging time, average net cycle times wereequivalent for the two vehicles over the 200 cycles. The BEV carried more payload over the eighthour period due to the increased capacity per cycle.The testing identified an approximately five-fold reduction in heat output from the BEV in comparisonto the diesel LHD on a basis of heat output per tonne of rated bucket capacity. Heat output from thefast charger was found to be approximately 4 per cent of the charging rate, with negligibletemperature change observed in the main drift. External noise levels in the mine were found to be14 dB lower for the BEV during transit and 11 dB lower during bucket loading. Fuel/energy costs forBEV electricity input were approximately four times lower per operating hour than diesel fuel costbased on typical 2021 electrical and diesel unit rates for a grid-connected mine in Ontario, Canada.

A long history of gold production at Nome, Alaska has resulted in long term interest in the nearshore environment as a production target. Mining by Western Gold Exploration and Mining Company offshore of Nome yielded approximately 100,000 troy ounces of gold in the period 1986 through 1990. This study was designed to determine the relationship between heavy minerals, sediments, and gold concentrations which occur in the upper meter of sediment offshore of Nome. Standard procedures were implemented for grain size analysis, heavy mineral separations, and heavy mineral frequency determination.

This paper compares the predictions of the latest Institute of Makers of Explosives Safety Analysis for Risk (IMESAFR) model versus physical test data recovered from ISO-1 and ISO-2 tests in Woomera, SA. ISO-1 testing included placing 1054 kg (2324 lbs) of ANFO (ammonium nitrate-fuel oil) inside an ISO container on a flat bed truck. ISO-2 testing was identical except the NEW was 4000 kg (8818 lbs). The IMESAFR predictions are based on model runs using the best match available to the actual donor type involved in the test. This type of debris analysis is not the standard output of IMESAFR, as the program is designed to assess the probability of human fatality. However, all of the IMESAFR predictions presented were obtained from the use of the actual model equations and algorithms without adjustment. Test results from ISO-1 and ISO-2 will be presented as well as findings from the comparison between model results and actual explosive results from the ISO testing efforts.

The JKRBT (JK Rotary Breakage Tester) is a newly developed impact breakage testing device for rapid ore breakage characterisation, and has recently been commercialised after a three year comprehensive validation study, involving five major mining companies and six industrialised JKRBT units deployed worldwide. Comparisons of breakage mechanisms and characterisation data between the JKRBT and the Drop Weight Tester (DWT) indicate that, despite the differences in the breakage modes, the JKRBT can provide statistically similar A*b parameters, by using a data reduction procedure which takes into account the difference in the number of contact points, strain rate and potential for secondary breakage. Feedback from the validation sponsors has indicated higher productivity and better repeatability of the JKRBT compared with the DWT. This better precision, combined with the JKRBT?s wider particle size capability and wider specific energy range, provide a more powerful tool, ideally suited to rapid mapping of ore hardness in geometallurgical and comminution applications.

INTRODUCTION From a tax viewpoint, United States mining companies are at a substantial disadvantage in the international mining area compared with companies in other major capital-exporting countries, according to a 1975 study by Coopers & Lybrand for the American Mining Congress. The study compared the relative tax position of a United States investor with investors from Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The comparison was based on average rates of return realizable by investor companies on four mine-model investments in twelve capital-importing countries. The countries in which these investments were assumed to be made are varied in their tax systems so that a wide range of possibilities was included in the analyses. Each mine model was standard so that the rates of return for each investment by each investor were affected solely by the respective tax systems of the capital-exporting and capital-importing countries. UNITED STATES POSITION The study found that the United States competitive position, in terms of the average rate of return on an overall basis, ranked next to last among the nine capital-exporting countries in the study. Further, the United States overall rate of return is more than 20% below that of the country (Japan) with the highest overall rate of return. On an average return-on-equity basis, the United States&apos; position among the nine investor countries, for each of the mine investments studied, was: copper, eighth; iron ore, sixth; nickel, fifth; manganese, a tie for last place. Figure 1 shows the overall results realized by each capital-exporting country on the basis of average return on equity. [ ] The frequency with which a given capital-exporting country attains the highest or next highest rate of return in a capital-importing country provides further insight and another basis for comparing the tax laws of the capital-exporting countries. Of the situations compared in the study, the United States never attained the highest rate of return, and reached the second and third highest rate of return in only two instances. The tables showing the frequencies of rankings are given in Table 1 for each of the four mine models. In summary, the United States mining company does not have a competitive advantage under the tax rules when competing for mineral concessions in other countries. The United States company, in fact, appears to be at a clear disadvantage. The study also considered the effect of the following recent tax proposals on United States investors in international mining ventures:

A residential structure adjacent to a quarry in Ohio was instrumented to record structure motions, resulting wall strains and existing crack displacements in response to close-in blasting within 82 m (270 ft). The project is a cooperative effort among international experts representing the European Federation of Explosives Engineers (EFEE) and ISEE supported by more than 21 persons from eight different countries to compliment prior work performed at the Aitik Mine in northern Sweden. The focus of this study is to compare blast-induced vibration measurements relative to regulatory compliance limits as a percentage of allowable velocities among eight different countries for a one-story residential wood-frame structure with a brick-and-mortar exterior and full basement. Participating counties included Austria, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US). Geophones were placed on the foundation and in the ground in accordance with each country’s regulations to record peak velocities as a function of frequency or distance to blasting. This study extends the work performed at the Aitik Mine to include interior corner geophones to calculate global wall strains and micro-m (micro-in) displacement gauges mounted over an existing drywall crack to measure blast-induced dynamic crack responses and climatological influences on daily opening and closing of a crack. Structure responses were documented for 68 blasts conducted north of the structure from February through September 2023 of which 17 blasts were selected for detailed analyses. The highest in-ground PPVs recorded were 43 mm/s and 59 mm/s at the NE and SW corners, respectively. Measurements from these blasts plotted within each country’s limits provided a comparison of stringency among the counties. The percentage of compliance limits among counties ranged from an average of 114% for the US, UK, and Austria limits to the highest of 585% for Switzerland. Despite these high percentages of compliance for all countries, the global tensile strains induced by these blasts were at most only 12 μ-strains and occurred with the highest velocity blast that exceeded each county’s limit. This high percentage of compliance and low strain level demonstrates the restrictive nature of the regulations studied. Peak dynamic crack opening and closing during blasting averaged 20 -m (0.0008 in) while the 12-hour weather-induced crack displacement during the time period over which blasting occurred averaged 200 -m (0.008 in) and the largest 12-hr change in crack width was 356 -m. This low level of crack response validates the observation that the studied regulations have highly conservative limits for cracking potential of standard building materials.

"In a country with a cold climate like Canada, the cost of replacing worn parts of snowplow equipment such as blades, is enormous. A great number of these blades, with different mechanical properties, are available, but few studies have been made to facilitate their selection according to the optimum ratio of wear resistance to cost. To attain this objective, laboratory tests have been developed to correlate test results with those obtained from various road service conditions. The test materials, 1080steel in different states, 1090steel and D2 tool steel were chosen to cover a large range of hardness as well as different microstructures. Comparison of the wear resistance of the test materials relative to a standard revealed, in general, a good correlation between the results of laboratory cement wheel tests and those from the road tests. Scanning electron microscope wear scars of laboratory and road test specimens were compared to determine if similar removal material mechanisms were active. IntroductionThe correlation between wear tests in service and those performed with the aid of laboratory equipment is of considerable interest. As a matter of fact, when correlation exists, it allows one to evaluate the performance of a material more easily and at a lesser cost.Several authors have been interested in simulating various wear circumstances, especially abrasive wear. In particular, the simulation of wear on implements working the soil, has been tried by several researchers. The test using the rubber wheel seems to be the one giving the best correlation if the soil is rather sandy and its moisture content is low.However, little work has been done concerning wear on the plates, skids and blades attached to trucks used for levelling and snowplowing; such equipment being used to keep roads clear in northern countries. Now each year, companies introduce new steels by claiming that the y are superior in performance to their predecessor s and invariably they demand a higher cost. The study presented here was undertaken with the goal of making a more judicious choice of these steels by simulating their behaviour in the laboratory. Moreover, the examination of abraded surfaces in situ and in the laboratory have also allowed us to compare the respective wear mechanisms."

Deep Vibro Techniques namely Vibro Compaction (VC) and Vibro Replacement (VR) are widely used in ground improvement to densify sands and strengthen cohesive soils. This paper describes the application of these techniques for the construction of 20 Ha Iron Ore Stockpile Yard with the maximum stockpile height of 14 m in Quang Ngai, Vietnam. The challenges of this project are to limit the stockpile allowable settlement and the surrounding pile’s lateral movement. The soil condition can be summarized as 12m – 18m thick of loose to medium dense SAND with qc around 5-18MPa and followed by 2.0 – 6.0 m thick soft clay with qc around 0.4 – 0.8MPa. Localized very dense sand layer was found. VR using stone columns were installed in soft clay layer while VC was adopted to densify sand layer. Additional shallow stone columns were built in sand strata to minimize pile top lateral movement. The post construction performance was verified by a large 6 m by 12 m plate load test (PLT). The predicted PLT deformation using Priebe’s improved properties for the VR will be presented and compared with the measured plate load test results.
