E. Windsor Richards, London, England:—In reading this paper the most interesting point to me mas the question of the maximum percentage of phosphorus allowable in the steel rail. Mr. Colby said, and we will all agree with him, that the engineer knew, and even a steel-rail maker grants that phosphorus is the most undesirable constituent of steel. We in England have been for a long time considering a specification for the supply of steel rails. This matter has been taken up by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Mechanical Engineers, the Iron and Steel Institute, the Institute of Naval Architects, and the Electrical Engineers. Committees have been formed,and the whole matter has received most careful attention. They arrived at last at an analysis which I will read: " The carbon is to be from 0.35 to 0.5 per cent.; the manganese from 0.7 to 1.0 per cent.; the silicon, not to exceed 0.10 per cent.; phosphorus, 0.07; and sulphur, 0.07 per cent." As to the phosphorus, which is the most important point of all in the analysis, we have for many years, and indeed until very lately, always agreed to supply steel which would not contain above 0.06 per cent. of phosphorus. Iron-ores are not quite as good now as they were formerly, and the manufacturers at the meetings of the committees referred to, tried to obtain an increase in the allowance of phosphorus. They asked the Sub-committee to agree to 0.08 per cent. of phosphorus. They tried all they possibly could to obtain that; but they failed. English engineers in Great George Street and all over England, representing the important Associa tions I have mentioned, would only agree to 0.07 per cent. and that is the maximum allowance of phosphorus. Mr. Colby is an able advocate, but with all his ability he would not have been able to persuade the English engineers to agree to 0.08 per cent.

Albert SaUveur, Cambridge, Mass. (communication to the Secretary*):—On close examination I think it will be found that the evidence by which Mr. Corson claims to have shown the inaccuracy of a statement I made a few years ago, is far from convincing. This statement is: "Hot work as such has no influence upon the structure of the metal. Indirectly, however, by retarding crystallization until a lower temperature is reached, it may influence its structure most decidedly ; but the same results could be accomplished by heat treatment alone, i.e., by re-heating the unworked metal to the temperature from which the worked piece was allowed to cool undisturbedly." Of the two pieces of steel tested by Mr. Corson, one was worked and finished at a a cherry-red" and the other reheated to a cherry-red, and the assumption was made that in both cases the temperature was about 715' C., although no pyrometric device was used to record it. (communication to the Secretary*):—In my paper on the Conservation of Natural Resources, I referred to the slow replacement of bee-hive ovens by the by-product ovens as a most notable instance of waste. And I quoted from Mr. Parker's report for 1906 an explanation given by him in accounting for the small production of by-product coke. It was that the market for the by-products of the coke-ovens was so limited that some of the ovens constructed were out of operation. His report on the manufacture of coke in 1908' does not record an improvement, and attributes the strange fact that we alone, of all the industrial peoples, delay the adoption of this cardinal improvement from the continuance of the same almost inexplicable cause. F. Lynwood Garrison, Philadelphia, Pa. (communication to the Secretary): I have been specially interested in Mr. Drake's valuable contribution to our knowledge of the Chinese coalareas, as I had occasion, about a year ago, to make a reconnoissance over some of the coal-fields in the Yangtse river valley. I noticed, as he appears to have done, certain peculiarities which may eventually prove to be characteristic of the Chinese coal-measures, at least in central and northern China. The most striking feature, perhaps, is the invariable proximity of the great granite masses to those coal-deposits which have an anthracite character. In common with all other anthracite areas elsewhere, the Chinese show evidences of profound stratigraphical disturbances. The sedimentary rocks are folded, faulted and dislocated in a manner similar to those of the Pennsylvania anthracite-regions. It would seem that the intrusive granite had much to do with converting the original bituminous into present anthracite. The action of the granite was probably direct as a conveyor of heat, and indirect as dynamic force in dislocating, overturning, and compressing the coal-measures. My stay in China was unfortunately cut short, so that I was unable to collect fossils, or to give this highly interesting and important subject more than passing attention. Cholnoky* and Richthofen are practically agreed that these granite eruptions took place during the Tertiary period—probably the Eocene. This profound tectonic movement has had a most important effect upon the geological conditions in central and northern China, and will be, I am sure, a potent factor in the economic development. Evidences of disturbances and metamorphism are very abundant in the anthracite-areas of the Yangtse valley. I noticed the coal in them, as did Mr. Drake in northern China, to be often flaky and " slickensided."

Robert Schorr, San Francisco, Cal. (communication to the Secretary*):—In operatioils requiring the expenditure of fuel, it is solely a question of supplying a certain number of heat-units at certain temperature-conditions. The difficulty of controlling these temperature-conditions is mainly responsible for low efficiency, unless utilizable waste heat is carefully applied either for the pre-heating of the air necessary for combustion, or for the heating of the raw materials, or in other departments of the works to generate steam, etc. A high theoretical or thermal efficiency very often does not establish a high " commercial" efficieiicy, and this fact is responsible for apparent crude practice in many arts. Coal is still very cheap in the East, and oil sells in the West for less than anywhere else in the world. Despite these favorable conditions, I believe that the list of references given in E. C. Eckel's book,' and also the contributions of C. Naske,2 will show that Mr. Eldred's statement, that a the study of the phenomena of applied combustion has been neglected," is not justified as far as the burning of cement is concerned. I have investigated the heat-balance of a lirne-kiln ailci the commercial advantage of using generator-gas for calcination. Mr. Eldred proposes to calcine the materials in the present type of rotary kiln, gas-fired with long-flame combustion, and to Pdke the fritted calcines to a special, gas-fired clinkering-kiln, which shall embody heat-regenerators. Joseph W. RichaRds, South Bethlehem, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*): The hold experiment of Mr. James Gayley in drying the blast used in the Isabella furnace has attracted the attention of the whole metallurgical world, and has given rise to a wide discussion of the reasons for its great success. Mr. Gayley and the capitalists who backed him in his work deserve congratulations on the success of the venture, not only because it succeeded, but because they have been rewarded far beyond the maximum that could be expected from theory or probability. To state the case in its simplest terms, all that could have been predicted was: (1) that the removal of the moisture from the blaet would result in the saving of the heat required for its decomposition, representing from 3 to 5 per cent. of the heat-value of the coke used; hence about that quantity of fuel might be saved; (2) that the furnace would be somewhat more independent of variations in the weather; (3) that the campaign would be a little hotter; and (4) that the speed of the blowing-eugines would be decreased, at least in amount proportionate to the reduction in temperature of the air led to them. I do not think anyone anticipated a much larger output per day. The results actually attained were: (1) the furnace made an increase of 24.86 per cent. in the output of pig-iron per day; (2) it consumed 19.6 per cent. less coke per ton of pig-iron made; (3) the blowing-engines were run 15.8 per cent. slower; and (4) the saving in power made up for the power required to run the refrigerating-plant. A Discussion of the papers of James Gayley, on "The Application of Dry-Air Blast to the Manufacture of Iron" (see Trans., XXXV., 746, 1022, also pp. 315 and 745 of the present volume, and of J. E. Johnson, Jr., on "The Physical Action of the Blast-Furnace," p. 454. Chas. B. Dudley, Altoona, Pa.:—I am not a blast-furnace man, and this always puts me at a disadvantage because I cannot go into the details of the making of iron and steel. I have not the experience, and have to take the statements of other people, so what I say regarding the subject of this paper is not in the sense of an expert. When I first heard of Mr. Gayley's experiments, I said to myself, a I fear they will result in failure, since, apparently, Mr. Gayley has forgotten one chemical fact, namely, that carbon does not combine with oxygen in the absence of mater-vapor." This fact which was so astonishing when it was first brought out some years ago, and which those who are interested may find in the Journal of the Chemical Society of London, for 1885, page 349, and 1894, page 611, led me to think that the drying of the air would be a mistake. The general subject of the influence of water-vapor on chemical action is a large one; but the special point in which we are, for the moment, interested, namely, the influence of water-vapor on the combustion of carbon, was especially treated by Mr. H. B. Baker, in the papers referred to. Apparently, however, as the result of Mr. Gayley's experiments, we are to learn that the amount of moisture still left in the desiccated air is sufficient to secure perfectly satisfactory combustion. In thinking over Mr. Gayley's paper, it occurred to me that there were two alternatives, either of which might be chosen, namely, we might dry the air as Mr. Gayley does, or possibly we might, in a very much easier way, simply saturate the air at a constant temperature, and thus get uniform working and

AlfreD H. Cowles, Cleveland, Ohio (commuaication to the Secretary*):—Mr.Gillette's paper and his deductions seem to me of the very greatest importance, if the validity of his conclusions and figures can be confirmed. His work seems to solve an unfinished problem that I attempted to solve on the same lines about two years ago, at a time when I was preparing a paper' on another subject for the American Electrochemical Society. The following paragraph is quoted from the paper referred to: "I feel convinced that a further study of the heats of combination now known for so many compounds, which merely express in other terms their voltages of disruption, will show us the allowance that must be made as a departure from unity in the case of each element, for the intrinsic charge of its elementary molecule, and thereby render possible the creation of a table of apparent relative atomic capacities for electricity, similar to the table of atomic weights. R. H. Sweetser, Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. (communication to the Secretary*):—The recent work of furnace No. 1 of The Algoma Steel .Co., at Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, using for fuel, first all charcoal, then a mixture of charcoal and coke, and finally all coke, upsets the estimates given by Mr. Hall in the last two paragraphs of his interesting paper. Furnace No. 1 was built for a charcoal-furnace, and it was run on charcoal fuel from March 6 until July 9, 1905; then, for a week, a mixture of charcoal and coke was used, and, since then, coke alone has been the only fuel. It is to be regretted that at no time, during the run on charcoal, was there enough charcoal on hand and " in sight" to warrant blowing the furnace as hard as it should have been blown. During April and May the supply of charcoal limited the amount of blast to about 8,000 cu. ft. of air per min.; in June, to about 8,900 cubic feet. For a few days in July about 10,000 cu. ft. were blown, and then the maximum daily output, 173 tons (2,240 lb.), was reached. At all times the quality of the charcoal was poor, having been made from wood cut from three to four years before. Doubtless this furnace could have produced 200 tons of iron per day, even with this quality of charcoal, provided the supply had been sufficient; and with

T. Kirke Rose, London, Eng. (communication to the Secretary*) :—The authors have shown that, under certain conditions, the rate of dissolution of gold by chlorine and bromine is reduced by the addition of 10 per cent. of silver to the gold, and that the action is almost stopped when the silver amounts to 30 or 40 per cent. of the alloy. Even if full recognition is given to the practical way in which the work was done, however, it is to be regretted that Prof. Hofman and Mr. Magnusou did not determine the temperature at which the experiments were carried out. From the details given, it may be inferred that the temperature was raised by chemical action by about 20' C. when 21 g. of sulphuric acid was added, and that the mixture was then slowly cooled down during the experiment. When bromine or very weak chlorine solutions were used, there could not have been any perceptible heating-action. As the action of both chlorine and bromine is aided by heat, it follows that the stronger solutions of chlorine were given an unfair advantage over the weaker solutions, and over bromine. If the temperature had been the same in each case, I do not think that the conclusions deduced by Prof. Hofman and Mr. Magnuson' would have been found to be justified. (This is speaking generally. In barrel-treatment the conditions are similar to those in the experiments.) The superior speed of bromine as compared with chlorine at equivalent strengths is not yet disproved, and the differences noted between strong and weak solutions of chlorine may have been largely a function of the temperature. J. T. Pullon, Rowangarth, Roundhay, Leeds, England :— In discussing Mr. Lee's paper, I wish to call attention to the fact that Mr. B. II. Thwaite (who was heard here yesterday on the subject of the application of blast-furnace gas for the production of power, of which he was undoubtedly the pioneer) read, at the Engineering Congress in Glasgow in 1901, a paper on the profitable utilization of power from blast-furnace gases,' in which he suggested the diversion and cleaning of the whole of the waste gases coming from the blast-furnace and their utilization for power-production, so as to obtain, with proper manipulation, from 4 to 6 times the efficiency of present methods. He suggested also the heating of the stoves with producer-gas of a higher and therefore more suitable calorific value, so as to maintain them in a constant state of maximum efficiency, free from dust, and to avoid the irregular working of the furnace, besides obtaining a maximum supply of air-blast, of 15 or even 20 lb. pressure, by means of internal-conibustion blast-engines driven by the cleaned waste furnace-gases, with a surplus of gas left for other uses. Since that time, in view of the necessity of having a stand-by plant, immediately available, in case of strikes or other reasons causing the banking or blowing-out of the blast-furnace, he has developed, as an addition to his other types of producer, a high blast-pressure gas-generator, producing a gas identical with, or somewhat superior to, blast-furnace gas; and in which all the ash of the fuel is turned into fluid slag, which is available for, the production of slagwool. The gas is a little richer in carbon monoxide than average blast-furnace waste gas, and has only from 1 to 3 per cent. of hydrogen. E. T. Dumble, Houston, Texas (communication to the Secretary) : During the field-season of 1890 I had occasion to examine some of the salines of eastern Texas. As the result of my stridy of them I came to the conclusion that, together with the oil of Hardin county (since extended to Beaumont by the work of Capt. Lucas) and the rock-salt and gypsum-deposits of the coast country, extending southward to the Rio Grande, these were simply a continuation of similar deposits in Louisiana described by Hilgard, Hopkins, and others; and I recommended the sinking of wells wberever they were found.

Mark R. Lamb, Torres, Sonora, Mexico (communication to the Secretary*): I have read Mr. Merrill's paper with much interest, and cannot but accept his challenge as regards the cost of the clean-up at the Homestake mill. If I understand him correctly, the two men take the precipitates from the presses in about six hours, and do nothing towards refining them. If that is so, it would correspond to the work four men do here in about eight hours—that is, to clean the box and to place the precipitates in the driers. In order to make a fair comparison, the bullion in each case should be stated in ounces, since it is as diflicult to precipitate silver as gold, and our bullion is mostly silver. Bullion to the value of $50,000 is equivalent to a weight of about 2,500 oz. At our last clean-up eight standard bars, each 1,100 oz. in weight, were made, which equals a total weight of 8,800 oz'. Four men had the precipitates drying by 8 p.m. This plant, the Minas Prietas works of Charles Butters & Co., at Minas Prietas, has square-bottomed electrolytic vats, an arrangement which necessitates the handling of all the precipitates in buckets. The Butters plant at Virginia City, Nev., is equipped with conical vats, and probably could make a still better showing under similar conditions. Another point is that common labor only is required. (Ordinary laborer's wages at Minas Prietas are $0.70 gold.) I may say also that, except for the convenience of the refinery, the box could be cleaned monthly, instead of bi-monthly, at only a slight additional expense. The comparison, if made a few months ago, would have been much more in favor of the electrolytic process, as the tailings handled at that time contained a large quantity of copper, and the amount of zinc-dust required would have been enormous.

Edward Eeller, Baltimore, Md. (communication to the Secretary): Mr. Miller's improved method of the cyanide-assay for copper will, without doubt, be much appreciated by assayers and chemists who are engaged at copper mines and works. The writer, as one who, at one time, had much work of that kind to do, entertains no doubt of its practical value. In enumerating the factors which affect the accuracy of cyanide-titration, Mr. Miller omits to mention time. This I have always considered an essential one; i.e., in order to secure accuracy, I have believed it to be necessary to run the cyanidesolution at the same rate of speed in standardizing as in the titration of the samples. I have accomplished this, without the use of a time-keeper and without noticing the volume of the solution, in the following simple manner: In running the cyanide-solution from the burette, the stream was so regulated, by manipulation of the cock, that it retained its continuity for a distance of about one inch below the orifice, and, below that, broke into individual drops. This means that a constant pressure is maintained at the orifice of the burette, so that, during equal intervals of time, equal volumes of the solution pass through. The stream of cyanide-solution was left to flow in the manner indicated until the blue ammoniacal copper-solution began to show a distinct change in color, after which the cyanide was added by drops at regular intervals until the desired end-reaction. When several burettes are used they should have orifices of equal diameter; otherwise, the timefactor must be considered separately for each. In accordance with Mr. Miller's views, I have always considered the cyanide-method as of very satisfactory accuracy for all copper-assaying in which I did not employ the electrolytic method. H. W. Turner, San Francisco, Cal. (communication to the Secretary*): This excellent paper apparently represents the results of extensive observation and experience among the mines of the Mother-Lode, but I strongly question its relegation of the dioritic intrusions to the period of fissuring and ore-deposition. The dioritic rocks referred to are evidently those areas represented by Ransome in the Mother-Lode folio1 as meta-diorites, and, as he says, are merely basic facies of the great granodiorite batholite of the Sierra Nevada. If followed downward I venture to predict that these meta-diorite areas would be found to connect with the great batholite, and to be in fact mere apophyses of it. I see no reason for supposing that these apophyses were intruded into the Mother-Lode slates at a period later than the intrusion of the granodiorite in general. The period of fissuring was subsequent to this intrusion; the basic granodiorite or quartz-diorite areas of the foot-hill region are themselves fissured extensively; and the fissures were filled with quartz, apparently during the same general period of the formation of the Mother-Lode veins. Prichard and Ransome2 both refer to the deposition of quartz in the same lode at different periods resulting from a reopening of the fissures. Some time since, I saw in the stopes of the

H. 0. Hofman, Boston, Mass. (communication to the Secretary*) :—The experimental demonstration by Professor H. Ries, of the fact that a mixture of clay and finely-ground flux will melt more readily than one in which the flux is less fine and therefore less intimately mixed, is very striking, and will be appreciated especially by those who have to discuss, before classes of students, fusions on a small or a large scale. The statement, that I " rather disputed" the influence of size of flux-particles on the ease with which fire-clay mixtures fused, is an erroneous inference from the paper written by Mr. B. Stoughton and myself in 1898.' We did not undertake to study the influence upon fusibility of the sizes of the particles, either of clay or flux. What we did try to find out was, whether the common practice of finely grinding raw or burnt clay, or a mixture of the two, before testing with Seger cones for resistance to heat and to fluxes, xould give the same results as if the materials were tested just as they were going to be
