Shale gas wells drilled in longwall chain pillars are influenced by longwall mining. Longwall mining on each side of the chain pillars can create overburden movements and induce deformations in gas well casings. If the deformations result in a casing breach, intrusive shale gas could leak into the longwall mine with serious safety consequences. This study concerns five shale gas wells in the chain pillars between two adjacent longwall panels in the Pittsburgh coal seam under a cover depth of 670 ft and a mining height of 7 ft. The gas wells were constructed with typical casing design, but a casing cementing alternative with uncemented production casings was practiced. Four production casings were uncemented, and one production casing was unintentionally cemented with good quality cement to a 535-ft depth and low-quality cement stringers from a 444- to 535-ft depth. The longwall faces passed by the shale gas wells as each adjacent longwall panel retreated. Production casings were surveyed by a multi-finger caliper after each panel was mined. No deformation was detected in the four uncemented production casings, but small deformations were detected in the partially cemented production casing. The maximum measured deformation in the cemented production casing was 0.05 in. after first panel mining and 0.06 in. after second panel mining. The casing deformations were also predicted by the FLAC3D model set up on site-specific overburden geology. The predicted deformations were in good agreement with the measurements in terms of deformation locations and magnitudes. All five shale gas wells resumed normal production after being temporarily plugged during the period of mine-by. This study provides a successful demonstration of the effectiveness of a casing cementing alternative for decoupling production and intermediate casing, and thus minimizing the influence of longwall mining in the shale gas wells drilled through longwall chain pillars.

Casting imperfections, such as porosity, in cast aluminum components greatly influence their fatigue properties. The effect of porosity on the fatigue life of 319-F and A356-T6 aluminum alloys was studied, where the porosity characteristics on the fracture surfaces of fatigue-tested samples were examined using SEM and image analysis. The results show that porosity has the most detrimental effect on the fatigue life: 92 % of all tested samples fractured due to porosity acting as the main crack initiation site. In the absence of casting imperfections, other microstructural aspects such as slip bands can be responsible ( 4 % ). The porosity was investigated in terms of the pore size at the sample fracture surface and its location i.e. near the edge or close to the interior. It was found that porosity located far from the sample surface (edge) has less influence on the fatigue crack initiation, and the fatigue life decreases as the size of the pore located at the sample surface increases. "A three-dimensional finite-element heat-transfer model is conducted to predict temperature of hot copper plate in a slab continuous casting mold and the effect of casting speed on temperature difference between copper plate and solidifying shell is simulated in combination with process data. The results show that centre temperature of hot copper surface at casting speed 1.8 m·min-1 and 2.0 m·min-1 are higher than that of 1.6 m·min-1 casting speed 4.7-5.2 °C and 11.2-12.2 °C respectively and temperature is not increased linearly with casting speed. Temperature difference in meniscus between mold and shell is influenced obviously by casting speed and increased 4.0- 6.0 °C with increment of casting speed 0.2 m·min-1• Fluctuation of temperature difference in meniscus is a main reason to deteriorate casting quality as increasing casting speed.IntroductionIn conventional continuous casting of steel, a large amount of sensible and latent heat of molten steel dissipates in primary cooling zone and mold becomes a critical component of caster to govern steel quality, meanwhile, thermal load on mold is increased constantly and environment is also more abominable since high productivity and quality are required and high-effective technologies are applied. So, an in-depth understanding of thermal behavior of mold at high casting speed is essential to design cooling structure and maintain casting stability. Many studies have been carried out to shed light on thermal behavior in mold. Chow et al. [l] applied a mathematical model to heat transfer in billet mold at a high casting speed to give a new taper in order to minimize mold-strand interaction. Thomas et al. [2] researched relation between mold geometry and temperature distribution based on a finite-element heat-transfer model. Lu et al. [3] indicated that slab mold temperature are mainly affected by thickness of copper plate and nickel layer by a heat transfer model. Samarasekera et al. [4, 5] researched temperature of copper plates for both billet and slab molds and effect of a large number of factors ranging from water quality to casting speed. Park and Thomas et al. [6, 7] developed a finite-element thermal-stress model to determine temperature and thermal distortion and stress in both thin and slab molds and O'Connor et al. [8] applied an elastic-plastic-creep finite-element model in a funnel shaped mold to achieve same goals. Cicutti et al. [9] evaluated heat transfer and temperature fluctuation in a slab mold and proposed an expression to predict global heat flux as a function of process parameters and an index to quantify thermal instability. All mentioned above shown that thermal behavior is not only important to casting stability, it is also premise to further understand mechanical behavior in mold."

Thiosulfate leaching has been considered as the most promising alternative to cyanidation for the recovery of gold from ores. The chemistry of the ammonia-thiosulfate-copper system is complicated due to the simultaneous presence of complexing ligands such as ammonia and thiosulfate, the Cu(II)-CU(I) redox couple and the stability of thiosulfate in solution. However, acceptable gold leaching rates can be achieved by maintaining suitable concentrations of thiosulfate, ammonia, cop-per and oxygen in the leach solution. The leaching of gold in thiosulfate solution is an electrochemical reaction involving the oxidation of gold to gold thiosulfate and the reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I). Previous studies have shown that the reaction rate of gold was much higher in the presence of am-monia thiosulfate than corresponding sodium thiosulfate. This indicates that cations may affect the anodic oxidation of gold in thiosulfate solution. The present study utilises electrochemical tech-niques to study the anodic oxidation of gold in thiosulfate medium in the presence of the different alkali metal and alkaline earth metal ions. It has been shown that the presence of the heavier cations such as potassium, calcium, and caesium enhance the oxidation of gold in thiosulfate solution. Leaching tests also indicated the improved recovery of gold from a sulfide ore with the addition of heavier cations. XPS results demonstrated that the binding energy for gold shifted to lower values in the presence of the heavier cations, indicating the ready formation of ion-pair with gold thiosulfate at the gold surface during adsorption.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of an eventual slab central macro-segregation in microalloyed steels with low Mn content (0.80%) and high Nb content (0.08 to 0.10%) on the kinetics of recrystallization of austenite during its rolling, on its critical temperatures, that is, of non-recrystallization (Tnr), start Ar3 and finish Ar1 of ferrite transformation and its response to a simulated industrial thermomechanical processing. The determination of the austenite recrystallization kinetics was made through isothermal double compression tests using a dilatometer, while the critical temperatures were determined through hot torsion tests in a Gleeble® 3800. It was found that austenite recrystallization kinetics, Ar3 and Ar1 temperatures did not present significant changes for the samples extracted both at ¼ of the thickness and at the core of the plate, indicating that, as expected, the central segregation in this type of steel was not intense to the point of affecting this phenomenon. The Tnr values determined for the samples extracted in the core of the plate were, on average, 30°C lower than those obtained from specimens extracted at ¼ thickness, which suggests that a significant portion of the carbonitrides present in the core of the slab are eutectic and coarse, not having completely dissolved during the reheating of the specimens. This occurred despite the fact that the austenitization temperature adopted in this treatment theoretically leads to the total dissolution of Nb, as seems to have occurred in the case of specimens extracted at ¼ of thickness, where carbonitrides have a finer size.

For the past century, the so-called aluminum bronzes have been assuming a role of ever-increasing importance in the metallurgical field. The last quarter of that century has marked many efforts to find alloying elements that would alleviate some of the undesirable qualities of the aluminum bronzes-for example, the heterogeneity of the alpha solid solution and the extreme hardness of the beta. Much of this work, however, has been rather haphazard-compositions and heat treatment are usually so much at variance as to make comparison impossible. It is the object of this research to study the effect of certain percentages of common alloying elements on aluminum bronzes of analogous compositions and heat treatments. It is hoped that the material gathered here will at least serve as a basis for further systematic study.

THE elements silver, cadmium, tin, antimony and tellurium either are found as impurities in commercial coppers or are intentionally added to produce coppers for special uses, When present in small quantities, each of these metals exerts a significant effect on the properties of copper, but despite considerable experience and investigation much remains to be learned about their specific behavior. The presence of extraneous elements, particularly oxygen, complicates the study of individual additions of impurities in the range 0 to 0.05 per cent, and the use of high-purity copper has been found extremely helpful in circumventing these difficulties. It has also been found that individual behavior can be satisfactorily determined from measurements of two commercially important properties, conductivity and softening temperature, according to methods that have been described previously.1,2 Data of this type, obtained in the course of a general investigation of the effects of impurities on the properties of both oxygen-bearing and oxygen-free copper are presented herewith. All samples except those containing cadmium were prepared as 3/8-in. continuously cast oxygen-free rod from pure copper and weighed amounts of a similarly synthesized master alloy. Composition was checked by chemical methods, which in every case verified the calculated analyses. Test wires were cold-drawn one B. and S. number per pass on a string-up machine using four 30-min. 600°C. anneals at 0.3125, 0.257, 0.204 and 0.162 in. and a final cold reduction of 75 per cent to 0.081 in. Some oxygen-bearing samples were produced directly from the 3/8-in. oxygen-free rods by diffusion from a surface scale at 850°C. and drawn to size as listed above, but most of the alloys were remelted in pure graphite and cast through air into a I-in. round mold, The slugs were then hot-rolled to 5/16 in., drawn to 0.162 in., annealed as listed above, and drawn to 0.081 inch. Conductivity wires were annealed for I hr. at 100°C. intervals between 300° and 800°F., using a hydrogen atmosphere for oxygen-free samples and purified nitrogen for the oxygen-bearing type, All samples were quenched from the annealing temperature in 10 per cent H2SO4 and conductivity was measured on a Hoopes bridge that had been checked against a Kelvin bridge. Bentonite is an important industrial mineral with very wide application areas. Its unique colloidal, swelling, thickening and adsorption properties make it a useful agent in drilling, metal casting, and iron ore pelletizing, environmental, food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and many more industries. Because of its swelling property, bentonite suspensions can only be prepared at rather low solid coentrations, i.e. 8-10%. In order to process bentonite in slurries with high solid content, it was thought that a non-polar organic solvent, instead of water, can be used. Not only large amounts of bentonite can be dispersed in organic solvents but also the solvents may be regenerated. The bentonite obtained through such a process must either equal or better properties than those of untreated bentonite. In this study, the effect of organic solvents such as acetone, methyl-ethyl ketone and n-haxane on the main properties of bentonite, such as water adsorption and rheology, was investigated. A series of batch flotation tests was performed on chalcopyrite-quartzite, pyrrhotite-quartzite, and on chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-quartzite mixtures. Pulp potential measurements in the flotation tests of single sulfide minerals indicated that each sulfide mineral had its own optimum potential range for flotation. When these results were used to select the potential ranges for the separation of the two minerals from their mixture, their flotation responses changed and the selectivity of separation was adversely affected. A possible mechanism involving surface alteration through galvanic interaction is discussed. A method to improve the selectivity of flotation separation was proposed.

"Accounting for changing duty cycles in equipment matching maximizes equipment utilization and productivity. The objective of this study is to investigate if the optimal number of shuttle cars for a particular panel width is optimal in different segments of the panel. In this study, discrete event simulation (DES) is used to determine the optimal number of cars that maximizes productivity in each segment. Data from a real-life mine is used to validate the model. The study shows that the optimal number of cars for the entire panel may not be optimal for some of the defined segments. INTRODUCTION Fleet optimization is important for efficient mine management. Deploying the optimal fleet minimizes the capital and operating expenditure for particular operating conditions and production targets. In an operating mine, with an already existing fleet, deploying the optimal fleet maximizes productivity or minimizes production cost with the available resources. Hence, a lot of research has focused on how to determine the optimal fleet size for a mining operation, given particular operating conditions. Mine managers and engineers have successfully used discrete event simulation (DES) to determine the optimal fleet size in mines (Michalakopoulos, Roumpos, Galetakis, & Panagiotou, 2015; Awuah-Offei, Osei, & Askari-Nasab, 2011; Ben-Awuah, Kalantari, Pourrahimian, & Askari-Nasab, 2010; Govinda Raj, Vardhan, & Rao, 2009; Yuriy & Vayenas, 2008; Kwame Awuah-Offei, Temeng, & Al-Hassan, 2003). In most cases, the published work on this topic involves determining the number of hauling units to be matched to a loading unit. Many of these examples involve truck-shovel optimization. There are, however, some underground mining examples. For instance, we recently concluded work that involves fleet optimization in underground room and pillar (R&P) coal mining (Awuah-Offei & Anani, 2015). Generally, when DES is used in fleet optimization it involves three steps: (1) Build a valid model of the mining system capable of predicting the required outputs with varying fleet composition; (2) Design and conduct experiments that vary the fleet composition across all feasible options; and (3) Determine the optimal fleet based on the results of the simulation experiments. A major decision in the first step is which outputs should be modeled. Some examples in the literature include productivity, unit cost, loader utilization, queue length, and hauler waiting times (Awuah-Offei et al., 2011; Govinda Raj et al., 2009; Kwame Awuah-Offei et al., 2003). Often, more than one of these outputs are simulated and considered as the objective function of the optimization."

A numerical model has been developed to study the air flow in the flow plate and gas diffusion layer assembly on the cathode side of a PEM fuel cell. The flow plate in this type of fuel cell often has serpentine channels and the porous layer is adjacent to the flow plate to diffuse the air to the catalyst layer. Flow cross-over of air through the porous diffusion layer from one part of the channel to another can occur. This flow cross¬over is a result of the pressure differences between different parts of the channel, and it causes the flow rate through the channel to vary with the distance along the channel. A numerical study of pressure distribution and flow cross-over through the gas diffusion layer (GDL) in PEMFC flow field using a serpentine channel system has therefore been undertaken to compare the cases of a single channel and two parallel channels, with the channels having a trapezoidal cross-sectional shape. The purpose of the present work was to study the effect of the flow plate geometry on the basic fluid flow through the plate. The flow here has been assumed to be three-dimensional, steady, incompressible, isothermal and single-phase. The flow through the porous diffusion layer has been described using the Darcy model. The dimensionless governing equations have been solved by using the commercial CFD solver, FIDAP. From the results obtained, it can be found that the single channel systems have greater maximum flow rate difference than the parallel channel systems under the conditions considered in the present study. Also, the size ratio R of trapezoidal cross-sectional shape has a significant effect on the flow cross-over and pressure variation in the flow field.

A mass of Al2O3 tends to form during the continuous casting process of high manganese high aluminum steel, and the properties of mould flux and the quality of slab are seriously affected. The dissolution rate of Al2O3 into the CaO–SiO2–MgO–Al2O3–F−−Na2O−Li2O−BaO−B2O3 slag system has been investigated at 1573 K by employing rotating cylinder method. This paper focuses on the effect of Na2O, Li2O, B2O3, F−, Al2O3 contents and (CaO+BaO)/(Al2O3+SiO2) ratio on the dissolution rate. Experimental results show that the dissolution rate increases with increasing Na2O, Li2O, B2O3 contents and decreasing Al2O3 content, among which Li2O has the greatest effect on increasing dissolution rate; the dissolution rate increases with increasing F− content in slag A-1, but decreases with that in slag A-2; the dissolution rate increases with (CaO+BaO)/(Al2O3+SiO2) ratio within the range from 0.91 to 1.31. The dissolution rate of Al2O3 into molten flux is mainly affected by the viscosity of the molten flux and the thermodynamic driving force.

"The aluminum industry generates about 90 million tonnes of red mud each year. Previous research shows it could be utilized as a refining flux with a high capacity to absorb phosphorus and sulphur from hot metal in the steel industry. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the melting properties of such fluxes, as it affects the effectiveness of the flux. The results show that the melting behavior of red mud is strongly affected by lime addition and the characteristic melting/softening temperatures reach minimum VALUES (at 32.7 wt% CaO. From these findings, a correlation was established between melting behavior and optical basicity. This allows one to adjust the composition of the flux based on the process requirements. INTRODUCTIONThe aluminum industry generates about 90 million tonnes of bauxite residues each year. This residue is usually red in color because it contains a substantial amount of iron oxide. The red mud, as it is called, is a solid waste with a high concentration of sodium oxide, high pH (10 to 13), and high alkalinity, and thus is harmful to many forms of life. Traditionally, the material is stored in large tailings ponds within the plant’s vicinity (Power, Grafe, & Klauber, 2009). Development of solutions for safe disposal or preferably using this residue for other industrial processes or applications could help restore polluted locations and eliminate a negative impact on the environment (Haake, 1988; Power et al., 2009; Yan & Xuegong, 2010).The mineralogy and chemical composition of red mud depends on the quality of the bauxite and refining process parameters. In general, it consists of iron oxide (Fe2O3), aluminum oxide (Al2O3), titanium oxide (TiO2), sodium oxide (Na2O), silicon oxide (SiO2), and calcium oxide (CaO) (Power et al., 2009). Like most ores and soils, bauxite can contain trace quantities of metals such as arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, and naturally-occurring radioactive materials, such as thorium and uranium. Most of these trace elements stay in the residue (Power et al., 2009)."

Coal properties that are associated with wear and damage of grinding equipment during pulverization prior to combustion were investigated. A South African Highveld feed coal and its beneficiated fractions were crushed to <1 >0.25 mm particles for the grindability tests. These particles were milled and screened into <75 μm and >75 μm fractions, which were analysed by different techniques to establish a correlation with the conventional Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI). The <1.5 g.cm-3 float fraction, which contained 93 vol.% (mineral matter free) total -macerals,9% kaolinite, and had the lowest HGI (57) (hardest to grind) was pulverized for 15, 30, 60, and 120 minutes for particle size distribution analysis. This analysis indicated that the content of <75 μm particles increases with increased grinding time. The >1.9 g.cm-3 sink fraction, with the highest HGI (76), 44% kaolinite, and 20 vol.% total macerals, was ground easily to generate the highest proportion of <75 μm particles. Based on higher correlation coefficients (R2 = 0.77–0.91), the ash yield, mineral matter, petrographic composition, and fixed-carbon have significant effects on the HGI. Conversely, the inherent moisture and total sulphur (R2 = 0.48–0.62) have only minor effects on the HGI. Results from this investigation could be implemented in the preparation of a suitable pulverized fuel with little equipment wear, as well as utilizing mineralogical and petrographic compositions. Finally, the effect of microlithotypes and maceral types in South African feed coals on the HGI should be investigated in further pulverization and grindability studies.

Cost analysis of chrome ore reduction is one of the important issues facing ferrochrome producers in today?s competitive environment. Much of this depends on quality and various ratios in the actual ore. The latter can have a direct bearing on electricity consumption and optimum efficiency of the furnaces. While the industry has been successful in reducing costs by designing larger and more efficient furnaces, the role of the optimum blend of ore has perhaps been given less emphasis. This paper will discuss the general specification and metallurgical characteristics of various chrome ores for producing high carbon ferrochromium on industrial scale. By analysing the results obtained from smelting, including chromium recovery and energy consumption, the determining parameters in total cost of ferrochromium i.e. chrome ore; reductant and energy consumption can be optimized. Our study is based on actual experiences obtained from Faryab Ferroalloy Plant over a period of approximately three years.

The reactivity of clay minerals and variety of these reactions are greater than any other known colloidal material. While it is acknowledged that clay minerals can cause problems in mineral flotation, the literature contains conflicting evidence, particularly with respect to the effect of clays on froth stability. It is well known that achieving and maintaining optimum froth stability is an influential factor in determining froth flotation performance. However, the presence of clay minerals in the ore is a major challenge to obtaining a stable froth. In fact, clay minerals could reduce froth flotation performance by both decreasing and increasing froth stability. The mechanism by which clay minerals affect froth stability is not fully understood and needs to be investigated further. In order to improve flotation performance, reliable knowledge of the effect of clay minerals on froth stability is essential which is discussed in this paper. SLAG weights were taken on a series of twenty-eight 6-ton bottom-pour heats. These weights varied from 573 to 1050 lb. Of these, four were chosen for study of the effect of cleaned and uncleaned foundry scrap on the variations of slag weights. Data regarding the make-up and results of the heats are given in Table I. For heat No. 3 the actual slag weight was checked, using the Mn-MnO calculation method-weight 1050 lb. "A lot of incorrect, dangerous and misleading statements about the effect of CO2 on the human body can still be found in the internet, the media and in books. It is a fact that already low concentrations can lead to critical reactions, higher concentrations cause a narcosis. The real effect is not a lack of oxygen but an inner suffocation. The breathing reflex is decreased and the transport of oxygen in the blood is reduced due to a low pH value of the blood. Furthermore a reduced oxygen content in the air can also lead to the failure of diesel engines. MOTIVE Different gases can appear in active mines as well in abandoned mines, adits and caves. The most dangerous gases are CO, NO/NO2, H2S, SO2, CH4 and CO2. Although the general danger arising from these gases is mostly known some aspects are underestimated. Furthermore misleading or wrong statements exist about the detection and the effect of gases on the human body. This is especially true for CO2. In the last years a couple of accidents happened with a great number of injured persons and unfortunately also some fatalities. As a result wrong information and comments about the effect of CO2 have been published in the media. A huge unexpected CO2 outburst in a potash mine showed again some additional problems and limits for rescue troops. ORIGIN OF CO2 AND MISLEADING STATEMENTS ABOUT THE EFFECT ON THE HUMAN BODYCarbon dioxide can appear as free gas in the earth crust. It is especially known in significant concentrations in some potash deposits, in hard coal mines and some caves. Furthermore it can be formed due to complete oxidation of carbon. It can appear in technical processes. It is also used for or in technical processes, as fire extinguishing agent, as cooling agent, it is contained (added) in sparkling water or other soft drinks and it is formed by fermentation processes. Up to today a lot of wrong information about the effect of CO2 on the human body is published or is still in the mind of many people and unfortunately even in the mind of members or leaders of rescue troops. On August 16th 2008 a faulty CO2 extinguishing installation in the city of Mönchengladbach/Germany caused the injury of 107 people and the evacuation of further 150 people /1/. People on the streets became unconsciousness and felt down. Fortunately all could be rescued due to the immediate rescue operation of local fire fighters. Furthermore the CO2 concentration on the ground was diminished by help of a helicopter. What could have happen with the engine will be discussed later. After 6 days a second similar accident took place /2/. In the news members of the rescue teams explained that CO2 leads to suffocation due to a lack of oxygen. This is wrong! Also cave explorers often say that a burning candle can detect a low oxygen and/or high Carbon dioxide content in the air. This is also wrong and deadly dangerous! Similar statements we find nowadays in the internet /3, 4 and many other/. In a forum “science and mathematics > chemistry” several people say that winegrowers go with a candle into the vine-cellar to detect CO2 /5/. Again: this can be deadly! Another dangerous statement is that CO2 in higher concentrations leads to headaches so people should leave such areas. Water for domestic consumption is an essential right of society, which must be over secured. Water reclamation and reuse provides a unique and viable opportunity to augment traditional water supplies. As a multi-discipline and important element of water resource development and management, water reuse can help to close the loop between water supply and wastewater disposal. Effective water reuse requires integration of water and reclaimed water supply functions. During the coal mining activities, large quantities of water get contaminated and loses its potability characteristics. On an average, in coal mine operation, each coal mine discharges effluents at a rate of nearly 0.5 MGD and thereby wastage of nearly 50 MGD of water takes place per day from the famous Jharia Coal Field of the Dhanbad District. In this paper, attempt has been made to control the extremely high turbidity of mine waste water by using different coagulants and it is observed that ferrous sulphate is the most effective coagulants followed by alum, ferric sulphate and lime. Also combinations of coagulants are used for getting the optimal results. Further steps were also discussed to make this water potable and a scheme of low cost water supply system of mine waste water has been suggested under the Water Management Strategies. Extraction under very mild conditions - a few minutes at room temperature with poor solvents - yields results characteristic of surface properties for a variety of coals. Such superficial extractions preferentially remove long-chain aliphatic compounds. As coal becomes more oxidized, less of these yellow- colored compounds is extracted, forming the basis for a simple colorimetric test for coal surface quality. The fact that these aliphatic compounds are responsible for surface hydrophobicity is supported by good correlation between extraction results and floatability, which decreases with decreasing extractability. This extraction test is very sensitive to oxi dationb even the effect of heating for an hour at 100 C can be detected. A second extraction test using mild alkali conditions has shown good correlation with plant dewatering Operations.
