The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining-maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may he what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will he saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining-reports, naps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

Quantitative mineralogy is an established discipline in the geosciences and is aimed at providing mineral grade and texture information for geological and mineral processing applications. The two core technologies underpinning Quantitative Mineralogical Analysis (QMA) are Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) in combination with Energy-dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Technologies such as QEMSCAN and MLA are now routinely used to optimise the performance of large-scale mineral processing plants in the base and precious metal sectors. One of the major disadvantages of the QMA methods used today is extensive sample preparation requirements which make application of this technique to real-time mineralogical characterization not feasible. A breakthrough has been achieved by the National Research Council Canada in collaboration with CRC ORE by developing a novel Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) based technology capable of real-time mineralogical characterization of process streams without sample preparation. The potential applications of this technology include, but not limited to, in-pit muck piles, underground draw points, cross-belt analysis as well as slurries. This paper describes the development of the LIBS-based technology from a proof-of-concept (TRL2) to the construction of a prototype sensor and its validation in a simulated environment (TRL5). Future work is being planned to test and further validate the LIBS sensor on a mine-site which will progress the technology to its next readiness level (TRL6).

PURSUANT to a recommendation made by the Section delegates at their conference at the Annual Meeting of the A.I.M.E. last February, the Directors, at their meeting on March 15, 1944, appointed a committee charged with the duty of investigating the present status of licensing and registration of engineers, and to make a report on the whole subject for the information of the mining fraternity. The committee consisted of E. W. Ellis, chairman, H. D. Keiser, Henry T. Mudd, J. J. Croston, and Simon Strauss. Messrs. Keiser and Strauss were unable to assist in the work of the committee, and Mr. Mudd was forced to resign in July, his place being taken by A. F. Greaves-Walker. Able assistance was given the committee by T. Keith Legare, executive secretary of the National Council of State Boards of Engineering Examiners, and by Ed. ward Larson, executive secretary of the National Society of Professional Engineers. The accompanying somewhat condensed version of the report of Mr. Ellis's committee, dated Oct. 15, 1944, is confined to facts rather than to recommendations. The "Model Law" to which reference is made was first drafted by repre¬sentatives of six national engineering societies in 1911. It has since been amended many times, the latest version dated June 1943 is recommended to the State Licensing Boards as a pattern for formulating or amending state laws. JUDGE Samuel E. Schull, in the Court of Quarter Sessions of Monroe County, Pa., handed down a decision on July 2, declaring the Pennsylvania law for the Licensing of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors to be in violation of the Constitution of the State of Pennsylvania and also of the 14th amendment of the Constitution of the United States. The case was that of George E. Stevenson, who was arrested in June, 1922, charged with the practice of the profession of land surveying without first obtaining a state license. Mr. Stevenson had had forty years of practical experience as an engineer and land surveyor, and as set forth in the findings "had attained unusual skill, distinction and reputation in his said profession, and, on said date and for a considerable period thereto-fore and down to the present time, was and is President of the Engineer's Society of Northern Pennsylvania." That part of the decision referring to the unconsti-tutionality of the act is quoted in full as follows: This matter now comes on to be heard on argument as to the constitutionality of the said Act of May 25, 1921, P. I. 1131. The defendant urges that the same is unconstitutional: First: Because it is in violation of Article 3, Section 3, of the Constitution of Pennsylvania, which provides: "No bill, except general appropriations bills, shall be passed containing more than one subject which shall be clearly expressed in its title." Second: That the same is discriminatory and, therefore, in violation of the 14th Amendment of the Federal Constitution. In this case, we: are confronted by the Act of Assembly bearing the title "an act to regulate the practice of profession of Engi-neering and Land Surveying; creating a State Board for Regis-tration of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors; defining its powers and duties, imposing certain duties upon the Common-wealth and Political subdivisions thereof, in connection with public work and providing penalties." We meet in the title of this act, a recognition of the fact that it is the legislative intent to deal with two professions: First: Engineering. Second: Land Surveying.

NINETEEN states have on their statutes laws requiring engineers practicing within their borders to be licensed sixteen other states have such laws under consideration. While mining engineers are not specifically referred to in every case, they are referred to by implication. In only a few states have mining engineers taken any active interest in this subject, either in support or in opposition, yet it is a matter of very grave importance to them. By some it is thought that it is now too late to take any active steps toward preventing or repealing a type of legislation for which there appears to be a growing demand from some source. And it is further thought that the best course for those who are interested is to endeavor to guide legislation so that the remaining states may enact laws containing as few objectionable features as possible.

A Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) is being planned at the site of the former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota, under the sponsorship of the US National Science Foundation (NSF) in cooperation with the US Department of Energy (DOE). This national facility will host a variety of multidisciplinary science and engineering experiments including physics experiments that require shielding from cosmogenic radiation. Geotechnical mapping was performed in 2010 in large excavations of the Davis Campus at the 4850 Level of the former Homestake Mine. LIDAR mapping included laser scanning using a red light laser scanner and 288 Mpixels 360° still camera. The resulting vector map with the photographs digitally draped over the model, was used to create an accurate, virtual model of the excavations. For model verification, the laser scanning was accompanied by surveying and manual mapping of the geology and rock structure. The immediate use of the model was to perform structural analysis and interpretation of geology needed for the design of the DUSEL?s super large excavations. The second round of scanning, after the application of shotcrete to the excavations walls, will be used as a technical blueprint to assess the effectiveness of shotcrete application.

The Subtropolis mine is a room-and-pillar mine extracting the Vanport Limestone near Petersburg, Ohio. In February 2018, mine management began implementing a heading reorientation to better control the negative effects of excessive levels of horizontal stress. The conditions in the headings improved, but as expected, stressrelated damage concentrated within crosscuts. The mine operator has worked to lessen the impact of the instabilities in the outby crosscuts by implementing several engineering controls. With the implementation of each control, conditions were monitored and analyzed using observational and measurement techniques including three-dimensional (3-D) LiDAR surveys.

A Canadian company, Sight Power Inc., has developed a revolutionary, fully automated shaft monitoring and inspection system for deep-level mining based on a 3D mobile laser scanning technology. It consists of a special hardware unit and proprietary software with Artificial Intelligence elements for object recognition, features identification and change detection. The main purpose of this system is to significantly improve the safety of underground mining as well as to increase the available hoisting time thus generating substantial additional revenue for the mine.

In October 1999, Liebherr-America, Liebherr Construction and Liebherr Mining Equipment held anopen house at its Newport News, VA, plant. The open house was held to celebrate the company’s50th anniversary and to demonstrate the new TI 272mining truck. Attending the open house members of the media, vendors and company representatives from all over the world. In his introductory comments, company president Peter Eller announced Liebherr’s dedication to expanding its presence in North America. Liebherr now has 30 dealers across the United States. As part of the open house, a brief history of Liebherr was presented, beginning with its creation in1949. Liebherr engineering and sales representatives were available to answer questions.

Liebherr Mining Equipment Co., of Newport News, VA and Baxter Springs, KS, introduced the T282, a new two-axle, diesel-electric, AC drive haul truck with a payload capacity of 327-t (360-st). The T282 was unveiled at a press briefing in October 1998 at the company's Baxter Springs research and development1 manufacturing facility. In addition to an increase in pay- load capacity, the truck's AC drive system has been de- signed to allow for easy configuration to a trolley-assist system with minimal additional equipment. The T282 provides fuel savings, reduced maintenance requirements, and reduced downtime and maintenance costs, providing the mine operator with increases in productivity. Basic dimensions and weight of the T282 are: ? Overall length, 14.5 m (47.5 ft). ? Overall width, 8.7 m (28.7 ft). ? Loading height, 6.5 m (21.2 ft). ? Height - body up, 13.9 m (45.9 ft). ? For the first time in many years, the Liebherr Group chose to host its annual conference for the international construction trade press in the United States. The reason for the move is simple ? mining. Like other large corporations, especially those in the construction fields, Liebherr felt the effects of the global economic crisis that began in 2008. The slowdown in the housing market was especially hard on Liebherr?s mobile crane and earth moving divisions. The mining division, however, while affected by crashing commodity prices that led to cancelled orders and the loss of financing for some customers, was not battered as badly as the other divisions. And now, with the price of commodities once again on the rise, it seems that it will be Liebherr?s largest machines that lead the family-owned company to better days. ?We can report that our generally optimistic view during the crisis has proved adequate,? said Joachim Janka, president of Liebherr mining equipment, at the conference in Williamsburg, VA, just down the road from the company?s mining truck division global headquarters in Newport News, VA. ?Since the third quarter of 2009, our mining equipment activities have been recording once more a strong and steady demand. This has already yielded a substantial increase in market shares for our product lines of large mining shovels as well as for mining trucks.?

"Liebherr, as most anyone involved with the global mining industry knows, is one of the world’s largest makers of mining and construction heavy equipment. The familyowned company has been around since the 1940s and, according to Stefan Heissler, by the end of next year, will employ about 44,500 people worldwide. Heissler is a member of the board of directors of Liebherr International AG.It all started for the Switzerland-based company when Hans Liebherr first recognized a need for heavy equipment in the construction industry, Heissler said. His first product, introduced in 1949, was the TK10, a mobile crane that, at the time, was a groundbreaking innovation to the heavy construction industry. From there, the company began its growth into a world-leading heavy equipment manufacturer that always relied on innovation.In October, Liebherr gathered a group of mining and construction magazine editors in Leoben, Austria to take a look at the company’s latest addition to the global mining and construction markets. On the mining side, Liebherr provided a demonstration of its T-236 100-t (110-st) haul truck and the PR- 766 50-st (55-st) crawler tractor. The one-day demonstration took place at the Erzberg iron mine near Leoben, where both machines are being proven.The Erzberg Mine, operated by VA Ersberg, has been in operation for about 1,300 years and is said to be Europe’s largest surface mine. It employs about 230 people and mines about 12 Mt/a (13,200 million stpy) of ore, producing about 3 Mt/a (3.3 million stpy) of fine-grained iron ore.T-236 rigid-frame truckThe new T-236 rigid-frame dump truck, with a diesel electric drive system, is Liebherr’s entry into the 100-t (110-st) class and is the first in this class with a four-corner, oilimmersed braking system. The haul truck was first introduced during the 2016 MinExpo in Las Vegas, NV. The unit has since successfully completed its testing phase and is currently in its first field operation trials at the Erzberg iron mine in Austria."

In September, a fleet of 363-t (400-st) Liebherr trucks became operational in Brazil and have already begun moving iron ore in Para state. Prior to the arrival of the the trucks the Brazilian fleet relied on trucks up to 218 t (240 st). With the addition of the 363 t (400 st) trucks, the fleet has since experienced the high productivity offered by Liebherr T 282 B trucks.

"A full-scale demonstration unit of Tampella's LIFAC desulphurization process was tested at SaskPower's Poplar River Power Station Unit No. I. The test program included a series of parametric tests, followed by a 1500 hour operational evaluation. This paper summarizes the results of the test program, and SaskPower's economic evaluation which led to selection of the LlFAC process for SaskPower's 300 MW Shand power station. IntroductionOne of the major influences on the coal mining industry today is public and legislative response to acid rain. When sulphur-bearing fuels such as coal are burned, the sulphur oxidizes to sulphur dioxid e (S00 which, if uncontrolled, enters the atmosphere as one of the by-products of combustion. S02 then combines with water in the air to form an acid and acid rain results. Combustion also produces nitrogen oxides (N0J which can combine with water in the air forming nitrogen based acid , also contributing to acid rain.Acid rain has become a significant international concern. Newspapers have reported on dying forests, dead lakes and crumbling statues. Papers also include articles professing that the physical results of acid rain are vastly overstated. In the United States, a IO-year, Y2-billion dollar study called the National Acid Precipitation Assessment Program (NAPAP) was commissioned to evaluate the effects of acid rain. Even this extensive scientific study did not resolve the controversy. Despite disagreement over the quantitative effects of acid rain, there is no doubt that public concern over the issue is widespread and deeply felt.In response to this concern, legislators throughout the world have reacted with programs that restrict the emission s o f SO, and NO,. To industries involved in the supply and use of coal, the impact of these legislative programs has been extensive. United States power plants will be spending 10 billion dollars in the next decade for flue gas clean-up equipment. Even all this new equipment will not stem the tide of change to low sulphur coals and to “clean “natural gas. The following summarizes legislative actions taken for Canada and the United States."

It has been noted in recent years that the pillars in some bord-and-pillar workings scale or spall. In due course this process may result in the collapse of the affected panels. This paper presents a methodology for assessing the long-term behaviour of such workings, employing a simple model of pillar deterioration by scaling. It is assumed that scaling causes a gradual reduction in pillar width, hence the safety factor of pillars reduces in time. It is also postulated that the process of scaling will be arrested if the coal rubble around the pillar reaches a critical height. The probability that the pillars will survive for a certain period of time, or indefinitely, can be estimated. This can be accomplished by using the log-normal distribution proposed by Salamon and Munro4todescribe the distribution of the apparent safety factor values at failure. If an estimate of the rate of scaling is known, it is also possible to quantify, using a Monte Carlo technique, the expected life of the pillars. The method also facilitates pillar design by specifying a probability of survival for a given number of years or, alternatively, for an indefinite period. Using the limited pool of available data, analyses show that the proposed model does not appear to be inconsistent with observed behaviour of pillars in the Vaal Basin. The crucial parameter is the rate of scaling. Back calculations from eleven cases suggest that the rate of spalling in the Vaal Basin is about 0.2 m/year. It is noteworthy that two further cases in the same area give significantly higher rates (0.85 m/year). Some underground observations in the Witbank area indicate considerably lower rates in the order of 0.02?0.04 m/year. Further areas for study are recommended. These include a study of old workings to determine the extent and rate of scaling in the various coal fields, an investigation into the possible relationship between scaling and the chemical composition of the coal. In addition, model studies will be required to assess the practical impact of the research findings.

CONTRARY to what seems to be the general impression, the island of Cyprus was not named for the metal copper, but the reverse was the case. The origin of the name is entirely lost. The ancient city Kition, the birthplace of Zeno, is supposed to be the same as Kittim mentioned in Gen. x, 4; Jeremiah ii, 10 and Ezekiel xxvii, 6, and Josephus states that this name seems to have been applied to the city and also to the island itself. Cyprus is 50 miles off the coast of Asia Minor. The mountains on the mainland are plainly visible across the sea from where I write six miles from the shore of Morphou bay. It is 200 miles from Joppa the port of Jerusalem, and 250 from Port Said. The shape of the island is like a lizard, the tail pointing directly toward the old city of Antioch near the northeastern corner of the Mediterranean. The island was once heavily timbered. Among the great trees the cedars were said to even excel the famous cedars of Lebanon. The Odyssey refers to it as the "sweet smelling island" and makes other references. But the continual wars of every race and age completely stripped it of its timber, and for centuries it has been woefully barren. There are two ranges of mountains. One borders the north coast and runs out in a slim rocky ridge forming the "tail." The other occupies the southwestern part of the island, the highest point being Mt. Troodes 6600 ft. high, sometimes called Mt. Olympus. Whether or not it be the Mt. Olympus, anyway right around there the ancient gods and godesses frequently "started things." These peaks are in plain sight 10 miles south from where I live.

For many years the concept of life cycle costing (LCC) was promoted for decision making in corrosion protection systems. Nevertheless, the application of LCC was limited. Input data was often sourced from suppliers and met with scepticism. As a result final analysis was often insufficiently rigorous to meet the needs of Project Managers in sound decision making. The need for expediency often resulted in non-optimal corrosion protection system specifications. With improved communications and the global reach of industries, case history data, based upon actual performance has been able to provide input to substantiate decision making. However, today?s focus upon sustainability whereby environmental, economic and even social aspects enter into decision making has extended LCC into Life Cost Analysis (LCA). In an LCA analysis energy and environmental inputs into systems are compared as part of an overall assessment. The development of Agenda 21 at the Rio summit of 1992 has challenged the countries of the world to look at sustainable development in every economic activity. This ranges from construction to mining to electricity production to automotive production, use and disposal. The protection of buildings, infrastructure and transport systems is part of the needs of sustainable development. Zinc based corrosion protection has been an important part of the arsenal of the corrosion protection industry. This paper will highlight the use of LCC and the development of LCA with reference to the use of zinc based protection systems in a number of important industries.

The continuously increasing rate of the non-renewable raw material consumption together with the production of immense volumes of solid wastes and effluents is one of the main characteristics of our modern society. This leads to an unconditional necessity to reduce the raw material and energy consumption and to recycle the used materials and products. Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) constitutes a promising tool in this direction. LCA is a methodology, whose main purpose is the objective calculation and analysis of the environmental burdens of products, processes and activities as well as the estimation of the possibilities to perform environmental improvements in combination with the rational use of raw materials and energy. The purpose of this paper is to present the life cycle of marble and granite from the quarrying to the processing stage, including the transportation between the quarry and the processing plant, by quantifying the environmental impacts that derive from each stage and the evaluation of their potential effects to the environment and to human health.

In this work it was evaluated the environmental impact of sunflower plantation for biodiesel production. It was considered, for life cycle analysis (LCA) of sunflower in familiar agriculture in the South of Brazil, data collected in 23 experimental farmings with sowing in the period from August to November (2006 -2007). The LCA has considered the plantation conditions, energetic efficiency, man power, diesel volume, type of machines, fertilizers and pesticides used. From the analysis carried through it was evidenced that the sunflower produced in small scale does not need the use of tractors to have an excellent productivity and low impact. Therefore, the sunflower can be cultivated, with the necessary cares, in periods that do not compromise the man power for other cultures and the sunflower is an alternative so that the familiar property can produce biodiesel.
