It was customary formerly to publish an index of the Transactions about every fifth volume, but since the Institute began in 1913 to publish three volumes instead of one volume per year, this has been deemed impracticable and unnecessary. No collective index has been published since the one covering Volumes I to XXXV inclusive, excepting a short one covering Volumes XXXVI to XL inclusive. The Board of Directors, therefore, upon the recommendation of the Committee on Papers and Publications, decided to publish this index of Volumes XXXVI to LV inclusive, and thus enable members to have in condensed space the collective indexes of all the volumes of the Transactions.

The great additional clue given to professional books by adequate alphabetical and analytical indexes has been recognized from the beginning in the publication of the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining Engineers The bust ten volumes, edited by Dr Thomas M Drown, the secretary, were provided with indexes, as well as tables of contents Moreover, he included in Vol V (published in 1877), a consolidated index of Vols I to V , inclusive, and, at the triune of his resignation in 1884, he had prepared a similar index of Vols I to X , inclusive, which was published in the following year The indexes of the annual volumes from Vol XI on were made much more extensive than their predecessors Casual mentions, as well as important discussions, were included, the geographical localities of mines of works alluded to in the text were added in the index, and numerous cross-references were introduced, with the purpose of making it easy for the student to discover at once what the Transactions contained, either of thorough treatment or of hints and clues to further inquiry, concerning any topic, locality, or person within their scope In order to extend the advantages of this larger scheme to the earlier volumes a consolidated index of Vols I to XV , inclusive (published in 1888), was prepared by compiling the several annual indexes and introducing additional items for those preceding Vol XI Vol XX , issued in 1892, contained a similar consolidated index for Vols XVI to XX , inclusive, in 1897, a sepal ate index-volume, covering Vols XXI to XXV, inclusive, was published, and on 1902 appeared another for Vols XXVI to XXX These four indexes, for Vols I to XV, XVI to XX, XXI to XXV , and XXVI to XXX, respectively, bound together into a book of about 950 octavo pages have constituted for the last five year s a consolidated index to the Transactions which they cover-with the single difference that the book had to be consulted four times, where a single comprehensive index would require to be consulted but once This disadvantage, however, was relatively small, compared with the great convenience of finding by four trials m one book what would otherwise call for 30 separate searches in 30 books Moreover, the possession of the one might be most useful to a student who did not possess the 30, by indicating to him what they con-

An historical record of the history of iron-and steelmaking in the United States has long seemed a desirable project to many in The metallurgical Society of AIME. Over a period of five years, experts in their fields have been asked to put down on paper their knowledge. The series of historical articles has been published in JOURNAL OF METALS, beginning with A. B. Wilder's article in 1956, marking the first one hundred years of Bessemer Steelmaking. The Electric Furnace Committee honored the first half-century of the use of the electric arc furnace in America during their 1956 Conference, and S. B. Casey, Jr., wrote an appropriate article for JOURNAL OF METALS. The historical series was well underway. Articles soon followed on the history of the blast furnace, on the open hearth furnace, and on ferro-alloy manufacture. The final need was an authoritative article on coke ovens. The publication of the five-part article by C. S. Finney and John Mitchell this summer has concluded our series (but not the march of progress). We now present, between two covers, a comprehensive historical review, the work of 13 authors. We are hopeful that this book will receive a welcome among ironmakers and steelmakers. and that it will be a valuable reference for home or office library. We hope also that students will find the material helpful in their studies of this most important of American industries. Perhaps also, the historian of Americana will learn something new in searching through these pages. We are indebted to our authors who have spent much time on historical research, and to their companies who have supported their endeavors. We acknowledge the support of the National Open Hearth Steel Committee and of the Blast Furnace. Coke Oven, and Raw Materials Committee in jointly assuming the financial risks in publishing this book.

This YEAR BOOK, which is sent to every member, contains the roster of officers and the principal standing committees, brief summaries of the proceedings of the Annual Meeting and of the regional and divisional meetings, abstracts of papers published during-the-year, and a classified list of TECHNICAL PUBLICATIONS and CONTRIBUTIONS, as well as an index of all material published by the Institute in 1935 in these separate forms, in TRANSACTIONS and In MINING AND METALLURGY, the monthly magazine. The two volumes published for the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund are also represented by many items in the index. The necrology, which has appeared in the YEAR BOOK for two years past, will be pub¬lished in the. DIRECTORY, in the spring of 1936. Four volumes, 114 through 117, of the TRANSACTIONS are 1935 publications,-the subjects being, in the order named, Petroleum Development and Technology, Mining Geology, Iron and Steel, Founding and Metallography of Nonferrous Metals (Institute of Metals Division). The Mine Plant volume, which was authorized for publication by the Rocky Mountain Fund, and which was offered as an alternative to a TRANSACTIONS volume, was unavoidably delayed. It will, however, be published as a 1935 volume, and will be distributed as early as possible in 1936. The sixth volume in the A.I.M.E. Series, published under the auspices of the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund, is Coal through the Ages, by. Howard N. Eavenson; the seventh, Modern Uses of Nonferrous Metals,. which has twenty-two authors and was edited by Dr. C. H. Mathewson. Also, it was necessary in 1935 to have a second printing of the first Rocky Mountain Fund volumes, published in 1933-The Porphyry Coppers, and .Ore Deposits of the Western States (Lindgren Volume). The papers for the Iron and Steel and Institute of Metals Divisions have been issued as TECHNICAL PUBLICATIONS distributed under the binding Of METALS TECHNOLOGY in the months of January, February, April, June, August, September, October, December. This plan of distribution will be continued in 1936 for these two groups.

The aim of this Source Book has been to bring together in concise form information on the wealth of technical literature on mining and geology issued by the bewilderingly many state bureaus, federal bureaus, technical societies, trade associations and other noncommercial agencies in the United States. The effort has been made to include the navies of all the noncommercial publishers of such technical literature, to indicate where and at what price the articles may be obtained, as well as to give with as much detail as space permits specific information on individual papers. The thought has been to put the information particularly in the hands of the younger members of the profession, who may not yet have had the wide contacts with this literature that they will need in later life. Several factors have interfered with the complete attainment of the original intention. Undoubtedly some agencies that properly have a place in these pages have unintentionally been omitted; many agencies canvassed were omitted as not having literature of direct concern here; in other cases some. of the needed information was lacking; and the limitations of time and space have bounded the scope of the compilation.. Except in one or two cases, only publications prior to July, 1932, are included here, and from that standpoint the book is necessarily incomplete, as additions are continually being made to the files of literature on these subjects. Individual titles have been listed whenever possible but where an agency has collected a great mass of published material only most important titles, and a general review of the scope of the works, can be made. This results in penalizing, in a way, bureaus such as the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the U. S. Geological Survey, which have voluminous and vitally important works in the fields covered, because space commensurate with that volume and importance cannot be allowed. This is the third volume of the collective index of the Transactions Each volume is indexed and the indices of Volumes I to XXXV have been collected into a single index volume, similarly the indices of Volumes XXXVI to LV are collected in a single volume This index covers Vol¬umes LVI to LXXII, and the three index volumes together cover all the volumes of Transactions published from the organization of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in 1871 until the end of 1925.
