"A novel ß-diketone modified silica gel was synthesized by a simple reaction. The prepared material was characterized by diffuse reflectance FTIR spectroscopy and it was used for the adsorption of heave metal ions in the industrial waste water. The main parameters affecting the sorption of heavy metal ions, including pH, water flow rate, and elution, have been investigated in detail. Under the optimized operating conditions, most of the targeted heavy metal ions could be removed. The material could be simply regenerated by hydrochloric acid solution. The method is rapid, selective, economic and applicable to the removal of heavy metal ions from industrial waste water.IntroductionToxic organic pollutants and heavy metals ions mainly from industrial activities such as plating, metallurgy and dyeing industries, are a threat to human health and the surrounding environment, because of their toxicity and persistence after being released into the natural environment [1]. These pollutants must be removed or degraded to an acceptable level, before being discharged to the receiving waters. Therefore, detection and determination of heavy metal ions in industrial waste water is very important.Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) is the most used technique for the determination of heavy metal ions because of its capability for rapid multi-element detection over a wide concentration range and with relatively low detection limits. Compared to other techniques such as neutron activation analysis (NAA), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), ICP-OES has the above advantages. Some constituents in industrial waters, such as organic compounds and inorganic salts, may cause matrix effects. In order to achieve accurate and reliable results, an efficient preconcentration of heavy metal ions and their separation from the matrix are usually required."

Infrared materials are a special kind of material widely used in military, biological engineering and chemical industry. However, the problems associated with them such as unstable properties, high cost and a high thermal expansion coefficient seriously restrict the development and the wide application of the traditional infrared materials with the SiC or ZrSiO4 matrix. The ultrafine quartz powder is normally used to prepare the infrared materials by hot-pressing technology. The aim of the paper is to investigate the thermal expansivity, the effect of the SiO2 size and the addition of Al2O3 or Fe2O3 on the infrared emissivity of the quartz matrix of the infrared material (QMIM) in a 8-25um wavelength range. The results indicate that 89% of infrared emissivity and 0.4x 10-5/°C of thermal expansion coefficient of QMIM can be obtained. The affecting mechanism of A1203 and Fe2O3 on the infrared emissivity of QMIM were also discussed.

The application of on-line ash analyzers in coal processing has become widespread. However, the analyzers are employed largely in monitoring, blending or sorting applications. Just recently has work begun on using on-line ash, moisture and/or solids data for plant control; and even more recently for localized circuit or unit operation control. Process Technology, Inc. (PTI) has since 1990 placed several bulk coal and slurry analyzers in practice where Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) loops are used to manipulate controllable variables in real time. This technology is now being advanced by PTI. Unit operations where FLC has been employed in feedback loops using on-line ash analyzers include: heavy media vessels, cyclones, concentrating tables and froth flotation. The design, implementation and improvements attainable in preparation plant control using on-line ash analyzers are outlined in this paper.

A NEW preparation plant has been put in - operation to treat coal from the recently opened Concord mine, located about 15 miles west of Birmingham, Ala., by the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co., a U. S. Steel subsidiary. The mine produces metallurgical grade coking coal from the American seam for use as coke in the company's blast furnaces at the Fairfield and Enseley works. The capacity of the operation is 1000 tons of run-of-mine per hr, approximately half of which is delivered to the by-product coke plant at Fairfield after beneficiation to metallurgical grade. The remaining portion of the mine run is rock and refuse removed during preparation. No boiler coal or other fuels are produced by this mine. Preparation of the coal is done both under- ground and on the surface. The underground primary crushing station removes some tramp iron, and screens and crushes the oversize, most of which is rock, to protect the main slope conveyor. Lignite and subbituminous coals are utilized essentially as mined without beneficiation. Most of the present production is used to generate electric power and the major problem in this use is ash deposition on fireside surfaces. The preparation at existing mines involves principally crushing and screening operations. Blending of production from different locations within the mine is practiced in several mines to control ash composition. Drying and oil treatment for freezeproofing, of lignite are used to a limited extent during winter. Future processing may involve both washing and drying operations to alter ash composition by ion exchange and upgrade the low-rank fuels to higher heating values. Research has been initiated to determine the feasibility of such processing.

It is investigated systemically in this paper that the granularity of the precursor, ZnC2O4?2H2O, is influenced by synthetic conditions. Instantaneously adding of precipitation agent is able to control the mean size of precursor ZnC2O4?2H2O under 300nm, which has great function to obtain well-dispersed ZnO nanoparticles in the next step, pyrolysis. The pyrolysis kinetics model of ZnC2O4?2H2O powder is obtained. Two steps take place during the pyrolysis. The first is dehydration, which the pyrolysis kinetic model is 2(1-a)2/3(chemical reaction), A=8.3×108s-1, E=(75.82±3.00) KJ/mol. The second is formation of ZnO, which the pyrolysis kinetic model is (1-a) (random nucleation and latter growth), A=8.45×1028s-1, E=(360.54±12.00)KJ/mol. ZnO nanoparticles obtained by pyrolysis take on self-growth behavior. It is resulted that for precursor ZnC2O4?2H2O pyrolysis time takes obvious influence on the partilces size under 420?, 500? and 600?. Finally, a new flow sheet for synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles is investigated, in which blendes is used as raw material and hydrometallurgy is introduced into it. The whole flow sheet has no industrial wastes, that is all byproducts can be used in the flow sheet recycled, resulted in the de-crease of productive cost and industrial wastes.

This study investigates the transformation of pyrolytic spent tyre-derived char and crumb rubber into high-performance activated carbon chars for industrial wastewater remediation. Utilising an in-house macro-thermogravimetric analysis system under an argon atmosphere, spent tyre-derived activated carbon char were synthesised via physical temperature activation and aqua regia demineralisation. Comprehensive characterisation using x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, revealed a predominantly amorphous structure with nanoscale crystallites (~1 nm) and active surface functional groups. Proximate analysis confirmed that both crumb rubber and leached tyre crumb rubber with aqua regia derivatives achieved favourable compositions (ash ≈ 9.6%; fixed carbon ≈ 84%), comparable to commercial activated carbon (AC). At an optimal activation temperature of 850°C, the char of tyre crumb leached with aqua regia variant exhibited a significant surface area of 300 m²/g. Crucially, the tyre crumb char produced at 850°C variant developed a pore volume of 0.8 cm³/g—effectively doubling that of commercial activated carbon (0.4 cm³/g)—facilitating the sequestration of large organic molecules. In application tests using high-strength starch wastewater, char of tyre crumb leached with aqua regia and tyre crumb char, both produced at 850°C, achieved total organic carbon removal efficiencies of 60% and 50%, respectively, bridging the performance gap between waste-derived and commercial adsorbents. These findings validate waste tyres as a viable, low-cost precursor for industrial-grade adsorbents, offering a sustainable circular economy route for tyre valorisation and reduced industrial disposal costs. Future research will focus on kinetic modelling and the recovery of zinc from spent tyre-derived activated carbon char residues.

Arsenic constitutes a major contaminant for the hydrometallurgical industry. Its removal and immobilization from process effluents typically involves lime neutralization and co-precipitation with ferric iron (Fe (III)/As(V)>3). Alternatively, precipitation of scorodite (FeAsO4?2H2O (cr)) may be applied to arsenic fixation. The mechanism of arsenic fixation in the former process has been suggested to be surface adsorption. Unequivocal characterization of these products is difficult because of their amorphous nature hence a variety of methods need to be applied including the particularly powerful method, extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. In this study, we have investigated the preparation of arsenate-adsorbed ferrihydrite with the purpose to compare its structure to that of Fe(III)-As(V) co-precipitates and scorodite (both amorphous and crystalline). Furthermore the solubilities of these Fe(III)-As(V) solids are measured as a function of pH. Their structures are elucidated and correlated to their solubilities and thereby the application of these findings to the practice of arsenic removal and disposal is assessed.

PET/kaolin nanocomposites were prepared with melt blending and the structure of the composites was characterized through IR techniques. The results showed that there is stable chemical bonding between PET and kaolin. In addition, the dispersion condition of nanokaolin was observed by means of SEM and TEM. As a result, the thickness of the dispersed nanokaolin particles in PET matrix is mainly from 20mm to 200nm, and the nanosized particles congregate to some extent in the samples. In addition, it was found the kaolin particles almost homogeneously dispersed in the PET matrix, without preferential orientation because of the shear effect due to melt blending. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of PET/kaolin nanocomposites are dependent on the modification efficiency of nanokaolin. With the poor efficiency, the nanokaolin particles tend to aggregate at a high content and have a bad interfacial compability between nanokaolin and PET matrix, which lead to stress concentration, so the mechanical property descends. Experiments of different contents of modified nanokalin indicated that the intensity of PET/kaolin nanocomposites decreased firstly, then increased, and then decreased, with the nanokaolin content of 4 to 5 percent, the rupture stress of the composites showed a maximum value, which was higher than that of pure PET. On one hand, nanokaolin decreases the function among PET macromolecules, which will decline the mechanical properties, on the other hand, the piece structure of kaolinite improves the intensity of the nanocomposite. When the nanokaolin content is low, the former has the dominant effect on mechanical property, while the latter will play a leading role with the content increasing. But if the nanokaolin content still increases, the agglomeration and stress concentration will be obvious.

This paper consists of two main parts. The first, under the heading Preparations, deals with suggested preparations to be carried out in advance so that loss of life might be prevented should a fire occur. The second part, under the heading Fire Procedure, deals with actual organized procedure to be followed for the preservation of life if and when a fire occurs. The writer realizes that these preparations and procedures may be to some extent applicable to only a few mines with a relatively simple vein system and that each mine would need to formulate a procedure to conform to its own particular conditions, scope, and degree of complexity. Preparations 1. - Ventilation Control The objective in ventilation control in the event of a tire underground is to keep the travelways, through which men must pass to reach surface, supplied with air not deficient in oxygen and free from gases and smoke. Without some control of the volume and direction of the main air currents flowing through the mine, the success of removing men to surface might be seriously hampered. ? This control is achieved by means of mechanical ventilation forcing air through desired airways and workings with the assistance of doors to regulate the volume and direction of the air flow. In connection with fans and doors, the possibility of short-circuiting should always be taken into consideration, as it can often nullify the value of a fan and possibly trap men in dangerous atmosphere if the short-circuiting involves the fire area. Main fans are often installed so that they can be reversed in a short time. However, fans should not be reversed unless this is found absolutely essential by those in authority. Misjudgment in this respect could cause the loss of life to men who might naturally take refuge in what they believe by experience to be a fresh air stream. Another precaution to be taken is to see that doors in airways are fastened in a fixed position so that they cannot be sucked or blown open when the fan is reversed, otherwise short-circuiting could possibly render the fan useless.

This paper and slide presentation is a brief rundown on what is probably the worst natural devastation I have ever witnessed. The epicenter of the quake that so violently shook Mexico City occurred 230 miles away near Mexico's west coast. The first calculation placed the quake at 7.8 on the Richter scale. This was later upgraded to 8.1. Each unit increase on the Richter scale indicates about a 30 fold increase in energy released. The quake was felt in much of Mexico and south Texas and damage occurred in many other Mexican cities. On the morning of September 19, 1985, at 7:18 A.M., the ground went into motion and shook for approximately 2 to 4 minutes. During this period most of the devastation occurred. At 7:38 P.M. the following day, the second quake hit and more buildings fell from this 7.5 quake. The ground in Mexico City moves like jello since it is a dry lake bed 7,350 feet above sea level.\

Federal mine safety regulations prohibit the recirculation of face air In a gassy Class III metal-non metal mine. Tg Soda Ash, Inc, operates a 2.0M ton/yr (2.2 million st/yr) underground gassy Class III trona mine In southwest Wyoming, currently liberating approximately 5,700 m3/day (200,000 ft3/day) of methane. Because of the low methane emissions and the incombustibllity of trona, it was decided that Tg would be an excellent environment to test recirculation at a U. S. gassy mine, for possible future use by Industry. A research program was begun with the cooperation of MSHA, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Utah, and Tg. Initial testing centered around re-using shop air under¬ground. Next, conduct a continuous miner section recirculation test to see how the face contamination was affected by 305m (1,000 ft) and 610m (2,000 ft) recirculation distances. A district test followed to examine the effects of the critical parameter - respirable dust. Finally, a long-term program to study respirable trona dust transportation and deposition in mine airways to plan for district fan siting and effects on face air dust levels.

No estado do RN o êxodo da população residente na zona rural para a zona urbana ocorre de forma ainda acentuada, tendo como agravante o ciclo de secas periódicas. Outro problema do estado é a desertificação, que vem tomando proporções maiores ao longo dos anos, e em algumas regiões específicas, gera relevante preocupação ambiental, uma vez que as cerâmicas ali presentes utilizam a vegetação local como combustível nos fornos de tecnologia tradicional. Embora se tenha consciência deste problema, pouco se percebe em termos de iniciativa para saná-lo, uma vez que o setor é marcado pela baixa tecnologia empregada. Uma alternativa para a construção de residências para a população de baixo poder aquisitivo é a utilização de tijolos feitos de solo-cimento. O solo-cimento é uma mistura íntima e bem proporcionada de solo com cimento Portland, de tal modo que haja uma estabilização daquele por este, melhorando as propriedades da mistura. O tijolo feito de solo-cimento é caracterizado por um menor custo final que o tradicional e pela baixa agressão ao meio ambiente, uma vez que não é queimado. Neste trabalho foram produzidos tijolos de terra crua misturada com cimento (20% a 30%) e compactados em prensa manual. Foram realizados análises dos materiais empregados e de resistência à compressão dos tijolos produzidos. Verificou-se que o tijolo de solo-cimento possui resistência a compressão dentro das normas e facilidade de fabricação, proporcionado assim uma solução alternativa para o setor.

As amostras foram caracterizadas por difração de raios-X para avaliação da estrutura cristalina obtida. A fotodegradação do glicerol (utilizado como agente de sacrifício) foi avaliada pela técnica de cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência.

The novel technology of calcination to prepare triuranium octaoxide（U3O8）from ammonium uranyl carbonate in microwave fields was investigated on the basis of the temperature rising characteristics of ammonium uranyl carbonate, triuranium octaoxide (U3O8), and their mixture. The result of experiments show that ammonium uranyl carbonate had weak capability to absorb microwave energy, while triuranium octaoxide has the very strong capability to absorb microwave energy and the sample temperature increased rapidly with an increase mixture ratio of triuranium octaoxide. The optimal calcination conditions were as follows: microwave power 700 W, calcination time 10 min and 60 g in this experiments range, respectively. Under these conditions the value of total uranium and 4 U of triuranium octaoxide was 84.28% and 31.02%, respectively. It is feasible to prepare triuranium octaoxide by calcination from ammonium uranyl carbonate, which mixed with small amounts of triuranium octaoxide under microwave fields.

In this very interesting paper, Mr. Harrington mentions a considerable variety of materials suitable for use in the rock dusting of coal mines; this suggests that you may possibly be interested in same purely theoretical figures tending to show the superiority of gypsum for this purpose. Some of the gentlemen present have found difficulty in applying a thick, adherent coating of dry gypsum to the ribs and roofs of their workings, for which reason pulverized gypsum will perhaps be chiefly useful for the loading of barrier troughs. In view of the function that rock dust is expected to perform in case of a coal-dust explosion, it seems obvious that the most efficacious dust will be the one that can absorb the most heat and absorb it most rapidly. The customary rock dusting materials differ considerably in this respect, depending principally upon the facility with which they can be decomposed at the temperatures encountered in a coal-dust explosion. Such stable materials as silica, anhydrite and flue-dust vary but slightly in their heat-absorbing capacities, the specific heats of minerals in general ranging between 0.19 and 0.22; on the other hand, gypsum and limestone, as well as certain argillaceous materials such as shale, adobe, etc., are capable of absorbing additional heat through their chemical dissociation, although, as will appear later, it is questionable whether the amount of heat thus absorbed, in the case of limestone, shale, and adobe, is large enough to have any practical value. As to the temperature developed by a coal-dust explosion, the Bureau of Mines reports one test in which gold foil was melted, and others in which silver foil was melted, but not gold; hence 1832° F. (1000° C.) seems a reasonable figure to assume for purposes of calculation. Normal temperature is taken as 68° F. (20°C.). Latent heat of vaporization of water. from and at 100°C.. 535.9 Kg.-cal. per kilogram (964.6 B.t.u. per pound).] Computations will be based on the Fahrenheit scale and British thermal units, as probably more familiar in the coal industry. First as to the inert materials: their heat-absorbing capacity per pound is simply the product of their specific heat, say 0.22, multiplied by the assumed rise in temperature, 1764° F., or 388 B.t.u. per pound. Gypsum, CaS0, 2H.0, though apparently perfectly dry, contains 21% of combined water. When gradually heated it will have liberated three-quarters of its water freely by the time it reaches 250° F.; the remaining one-quarter is retained to a somewhat higher temperature, but the last of it will have been expelled at 482° F. EVERY man connected with the mining industry should take a significant pride in the fact that he belongs to an industry and to a profession that, from the beginning, has been constructive. The miner digs his ore and he gives the metal to art, to industry, and to commerce. The nature of our business is destructive only in that we deal with a wasting asset. That should be a source of great pride to those who belong to the profession. But unfortunately, the product of our mines, our smelters, and our re- fineries does not always go to constructive purposes. There are times when, in the administration of the affairs of men, our product chiefly goes to purposes which are destructive. When we look upon the panorama of horror that is being enacted throughout the world today, we wonder whether any effort toward the development of civilization and culture and education and well-being has been worthwhile. We are appalled to see the things that have been developed, through the application of science, toward progress and efficiency, now used for the catastrophic destruction of those things which are the most valuable that man has built. We must find hope that this is but an episodic thing; that it must, in the infinite wisdom of the Almighty, usher in a period of peace and progress, of civilization and development that will make man's existence upon earth worthwhile.

Autonomous mining systems have been deployed for improving mine performance. However, there is a fear of job losses. Adoption of autonomous systems is envisaged to be resisted by major stakeholders in Ghana due to high illiteracy and unemployment. This paper assesses the preparedness of Ghanaian mining stakeholders for the adoption of autonomous systems to Ghana’s surface mining industry. Closed and open-ended questionnaires were administered to mine stakeholders. Respondents generally expressed unwillingness to accept autonomous systems into Ghanaian mines due to fear of increased unemployment. We propose setting up a mining education fund (MEF) for training stakeholders in autonomous mining systems. INTRODUCTION Mining contributes enormously to the sustenance and growth of global and national economies through the provision of raw materials, employment, revenues and foreign exchange (Carvalho, 2017; ICMM, 2017; Cordes et al., 2016; Solomon et al., 2008; Walser, 2000). The International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM, 2014) reported that globally, formal mining employs approximately 2.5 million people. Many resource-rich countries, especially the developing ones, have experienced strong socioeconomic growth propelled by the discovery and extraction of valuable minerals. McMahon and Moreira (2014) reported a positive linkage between mining and sustainable development. They revealed that averagely, resource-rich countries have improved Human Development Index (HDI) scores than countries without mineral resources. Mining remains a crucial industry in Ghana’s economic development (Bermúdez-Lugo, 2016; Amponsah-Tawiah and Dartey-Baah, 2011). Over the years, mining has contributed significantly to the gross domestic product (GDP) of Ghana. In 2013, mining accounted for 1.7% of Ghana’s GDP and about 19% of government revenues (Ghana Chamber of Mines, 2015). The Ghana Chamber of Mines also reported that mining contributed over 50% of foreign direct investment, 37% of export earnings and 1.1% of direct employment revenues. The US Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that 65% of coal, 92% of metals and 96% of industrial minerals are mined using surface mining methods (DOE, 2007). Generally, mining is a capital-intensive venture, with high operating cost, hence there is a constant demand for mining companies to seek efficient cost reduction and production maximization strategies. One strategy being pursued keenly is automation, which is noted to improve productivity, and worker safety at minimal cost. According to Parreira (2013), mining automation involves direct teleoperation whereby workers remotely control the mining process using computers from a control room.

Developers of advanced mining projects face the challenge of how to craft a “Request for Proposal for a Feasibility Study” that will result in bids that are comparable and will lead to a successful execution of the study. Mining engineering consulting firms are challenged by “Request for Proposals” that may consist of a limited description of the Scope of Services and other items, which could present difficulties in the subsequent financing and/or development of the project. Changes in international disclosure requirements have also changed the landscape on how resources and reserves are reported by introducing new disclosure requirements and concepts such as qualified persons. This paper lays out a strategy for preparing a Feasibility Study “Request for Proposal” based on the experiences of a mining engineering consulting firm working on a diversity of projects around the world, and in light of the recent changes in international reporting standards for reserves.
