Development of the Canadian North, a subject of growing national interest, must in part await the development of better forms of trans-port. The estimated 500,000 square miles of muskeg terrain in the north combined with the" scarcity of roads make essential the early development of special purpose muskeg vehicles. Good progress has been made in the last eleven years in classifying muskeg and some progress has been made in determining its mechanical properties. Limited travel is now possible through the use of special purpose tracked vehicles which have been built without adequate design data. A program to provide data which can be used to optimize muskeg vehicle designs began in 1957. The results of the second phase of this pro-gram are presented in this report. It is shown that vehicle performance in muskeg is directly related to the mechanical properties of the muskeg. Further, it is shown that good de-sign practice for tracked vehicles expected to operate in snow, sand, soft clays and loams is also good practice for muskeg vehicles. All indications are that muskeg mechanics is properly a part of conventional soil mechanics.

This report discusses U.S. Bureau of Mines' research involving modem vehicle position determination techniques in surface mining. The applications would include haul trucks, power shovels, and drilling rigs. Accurate position determination of these vehicles in near real-time is expected to result in safer and more efficient mining operations. The requirements for a vehicle position monitoring and warning system were determined. After screening several concepts, the global positioning system (GPS) and a radar positioning system were selected for further evaluation. A state-of-the-art GPS receiver was taken to a surface mine to assess the feasibility of receiving the satellite signals. A state-of-the-art radar positioning system was evaluated with regard to accuracy.

Reduce the potential of haulage related injuries in underground mines by providing a method for quickly assessing the state of repair of mine haulage track. The Problem Currently, there are no established standards or procedures for inspection or cleaning of underground mine haulage track. Many track defects are hidden from an inspector because of layers of dirt and debris on the ballast, spikes, fishplates, etc. When a visual inspection can be performed, it may be highly subjective, except for a few items that can be categorized or counted, such as missing bolts or spikes. Track inspectors may even become tolerant of defects that can gradually worsen. For these reasons, mechanical inspection methods are needed to supplement visual inspections. Approach The Bureau investigated this problem and designed a towed vehicle to both mechanically clean and inspect underground coal mine haulage track. The vehicle was developed using a systems approach, paying particular attention to human factors issues such as operator field of view, operator ingress-egress, control positioning, and seating design. The prototype was built using simple fabrication techniques and off-the-shelf components.

INTRODUCTION Today at LKAB, the primary mining method used is sublevel caving, independent of ore-body size, shape, dip, and geographical location. The mining of small ore bodies with relatively flat dip involves a lot of develop¬ment work, a large initial investment, big dilution, and large ore losses. In 1975 serious investigations into other possible methods, especially for those small ore bodies which do not lie in direct contact with other ore bodies, began. Different methods were studied and a number of in¬teresting ideas came from Russian mines. An analysis was made of one of the proposed methods, sublevel benching, in which mining is carried out from raises, and which uses the throw from the blast to place the broken ore. However, there were reservations about working in big open rooms at great depth, and doubts about the possibility of getting acceptable drilling results in an acceptable environment from raised platforms. Testing was therefore delayed for a time. However the investigations continued and in the fall of 1976, it was decided to try vein mining in a small ore body (Indian) (see Figs. 1 and 2). MINING RESULTS The results are now available from the mining of Indian and are as follows: Ore plan area 1200 m2 Level height 50 m Ore volume 60 000 m3 Ore tonnage 270 000 t Iron content 62% Dip 0.69 rad (40°) Ore thickness 14 m Ore compressive strength 26 MPa Ore C-factor (fracture density) 0.21 Hanging wall compressive strength 28 MPa Hanging wall C-factor 0.27 About 40 000 m of the holes were drilled by ring drills with an average productivity of 85 m/shift; loading of a round (2 rows, 750 m of hole) was usually accomplished in one shift. The total ore recovery was about 270 000 t with an average iron content of 59%, and three to four shifts were required per round (4700 t) to load. The principal of "throwing" the rock during blast¬ing worked well, and no ore remains on the footwall. ROCK CONTROL Before mining commenced at Indian, it was dis¬covered that the rock strength in its vicinity was rela¬tively poor. Since the ore is flatly dipping, and mining was to take place with open rooms, the strength of the hanging wall was of great importance. A supplementary program of exploration drilling was done during the fall of 1976 in order to assess fracture spacing and rock strength from the drill cores. Results showed that the strength of the hanging wall was low because of the many fractures. A decision was made to try cable bolting of the hanging wall by extending some of the ordinary blast¬holes. Cables (20 mm diam) were grouted in these larger holes and the rest of the hole was then utilized for ordinary loading (see Fig. 2). About 100 bolts altogether were installed and, to date, only small falls have occurred and the hanging wall is holding. Its exposed area is 2100 m2 DEVELOPMENT WORK On the 350-m level, four crosscuts (two per mining room), one longitudinal drift, and two elongated drifts (one per raise) for the raise climber were developed as shown in Fig. 1. Of the 230 m of drift, 60 m were in ore and the rest in waste. For mining room A alone, a total of 115 m of drift were needed with 30 m in ore. The drift dimensions were about 4.5 X 5.5 m. In the drifting on the 300-m level, two connecting drifts were driven from one existing transport drift forward to the respective raises. The total development was 93 m, all in waste (Fig. 1). The two raises having a length of 80 m each were driven at an angle of 0.68 rad (39°) from the hori¬zontal. They were driven along the footwall contact with a separation of 30 m and had an area of 10 m2. LONG-HOLE DRILLING The drilling of long holes with the ring drilling unit began in the fall of 1977 in raise A. The equipment consisted of an Alimak raise climber, equipped with a lower platform from which the charging was done.

Epithermal vein systems are often modeled as simple, discrete high grade structures within low grade host rock. However, geologic setting and structural preparation influence how such vein systems form. In structurally complex areas, veins may follow several structural trends and occur on a variety of scales. Geologic and grade modeling within such complex structural regimes can be difficult as individual veins cannot be delineated from host rock based on grade alone. Structurally complex areas require a different approach than traditional discrete vein modeling. Presented herein is a study of a structurally complex area that hosts vein mineralization to be mined underground. All veins could not be modeled discretely, so an alternate approach was needed. Major structures were modeled using surface and underground mapping and were then used to create a structural trend for the area. This trend was used to guide 3D grade shell construction. The grade shells replaced 3D vein solids for grade estimation in order to mitigate the influence of high grade samples. Structurally guided grade shell construction offers a more effective modeling method than discrete vein modeling in deposits that are structurally complex.

The Martha epithermal Au-Ag deposit contains multiple generations of quartz veins with a range of textures. We examined: +        vein textures, +        crosscutting vein relationships, and +        the paragenetic sequence within the pit walls as well as a wide range of hand specimens. Samples include host rock, breccia, and veins, but these groups are not distinct; instead, they form a continuum.   Veins at Martha mine show a wide range of textures on a local scale; these textures also change significantly over both the lateral and vertical extent of the pit. Common textures include crustiform bands, comb quartz, colloform bands, platy quartz, massive quartz, drusy quartz, sedimentary textures and brecciation.   Vein grades relate to textures. Many textures, including crustiform, platy, cherty, and sedimentary textures display predominantly low grades, but some textures are linked with high grades, such as ginguro, massive and comb quartz where they are associated with visible base metal sulphides and/or electrum. Host rocks and most breccias are low grade, as most samples contain <2 ppm Au.

GENERAL GEOLOGIC DESCRIPTION The Escalante silver deposit located in southwestern Utah is an epithermal vein system consisting of a hanging wall and footwall vein, straight along strike and dipping about 1.2 rad (70°). The veins consist of banded quartz and calcite fissure fillings between volcanic wall rock that are silicified for some distance outward from the vein. The walls of the veins are sharp and the silver values are irratically distributed through the various bands within the vein. Only very low grade values are to be found in the wall rock on either side. The portion of the veins above the water table have been somewhat leached, with some secondary enrichment below. The mineralogical zonation is variable due to a fluctuating water table through geologic time. SAMPLE MANAGEMENT AND COMPOSITE ASSAYS Sample data for the deposit was obtained from over 50 diamond drill holes, from channel samples cut at intervals across a drift, and from scattered surface trenches along the out- crop of the hanging wall vein. Fig. 13-1 is a surface plan map showing the vein outcrop and some diamond drill locations. Two cross sections through the vein are shown in Figs. 1 3-2 and 13-3. Nearly all of the diamond drill core of vein material was assayed in 0.3-m (I-ft) lengths, from which weighted composite assays were manually calculated for the horizontal thickness of the vein. Structural assemblages of veins, shear zones, and wallrock alteration zones arising from fault-valve action on steep reverse fault systems are reviewed using observations from mesothermal gold-quartz lodes in the Archean Yellowknife, Abitibi, and Yilgarn greenstone belts of Canada and Western Australia, the Cretaceous Mother Lode system in the Foothills Metamorphic Belt of the western Sierra Nevada, California and the Victorian goldfield hosted in a folded quartz-turbidite succession of Paleozoic age in Australia. Despite differences in the host rock assemblages, the deposits have many structural characteristics in common. These form a useful exploration guide when re-evaluating comparable, but poorly described gold-quartz vein systems such as those in the Reefton area of New Zealand.

Five major veining events have been identified within the area surrounding the Mount Whaleback microplaty hematite deposit. These veining events can be directly correlated to the established deformation history of the Hamersley Province (Brown et al, in press). Vein formation temperatures of 203 to 231¦C have been obtained from primary fluid inclusions within veins which formed around the postulated time of ore formation. Preliminary proton induced x-ray emition (PIXE) analysis of these inclusions indicates KCl is the dominant salt species with varying levels of Ca, Fe, Ti, Mn present. It is suggested that some of these veins may have formed from feeder or effluent fluids from microplaty hematite ore formation.

The Rum Jungle Uranium Province is lo cated on the western margin of the Pine Creek Geosyncline approximately 60km south of Darwin. Uranium was discovered in the Embayment area (Whites Deposit) in 1949, spurring active ex- ploration and leading to the discovery of the Rum Jungle Creek South Deposit in 1959. With the discovery of the Alligator Rivers Uranium Field, new criteria in the understanding of the controls for mineralization sparked a re- surgence of exploration activities in the Rum Jungle area. Uranerz Australia Pty. Ltd. (UAL) commenced exploration in the area in the late 1970's in joint venture and in its own right. Two domal Archaean granitic complexes, the Rum Jungle and Waterhouse Complexes, domi- nate the area. They are unconformably mantled by Lower Proterozoic sediments metamorphosed to middle to upper greenschist grade. The Lower Proterozoic sediments are unconformably over- lain by remnant blocks of Carpentarian sand- stone, generally preserved in downfaulted blocks. Over a six year period extensive geolo- gical, geochemical and geophysical programs were conducted to reinvestigate previous target areas and locate new prospective zones. Exten- sive shallow bedrock drilling showed that lo- cally the stratigraphic succession is quite variable and cannot always be divided into an ordered succession for correlation with groups and formations established by the Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR). Deformational events resulting in intraformational recumbent folding and overthrusting also account for repetition of certain lithotypes.

Industrial processes involving multi-phase flows such as flotation require understanding of the relationships between bubbles, solid particles and the flow. Modern experimental tools are employed in this effort to measure with great accuracy the basic features of the motion of all three phases in turbulent flow. We employed a unique digital particle image velocimeter (DPIV) that can record with great accuracy and kHz temporal resolution, velocity vectors of all three phases, namely the fluid, the solid particles and the air bubbles. The interaction of these three phases was studied in homogeneous isotropic turbulence generated by cylindrical grids. Particles and bubbles were released into the turbulence and the motions of the three phases were monitored. The experimental results obtained in the present work were compared with the predictions of the models published in the literature.

Another key variable is the maximum velocity at which a piece of mobile mining equipment can operate in this limited space. Typical velocity- clearance curves for different mine transportation systems are developed and characterized. Applications of the relationships are examined, emphasizing their significance in the design and control of mine materials handling systems.

When dealing with high velocity projectiles, the ability for researchers to accurately and precisely measure the velocity of the projectile is of great value. This report will analyze three different methods of recording high velocity projectiles for: their ability to record velocity data, pros and cons for each method, and any possible bias or limitations that would result. Method 1 uses a Phantom V10 high-speed video camera and a velocity reference screen to record the projectile’s path and proprietary Phantom software to analyze the data and determine velocity. Method 2 utilizes two break screens. This method, consisting of strung copper wire as the break material, is one that has been used in the past by Missouri University of Science and Technology (MS&T) researchers in assisting in finding velocities of high-speed projectiles. Method 3 is a pair of make screens, similar to Method 2 in that two screens were used for each test but relies on a projectile making a circuit between two sheets of metal separated by an insulation layer, to find a velocity. All three methods will be used simultaneously in each shot to rule out any projectile differences in subsequent shots. Projectiles of three different relative velocities, low, medium, and high, will be fired and analyzed to determine strengths and weaknesses of each method.

The VoD of non-ideal explosives depends on the charge diameter and the thickness, strength and sound velocity of the confiner. VoD measurements are made to evaluate explosives for development, quality control and prediction of field performance. In testing, the container is part of the explosive system and affects the measured VoD. Pipe testing in cardboard tubes delivers the best guide to unconfined critical diameter and minimum VoD range, but the thickness of the pipes affects the result close to critical diameter, even in emulsions. PVC pipes are not good for unconfined test work because they provide relatively strong confinement. Care must be taken to select pipes with constant relative pipe area across the range of diameters. Where pipes are used to evaluate the effect of confinement, the ratio of the wall thickness relative to the thickness of the detonation driving zone in the explosive needs to exceed 0.5 to create full confinement and the ratio of the detonation velocity to the confiner wave speed must be considered. Estimates for critical thicknesses are provided from Non-Ideal detonation models. The relationship between confinement modulus and VoD is discussed and indexes are suggested for quantifying the explosive performance.

I. INTRODUCTION The object of this paper is to enlarge the field of settling velocities treated by me in my former papers, Close Sizing Before Jigging, and Sorting Before Sizing.' There seemed need of work both on coarser and on finer sizes. Messrs. A. Sidney Warren and M. L. Nagel undertook the investigation for the coarser sizes, from 12.85 mm. down to 2.05 mm. diameter. Their work, because of the closer spacing and because of the increased number of observations and consequent stronger averages, called for a revision of the former work. Messrs. G., A. Barnaby and Ralph Hayden undertook this part of the work, from 2.49 mm. down to 0.28 mm., which is near the limit of sifting. Their work covers the ground much more minutely and comprehensively than the former papers. There remained to be covered the portion of the field too fine for investigation with the sieves. This part, covering the range of grains from 0.48 to 0.03 mm., was undertaken by Mr. E. S. Bardwell. For it he used the elutriation method. II. THE FIRST, OR COARSEST, SECTION OF THE FIELD. The first desideratum in this investigation was a series of sieves for sizing the sands preparatory to making the tests. It became necessary, therefore, to decide on a sieve-scale for this purpose. A sieve-scale is a series of sieves in which the dimensions of the holes of the successive members form a series increasing by a. definite ratio. Most theories of blasting phenomena are based on the condition that explosive charges have a spherical shape. If a cylindrical charge is considered, the explosive is usually assumed to have an infinite velocity of detonation. Another limitation is also often imposed whereby only one free face is considered to exist. Unfortunately, these conditions all serve to limit the number of variables involved and tend to over-simplify analyses. The result is that explanations for actual effects from blasts are seldom realistic. In addition, no solution has yet been found to explain the actions of certain blasting agents that appear to stress materials in a different manner than do many of the high explosives. In order to determine causes for some of the unexplained phenomena, investigations were conducted by the writers on both actual field blasts and theoretical problems. Although many solutions have been proposed to explain the rock breakage processes, none relate the effects of hole depth, explosive and rock energy- propagation velocities with charge placement geometry. Evidence indicates there is a definite interdependence of those factors and that they are of vital importance in proper drill-pattern design. For simplicity most of the discussion in this paper applies to vertical blast-holes drilled in uniform massive rock for open pit blasting, although the basic principles presented apply to all forms of blasting with certain basic modifications being necessary for specific field conditions.

The Velvet gold orebody (153 Koz Au) is located near the Kanowna Belle gold deposit in the Boorara Domain of the Kalgoorlie Terrane, a subdivision of the Archaean Eastern Goldfields Superterrane (Swager et al, 1990). Gold mineralisation at Velvet is hosted within an intrusion of intermediate composition that broadly follows a sub vertical hanging wall splay of the Fitzroy Shear Zone.Velvet was discovered in 2003 during an underground exploration drilling program targeting potential strike extensions to the Kanowna Belle deposit. Diamond drill hole KDU1595 returned a downhole intercept of 36 m grading 4.6 ppm Au approximately 500 m west of the deposit and at a vertical depth of 700 m below surface in the immediate hanging wall of the primary Kanowna Belle host structure, the Fitzroy Shear Zone. Subsequent drilling completed following the initial discovery, from both surface and underground collar positions, failed to replicate this result.In 2014, KDU1595 was resurveyed gyroscopically and the mineralised intercept correctly located. Additional drilling was undertaken to follow-up the repositioned discovery hole. Challenges included poor drilling angles through the Fitzroy Shear Zone, excessive deviation during drilling and the unknown geometry of the target. Navigational drilling helped to successfully penetrate the Fitzroy Shear Zone and in April 2015, drill hole KDU3234 returned a significant downhole intercept of 45 m grading 5.6 ppm Au.Additional drilling success resulted in a decision to develop a 600 m drive to serve as a dual-purpose access for further exploration and mining. This was a potential risk considering that the orebody geometry was unknown and all significant drilling results were clustered within a 50 m × 50 m panel. Development commenced in June 2015 and the first ore cut taken in April 2016. Geological mapping and structural interpretation, together with multi-element and spectral analysis of drill samples has enabled several other target areas to be identified for exploration. The Velvet mining area is critical to continued production at Kanowna Belle. Geological understanding must advance as mining progresses to ensure continued resource growth and optimal extraction of reserves.CITATION:Lorusso, G, Rogers, J and Tripp, G, 2017. When shaft sinking was begun on the Vendome Mines property in the Barraute area of north-western Quebec, there was no indication of the flat mud seam that was later encountered, and no special precautions were taken in applying conventional methods of grouting. Failure of the first cementing attempt emphasized the important fact that mud is an adverse condition in grouting. A method was then devised that would remove the clay from those portions of the seam adjacent to the shaft, replacing it by a bulky mixture of cement and sawdust. Tests were carried out to insure that the seam had been properly sealed and that excavation could be resumed without endangering the shaft.

The paper reviews recent valuations of mineral properties, many of which are at an early stage of exploration. The various methods used are outlined. The problem of comparing, in terms of whether it is fair and reasonable, a highly subjective opinion of the present value of a portfolio of exploration tenements with a vendor consideration, the real value of which, in most cases, lies at some indeterminate time in the future because of the application by the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) of escrow conditions, is highlighted. Examples are given of some of the questionable logic used by consultants in handling this difficult issue. A proposal for revision to current flotation and listing practice which, the author believes, would circumvent the problem and at the same time provide better protection for the investing public is offered for Consideration.
