The down-stream size reduction processes such as crushing, grinding and milling, represent major expenditure of energy. The present study is aimed at linking the fragmentation characteristics of the rock feed in a crusher with the physical and mechanical properties of the rock and the energy expended in the process. This is done through a modified Hopkinson Pressure bar apparatus, where both the impact velocity and energy input can be carefully controlled. A single layer of rock particles of very narrow feed size range (9 mm - 12 mm) and occupying a fixed volume in a chamber is impacted by means of a striker. The resulting fragment size distribution is determined for two different rock types (e.g. a granite and a limestone), involving single and multiple impacts, with all other experimental parameters remaining constant. The progressive reduction in overall product size and detailed fragment size distribution curves are obtained through sieve analysis, for specified number of impacts. The resulting fragment size distribution is analyzed in the light two distribution functions, Rosin-Rammler and Swebrec.

The ANN method is applied to predict the P_80 size in one open pit gold mine in Peru. The ANN was implemented in Matlab programming language, and the results from the ANN are compared with data obtained using photo-fragmentation analysis software.

Rock fragmentation size distribution is often used as an important index to account for the blasting effect because it directly affects the subsequent loading, transportation, and secondary crushing. Due to the mismatching of explosive and rock wave impedance, high boulder yield often occurs which affects the blasting effect. In this study, methods of measuring rock acoustic impedance, rock strength point loading, and detonation wave velocity have been used to obtain more accurate input parameters. Then, in the watershed image segmentation technique, the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann and Rosin-Rammler distribution functions have been used to analyze and quantitatively describe the rock fragmentation size distribution in the existing muck-pile. Finally, taking the rock properties, explosive performance, blasting parameters, and system characteristic variable into consideration, support vector machine (SVM) regression model has been analyzed on the learning and prediction of samples. The results show that SVM has a good prediction accuracy, high precision, and strong generalization ability. The optimized matching coefficient of rock and explosive wave impedance K ranges from 2.50 to 2.58 times. This study has developed a series of simple, accurate methods for rock properties analysis, detonation wave velocity measurement, and muck-pile model image processing, and a basis for predicting and evaluating rock fragmentation size distribution and optimizing the matching coefficient before carrying out a blasting operation.

The Umuna epithermal precious metal deposit has provided the target for a simulated rock geochemistry exploration program, directed at bedrock exposed in the drainage system of eastern Misima Island. A geochemical halo to the deposit is readily recognised in the mafic meta-volcanic country rock. This halo is defined by anomalous results for both major (K, Na, Ca, Mg) and minor (Au, As, Sb, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ba, Rb, Sr, Cs, Bi, Ga, S) element geochemistry, extending further than 1km from the deposit. Such halos are sufficiently extensive to provide adequate exploration targets in the search for epithermal mineralisation, complementing mineralogic and secondary media geochemical investigations.

In mineral processing plants it is important to estimate rock composition, size and grindability to improve control of the grinding process. It is well known that variation in ore grindability and size distribution directly affects mills power consumption and throughput. This paper extends a general machine vision approach for on-line estimation of rock mixture composition using color information. Our proposed rock lithological recognition method requires the following steps: division of each image into sub-images, color feature extraction using the Binary Quaternion-Moment-Preserving thresholding technique (BQMP) and support vector machines (SVM) for classification. The BQMP thresholding technique splits the image in two and chooses representatives of each half using the histogram as features. The statistical parameters of the color data can be expressed using the quaternion moments into the representatives. This method can be recursively applied to the sub-images, obtaining 5x2n features in n iterations. Once the feature vector has been computed, each vector is assigned to one of three classes using a classifier. The method was tested on a database containing 20480 sub-images (64x43 pixels) of five ore types as follows: massive sulphide (MS), disseminated sulphide (DS), net textured (NT), gabbro (G), and peridotite (P). These ore types were assigned to three grindability classes: soft (MS), medium (DS and NT) and hard (G and P). The database was divided in 2 subsets: 15360 sub-images used for training and cross validation and 5120 sub-images used for test. The classification accuracy was compared with a method previously published based on a mixture of principal components analysis (PCA) for color, and wavelet texture analysis (WTA) for texture feature extraction. WTA-PCA approach reached a 76% accuracy in test while our BQMP method reached 90% of classification accuracy using only color features. Experimental results show that our proposed method yields excellent results compared to previously published results. A good understanding of the hardness of ore being handled and processed in a mining operation can significantly improve operational efficiencies by providing valuable data to support decision-making through the mining value chain (drilling, blasting, comminution). This study presents the results from the application of Machine Learning (ML) to predict rock hardness using various geophysical and geochemical features. Core samples from a mine site were logged using a multi-sensor core logging system. Measurements including ultrasonic p-wave and s-wave velocity, elemental concentration via portable XRF, and Leeb Hardness, were measured every 2 cm along the length of the core. The ML model was set up to predict the Leeb Hardness using the elemental concentrations and ultrasonic velocities as predictors. The Leeb Hardness values were grouped into three bins and used as a classification target for the ML models. Various ML models, including linear regression, support vector machines, decision tree, XGBoost, Random Forest, K-Nearest Neighbors, and Naïve Bayes were tested. The model performance demonstrated that the Random Forest and XGBoost models produced the highest accuracy of 74-91%. Random forest and XGBoost were then selected to perform regression models to estimate a Leeb hardness value rather than a hardness class. These models were able to estimate the Leeb hardness value by 4.57-4.87 % error.

The 1960's were an apparent turning point in the technological and social attitudes and awareness of the mining industry. From the late 19th century through to the early 20th century, one has always been presented with the picture of the rough and ready leaders of the mining industry who screamed for production and damned anything that got in the way of it. This attitude led to a certain alienation of the mining industry in the eyes of the general public. They saw an industry which was archaic in many of its practices and often heartless in its attitudes towards mankind. However, a gradual change spread through the industry and cracks began to appear in the hard facades of the mining companies. Resistance to change had almost become a standard operating procedure for many and consequently changes in technology had been slow in coming. The late 1950's and the 1960's saw a new awareness come into existence. As the mining company managements changed, there developed a realization that considerable efforts had to be made to bring the technology and social standing of the industry out of the dark ages and into the modern world. New advances were made in both metallurgical and mining technology. The 20th century technology of computers was accepted and became a standard tool of the industry.

The long awaited new Mining Engineering Handbook is taking shape under the leadership of A. B. Cummins, Chairman of the Editorial Advisory Board for the SME Mining Engineering Handbook, and Ivan Given, Editor-in-Chief. The last Mining Engineers' Handbook, the Peele edition, published by John Wiley and Sons, was last revised in 1941. This book was and still is a virtual mine of information although a good deal of its content, especially the cost tables, is becoming rather antiquated. The new one-volume work will contain approximately 1600 pages and be divided into 36 sections. The following quotation is from "Guidelines for evaluation of undergraduate curricula in geological engineering, mineral processing, and mining engineering" prepared by the Committee on Education of SME of AIME. "The objectives of the Engineers' Council for Professional Development (ECPD), as delineated in its constitution, are: (a) To promote and advance all phases of engineering education with a view to the promotion of the public welfare through the development of the better educated engineer and engineering technician." (Italics added.) The problem is that no one has as yet seriously developed a method of supplying engineering technicians. There were great hopes that the expansion of junior colleges would help satisfy this need. Sadly, they have not; and it appears they are unwilling or unable to supply the need for mineral engineering technologists. Apparently, the junior colleges cannot afford staff for such courses, even when the colleges are located in mining districts.

In Silver Plume, Colo., there is a bachelor miner who offers individualized tours of his mine, The Silver Cloud. It is an interesting tour because he drove the mine himself and the view from the shack up there is spectacular. Beside that, he will probably invite you into his kitchen to sit around the old cook stove and drink coffee. When Andy first started his tour business he put a sign on the main street to advertise the fact. The sign read in part: "Women not welcome, but they will be tolerated at $3.00 a head”- the usual fee is $2.50. The sign lasted about 48 hours. Andy had to take it down because "all the ladies in town got mad at me. Now I take them all for $2.50 right across the board," he says. The mining industry is not only reticent about hiring women but traditionally does not even permit women to enter some mines. It would appear, what with the recent action on an equal-rights-for- women amendment in Congress, that we may be wise to examine the prospect.

At the spring meeting of the Open Pit Division of AIME's Arizona Section, I was asked a question which indicates the acceleration of technical advancement. The question was: "How does an engineer at a properly keep abreast of what is new?" The fact that some 200 Arizona AIME members were at the meeting is a testimonial to the desire of these men to do just that- keep abreast. There is a great deal of talk in academic circles about the built-in obsolescence of an engineering or scientific education, too. About 100 commencement speakers every spring are sure to admonish the graduates that education is a continuing thing. Mining engineers are a small fraternity. We keep informed by talking to one another. Talking shop is valuable but there is no substitute for reading.

A university is a place to build minds and develop leaders. It provides the tools necessary for the development of new ideas which come from the inquisitive mind and is one of the stepping stones to management responsibilities for the truly ambitious. However, it is not always a financially sound investment! Lately, there have been several articles published on the economic advantages of a college education. These articles tend to average wages together according to education and years of service. Their tabulations generally include the chairman of the board, various vice presidents and plant managers and do not reflect the achievement of the average graduate. They consistently fail to include an analysis of the investment a college education requires. In reality, the bright high school graduate would make more real money over a 20-year period if he went directly to work "on the hill" than he would if he graduated from college. Furthermore, he would find little difference between his wages and those of the college graduate in the period from 20-30 years after high school graduation.

This is an opportune time to examine the disposition of practical rock mechanics in the mining industry. The rock mechanics world has put on steam with publication of a number of books and the organization of a large number of symposia and teaching seminars. SME has just published Stability ill Open Pit Mining. proceedings of a conference held In November 1970 in Vancouver, R.C. R book entitled Planning Open Pit Mines covering the entire range of open pit mining with emphasis on slope stability has just been published by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The Thirteenth Symposium on Rock Mechanics was held at the University of Illinois. Urbana-Champaign, during the last week of August. The University of British Columbia's Division of Continuing Education is holding a symposium and specialty seminars on stability in open pit mining during the first week in November. A tremendous planning effort has started to organize the Tl3ii.d Congress of the International Society of Rock Mechanics in Denver in 1974. This meeting is held every four years in the country of origin of the president of the Society. This third congress comes to the U.S.A. with Leonard Obert of the 17. S Bureau of Mines as president of the Society. The previous two were held in Lisbon. Portugal and Belgrade. Yugoslavia.

The first light of dawn was appearing through the window of the giant Pan American Boeing 747 as we crossed the Irish Coast on course into London's Heathrow Airport While still over Ireland, the plane began its descent and a few minutes later an announcement on the public address system informed us that we were coming up on Lands End. Cornwall, and would then begin our final approach into London. Barely visible below through the WISP). clouds were the Seven Sisters Lighthouse and the rugged cliffs of Lands End and Cape Cornwall, the westcrnmost point of England. Start at Lands End To a displaced Englishman, it seems amazing that technology has brought us to a point where large jet aircraft use Lands End as the starting marker for final approaches into London. It was not so very long ago that we considered the eight-hour car journey or the 12- hour train trip from London to Lands End as a major undertaking. Today, with the 180,000-lb thrust of four engines, this enormous aircraft transports 350 or more passengers that distance in a matter of a quarter of an hour. The incongruity of the situation is that the technology leading up to the development of the powerful jet engines used on: today's aircraft started with the ; invention of the steam engine which found its first commercial use some 300 years earlier in the mines of Cornwall 20,000 ft below.

SME hopes to publish its first separate volume of Mining Exploration Transactions later this year. The reason for this separate publication was stated in "Rock in the BOX," December 1969 [ ], p. 14, as follows: "Because of the great upsurge in mineral exploration (during) the last few years and the fragmentation and narrow specialization of the earth sciences into a great many fields not directly related to exploration, many explorationists feel that a need for a special journal devoted to mineral exploration now exists." To summarize the history behind this change in publication policy of the Mining and Exploration Division, we go back to 1968 when a small group of M&E Division members advocated the establishment of an entirely separate journal devoted specifically to exploration. S. Parker Gay Jr. was appointed chairman of an ad hoc committee to investigate the feelings of the other Division members toward such a journal. Approximately one thousand questionnaires were sent out and the returns showed an extremely favorable reaction. Gay reported the results of his survey to the M&E Division Executive Committee Meeting in Salt Lake City in September 1969. These results were also published in the December 1969 issue of [ ].

Myriad problems face all of us in the next decade. Vietnam, poverty, and pollution are perhaps the most pres- sing. A lesser one but still vital to us as a Nation is the slow hut apparently relentless extinction of the mining, metallurgical. geological and petroleum engineer. Are we doomed to take our place in the crossword puzzle with the moa. to be defined like it as an "extinct bird"? Or can we reverse the trend perhaps, in the next decade? The plain fact is we are an endangered species, and must resign ourselves to virtual extinction in the 1970's unless the trend is reversed. Probably, many of us have felt the problem will solve itself if left in the in-basket long enough, believing, that the trend will reverse solely on the basis of demand for these disciplines. This approach has not worked up to now, it gives no promise of working in the future, and furthermore, the problem has been in the in-basket much too long. The point is simply this: What can each of us do as an individual, or as part of a company, a State agency, a Federal agency, a university, or an organization such as AIME?

In the debate between miners and ecologists, our industry has at last begun to get some of its story told. I have been told many times that it is hopeless to even try to get our side across. Some are sure that no one will believe us even when our cause is just. My reply would be that we have to tell the truth; again, again, and again. We will never convert a fanatic, but we must try to reach the reasonable and thinking people. I am encouraged because more of us are trying. Various mining companies here in Arizona have bought newspaper space to set forth some of the facts around our local environmental problems. The Arizona Mining Association co-sponsored a symposium in March: Mining and Ecology in the Arid Environment. The symposium program included tours arranged with local mining companies. The participants saw an acid plant, an acid leaching operation, an alluvial tailings dike, a tailings pond, a smelter, and a couple of open pit mines. This wouldn't phase you until you realized that half the visitors were ecologists, watershed and wild- life managers, and other assorted conservationists. It took a lot of guts. I am proud that we had that much confidence. As Pogo said, "We have met the enemy and they is us!" Actually, we met the enemy and they were just like us-concerned.
