The Mount Morgan ore-body is intersected by dykes to such an extent that it presents peculiarly difficult problems in extracting ore. These are shown on Plates Nos. LXVII. and LXVIII. Besides ,these dykes there are innumerable "heads," which alsoare a source of danger. Falls of ore occurred in the end of the year 1908, resulting in serious loss of life to miners employed. It was decided, after an exhaustive inquiry, to change the entire system of mining from the" flat backed stope system" to the" square set sectional system ," the latter being more flexible and allowing bad ground to be cut out from a safe position; but it became evident that, whatever system was adopted, there would be more or less danger unless all the dykesand heads known were picked up, and their continuation plotted on a special set of plans on which the general scheme of stoping could be plotted from time to time as work progressed. It is worth while pointing out that, in every other branch of engineering, it is usual to design the work, and that only in mining engineering has it been common to do the work first and plot it down afterwards.The term "sectional analysis" is familiar in most branches of engineering design, and as applied in this paper to mining, may not bear the same meaning, but the general purpose is analagous, and there is no other term used.

MINE power systems are quite different in many respects from those usually found in industrial plants. Wide areas are served, usually by a circuit which is connected continuously throughout the mine. In some mines one circuit may run for several miles. There are usually a small number of branch circuits involved considering the areas covered. In all mines circuits are sectionalized at approximately 2500 ft by means of switches. All, or at least most branch circuits, are sectionalized by manual switches. In some mines automatic sectionalizing gear is used to give automatic overload protection at various strategic points in the system. However at the present time this practice is by no means general. Circuit hazards in mine electric systems are much greater than those encountered in industrial installation. Falls of roof or coal form a prominent hazard which may break the wire and may cause ground faults or partial ground faults. Ordinarily electric cables in mines cannot be insulated, there- fore n fall can easily cause a short circuit. The humidity in most mines is greater than 95 pct and at many points the floor is wet and water may be dripping from the roof over insulators, increasing the difficulties at that point. All electrical circuits must be contained in the mine entries and space must also be provided for moving equipment and men. Consequently, because of the proximity of the power circuit to the locomotives and other moving equipment a considerable hazard is introduced. Mine haulage track is not always good so that wrecks are not unusual. A wreck frequently does consider- able damage to the power circuit. A ground fault frequently results in heavy arcing which may be sustained. If the damage to the circuit is mechanical it may mean that a trip of coal has wrecked and a great deal of coal dust could be thrown into the air as a result of the wreck. The arc resulting from the ground fault could ignite the coal dust and a mine explosion would result. A continued ground fault, even if high in resistance, also may ignite the coal which may be on the bottom of the entry and a mine fire may result. The fire hazard is one of the most serious hazards in any coal mine. Since the mine circuit is completely interconnected, any power interruption resulting from a fault seriously affects the whole operation. Unless the mine is completely sectionalized the whole mine will be shut down until the fault is located and the proper switches are opened to isolate the fault; even then large areas may still be without power if they are supplied by a single power circuit which may be opened in isolating the fault. Further, mine power is usually supplied from a relatively small number of substations and the fault may be on a stub feed circuit, in which case power cannot be restored until the fault has been cleared. Practice varies widely with respect to placement of substations. Usually they will be spaced from I to 2 miles in 500V operations, and at 1 mile intervals or less, in 250 V operation. Actual mining operations govern substation placements and no general rules can be followed.

The distribution of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits through time is episodic, involving relatively short time intervals of apparent high productivity and long intervals of low productivity. This distribution is principally related to the geodynamic evolution of the Earth. The vast majority of these deposits is associated with the assembly of supercontinents and form along convergent margins, generally in back-arc basins or rifted arcs. This contrasts with the distribution of black smoker deposits, which presently form along both convergent margins, particularly in the western Pacific, and divergent margins at mid-ocean ridges. However, the latter environment is rarely preserved deep into the geological past.There also appear to be systematic patterns in a number of other features of volcanic-hosted massive deposits through time. Deposits hosted by mafic-dominated successions are dominant in Archean to Proterozoic rocks, whereas deposits hosted by felsic-dominated successions are most common in Phanerozoic rocks. Geochemical characteristics of felsic rocks within the host successions and ore lead and sulfur isotope data of the ores have also changed with time. This suggests changes in the process of subduction and/or changes in the characteristics of the over-riding plate with time, consistent with isotopic and geologic evidence for greater reworking of pre-existing crust during the Phanerozoic.Other secular changes that are reflected in characteristics of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits include the redox state and salinity of coeval oceans. As an example, both the abundance of sulfate minerals and sulfur isotope patterns reflect the development of periods of anoxic conditions over time, with major intervals of anoxia reflected by a virtual lack or low abundance of sulfate minerals in volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits in the Mesoarchean to the Palaeoproterozoic, and shorter intervals since.CITATION:Huston, D L, Eglington, B, Pehrsson, S, Piercey, S and Doublier, M, 2015. HAVE been asked many times by financial men in New York as to the best way of securing an interest or control of a gold mine in Canada. It must be understood at the start that prospectors and early owners will not sell a 100 per cent interest. They not only retain from 10 to 25 per cent interest, depending upon the work done, but usually demand more or less cash to reimburse them for expenses. These conditions are accepted by Canadian capital and operating mines looking for new properties. The winter is not a hindrance to work but may be of great advantage. The overburden of soil and gravel is generally wet and most difficult to trench in the summer time especially if at all deep. The snow also permits easy transportation of freight. Properties distant from rail transport all of their machinery and supplies during the winter months.

"In the southern region of Vietnam and the southern United States, numbers of Deep Mixing (DM) columns have been installed to increase the stability of slopes and mitigate ground settlement. However, in some cases, there were some quality problems for in-situ cement mixing such as inclusion of unmixed lumps. According to the investigations by the X-ray diffraction analyses, electrical conductivity (EC) test, and careful observations of in-situ mixing quality, it has been observed that the existence of expansive soil and its high EC value cause the insufficient in-situ mixing. The countermeasures to address these problems have been taken.INTRODUCTIONIn South Vietnam, under the guidance of numbers of references and standards (Miki, 1998, JGS, 2000, Kitazume et.al., 2001, BS 2005), Deep Mixing (DM) has been used in recent years for soft clay improvement to increase the stability of slopes and to reduce consolidation settlement (Nozu 2005, Tung et.al., 2009, S. T. G. Peng et.al, 2009). However, at the initial phase of the DM operation, the authors have encountered some unusual phenomena such as (1) lower strength and inclusion of unmixed lumps (Figure 1), (2) less amount of up-heaved soil, and (3) sticking of large lumps of clay to the mixing blades. In regard to the above (3), Photo 1 shows one of the countermeasures against the sticking. By means of the placement of additional plates, the stuck clay has been reduced significantly.Subsequently, we have noticed that the quality of DM columns has not been so good, which meant that there have been some unmixed lumps in the column despite high cement dosage such as more than 300kg/m3. The authors also have encountered the similar incidents in Vietnam and United States during the deep soil mixing work. For example, Photo 2 is the core samples taken from the DM test column in northern Vietnam adopting cement injection during penetration (CIDP) procedure. To solve this problem, various tests and investigations have been performed so far (Nozu 2010, 2012)."

"At the beginning of 2007 the Austrian contractor PORR was awarded with remediation works for a 48-km long part of the railway line from Campina to Predeal – part of the Trans European main Corridors TEN-T priority line 22 Bucurest – Brasov, connecting the southeast European countries with the heart of Europe.Due to partly new realignment and change of regular sections as well as protection against rockfall and slope slide a huge bunch of slope stabilization works became necessary, which were awarded to the contractor PORR and their designer IB-Brandner.Following the studies of the tender documents for the planned protection measures responsible managers of PORR decided to propose an alternative protection design by IB- Brandner. Changing the original design a more flexible and environmentally compatible solution consisting of high performance net, soil nailing and rockfall protection systems (fences) was elaborated and adapted to local needs. During design process, several critical areas were identified and additionally taken into account.In the paper examples of the design and erection process show how difficulties in implementation starting with the presentation of the idea continuing to the realization on site were managed and a technically more sophisticated and commercially competitive solution could be delivered to the customer Romanian Railway – case study.The European Commission awarded – following an election process in which all citizens of the EU could join - the remediation project Railway line Campina – Predeal in Romania as the environmentally best EU co-financed infrastructure project. GENERAL PROJECT EVALUATIONDue to original design slope stabilization should be done by concrete slabs fixed with prestressed anchors and shotcrete cover.The area to be secured was limited to a 12-meter strip left and right from the railway track without reference to nature and local needs. Discussions with the client and his designer and rising awareness for the hazards to address took several months. Site visits in Austria to provide insight in the problems of dealing with natural hazards helped to convince the client of the needs and our alternative design."

This article examines the factors related to injuries due to inadequate blasting shelters and blast area security, and identifies mitigation techniques. The key concepts are:(a) accurate determination of the bounds of the blast area, (b) clearing employees from the blast area, (c) effective access control, (d) use of adequate blasting shelters, (e) efficient communications, and (f)training. Fundamentals are reviewed with an emphasis on analyzing task elements and identifying root causes for selected blasting accidents. Introduction Loss prevention programs have become absolutely necessary at any precious metals producing property. In the past eight years, one security company, specializing in precious metals mine, mill, and refinery security, has been involved in investigations at gold and silver properties that have resulted in 62 criminal convictions. Of those, all but five were employees, former employees, contract employees, or vendors for the company. Several of the cases involved losses of more than $1 million. The largest number of employees prosecuted from one investigation was 17. A recent case resulted in 12 criminal prosecutions and, several years ago, one involved an additional 12 criminal prosecutions. The most serious theft problem facing precious metals mines is employee theft. Is is estimated that 95% of the dollar losses from precious metals thefts can be attributed to employees. This does not mean there is no robbery or burglary exposure. There have been successful robberies, burglaries, and extortion cases. Most mining companies, though, provide better protection against external theft than from internal theft. That is one reason employee theft has reached epidemic proportions. Any product can be stolen No product is immune to theft. Precious metals investigations have involved the theft of high grade ore, dore, bullion, concentrates, precipitates, loaded steel wool, loaded carbon, and sump cleanup. Over a period of several years, this author's security agency has documented the theft of more than 22.5 t (25 st) of load carbon. Most mining companies do not protect the number one adsorption tank or the loaded carbon screens, which frequently leads to losses. Precipitates, electrowinning tank sludge, sump material, and concentrates are usually afforded lit¬tle protection because mine management believes it is too difficult to process. There are custom mills throughout the United States that will process any form of precious metals with no questions asked. This has become a particular problem since the certificate of ownership requirement has been eliminated by most states. Due to the large number of gold mines coming on line, many mine managers are being recruited from base metal mines, where primary security problems involve the theft of tools and company property. These managers do not understand the unique security problems associated with precious metals production. Consequently, they usually forego many security needs in the interest of economy. Unfortunately, numerous cases are on file where mining companies have suffered large losses because their physical security and their security procedures were not adequately addressed when the property was in its planning stages. When addressing Germany’s resource supplies, we need to distinguish between those domestically available and imported ones. Resource extraction ostensibly competes with the designation of protection areas. However, the parallel existence of wildlife and plant life, and operations in the areas used for resource extractions is continually underestimated. The European Commission has compiled guidance documents facilitating the extraction of resources from protected areas. With regard to resource productivity, the market appears to be the appropriate instrument for minimising resource consumption. Policy makers are now called upon to create a legal framework leading to a consensus accepted by society.

In February of this year at the Washington, D.C., hearings of the Interior Department on the Alaska pipeline, the author was amazed to hear speaker after speaker oppose not only pipline construction but any development whatsoever in the State of Alaska. In one case, a man objected to development in Alaska because his neighbor in Maryland had cut down some shade trees. Another man recited at length from the poems of Robert W. Service. While it seemed inconceivable that such thoughtless opposition should have any effect, a check with the offices of some congressmen showed that mail was largely against any development of Alaska. In the barrage of words and redundant phrases directed against Alaska, it is difficult to find a thought worthy of study. Fortunately, there is a statutory guide towards resolution of the problem of development versus non- development. This law, the Environ- mental Protection Act of 1969, has indeed given much of industry the jitters; copper smelters see no way to comply with the new sulfur- emission standards, the Alaska Department of Highways estimates that the Act has nearly doubled the cost of planning and engineering for highway construction. In spite of these and many other troubles and costs, the Act provides a sound legal basis for defeating nihilistic emotions and, since Alaska is relatively undeveloped, adoption of environmental safeguards will be simpler than correcting longstanding abuses.

"Abstract - As a contribution to the World Minerals Geoscience Database Project, an index-level database comprising information on 142 SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits and occurrences was constructed in Microsoft Access 95 format. Although consisting of only basic information, the compilation, with full referencing of all data, is possibly the largest non-corporate SEDEX Pb-Zn database in the world. It thus provides an opportunity to make geoscience queries of SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits on a scale not previously available. This report provides a summary of the results of a few such queries both as a contribution to a better understanding of SEDEX lead-zinc deposits and as a demonstration of what even such a simple database can offer.During the compilation process, it became apparent that SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits could be assigned to one of the following three sub-types: Type 1 (53.5% of total) in which sulfide minerals are the only exhalative components; Type 2 (33.1%) in which the exhalative components are sulfides plus chert, siderite/ankerite, and/or barite; Type 3 (13.4%) which contains any components of Types 1 and 2 plus abundant iron-oxide minerals (commonly magnetite) and/or is associated with iron oxide-rich sedimentary rocks.Highlights of systematic queries of the database reveal that:1. a majority (84%) of the world’s SEDEX Pb-Zn deposits are not underlain by a discordant footwall feeder zone or vent complex;2. 63.6% of deposits occur in Proterozoic strata followed by a second peak in the Devonian (16.8%). Of those in the Proterozoic, 83% of Type 3 deposits occur in the Gondwanaland supercontinent, whereas only 42% of Type 2 and 39% of Type 1 are located in this large paleo-landmass;3. median (Pb+Zn) grades in Types 1 and 2 fall between 9% and 10% with a majority clustering within this range. Type 3 grades, however, range from ~1% to ~20% (Pb+Zn) with a median of 5%; 4. median size of Type 3 deposits is ~33 Mt, whereas Type 1 and 2 median sizes are ~7 Mt and ~8 Mt, respectively.The report concludes with a brief discussion of how an index-level database such as this can be used in conjunction with other, similar databases to reveal interesting and instructive relationships for guiding both research and exploration."

Sediment is one of America's greatest pollutants. More than a billion tons of sediment reach the major streams of the United States annually(l). Damages are reflected in the reduced carrying capacity of streams, clogged reservoirs, destroyed habitat for fish and other aquatic life, filled navigation channels, increased flood crests, degraded facilities for water-based recreation, increased industrial and domestic water treatment costs, premature aging of lakes by enrichment of the water with silt-carried fertilizer that promotes algae growth, destroy crops, and reduce productivity of flood plain soils. Erosion and sedimentation are natural processes that are usually gentle actions releasing controlled amounts of silt from watersheds to receiving streams. Surface mining activities accelerate these natural processes and short duration, high intensity storms can become a violent force moving thousands of tons of soil in a brief period of time. Cover is a very important factor. With the removal of ground cover, water moves across the denuded area on its own terms picking up soil particles as it flows and leaving gullies behind. The susceptibility of strip-mined land to erosion depends on: 1.Physical characteristics of the overburden 2. Degree of slope 3. Length of slope 4. Climate 5. Amount and rate of rainfall 6. Type and percent of vegetative ground cover. By development of erosion and sedimentation control plans before disturbance of the area, many of the detrimental effects of strip mining can be prevented.

Such settling processes rapidly lead to the buildup of a bed of flocs that are essentially close-packed, with an inter-floc porosity of perhaps 50%. However, the overall solids content is no more than about 2% to 3% by volume. Consequently, the thickening process is dominated by the bed consolidation rather than by the simple settling of the individual flocs. Experimental measurements of sediment consolidation in flocculated clay suspensions indicate, for a given system, that consolidation rates are essentially determined by the solids concentration and can be evaluated using the classical Kynch treatment. However, these rates are strongly dependent on the physical, as well as the chemical, conditions of the flocculation process. Furthermore, the extent to which gravity consolidation proceeds depends on the total weight of the sediment (i.e., on the bed height and the solids concentration). The implications with respect to thickener operation and the requirements for the laboratory testing for thickener design are discussed.

The chemical composition of the nodules varies with the type of manganese minerals and the size and characteristics of their nucleus, but those who have an economic interest have the following composition: Mn 29%, Fe 6% Si 5%, Al 3%, Ni 1.4%, Cu 1.3%, Co 0.25%, Na 1.5%, Ca 1.5%, Mg 0.5%, K 0.5%, Ti 0.2 0.2% and Ba 0.2% (Morgan, 2000; ISA, 2002). The Pacific Rim is an area of abundant occurrence of polymetallic nodules (Glasby et al., 1980; Morgan, 2000). According to these authors, the Pacific sea floor of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) is one of the most interesting areas in regard to the genesis of polymetallic nodules. Their abundance in the ocean floor is very variable, as there are places where they cover more than 70% of the ocean floor. The nodules can be found at any depth, but the highest concentrations are between 4000 and 6000m (Morgan et al., 1993). In studies conducted in the EEZ of the Mexican Pacific are those made within the project "Research on the origin, process and distribution of minerals in the Pacific ocean floor in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Mexico". Within this project Rosales (1989) conducted studies on the origin, process and distribution of polymetallic nodules, finding that a number of processes give origin to nodules, being diagenesis one of the main mechanisms of elements that contribute to the nodules. Besides hydrothermal processes that are carried near the East Pacific Rise at 21° N, inputs are contributing to the nodules metallic elements and sediments, especially in regions close to the dorsal, as a greater influence hydrogenetic processes occurs westward (Rosales and Carranza, 1990). In 1993, after cruise MIMAR II, Carranza and Rosales refer that metals such as Cu, Co, Ni, Sn, Fe, Mg, Pb, Zn and Ba may have a relationship with the East Pacific hydrothermal activity and sea currents carry these metals in solution to the Clarion-Clipperton fracture area, where there are hydrogenic metals sources (Al, Fe and Mn). As result of chemical analysis of Mn, Cu, Ni and Co, polymetallic nodules observed in part of the EEZ of Mexico are possible of potential economic interest (Rosales and Carranza, 1990, 2001; Carranza and Rosales, 2003).
