Launching a panel session isn't easy but after Associate Dean Howard Hartman from Pennsylvania State had made his statement, it was obvious that the balloon would go up. Hartman sees a crisis and gave its dimensions. Even with enrollments declining, there are not enough graduates being recruited by the mineral industry. Opportunities in the mining field are not attractive to youth in the face of competition from other disciplines. Nor will we be able to fill our ranks with good men from other engineering disciplines because they won't be attracted either. Salaries are too low. In 1966, mining engineers from Penn State averaged $660 per month starting. The average of all other engineers was $683 per month. The mining engineers ranked seventh out of nine disciplines. The bad image of the mineral field is created in part by industry which offers poor working conditions and inconsequential jobs and in part by the schools which have unimaginative curricula and poor teaching. Hartman called for immediate action and had his own set of solutions ready. "The gut of the problem is pay. Boost starting engineers $100 to $150 a month and older employees in commensurate manner. Compensate for poor working locations by better environment on the job." He did not fail to add that improvement of the public image of the mineral industry is needed. He called for elimination of all of the "schisms," or subdivisions of mineral industry curricula, and suggested a unified curriculum with a name such as "Geo-engineering."

INTRODUCTION. IN India the production of mica, which in other countries is of very minor importance, is one of the staple, long established industries, and ranks high in the statistics of mineral products. Nearly two-thirds of the mica of commerce comes from India. The Indians have used mica for glazing and decorative purposes through many centuries. About 14,000 men are employed in and about the mines, and the indigenous and primitive mode of mining is still followed; but, by reason of the exhaustion of the surface supply hitherto won without intelligence or capital, it will not be many years before the present interesting and casual methods will be replaced by a less archaic and more profitable system. India on the whole has little mineral wealth, but the unique resources of its mica fields, cheap labor, and favorable natural conditions render it unlikely that any other country can ever more than temporarily contest her leadership in the production of this one minor but essential mineral. Mica plays a small but indispensable role in a variety of fields of dissimilar application. Its use and value depend upon characteristics which different kinds of mica have in varying degrees, each kind being adapted to 'its own special purpose. Its well-known characteristics of transparency, flexibility, elasticity, toughness, high dialectric, strength, perfect flatness; ease of splitting into thin films, ability to stand high heat and sudden changes in temperature, give it value in many industries. No other substance, natural or artificial, has this combination of qualities. The oldest use of mica is in glazing. Few Earth Scientists realize fully the assumptions they are making, willing or not, when pooling into a same histogram data coming from different locations and considering such histogram as an estimate of a probabilistic distribution. First they need the hypothesis of stationarity in space; second the presence of spatial auto-correlations implies that data be unequally weighted according to their relative locations and the degree of spatial continuity of the underlying phenomenon. The novel technique of indicator kriging allows construction of local or global histogram which can be considered as unbiased estimators of precisely defined probabilistic distributions, full account being given to the underlying continuity. Such estimates of local distributions can be used in mine planning for estimation of local recoverable reserves.

This paper reports the results of induction time measurements carried out on the products of film flotation of galena and sphalerite particles from three different size fractions (38~75µm; 75~150µm; 150~212µm). As expected, the tailings (sinking fraction) from film flotation at any particular surface tension, had always longer induction times than the concentrates (floating fraction), for both minerals. The difference between the induction times of film flotation concentrate and tailings could be as little as 2.5 ms and 5 ms, and as large as 6 ms and 10 ms. These differences can be related to the different hydrophobic characteristics of these fractions, as expressed by (?c) and composition of the particular film flotation product. In addition, the induction times of the larger particle size fraction were shown to be longer than for the corresponding smaller particle size fraction, even though the average ?c(degree of hydro-phobicity) of these fractions appears to be very similar. Desliming, Cu activation and collector addition to the sphalerite samples was shown to decrease the induction time values significantly.

During the last 30 years the inductive electro- magnetic method has been used chiefly in the search for massive sulphide mineralization. This application has met with varying degrees of success and in recent years has resulted in discovery of several large orebodies. Little has been written concerning its use in exploration for soft iron ores, but one of the present authors has reported on experiments with massive magnetic deposits. To augment the exploration tools available to geologists in delineating iron orebodies, Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. and McPhar Geophysics Ltd. undertook in 1953 to apply the inductive electromagnetic method to Cleveland-Cliffs properties in the Lake Superior region. As a result of this project, equipment has been developed that enables simultaneous transmission of two audio frequency waves, and the field technique and interpretative procedure involved have furthered exploration in the district significantly.

This bulletin summarizes the results of Bureau of Mines research on the development of the inductoslag melting process. Inductoslag melting is an induction melting technique using a segmented, water-cooled, copper crucible. The process was developed as part of the Bureau's work on effective utilization of reactive metal scrap, and the process has been applied to melting Ti, Zr, Cr, Co, Fe, Ni, and V. Construction details are given for the segmented crucibles and for both an ingot furnace and a casting furnace. The melting process is described, and results of tests conducted with a variety of reactive metals are given.

ORMROD (Visitor) A correlation between the potential of a U02 electrode and the rate of recovery of uranium has been proved in laboratory and plant trials. When the recovery rates change because of variation in the concentrations of Fe(III), Fe(II), SO4 'and H+, a positive correlation is observed. However, an 2- increase in the concentration of phosphate in solution produces an increase in the U02 electrode potential but a decrease in the rate of leaching of U02. The correlation between the U02 electrode potential and the rate of leaching of U02 is then negative. It is concluded that, as a control device, the electrode cannot compete with the platinum electrode for use on certain plants. Nevertheless, the U02 electrode will act as a useful warning device if the total concentration of iron in solution decreases to below a level concomitant with the economic recovery of uranium. Furthermore, because of the positive correlation between the U02 electrode potential and the phosphte concentration, the electrode will also be of value in the detection of an increase in the phosphate level in solution. When it was incorporated in a suitable industrial probe, the electrode was found to be able to withstand the rigours of the leaching conditions in a large pilot-plant pachuca, and only failed after six weeks' operation.

"Low and inconsistent recoveries of aluminum in the production of aluminum-killed steels triggered an extensive research program on the aluminum dissolution kinetics at McGill University. This research program led to the understanding of the melting kinetics and the hydrodynamics of making additions to liquid steel. It showed the necessity of gradually releasing liquid aluminum at the bottom of the ladle to increase aluminum recoveries.This knowledge was verified in practice at Sidbec-Dosco, where a prototype aluminum wire injector was developed and installed for the first time in Canada. The industrial application showed the validity of the theoretical and experimental results and provided further data for the mathematical modelling of the process.The development of the theoretical understanding, the industrial results, and the interaction between university and industry are presented.IntroductionAluminum is an extremely effective deoxidizer of molten steel; nevertheless, an efficient method of adding it to steel has eluded steelmakers for many years. It is well known that the recovery of aluminum used in the production of aluminum killed steel is both low and eratic, especially when the aluminum is added in the form of bars or lumps from chutes into filling ladles, a practice still common in many of today's steelmaking operations.As the density of aluminum is only about 40010 that of molten steel, it is conceivable that loose bars of aluminum simply ""thrown"" into a filling ladle will resurface before any appreciable dissolution of the aluminum has occurred, particularly if the depth of penetration of the additions is small. Before one can conclude that this is indeed the case, it is necessary to know the melting kinetics of an aluminum addition. Back in 1972, this information was not available; hence an extensive research program which focused on melting kinetics was initiated at McGill University."

Anglo Asian Mining have recently installed an industrial-scale UF/RO plant to treat process liquors from the integrated heap leach/agitation leach/ resin-in-pulp gold ore treatment facilities at their Gedabek gold-copper mine in Azerbaijan. The UF/RO plant is designed to treat 60 m3/h of leach solution to produce discharge quality water. The RO concentrate, which contains elevated concentrations of copper, silver and cyanide, is sent to the company’s SART plant for the recovery of the metal values as a precipitated sulphide concentrate and the cyanide, which is recycled to leaching. The new water treatment plant improves the sustainability of the operations at Gedabek by enabling replacement of fresh water input with RO permeate and safe discharge of permeate to the environment, during periods of excess water balance. The paper includes pilot plant data and early results from the full-scale plant.

INTRODUCTION The process of froth flotation as a means of upgrading the quality of coal by removing water and/or ash and/or pyrite has been receiving increasing attention since the 1960's by the world-wide coal industry. Historically, coal preparation practice has involved the use of primarily gravity based separation techniques, screening, and/or water washing in removing the larger fragments of inert material from coarse raw feed coal. The preparation, handling, and cleaning of raw coal finer than 500 micrometers was deliberately avoided. Most often the fine coal that was produced would be judiciously incorporated into the bulk of the larger sized cleaned coal product or simply discarded. Since the 1960's and accelerating in the 19701s, the desirability of performing some type of coal cleaning or upgrading on the finer raw coal feed materials has been increasing. There are several apparent industrial incentives for implementing fine coal ((500 urn) processing alternatives including the gradually increasing value of the normally lost fine coal product; the additional amounts of fine coal being produced due to changes in mining techniques; the need to appropriately dewater and upgrade fine coal streams in order to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations on water quality. storage of fines, etc.; the increasing need to lower undesired sulfur and ash contents in some coal end-use applications; and the increasing development of speciality coal use processes that require inherently finer and cleaner coal particles such as in gasification, liquefaction, fuel injection, etc. Looking at the over 70 years of mineral oriented fine particle separation successes at the industrial level, the use of froth flotation in fine coal would also seem to be a natural process to utilize at the industrial level. In the world of strictly mineral processing technology and, more importantly in the world of mineral commodity economics, there are clearly a number of advantages to using froth flotation that are well documented and universally accepted. These include: the relatively low capital and space requirements required when compared to other process options available to upgrade minerals; the extreme flexibility inherent to the froth flotation process both with regard to throughput and differences in raw feed characteristics; the general availability of a wide range of equipment sizes and reliable suppliers of equipment; and the general availability of appropriate and relatively cheap chemicals that are the major driving forces behind mineral flotation. Just how has the implementation of froth flotation fared in coal upgrading over the last 20 years? It is towards answering this question that this paper will be oriented. As such, the discussion will be somewhat philosophical. The comments offered are based on the personal experiences of this author who has worked in the basic side of inventing new flotation chemistry and flotation analysis techniques with the major overriding goal of implementing this new technology successfully at the industrial level in both coal and mineral flotation throughout much of the world. This paper is not intended to be a complete reference to all published scientific work on the subject of industrial froth flotation of coal. As a brief background to what will be expanded upon in this paper, the author would like to offer the following summary comments: 1) the industrial practice of fine coal froth flotation is qualitatively similar but quantitatively different than industrial mineral froth flotation when viewed from either research considerations, operating viewpoints or economic evaluation criteria; 2) it is clearly possible to invent and/or develop new technology (such as new chemistry and/or equipment) that can do statistically better than current plant practice in well-controlled tests in either coal or mineral flotation circuits; 3) there is so much inherent variability to the raw feed coal streams and other operating parameters that even if there is a documented technical incentive to implement some new piece of technology, the people, instrumentation and control methodology required are often simply not available or not economic unless the potential payoff is quite large.

Lake stone is a term currently applied to chemical and metallurgical grade limestone or dolomite that is brought down Lakes Michigan and Huron by large cargo vessels, mostly self-unloaders. This stone comes from 5 quarries, all in Michigan and all steel company owned. The volume in 1973 was over 34 million tons. The primary reasons for the large volume are the quantity and quality of the stone available, and the low delivery costs to lower lakes markets. The source rocks are Silurian and Devonian limestones and dolomites of exceptional purity. The regional dip of these formations is 50 to 60 feet per mile southerly toward the lowest point in the Michigan structural basin, which is near the center of the Southern Peninsula. Two of the 5 quarries, both high calcium limestone sources, are on Lake Huron in the northeastern part of the Southern Peninsula. The other three are in the Northern Peninsula; one at the northern end of Lake Michigan, and two on northern Lake Huron. The western quarry is in limestone, the other two in dolomite.

It is no need to say that exploitation of industrial minerals has a close relation to development of the industries related. In the first stage, a small scale manufactures were initiated in areas producing some main raw material minerals. China and cement manufactures, for example, were established depending on the local occurrence of raw materials such as kaolin and limestone without exception. That is, the industrial development is greatly influenced by the local production of the raw materials in the stage. With the development of industrial technology, various kinds of raw material minerals are explored to meet the demands of industries in the second stage. New materials become indispensable, and low-grade raw material minerals, which were left as useless, are developed as useful materials. In the stage, the development of raw material minerals is accelerated by that of industrial technology related. However, industries mainly rely on domestic production of the min raw material minerals.

Industrial minerals are extremely important to downstream industries and in our everyday lives. Their ontribution to the UK economy and to society as a whole is greatly underestimated. The industrial minerals sector is lacing increased pressures - environmental and competitive - both at home and abroad. These pressures are likely to increase. The Government, working in conjunction with the industry, can help the industry to meet these challenges. The role of Government is to establish a dialogue w ith the industry, to find out what its concerns are.and to ensure that these are taken into account in the draw ing up of policies that affect it. There is also a role for it in exploring, with industry, the linkages between environmental improvement and competitive advantage, and giving, w herever possible, early warning about regulatory developments. In order to maximise the effectiveness of links, industry needs to be coherently organised and represented both in the UK and in the European Union (EU).

In the majority of industrial operations recovering gold and silver by hydrometallurgical means, cyanide is the predominant lixiviant. However, as an economic alternative, production of massive quantifies of silver chloride was done on an industrial scale in the nitrous-sulfuric acid pressure leaching of a refractory precious metals concentrate. This proven process required no cyanide. Thus, because of the large volumes encountered during day-to-day plant operation, the need for efficient and low cost methods of silver chloride precipitation, reduction and materials handling was mandatory. As such, this paper covers the evolution of plant scale precipitation, filtration, washing, reduction and control of silver chloride processing. As well, an in-depth description of the unique leaching system is included.

Coal flotation has been practiced since about 1920 in Europe and since about 1926 in the U.S. Over 200 U.S. coal preparation plants now use the process to recover coal. Over the 60 year period, the fundamental principles upon which flotation is based have been enumerated, but the interaction between the parameters that affect flotation has not been quantified and a useful model which accounts for these parameters has not yet been developed. A comprehensive and user friendly kinetic model coupled with better process monitoring and control instrumentation would allow plant operating personnel to better predict flotation performance and better control the flotation process in coal preparation plants.

INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is the most widely used and economic means of concentrating metal sulfide ores such as those containing copper, lead, zinc, nickel, molybdenum, and pyrite. Also recoverable are other metal species that are often associated with sulfide ores such as cobalt, platinum, gold, silver, etc. Froth flotation is a physico-chemical process for separating finely ground minerals from their associated gangue material. The process involves chemical treatment of a finely divided (ground) ore in a water pulp to create conditions favorable for the attachment of certain of the mineral particles to air bubbles. The air bubbles then carry the selected minerals, called valuable, to the surface of the pulp to form a stabilized froth which is removed and recovered. The unattached gangue material remains submerged in the pulp and is either discarded or reprocessed. To obtain the adherence of the desired mineral particles to the air bubbles, at least two specific steps must occur: a hydrophobic (water hating) surface film must be formed on the particles to be floated along with a hydrophillic (water wetting) film on all other particles; and a controlled bubble surface tension interface must be maintained, allowing for high particlelbubble collision frequency and efficient attachment or sticking of the particle to the bubble once collision has taken place. In most flotation applications, the above two steps are controlled by chemical flotation reagents. The collector is a chemical reagent which produces the hydrophobic film on the valuable mineral particle and is the primary driving force that initiates the flotation process. The frother is a chemical reagent which influences the collision frequency and attachment efficiency of hydrophobic particles and air bubbles. Thousands of research papers and books have been published on the chemical theory behind sulfide mineral collectors, e.g., Fuerstenau (1962), Fuerstenau (1976), Fuerstenau, et. al. (1985), King (1982), Leja (1982) and Moudgil and Somasundaran (1987), This article will only address and summarize some of the more practical aspects of collector usage. The industrial scale practice of froth flotation in sulfide mineral concentration has changed little since the 1950's. For example, of the approximately 80,000 metric tons of sulfide mineral collectors used commercially (1980) in the free world, almost 98% were known and manufactured in some form 25 years ago. A very interesting and informative history of collector development has been given by Crozier (1984). In addition, the industrial scale practice of froth flotation applied to sulfide ores has proceeded since the 1920's with often little direct (predictive) scientific explanation due to the extreme complexity of the flotation process. Empirical testing has been a mainstay of industrial flotation reagent development and use. Even today there is often strong disagreement between researchers as to the mechanisms of chemical flotation practices that have been performed successfully at an industrial scale for many years. As a result of the above environment which makes reagent cost/performance analysis difficult for new reagents, there is a strong tendency for the flotation operation to use, and reagent companies to supply, as cheap as possible raw materials and manufactured products that are quite general in application. In the last 20 years or so, there has been increasing technical effort to tailor make reagents for specific applications, but to date such work has had little commercial impact. It is clearly the hope of this author and others that this situation will change in future years as technology improves and pressure for improved flotation performance intensifies. This article is a condensation of collector usage trends quantified as part of a comprehensive industrially oriented applications program on froth flotation organized by Klimpel and coworkers (1979-1987) and as reported in various countries that participated in the program from 1978-1983. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is the most widely used and economic means of concentrating metal sulfide ores such as those containing copper, lead, zinc, nickel, molybdenum, and pyrite. Also recoverable are other metal species that are often associated with sulfide ores, such as cobalt, platinum, gold, silver, etc. Flotation of metal sulfide ores has been successfully practiced at the industrial scale for more than 50 years. It is the relative technical/economic ease of floating metal sulfide minerals that has been a major driving force behind the rapid expansion in the supply/demand of metals over this 50 year period. It is estimated that 1.6 billion tons of feed sulfide ores are processed each year in the free world based on the froth flotation process, Klimpel (1987) and the manufacture/use of associated chemical reagents is a major portion of the 1.5 billion dollars (U.S.) free world mining chemicals business, Klimpel (1988b). The use of froth flotation appears to be increasing partially due to the ever decreasing feed grades and liberation sizes of the feed minerals. Froth flotation has shown itself to be a flexible process that lends itself well to many solid/solid separations. Thus, with surprisingly little equipment modification, separations can involve very different particle sizes and densities, and relative weight ratios of materials to be separated. In addition, the flotation process is economic, especially when compared to size reduction, its associated precursor process. Flotation also lends itself to continuous operations with a variety of equipment configurations. Such operations exhibit an ability to vary feed rate of solid to the process by as much as 50% without a total collapse of separating efficiency. In addition, the widely used mechanical flotation cell is scalable from 2.8 to 57 or 85 m3 (100 to 2000 or 3000 cu ft) with surprising ease relative to other unit engineering operations over the same relative size increase. The separating medium used is water. Most of the chemicals required -- pH regulators, frothers, collectors, activators, and depressants -- are all relatively inexpensive and common. They are not usually used in large quantities. While there has been a tendency for the quality of metal sulfide ores in any one geographic location to deteriorate over time due to mining intensity, the overall global supply of sulfide minerals is still very ample. Thus, the physical supply side of sulfide ore concentrates has not been under strong technology improvement pressure with increasing metal demands. Part of this is due to the ability of capital to consistently move to new geographic sources having suitable-grade sulfide ores. In these moves, the actual froth flotation technology used (including collector chemicals) has had to change little. As an illustration of this trend, of the approximately 80,000 metric tons of thio collectors used commercially (1980) in the free world, almost 987 were known and manufactured in some form 25 years ago. This is clearly not typical of reagent development in other process-related industries. In addition, the industrial-scale practice of froth flotation applied to sulfide ores has proceeded since the 1920's with often little direct (predictive) scientific explanation due to the extreme complexity of the flotation process. Empirical testing has been a mainstay of industrial flotation reagent development and use. Even today there is often strong disagreement between researchers as to the mechanisms of chemical flotation practices that have been performed successfully on an industrial scale for many years. The Murray Basin is being heralded as the next major mineral sands province in Australia. Already exploration programs have delineated extensive commercial deposits and several companies are progressing with plans to produce zircon, rutile and ilmenite in the Basin. As these deposits are developed consideration will need to be given to several key issues of the Murray Darling Basin; the availability of fresh water and management of salinity in the area being two of them. In this paper ideas being developed in CSIRO that link the processing of mineral sands with the salinity problem in the Basin are presented. The proposal presented here is to process saline water to produce industrial minerals with large volume applications and to produce value-added products from the mineral sands in the Basin using reagents produced from the saline waters. Processes to produce titania pigment and zirconia consume chlorine, caustic soda, soda ash and hydrochloric acid, all derivatives of salt (sodium chloride). There may be a good economic incentive if these processing plants were located in the close vicinity of each other.
