It is a peculiar anomaly that while the world uses the term "rich as a gold mine" as the superlative figure of speech descriptive of wealth, the shares of gold mines are not as popular investments in America as certain of them should be. One of the most able of Manhattan's bankers is a director in an investment trust with a portfolio the value of which has gone the way of other such portfolios. Luckily a couple of years ago a few hundred shares of Homestake were purchased, and since then the trust has not only received therefrom satisfactory dividends but has benefitted from a large appreciation in their value. At each directors' meeting, however, the banker in question, Cato-like, suggests the sale of these shares, gold shares being, in his opinion, too speculative to be included in the portfolio of any trust. A short time ago the financial pages of one of our great metropolitan papers featured an article listing the corporations still paying dividends at the 1929 rate. Gold-mining shares were, the article stated, excluded, although in reality every gold mine on the New York Stock Exchange paid higher dividends in 1932 than in 1929. This 'Alice in Wonderland' treatment of the gold-mining shares is admittedly a bit confusing to those of us who believe that the shares of certain gold-mining companies have a rightful place in any well diversified portfolio. It should, however, here be recorded that whereas, fifty years ago, in America, gold-mining shares were considered by the public as instruments of nefarious gambling, now shares of the better gold mines are sought by astute investors. In England for well over a generation their value as sound investments has been widely recognized.

The Elkhorn mining district is located 35 kilometers southeast of Helena, Montana, on the southeast edge of the Boulder Batholith. Geologically the district consists of a folded sequence of Paleozoic limestones and shales which have been thermally metamorphosed and altered by monzonite to diorite intrusives related to the Cretaceous Boulder Batholith. For the most part, the skarns are associated with metasomatic: replacement of calc-silicate hornfels, diorite and marble by iron rich, dark green pyroxene, garnet, sulfides, the district contains excess of 30,000 Kg.

The solvent extraction for gold from alkaline cyanide solutions has been investigated using LIX 79 guanidine-based extractant. Different variables that could affect the extraction system were evaluated: equilibrium time, aqueous pH and extractant and modifier concentrations. The extraction isotherms of the aurocyanide complex with respect to other cyanoanions were compared and the following order of selectivity Au>Ag>Cu>Zn>>Fe was observed. From the pH isotherms it was found that aurocyanide can be extracted in alkaline media and a better separation with respect to other cyanoaniones was obtained in the range of 10.5 < pH < 11.2. Better selectivity was observed when using LIX 79 and tridecanol at 10% and 5% vol, respectively. Stripping gold from loaded organic was carried out at pH>12, using NaOH and NaCN solutions.

The Golden Mile ore deposit in Western Australia is one of the largest gold telluride deposits in the world. Approximately 20 per cent of the contained gold in the deposit is present as gold telluride minerals, the most prevalent being calaverite (AuTe2) and petzite (Ag3AuTe2). Telluride mineralogy in the Golden Mile orebody is fine grained and complex having formed due to hydrothermal deposition in the late paragenetic sequence. Nineteen tellurium bearing minerals have been identified including gold and silver as well as mercury, lead and nickel tellurides (Shackleton, Spry and Bateman, 2003). Extensive work has been completed on the flotation of gold, gold-silver alloys and gold ores however there is a lack of information detailing the difference between flotation of native gold and individual gold minerals (Dunne, 2016). Studies on the flotation behaviour of gold ores have focused primarily on the flotation of free gold and refractory sulfides (Teague, Van Deventer and Swaminathan, 1999).

PRICES paid for goods and services in paper currencies are undoubtedly determined by many interrelated factors, but among them none is more specific in pushing prices toward higher and higher levels than the vast increase in debts and monetary obligations of our own and practically all major governments. There is nothing unorthodox in the situation in which the gold miners find themselves today. With wages and the prices of all materials required in the production of gold at the high levels characteristic of a period of prosperity, phony or otherwise, and with shortages of both men and machinery to contend with as well, the spread between the returns in paper dollars that must be accepted for gold in the United States and the cost of producing it is rather painfully small for most producers. The ionization potentials of gaseous Group 11elements are similar, with Au(0) being 1.5 eV greater than the next highest member of the group, Cu(0). The ionization potentials are all very much greater than the alkali metals, making these ?coinage? elements rather unreactive to chemical oxidation. Ionization from the first oxidation state shows a different pattern, with Ag(I) being the most difficult of the Group 11 ions to lose an electron. Gold(I) is noble and only normally oxidized in the presence of strongly coordinating ligands such as thiols or cyanide. Gold(I) compounds are 2-, 3- and 4- coordinate, with 3-coordinate species generally showing visible photoluminescence under UV excitation. Dinuclear Au(I) compounds with strongly coordinating S or C ligands can be oxidized to form isolable metal-metal bonded Au(II) compounds which are often readily isolable. Many have been structurally characterized. T he ease with which electrons are lost from closed shell dinuclear sp ecies (with anti-bonding M-M interactions) increases when metalmetal bonded compounds are formed. T his observation was made by our group with oxidative-addition studies of dinuclear gold(I) ylide complexes. It was superbly demonstrated recently by Cotton?s group who reported the isolation and characterization of a dinuclear closed shell transition metal species which is more readily oxidized than cesium. Trinuclear Au(I) pyrazolates, TR(pz), carb eniates, TR(carb), and benzylimidazolates, TR(bz), are well known and undergo electron loss through oxidative addition forming Au(I,III) mixed valence species and ultimately trinuclear Au(III) species. Au(II) species are absent from isolation in these oxidations. These carbeniates and benzylimidazolates also are excellent bases for metals ions such as Tl(I) and Ag(I). The acidic, neutral trinuclear compound [Hg(C6F4)3]3 also interacts with these bases. We have also shown that the neutral organic pi acids C6F6 and TCNQ form stacked pi-acid pi-base products with the trinuclear Au(I) compounds. In this paper, the structure of the octafluoronaphthalene acid-base product will be described. It displays a feature not observed previously in that the product is photoluminescent with a bright yellow emission. The 3.5 ms lifetime is very long and reminiscent of the long lifetimes observed by Balch for the stacked methyl,methoxy Au(carb). The electrochemical oxidation of tetragold(I) clusters, [Au4(form)4] have been studied in 0.1 M Bu4NPF6/CH2Cl2 at Pt working electrode at different scan rates. Three waves are obtained at 0.75, 0.95, and 1.09 V vs Ag/AgCl at scan rate 500 mV/s. The potential of the three reversible waves is independent of the scan rate in the range 50 mV/s to 3 V/s. The current at the third wave is larger than those at the first two waves. These tetranuclear species app ear to be effec tive catalyst precursors for the oxidation in air of CO. Introduction. The electronic structural relationships of the coinage elements and the alkali metals are similar in the sense that each have a [closed shell]ns1 configuration, yet their ionization energies (Table) and chemistries are clearly vastly different. The Group 11coinage elements have an underlying nd10 level immediately below the ns1 level. Unlike the alkali elements, ionization leaves the filled d electron shell the next accessible for further ionization. The coinage elements are all relatively ?noble?, much less reactive to environm ental conditions than the alkali metals. With the coinage elements, oxidation becomes very much dependent upon the types of ligand s availab le to bo nd to the ionized state.

Ore deposits composed of enargite, tennantite, gold, and pyrite have been mined in volcanic rocks of Oligocene age (35 m.y.) at Recsk, Hungary. Vertical and horizontal zoning of the alunitic-argillic alteration and of the ore minerals led to the concept of an intrusive heat source at depth. Subse-quent drilling disclosed a series of ore deposits in a zoned pattern in and around a stock, separated by a barren gap of 1000 meters from the shallow ore. The ore system is in a intracaldera horst-graben structure, formed by collapse and intrusion in a microplate subduction. volcanic-arc tectonic environment.

THE gold, silver, copper alloys have been the subject of several fairly complete investigations by Jänecke, Sterner-Rainer1 and others, and indeed it would seem as if almost too much labor had been expended on them when one thinks of the numerous other ternary alloys calling for more light; however, the combinations of the three metals are actually so widely used in jewelry that they merit perhaps the work done on them. There are a few properties of importance and interest not treated by the authors mentioned which the writer investigated some little time ago, and therefore he has ventured to put on record the results of some of his tests made at that time. He has chosen, as being the two series of most importance to the jeweler, only the 14 and 18-kt. golds, so the subject is by no means so inclusive as that previously treated. As stated, this paper is merely a record of tests made in a practical manner on two useful series of alloys, and is not at all a critical study of their properties. 14-KARAT ALLOYS These alloys are important because they are the most generally used in 14-kt. jewelry; by changing the proportions of silver and copper there are obtained all shades of color from the green of the alloy containing gold and silver but no copper, to the red of the alloy containing gold and copper but no silver. Many 14-kt. gold alloys are made with the addition of zinc to the three metals mentioned here; the added metal does not appreciably alter the color of the alloy nor has it, in general, much effect on the working properties; it may, however, prove useful as part of the zinc added may act as a deoxidizer and render the alloy free of gas. It is not a necessary addition because with proper precautions all the 14-kt. gold alloys containing only silver and copper in addition to the gold can be made free of gas and capable of being cold rolled without cracking. Risk assessment of mining projects is a requirement in the mineral industries. In this process, many risk variables are timedependent, and the only available data are historical time series. Moreover, in the case of a multivariate scenario, conventional forecasting methods fail to capture conditional dependency across the variables, which is important when there is an underlying causal relationship that needs to be modeled for accurate project evaluation. Thus, we investigated the use of copulas to capture the conditional distribution of the factors involved in a mine risk assessment study. We employed a multivariate copula-based time-series approach to model several uncertain variables. The Autoregressive Fractionally Integrated Moving Average - Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (ARFIMA-GARCH) model was used for the conditional mean and copulas were used to model the error distribution, thus capturing the collective variation and dependence pattern across the variables. The method was implemented to model gold prices, copper prices, and the 10-year US Treasury bond yields and to determine the project’s net present value and probability of being economically feasible. The proposed approach can be used for cases where simulation of multivariate time-series is conducted.

Its capital is Pasto, a small city of 25,000 inhabitants; the principal towns are Túquerres, Cumbal, Ypiales, Barbacoas, and Tumaco. The port on the Pacific ocean is Tumaco, and traffic in the interior is carried partly on the Patia river (steam navigation to the fluvial port of Barbacoas), and afterwards overland over poor roads by human bearers or on mule-back.

New technology is a significant factor in the present upsurge in world, and Australian, gold extraction and production. The main technologies in current use for gold production are described, referring to overseas developments. Areas where existing techniques have shortcomings or new methods are needed are pinpointed and discussed. Much research work on gold metallurgy is under way round the world, and many new developments have potential. Many of the current research activities round the world are covering unusual and striking areas, with surprising results starting to come through. Some of the "blue sky" techniques reportedly under investigation are identified, together with consideration of when changes in technology are of value. The consequences of new technology for personnel involved in gold plant operations will be raised, including the new education now required.

(San Francisco Meeting, October, 1911.) A FEW years ago somebody connected with one of those self-constituted bodies of unofficial character, like a Chamber of Commerce, Board of Trade, or State Development Board, started a catch-phrase referring to California as " The Land of Sunshine, Fruit, and Flowers," and the railroad magazines and folders keep it steadily in use, working day and night. Yet it altogether ignores the substance which brought the State into the Union, which peopled it, and which made it famous through-out the world. You ladies and gentlemen who have come from what we here call "the East," have in your own States, no matter which one, sunshine, fruit, and flowers. But your Eastern States, having these things as we do, have not the gold that we do. Therefore, the old designation of "The Golden State," applied to California, should be revived, as being the most distinctive term. It is worthy of remembrance, too, that during the dark days of the civil war this State handed over $172,000,000 in yellow gold, and saved the credit of the nation. Gold-mining has been carried on in California since " The days of old, The days of gold, The days of 49," and it still continues. Since that historic year, and up to the end of 1910, the State has produced, in gold alone, $1,530,214,468. Since 1792 the entire United States production of gold has been $8,261,573,500, so that the single State of California has, in that period, produced within $201,144,564 of one-half of all the gold from Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and the Southern and scattering States. The gold-silver deposits of the northern Primorye region are located in the eastern part of the East Sikhote-Alin volcanic belt, where the belt overlaps the Kema island-arc terrain of the Aptian-Albian age. There have been four deposits and numerous mineralization points found in the NE-trending Kema metallogenic belt that is about 1000 km long and 100 km wide. The known mineralization is of epithermal type, controlled by faults, and concentrated in quartz, quartz-fluorite-adularia, and, less commonly, sulfide-quartz vein systems hosted by the Upper Cretaceous-Lower Tertiary volcanic rocks. The vein systems extend for hundreds meters along strike, varying from tens centimeters to 50-60 meters in width. They are surrounded by wide zones of low-temperature hydrothermal alteration containing some gold-silver mineralization for which the commercial value was not studied during the early exploration. The ore bodies contain from 1 to 50-80 ppm of Au and from 1 to 1000 ppm of Ag. Gold is native, associated with quartz, and represented by particles from tens of microns to 1 mm in size. Silver occurs in native form as a constituent of argentite, pyrargyrite, stephanite, and other sulfosalts. The test work carried out for three vein systems 20 years ago showed that gold might be easily and almost completely recovered from the ore by cyanide treatment. The paper describes the geology and mineralogy of the deposits, Salut and Primorskoye, that are the most studied properties of the Kema belt. It also presents the data available on disseminated gold-silver mineralization in stockworks, altered explosive breccias, and wide zones of low-temperature hydrothermal alteration. This mineralization should be explored for possible exploitation as large open-pit, heap-leach deposits.

Cononish is a steep, narrow NE-SW trending vein system that was emplaced into late Proterozoic metasediments. It shows brittle style deformation and postdates metamorphism and associated Caledonian foliations. The ore shoots plunge 45¦SW, have a 40 to 80?m intersection with the existing underground development and extend between 40 and 260?m down plunge. Small-scale sulfide-bearing domains within the vein carry the highest gold grades. They collectively define the ore shoots, where one or two and rarely three of the domains are present at an individual site in the vein. Gold occurs as electrum, with minor native gold. Silver occurs additionally as tellurides and native metal. The gold/electrum is fine-grained, generally &lt;100?¦m in size and locally clusters. Visible gold up to 2000?¦m in size is rare. Gold and silver are generally spatially associated with sulfides in quartz. The main sulfide is pyrite, but galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite occur also. Electrum and gold occur with galena in pyrite-hosted fractures. Gold is also associated with the contacts between galena and pyrite grains. Discontinuity of individual domains, variation in domain thickness and internal heterogeneity results in short scale variation in grade across the structure. Over 16?km of diamond drilling and a 1.2?km exploration adit has provided data to support a Mineral Resource estimate of 169?000?oz Au and 631?000?oz Ag reported in accordance with the 2004 JORC Code.CITATION:Dominy, S C, Platten, I M, Xie, Y and Sangster, C J S, 2013. Gold catalysts based on different supports, titania, zirconia, ceria and mesoporous titania and zirconia, nonpromoted and promoted by vanadia in the reaction of complete benzene oxidation have been studied. XRD, HRTEM, TPR, Raman and ESR spectroscopy were applied for the characterization of the catalysts. The influence of gold on the reduction behavior, state and structure of vanadia on the surface was studied, as well as the role of supports nature on the properties and catalytic activity. A strong synergistic effect between gold and vanadia was observed for the all studied catalysts with an exception of the catalysts supported on mesoporous zirconia. In the last case the catalysts containing gold and gold-vanadia exhibit high and equal catalytic activity. The catalysts on ceria show highest and stable catalytic activity in the studied reaction among the all studied catalysts.

GOLD is a large subject. One could talk about its geological or mineralogical occurrences, prospect- i11.g for it, mining of .it, its metallurgy or its marketing; but I have decided to limit my discussion to gold as a business-that is, to its production and marketing. In the production of gold, it is necessary to consider the many possible sources, the quantities available, the capital and operating costs and the chances of price-breaking competition. So in the following remarks I shall endeavour to point out that though gold is found in every formation constituting the earth&apos;s crust, though it is possible to-find it free in great concentrated placer deposits on the surface, though there are still large unprospected areas of both the surface and the crust, though it may be possible to produce it by the cheapest labor on earth, and by processes not as yet developed, it still has an unlimited market at a definite price. There is no reasonable fear of disturbance by the finding of bountiful deposits, or by cheapening the cost of production due to devaluation, or by the development of any easy processes for direct, or for by product, production.

THE gold mining industry, in Canada as in other countries, has passed through trying times in the past year. The strains and stresses of war have drawn away much of its man-power, both from the labour and the management. The urgent needs of the war machine have greatly curtailed the amounts of steel and explosives that can be allotted to the mines; and the loss, by enemy action, of supplies of such essential things as rubber, bids fair to reduce operations still further, if not cripple them entirely in time. And, as if these difficulties were not enough, war on the psychological front has been declared on the gold mines. Earnest supporters of the war effort, well-meaning theorists, and perhaps others whose intent is less disinterested, have all combined to clamour against the continuance of gold mining. We have been asked, what is the use of taking gold out of one hole in Canada to put it into another in Kentucky. We have been assured that gold will never again have any value, except for filling teeth. We have been repeatedly adjured to look at Germany, how well it has got along without gold. We have been told that it is unthinkable, when this nation is girding her loins for war, that labour and materials should be diverted to this useless effort. Gold miners should be diverted to the base-metal mines, where they can produce something of real value to the war effort; or to war factories; or, in fact, almost anywhere, so long as they are got out of the gold mines. And, what has made the situation even more disturbing, it has seemed as if all this clamour might be convincing governments. In fact, as you all know, the government of the United States did actually take the step of ordering its gold mines to cease operations. Fortunately, however, for Canada, the facts that no large favourable effects resulted from that action, and that, in Canada, gold mining is a much larger part of the national economy than in the United States, have caused our government, so far at least, to avoid this drastic step. In talking about this, however, let me emphasize that I have no more inside information on the subject than any of you. Like Will Rogers, all I know is what I see in the papers.

"Goldcorp – Eleonore’s 7 000 tonnes per day gold mill was started up in October 2014 and achieved commercial production in April 2015. During the first year, operation has faced challenges from grinding, flotation, sulfide cyanidation and tailing filtration to achieve targeted throughput, availability and recovery.The optimization of non-sulfide tails filter cloth lifetime and filter press availability had the most significant impact on ramp-up of both mill throughput and availability. A change in steel ball addition size to the grinding circuit was made to meet the targeted p80 of 65 µm. Various optimization efforts were conducted on the flotation circuit, intended to recover all sulfide-bearing minerals. The goal is to attain the environmental target of 0.12% sulfur in flotation tails (to eliminate acid mine drainage or AMD), while an average of 0.31% sulfur was obtained over the first months of 2015. Collectors, frothers, activators and hydrodynamic parameters were tested to improve the circuit desulfurization efficiency. High sulfide reactivity in pre-oxidation and cyanidation severely impacted dissolved oxygen levels and cyanide consumption. Studies were undertaken to understand the effects of mineralogy, grind size and leach conditions on gold dissolution kinetics and cyanide consumption. Efforts were focused on pre-oxidation to restore dissolved oxygen levels as well as optimizing both lead nitrate addition and pre-oxidation time.INTRODUCTIONGoldcorp Eleonore’s mill commissioning started in September 2014. It was considered to operate the mill at 3 500 tpd during design, as the mine was planning to operate at this throughput for the first year.
