"INTRODUCTION Respirable dust is defined as the dust which penetrates to the alveolated regions of the lungs. Due to the size selective nature of the particle removal mechanisms in the nasal passages and lung airways, criteria defining respirable particles must be a function of the particle size. Three criteria defining respirable particle penetration are shown in Figure 1. These criteria have been defined by the British Medical Research Council (BMRC), the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and German TBF 50-11 (1).The quantity of respirable particles in an aerosol can be measured by use of two-stage samplers. The first stage consists of a particle preclassifier with penetration characteristics corresponding to one of the respirable penetration curves in Figure 1. The large nonrespirable dust particles are removed from the airstream in the preclassifier and the smaller respirable dust particles pass on to some device which can measure their concentration (the respirable dust concentration).Instrumentation for the measurement of respirable coal mine dust has been limited by the severe conditions existing within the coal mine. The conditions of particular importance are the methane atmosphere, high humidity, and the general non-laboratory type environment. The most severe of these conditions is the methane atmosphere since any electronic or electric powered instrumentation must be intrinsically safe to operate in such an atmosphere.In spite of the difficulty of sampling respirable dust within the mines, many instruments have been developed for in mine use. Although these instruments operate under a variety of principles they generally fall within two categories: personal samplers and area samplers.A personal sampler is worn by the mines while he is performing his duties in the mine. These devices are generally small, light weight and require little power so as not to interfere with the miner's ability to work."

The setting of tasks for the process control of coal cleaning, and in this connection the requirements for instrumentation can be classified into the following three fields: - Monitoring the operation of individual units, or process steps, - Control of units or process steps, - Control of the entire coal cleaning process with the intention of optimizing the operation and the profitability of the process. Instrumentation is affected by the type of cleaning processes. For introduction Figure 1 shows the simplified flow sheet of coal preparation which is usual in the German Ruhr District and in which desirable places for the measurement of ash, moisture and sulfur content are marked. The preparation plant is supplied with run-of-mine coal from the shaft via a homogenization facility. In a first step of primary classifying the raw feed coal is screened at about 10 mm. The raw coarse coal ( = 10 mm) is sorted by jig washers or heavy-medium separators. the raw fine coal (< 10 mm) at first is pneumatically sized at about 0.5 to 0.75 mm. The fines, the aspirated dust, are a finished partial product which will be added to the final metallurgical or steam coal. The material 10 to 0.75 mm subsequently is sorted in fine coal jigs and dewatered in centrifuges. The sludge obtained with the wet cleaning processes is dewatered in thickeners and fed to the flotation. Concentrate and tailings are dewatered by filters or bowl centrifuges and by chamber filter presses or belt filter presses, respectively. The partial products coarse coal, fine coal, flotation concentrate, aspirated dust, and middlings are blended to result in the sellable products metallurgical and steam coal.

INSTRUMENTATION in the process industries can no longer be regarded as a convenience, but rather an absolute necessity. Although many chemical processes must already be conducted with instruments, every properly designed application of automatic process control will improve operation: 1) the product will be more uniform and of higher quality; 2) the manual labor saved will reduce cost; 3) uniformity of flow and uniform control of process will increase production; and 4) surges will be eliminated, making it possible to operate equipment near ultimate capacity at all times. Industrial instruments fall into two general classifications-those that measure and those that measure and control. The cement industry has been using instruments for a number of years, particularly in the burning process, primarily for indicating and recording. Automatic process control makes additional use of these instruments, and others, to control variables. Assisted by the instrument manufacturers, engineers at Ideal Cement CO. achieved considerable progress in determining how well the usual recording instruments could be made to control various phases of cement-making. The results of these experiments were used to make the new plant at Houston as wholly automatic as possible.

It is believed that many of the problems encountered in the operation of gold cyanidation plants are difficult to resolve due to the lack of sufficient and reliable in-formation regarding the variations and actual values of operating variables at any given time. The application of instruments to monitor the more important variables in the cyanidation process should result in more efficient plant operation and a better understanding of the process. The use of pH and conductivity sensing devices for alkalinity measurements, a monitor to determine the dissolved oxygen content of plant solutions, a continuous cyanide titrator and sonic control of grinding circuits are discussed. Although the discussion is oriented toward the cyanide process, much of the paper is applicable to other ore treatment operations.

Void detection and identification of bed separation while drilling holes in rocks for roof bolting can be a great source of information for the evaluation of ground conditions and adjustment of ground control or support measures. This can be accomplished through the monitoring and analysis of drilling parameters by the roof bolter. This paper reviews work currently under way in a joint study between Penn State University and J. H. Fletcher & Co. The detection of voids, along with identification of rock types, can lead to development of 3D roof maps, which can subsequently be used to evaluate ground support and its suitability for given ground conditions in tunneling and mining operations. Existing algorithms for void detection utilize the sensory information of the drill unit, such as feed and rotary pressure, revolutions per minute (RPM), and penetration rate, to detect voids or joints on the roof/ ribs. While the void detection algorithms are being revised to allow analysis of available data from the existing sensory systems of the roofbolters with higher accuracy and lower number of false detections, additional sensors have been added to the drill to improve its ability for accurate detection of the voids and joints. This includes installation of vibration and acoustic sensors on a drilling unit at J. H. Fletcher & Co., and pertinent data analysis which are discussed in this paper. Initial results indicate that the data obtained by vibration and acoustic sensors at high sampling rates can be used to improve the performance of the void detection algorithms independently, and when combined with the modified algorithms using existing sensors, it can substantially improve the capabilities of current void detection system.

The first part of the project was a literature study and a survey including an evaluation of the answers provided by members of EFEE. The results were presented at the International Society of Explosives Engineers (ISEE) conference in Denver 2020 as well as the EFEE conference in Helsinki in 2019.

While flue gas scrubbing with alkaline solutions is one of the oldest methods of removing SO2 from flue gas, a satisfactory scrubbing system for this application, which is both technically and economically viable, has yet to be developed. Interest in alkaline scrubbing has continued because of its basic simplicity and comparatively low capital cost. Drawbacks of alkaline scrubbing are the tendency for accumulation of solids to plug the system, scaling, corrosion and erosion problems and the need to dispose of large quantities of waste. Discussed are instrumentation loop applications to a 90,000 cfm alkali scrubbing test facility, the process problems the instrumentation engineer faces in. selection of equipment, the performance of the instruments selected and the problems encountered during start-up. The Test Facility incorporates centralized electronic process control with a digital data acquisition system provided to log process variables and print off normal (alarm) conditions. Flue gas SO2 content is measured by ultra-violet analyzers and analysis of the total gas stream is by gas chromatographs.

HydraboltTM is a Swellex-type dowel support element developed and manufactured by New Concept Mining in South Africa. Like Swellex, the HydraboltTM is a folded tube which can be inserted into a larger diameter hole without pushing. It is then activated by injection of high pressure water which inflates the folded tube to intimate contact with the walls of the borehole at a set pressure, normally 25 MPa. Unlike Swellex however, the set water pressure at the end of the inflation is maintained throughout the life of the dowel. An integral non-return valve makes this possible. The HydraboltTM is being investigated as a possible stress change measuring cell. This paper presents the results of closed form solutions, numerical modeling and laboratory test to date. Preliminary results indicate that the HydraboltTM can be used as a stress change monitoring cell in addition to its conventional role as a rock mass reinforcing element. If successful, the HydraboltTM will supplement microseismic monitoring systems in rockburst-prone ground conditions where they will give quantitative stress change data for both mine design model calibrations and means for proactive safety measures.

INTRODUCTION The resurgence of coal mining activity in the United States, brought on by the spiraling costs of fossil fw1 energy in the Seventies, has come at a time of intense public concern for the quality of the environment. Notwithstanding pressure on our economy to develop alternate sources of fue1 energy to the import of oil, the legislatures of several states have reacted to public concern over the environment by passing strict regulations aimed at con- trolling the subsidence effect s of underground mining. Agencies of the federal government charged with assistance to the mining industry, including the Department of Energy and the Bureau of Mines, have sponsored a number of instrumentation and field measurement projects aimed at the development of subsidence prediction models that can aid the mine operator&apos;s task of subsidence control. There are good empirical models developed in Europe for subsidence prediction, but they were made possible by a large body of mining-induced subsidence data collected there over a long period of time. No com- parable subsidence data base exists in the United States, and consequently empirical modeling of subsidence is not a realistic approach for our near term needs. Moreover, the geologic and topographic diversity of the several coal regions in the United States is expected to necessitate the development of several empirical models, each one expected to be relevant to its own region. Because of the time and costs that are likely to be involved in an empirical modeling approach, it is considered more expedient and cost effective to develop a general, mechanistic model for subsidence prediction purposes. In order to develop such a model, it is necessary to investigate and quantify the mechanics of the subsidence process from the mine level up to the ground surface. The series of projects discussed in this paper are designed to achieve this objective and include the following work: (1) the identification of geotechnical instrumentation that will pro- vide mine level overburden and surface subsidence data. (2) a field demonstration of selected instruments, and (3) documentation of case histories for complete subsidence mechanics, using the demonstrated and preferred instruments. An identification of feasible instrumentation and monitoring techniques was completed by Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC) in 1977 (O&apos;Rourke and others). This paper discusses a demonstration of those instruments at a mine in Utah, and at two subsequent projects, currently underway at longwall mines in Colorado and West Virginia. &apos;he latter two projects when complete will provide documented case histories of subsidence mechanics. The process of optimizing subsidence instrumentation and monitoring techniques to the conditions encountered during installation and monitoring for these underground mines is shown to be an evolving one, and one which has had some notable successes to date. INITIAL DEMONSTRATION The initial design and demonstration of selected monitoring systems was carried out at the SUFCO No. 1 mine, near Salina, Utah. The instrumented panel was approximately 152 m wide. 640 m long. and was 290 m to 320 m deep. The mined height of coal. seam averaged 2.4 m. The mining method was room and pillar using continuous mining machines. This method allowed some monitoring of the supported condition during development, and eventually allowed monitoring of a caved system when both chain pillars and room pillars were extracted on retreat. The two instrument systems shown on Table 1 were selected from the earlier feasibility report for demonstration at SUFCO No. 1. Collectively, the two systems, one for a fully-supported mining method and the other for a fully-caved method, incorporate most of the instrumentation to be found within all five systems listed in the earlier feasibility report. The instrumentation includes surface, subsurface and mine monitoring installations. All of the SUFCO instruments selected to meet the specifications of the general instrument types listed on Table 1 were manually operated. That is, data from the installed system could only be obtained while a person was there to physically observe or operate the system readout. Automatic data recording equipment was available for some installations, but the objectives were to keep the systems as simple as possible for the demonstration project. A complete description of the surface, sub- surface and mine level instruments, and the demonstration project results are given in WCC (1982), and selected features are discussed in this paper.

INTRODUCTION What is automation? Why automate? Webster&apos;s New Collegiate Dictionary defines automation as "the automatically controlled operation of an apparatus, process, or system by mechanical or electronic devices that take the place of human organs of observation, effort, and decision." This definition gives an implied answer to the second question, "Why automate?" Automation, automatic control devices, and process control equipment receive their justification in supplementing or replacing manpower, which results in decreased operating costs. In the past, processes were operated with the minimum amount of instruments needed merely to guide operators. Processes were manually con- trolled by the operator on the basis of simple temperature, pressure, flow, and level indications on a panel. Today the tendency is to design a new plant to operate in a fully automatic manner according to a preset pro- gram utilizing a minimum of manpower. In addition to this direct cost reduction in manual labor, increased equipment capacity results from uniformity of flow and uniform control of process variables. This control eliminates or minimizes surges and permits equipment to be operated at or near its ultimate capacity and, for a given material throughput, permits the use of smaller process equipment. Automatic control, therefore, be it in the field of coal processing or in any industrial field, is simply a problem of economics. Control equipment is justified in terms of its contribution toward increasing productivity, increasing profit margins, or producing a new and salable product at a profit. Instruments and control devices can be divided into two general groups: (1) units which measure and (2) units which both measure and control a process variable.

A cover of inert material overlain by topsoil is required over compacted, seawater-neutralised red mud, a waste product from the refining of bauxite to produce alumina. The cover is to be revegetated, and it is necessary to demonstrate that the potential evapotranspirative-driven uptake of salts from the seawater-neutralised red mud will not impact the revegetation. An instrumented column was designed and constructed to test the evaporation-driven uptake of salts from compacted red mud into an overlying cover material with a thickness limited to 600 mm. The PVC column is 1.2 m high, with a 200 mm internal diameter. The column is instrumented with up to ten of each of moisture, suction, salinity and temperature sensors, together with a data logger, designed and manufactured at The University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane, Australia. The sensors were installed through the wall of the column at various depth intervals, with each set of sensors located at quarter points around the circumference of the column. Two pressure transducers were installed in the column to monitor the change of water level due to rainfall and evaporation. The column was filled with compacted red mud to a depth of 600 mm overlain by 600 mm of cover material, both sourced from the Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) site in Gladstone, Queensland, Australia. The column is installed on a building roof at UQ, alongside a weather station, and will be subjected to the prevailing weather conditions for up to 1 year in the first instance, during which time the weather conditions and sensor responses will be continuously monitored. Instrumented handles or dynamometers are widely used to measure hand forces and/or the biodynamic response of hand-arm system. To study hand-transmitted vibration exposure, six generations of instrument handles were constructed or initially developed by researchers in ECTB/HELD/NIOSH. This presentation provided a summary of these handles. Their basic characteristics, limitations, and usefulness are described, which may help their appropriate applications and further improvements. Six Designs of Instrumented Handles Handle 1: The conceptual design is recommended in ISO 10819 (1996)1 for glove test. The grip force is measured by detecting bending strains on a measuring beam in the handle. A special handle fixture was designed to connect the handle to a shaker. Except the screws, the handle and fixture were made from aluminum. Handle 2: The design is based on the principle of shear strain measurement.2-3 Both grip and push forces can be measured simultaneously using this handle. This handle was directly designed for a simulated vibrating tool. Handle 3: This design is basically composed of a handle base, a measuring cap, and two charge-based sensors (Kistler 9212) sandwiched between the base and cap. The handle was also made from aluminum. The fixture for Handle 1 was also used with this handle. This generation of handle has three different handle diameters (30, 40, and 50mm).4 Handle 4: This design is an improvement from Handle 3. The handle fixture was totally redesigned and it was much stiffer than the previous one. The aluminum measuring cap was replaced with a magnesium cap. Handle 5: The basic structure of this handle is the same as that for Handle 3. However, the piezoelectric sensors were replaced with two strain gage based sensors (Interface SML-50). Handle 6: This handle includes two measuring caps, four piezoelectric sensors, and a handle centre base. The handle fixture was the same as that with Handle 4. Methods for Handle Examinations The static and dynamic characterizations were performed using the methods reported by Dong et al.5-6 Results and Discussion Handle 1: The static force measurement depended on the hand grip location on the handle. Its natural frequency was less than 200 Hz.5,6 Because the transmissibility of gloves may not vary significantly with the applied grip force, this handle may be acceptable for glove test. However, the force measurements with this handle may not be reliable. Handle 2: The static force measured with this handle was insensitive to the hand acting location. However, when the handle was vibrating, the force signals could be totally distorted. For this reason, it was not used for vibration studies.

"A hybrid shoring system consisting of cast-in-place soldier piles with Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) infill panels was constructed for temporary support of a 19.8 m (65 ft) deep excavation in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Deep Mixing (DM) was completed up to 9.7 m (32 ft) in fill, peat, wood waste and clayey silt with embedment in dense till, and soldier piles constructed through the dense till extending to below final excavation level. Two trial CSM panels were installed ahead of production to assist with developing the termination criteria of the CSM panels in the dense till. The constructed depth of the CSM panels was based on interpretation of real-time monitoring data obtained through the Bauer B-tronic system. Inclinometer monitoring data from two CSM panels and two soldier piles, as well as soldier pile survey target data was used to assess and monitor the performance of the hybrid shoring system throughout bulk excavation. The objectives of this paper are to provide an overview of the design and construction aspects of the hybrid DM shoring system and to present inclinometer and pile target data to demonstrate the lateral performance of the CSM infill panels and soldier piles. This paper also discusses the merits of using real-time monitoring data as part of the engineering decision-making process for validating CSM panel construction. BACKGROUND A hybrid DM shoring design was recently completed for a high-rise development in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia for temporary support of a five level basement excavation. Deep mixing was proposed by the excavation and shoring design-build team as the preferred method to construct infill panels between soldier piles because of the speed at which the shoring system could be constructed in variable fill, peat, wood waste and overburden compared with traditional secant piling methods. The development site is generally a truncated triangle in plan, with the longest side of the triangle being approximately 115.7 m (380 ft) long and the two shorter sides being approximately 71.6 m (235 ft) (Hybrid Shoring Wall 1) to 75.0 m (246 ft) (Hybrid Shoring Wall 2) long. The site is bounded by an existing bridge off-ramp structure along its longest side, and by city streets on the other two sides, as shown in Figure 1. The truncated section is approximately 16.8 m (55 ft) (Hybrid Shoring Wall 3) long. Due to project constraints, the hybrid DM and soldier pile shoring system was only proposed for the two shorter sides of the triangle and the truncated section. Traditional secant piles were installed for the longest side. This paper focusses on the hybrid shoring system. A typical detail showing the CSM infill panel with the soldier piles is presented in Figure 2."

One of the basic requirements for designing an optimized rock support for an underground opening is having reasonably enough geological information. It is often financially impractical to obtain detailed geological information about the rock surrounding the excavations. The geological and geotechnical information which are obtained during the construction phase are also usually inadequate and need periodic operation stoppage. Penn State University- J.H. Fletcher & Co. joint venture is to improve the existing instrumented roofbolter so that the 3D geological and geotechnical map of the rock mass surrounding the underground working can be generated real-time as the data is being collected. This information will also be used to design appropriate support for different sections of mines. In this paper, recent results in improving the performance of the measurement while drilling system will be discussed. Moreover, updates related to borehole probing methods for estimating the properties of the rock masses will be presented.

It has been previously documented that various weather conditions such as wind direction and speed, cloud cover and, especially, temperature inversions can significantly affect the overpressure generated by a blast event (Siskind et al, 1980; Oriard, 1999; Siskind, 2000). The overpressure can be magnified downwind and reduced upwind; a change in the regular profile of temperature with elevation can magnify or focus the sound intensity at some distance from the blast event.

In the United States, the occurrence of underground mine fires/explosions continue to decrease; however, they pose great danger to the miners and any subsequent mine rescue teams and/or fire brigades. Tragically, 19 coal miners lost their lives in 2006 at fires or explosions. Fires/explosions can devastate a mine and cause its permanent closure. It is vitally important to obtain accurate information on the gas content (concentration and composition) of the mine atmosphere after the event so that appropriate action can be instituted to rescue any trapped miners while not exposing the mine rescue teams to unnecessary hazards. Additionally, the fire fighting techniques (spraying water, sealing, etc.) will be dictated by the gas content. Finally, the gas content will determine when it is safe to recover the mine. The gas content of the air can be determined using detector tubes, handheld instruments, portable instruments, or gas chromatographs. No single instrument is suitable for all analyses. Each type of instrument has its advantages and disadvantages. This paper discusses these attributes.

WHAT are known as insulating firebrick are lightweight firebrick with low thermal conductivity designed primarily for use in direct contact with furnace gases. These are a recent development in the refractories industry, and are really an outgrowth of the type of insulating brick suitable for use behind refractory walls developed by the insulation manufacturers. To differentiate between these two types of brick, the manufacturers have recently agreed upon the use of the term "Insulating Firebrick" to apply to the type of brick suited for use in direct contact with furnace gases, and the term "Insulating Brick" for the type suitable for use behind refractory walls. Insulation was applied to steam pipes as far back as 1900. This was a low-temperature insulation, the most common type being magnesia blocks. The next development was applying insulation to the outside of furnace walls, a service which necessitated an insulating material of higher temperature resistance. Natural diatomaceous earth, both in the powdered and brick form, was used; this was efficient and is still used extensively for backing up refractory walls where the inner surface temperature of the insulation does not exceed 1600° F.

Design of furnace containment systems can be based on one of two design philosophies: Insulating or conductive lining designs. In insulating lining designs, management of the compatibility between refractory materials and process materials (typically liquid metal and/or slag) is an important criterion for furnace design, and an important process parameter to control during furnace operation. In conductive lining designs, management of the integrity of the layer of frozen material (freeze lining) on the interface between the liquid process material, and the refractory lining, is important. For example in ferrochromium production, both lining design philosophies are applied. The work presented here discusses the significance of lining design philosophy in the context of ferrochromium production.

As used in connection with open-hearth or other high-temperature operations, "insulation" refers to a multitude of substances, natural or manufactured, that have the one principal property of preventing the flow of heat by conduction to a greater degree than refractories can prevent it, the principal properties of the latter being resistance to temperature and/or chemical action. The term "control" as commonly applied to the mechanization of management functions is inappropriate without qualification, for without some degree of control of every operation we could produce no steel worthy of the name. Although grouped together in this paper, insulation and control in open-hearth furnaces have little, if any, interrelationship, therefore the paper is made up of two distinct parts. INSULATION OF OPEN-HEARTH FURNACES More than ten years ago the writer proposed the insulation of an acid open-hearth furnace system below the charging floor, and it was accomplished, with gratifying results. Possibly that was the first time the insulation of regenerators and slag pockets of any open-hearth furnace was undertaken, but shortly thereafter such insulation became general, and when the six groups of 15D-ton furnaces&apos; were built in 1929-1930, they were completely insulated below the charging floor. While the practice was accepted at least five years ago, it was not well understood, however, as indicated by the following incident which occurred in connection with an installation made in 1929. The availability and reliability of large grinding mills and their Gearless Mill Drives (GMDs) are of paramount importance for the grinding process. Although GMDs have been in service for decades, and are known for their operational efficiency (reliability and robustness with reduced operating cost per ton), compared to conventional drives, in the last decade due to certain reasons some failures led to serious unscheduled shutdowns and significant insurance events. The majority of these notable "insured" failures have happened on GMDs installed on relatively large mills, as the financial impact of a failure is proportional to the through-put of the mill. Despite the occurrences of these events, as mining operations are driven by lower ore grades and the ability to continue reducing operating costs per ton, the trend for having larger mills is still very present and there is no reason why this trend should not continue. It is obvious that if not handled correctly, the possibility of large value GMD loss events, coupled with the continuing increase in mill size or required availability and reliability targets, could potentially lead to major conflicts as it becomes difficult for the insurance companies to judge the risk and hence may result in hesitation to insure these grinding circuits. This paper will not only describe the conflicting situation from both an insurer&apos;s perspective and from an equipment supplier&apos;s perspective, but also how these conflicting challenges can be successfully mastered. It has to be noted that not only the mining companies themselves, but also their insurance companies and the involved equipment suppliers have a common interest: to reach the highest availability and reliability in order to avoid or at least minimize unscheduled shut down times, and most importantly prevent unplanned events that result in extended production stoppages or reductions in through-put of GMD driven mills. From the very beginning onwards, the complete service concept together with emergency plans must be integrated on every level in the design of the grinding circuit. This approach must be implemented continuously and without compromises by all involved parties during all following stages, such as basic design, detail design, manufacturing, quality inspection and testing, packing, transportation, storage, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance. The concept of formal risk analysis related to mill operations, maintenance and spare parts strategies must be an integral part of mining companies? decisions related to the selection for installation and continued use of large mills powered by GMDs. The service concept in place for operating mills shall also have a clear focus on very early detection of any abnormalities, so that the risk can be mitigated and unscheduled shutdown times avoided. However, if a major failure occurs, then procedures and tools shall already be available in order to ensure that production impact is minimized.
