"This is a reprise of the paper ‘Back to the Future – Why Change Doesn’t Necessarily Mean Progress’ presented to the Tenth Mill Operators’ Conference in 2009. It was observed that the ‘boom and bust’ cycles of the industry, together with trends in tertiary education and the effects of fly-in fly-out (FIFO) operations raised serious questions about the sustainability of human capital in the mineral processing sector.In 2016 we find ourselves in a ‘bust’ after enjoying a decade of the longest commodity price ‘boom’ in a century. In the ‘boom’ did we:make any technological breakthroughs?put measures in place to improve our human capital, especially in the area of ‘professional formation’?The paper makes observations on the current performance of mineral processing engineers and the organisational milieu in which they operate. It questions whether mineral processing engineers are actually ‘adding value’ at some sites given their organisational and operational practices.Some technical trends are examined and what it might mean for mineral processing engineers.Given the above and demographic trends for mineral industry professionals, changes to the seemingly current laissez-faire model of professional development are proposed.Citation:Munro, P D, 2016. "The industry that supports operations and new projects is suffering a rapid decline in the currently severely curtailed capital investment environment. This is evidenced by a decline in the number of skilled teams, who are now centred in fewer locations. Other features are an aging and retiring ‘Baby Boomer’ generation, coupled with a low uptake of new graduates and the uncertainty in predicting future capital expenditure programs and requirements. Combine this with a reluctance of cash-poor operations to modernise and adapt in an environment of low metal prices, and there is a real uncertainty in how service providers will meet industry needs as they evolve.The industry that supports operations and new projects is suffering a rapid decline in the currently severely curtailed capital investment environment. Other features are an aging and retiring ‘Baby Boomer’ generation, coupled with a low uptake of new graduates and the uncertainty in predicting future capital expenditure programs and requirements. Combine this with a reluctance of cash-poor operations to modernise and adapt in an environment of low metal prices, and there is a real uncertainty in how service providers will meet industry needs as they evolve.Trends amongst service providers will be put forward as well as developing options and alternatives. These embrace a whole gamut of agile alternatives in the areas of partnering, alliances, commercial and shared risk models and mutual innovations. These will be discussed with some case studies and suggested approaches.Particular emphasis will be upon brownfield expansions and upgrades which have emerged recently as a preferred lower capital and focused way to achieve best practical outcome at lowest cost. There are a number of specific features of such brownfields projects including the requirement for very close cooperation between the execution team, operators, maintenance and suppliers and a maximum usage of site resources and ingenuity. Often, required investment hurdle rates are high, downtime allowed is minimal and site resources usage is maximised. This requires mutual trust, good planning and high health, safety, environment and community (HSEC) standards and practice. In many ways the practices and skills needed are the exact opposite of the historical ‘big greenfields’ project with which the industry has been geared for more recently.Another developing area has been with innovative commercial models and practices. These have been as a direct result of the more challenging investment criteria being adopted and the relative hunger of service providers. It has become more common to look at these commercial/costing alternatives very early in the project cycle as an essential project tool and not just as a possible option. These commercial solutions cover such alternatives as leasing and rental, deferred payments, build–own–operate–transfer (BOOT) and build–own–operate (BOO), whole-of-mine preferred spares and maintenance terms, and aggressive performance targets with real assurance penalties. Once again this requires very close mutual dealings and trust, and sufficient time allocation compared to a conventional approach.Citation:Coleman, R, King, J and Hunter, T, 2016. "Continuous improvement on metallurgical treatment plants is possible only when good data and analysis of the data are available. Good data implies appropriate and accurate mass measurement coupled with good sampling practices and accurate chemical analysis especially when carrying out monthly metallurgical metal reconciliations. Adequate characterisation of key samples (eg tailings, feed, concentrates and others) at timely intervals is an important part of a good continuous improvement program. The data from this will help identify opportunities to improve operation performance and thus profitability. In mining and quarrying operations, electric motors can fail for a variety of reasons. Some failures are directly linked to demanding production requirements and contaminant-laden environments and, consequently, are difficult to prevent. A sizeable number, however, are caused by ?offline? factors that have nothing to do with production. These include inadequate or substandard motor repair practices and improper motor shipping, storage and installation. The fact that failures are at times attributable to repair- or rebuild-related errors and problems raises the stakes when selecting an electric motor repair provider. Teaming with high-quality electric motor shops can help a company reduce failures due to offline factors, improving motor reliability and cutting downtime costs. Regardless of location or annual revenues, the best motor shops have similar business cultures and share many of the same characteristics.

The instrumentation and monitoring of rock behaviour have played an important and necessary role in the practice of potash, rocksalt, gypsum, trona and coal mining. The art of rock instrumentation applied to soft rock and coal mining has progressively evolved over the past years and will surely continue to advance at a faster pace in the future as a result of the technological revolution we experience today. The development of sophisticated mine-wide data communications systems is being used for instrumentation and sensor automation, and laser, sonar and geophysics technology are being continuously adapted for rock monitoring purposes. In this paper, the author provides an overview of typical rock instrumentation used today and offers some views of the progressive evolution in rock mechanics instrumentation sophistication and design.

A flexible, efficient, and relatively low-cost drilling and blasting operation has evolved at Texasgulf Canada, Ltd.'s Kidd Creek underground mine. Located 32 km (20 miles) north of historic Timmins, Ontario, the underground operation utilizes a sublevel open stoping method developed with large-diameter blastholes. Over the years, Kidd Creek engineers have experimented with various drill-and-blast techniques, leading to the present-day practice. Continuing work is being conducted to further mechanize the blasting operation.

An early commitment by Kidd Creek Mines Ltd. (formerly Texasgulf Canada) to follow a stringent environmental control programme from the initial stages of design and development of its metallurgical facilities in Timmins, Ontario, has resulted in the on-going attainment of extremely low levels of industrial waste emissions. This paper outlines the monitoring programme initiated and maintained by the company's environmental control section. Comparative results of environmental sampling for the periods before and after the copper smelter start-up are highlighted.

"Accurate delineation of the contact between a kimberlite pipe and country rock at production level depths is a challenge due to limited geological data. Geological information is obtained from widely spaced diamond core boreholes which are drilled either from surface or from higher mining levels within the pipe. Kimberlite pipe/country rock contacts are notoriously irregular and variable, further reducing the confidence in contact positions defined by the drill-holes. At Finsch Diamond Mine (FDM), the opportunity arose to further improve the confidence in the contact positions relative to the planned slot (end) positions of each sublevel cave tunnel during the development stage of these tunnels. As a result, the accuracy of the 3D geological model has improved.The use of diamond drill core for this purpose is expensive due to site establishment requirements. The lengthy time taken during site establishment also delays the development of tunnels and support cycles, thereby extending the completion dates. FDM has reduced delays during development by adopting percussion drilling, in conjunction with gamma ray logging. The S36 drill rig is mounted on a moveable platform and does not require a costly and lengthy site establishment. The holes are generally drilled (0°/flat) on grade elevation, and these holes could also be drilled from the rim tunnels (developed in waste) into the kimberlite pipe. A single-boom production drill rig is normally used to drill holes about 20 m in length.On completion of the contact delineation drilling, gamma logging of the holes is conducted using the GeoVista geophysical sonde (or probe) to log the natural gamma signature of the dolomite/ kimberlite contact. The advantage of this tool is that the readings are continuous within centimetre intervals, and due to contrasting characteristics between kimberlite (rich in clay minerals) and dolomite, the contact position can be determined accurately. The better definition of contact positions also adds value to tunnel stopping distance in terms of developing the tunnel’s slot at the optimum distance from the contact (easier blasting of longhole rings, avoidance of contact overbreak and premature waste ingress, and other matters relating to extraction of ore from these tunnels). This method is highly successful and has reduced development costs (on-time completion), improved definition of the pipe’s contact position for geological modelling, improved blast design, and mitigated early waste ingress by maintaining the contact’s integrity."

The Buffalo Head Hills region is located approximately 350 kilometres northwest of the city of Edmonton in northcentral Alberta (Figure 1). The Alberta diamond joint venture consisting of Ashton Mining of Canada Inc., Alberta Energy Company Ltd and Pure Gold Minerals Inc. began exploring for kimberlites in the Buffalo Head Hills region in late 1996. At the time, the Mountain Lake diatreme, located 200 kilometres to the southwest, was the only reported kimberlitic rock in Alberta (Leckie et al., 1997, Figure 1). Exploration efforts since 1996 have successfully identified a new diamondiferous kimberlite province in Canada.

At the beginning of the 80-s the first diamond pipe in the East-European platform was discovered in the North of the Russian Federation on the White Sea Winter coast. During several years while studying this unique area data on kimberlites and country rocks petrophysical characteristics have been collected. Considerable experience in geophysical methods when searching and exploring diamonds was accumulated, and various methods of geophysical data interpretation were used. It has been established from the analysis of geophysical data that diamond-bearing kimberlites are located in the most ancient and the most stable block of the East-European craton.

"The kinematic analysis of rock blocks is one part of a block stability assessment. It provides information about a block’s movability, i.e. if a block can detach from the adjacent rock mass and move towards the free space. This paper introduces an analytical method for the analysis of pure rotations of arbitrary finite polyhedral blocks. It enables the engineer to judge a block’s rotatability about a corner or an edge. The method is presented using a graphical and computational method. The application of the method is illustrated with an example. INTRODUCTIONThe kinematic analysis of rock blocks deals with the determination of the movability of blocks. Established methods typically cover: (a) translational motion (John 1968, Markland 1972, Londe et al. 1969, 1970, Goodman & Shi 1985, Warburton 1981) and (b) the specific rotational cases Toppling (Goodman & Bray 1977) and Slumping (Kieffer 1998). Mauldon & Goodman (1990, 1996) and Tonon (1998) introduced rotational kinematic analyses for three-joint pyramids and tetrahedral blocks extending Goodman & Shi’s block theory.All mentioned methods are subject to assumptions that limit the applicability to engineering problems. For example, the kinematic test of daylighting joints or intersections inherently assumes a finite block, which only can be proved by the finiteness theorem (Goodman & Shi 1985). Daylighting of an intersection or plane is not a sufficient condition for removability. Goodman & Shi’s and Warburton’s methods are limited to translational block motion. The methods for block rotations so far address tetrahedral blocks only. They also address only pure rotational modes and neglect the general motion of a rigid body. This paper introduces an analytical method for the analysis of the kinematic rotatability of finite rock blocks. It extends Mauldon's and Tonon's theory of rotatability of tetrahedra to arbitrary polyhedral blocks. A graphical method using the stereographic projection and a computational method are presented."

The kinetics study of blast furnace dust (BFD) recycling with flash reduction process at high temperature has been carried out using a high temperature drop tube furnace in laboratory scale. A combination characterization methods of chemical titration and SEM-EDS were used to track the reduction kinetics. The experiments using CO and CO2 mixtures with range of CO/CO2 (1:0, 1:1) at different temperature (1623–1723 K) and at different reduction time (1560– 2340 ms) were conducted. It was found that the reduction degree increases with the increase of temperature and reduction time as well as CO concentration. The carbon contained in the original BFD has weak in fluence on the reduction potential in the form of gasification. The unreacted core model was adopted based on the observation of the cross section and the measurement of iron element content, the effective diffusion coef ficient and reaction rate constant were determined and the rate controlling step was also analyzed.

The investigation focuses on a low temperature recovery of Cu and Co from a 40 wt% SiO2-(30 wt%Fe,6 wt%Al)2O3-10wt% CaO-7wt%CuO-7wt%CoO slag over a temperature range of 1173K to 1323K. The alloy phases containing Cu-Co and Fe-Co alloy formed via the carbothermic reduction of oxides: MO + C = M + CO(g), where M represents metallic copper, cobalt or iron. In the direct reduction of oxides, the recovery of metallic phase was well below 90% at 1323K, due to the kinetic barrier which was analysed and attributed to oxygen and metal-ion transport in the slag. This barrier was overcome by adding CaSO4 and carbon, which yields a matte (MS) phase via MO + CaSO4 + 4C = MS + CaO + 4CO reaction. Lime thus produced in situ participates in metal oxide/metal sulphide reduction reactions, which are analysed with the help of X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis.

Kinetic Dependence of Refractory Gold Sulfide Biooxidation Using Different Microorganism Association In this investigation, refractory sulfide concentrate from a deposit located in northern Russia was treated using biohydrometallurgical technology. The objective of this work was to compare the accelerated refractory sulfide concentrate biooxidation abilities of the pure and mixed mesophilic and moderately termophilic acidophiles cultures. Pure culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and two associations of the: Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans + Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans + Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans + Leptospirillum + Sulfobacillus were used in this investigation. Results of sulfide concentrate bioleaching were analysed using the enzyme catalysis theory. Different effective kinetics parameters were calculated for Michaelis-Menten equation, such as Michaelis' constant and maximum rate of the enzymatic reaction. It was shown that the increase of microorganisms' species decreased Michaelis' constant. Lower Michaelis' constant characterises increasing bacteria ferment affinity to substrate (treated concentrate). As a result, the rates of sulfide minerals biooxidation have increased. This investigation has demonstrated that cultures of the different microorganism species, including moderately termophilic, allow to enhance different parameters of the biohydrometallurgical technology for the refractory gold sulfide concentrate treatment. We can see that bacterial leaching stage duration decreased and sulfide minerals oxidation increased. When the bioresidues were subjected to the hydrometallurgical stage, which includes aeration and sorption cyanidation, the operation factors were also enhanced. The decrease of aeration duration and the growth of the precious metal extraction by sorption cyanidation was achieved. Cyanide consumption was also reduced. The results of this investigation were used in design of an industrial plant.

"Effect of moisture content must be fully understood for controlling the granule compaction of ceramics. It changes the mechanical behavior of spray-dried granules applied for compaction process, and governs the structure and properties of .ceramics. To understand the time-dependent change in processing, the kinetics was examined for change of moisture content for granules placed in a die and the pressed compacts also. The results were explained in terms of apparent moisture diffusion coefficients. They varied non-linearly with the PVA content in the granules. The results were explained through the non-uniform PVA distribution in the granules.IntroductionMoisture must be controlled in compaction process to produce the green compacts having uniform structure. It affects glass transition temperature of binder and thus the deformation behavior of powder granules under an applied stress. Several studies [1-7] have clarified the effect of moisture content on the compaction behavior of granules and the structure of resultant compacts for both die pressing and cold isostatic pressing (CIP) of pre-formed compacts. In these studies, the moisture contents in the system were equilibrated with the humidity in the atmosphere before compaction. In practice, however, the moisture content in the system may vary with time if the relative humidity of surrounding atmosphere is different from what the granules were equilibrated previously. This is very likely case in real production processes. However, the kinetics of moisture change in the granules as well as in the pre-formed powder compacts have not been well studied. For controlling the microstructure in a system, it is necessary to fully understand the kinetics of moisture change and its relevance to packing structure of powders."

The oxidative degradation kinetics of chalcopyrite have been studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The obtained data are necessary for the kinetic description of the flash fusion process, which can contribute to the optimization of the smelting process in copper extractive metallurgy. Activation energy (Ea) evolutions of the involved processes have been determined by several isoconversional methods; in this sense, the chalcopyrite oxidation processes could be adequately described, among studied models (E1641–16, Ozawa–Flynn–Wall, Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose and Friedman), by the Kissinger–Akahira– Sunose kinetic model. Using this method, Ea and A values are found to be very dependent on the conversion. Under lower conversion levels, higher Ea and A values have been calculated with respect to that found for medium and higher conversion levels.

A significant part of the currently production of the non-ferrous and precious metals is from sulfide ores. Character feature of sulfide ores is the presence in them always pyrite and wide range of different sulfide minerals else. These minerals are the carriers of valuable for industry metals. Due to the low content of the main components, very often call on the use of collective- selective flow-sheets. The extraction of minerals in the collective concentrates determined in a large extent the effectiveness of the collective-selective sheets. In conditions of bulk flotation kinetics to floatate of the various minerals is different. Due to why it is and how it can be used for a more effective selection of minerals ?this is the main task of this report. For this purpose are used results from the bulk flotation of pyrite, copper sulfides, molybdenite, galena, blenda. It is separated and place of host rocks. Base it of large experimentation material, including both electro-kinetic measurements of mineral systems, as well as laboratory flotation tests and factories monitoring it is established kinetics of flotation of mineral particles in conditions of collective flotation. Made an effort to clarify the effect as of the species and the proportion of different sulfide minerals involved in flotation pulp else. Traced was the impact of the density and aeration of the flotation pulp on deferens in kinetics of mineral flotation in condition of balk flotation. The obtained results are used to increase the efficiency of the diffraction flotation of the complex sulfide ores containing precious metals. In standard wear tests, such as pin on disk (ASTM-G99) or block on ring (ASTM-G77), the apparatus simulates conditions that are often different from a machine element real application. Therefore, for an accurate investigation of a tribological application, it is essential to test the real condition in which there are similarities as: geometry, contact details, force application mode, materials, among others. It emphasizes that for studies involving polymeric materials it becomes extremely relevant. Thus, the Laboratory of Surfaces and Contact (LASC) at UTFPR developed an apparatus for sliding bearing on shaft test. In that equipment, loads are applied by a dead-weight system and the frictional force is measured on a load cell. The apparatus operating ranges for load added to the dead weight system and rotation shaft are from 0.2 to 5.0 kgf and from 260 to 3500 rpm, respectively. This paper presents a detailed evaluation of such apparatus, which includes free-body diagrams analysis and a deduction to obtain an equation for the kinetic friction coefficient. Also, the standard measurement uncertainties of a caliper, an electronic scale, and a cell load were determined. It was verified that the kinetic friction coefficient equation is dependent on the apparatus geometry, the applied load, and the frictional force value. Additionally, through the statistical significance analysis it was concluded that some terms in the equation were not significant. Finally, through the application of the error propagation theory in the kinetic friction coefficient equation, the standard measurement uncertainty of the apparatus which showed a value nearby 0.002 along the operating range of the apparatus was obtained.
