Studies of the rate of interdissolution in oxide systems in the solid state are of importance in materials processing through the powder-metallurgical route. As there is a need for following the rate of the such reactions continuously, a new method based on high temperature X-ray diffraction was developed. Mechanical mixtures of the oxides were placed in a high-temperature X-ray diffraction unit and the changes in the intensity and position of the peaks with highest intensity for both the components were followed as functions of time. A suitable theoretical model has been developed in order to interpret the experimental data and evaluate the diffusion coefficients. The method was applied in the case of the system MgO-NiO. The results obtained are compared with those obtained by another new method, based on solid-state galvanic cell technique with calcia stabilized zirconia electrolyte, developed in the Department of Theoretical Metallurgy. The advantage of the present techniques to monitor the progress of the reaction continuously make them suitable for computer control of such processes.

Proper calibration of portable gammaray spectrometers and spectrometric logging equipment is essential if they are to be used for accurate quantitative determinations of radioelement concentrations. In the case of both types of equipment, it is necessary to determine the system calibration constants (stripping factors and sensitivities). In the case of borehole logging equipment, it is further necessary to determine the system response characteristics if the data are to be computer processed to improve the accuracy and resolution of the logs. Facilities are now available near Ottawa for the complete calibration of portable gamma-ray spectrometers and spectrometric logging equipment, in addition to already existing facilities for calibrating airborne gamma-ray spectrometers. Limited additional facilities are also available or planned in several other areas of Canada.

HARRY HINDS: Our second speaker today is Rich Perry. Rich is the manager of leach and dewatering at Newmont Gold Company's Carlin operations. He has been the operator of Newmont's refractory leach development program for the past three years. Prior to joining Newmont in 1994, he was plant superintendent at the Big Springs and Jerritt Canyon Roasting Mills for Independence Mining Company. He graduated from the University of Nevada's Mackay School of Mines, and has lived with his wife and three children in Elko, Nevada, for the past 12 years. Please welcome Rich as he presents "New Facility Design Engineering: On-Site Versus Engineering Companies' Offices." RICH PERRY: Newmont Gold Company has been mining and processing gold ore at its Carlin, Nevada, operations since 1965. Processing is done using oxide milling, heap leaching, and whole ore roasting methods. Newmont began development of refractory leach processing technology at its research and development facility in 1988. The R&D staff focused on developing processing methods for low-grade refractory gold resources at Carlin that could not be economically processed by refractory milling methods. The term refractory ore refers to those ores that contain quantities of sulfides and/or organic carbon that result in low recoveries using conventional cyanide leaching. The R&D staff developed two potential processes deemed worthy of further testing: heap biooxidation to liberate gold occluded by sulfides and ammonium thiosulfate leaching for gold recovery from carbonaceous preg-robbing ores. These were piloted in small heaps by the staff of the R&D and Carlin metallurgical labs from 1990 through 1994. By 1994, Newmont's R&D and metallurgical staffs had unlocked the chemistry and kinetics of the two processes, and it was decided that the operations group would be brought in to begin development of a commercial plant. A project manager at Newmont's Denver office was assigned to the project. Scale-up issues such as biooxidation leach pad design; on/off heap heights; handling of various ore types during stacking and reclaiming; operating costs; and environmental, health, and hygiene concerns using a new process chemistry remained unanswered.

"A new method to predict stope hangingwall failure in underground excavations is proposed. This method compares movement rate for stope hangingwalls, determined from changes in strain or deformation, with changing opening geometry. This geometry is represented by the effective radius factor (ERF), a measure of relative distance to supporting abutments from an opening surface point. This strain-ERF (SERF) approach is applied to an instrumentation program for Brunswick mine near Bathurst, New Brunswick. The SERF method for this case study predicted failure at an ERF of 13.9 m and hangingwall failure actually occurred at an approximate ERF of 12.4 m.RÉSUMÉ Cet article propose une nouvelle méthode permettant de prévoir la rupture de l’éponte supérieure des chambres d’abattage dans les excavations souterraines. Cette méthode compare la vitesse de mouvement des épontes supérieures des chambres d’abattage, déterminée à partir des changements aux niveaux des contraintes ou de la déformation, à la géométrie variable de l’ouverture au jour. Cette géométrie est représentée par le facteur du rayon effectif (ERF, de l’anglais Effective Radius Factor), une mesure de la distance relative jusqu’aux appuis latéraux de soutènement à partir d’un point de la surface d’ouverture au jour. The most commonly used instrumentation for monitoring rock mass behaviour around open stopes is extensometers. The y-axis of Figure 1 represents how the changing rate of movement, measured using either displacement- or stress-type instruments, can be observed over time. The magnitude of movement measured by extensometers can give an approximation of the load on installed support (Milne, Pakalnis, & Lunder, 1996) and a changing rate of movement can indicate approaching instability."

"IntroductionSeveral new smelting processes have been proposed and developed during the last 20 years. This has been true, in particular, for copper smelting technology. The important impulses for the advances in this field have been the recent demands regarding the environmental protection, energy saving and improved utilization of the metals contents of deposits, in particular that of complex raw materials.The methods developed more recently for pursuing these objectives have been outlined in several papers. In some of them the advantages and drawbacks of certain developments have been stressed. These documents are of great importance for assessing the different processes. The following paper tries to explain some details of the cyclone smelting process taking into consideration a few of these well-known presentations. The effectiveness of operation of the cyclone smelting process indicates that this process presents a significant achievement when compared with other conventional methods.The application of the CONTOP smelting cyclone range s beyond the field of copper metallurgy or the smelting of sulphide concentrates with the aid of oxygen. The research work carried out in the pilot plant of KHD Humboldt Wedag AG in Cologne-Porz also includes the recovery of the metal contents of intermediate products and processing of smelter residues which have to be converted in a disposable stat e, free of environmental pollution. This paper explains a few examples in this regard."

IN earlier years, the custom prevailed of regarding the anthracite basins as cases of folding with slight development of faulting. Folding is so pronounced and, in the eastern and western Middle Fields, at times so violent, that the inference was a natural one and led to the widespread impression that practically all the disturbances of the seams could be explained in this way. The cross-sections-and maps prepared forty or more years ago for the Second Geological Survey of Pennsylvania, by Mr. Ashburner under Prof. J. P. Lesley, exhibit little else than folds.1 So far as I can discover faults fail in the charts, except in one small case in the Henry Colliery near Plainsville on the outskirts of Wilkes-Barre. Some years ago, while spending a day or two in Wilkes-Barre, under the guidance of R. V. Norris, I looked over some recent and accurate cross-sections of a number of the large collieries and was deeply impressed with the peculiar behavior of some of the seams and the intervening shales. Thus, a seam might present a small, more or less overturned fold, rising 30 to 50 ft. (9 to 15m.) above its general course, and yet the movement would be taken up in the overlying shales, so as hardly to be noticeable in the seams next above or below. These and similar anomalies, especially when shown with the accuracy of engineer's surveys, possess great scientific and practical interest, bearing as .they do, not alone on coal mining, but on theoretical geology and the actual behavior of strata under great compressive stresses. In preparation for the semicentennial meeting of the Institute, an, effort was therefore made to secure some of the most interesting sections for presentation to the members. The collection of illustrations here shown is mainly due to, Mr. Douglas Bunting of the local committee, to whom and to the contributing companies acknowledgments are due.

"It is quite likely that more than a handful of junior exploration companies will receive some startling news from their accountants this spring when 1989s tax returns are being prepared. These companies could find that, for the first time ever, they will have to write a cheque to the federal government on account of a new federal capital tax which became effective July I, 1989IntroductionMany mining companies which have never had to pay a federal income tax are finding that they indeed have a tax liability for 1989. Non-producing companies, such as junior exploration companies, almost automatically assume that they don't have to pay any income tax. But, a new tax imposed under the Income Tax Act catches especially the company that has no income.Effective July 1, 1989, a federal capital tax (some call it a corporation minimum tax) is payable by any corporate carrying on business in Canada where the corporation has ""taxable capital"" exceeding $10 million. As a result of the popular use of flow-through shares in recent years, many junior exploration companies are finding that their balance sheets show capital stock over $10 million, and that they are consequently caught by the new tax. Further, some of these companies are finding, to their chagrin, that the tax for 1989 was due on February 28, 1990, and that non-deductible interest is ticking away on unpaid taxes."

Recent investigations by Mannesmann Research have shown that disintegration of sinter with widely varying quality levels is subject to a much more complex set of influences than was previously assumed. It was confirmed that disintegration at temperatures between 300 and 600 °C is triggered by the degradation of hematite. The specific tendency of hematite to disintegrate is, however, not constant: sinters containing the same amount of hematite can show widely differing disintegration tendencies depending upon structural homogeneity, porosity and gangue quantity. Especially sinters with heterogeneous structures transmit stress to the hematite phase and this favours disintegration. Another factor is the brittleness of the glassy silicate phase, which can be influenced even by small modifications of minor gangue constituents.

In this apparatus closed sized particles are placed in a container and then fluidized by passing water through the load of particles. Water flow is adjusted to deposit particles in one or more layers depending on the specific gravity of each of the particles, after which the deposited particles are separated in portions of different specific gravity. The obtained portions represent different ore content of the closed sized fraction. The process is repeated for all other size fractions to generate washability curve of the feed. Three different types of iron ores and one coal sample are tested in this equipment. The theoretical yield-grade curve generated for iron ore feed is unique in absence of any such practice for ore minerals. Similar curve is generated for coal and it is compared with washability curve, an existing practice followed worldwide. This comparison validates the performance of the process and the equipment.

Flooding velocities were measured in a laboratory column (96 mm 4) provided with both bottom and side air entry Packings used were 6 mm glass rings and spheres and -16 +8 mm coke. Results showed that when air was introduced through side nozzles flooding velocities were much higher than those obtained when air was introduced at the bottom of the column. Significance of the results and application to blast furnace flooding is discussed from the viewpoint of assymmetric gas flow.

Selective fatty acid flotation of carbonate gangue from sedimentary apatites was achieved under acidic pH's without a specific apatite depressant and without conditioning the pulp with the collector. Concentrates (35-38% P205, 0.8-1% MgO) with high recoveries (80-85%) were produced from Indian and Chinese dolomitic ores. The calcareous and/or dolomitic-siliceous phosphate ores of South Florida and Utah required two flotation stages: one for carbonate removal, as mentioned above, and the other for phosphate recovery from siliceous gangue. Preliminary tests on the South Florida ore gave concentrates analyzing 29% P205 and 0.8% MgO with a P205 recovery of 76%. Data are also included showing the applicability of the process to the dolomitic-calcareous-siliceous Western U.S. phosphate ore from Utah. A concentrate obtained from this ore assayed 30% P205 and about 1% MaO.

Cyanide-free technology of complex copper-lead ores flotation may be improved through enlarged range of pH values, enhanced copper recovery into copper concentrates due to additional recovery of secondary copper sulfides, as well as through enhanced efficiency of lead sulfides depression in process of new flotation modifiers-based selective separation. Study of the effects of flotation modifier (of metal nature) on minerals surface conditions proved that the xanthate is practically not adsorbed on the galenite surfaces due to minerals hydrophilization. Joint effects of sodium sulfite and modifier enhance process conditions for intensive galenite depression and at the same time for effective chalcopyrite and chalcosine flotation within a large pH values range (from pH=8 to pH=10). Identified mechanisms carry inference that proposed chemical reagent treating method is very promising for selective copper-lead concentrates separation. Potential use of carbon-containing materials as zinc flotation modifier to enhancing zinc recovery in processes of lead-zinc ores treatment has been studied. In our flotation tests we used Shalkiya (South Kazakhstan) lead-zinc ores containing such impurities as carbon shales, which presence impedes the process of saleable concentrates production and gives rise to excessive consumption of flotation agents due to the xanthate adsorption on the carbon. Lead and zinc concentrates were produced by process stages as follows: ores milled to 95% Cl. -0.074 +0; lead and zinc roughing flotation and further recleaner and testing operations. Test flotation in open process cycle resulted in enhancing zinc recovery into zinc concentrates by 21.1% and increasing zinc content in zinc concentrates by 3.96% that evidences promising potentialities for use of carbon-containing products as additional zinc flotation modifier. Flotation reagents play a vital role in mineral flotation. In the past century, most studies focused on the modification of anion or cation collectors and the synergistic effect of mixed collectors, which have contributed to research. In this study, we reviewed brand-new reagents, metal-organic/inorganic complexes, with the functional group of metal ion, which are totally different from the traditional anion or cation collector and show absolute specificity for some minerals. For example, Pb-BHA complex collector was developed to realise the atmospheric flotation of scheelite due to the absolute specificity for calcium minerals. Calcium oleate collector was found to be the effective species in the flotation of calcium minerals, and has been employed to selectively separate fluorite from calcite. Selective adsorption of Al-Na2SiO3 polymer on calcite surfaces proved the self-assembly of H2SiO3 polymer using Al3+ had stronger selectively adsorption ability than Na2SiO3. Also that Fe3+-starch complex was a better depressant for iron minerals than caustic starch and contributed to a more efficient reverse flotation. In conclusion, metal ions are good templates for molecular assembly and can be used to control the structure of metal complexes and exhibit special properties, which provide possibilities for the design of new flotation agents. The fundamental characteristics of ultrafine chalcopyrite flotation were investigated by the Bureau of Mines to establish techniques to improve recovery of ultrafine chalcopyrite. Intense agitation during conditioning was found to improve flotation recovery of the ultrafine chalcopyrite. A split-circuit flotation design, treating the plus 38-µm-size ore by the conventional method and treating the minus 38-µm-size ore with intense agitation conditioning followed by flotation, recovered 95.6 pct of the copper in a 28.3-pct-copper concentrate, This was a 5-pct increase in copper recovery over the conventional chalcopyrite flotation method.

"In the Utility Nickel furnaces, the hearth and sidewalls are lined with high-Al2O3 bricks. During charging and thermal cycling (more so as the linings on these reverberatory furnaces age), pieces of brick spall or abrade from the refractory and collect on the top of the bath. These pieces are removed using a non-corrosive slag toward the end of the heat when the bath temperature is ~1600°C.This benign liquid can be generated by two methods. First and most obvious, suitable ingredients can be pre-mixed so that the flux (flux A) is isochemical with the non-corrosive slag. All that is needed to produce this targetted slag is heat. Second, in other proportions (flux B), the pre-mixed ingredients generate a corrosive slag that melts completely at -1200 °C and corrodes some but not all of the brick particles on the bath surface. As the reaction progresses, the slag changes composition eventually attaining the targetted benign composition. Using this option, additions are monitored to avoid overfluxing. In both cases, the generated slag/brick mixture can then be rabbled from the furnace. This practice has been successfully used for over two years and has been a factor in extending Utility Nickel furnace life to its current levels (about25% increase)."

A major highlight of Fiscal Year 1993 is the completion of a new research facility dedicated to the advancement of robotics research and development. This new facility brings to the U.S. Bureau of Mines one of the largest and most unique facilities of its kind in the world. Located at the Bureau's Pittsburgh Research Center, the facility consolidates under one roof, all of the resource requirements of a first class automation and robotics research program. The Mining Robotics Development Center (MRDC) is the result of a major renovation of a large under-utilized warehouse-type structure and brings together the laboratories and offices previously housed in five separate buildings scattered throughout the Pittsburgh Research Center's 238-acre site. This new facility will support the computer-assisted mining research program, a high priority, multi-million dollar program that is expected to have a high impact on the health and safety of miners and coal productivity.

"Removal of silicates and carbonates from sedimentary phosphate ores by the use of new synthetic collector/formulations was investigated in a comparative study with traditionally used collector systems as references. In the direct carbonate flotation the new formulations showed higher efficiency, contributed to an improved balance of P2O5 recovery and P2O5 enrichment in the recovered material. Efficiency of the new formulations containing synthetic surfactants was 1.5–2 times better than potassium salt of fatty acid sulfonate based formulations that are traditionally used for that purpose. The new formulations also provided up to 7% increase in P2O5 recovery at the same P2O5 grade. The new synthetic collectors for removal of silicates showed extremely good selectivity towards silica bearing minerals. The selectivity factor for the flotation tests when new formulations were used was 32–52 and for the flotation tests with the traditional collectors: 20–32. The ratio between distribution of an amount of silicates (as SiO2) and distribution of phosphate in the froth (waste) is defined as the selectivity factor. The new formulations provided more than 2% decrease of the amount of SiO2 at the same P2O5 recovery.INTRODUCTIONPopulation growth and decrease of arable land are the main reasons for constant increase of consumption of apatite (phosphate ore) in the fertilization field (Lannefors, Gorochovceva, Klingberg, Lima, & Gustafsson, 2015). Fertilizers play a key role for farmers to produce more with less land. The phosphate component of the fertilizer is vital for producing healthy and large amount of crop. As a result the demand for phosphate rock is growing.The largest producers of phosphate rock are the Unites States, Morocco, Tunisia, China, Russia, and Brazil. The term “phosphate ore” includes all phosphate-bearing minerals and rocks, but only two of them are of industrial interest: apatite (igneous origin) and sedimentary phosphate (Peres, Araujo, El-Shall, Zhang, & Abdel-Khalek, 2007). The majority of the world’s phosphate deposits are of the sedimentary type. There are two different types of sedimentary phosphates: siliceous and carbonaceous which are categorized based on gangue minerals (such as quartz, carbonates, mica, and clay)."

Nearly 4,800 mining professionals and exhibitors occupying 580 booths attended the 2000 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit, Feb. 28-March 1, in Salt Lake City, UT. The technical program included80 sessions and four specialty symposia: bulk material handling, control 2000, minor elements 2000 and plant operaters. Meeting highlights included the keynote session. This paper discusses the study, design and implementation of the new gas handling system for the Caletones Smelter of Codelco-Chile. A discussion on design conditions for a future Sulphuric Acid Plant using Teniente Converter gases is also included. The old system which started to be modified in 1985 and relied on natural draft and used balloon flues, resulted in a limited gas handling capacity for operation under future process conditions. This system also caused excessive fugitive gases in the smelter working areas. The new system permits handling of process gases from the higher capacity Teniente Converters Installed in 1987-1989 improving the gas handling of the reverberatory furnaces and Peirce-Smith converters as well as the environmental conditions of the smelter. This system utilises improved converter gas hoods, evaporative cooling and electrostatic precipitators gas cleaning, and is based on natural draft.
