Optimization of panels, haulage fleet, and waiting area involves deterministic and low-fidelity methods and experiential knowledge. The process is challenging because coal recovery and operational capabilities must be considered in the solution. The approach in this manuscript comprises the development of an integrated stochastic simulation model of a coal room-and-pillar system that addresses these challenges. The decision variables evaluated are panel width, number of shuttle cars, and change-out time (COT). The results show that the mine should implement the shortest possible COT, decreasing the cycle time and thereby increasing productivity and continuous miner (CM) utilization. The highest productivity and CM utilization for a fleet size of three shuttle cars is found in the 15-entry panel width. For the evaluated fleet sizes, the 19-entry panel width is optimal for the four and five shuttle cars. Among the three variables studied, panel width and fleet size had the most significant effects (5% increase) on the CM productivity, cycle time, and utilization.

Most preventive environmental management practices promote proactive integrated approaches to waste management. For example, life cycle assessment is often used to find the ‘hot spots’ of environmental burdens. This kind of approach is often based on generic data and has rarely been used for tailings. Besides, life cycle assessments are less useful for designing operations or simulating changes in the process and consequent environmental outcomes. It is evident that an integrated approach for tailings research linked to better processing options is needed.The aim of this Nextmine™ project is to develop new tailings management models by streamlining orebody characterisation, process optimisation and rehabilitation. We present an integrated tailings management approach and preliminary results from a case study. Combined grinding and flotation models were developed using geometallurgical data from the orebody, to predict the properties of tailings produced under various processing conditions. The modelling scenarios based on the case study data provide the capacity to predict the composition of tailings and the resulting environmental management implications. For example, the type and content of clay minerals in tailings will affect the geotechnical stability and water recovery. An integrated approach to mine management is presented. A model for achieving the level of control of operations critical to surviving in the current market is outlined. The integrated Production and Cost Management System (PRaCaST) is designed to provide mine managers with a reliable, quantitative, decision-assisting system that can be used in formulating timely responses to complex fluctuations in operations. PRacaST consists of a productivity forecast model, sectional bills of materials containing current resources consumption factors, a linear programming scheduling model, and operations analyses that focus on production and cost performances. The system is applied to an underground coal mine.

This paper contends that optimisation of energy resources through active control and predictive simulation modelling is possible, and that such monitoring leads to large savings in the electricity costs of hot mines (where refrigeration has to be employed). In addition, active monitoring and control can positively affect the establishment of a safe, healthy and productive working environment. In the entire optimisation process certain guidelines were set to ensure that the requirements of the Mine Health and Safety Act were met (South Africa). Varying the quantity of air supplied underground by means of variable speed drive (VSD) fans is one of the crucial factors in the interactive approach towards the optimisation of ventilation, as is refrigeration and the pumping requirements associated with refrigeration. This article highlights the interaction between the amount of air supplied and the effect it has on refrigeration requirements underground. This article also considers the effect that this would have on contaminant control. Various tools are available for ventilation and cooling design for mining. A lot of these tools are based on the assumption of steady state conditions and do not take into account instantaneous changes in conditions, day-to-day, or hour-to-hour (such as for temperature and contaminants). They also do not take into account the optimisation of energy resources related to the creation of the acceptable underground conditions. With these tools worst-case and best-case scenarios are identified, and strategic decisions are made accordingly. Currently, the amount of the fresh air, the velocity of the air, and its general temperature in the mine are only changed when one production phase changes into another (or when unacceptable conditions occur as a result of poor design or neglect). This means that during a specific production phase (which can last for several months), there can be an oversupply, or undersupply, of energy resources, which will obviously affect the concentration levels of the various contaminants (through under or oversupply of air).

An innovative biological treatment system designed to detoxify cyanide and nitrate and immobilize metals from cyanide leach operations is described. A pilot-plant demonstration was conducted to detoxify cyanide and immobilize several metals from a process stream at the McCoy/Cove Mine. Testing was performed under the EPA's Mine Waste Technology and Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation Demonstration Programs. This technology was successful in detoxifying cyanide and effective in removing metals. The pH was consistently neutralized and nitrates were successfully removed. Results show that biological treatment can offer an innovative, cost-effective alternative for the treatment of mining wastewaters.

BNFL, an internationally acclaimed company noted for its nuclear fuel cycle services and waste management technologies, collaborated with Viridian BioProcessing Ltd, a small company acknowledged for developing environmental biological processes, and an internationally recognised professor of biological sciences, to develop an unique bioremediation process for treating toxic, heavy metal contaminated land. This paper describes the process, with particular reference to the problem and scope of land contamination with toxic, heavy metals and the current available technologies. The process technologies are based on using indigenous, soil micro-organisms which can be stimulated to produce acid or sulphide ions to mobilise or precipitate the heavy metals respectively. Laboratory studies have indicated metal removal efficiencies of greater than 90 % can be achieved, whilst recovery efficiencies from the metal loaded leachate are even higher at approximately 95%.

Human ventures into space are entering a new phase in which missions formerly driven by government agencies are now being replaced by those led by commercial enterprises – in launch, satellite deployment, resupply of the International Space Station and space tourism. In the not-too-distant future, commercial opportunities will also include the mining of asteroids, comets, the Moon and Mars. This research examines the role of off-Earth mining in a growing space economy. In this investigation, the term ‘mining’ is taken to embrace minerals, ice/water and other in situ resources. As the off-Earth mining initiative could be the engine that drives the space economy, it would be useful to understand what off-Earth mining market conditions and technology requirements are needed for that economy to prosper. These specific elements are studied in the wider context of creating an economy that could ultimately support a sustainable Mars colony. A thorough improvement in mine safety is contingent on many factors that require scientific decision-making for selection and prioritizing of important factors for safety improvement. Their analysis using an established scientific method can improve mines’ safety conditions and assist the administration for informed decision-making. This research establishes a mine safety evaluation index and proposes an integrative model based on the entropy weight and grey clustering methods. In the evaluation index, 27 significant factors of safety are identified and categorized into 7 criteria. The proposed evaluation system analyzes all indicators according to Pakistan’s current mine safety situation and their significance for potential safety improvement in the future. Results reveal that current safety practices are outdated due to a lack of mechanization in the mining industry and minimal capability of the management to achieve the desired safety targets. Appropriate safety policies and safety education are missing in the daily working environment. The lack of overseeing the execution of safety operations and the lack of ambition and strong work ethic workers contribute to the paucity of mines’ safety conditions. The prevention and control systems to manage risks and hazard are not in place, and the working environment in mines remain difficult. Therefore, to have enhanced mine safety, important factors can be addressed in chronological order, as presented in this paper. The proposed methodological approach can be applied to other prioritization applications to analyze the indicators and determine the appropriate management strategies.

The analysis of mine safety indicators using a scientific method can improve mine safety and assist management in making informed decisions. This research establishes a mine safety evaluation index and proposes an integrative evaluation model based on the entropy weight and grey clustering methods. The index consists of 27 indicators classified into seven criteria: working environment (A), miners’ attributes (B), safety policies and education (E), prevention and control (F), and monitoring and supervision system (G). Using Pakistan’s mine safety situation as a case study, the proposed model categorized the indicators into five safety levels (very low, low, medium, high, very high) for the present situation and for their relevance in terms of future safety improvement. The results show all of the criteria falling into the very low level for the current mine safety situation. Three of the criteria — C, E and G — are identified as having very high levels of significance for future safety improvements.

"In flotation research, relatively little attention has been paid to understanding particle-bubble detachment phenomena compared with attachment processes. With CFD models now incorporating attachment/detachment kinetics, it is important to obtain more accurate formulations for detachment probability. The formula most often used is due to Bloom and Heindel (2002) who proposed that the rate of detachment would equal the product of detachment frequency, as previously estimated by other authors, and probability of destabilization, as estimated previously by Schulze. These two factors both account for the balance between stabilization and destabilization forces, so the product accounts for this effect twice. An integrated procedure has been followed to estimate the overall detachment rate by re-analysing the process. In this analysis, detachment rate is calculated as the frequency of eddy-aggregate interactions (or “collisions”) sufficiently energetic to cause detachment. The Bond number analysis of Schulze has been incorporated into the turbulence frequency analysis of previous authors in an integrated way. The new formulation has essentially the same type of dependencies as the previous model, but gives a lower detachment frequency. Detachment frequency has been calculated using the new formula for conditions relevant to an industrial flotation cell. INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that the effectiveness of froth flotation for separating different minerals is limited to the particle size range of approximately 10–100 mm (Trahar & Warren, 1976; Trahar, 1981). Fine particles tend to follow fluid streamlines around bubbles limiting the likelihood of bubble–particle collision, while coarse particles can be more easily detached from bubbles before collection can be achieved.Phenomenological models have been developed to quantify the physico-chemical aspects of flotation in order to better understand factors affecting these limitations, and to suggest ways of broadening the window of feasible flotation. Koh and Schwarz (2008) have incorporated these models into computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of flotation cells, which have then been used for design and scale-up purposes (Schwarz et al., 2015). The models are based on dividing the process of bubble–particle interaction into three subprocesses: collision, adhesion and detachment. Of these, the hydrodynamics of bubble–particle collision and the probability of adhesion have been studied most extensively, while the dynamics of detachment have received relatively little attention from investigators."

Ferromanganese crusts on topographic highs in the western Pacific Ocean are believed to be potential resources of cobalt, nickel and platinum. Earlier shipboard geological and geophysical studies by Japanese organizations have focused on mapping of distribution of thickness and metal contents of the deposits when estimating the total reserves. This paper summarizes our attempt to obtain more feasible data of distribution patterns and configuration of the deposits which are important parameters for resource evaluation at some seamounts in the South Pacific Ocean. Morphology of the seamounts and micro-topography of the sea floors are described using shipboard acoustic remote sensing, deep-tow sonar images, and TV/camera. [ ]

A combined heavy medium-flotation process which incorporates the advantages of two widely employed cleaning methods, namely, heavy medium separation and flotation was used to achieve improved separation of coal from ash at fine sizes and to recover the heavy medium as a substantially recyclable product. The investigation was carried out in two successive phases. In the first phase, tests were performed to deter-mine the effect of different variables such as the medium density, flotation time, magnetite type, etc. on the efficiency of the process using in-plant samples from Homer City Coal Preparation Plant. In the second phase, the optimum conditions determined in the first phase were employed to determine the applicability of the process to a few Central Pennsylvania coals. It was observed that the process was very effective in recovering the magnetite. In most of the cases investigated, the magnetite was separated from the non-magnetic material at approximate-1 to 99 % recovery with a grade ranging from 95 to 99 %. The grade of magnetite decreased with increase in ash content of coal and with decrease in size of magnetite.

Samarium (Sm), as one of the rare earth elements (REEs), has gained significant attention in the production of samarium- cobalt (SmCo) magnets due to their high corrosion and oxidation resistance, as well as their high-temperature stability. SmCo magnets find applications in various industries, including but not limited to national defense, aerospace, military and medical equipment. Sm and Co have been classified as critical metals due to their economic importance and supply risk. Recovering Sm from SmCo magnets is an effective method to ensure a stable supply. The present study investigates an integrated hydrometallurgical treatment and combustion process for the preparation of rare earth oxide (Sm2O3 ) powders from SmCo. Initially, SmCo powders are exposed to nitric acid, and the resulting slurry is selectively oxidized at 250 °C to obtain Sm(NO3)3 , Co2O3 and Fe2O3 . Subsequently, the selectively oxidized powders are leached with water to extract Sm. Sm2O3 powders are produced from the obtained leaching solution using an energy- and time-efficient solution combustion process. Finally, the optimal conditions for the production of Sm2O3 are identified, and the produced powder is characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) analysis.

"Gold ores often show significant inter-domain variation with respect to the gravity recoverable gold (GRG) content and the leach behaviour of the non-GRG component. Liberation assessment is extremely difficult for gold due to its malleability and the high sampling errors and poor test reproducibility resulting from gold’s high specific gravity and the low metal concentrations that occur in most gold ores. Ground falls in U.S. underground coal mines can lead to significant consequences, including loss of life, injuries, damaged equipment, and production stoppage. Improving the safety of the workplace is of utmost importance for mine workers and the U.S. economy. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident/injury/illness dataset provides short narratives for reported incidents, including ground-falls. The main objective of this study is to develop a framework that includes: 1) utilizing machine learning algorithms to categorize ground-fall incidents from narratives based on the main cause of the occurrence and 2) demonstrating an example of a user-friendly visualization to display injury/fatality trends from narratives in U.S. coal mines between 1983 and 2021. The developed framework was tested on a subset of the data and achieved an average F1-score of 96% in categorizing the incidents. The outcome will help identify areas requiring additional research and innovative solutions to reduce severe occupational hazards.

"For several years, the existence of a deposit of barite (BaS04) near Brookfield, Nova Scotia, has been known. A very large deposit of strontium (SrS04) near Sydney, Cape Breton, is a more recent discovery. Cape Chemical Syndicate has been formed to work the deposits. A five-million-dollar integrated mineral processing and chemical plant is planned for Sydney to produce various compounds of barium and strontium. The mineral processing plant includes the Jones Wet Magnetic Separator and will produce high-purity barite and celestite. These products will be processed further in the fine grinding plant and the chemical plant. The general project is described, covering the deposits, processing and markets."

"An integrated model is developed to represent the three-dimensional electromagnetic wave propagation and thermal phenomena during microwave heating of ceramics and dielectric/biological materials. The model development is based on the edge finite element formulation for electromagnetic fields and the node fmite element formulation for thermal phenomena. Results are presented and compared well with available analytical solutions and experimental measurements. "An integrated mathematical model is developed to represent the thermomechanical behavior of the materials and microstructure evolution during metal forging. The model development is based on the finite element solution of the thermoviscoplastic deformation of metals coupled with the internal state variable model describing the microstructure evolution involving work hardening, recovery, recrystallization and grain size distribution. The procedures for the integration of the microstructure model into the macro finite element model are described. Computed results for both macro and micro phenomena during metal forging, such thermomechanical deformation such as velocity field and effective strain rate and materials characteristics such as distribution of grain size and recrystallization volume fraction, are presented.1. IntroductionThermomechanical behavior and material microstructural evolution are two critical, interrelated aspects associated with metal workpiece undergoing large plastic deformations such as encountered in forging processes. In much of the modeling work up to date, these two aspects have been addressed separately. "Fluctuation in market price of mineral products has enforced mining companies to cut down their operating costs. One useful way of reducing operating costs in mining operations is to make optimal operational decisions, incorporating efficient mining fleet management systems (FMS). Over the last 50 years, several types of FMS have been developed and introduced in the mining systems around the world. However, there are two major shortcomings in existing systems. Firstly, none of the existing systems consider effects of the short-term plan on dynamic truck assignment. Secondly, most of the existing FMSs make decisions in a way that optimize a specific objective while ignoring others. Herein, we propose a multi stage and multi objective FMS that deals with aforementioned shortcomings of the currently available systems. The developed FMS, in its upper stage, links semi-dynamic operational decision making process to the short-term production plan by simultaneously assigning shovels to mining faces and allocating trucks to the shovels by implementing its first multi objective decision making model. Then in its second stage, in a real time dynamic decision making process, it assigns trucks to shovels and corresponding destinations by optimizing its second multi objective decision making model. The developed fleet management system has been verified using an Iron ore case study and the results are presented in this paper. INTRODUCTION Open pit mining method is the most common method to mine mineral from the earth. Based on Wetherelt and van der Wielen (2011) there exist 2500 open pit metal mines that are categorized as industrial scale mines. Over all of those, the amount of material handled using truck and shovel material handling system is more than the amount handled by all other systems together (Humphrey & Wagner, 2011).It has been proven by several studies that more than 50 percent of operating cost in a truck and shovel based open pit mining operation is accounted for material handling (Moradi Afrapoli & Askari-Nasab, 2017, Alarie & Gamache, 2002, Ahangaran et al., 2012). Thus, introducing even 1 to 2 percent cut in its material handling cost saves huge amount of money for the stakeholders. Over the last 50 years, two major areas have been identified to cut this cost. On one hand mining industries have been implementing equipment with higher production capacities, and on the other hand, researchers have been developing operations research techniques to make dynamic decisions as close to optimal as possible to deduct operational costs in truck and shovel based mining operations."
