The literature of milling is replete with papers devoted to the subject of ball milling, all of which no doubt have contributed in one way or another to progress in that art. In this paper reference will be made to only a few of the many authors, but the value of the contributions of all who have written on that subject is hereby acknowledged. With a few exceptions the efforts of most students of the subject have been devoted to laboratory investigations of principles. Davis1 was one of the first to report on plant-scale investigations and to present to mill men certain criteria for the guidance of ball-milling practices. His conclusions with respect to the significance of sizing analyses of classifier sands in their relation to the factors of mill speed and ball sizing are particularly referred to. Those conclusions were: 1. If the balls are large or the speed of the mill is high, crowding will appear at the finer sizes in the classifier sands. 2. If the balls are small or the speed is low, crowding will appear at the coarser sizes in the classifier sands. 3. The indications are that best efficiency is obtained when the screen analysis of the sands show a minimum crowding at any size. The last conclusion was qualified by the statement that it had not been proved conclusively. It is surprising, however, that the litera- ture of later years reveals little evidence that millmen have made any serious attempt to apply those criteria. This may, perhaps, be explained by the fact that the average plant-scale ball-milling problem presents so many variables that an investigation of any one of them encounters the problem of control of the others—a problem that often is unsurmountable in a small plant. In a large plant, in which there is a duplication of grinding units in parallel operation, opportunity may be afforded for determining the value of such criteria. Nevertheless, a study of published data from grinding circuits of both large and small plants suggests that either Davis' criteria have been tried and found inapplicable or have never been given consideration. For the purpose of testing Davis' conclusions and with improvement of ball-milling efficiency as the final objective, a test program was initiated in the concentrator of the New Cornelia branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation early in 1938. The practices of that plant have already been described.2 The fine-grinding units are arranged so that any one of eight units may be operated as a test unit and its results compared with those of the remaining units. All units receive similar feed from a common storage bin, in which the product of the fine-crushing plant is bedded by traveling tripper. The ball mills are all similar in size and operated at the same speeds, and are individually metered. The feeder conveyors of each unit are equipped with Merrick weightometers. This paper reviews recent developments in the application of classification practice to the origination of fine-grinding flow sheets and traces the history of the mechanical classifier from its initial application for separating cyanide process sands and slimes down to its present six or more distinctly different applications at copper concentrators; it undertakes to show also, by reference to diagrammatic fine-grinding flow sheets and accompanying operating data from nine copper concentrators in western North America, the advantages gained from improved classi-ficiation flow sheets at these properties in terms of reduced grinding costs, improved flexibility of operation or increased recovery. Comparison is only made between different fine-grinding flow sheets at a given plant and no attempt is made to compare different concentrators, on account of ore variations and differences in metallurgical objectives sought,. The adoption of the flotation process in recent years, and especially the development of selective flotation, has brought a demand for much finer grinding than formerly. This has caused much thought to be given to grinding efficiency, and today there is hardly a mill where the grinding flow sheet is not under close study and subject to frequent changes. When closed-circuit grinding was introduced into metallurgy some years ago, its value was recognized at once, and since then the combination of mills and classifiers has been regarded and operated as a grinding unit. Apart from variations in both the grinding and classifying elements of this unit, there have been many variations in grouping tried by different mills to suit varying conditions of ore and plant limitations. Although operators feel that in most cases their present flow sheets are on trial, and the data on present work are often incomplete, we have felt that a discussion of the progress that has been made and an endeavor to show present trends and their results should be of use to the profession. We have therefore prepared flow sheets of some of the larger mills with which we have been in contact and present them with available data as to their results, in the hope that they may be of service now rather than later when practice may have become more standardized and more complete records and analyses have been made. A problem of possible subsidence of the surface from mining operations, which might have had disastrous results, arose in 1913 at the Brier Hill mine, of the Penn Iron Mining Co., near Norway, Mich., now managed by Pickands, Mather & Co. for the Bethlehem Steel Co. A double track and sidings of the Chicago & North Western Railroad passed over part of the mine, and if subsidence had reached the surface it might have affected the stability of the tracks. The chief purpose of this paper is to record the facts disclosed by investigations of underground movement from 1913 to 1919, when the tracks were moved, and subsequently at intervals, as engineering data of value from mining carried on below the tracks in the steeply pitching lenses. A secondary purpose of this paper is to describe a novel method for determining the rate of speed of upward breaking above the mine excavations. This method was found effective and might be used elsewhere under similar conditions. The mine workings under consideration were developed from the Brier Hill shaft, which was circular, concrete-lined, 14 ft. in diameter and about 900 ft. deep. They extended about 800 ft. westward from the shaft, and nearly parallel to a corresponding length of the railroad tracks. The highest part of these workings was at a depth of 400 ft. below the tracks (Figs. 1 to 12). The mining company had the right to remove the ore, the railroad assuming that the surface would be supported. Finally, without legal controversy, an amicable adjustment was reached as to what should be done to lessen or obviate the hazard of subsidence. DuRing recent years, tremendous strides have been made in the economical use of coal. This has resulted in, and to some extent has been a result of, making the fuel specifications more and more rigid. For this reason, all producers have found it necessary to improve their preparation materially, both as to sizing and the elimination of impurities, either by more effective preparation underground or at the tipple and cleaning plant, or both. This cause and its effect in all producing fields seem likely to continue for several years at least. The splendid inherent qualities of the Pocahontas and New River coals are known all over the world, but their good reputation is only partly due to inherent qualities, and to natural conditions which generally favor loading coal comparatively free from impurities; it is due in large measure to the care and skill used, either with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to ship products consistently low in ash. The first coal from the West Virginia smokeless fields was mined and shipped near Quinnimont, on New River, in 1871, while the first shipments from the Pocahontas field were in 1883. The development of both fields progressed rapidly. At first activities followed the main lines of the Chesapeake & Ohio and Norfolk & Western railroads, and were extended later as branch lines were built from these roads. The Virginian R. R., about 1907, opened up the Winding Gulf territory, which has since become a large producer of smokeless coals from the Pocahontas and the New River measures. Early Cleaning Methods In the early days, the tipples were simple wooden structures, with bar screens for separating the fines from the lump coal. All cleaning was done by the miners at the face, or by pickers in the railroad cars. Gates were provided in the chutes by which the flow of coal could be stopped when necessary while the pickers raked the surface of the coal in the car and picked out the impurities. Although nearly 10 pct of the total tonnage of coal produced annually within the United States is handled by bulk freighters on the Great Lakes, very little of the detail connected with it has been published other than occasional newspaper stories and publication of tonnage statistics. Of the total tonnage floated on the Lakes each year some 10,000,000 is stored and distributed from the port of Duluth-Superior, at the western end of Lake Superior commonly known as the Head of the Lakes. This port has the largest single area concentration of coal docks in the world. Since this area contains the largest ore docks, the largest movable material handling bridge, the largest and highest grain elevator and the largest coal bri-quetting plant in the world, it is entirely fitting and proper that here also should be located the largest coal dock and what we believe to be the world's largest clam shell. Of the sixteen coal docks operated by ten companies, five are owned and operated by the North Western-Hanna Fuel Co. which has two docks on the Superior, Wis., waterfront and three docks in Duluth, Minn. It is with these five docks that we are primarily concerned, General History In the summer of 1871 a small sailing vessel entered the harbor of Duluth-Superior with the first commercial coal cargo. All the coal brought up that first year did not amount to more than 3000 tons. During the year 1877 the first dock equipped for handling coal was built in Duluth. Coal receipts increased to 52,785 tons in 1879 the first year for which an official record was kept. Since then the volume of water-borne coal to the Head of the Lakes steadily increased to a maximum of 12,688,321 tons in the year 1923. This tonnage was nearly equalled in the year 1927 and the next highest tonnage recent year was in 1946 when 10,105,703 tons were unloaded. The average annual bring-up over a ten year period 1938 to 1947 was 8,605,231 tons. Approximately 30 pct of the coal unloaded at the Head of the Lakes is handled over the docks of the North Western-Hanna Fuel Co. Competition of other fuels coupled with expansion of coal fields in the mid-west have held coal receipts for Duluth-Superior at a relatively constant figure during the last eight years although the total tonnage of coal floated on the Great Lakes has more than doubled in the past 25 years. Reaction of oxygen and bituminous coal starts as soon as the coal bed is exposed to air and, with some coals, proceeds with significant velocity even at normal temperatures and at normal oxygen partial pressures of one-fifth of an atmosphere. At higher temperatures, the reaction is greatly accelerated and ultimately a condition is reached where the process is very rapid and we then speak of combustion. It is the purpose of the present paper to discuss the reactions of oxygen and coal at temperatures below those of active combustion. It is these low temperature oxidation reactions which are responsible for heating in storage and for marked changes in agglutinating proper-ties. These reactions may also be employed for the preparation of organic acids, which are of direct interest to the chemical industry. For convenience in discussion, the low temperature reactions of oxygen and bituminous coal can be roughly divided into three stages though there is, of course, overlapping. Stage I is a surface oxidation stage, characterized by the addition of oxygen, with the formation of oxygen containing groups some of which have acidic properties. Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and water may be formed con-comitantly and are always liberated at higher temperatures, and in cases where the oxidation is prolonged. Superficially, the coal is little affected by this primary stage of oxidation and usually only minor changes in ultimate composition result. There may be definite changes in coking and coking properties, and heat of combustion susceptibility to further oxidation. The presence of acidic groups can be demonstrated by specific reactions. These groups may show cation exchange properties like the mineral zeolites. The formation of oxalic acid has been reported. If the oxidation is continued, a large fraction of the organic material of the coal is converted ultimately into alkali soluble, acid insoluble products, which have been given the name "regenerated humic acids" and which are the characteristic products of Stage 2. These humic acids, in the solid stage, do not differ greatly in appearance from the original coal, but show large differences in chemical composition and chemical and physical properties. Along with the humic acids, carbon dioxide and some of the water soluble types of Stage 3, are also formed. If the oxidation is carried still further, the humic acids may be degraded completely to the simpler, lower molecular weight acids of Stage 3 which are characterized by solubility in acid as well as in alkaline media, and by their orange, yellow or white colors. Additional carbon dioxide is formed in the transformation from Stage 2 to Stage 3 and, for a number of American coals, a maximum yield of the water soluble types of acids is reached when about 50 pct of the carbon of the coal is converted to carbon dioxide. The small domestic underfeed stoker as now designed is unusually sensitive to the coking and plastic properties of coals, and when the attempt is made to burn the high rank coking and caking coals of the Appalachian fields, serious trouble may occur. Part of the trouble may be caused by the ash content and clinkering characteristics of the particular coal in use, but more often it is the result of an excessive ac-in of coke in the form of ''trees,, or masses in the fuel bed. Often the zone of burning becomes so restricted that the fire goes out, and in extreme cases the fire may be lifted completely out of the fuel bed and away from the air ports. Even if the fire is preserved, excessive coking may cause response to subsequent heat demand to be slow and irregular. Coke trees seem to grow most readily during periods of hold-fire operation, so that in order to preserve the fire in mild weather it is often necessary to set the timer for such a long operating period each hour that much unneeded and unwanted heat is developed, causing discomfort. During demand periods the fire may pick up so slowly that the intense burning which develops just before stoker cut-off causes a serious overshooting of the thermostat. Stoker coal performance tests which have been made in a number of labora- tories1,2,3,4,5 are one method of approach to the problem Of selecting stoker coals- As yet these tests have not been standardized and they are expensive and time-consuming. The value of the results probably increases with the length of the test. Sherman and co-workers at Battelle Memorial Institute believe that even a one-week test is not too reliable a trial2 and it is quite likely that Others will agree. A great advantage of such tests is that characteristics of coals, other than the tendency to form coke masses, may be evaluated from them. The selection of stoker coals would be greatly facilitated if there existed some simp1e measure Of the tendency Of a a to form coke in a fuel bed. Although possessing all Of the disadvantages Of any small-scale laboratory test, the test for the free-swelling index of coal has been found useful for evaluating the probable effects Of swelling properties upon combustion.7 Ostborg, Limbacherand Sherman, have shown that the test can Predict, roughly, the tendency Of coke to accumulate in the fuel bed Of a domestic stoker. They also gave instances of its value in predicting combustion behavior in some large installations. The use of the test for free-swelling index has become well established and has been adopted as a standard by the American Society for Testing Materials.8 When domestic stoker coal investigations began at the State Mine Experiment Station in the summer of 1944, it was decided

The most effective means of controlling the dust in the drilling of rock has been found after careful investigation to be collection of this dust at the source. By direct collection, all the dust is collected at the collar of the drill hole and deposited into suitable containers. Equipment for handling this work can be either portable or stationary, depending upon the particular requirements and the application. For most work the portable unit is found most advantageous, and with a capacity capable of handling two drills operating simultaneously. Such a portable unit would consist of a metal cap, or hood, placed against the face of the rock through which the drill steel would be inserted. This hood is connected by a flexible rubber hose to a primary separator, where the bulk of the dust is collected. From here a second length of hose connects to the secondary stage of separation, where the fine particles of dust are collected and which is built in as an integral part of the vacuum producer. Hoods are adapted for vertical, horizontal or stope drilling, and mounted so as to become immediately effective when collaring the hole and remain in place continuously. Such dust collectors can be used with either wet or dry drilling. However, in view of the fact that when drilling dry and using the dust collector, the dust count can be maintained within safe limits, wet drilling becomes unnecessary. Furthermore, it has been found that when using the dust collector not only has the dust hazard been eliminated, but also increased footage can be obtained. Samples taken under a wide variation of conditions indicate that where the dust count required is below five million particles per cubic foot, dust collectors will be required. Opreators, in general, accept the use of this additional equipment favorably, and it is generally felt that such means of collecting the dust will soon be universally adopted. Tests made by the Connecticut Department of Health Bureau of Occupational Diseases show dust counts reduced from 203 million particles to 6.05 million by the use of the dust collector, when drilling dry.

Henry Marion Howe, in whose memory we are gathered together, was one of the great thinkers who develop from time to time to whom is given the rare gift of synthesis. Analysis is given to few, but synthesis, the ability to show the relation of all parts to each other and thus to give a clear picture of the whole, is reserved for the very few. Analysis can be achieved by honesty, intelligence, and industry, but synthesis is only given to genius. Professor Howe's crowning achievement is the picture of the whole iron-carbon series shown in Fig. I, which places steel, malleable, gray iron, mottled and chilled irons in their proper relation to each other and shows the essential unity of the series. Perhaps his best statement of the case is found on page go of the Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron in these words: " Each member of the gray cast-iron series consists of the metallic matrix approximately equivalent to that member of the steel-white-cast-iron series to which it corresponds in percentage of combined carbon with its continuity broken up—by masses of graphite ..." Apparently he had taken considerable interest in this idea around the turn of the century, for he refers to a discussion at the Franklin Institute in I900 in which he said: "Though many others had probably conceived this relation between the steels and cast irons, it was here enunciated for the first time, so far as I know. It was received with great incredulity." The concept was explained in some detail in a paper on "The Constitution of Cast Iron" presented before the A.S.T.M. in 1902 when Professor Howe was retiring president of that young society. In the discussion Dr. Sauveur stated that he was "very well acquainted with Professor Howe's theory of the constitution of cast iron," and went on to say that while he "shared it to the fullest extent, some foundrymen . . . claim cast iron is a metal entirely different from steel . . . that steel and cast iron have very little in common, and that therefore the knowledge gained in the study of steel is of little or no value in the study of cast iron." Dr. Moldenke, in discussing the same paper, said he had been working on the same theory for 12 years but he laid no claim to publication. Discussing the difference in the micro-structure of the metallic matrix, Professor Howe pointed out that "such minor structural differences are indeed to be expected, because of the difference in the conditions under which these constituents are generated. "One difference in these conditions is that the steel of most micrographs has been either forged or at least treated thermally in such a way as to give a new structure radically different from that which formed during the initial solidification, whereas the cast irons have not. When I was honored by being invited to give the Howe Memorial Lecture, I decided to read Howe's book, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," published in I9I6—that is, about 25 years ago—in search of a text. I found the book written in fine, clear, attractive, yet precise style, as I expected, knowing that his father— Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe, his mother— Julia Ward Howe, and all of his four brothers and sisters had lived in a New England literary atmosphere and had written books. This leads me to suggest that many authors of metallurgical papers and books could well study Howe's writings with a view to the improvement of their own. I failed to find a specific text, but did find a subject, for in reading his book I was struck by the few instances in which time is considered explicitly as a factor in the phenomena examined, and by the fact that many of the hottest arguments would have been settled had time been taken properly into account. Indeed, Howe hardly mentions time except in a rather incidental way, as in a few references to lag; for instance: The lowering of temperature at which the transformation occurs by rapid cooling . . . is a phenomenon of undercooling or lag. It is in part explained by the fact that the transformation itself is a time-consuming reaction which, setting in during a rapid fall of temperature, is naturally protracted till the temperature has sunk far below that at which it is due. He does discuss, quite fully, the iron-clrbon equilibrium diagram, as known at that time, introducing it by stating: As he is a reasonable man who is not deterred from using a hand truck for moving his trunk by the consideration that he has thus to move a trunk plus a truck, so am I reasonable in putting into your hands this useful, indeed indispensable. tool for mastering the ABC of iron metallurgy. When I was honored by being invited to give the Howe Memorial Lecture, I decided to read Howe's book, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," published in I9I6—that is, about 25 years ago—in search of a text. I found the book written in fine, clear, attractive, yet precise style, as I expected, knowing that his father— Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe, his mother— Julia Ward Howe, and all of his four brothers and sisters had lived in a New England literary atmosphere and had written books. This leads me to suggest that many authors of metallurgical papers and books could well study Howe's writings with a view to the improvement of their own. I failed to find a specific text, but did find a subject, for in reading his book I was struck by the few instances in which time is considered explicitly as a factor in the phenomena examined, and by the fact that many of the hottest arguments would have been settled had time been taken properly into account. Indeed, Howe hardly mentions time except in a rather incidental way, as in a few references to lag; for instance: The lowering of temperature at which the transformation occurs by rapid cooling . . . is a phenomenon of undercooling or lag. It is in part explained by the fact that the transformation itself is a time-consuming reaction which, setting in during a rapid fall of temperature, is naturally protracted till the temperature has sunk far below that at which it is due. He does discuss, quite fully, the iron-clrbon equilibrium diagram, as known at that time, introducing it by stating: As he is a reasonable man who is not deterred from using a hand truck for moving his trunk by the consideration that he has thus to move a trunk plus a truck, so am I reasonable in putting into your hands this useful, indeed indispensable. tool for mastering the ABC of iron metallurgy. With increased coal production and mechanization of coal mines many transportation problems arise. The main objective is to bring the coal to the tipple or dump it as quickly as possible. Larger and faster haulage locomotives or two locomotives connected in tandem have been adopted to solve the problem. Motor equipment, gears and control systems of locomotives to be placed on these hauls are carefully studied to meet these requirements, by an analysis of motor characteristic curves with the corresponding tractive effort curves, in order to determine the correct load for maximum efficiency and to determine the approximate schedule. Control equipment is usually considered to be the controller and resistance. Sometimes accelerating curves are calculated in order to obtain smooth starting in the least possible time without slipping the wheels. Train control is very important, but why limit this to acceleration ? Deceleratien-or-retardation of the locomotive is a part of the train control and should be given as much consideration as the control for acceleration. Types or Braking Common braking systems for mine locomotives utilize screw-type mechanical brakes, dynamic braking and the air brake. For gathering and haulage locomotives, the srrew-type mechanical brake is regarded as standard. A brake of this kind cannot be applied without much effort and lapse of time. Motormen, like other people, follow the path of least resistance, and therefore have their brakes ready for instant application—which means that the shoes are virtually dragging. Even then, a motorman bucks and plugs the motors to gain time and avoid as much physical effort as possible. "Bucking of motors" consists in turning the reverse cylinder of the controller to parallel position corresponding to the opposite direction of travel while the locomotive is in motion, without applying power from an external source. When this occurs, both motors tend to act as series generators, because the armatures are revolving and there is residual magnetism in the field circuit. Owing to slight differences in motor manufacture, one of these will generate a slightly higher potential and will overcome the generated voltage of the second and tend to drive it as a motor in the reverse Direction.-This action retards the locomotive but is very severe on the segments of the reverse cylinder and on the motor commutators. "Plugging motors" is the application of power to the motors corresponding to the opposite direction of travel. In order to "plug" the motors it is necessary first to "buck,, them (which reverses the connections to the motors) and then to apply power. Theoretically, this should be done only in an emergency, but locomotives in mine service are frequently thus treated., Dynamic braking is retardation of the locomotive by the motors acting as generators, which take no power from the line.

The observations and data presented in this paper are the result of extensive study of flowing wells, most of which were in the Maracaibo Lake Basin of Venezuela. The Lago Petroleum Corpn. had extensive production in this area, gas-oil ratios were low, and the problem was to determine whether by careful handling of the wells with respect to flowing conditions and by conserving the gas, the oil production of the wells could be maintained by natural flow until it had declined to a rate which could be handled with an ordinary working barrel, thereby avoiding the high cost of gas-lift equipment installation in the lake bed. The problem was complicated by the nature of the wells themselves. Production is from soft, comparatively unconsolidated sands, necessitating screen pipe in all wells. It was not only necessary to keep the wells flowing but to keep them flowing without heading, as the release of pressure upon making a head brought large quantities of sand into the wells, sanding them up or possibly cutting out the screen pipe. In furtherance of the plan of keeping wells flowing as long as possible, each well was equipped with a casinghead and tubinghead recording pressure gage, and an oil and gas separator set. About one-half of the wells were equipped with gas meters. All wells were tubed before bringing into production. Frequently individual gages were taken on each well. A large scale chart was plotted for each well, showing daily oil production, gas production, gas-oil ratio, tubinghead pressure and casinghead pressure. Any deviation from the normal was immediately checked and the condition remedied if possible. Theory of Flowing Wells Based upon considerable study of these records, it is believed that the flow of a well actuated by gas is mainly a problem in velocity, a certain minimum velocity in the flow string being necessary for the gas to carry the oil. If this minimum velocity is not obtained the oil drops back and the well heads or goes dead. The point of minimum velocity is of course at the bottom of the tubing, where the gas is under the highest pressure and therefore occupies the least volume. Some years ago when the success of the gas-lift at Seminole was so pronounced, there was considerable broadcasting of the statement that

The resistance to flow of mixtures of gas and oil in passing up through the flow tubing of oil wells operated by gas-lift or by natural flow is a factor in oil-recovery technic that has received but little attention. Yet accurate design of a tubing installation for a particular set of conditions, where operation is by either of these methods, is impossible without quantitative data on the pressure loss suffered by the oil-gas mixture in its passage through the well tubing to the surface. Because of lack of such information, petroleum production technologists have been compelled to approach this problem by " cut-and-try" methods, which, doubtless in many cases, has resulted in the installation and use of tubing too large or too small for most efficient utilization of the expansive force of the gas used in lifting the oil. Impressed with the necessity for information of this character, the authors have conducted a series of tests with large-scale apparatus in the petroleum engineering laboratories of the University of California, designed to be productive of data that would afford a means of attacking the problem of flow-tubing design on a more scientific basis. Mechanics of Expulsion of Gas-oil Mixtures in Naturally Flowing and Gas-lift Wells When oil is lifted from a well by the expansive force of compressed natural gas or air, the fluids enter the lower end of the eduction tube under elevated pressure, with the gas partly in solution, but largely distributed in the form of occluded bubbles within the oil mass. As discharged from deep wells, after reaching the surface, there will normally be at least 60 times as much gas, by volume, as of oil; and in many cases the ratio of gas volume to that of the oil will have a value as great as 1000 or more. On entering the lower end of the eduction tube, however, a relatively smaller volume of gas will be found in the oil-gas mixture, on account of compression of the gas in accordance with the elevated pressure necessary. When a well strikes an oil-bearing layer, the oil has a pressure which is generally sufficient to enable it to rise to near the surface (sometimes above the surface). As soon as a well begins to produce, however, the liquid moves through the pores of the reservoir bed and the pressure in the well becomes much lower than the pressure originally prevailing there. At some distance from the well, however, the pressure in the reservoir bed remains unaltered; thus the pressure of the oil has not only to lift the oil, but also to overcome the friction resistance in the pores. The fact that so many oil wells are gushers is a consequence of the energy accumulated in the gas. In gushing the well acts as a gas-lift. A mixture of liquid and gas (the latter partly dissolved in the former) rises vertically from the oil-bearing layer through a cylindrical casing to the surface. In time conditions alter and the well ceases to gush regularly, then the gushing can be further promoted by inserting a narrower tube in the well and connecting the top of the oil string to the tubing. If the action in time becomes irregular, the gushing can be kept up for a further period by forcing gas between the two tubes. In the oil fields the term "gas-lift" is used actually only where extraneous gas is applied, as in the last of the stages mentioned. The action, however, is just the same whether the gas exclusively originates from the formation, or is partly applied artificially. Thus by gas-lift we simply mean a vertical tube in which the energy of gas under pressure, and of dissolved gas, is utilized for raising a liquid. In gushing oil wells the pressure is frequently very high and the absorption coefficient 0.4 (expressed in vol. ratio) of the coexisting gas is not particularly high, so that in reality it should be assumed that a considerable portion of the gas, at any rate at the bottom of the gas-lift, is dissolved in the oil. For water-producing wells this is not usually of such importance. The investigations of Wymanl have demonstrated that copper deoxidized with several of the commonly used agents that confer immunily to ordinary hydrogen em-brittlement can still be embrittled if it is annealed alternately under oxidizing and reducing conditions. During the oxidizing cycle, oxygen diffuses into the copper and frequently deposits a subscale composed of the oxide of the residual deoxidizing agent. Upon subsequent reduction with hot hydrogen, the copper becomes ruptured along the grain boundaries to a depth sharply limited by the previous penetration of oxygen as delineated by the inner boundary of the subscale. Obviously the sensitivity to this kind of hydrogen embrittlement is engendered by the introduction of oxygen during the oxidizing anneal, but beyond this the mechanism of the process, and hence the controlling factors, remain obscure. There are several possibilities: (I) oxygen dissolved in the copper matrix of the subscale may, upon cooling prior to the hydrogen anneal, precipitate as cuprous oxide which is subsequently reduced by hydrogen as in the familiar case of hydrogen embrittlement; (2) oxygen in solid solution in copper may itself confer susceptibility to embrittlement by hydrogen; (3) the normally refractory oxides such as those of aluminum, silicon and titanium may themselves be reduced by hydrogen when in contact with copper; or (4) the precipitated oxides of the subscale may be complex compounds such, perhaps, as SiO2.Cu2O, which are partially reduced by hydrogen. These possibilities have been examined, and it has been concluded that the first three and possibly the fourth are operative collectively or individually under more or less predictable conditions. Effect OF Precipitated Cuprous Oxide and Dissolved Oxygen The literature provides no definite proof that oxygen in solid solution in copper can confer susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement; indeed, the research of Leiter2 seemed to indicate the opposite—that to produce the effect, cuprous oxide must be present in massive form and in a more or less continuous network along the grain boundaries. To test this point, pure copper has been annealed in hydrogen under conditions designed to ensure the presence in various samples of: (I) precipitated cuprous oxide, (2) dissolved oxygen only, and (3) no oxygen in any form. Very pure copper" said to contain no oxygen and no spectro-scopically detectable traces of any other element (that is, no individual detectable impurity in quantity greater than 0.0001 per cent) was used. Strips of this material cold.-rolled 75 per cent to 1/8 in. in thickness were subjected to the following treatments, the results of which are noted:
