The difficulties encountered in justifying replacements for over-age mobile mine equipment at the Gay Mine are common to most mining operations. More critical management reviews, resulting from ever rising capital expenses, increased such difficulties. These increased difficulties are especially apparent to those who are primarily operators and are not statisticians, mathematicians, or computer oriented. The Gay Mine is located 17 miles east of the town of Fort Hall in southern Idaho. This open pit operation annually supplies the J. R. Simplot Company and the FMC Corporation with 1.5 MM - 2.0 MM tons of phosphate ore. Stripping ratios average approximately three bank cubic yards of waste per ton of ore mined. The mobile mine equipment fleet consists of ten 24 yard scrapers; twenty-one 30-50 ton end dump trucks; four 32 42 yard shovels; fifteen dozers in the D-8 and D-9 classes; and three road patrols. Equipment replacement is based on the results of evaluations made on individual units. Authorization of capital expenditures for equipment replacement is dependent upon a favorable profitability index (true rate of return on investment) plus a favorable payout time. The system is based on cash flows and requires the determination of (1) the net cash outflows in the form of capital expenses plus (2) the expected cash inflows resulting from reduced expenses and depreciation tax credits. After adjustments for taxes and the time value of money, the net amounts are used to calculate the required indices. The basic elements for the system related to the replacement of mobile mine equipment include: (1) the determination of dollar penalties to be expected from the continued use of aging equipment; (2) the selection of equipment that will provide the greatest return on the investment dollars; (3) the quantification of the expected savings; and (4) the calculations of the prescribed indices. In order to plan the most efficient mine installation, a company should take advantage of all available information and tools. One of the first factors of a coal reserve that needs to be determined as accurately as possible is the quality of coal the mine will have access to during the life of the installation. With the aid of many types of well logs and computor analysis, we are investigating several methods of log correlation to determine such data as moisture, ash, sulphur, and BTU on an in place basis. It may be possible to determine this data more accurately in this manner than by using diamond drill cores for analysis and thus allow for a more profitable mine installation. The production of an underground mine is based on many factors, two of these being roof control and line water, where present either in the roof or coal seam. Using many of the same logs obtained from reserve and active mine areas, we have attempted to determine roof and floor characteristics such as strength, lithology, and moisture properties. Using data obtained from this program, we will make comments on possible length of bolt to be used, possible mining width, and pillar size as they would pertain to these reserves and active mine areas.

The events which led to computer control of the grinding circuit at Brenda Mines are described, beginning with mill operating philosophy. High production rates are encouraged so that, despite severe upstream disturbances, a manual control method to meet this philosophy had developed. Unfortunately, due to the time interval between manual control adjustments, losses in production resulted. An analog control method was devised and, although superior to manual control in some situations, was found to suffer from several practical limitations. The data logging capabilities of a control computer seemed warranted. Circuit test- work combined with an analysis of operating data showed that (1) metallurgical personnel, at times could increase production rates by as much as 10 percent over that achieved by grinding operators, (2) the chosen data base required an increase of 2 percent or more to be statistically significant and (3) for a 2 percent increase there would be a significant rate of return of investment in a computer installation, Consequently one grinding circuit was fully instrumented, and a rented control computer was installed by Brenda personnel. Prior to installation, Brenda metallurgical and instrumentation personnel were trained in the use of the computer. An experimental program was devised with short and long term objectives. The short term objective was to develop a practical control strategy which would yield immediate production improvement. This goal has been met as described in this paper. Statistically significant increases in excess of 2 percent have been established. Work is being completed for the permanent installation of computer control on all four grinding circuits at the present time. Long term objectives are (1) off line analysis of the circuit using mathematical models of process units, (2) on line experiments to study alternative contol tactics, and (3) possible expansion of computer facilities to the crushing plant.

During the 1970's geostatisticians were often accused of not paying sufficient attention to geologic features in the computerised generation of ore reserves. Unfortunately this charge was all -too-often justified and the results of such studies tended to be oversimplified and failed to reveal the full potential of computerised reserve estimation and geostatistical methods. There were some notable exceptions to this trend. Techniques were described that paid a great deal of respect to the geologic characteristics peculiar to certain deposits (Rendu J-M, 1984, Barnes T. E., 1982). At Gold Fields several techniques have been developed for handling the geologic characteristics of ore bodies for reserve estimation purposes. These have developed over time and the evolution of their adoption has been a reflection of our own learning experience from the practical application of computerised reserve estimation on many precious metal s deposits. Problems Typical problems that have been experienced by ourselves and which we have learned to guard against and watch for are: ? "smearing" at geologic contacts ? confusion caused by disparate "selective mining unit sizes" and block sizes ? conflicting estimates generated by field staff using various versions of the polygonal method ? problems in generating meaningful variograms

"Water is increasingly being recognised as a material business risk that many companies are still not well-equipped to deal with. Despite a raft of water-risk focused initiatives, methodologies and guidelines, the challenge of managing the strong link between the technical and operational water issues, along with the growing external challenges and interests in water, remain a significant risk to a companyÆs ability to deliver value.This paper provides an overview of the key lessons learnt from ERMÆs experience of working with companies across a range of water sensitive industry sectors, in particular, the mining and oil and gas sectors, to develop and implement practical approaches to manage business critical water risk. These examples highlight the importance of managing water risk by linking technical and operational aspects of water management - with the longer term strategic and social license aspects. Four key ingredients were identified that are central to providing companies with a leading edge in the successful mitigation of water risk: understanding and evaluating water risk including the technical and operational aspects of water management, plus the longer term strategic and social aspects articulating a strong business case that prioritises water risks and their financial exposure to the organisation constructing a clear roadmap that practically links the water strategy objectives with on-the-ground implementation and action building capacity in the organisation to manage, engage and coordinate on water to mitigate risk.CITATION:Ringwood, K and Tang, A, 2013. Newmont's research, operations, history and experience with pre-treatment of preg-robbing carbonaceous ores are described, with emphasis on the chemistry, physics and kinetics of chlorine treatment. Present operations, control strategy and projected changes are also described, including a summary of the adsorption of chlorine into pulps and off-gas scrubbing. Conditions of chlorination have been optimized by the use of Eh-pH diagrams of the gold-chlorine-water system, and have resulted in significant increases in gold recoveries and decreases in chlorine consumptions.

An extensive program of marked ball wear testing (MBWT), laboratory corrosion studies, and worn ball surface analyses has been used to gain insight about the role of corrosion in the overall wear process. In some environments, localized corrosion is observed; the actual wear mechanisms in such cases are pitting/spalling and abrasion. Factors affecting the occurrence of pitting include the abrasiveness of the ore, corrosivity of the slurry, corrosion resistance of the media, and galvanic coupling effects. Elimination of pitting substantially improves overall wear resistance. When pitting is not observed, the contributions of general corrosion are significantly less.

More than 50% of all the molybdenum produced in the world is a by-product of copper production. A bulk Cu-Mo concentrate is first produced, which is subsequently separated into Cu and Mo concentrates. The Cu-Mo separation circuits rely on the use of inorganic Cu sulfide depressants such as NaSH, Na2S, and Nokes, which are hazardous, and sometimes require very large dosages for effective depression. Synthetic polymeric depressants are safer and more efficient, and are now being used on the plant-scale. Data presented in this paper demonstrates that these polymeric depressants can replace 50-90% of all the NaSH in Cu-Mo separation at a fraction of the NaSH dosage. In this paper we provide an overview of the mechanistic and practical aspects of the Cu-Mo separation with inorganic depressants and polymeric depressants. Important practical aspects include depression dynamics (related to conditioning time and rate of depression), optimum pH for effective separation, the role of pH modifiers such as lime and NaOH, and the effect of flotation gas on the efficacy of the separation. Using nitrogen as flotation gas, the NaSH consumption can be reduced by up to 95% by using a small amount of polymeric depressant. The experiments with conditioning time demonstrate that there is a significant rate component to the depression mechanism with NaSH, which is absent for the polymeric depressant system. This has important implications in the effective use and application of the depressant. It is also demonstrated that the pH modifier type (NaOH or Ca(OH)2) has no significant effect on separation efficiency and Mo recovery (i.e. Ca2+ ions do not depress MoS2 in the Cu-Mo separation).

All large-scale applications of conditional simulations intend to benefit from the ‘correct’ (or’ accurate’) characterization of uncertainty, adequately describing the variability observed from the data and its impact on the final objective. This paper discusses a number of relevant issues that highlight the extent to which, in reality, a model of uncertainty is dependent on the random function model chosen. Often in the presence of large number of conditioning data most available random function models will provide similar models of uncertainty. When conditioning is scarce, the resulting models of uncertainty will vary more widely, since the final output will depend mostly on the underlying assumptions of the model chosen. The application described in this paper is taken from a large porphyry Cu operation in northern Chile, and it demonstrates the impact of several variables on the resulting models of uncertainty. In particular, some of the decisions involved include the number of conditioning data and the underlying Random Function model used (Gaussian or indicator-based). Also, implementation-specific parameters must be decided upon, such as grid size used, random number generator, simple or ordinary kriging, multiple-grid simulation, and simulation of irregular three-dimensional bodies (as opposed to regular grids). Some practical guidelines are proposed to deal with these decisions.

It is a distinct privilege to have the opportunity of addressing this group today. Although I, myself, am not a mining engineer, I have always had profound admiration and respect for those of you who each day live and work according to the tenets of Murphy's Law. Murphy, as some of you may know, was an Irish philosopher whose sole contribution to his field was the observation, "In the mining industry, if anything can possibly go wrong, it will!" You have heard this afternoon a variety of papers, touching on or describing in some detail imminent problems which presently face the coal industry. Many of these problems show no signs of diminishing. Actually, there is good reason to believe that they will intensify as governing bodies pass additional enabling legislation and regulatory agencies adopt more stringent "Rules and Regulations". In many cases, these groups are seemingly oblivious or indifferent to either cost factors or technical problems involved in achieving the desired goals.

With passage of the Federal coal' Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, many challenges have been directed to the industry's mining and safety engineers. The most critical challenge is that of ventilation. The language concerning ventilation in many sections of the Act could very well deprive or limit the mining engineer in planning the ventilation for new mines, since the Act requires federal approval of all ventilation plans. Dependent upon approval and of course application of the law, this could, due to economics, prohibit the opening of new mines in some cases. Petitions for modification of some mandatory standards relating to ventilation have already been filed under Section 301(c). It is quite possible that many of these standards may be modified.

Mobile roof supports are shield-type support units mounted on crawler tracks. Mobile roof support (MRS) units are used during retreat mining, and they eliminate the setting of roadway, turn, and crosscut breaker posts which are required during pillar recovery operations. Mobiles are a more effective ground support than timbers, and their usage enhance the safety of section personnel and reduces material handling injuries. MRS usage is rapidly increasing, and approximately 40 U.S. coal mines have successfully employed this relatively new technology. This paper is in response to increasing requests from operators, State and Federal Regulatory Agencies, and others on the practical aspects of MRS usage in underground coal mines. During this investigation, nearly half of the U.S. mines which have utilized mobiles were visited. This report depicts the more common pillar extraction methods which operators have found successful. The Christmas tree and outside lift methods are illustrated and discussed. Roof control plans that do not require breaker posts or allow pillar extraction with fewer than four mobiles are also examined. In addition, operators' experiences with setting pressures, loads, and rates of loading during pillar extraction are addressed. Mining and support strategies to more effectively control hillseams, weak roof, and gob overrides which have entrapped equipment are also discussed.

Alkyl hydroxamates are well known collectors for oxide copper minerals as evidenced by the large amount of published literature. Our studies on a wide variety of copper ores from around the world have shown that alkyl hydroxamates will recover most of the "floatable" oxide copper minerals from an ore. They are available commercially, and they offer many advantages over alternative technologies for oxide copper recovery. In spite of this, the full potential of hydroxamates has not been exploited in the industry. The objective of this paper is to provide relevant practical aspects and guidelines to facilitate successful application of hydroxamates in operating plants. A critical analysis of the available information and data, based on several case studies, notation testing, and microscopic analysis indicates that alkyl hydroxamates can effectively recover well-defined oxide minerals of copper, but not copper occurrences such as Cu-bearing goethite (often misidentified as cuprite) which report as Acid Soluble copper in chemical assays. Prior to any notation testing with hydroxamates, it is necessary to assess the various modes of occurrence of Acid Soluble copper using microscopic and microprobe analysis.

IN the pumping of sands, slurries and slimes, practices developed over the years are the real keystones of successful operation. These practices are necessarily based on modifications of familiar theories. Practical methods used in the solution of problems involving the pumping of materials are set forth in the following discussion. BASIC REQUIREMENTS To pump sands and slurries economically, a few basic requirements must be met by the pumping system as a whole. A pipe-line velocity must be established that will move the fluid mixture throughout the entire system without any possibility of the solids settling out. To accomplish this, the velocity of flow must be slightly in excess of the critical velocity of the mixture. The critical velocity of a mixture varies from 3 ft. per sec. to 18 ft. per sec., depending on the screen analysis, concentration, and specific gravity of the solids in the mixture. Most tailings are pumped at a minimum velocity of 4 ft. per sec. if they include slimes, whereas the pipe lines of sand and gravel dredges require velocities as high as 18 ft. per second. A number of articles have been written on the determination of the minimum velocities required to maintain solids in suspension. Studies have also been made on the friction and pumping heads developed when handling solids in suspension.1-4 Our experience so far has shown that, within the normal operating limits of a pumping system, the friction factor follows more nearly the basis described by Howard,1 who says, among his conclusions: " ... values of ƒ (friction factor) .. . will decrease with an increase in velocity." This conclusion is borne out by our actual experience. When the velocity in a pipe line is not sufficient to keep the solids in suspension, the total friction head is greater than when the velocity is increased to a point where the solids are in suspension. A slight increase in the volume of feed to the pump and a slight increase in the pump speed are usually all that is necessary to put the system in balance. MAINTAINING CONSTANT VOLUME Within reasonable limits, the volume of mixture to be handled through a pipe line should be held constant, so that the required velocity will be provided at all times. There are several ways in which this can be accomplished. The commonest is to provide a sump of sufficient capacity to take care of slight surges in the volume of mixture being fed to the pumping system. This sump, however, should not be as large as a settling chamber. The use of a float-controlled, fresh-water make-up valve in a sump will guarantee a constant volume. The Deister No. 7, "77" and "88" Coal Washing Tables have been used by the coal industry in the cleaning of finer sizes of coal (-1/2") since washing of coals became necessary. This paper will deal with the in-plant use of the CONCENCO "88" Deister Coal Washing Table, along with a brief description of the Deister Refuse Superscalper. Efficient in-plant operation of the Deister Coal Washing Table can be accomplished by the adjustment of six basic variables. These variables are: 1. Headmotion 2. Feed 3. Riffle Pattern 4. Dressing Water 5. End Elevation Adjustment 6. Side Tilt Adjustment VARIABLE NO. 1 HEADMOTION The reciprocating movement of the "88" Table is developed within the headmotion entirely by rotating eccentric weights. Four parallel shafts each carry pairs of eccentric weights (Figure 1-A). The shafts are geared together with gears of 2 to 1 and 1 to 1 ratios, so that the two shafts in vertical alignment which carry the small eccentric weights operate at twice the speed of the other two shafts. The other two shafts are also in vertical alignment with each other and carry large eccentric weights. As power is supplied to one high-speed shaft, once each revolution the forces produced by the large eccentric weights are reinforced and then opposed by the small eccentric weights in a horizontal plane. The direction of movement of the table decks is reversed much more sharply at the forward end than at the backboard end of the stroke, causing material to move toward the refuse end of the table. Because in the vertical plane all centrifugal forces oppose each other and cancel out, there is no vertical movement and virtually no impact to the support steel. The "88" Coal Washing Table is suspended by wire-rope cables from three overhead steel beams, and operates with a perfectly uniform and exact differential motion curve in every stroke (Figure 1-B). The decks, being attached to the headmotion, are reciprocated in a parallel line from the head- motion to the refuse corner at speeds varying from 260-300 strokes per minute. Both length of stroke and speed are set at the factory for the coal characteristic desired and should not be changed. A 3 HP motor is mounted on the top of the headmotion and uses 3 V-belts to transmit driving power to the headmotion. The headmotion must be kept running on a horizontal plane. Punch marks are provided on the side and end of the main frame for use in leveling the motion (Figure 1-C). In leveling the motion, the work must always be done with two cables. To level the long side of the headmotion both front or both rear cables are raised or lowered to bring motion back to level. To level side to side, both right side cables or left side cables are raised or lowered to bring motion back to level VARlABLE NO. 2 FEED When tabling different size coals, each deck of a "88" DIAGONAL-DECK Coal Washing Table will handle feeds as described in figure 2-A.

The excavation of ramps and tunnels often requires high-speed development with (or without) the use of high-energy mining equipment such as loaders, dump trucks, TBMs and roadheaders. This high-speed development creates a challenge in terms of providing a safe and productive working environment. For example, heat from continuously exposed surrounding rock, heat from broken rock, heat generated by mining equipment, potential in flows of hot ground water, pollution from associated diesel equipment and the distance of the advancing face from fresh through-ventilation all have to be taken into account when designing ventilation systems for high-speed ramp and tunnel developments. This paper discusses methods of achieving acceptable environments at the face and along the length of the tunnel. The methodology has been successfully implemented in the development of long (up to 20 km) TBM drives in the Lesotho Highlands Project and in mining projects in hot rock using drill and blast methods as well as mechanized methods using continuous miners and roadheaders. The determination of heat loads includes calculation of the heat flow within the surrounding rock, evaluation of the operating cycle of the equipment and the contribution to the overall heat load of the broken rock as it travels out of the tunnel. The determination of heat loads from surrounding rock in new tunnels required a modification of the algorithms generally used for established excavations. The paper also examines the use of, for example, mobile duct and fan systems to ensure that fresh air is delivered to the specific areas where workers are located.

When Enron rocked the United States with its Titanic-sized financial accounting scandal, miners and metallurgists were probably too busy on the mine sites in remote locations to wonder about its ripple effect. But then Enron sank, Arthur Andersen tanked and the list of scandals, costing billions of dollars, continued to ripple. Followed by the Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act of 2002 (Sarbanes-Oxley), the recent credit crunch and weak economy, the currents from Enron?s collapse eventually washed right into the mine and the mill. These events placed intense scrutiny on metals production accounting processes as traditional semi-qualitative metal accounting practices provided insufficient credibility and transparency. ?There is growing intolerance of organizations that are unsure about the location of thousands of tonnes of ore, which will typically lose 10 to 15% of their notional value on the way to the concentrator,? Rob Morrison wrote in the opening chapter to An Introduction to Metal Accounting and Balancing. ?If the measurement and forecasts also contain qualitative (fudge) factors, a very real suspicion might emerge about just how much metal might disappear (by theft or misplacement) before detection becomes likely.? Metallurgical accounting, put simply, is the tracking and reporting of the quantity and quality (tonnage and grade, usually) of materials entering or leaving each stage from source to product for a specified accounting period. Lacking an accounting standard, metals accounting in precious metal operations has been performed in an ad-hoc, informal manner, leading to numerous errors and unidentified potentially significant inefficiencies and financial losses. As a result, mining companies are beginning to examine the quality of their metals accounting systems since they form the basis of mining company?s financial accounts and reports. As part of an effort to create that accounting standard in the mineral industry, University of Queensland?s Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre published the textbook An Introduction to Metal Accounting and Balancing in 2009. While development of a textbook and standard are significant steps forward, the challenge in the precious metals industry is in the application of some of these suggested practices. Though improving process transparency and precious metals accounting reporting accuracy is a key driver for change from the financial side, perhaps even more important is the potential benefit to operational performance that comes with better measurement, accounting and reconciliation systems. Loss of precious metals, processing of waste and inefficient mining and processing systems are all problems that are faced in an operation on a daily basis that can help be resolved through improvements in metal accounting and reconciliation. The financial consequences of such operational inefficiencies and bad decisions based on poor information are arguably greater than consequences of fraudulent accounting. Large discrepancies between mine and mill measurement systems that measure the quantity and quality of valuable material currently exist. Some of these are expected because of statistical variation, but inherent random measurement variation is sometimes an insufficient explanation. Though the mill can usually make much better production estimates through their measurement systems (that is, less variation), this knowledge rarely benefits the mine. 3 Moreover, even if the mine does a reasonably good job of estimating expected production at the grade control level (in situ), issues such as blast movement, poor mining practice and inefficient ore/waste classification make for a disconnect between the in situ estimates of the mine and the estimates from the concentrator. This inhibits effective evaluation of the reserve and grade control models using concentrator estimates. Linking the two ends, mining and concentration, is a neglected area sorely in need of an overhaul. Hence the need for improved mine to mill reconciliation ? the area of comparing, balancing and adjusting production estimates between mine and mill for consistency in reporting.

The title of the paper which I have been asked to present is somewhat misleading it infers in fact that there is a definite coalbed height below which raps or canopies cannot be applied to electric face equipment. Although this may be so with regard to certain pieces of existing equipment under certain conditions, to date we do not have enough experience to determine this magic number. Therefore MESA is continuing to hold the line on the time frames stipulated in Section 75.1710-1 of the Mandatory Safety Standards - Underground Coal Mines, which at this point in time requires these protective structures in mining heights of 60 inches or more. In order to give you an idea why we are taking such a firm stand on this matter, I believe it is necessary to describe some of the background work that was done prior to promulgation of the regulations and to give a resume of our experience since the requirements have become effective. Initially MESA made field investigations of all underground mines to determine what the state of the art was in the use of cabs and canopies for protecting equip¬ment operators from falls of roof. These studies revealed that the application was basically in its infancy and what progress had been made was due to the impetus of the mine operators themselves. Manufacturers of electric face equip¬ment provided these structures only on the direct order from the mining company and built them to their specifications. In talking to the operators and the miners in mines where cabs or canopies were in use, it was the consensus that these structures did improve safety and that although originally there was some reluctance on the part; of the miners to work in the confines of a cab or canopy, mast would not work without them once they had been adapted to the equipment.
