"It is widely known that steel made from iron ore pellets high in phosphorus is brittle. Removal of phosphorus from iron ores such as hematite has proven to be difficult. The majority of research on phosphorus removal from hematite ores has been focused on flotation. The purpose of this study was to assess phosphorus distribution under current operations at an existing hematite concentrator and determine how efficient the plant is at removing phosphorus. Objectives included: (1) Perform a phosphorus balance at an operating plant to assess phosphorus distribution under current operations; (2) Determine phosphorus removal efficiency of each separating unit and (3) Perform a quantitative liberation analysis to determine max phosphorus removal by physical means. Liberation was quantitatively determined using wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) to separate iron ore from liberated apatite (and other nonmagnetic compounds).It was observed that 61.2% of the total phosphorus entering Plant F was rejected during current operations. The desliming process was the most efficient step at removing phosphorus (45.1% P removed), whereas the flotation step was much less effective (16.1% P removed). Liberation analyses indicated that the deslime thickener may have been more efficient at removing phosphorus than the flotation circuit due to the greater abundance of liberated phosphorus in the deslime thickener feed. The scavenger returns stream was identified as having a high concentration of phosphorus and a possible point of phosphorus removal. However, liberation analyses indicated that only 32.4% of the total phosphorus in the stream was liberated. Grinding the scavenger returns to 80% passing 5.2 µm increased the amount of liberated phosphorus in the stream to 70.4%."

Melting has become a popular pre-treatment method for municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration residues in Japan. Although the method is effective in stabilizing the hazardous organic sub-stances such as dioxin, it concentrates the heavy metals such as Zn, Pb, Cu, and Cd in a newly formed fly ash (melting fly ash). Melting fly ash is classified as a hazardous waste because of the leaching potential of these heavy metals in landfill environment. Extraction and recovery of these metals seem to be more environmentally and economically attractive than disposing the material to landfill after immobilization process. This study proposes a Carrier-in-Pulp (CIP) method as a new hydrometallurgical route to reject and recover heavy metals from fly ash. In this method, a carrier material which recovers the extracted metals is added simultaneously with fly ash to leaching solutions and is harvested from the pulp by physical separation method like magnetic separation or sieving. To demonstrate the effect of CIP method, shaking flask experiments were conducted under various conditions using NaCl solution as lixiviant and iron powder or granular activated carbon as carrier materials. In the CIP method using iron powder, more than 97 wt% of Pb and Zn were extracted from the ash to the solution phase. However, the iron powder which was harvested from the pulp by magnetic separation, recovered only Pb (more than 94%) through cementation, leaving behind Zn ions in the solution phase. Due to this problem, granular activated carbon (GAC) was considered as an alternative carrier material. Single- and multi-metal adsorption experiments using granular activated carbon were conducted as a preliminary study. Around 85% Pb and 88% Zn were recovered by GAC in the single-metal adsorption experiment, while 60% Pb and 70% Zn in the multi-metal experiment. These results showed that activated carbon was superior to the iron powder since it was able to recover both Pb and Zn through adsorption. The leaching test conducted on the residue after the CIP-Fe treatment revealed that the solubilisation of Pb was successfully suppressed to meet landfilling guidelines.

"The mining industry is currently facing significant challenges to identify and adopt sustainable collector chemistry that effectively recover value minerals in difficult-to-process low-grade resources. These are typically characterized by complex mineralogy and the presence of significant amounts of penalty gangue sulfide minerals, especially pyrit which is a challenge to separate from value minerals at many major mine operations. Three chemical strategies for dealing with gangue sulfides and penalty elements are: a) selective flotation of value minerals while rejecting penalty minerals in the whole circuit, b) rejecting penalty minerals in an appropriate part of the circuit using selective depressants, c) using a combination of selective collectors and depressants in appropriate parts of the circuit. This paper will evaluate different strategies for dealing with those penalty elements and propose the most efficient alternative. New products and application technologies have been developed in the past 25 years by Cytec for implementing these strategies as dictated by the particular needs of a given plant. However, in recognition of the growing interest in meeting the sustainability challenges, Cytec Research and Development have been focused in the development of greener products (collectors, modifiers and frothers) and processes using FLOTATION MATRIX 100TM approach used to develop the optimal collector system for each specific ore. An overview of these new developments is given in this paper using case studies of application of selective collectors and polymeric modifiers including the newer, greener chemistries."

MINERAL production in almost all European countries suffered a sharp setback because of the war. Plants were damaged, transportation facilities disrupted, and labor dispersed and demoralized. Since the war, due to lack of confidence and economic stability, there has been little incentive to rebuild and expand the mineral industries even though a big demand at high prices exists for mineral products. Most mining and metallurgical companies in Europe hesitate to invest their capital because of the tendency towards nationalizing industry, high taxes, and low output of labor, as well as the deficiency of mine supplies and equipment within their countries. In short, they do not have faith in the future, and for these same reasons and fears most of the mining companies in America will not risk capital investment in Europe. In Europe, including the United Kingdom, free enterprise has been losing ground and as a result the foundation of their economic welfare is being undermined. American mining interests willing to take the initiative could help in counteracting this influence if a way were found for them to co-operate with the European producer without too great a risk.

The commonly accepted genetic theories of Pilbara iron ores and Woodie Woodie manganese ores have often presented them as quite unique. This apparent uniqueness is not confined to just iron and manganese, but is also seen in gold and copper deposits in Western Australia. The published material on iron and manganese ores would seem to have either a quite complicated genesis or none at all. An alternate theory for the origin of these deposits is presented which involves a protore with simple oxidation and pH controls with hydrothermal fluid sources from the diagenesis and dewatering of the underlying strata. This theory explains the distribution, thinning, cold dolerites and very high concentrations of deleterious minerals observed in these deposits. This genesis system is also related to the systems that deposit hydrothermal gold and copper in sediments in the region.This paper presents the author’s observations, sampling and mapping after several decades studying and exploring for the minerals in Australia and locations overseas. All of these theories were developed with (or in spite of!) the guidance of Mal Kneeshaw, but would never have seen the light of day without him and the others presenting here. It is not what I would call scientifically polished, and possibly deserves more detailed studies; it is, however, presented as a discussion paper.CITATION:Schwann, P B, 2015. In order to recover minerals by flotation, the sub-processes of collector adsorption onto the valuable minerals followed by bubble-particle attachment should occur efficiently. This paper investigates both of these sub-processes for various thiol collectors and their mixtures onto base metal sulfide minerals. The aim of the work was to investigate whether there is a correlation between the strength of the collector interaction with the mineral and the subsequent bubble-particle attachment. The collector-mineral affinity was measured experimentally using an isothermal titration calorimeter in order to determine the molar enthalpy of adsorption for each collector-mineral system. The bubble-particle attachment was measured using a microflotation device which essentially determines the hydrophobicity of the mineral. Sodium ethyl xanthate (SEX) and sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate (DTC) and mixtures thereof were used as collectors with either single minerals or binary mixtures of pyrite and chalcopyrite, respectively. The adsorption enthalpies of the collectors were interpreted with reference to the chemical structure of the collector molecule and showed that the greater the positive inductive effect of the collector, which may be qualitatively related to their pKa, the greater their affinity for the mineral surface. In the microflotation studies, recoveries were strongly related to the alkyl chain length but there was no correlation between the enthalpies of adsorption and the flotation recoveries. When mixtures of collectors were used there was clear evidence of synergistic effects and in the case of DTC/xanthate mixtures it is possible that this synergism is related to a DTC promoted oxidation of xanthate to dixanthogen. When mixtures of pyrite and chalcopyrite were used the flotation recovery and enthalpy of adsorption of SEX onto the individual pyrite particles in the mixture increased substantially compared to the case of pyrite alone. Mechanisms are proposed to interpret these important observations.

When iron ore is crushed and split into lump and fines components, there are systematic differences between the lump and fines grades. Generally the lump product is richer in iron and lower in the other minerals, compared to the fines product. The grade differences between lump and fines, together with the lump percentage, are referred to as the ælump algorithmÆ. Mine estimates of grade, based on exploration or blasthole drilling, relate to head grade. The ælump algorithmÆ predicts lump and fines product grades from the head grade. This knowledge is important when developing mine plans. Different ore types can be expected to have systematically different lump algorithms. Previously, lump algorithms for specific ore types have been estimated by running the crusher with a single ore type over a sample period. This method is costly, interferes with production, and yields results of limited statistical power. It has been found that weighted-least-squares (WLS) multiple regression can be used to ascribe lump algorithms to different ore types, provided sample periods have sufficiently varied ore type mixes. This study discusses the method and its application to the analysis of Mining Area C crusher production records to estimate the separate lump algorithms, which could be applied to the different ore types. The analysis has enabled the set up of lump algorithms in the production system, to improve the grade control of lump and fines product. Some other relevant applications of the WLS multiple regression approach are also considered.

"In this article research on the mineralogical characteristics and beneficiation process for a copper molybdenum deposits in Heilongjiang province of China has been carried out. Chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by SCANning electron microscopy (QEMSCAN) were conducted on samples. The bulk analysis results showed that: (1) Comprehensive recovery and separation of molybdenum & copper minerals was feasible by the flowsheet of first copper-molybdenum mixed flotation after grinding the ore samples to 61.88% -74µm and then separation flotation of copper and molybdenum after regrinding the Cu-Mo mixed concentrate to 83.26% -38 µm. The results highlight relationship between mineralogical characteristics of ore and comprehensive benefication method. (2) the combination of "" Sodium sulphide and sodium thioglycolate "" reagents are effective inhibitors of copper-molybdenum mixed concentrate, their selectivity performance is better than that of single reagent. Good flotation indexes were gained that might be directive experience to similar cases. KEYWORDS Mineralogical characteristics; molybdenite; chalcopyrite; flotation separation; inhibitor INTRODUCTION Copper and molybdenum metals are widely used in the field of metallurgy, aerospace, national defence, etc. Copper –molybdenum sulphide ore is an important source of copper and molybdenum metals. At present flotation is still the preferred methods to deal with the copper-molybdenum sulphide minerals (Yin, Z., Sun, W.et al. 2017; Ansari, A., & Pawlik, M. 2007; Hirajima, T., Miki, et al. 2017). Copper and molybdenum sulphide ores usually have the similarly good nature floatability(Miki, H., Matsuoka, et al. 2017), meanwhile most molybdenum sulphide ore has tiny grained-size(Castro, S., & Laskowski, J. S. 2015.) and closed relationship with other sulphide and gangue minerals which result in the coper and molybdenum separation problem. Base on the nature of the ore and flotation properties of the individual minerals contained in the ore, there are two methods are usually used to deal with the copper – molybdenum ore, including bulk molybdenum/copper flotation followed by separation of copper and molybdenum minerals, sequential molybdenum/ copper flotation(Liu, G. Y., Lu, et al. 2012). The latter method has the shortcoming of hard to activate the depressed copper minerals in the previous molybdenum flotation process, which may result in a large loss of the copper from concentrate, this disadvantage would avoid while adopting the former method. bulk flotation followed by separation process is to get the copper-molybdenum concentrate from raw ore first then separate flotation the molybdenum and copper minerals, benefit from the excellent floatability of both molybdenum and copper minerals ( Malhotra, D., Rowe, R. M., & Bhasin, A. K. 1986; Cao, Z., Yue, et al. 2017 ), it really easy to obtain the mixed concentrate. In order to get the high quality copper and molybdenum concentrate, the key technologies and difficulties are to realize the separation of the copper and molybdenum minerals which have the very similar natural floatability (Raghavan, S., & Hsu, L. L. 2015; Nakhaei, F. 2014)."

The enthalpy of immersion is the heat change arising from the replacement of the solid-gas interface with the solid-liquid interface when a solid surface is immersed in a liquid. Although immersion calorimetry has been established as a valuable and reliable means of determining solid surface properties such as wettability, it has seldom been applied in mineral processing research. In this study, precision solution calorimetry was employed to measure the enthalpies of immersion of different minerals in water. The enthalpies of immersion were then related to the first-order flotation rate constant as determined by the microflotation technique. The same measurements were also made on sulphide minerals whose surfaces were modified to different degrees of hydrophobicity using different percentage coverages of amyl xanthate collector. The enthalpy of immersion technique was capable of distinguishing and ranking minerals according to their wettability. All mineral types and collector-treated minerals conformed to the same relationship that was found between the enthalpy of immersion and the flotation rate constant. This conformed, empirically, to a power law equation. As the enthalpy of immersion decreased, there were large increases in flotation response for very small changes in hydrophobicity. In addition, a critical enthalpy of immersion (CEI) was found, above which no flotation could occur. The scatter in the data points could be corrected for by adjusting the rate constant using the density of the minerals to produce a robust relationship between the rate constant and enthalpy of immersion. These results have shown that the enthalpy of immersion is able to indicate both the natural mineral hydrophobicity and the extent to which collectors can render a mineral hydrophobic. This technique has considerable potential to be used as a sensitive and accurate measure of mineral surface wettability in order to predict flotation performance.

"MANGOTE Surface oxidizied mine is a gold-bearing deposit in Congo's Mai-Ndombe Province. In the past decades, the ore has been exploited in a crude way by local farmers, which directly causes the severe processing difficulty and lack of economy of cyanide leaching. Hunan Research Institute for Non-ferrous metals (HRIM) is currently investigating options to recover gold through understanding the mineralogical characteristics of MANGOTE surface oxidized ore. Chemical analysis , X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by SCANing electron microscopy (QEMSCAN ) were conducted on samples from mine site. The bulk analysis results showed that gold separation of gold from gangue minerals was feasible after grinding the ore samples to 86.53% -74µm and adjusting the pulp specific weight at 100g/L, and gravity separation was conducted with using spiral chute after grading of fine particles. The research results highlight relationship between mineralogical characteristics of abandoned ore and economy of comprehensive utilization that might be directive experience to similar cases. INTRODUCTION The occurrence state of gold in natural gold minerals determines the basic recovery and recovery effect of gold(Komnitsas, C., & Pooley, F. D. 1989). The occurrence of gold in the ore refers to the form of gold in the ore.Generally the existing state of gold can be divided into four major categories according to the viewpoint of the dispersion system: independent minerals and gold, a coarse dispersed system;colloidal gold, a colloidal dispersion; solid solution gold, is atomic ion dispersion; adsorptive gold, according to the adsorbed particle is the micelle or ion, respectively is a colloidal dispersion or ion dispersion(Mao, S. D., & Yang, R. S. 2009; Liu, J. THE self-potential or spontaneous polarization method is one of the oldest in the field of electrical exploration. When applied in prospecting for ore bodies, it is one of the most rapid and inexpensive means of locating indications of ore bodies at shallow depth. Usually, the procedure is to survey the equipotential lines of the electrical field that is generated by the electrochemical activity of the ore near the ground-water level, and to localize the so-called negative centers or points of greatest negative anomaly. Another field procedure involves the measurement of potential differences along potential profiles, generally laid out at right angles to the assumed strike. Again, in such survey, the basis for establishing the presence of ore is the location of negative potential anomalies. The earlier writers on the subject, notably Schlumberger1 and R. G. Wells,2 did much to clarify the fundamental electrochemical phenomena involved. Interpretation of the field data, however, remained largely qualitative. In 1925, A. Petrovsky3 analyzed the relation between the shape of the potential anomaly curve and size and depth of an ore body by assuming the subsurface body to be a polarized sphere.4 Along similar lines of approach, Edge and Laby5 considered the ore body a dipping sheet with limited extent in the direction of strike, while Poldini6 based the theory on the assumption of a dipping bar. I.-ORE BODY CONSIDERED AS DIPOLE upon these earlier investigations and attempts, on the basis of the potential distribution of a polarized bar, to indicate certain characteristics of the anomaly curve that make possible the determination of depth, size and dip of a subsurface body. THE SPONTANEOUS POLARIZATION FIELD SET UP BY AN ORE BODY If a sulphide ore body is subjected to oxidation varying in degree in its upper and lower parts according to the difference in the concentration of oxygen within the surrounding medium, an electrical potential field is set up. The form and distribution of this field will be investigated herein with special reference to its components on the earth's surface. Under the simplifying assumption that the ore body may be considered as a dipole with the point sources QI and Q2 situated at its upper and lower ends (Fig. I), the potential of the spontaneous polarization at point P is given by the following equation:

ASH in coal has always been regarded as an undesirable substance, as the heat content of a coal decreases in direct proportion to its ash content. It represents so much inert material that has to be transported, handled when the coal is burned, and finally disposed of. W. R. Roberts, in an address before the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, on Sept. 29, 1925, said that on an annual output of five hundred million tons of coal, a reduction of 3 per cent. of ash means fifteen million tons of refuse and a decrease of $30,000,000 in freight charges. Ash also often prevents efficient utilization of the coal through the formation of clinker caused by the melting of the ash constituents when subjected to heat. The mineral constituents of coal may be of such nature as to make the coal unsuited for specific uses, as for instance, high-sulfur coal for making metallurgical coke. While the usual proximate analysis of coal gives the amount of ash, it gives no information as to the nature and composition of the ash nor of the mineral constituents from which the ash is produced. For the efficient washing of coal to remove ash-forming constituents it is desirable to know the composition and distribution of the ash-forming constituents. Obviously such information is also desirable for the most efficient utilization of coal.

Blebs of solid bitumen from the Magmont West orebody of the Viburnum Trend were examined and analyzed in an attempt to relate hydrocarbon distribution and origin to ore genesis. The bitumen was calculated to be approximately 48 to 63 percent aliphatic and is considered to be a polymerized normal crude oil. Polymerization, which was probably caused by water-washing, hardened the bleb surfaces and appears to have "frozen" the blebs during primary migration from local source beds. Comparison of the bitumen to kerogen in local shaly partings strongly Indicates that the oil was derived locally. The polymerized oil blebs are considered to have been derived from a type II (marine) kerogen. Textural analyses indicate that oil migration occurred after lead-zinc mineralization and at temperatures that exceed normal ancient or present geothermal gradients. The following sequence of events is postulated for the Magmont West orebody: 1 Generation of hydrogen sulfide during diagenesis of a normal organic-rich carbonate sequence. 2 Introduction of pulses of hot, metal-rich fluids that resulted in: a Lead-zinc mineralization by the following reaction: Me++ + H2S ? MeS + 2H+ b Solution of carbonates by excess acid produced during the above reaction. c Brecciation of host rock in some cases. 3 Passages of the pulse resulted in: a Carbonate buffering of fluid system to more alkaline conditions. b Precipitation of dolomite c Slight temperature drop. 4 Eventually the high temperatures Introduced by heated brine caused oil generation and initiated primary migration. 5 Water-washing and mild biodegradation altered the hydrocarbon blebs to their present composition.

FOR the purposes of this discussion, the direct gasification of coal means the of hydrogen and carbon monoxide by the well-known water-gas reaction. Chemicals or other synthetic products may be made from these constituents of the gas and under such circumstances the gas is called synthesis gas. Or, if the same gas is used as a fuel, it is called blue gas or water gas. This type of gas has usually been made from coke, especially in this country, and has been used both for fuel purposes and for manufacture of chemicals. Recently, natural gas has gained the ascendancy as a source of synthesis gas for manufacture of chemicals because of its relative cheapness. As natural gas becomes less readily available and more expensive, coal will take its place as a raw material for the preparation of synthesis gas. This substitution will probably take the form of direct gasification of the coal rather than the present two-step procedure of carbonization of the coal followed by gasification of the coke. The chief reason for this probability is the intensive research now being carried on by several organizations to develop successful and economical processes for the direct gasification of coal, which is a considerably cheaper fuel than coke. In the following pages an attempt has been made to predict the chemicals that will result from this future production of synthesis gas by the direct gasification of coal. CHEMICAL REACTIONS OF SYNTHESIS GAS Given the proper conditions, there are many chemical reactions leading to production of useful products that can be carried out with this mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. These many reactions may be grouped into three classes: (1) interaction of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, possibly with addition of other reactants; (2) reaction of hydrogen with various substances; (3) reaction of carbon monoxide with various substances. Thus sometimes hydrogen and carbon monoxide are utilized together in the same chemical reaction while in other instances only the hydrogen or only the carbon monoxide is required as a reactant. Fortunately, practical methods are available for securing either hydrogen or carbon monoxide from synthesis gas, some of which are also applicable for changing the ratio of these two constituents in the gas when that is desirable.

THIS paper relates to an area of more than 5,000 square miles in the Northwest Territories extending north from Great Slave lake and including-the Yellowknife, Beaulieu River and Gordon lake areas. Within the last three years much interest in the area has been created by the discovery of remarkably rich gold-bearing veins and the realization that thousands of square miles of unprospected ground are underlain by rocks like those in which the veins have been found. Probably there were more prospectors in this area in 1938 than in any other part of Canada. The area lies 650 miles north of Edmonton, and 425 miles north of the terminus of the Northern Alberta railway at Waterways, Alberta. The Athabaska and Slave rivers provide an excellent water route from Waterways to Great Slave lake for large oil and wood burning boats and barges which operate from the latter part of May to October. The only portage is around a 16-mile stretch of rapids on the Slave river between Fort Fitzgerald and Fort Smith. The town of Yellowknife, on the north side of Great Slave lake, has sprung into existence during the past year and is the centre for distribution of supplies for the Yellowknife-Beaulieu region. The Con-Rycon and Negus gold mines, which came into production in September, 1938, and February, 1939, respectively, lie about two miles south of the townsite. Excellent airplane service is available from Edmonton to Yellowknife and from Yellowknife to all parts of the area. The prospector and mining operator have come to rely almost entirely on the airplane for supplies and for the transportation of personnel, camp equipment, and canoes from Yellowknife to localities selected for intensive prospecting.

CERTAIN observations from the field and laboratory suggest the need for recasting some of our ideas about gypsum as a rock-forming mineral and in relation to supplies for industrial use. Until about 25 years ago, the use of gypsum was confined almost entirely to agriculture. During the past quarter century, though, its usefulness has been greatly developed, particularly in the building trades, which now absorb most of the gypsum produced. In 1919, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, the output of crude gypsum was 2,240,163 tons, a gain of 912 per cent. in 25 years. About one-half of this production was mined in New York, Ohio, and Michigan, where the proved supplies can hardly be regarded as over-large when viewed in relation to the rapid expansion of industrial requirements. The occurrence of gypsum in the United States is treated by R. W. Stone and others.1 The deposits of Canada are described by L. H. Cole.2 Several states, including Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Michigan, and New York, have had special surveys made their of gypsum deposits, but the reports, as a rule, refer to conditions as they existed from 15 to 20 years ago.
