The purpose of this research is to determine (I) the efficiency of small banks of enriched gar driven by methane in displacing oil from a porous medium and (2) the effects of variation in bank size and composition of that efficiency. Most of the experiments were conducted in a sand-packed tube 20-ft long and 1/2-in. in diameter. The hydrocarbon system generally used was methane, butane and decane at 2,500 psia and 160°F. The results of these experiments indicate that, in the regions contacted by the gas, a small bank of an oil-miscible gas driven by methane can displace all of the oil in a piston-like manner. If the enriched gas is of such composition as to remain immiscible with the oil, displacement of oil is less efficient than for the miscible case, and the gas bank travels through the sand with a velocity less than that of the driving gas. These data along with theories discussed imply that smaller banks and less total gas are required when the enriched gas and oil are miscible. INTRODUCTION Widespread application of enriched-gas drive to the recovery of oil rests upon a key factor — the use of limited quantities, or "banks", of enriched gas. At the present time, the value of liquefied petroleum gas or other enriching agents discourages their use in a continuous injection technique, or even in a large bank, except in a few isolated reservoirs. If small banks of enriched gas driven by methane were as effective in displacing oil as is continuous injection, the enriched-gas drive process might be applied to a larger number of reservoirs. Previous research on the mechanics of the enriched-gas drive process reported by Stone and Crurnpl and by Kehn, Pyndus and Gaskell has utilized continuous injection of enriched gas. This work has shown that two types of displacements occur. With gases containing sufficient intermediates. the oil is displaced misciblv and complete recovery is obtained from the regions swept. When gases are used which contain insufficient intermediate hydrocarbon for miscible displacement, oil is displaced immiscibly. In the latter type, selective solution of the intermediate hydrocarbons causes a swelling and reduction in viscosity of the oil and leads to an increased recovery over that obtained by dry-gas (methane) drive. The size of the enriched-gas bank necessary for efficient displacement of oil is determined by those factors which cause deterioration of the bank. A differentiation may be made between those factors which operate on a microscopic scale and those which act on a macroscopic scale. On the smaller scale, the enriched gas mixes in the direction of flow by diffusion and convection with the fluids immediately preceding and following it. On the larger scale, the gas may by-pass the oil by flowing through permeable streaks, by overriding the oil because of density difference, or by fingering because of unfavorable viscosity ratios. In such cases, the enriching material tends to mix with the oil both laterally and in the direction of flow. The increase in effective area available for diffusion and dispersion of the enriching components leads to a faster degradation of the bank and a need for a larger bank than is necessary for those cases in which no by-passing occurs. The effects of such macroscopic factors in the deterioration of enriched-gas banks have been reported in a separate paper by Blackwell, Terry and Rayne. The present study was confined to the factors which operate on the smaller scale, in particular to the behavior of banks of enriched gas in sands uniformly swept by the gas. Experiments were designed to answer the following questions. 1. Can small banks of enriched gas driven by methane be used to secure oil recoveries comparable to those obtained by continuous injection of enriched gas? 2. What is the optimum bank size (the minimum bank size necessary to obtain a recovery comparable to that obtained by continuous injection of the same enriched gas)? 3. How many total pore volumes of gas must be injected to obtain the maximum recovery when the optimum bank size is used? 4. What is the effect of varying the number of enriching components in a gas bank? This report describes the experimental investigations and discusses the results in terms of their significance to reservoir behavior.

When oil is displaced from a horizontal formation by another fluid of lower density, the latter tends to override the former in the shape of a tongue owing to gravity segregation. This gravity tongue has an adverse influence on the oil recovery. If the fluids are miscible, diffusion (mixing) takes place at the interfacial boundary of the gravity tongue. This mixing should have a favorable effect on oil recovery. The report describes a laboratory study of the magnitude of the mixing zone under various conditions, so as to assess the effect of diffusion on oil recovery both in laboratory experiments and under actual field conditions. The technique used enables visual observation and measurement of the size of the mixing zone in transparent glass-powder packs. The results show that in experiments in small models and cores the width of the mixing zone may well be of the same order of magnitude as the height of the model. In such cases oil recovery is favorably affected by mixing. It can further be concluded that, under conditions prevailing in the field, mixing of the injected fluid with reservoir oil is equal to that caused by molecular diffusion alone, eddy-mixing not taking place to any appreciable extent. A simple calculation, then, shows that molecular diffusion is too small for a beneficial effect to be expected from the injection of miscible fluids in horizontal or nearly horizontal reservoirs unless pay zones are thin. INTRODUCTION This paper gives results of experiments made on the mixing which occurs when a miscible displacement is carried out in a horizontal reservoir. This mixing takes place at the interfacial boundary of the gravity tongue formed when the lighter injected fluid overrides the oil present in the reservoir. The object of the experiments was to simulate the field case where, for example, propane with a viscosity of 0.075 cp under reservoir conditions displaces an oil of viscosity 0.6 cp. In the experiments the lighter fluid had a viscosity of about 1 cp and the heavier one a viscosity of about 8 cp, so as to obtain the same viscosity ratio. In order to enable the results to be compared with those published in the literature, a set of experiments with viscosity ratio equal to one was also performed. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The technique developed for the purpose enables the width of the mixing zone to be studied as a function of time and place. A glass-powder pack is saturated with a water-glycerine mixture of suitable viscosity, which represents the reservoir fluid. The pack is then rendered transparent by dissolving sufficient ammonium thiocyanate in the mixture to obtain a solution with a refractive index matching that of the glass powder. Alkaline water to which phenol-phthalein has been added is used as the lighter and less-viscous displacing fluid. In those places where mixing or diffusion of the two liquids occurs, the slightly acidic ammonium-thiocyanate solution neutralizes the alkali in the water, and the glass pack shows up white against the red-colored invading water. If a black cloth is hung over the back of the apparatus, the transparent part of the glass pack appears black. In this way the position of the two phases and the transition zone between them is clearly visible, as shown in Fig. 1 (where the red-colored invading water is the grey-shaded zone lying uppermost). In all experiments the amount of alkali in the water was chosen such that the upper contour corresponded to a concentration of 5 per cent of the dense liquid. The lower contour is determined by the size of the glass grains and the thickness of the pack and, consequently, varies from experiment to experiment. Corresponding concentrations of the dense liquid range from about 97 per cent for packs of small grain size (permeability = 1 darcy) to about 95 per cent for those with large grains

Laboratory experiments on the reverse combustion of tar sands in a linear adiabatic system have shown that a highly upgraded oil can be produced from an exceedingly viscous, immobile oil. The dependence on the air-injection rate of peak temperature, combustion-zone velocity, oil recovery, air-oil ratio, residual coke and oil, fuel burned and distribution of product gases is shown graphically. Eflects of initial temperature, oxygen concentration, oil saturation and heat loss are discussed. Experiments bearing on the coking properties of heavy oils are mentioned and some results exhibited. Field application of the process hinges on the existence of adequate air permeability and the rate of reaction under reservoir conditions. INTRODUCTION It has been established that oil can be recovered from underground reservoirs by means of at least two fundamentally distinct methods involving in situ combustion of a certain fraction of the oil. Characteristic of both of these known methods is the production of oil from one or more wells by means of hot gases formed when a high-temperature reaction zone is advanced through the reservoir. In both cases, the reaction zone is created by heating certain of the wells to a sufficiently high temperature prior to the introduction of air, and the zone is maintained and advanced through the reservoir by appropriate control of the air-injection rate. In the first of these methods, which is called "forward combustion",' the combustion zone advances in a direction which is generally the same as that of the air flow; whereas in the second method, "reverse combustion",' the combustion zone moves in a direction generally opposite to that of the air flow. Forward combustion, on the one hand, is an ideal combustion process in the sense that a minimum of the most undesirable fraction of the oil is consumed as fuel in the form of coke, a clean sand is left behind and generated heat is used as efficiently as possible. However, the applicability of forward combustion is limited. Since the products of combustion, vaporized oil and connate water must flow into relatively cold regions of the reservoir, there is an upper limit on the viscosity of oil which can be moved by this process in a practical and economical fashion.' On the other hand, it is characteristic of reverse combustion that the vaporized oil and water together with the products of combustion are produced through sand which is already hot and has had its mobile liquid content eliminated. This means there is no upper limit on oil viscosity; indeed, the oil may be an entirely immobile semi-solid. However, fuel for the process is an intermediate fraction of the original oil, and the most undesirable fraction remains on the sand surface as a substantial deposit of coke. Since this coked material is not burned during reverse combustion, it represents energy which is available for the production of oil but is not used for this purpose. It follows that one can expect economics to be somewhat less attractive with reverse combustion than with forward combustion. Nevertheless, it is a process which is designed for reservoirs where forward combustion is impossible and, as such, has become a subject of experimental and theoretical investigation. In this paper, only experiments made with tar sands are discussed. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCESS We proceed, then, to consider the process of reverse combustion in greater detail. Fig. 1 illustrates a temperature profile defining a combustion zone which moves from right to left when air flows from left to right. In Zone 1, the temperature is the initial reservoir temperature, and the tar sand is as yet unaltered. This statement must be modified to the extent that physical properties of the oil may be changed by low-temperature oxidation at reservoir temperature. As air passes into Zone 2, which has been warmed by conduction, it assists in vaporization of the very light ends (if there are any), and oxidation occurs at a significant rate. In this region, there is almost no production of carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide because predominantly addition-type reactions take place with the formation of oxygenated compounds such as aldehydes and acids together with water. I would like to congratulate the authors on an interesting paper and, in particular, on their justification of the use of superposition in treating gas wells. They state, however, that no theory has previously been developed lor treating the variable rate drawdown case. In a paper published a few years ago by my colleagues and myself, a method is described which allows a constant rate drawdown curve to be derived for any well. regardless of real rate variations. This method has the great advantage that it is not necessary to make any assumptions regarding the form or uniformity of the reservoir, and the derivation suggested by the present authors is simply an idealized case of our more general treatment. In the light of several years' experience in the derivation of constant rate drawdown curves: I would like to point out that the method proposed by Odeh and Jones may lead to confusing answers, particularly if applied over an appreciable time interval. The reason is that, if pressures are measured when a well is flowing, non-linearities in plots like Figs. 1 and 2 can arise due to either (1) changes in the skin factor with time and/or flow rate, or (2) an inhomogeneous reservoir. Separation of these two effects is only possible if some of the pressures used in the analysis are measured when the well flow rate is 0 or, in other words. during brief shut-in periods. One of the more important problems to be solved in designing a miscible flood is related to the size of the solvent bank used. Size of the bank may be critical to economic success. Too large a bank loses money; too small a bank may deteriorate and fail to maintain the miscibility needed for high recovery. An important factor in deterioration of a small bank is permeability channeling. In a highly stratified reservoir, solvent speeds ahead in the more permeable zones and mixes laterally with fluids bypassed in adjacent, low-permeability strata. Numerical solutions have been obtained .for the differential equations that describe the movement of a slug through a two-layer system in which mixing occurs both in the direction of flow and transversely. The solvent slug is assumed to have the same density and viscosity as the resident fluid and the pushing fluid. These solutions have been verified by comparing them with similar concentration profiles obtained in the laboratory in a 36-ft stratified model packed with glass beads. The theoretical study revealed that when the dominant mechanism causing a bank to fail is lateral mixing the bank size needed for a given recovery may increase with length rather than decreasing as the square root of reservoir length, as suggested by one-dimensional mixing theory. From a comprehensive examination of the variables, a generalized correlation is developed that relates strata thicknesses, bank size, fluid velocity, mixing coefficients, system length and simple solvent-resident fluid phase behavior to the area miscibly swept. INTRODUCTION Miscible displacement, or solvent flooding, continues to receive widespread attention as a method for increasing oil recovery over that possible in conventional gas-drive or waterdrive projects. A basic economic requirement in the application of such processes is the use of as little solvent as possible. A basic physical requirement is that enough solvent be used to maintain miscibility. Economics places an upper limit on the size of a solvent slug, and physical considerations establish a lower limit. Consequently, the practicality of any given miscible process requires that the economic limit be greater than the lower limit imposed by physical requirements. Procedures exist for determining the economic limit; however, procedures for determining realistic minimum bank sizes exist for only special reservoir situations. In the past, bank size has usually been selected on the assumption of a piston-like displacement for which only longitudinal mixing is important. This assumption leads to the favorable conclusion that bank size, expressed as per cent of pore volume, is inversely proportional to the square root of length. Collins considered the problem of transverse mixing of solvent with fluids in bypassed zones with the assumptions that no forward mixing occurs and that the concentration is uniform in the permeable stratum of interest. 1 Lauwerier considered a mathematically similar problem in thermal recovery operations.2 Their work suggests the much less favorable conclusion that bank size could be directly proportional to the length or even higher powers of the length. This paper considers the physical behavior of a small solvent bank as it moves through a real reservoir, without imposing many of the restrictive assumptions of past treatments. To facilitate mathematical description, an idealized, two-layer model that permits mixing both laterally and in the direction of flow will be considered. A calculation procedure for solving the descriptive equations will be developed for a displacement involving fluids of equal density and viscosity. In addition, laboratory experiments designed to check the computational results will be described, and the coincidence of calculated and observed results will be discussed. Gas cycling is generally considered a much less efficient oil recovery mechanism than water flooding. HOWever, recoveries from some fields have been exceptionally high as a result of gas cycling. Recovery from the Pick-ton field, for example, was calculated to be 73.5 perceni of the stock-tank oil originally in place. In evaluating pressure maintenance projects, determining how much of the recovery is due to displacement by gas and determining how much is due to vaporization of the imrnohile oil in the flow path of the cycled gas is very difficrilt. Even though most of the oil is recovered by displacetr~ent, the success of a project may depend on the amount of oil vaporized. A limited number of experiments have heen performed with a rotating model oil reservoir that simulates gas cycling operations and allows a separation of the oil from, tile free gas flowing into the laboratory wellbore at reservoir conditions, thus revealing which is displaced oil and which is vaporized oil. It Iras been determined that the amount of varporizatio'n is .significant if proper conditions exist These experiments show that oil vaporization depends on pressure, temperature, volatility of the oil and amount of gas cycled. Increases in each of these conditions increase the volume of oil vaporized. Data from six experiments affecting vaporization are presented to illustrate reservoir condition that range from favorable to unfavorable. 111 these eaperitnenis recovery by vaporization ranged from 73.6 to 15.3 percent of /he immobile oil (oil not produced by gas displacerrlt). INTRODUCTION Between 1930 and 1950, gas cycling was a popular. oil recovery practice. especially for the deeper reservoirs. Later, with many case history-type studies published for both gas cycling and waterflooding, it was generally believed that waterflooding was far superior to gas cycling, even when gas cycling was conducted as a primary production procedure by complete pressure maintenance. A good example illustrating the advantage of water-flooding over gas cycling is given in a paper by Matthews' on the South Burbank unit where gas injection was followed by waterflooding. The author concluded in part that "Early application of water injection, without the intervening period of gas injection, would have recovered as much total oil as ultimately will be recovered by waterflooding following the gas injection, and total operating life would have been shortened". This appears to be a logical conclusion. However, it should not be applied to all fields. Pressure maintenance with gas in the Pickton field, as reported by McGraw and Lohec;' will result in a much larger percentage of oil recovery than was obtained in the South Burbank unit. The great success in the Pickton field resulted partly from vaporization of the immobile oil in the flow path of the cycled gas. The amount of vaporization is related to the following conditions: volatility of the oil as reflected by the APT gravity of the stock-tank oil; reservoir temperature; reservoir pressure during gas cycling; and the amount of gas cycled. Therefore, the U. S. Bureau of Mines is investigating these effects on vaporization in a research project using a model oil reservoir. Three different stock-tank oils having 22, 35 and 45" API gravities are being used as base stock to synthesize reservoir oils. Experiments are being performcd to determine vaporization at 100, 175 and 250F and at 1,100, 2,600 and 4,100 psia. This is a progress report showing the results from six experiments. Other Bureau of Mines reports"- concerning vaporization are listed. LABORATORY EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURES The equipment ' consists of an internally chromium-plated steel tube packed with finely sifted Wilcox sand. The tube is approximately 44 in. long and has an ID of 13/4 in. The sand section contains approximately 570 ml of voids, has a porosity of 32 percent, and a permeability to air of 4.3 darcies. A unique feature of the laboratory reservoir (Fig. 1) permits the tube part to rotate at 1 rpm while the outlet and inlet heads are held stationary. The outlet end contains diametrically opposed windows to permit observatlon of the flowing fluids, and two valves, one on the top and the other at the bottom. Oil and free gas. when being produced simultaneously, can be separated by manipulating the two valves to keep a gas-oil interface in view through the windows. Thus, only gas is produced through the top valve and only oil flows through the bottom valve. The laboratory equipment was designed to study vaporization. Therefore, a uniform reservoir was made using dry sifted sand as opposcd to using a consolidated sand core with interstitial water. Furthermore. the reservoir was tilted to minimize fingering of gas. The behavior of the reverse-combustion process in a linear adiabatic system is theoretically investigated by means of an idealized physical model. T his model is described by a pair of non-linear equations involving heat and mass transfer which are coupled by a concentration-dependent reaction-rate function of the Ar-rhenius type. The differential equations governing the quasi steady-state temperature and concentration distributions are approximately solved by using either physical or mathematical simplifications. It is shown that the reverse -combustion process can be mechanistically described by simple physical models whose behavior equations can be solved formally. It is further demonstrated that the derived reverse-combustion equations can be solved numerically within the error limits for the experimental data. The theoretically predicted peak temperature-flux-velocity relationship exhibits reasonable agreement with experimental data obtained from Athabasca tar sand. The principal contribution of this work lies in its usefulness as a starting point for developing a more comprehensive theory. A description of the vaporization-coking process must be obtained; then, the theory must be extended to three dimensions to include geometrical effects and heat losses. INTRODUCTION In another paper,'" he physical processes visualized as occurring during reverse combustion have been described. In this paper, the extent to which an elementary theory can account for experimental observations is determined. Theoretical results that can be used to estimate some of the behavior characteristics of importance to this process are also presented. Since it is not possible to include all the features of the combustion mechanism of which we are currently aware, the mathematical formulation refers to the highly idealized system developed herein. This simplified physical model is based on the simultaneous transfer of mass and heat accompanied by a chemical reaction: it is described mathematically by a pair of coupled, nonlinear differential equations. Similar sets of equations have been studied extensively in the field of flame propagation; an excellent review of these investigations has been published by Evans.1 FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM It will be recalled that the experiments are performed with a thin-walled cylindrical tube that is uniformly packed with sand and oil. The system is maintained substantially adiabatic by means of heat supplied externally in such a way that the radial temperature gradient in any plane normal to the axis of the tube approaches zero. Initially, the tube is at ambient temperature, except at one end where it is rapidly heated to a predetermined temperature. When the prescribed temperature is achieved, air is caused to flow into the cold end of the tube. As the oxygen in the air stream contacts the hot oil, a localized exothermic reaction takes place. The generated heat is conducted and convected away from the reaction zone so that definite temperature and concentration profiles are rapidly established and move uniformly in a direction opposite to that of the air flow (Fig. 1). As a consequence of this mode of oxidation, all of the oxygen in the air is consumed; then, the remaining nitrogen and the gaseous combustion products sweep out all vaporized hydrocarbons and leave an immobile hydrocarbon-coke on the sand.

Oil and .gas reservoirs exist under pressure within the pore spaces of rock structures or traps. Wells are drilled to produce these reservoirs. Under primary operation, the natural energy of expanding fluids in and adjacent to the reservoir forces or drives oil and gas to the wells. There are three basic sources of energy: dissolved gas, water, and gas cap. Typical recovery by primary methods is only 10 to 25 per cent of the oil in place for the dissolved gas drive but is generally higher for the others. Secondary recovery involves the injection of water or gas to supplement natural energy, thereby increasing recovery over that obtainable by primary operation alone. In many cases ultimate recovery with secondary methods is 1.2 to 2.0 times the expected primary recovery. The type programme adaptable in a field depends on its 'primary performance and on certain reservoir characteristics. In the United States, application of secondary recovery methods is becoming increasingly important. About 22 per cent of United States oil production now comes from fields in which injection projects are operating. In 1953, nearly 1.4 million barrels of oil daily came from such fields, more than double the amount in the early 40's. Ultimate primary recovery from known pools is estimated at roughly 73 billion barrels. Secondary recovery projects already in operation will increase this to almost 80 billion, an increase of almost 10 per cent. Unitized secondary recovery projects have been very successful. From unitized projects alone, industry reserves of oil in the United States have been increased by 3 1/2 billion barrels. In Canada, secondary recovery has not been so wide spread mainly because D-3 reef reservoirs which have held the major reserves are under water drive. However, appreciable amounts of water are being injected in the Redwater D-3, Leduc D-2 and Joarcum Viking reservoirs, and gas in the Golden Spike D-3. In both countries, possible achievements in increased recovery through secondary recovery methods now in use and by new ones which may be developed through research and field trial are a challenge to the scientist and the industry.

The status of fossil fuel and secondary resource in metallurgy industry in China were reviewed, and conversion efficiency of fossil fuel, utilization technologies of secondary energy were studied. Fossil fuel, accounting for over 90% of energy structure in metallurgy industry, took in the highest flight in China, and a great deal of which was converted to secondary energy through the equipment of blast furnace and coke oven. These secondary energy which were mostly made of blast furnace gas(BFG), coke oven gas(COG) and Lindz Donawitz gas(LDG) occupied about 30% of total secondary energy. The way enhancing fossil fuel conversion efficiency, secondary resource recovery and the secondary energy such as BFG, COG, LDG utilization promoted to save fossil fuel was discussed in this paper. And efficient use of lower caloric value fuel was studied, such as preheating combustion air and fuel, generating electricity power etc. and regeneration purposes of high-caloric fuel was also researched, for producing hydrogen, methanol or direct reduction iron etc. The using model of secondary energy at iron and steel works was presented as fuel and chemical materials. The results suggest that utilization of these energy efficiently and reasonably could help to energy saving and environment protecting.

"Ongoing research is being conducted to evaluate secondary support performance in longwall ventilation entries. In a three-entry longwall gateroad, secondary supports are applied in the #2 entry to maintain a functional airway for the entirety of second panel mining. This airway represents a pathway for contaminated mine air to travel from the longwall tailgate to the mine bleeder system. The ground response curve concept may be used as a design basis for selection of appropriate secondary support in these ventilation entries. Two types of secondary supports are monitored for load and convergence in this project. These monitored supports are pumpable crib supports and interlocking wood crib supports. To evaluate the effect of support density, two installation patterns are monitored for each support type. Both a single-row, protected airway pattern and double-row, full entry support pattern are monitored for each support type. Load and displacement data is collected for all support patterns as second panel mining retreats past instrumentation sites. Data is collected for approximately 200-feet inby the second panel face or as long as safely possible. Load and convergence data collected will be used to calibrate numerical models that will simulate ground response curves for the #2 entry inby the second panel face.INTRODUCTIONWhen a bleeder ventilation system is used, the #2 entry of a three-entry longwall gateroad system is designed to function as a pathway for contaminated air from a longwall face to the bleeder system during second panel mining. The #2 entry is subject to substantial ground movement and loading during its function as an air course because it is a single entry between two longwall gobs. Secondary support is regularly applied in this entry to maintain air course functionality during second panel mining.Research on performance and design of secondary supports has been conducted extensively over the last 30 years (Barczak and Gearhart, 1993; Barczak and Gearhart, 1994; Mucho, Barczak, and Dolinar, 1999). The Bond ball mill grindability test is one of the most common metrics used in the mining industry for ore hardness measurements. The test is an important part of the Bond work index methodology for designing and measuring the efficiency of mineral grinding circuits. In spite of being called “Bond’s Law,” the work index equations are not a law of nature; but rather an empirically measured regression of a large data set collected by the Allis- Chalmers corporation in the period between 1930 and 1952. As a regression, it is valid within a specific “calibration space,” and great care is required when deviating the test procedures or observing results that are outside of that calibration space. This paper is a collected summary of other works by the Authors that describe feed sizes, product sizes, quality control checks, and other information about interpreting the test and using its results. Examples of adjustments that are sometimes required when using the test are: changing the test product (P80), and coping with a feed that is too fine to apply the “proper” feed preparation steps (such as is sometimes observed from HPGR or SAGDesign product testing). Related metrics, like the Morrell Mib value and Levin B value will be discussed, along with recommendations for their use on design projects. The intended audience is any user of laboratory work index test data.

Georgius Agricola in 1556 wrote De Re Metallica, one of the first and probably the most famous of mining reference works. In Book 1 he reflects rather elegantly on mining and miners. "Many persons hold the opinion that the metal industries are fortuitous and that the occupation is one of sordid toil, and altogether a kind of business requiring not so much skill as labour. But as for myself, when I reflect carefully upon its special points one by one, it appears to be far otherwise. For a miner must have the greatest skill in his work, that he may know first of all what mountain or hill, what valley or plain, can be prospected most profitably, or what he should leave alone; moreover, he must understand the veins, stringers, and seams in the rocks. Then he must be thoroughly familiar with the many and varied species of earths, juices, gems, stones, marbles, rocks, metals, and compounds. He must also have a complete knowledge of the method of making all underground works. Lastly, there are the various systems of assaying substances and of preparing them for smelting; and here again there are many altogether diverse methods. ... "Furthermore, there are many arts and sciences of which a miner should not be ignorant. First there is Philosophy, that he may discern the origin, cause, and nature of subterranean things; for then he will be able to dig out the veins easily and advantageously, and to obtain more abundant results from his mining. Secondly, there is Medicine, that he may be able to look after his diggers and other workmen, that they do not meet with those diseases to which they are more liable than work- men in other occupations, or if they do meet with them, that he himself may be able to heal them or may see that the doctors do so. Thirdly follows Astronomy, that he may know the divisions of the heavens and from them judge the direction of the veins. Fourthly, there is the science of Surveying that he may be able to estimate how deep a shaft should be sunk to reach the tunnel which is being driven to it, and to determine the limits and boundaries in these workings, especially in depth. HISTORIACAL INTRODUCTION Mineral processing has three principle branches, to quote Taggart, "Ore Dressing, which comprises the methods of separation of solids in inorganic crude by means which do not affect substantial chemical change; Extractive Metallurgy, which utilizes chemical reactions for separations of constituents from solids in inorganic crude; and, Fuel Technology, which employs both physical and chemical methods for separating and rearrangement of liquid gaseous and solid components in crude oil and natural gas, tar sands, shale oil, or coal." The scope of this handbook covers the first two classifications, that is, "ore dressing" and "extractive metallurgy," which have been combined in one term: "mineral processing." For a brief history of the development of mineral processing, one could well refer to the Introduction, Sec. I of the Handbook of Mineral Dressing by Taggart, Froth Flotation, Principles of Mineral Dressing by Gaudin, and the original Richard's Ore Dressing, volume No. 1, first published in 1903-1905. In these references and the references given in them a coverage of the history of "ore dressing" can be found and studied at the reader's leisure. For the history of extractive metallurgy as well as ore dressing, the bibliography in General References, taken from a History of Ex¬tractive Metallurgy by F. Habashi, will give a good background for those who are interested in more detail on the history of metallurgy in general. Mineral processing covers a very wide field as is illustrated by the topics discussed in Part II of this handbook and dates back to the early history of man which started with the production and use of native minerals such as gold, silver, copper, mercury, and meteoric iron which were washed or picked from deposits on the surface of the earth and worked because of their malleability. Later, melting was discovered and then it was possible to cast objects of these metals, excluding mercury. The discovery of a method for reducing the metal¬lic oxide probably was developed from melting fragments of oxides or roasted sulfides with charcoal, so that the native metal could be produced in simple blast furnaces such as are used today in rural parts of Spain, China, and elsewhere. INTRODUCTION The role of comminution and related unit operations in mineral processing applications is of major importance. This is especially true in terms of operating costs, since these unit operations represent the major fraction of the overall processing costs. Due to the broad scope and the large number of unit processes and machines involved, Section 3 is divided into five subsections. In Section 3A, General Aspects of Comminution, topics covered include history, terminology, particle¬size distributions, classes of comminution machines, testing and calcu¬lation procedures, and simulation and modeling. In Section 3B, Crush¬ing. the subjects include jaw crushers, gyratory crushers, cone crushers, hammermills, and impactors. The chapters of Section 3C, Grinding, cover aspects common to tumbling mills, ball mills, rod mills, autogenous mills, pebble mills, roller mills, fluid energy mills, other types of grinding machines, and grinding costs. Section 3D, Classification, coverage includes classification theory, hydrocyclones, and mechanical classifiers, and in Section 3E, Screening, the topics presented are classes of screens, selection of vibrating screens, sieve bend screens, and screening media. About five years after the Handbook was begun, Section 3 was unfortunately without an editor or contributors for over half of the chapters. A committee was then organized to expedite completion of the section. When this committee contacted the persons who had agreed to contribute to the section, it was found that many of them wished to resign from their earlier voluntary obligation to AIME. Therefore the committee had to find new contributors for these chap¬ters in addition to other chapters in Section 3. Since there had been no previous effort to locate contributors for Air Classification, Dust Collection, and Washing and Scrubbing, it was agreed to delete these subsections. In Section 3, equipment availability, capacity, and performance data from various manufacturers and users are provided for engineer¬ing use. Selected data from existing installations are also included. The machines that are being used in comminution, classification, and screening are described in detail, and drawings, photographs, and diagrams are presented to supplement the descriptive material. The editors thank and acknowledge the generous effort of the many contributors, some of whom were called upon five or more years after the Handbook was started. It is regretted that Fred C. Bond, who was a member of the committee formed to complete this section, was deceased before the section was finished. During the time that he worked with the committee, he contributed a great deal as an author and councilor.

THE time of the Section delegates was economized this year by providing the section reports in mimeo- graphed form, together with the reports of the officers and committees of the Institute, for their consideration on arrival. The meeting was called for Thursday forenoon and despite a certain amount of oratory managed to get through before all the luncheon was gone. In all, nine section delegates and one from the Iron and Steel Division attended and took part. One delegate, who had come many miles, got lost in the complication of the program and failed to attend. Six appointed dele- gates failed to attend and two sections neglected to make appointments.

TWENTY-TWO sections and all four of the divisions sent delegates to the annual meeting. They became so interested in the wide ranging dis6ussion of old and yet ever-new problems of Institute affairs that three instead of two sessions scheduled were necessary. Monday morning the meeting assembled with President Bassett presiding in the absence of President-elect Tally, who had been called to Baltimore by the serious illness of a brother. Thursday morning Vice-president Turner presided until Mr. Tally appeared after which the latter guided the sessions. Since reports from all of the active sections save one had been mimeographed and sent in advance to the delegates, detailed reports from each were dispensed with. The discussions dealt largely with membership problems, both local and national, with financing, speakers and programs, visits from national officers, and the conduct of the annual meeting. Many interesting and constructive suggestions were made and will be reported back to the sections by the delegates.

APPARENTLY unperturbed by any misgiving as to ill luck connected with the mystic number thirteen -for there were exactly that number of Directors on deck-the Board held two sessions on Tuesday, Feb. 21. , . Between the executive session at 5:15 p. m. and the general session at 8:30 p. m., 28 Section and Division delegates were wests of the Directors at dinner. Committee chair- " men and past officers brought the attendance to 75. Messrs. McAuliffe, Merica, Mudd and Tally had expressed their intention to be at the Directors' meeting, but each was prevented unavoidably at the last minute. At the executive session of the Board, J. V. W. Reynders was unanimously chosen to fill the unexpired term of Dr. Becket as Director: and Eugene McAuliffe in like " manner was selected to become Vice-president to fill the vacancy created hy Dr. Becket's assumption of the Presidency. Upon nomination of President Becket the following Executive Committee was appointed: Frederick M. Becket, chairman; Howard N. Eavenson, H. A. Guess, J. V. W. Reynders and William Wraith; and the Finance Committee was appointed as follows: Henry Krumb, chairman; Paul D. Merica and H. G. Moulton. Karl Eilers was reelected Treasurer and A. B. Parsons was re- elected Secretary to serve for the ensuing year, whereupon the executive session was adjourned.
