(hereafter referred to as NSENGI), Tenova HYL and Danieli have entered into an agreement to combine ENERGION DR technology into blast furnace technology and/or with syngas technologies. This new alliance will allow the three companies to combine research and development activities with their respective expertise in ENERGIRON DR technology, Blast Furnace technology and Syngas (by-pro gas and coal gasification) technology, with the ultimate objective to develop breakthrough iron making technologies and create such EPC projects. This paper introduces the concepts and the features of our breakthrough technologies of combining of ENERGIRON DR technology, Blast Furnace technology and Syngas technology.

"INTRODUCTIONThe idea of building a summit tunnel under the Brenner occurred to the Italian engineer Giovanni Qualizza as far back as 1847. But it was to be another 160 years to pass before a base tunnel was to be built.In 1971 the idea of a tunnel at the Brenner was dusted off again. The UIC, the International Union of Railways, commissioned a study for a new Brenner railway with a base tunnel. By 1989 three feasibility studies had been drawn up which formed the basis for further planning of the Brenner Base Tunnel.This was the start of the planning activities. In 1994, the European Union included the Berlin-Naples corridor in the list of priority projects. Ten years later, Austria and Italy signed a State Treaty to build the Brenner Base Tunnel. In that same year, what is today the BBT SE was established.PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThe Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) with a length of 55 km is the centrepiece of the Helsinki-Valletta Transeuropean Traffic Corridor from Finland to Southern Italy. The BBT tunnel system connects in the north with the Innsbruck station (Austria) as well as to the feeder routes in the Lower Inn Valley, and opens to the south with the projected new line in the direction of Verona (Italy). The tangible design efforts have been underway since 1999; the start of construction of the first section was in the year 2007. The project is financed by the Italian and Austrian governments (each 30 %), as well as by the European Union (40 %).From 2027 onwards the Brenner base tunnel, including the existing lines connected with it, will carry a daily average of 330 trains (approx. 80% cargo trains and 20% passenger trains)."

"I.-IntroductionAn attempt bas been made in this paper to provide a basis for appraisal of the future of the coal briquetting industry in Alberta by outlining the processes used for briquetting various ranks of coal, by specifying the requirements of a briquetted fuel, by indicating .the status of the industry in the United States, by giving developments in Western Canada, by assessing costs of processing, and by discussing briquetting researches in progress. Much of .the detail bas been omitted since this might mask, rather than reveal, the more important phases of the problem. Reference will be made when possible to published articles where many of the details can be obtained.It should be stated at the outset that, in the writer’s opinion, there are three possible developments in Alberta as regards briquetting: (a) an expansion of the briquetting of the fines of • non-coking and coking coals of semi-anthracite, and of low and medium volatile bituminous rank; (b) the processing of the fines of high-volatile C bituminous coals; and (c) the upgrading of the lower rank high-moisture sub-bituminous coals. Details of the chemical and physical properties of these coals can be obtained in publications of the Research Council of Alberta (1, 2), and of the Fuel Research Station, Bureau of Mines, Ottawa (3).Semi-anthracite and low and medium volatile bituminons coals occur in the mountain areas of Alberta, where, during the upthrust of the Rocky mountains, the coal beds served as the sliding surface. This resulted in the coals being; crushed and consequently they contain a h1gh percentage of fines. In some cases they are high in mineral matter and require to be cleaned before being processed. However, the cleaning of fine coal is both difficult and costly. Both the amount of fines present in the mine-run coal and the amount of mineral matter associated with the coal have increased through the introduction of mechanized mining and through the recovery of coal by stripping operations."

BURKE BAKER, Philadelphia, Pa. (written discussion*).-The small briquetting plant of the American Briquet Co., at 25th Street and Washington Ave., Philadelphia, was built primarily as a demonstration plant. Its output per hour is 4 tons of 2-oz. briquets, which have been retailed in the, vicinity during the year the plant has been in operation. They have proved very acceptable for use in ranges, heaters and grates in-home, and in steam heating plants in apartment houses and hotels. They have not been sold for power purposes, although satisfactory tests have been made in. this field. Anthracite silt is used and is shipped direct from breaker or washery, the only preparation it receives being the removal f excess moisture by means of a Ruggles-Coles rotary dryer. Care is taken, however, to purchase silt containing less than 18 per cent. ash. The method is covered by U. S. Patent No. 941454, issued to Chas. E. Hite, and is known as the "emulsion process." The binder, which is the, basis of the patent, is composed. of 0.5 per cent. cornstarch or wheat flour; 1 per cent. asphaltum or hydrolene, and 6.5 per cent. water, on the weight of coal dust. It is prepared in a tank equipped with paddle agitators and heated by steam jets. The starch and water are first made into a paste by being brought to the boiling point with live steam; the melted asphaltum is then introduced and thoroughly beaten into the paste by the agitators. This rapid stirring breaks. the hot asphaltum into minute particles which are distributed through the paste, producing a smooth chemical emulsion. This emulsion, when dried, is not soluble in water. The binder is mixed with the dry coal dust in a horizontal paddle mixer, 8 per cent. binder to the weight of coal being used. (written discussion*).-In Mr. Burke Baker's description of the process of the American Briquet Co., he speaks only of the attractive features, but every process which uses a compound or emulsified binder has certain undesirable features which must be considered. In making an emulsion, the success of which depends upon the introduction of the various ingredients at certain fixed temperatures and the complete intermixing of a soluble solution with an oil which has absolutely no affinity for it, considerable difficulty is found in keeping the various factors in strict accordance with the formula. To serve its purpose properly or, in other words, to be right for easy mixing with the coal, it should be of a certain predetermined density. Among the controlling factors of this ate the proportion of moisture contained and the temperature of the oil when introduced. If the latter is higher than intended, a greater proportion of moisture will be evaporated than is proper, and if the oil is not sufficiently hot the process of emulsification is retarded. These various factors can be controlled with more or less certainty where working in a laboratory or in a small experimental way, but when it is attempted on a large commercial scale, certain obstacles not otherwise apparent are likely to be encountered.

SINCE the publication of Prof. J. W. Richards's paper on The Schumacher Briquetting Process,2 this process has been in operation on a practical .scale in two plants in the United States, and a few notes on the results obtained may he of interest. An experimental plant, consisting of a toggle press and a hydraulic press, was installed at Johnstown, Pa., together with the necessary bins and other equipment, and an attempt was made to briquette a mixture of Mahoning fines and blast, furnace flue dust, in a ratio of 7 parts of ore to 3 parts of dust. The results were unsatisfactory, in that the briquettes made were not hard enough to stand the severe handling to which they were subjected in the various transferences necessary between the press and the furnace. The trouble was clue to several causes: First, the mechanical arrangement of the plant, which did not lend itself to a proper hardening and loading of the briquettes into the cars. Second, the irregular composition of the flue dust, as to both its lime and its fine coke contents. Third, the variability of the moisture content of the ore, and its viscosity when wet. Fourth, the ratio of fine ore to flue dust; that is, it was attempted to bind in too large a quantity of fine ore for the small amount of flue dust used. The first trouble could be overcome, and has been improved upon in the plant as it stands to-day. The second trouble was important, because of the small amount of dust used as a binder, and might have been easily removed by mixing the flue dust of the different furnaces, which, however, was never done. The third difficulty was more serious, but could have been partly solved, had it been possible to meet this along with the fourth difficulty, by decreasing the percentage of ore in the briquettes. It was proposed to do this, but it seems that the problem at the works in question is, primarily, to prepare Mahoning fines for reduction in the blast furnace, and only secondarily to use up the flue dust, and a solution along this line did not seem to be interesting.

l. INTRODUCTION. THE last few years have shown an increasing interest in the subject of beneficiating iron-ores -in all iron-producing countries. In the United States, this movement has been slower than in certain parts of Europe, for the obvious reason that the abundance and relative cheapness of the Lake Superior iron ores has hindered the development of enterprises for the preparation of low-grade ores. Gradually, however, conditions have changed. The world's consumption of iron is increasing enormously. Being in 1900 about 40,000,000 tons, in 1910 ii was already 60,000000; and there is no reason to doubt that for the near future the increase in iron-consumption will continue at the same rapid rate, especially with, the development of China, certain parts of Africa, and other regions which have hardly been touched as yet by modern industrialism. It is. therefore, not surprising that apprehension is felt that the known available iron-ore resources of the world are gradually being depleted. Signs of this feeling are the recent investigation, under the direction of the U. S. Geological Survey, of the iron-ore resources of the United States, and the estimate presented to the last International Geological Congress, at Stockholm, Sweden, of the iron-ore resources of the world. These investigations have emphasized the fact that the known high-grade ore-deposits are limited in extent, and will, at a not distant future, be exhausted, compelling the iron industry to depend for raw material on the enormous deposits of low-grade ores which are distributed over almost all the world. The discovery of new deposits of high-grade ore, in countries not yet thoroughly explored, will not materially change this prospect. Of course, the part which such new deposits will play in the future cannot be forecast. The difficulty and cost of transportation will probably exclude many of them from use at the present centers of the iron industry.

I. INTRODUCTION THE smelting plant of the British Columbia Copper Co. at Greenwood, B. C., now closed because of the decline in the price of copper due to the European war, is of special interest to metallurgists for several reasons. It was successfully smelting in blast furnaces the lowest grade copper ore of all plants in America. In order to do so, it had to run at' very high efficiency, which necessarily required a large tonnage per square foot of hearth area, together with the minimum amount of labor and other costs. The furnaces smelted daily 2,250 tons of ore (6.62 tons per sq. ft. of hearth area), carrying 0.85 per cent. of copper, at a smelting cost of $1.18 per ton. The entire plant required 130 men to operate it and keep up repairs, showing a labor efficiency of about 17.5 tons per man per day. In the present paper, the method of obtaining these results is shown. Most of the information contained in this description I obtained as Assistant Superintendent, during the two years preceding the present shutdown. AMERICAN investment in foreign mining interests today faces its greatest task. U. S. dollars must make possible the. steady procurement of the minerals our defense effort consumes in huge quantities. The two most vital factors involved in foreign procurement are time and the continued good will of the nations from which minerals are purchased. The Point IV program was formulated to care for the second item, but it has failed to do the job. Its lack of success has not been from intent or from basic failure in formula. Foreign Investment, Four Eras Foreign mineral development, in so far as participation by private capital from the United States is concerned, may be divided into four main chronological categories: First: The period prior to the first World War when people, capital and products moved with relative freedom across international boundaries, and London was the recognized mining seat of the world. By the end of 1919 the United States direct investments abroad amounted to $3.9 billion of which some $900 million were in mining and smelting and $600 million in petroleum. Investment climate throughout most of the world was excellent. Second: The period between the end of World War I, when the international economy had been shaken from its foundations, and the beginning of the great depression of the 1930's, which still further disrupted the world economy. By that time the world mining center had moved across the sea and the United States direct investments abroad had increased to $7.7 billion of which mining and smelting accounted for $1.2 billion and petroleum for $1.1 billion. Investment climate was good in most parts of the world. Third: The period of the depression of the 1930's and the beginning of World War II during which foreign trade was still further disorganized and the international economy collapsed. Nazi barter agreements were initiated in many parts of the world, and Soviet propaganda commenced to make its, influence felt in many countries. During this period United States direct investments abroad decreased to $7.3 billion. Mining and smelting investments during the same period decreased some $200 million, though direct investments in foreign petroleum areas increased an equal amount. Investment climate became less and less hospitable in all parts of the world affected by economic nationalism. Fourth: The period since the beginning of World War II during which total direct investments abroad increased from $7.3 to $13.7 billion. Of this sum, at the beginning of 1950 investment in foreign mining and smelting is reported to have been $1.2 billion-back to where it was in 1929, and in petroleum to have reached $3.7 billion. Investment climate remained favorable in the countries respecting contractual obligations and fair in their treatment of invested capital. [ ] As noted above, the relative freedom of passage across international boundaries by people, capital and products ended with World War I and the situation remains unchanged in a greater part of the world. While this same war upset international economy, the depression of the 1930's caused the collapse of world trade, and exports from all countries fell to an alarmingly low figure. Perhaps no aspect of the investigation of an ore-deposit is of greater importance to the mining geologist and engineer than a consideration of its geological structure. A thorough understanding of the type, size, shape, and arrangement of any ore-body is essential to the proper conduct of exploratory, developmental, and mining, operations. Significant as these remarks are' in relationship to ore-deposits in general, they become of paramount moment when a complex structure such as the Broken Hill Lode is in question. In this connection the use of the term "lode" as applied to the Broken Hill ore-bodies may terid to confusion of ideas among those not familiar with the field or with the literature pertaining thereto, by reason of the fact that it is generally understood that a "lode" is characterised by simple, tabular form, regular outline, defined walls, and persistent attitude. However, as the terminology is well established by common usage, itsretention appears desirable, and, for the purpose of this paper, the name "The Broken Hill Lode" refers to that complex unit which includes pre-eminently the famous ore-bodies exposed in the workings from the North Mine on the one extreme to the South Blocks (Zinc Corporation) Mine on the other.That the practical value of geological investigation, of the ore-bodies was realised by the Geological Sub-Committee of the late Scientific Society of Broken Hill is attested by the...

The TAG and Broken Spur hydrothermal mounds are located on the Mid Atlantic Ridge (MAR) at 260N and 290N (respectively). Both were initially discovered by exploratory work from surface vessels and both have since been investigated by submersibles. The discovery of TAG resulted from a NOAA Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse (Rona et al. 1975) which fortuitously sampled low temperature materials on the east wall of the MAR rift valley and follow up operations (Rona et al. 1986) located the high temperature (365°C) mound some 5km to the west. In 1994, ODP deep sea drilling (Leg 158) at over 3,500 metres of water recovered core to a depth of 150 m below surface (Herzig et al. 1998) and for the first time allowed a geological interpretation of an active mound. The Broken Spur mound was accidentally discovered in 1993 when sulphide fragments were observed on a deep-sea towed camera system (Murton 1993). Later that year, exploratory submersible dives by Alvin located the hydrothermal field and the area was again explored by submersible in 1994 and 1997. Despite the amount of work carried out, our geological understanding of the MAR mounds is limited. Much effort has gone into measuring fluid chemistry whilst practical difficulties have inhibited good geological mapping of the sulphide areas. It is clear from both TAG and Broken Spur that the mounds are not necessarily located in the areas of highest heat potential. Indeed, TAG is some 2 km from the rift valley axis and has been operational for several tens of thousands of years. Hence, heat availability is not a major consideration and the most obvious control is a structural one. Mapping on Broken Spur indicates a series of isolated vent-sulphide areas, concentrated around a minor graben. Their distribution, size and nature all indicate that they are residual parts of a much larger sulphide body which was at least the size of the present TAG field. The evidence is for a cyclical pattern of mound growth -mass wasting? rejuvenation and the Broken Spur mound appears to be in the rejuvenation stage of the cycle. Mound cyclicity must be related to the supply of hot water which itself is a function of the connectivity of fracture systems. Hence, we return to the theme that the major controls in mound development are structural ones.

Introduction Although the equilibrium conditions of the copper-tin alloys have been the subject of a ?great amount of research, the equilibrium diagram is still in doubt. The first systematic investigation of the series was made in 1894 by Le Chatelier, who published a freezing-point curve. In 1895, Roberts-Austen and Stansfield published the complete liquidus and partial solidus curves, which they modified somewhat in 1897. Their liquidus as given in 1897 is essentially that accepted today (Figure 3). Haycock and Neville also published a liquid us curve in 1897. In 1898, William Campbell published a series of micrographs showing the changes in microstructure which accompanied the thermal changes of Stansfield? s diagram. The classic work on the bronze series was published by Heycock and Neville in 1903. Their diagram was based on both thermal and microscopic evidence, and is the first for this series of alloys which can be considered nearly complete. Further, it was the first bronze diagram in which any attempt was made to apply the phase rule in the interpretation of the thermal and microscopic results. That portion of Heycock and Neville's diagram covered by the present work is reproduced in Figure 7.

THE very extensive development of a brown coal formation, in the region of the Rocky Mountains, is well known to all of you. The existence of these coals was known years ago, but they were of no practical importance until within a few years, when the mineral wealth of that country began to be developed and railroads were built. As their qualities became better known, their adaptability to domestic manufacturing and metallurgical purposes was more appreciated. They are still much undervalued, although they are mined at some points on a very extensive scale. A large portion of this coal formation is of cretaceous age, while it appears to extend into the tertiary epoch; but whatever difference there may be in the ages of these coals of different localities, they all have some common characteristics which distinguish them from our Eastern stone coals of the

THE first record of the discovery of iron ore in Missouri was Marquette's observation in 1673 of brown iron ore, or limonite, in the Mississippi River bluffs just north of the mouth of Apple Creek in southeastern Perry County. There is no record of any attempt to mine or smelt Missouri iron ores until 1815, when the Ashebran furnace was erected at the Stouts Creek shut-in near Arcadia, Iron County. Some limonite was treated in this furnace, the first iron furnace west of Ohio, but most of the ore was hematite from Shepherd Mountain and adjacent deposits. Eight years later, in 1823, the Perry furnace five miles north of Caledonia, Washington County, was constructed to smelt limonite ore. It was not until 1890 to 1900, however, that these ores attracted considerable attention. Nearly 300,000 tons had been produced by 1911, and this production had come from 24 counties in the Ozark region. For the next two decades, until 1931, essentially all activities ceased. During the depression years of the thirties when employment was low many people turned to the brown ores for subsistence; consequently production was increased. World War II produced another stimulus to the industry. The availability of risk capital in the past three years has revived interest in these deposits, although no appreciable increase in production has resulted.

The Bagdad district is 67 kilometers west of Prescott, Arizona, (Figure 1). The area north of the Old Dick and Bruce Mines was originally mapped by Anderson, Scholz and Strobell between 1943 and 1945, (1). The region is perhaps better known for the Bagdad porphyry copper deposit of tertiary age. However, 2 to 5 kilometers south of this deposit are several small massive sulfide occurrences in a eugeosynclinal Precambrian greenschist environment. More specifically, in. the Bridle formation of the Yavapai schist series. Three of these mines - Old Dick, Bruce and Copper Queen - were mined by Cyprus Mines Corporation between 1957 and 1977, and produced nearly 2mm tons of 3.6% copper and 12% zinc. These deposits occur at the interface between andesite and rhyolite and are stratiform in character. Certain structural and textural properties of the Bruce orebody suggest that remobilization of the massive sulfides occurred at some period during the metamorphic history of the area.

The Brukunga pyrite mine was operated from 1955 to 1972 to supply feedstock for sulfuric acid production in the South Australian fertilizer industry. Iron sulfide ore, mined by Nairne Pyrite Ltd, was finely crushed and concentrated onsite with the concentrates being sent by road and rail to Port Adelaide for roasting. Waste rock was dumped at two locations on the western side of Dawesley Creek and the tailings pumped to a valley-fill storage facility on the eastern side. Production of 1.5 Mt concentrate resulted in 3.5 Mt tailings and 8 Mt waste rock. The site has been administered by the South Australian Government since August 1977 and a lime treatment plant has been operated on the site since September 1980. Environmental issues arising from these operations included: diversion of Dawesley Creek to accommodate the waste rock dumps; dumping of low-grade sulfidic ore in waste rock dumps at the angle of repose immediately adjacent to Dawesley Creek; exposed fresh sulfide mineralisation in the quarry floor; tailings storage facility dam wall constructed by upstream up-lift using tailings and waste rock; an acid water pond sited on the tailings; and pollution of natural drainage. As a result, the minesite rapidly became a source of acid drainage and potential contaminants (sulfate, Al, Fe, Mn, Cd, Zn, and Ni). Various Government bodies have been responsible for considerable effort and expenditure in reducing the flow of acid seepage and contaminants into Dawesley Creek. Presently an estimated 60 per cent of seepage from the waste rock dumps, tailings storage facility and quarry is collected and neutralised prior to discharge into the creek. Tailings have been covered with waste rock, biosolids, neutralisation sludge and soil and planted with grasses, shrubs and trees to reduce rainfall infiltration. Monitoring of water flows, water quality and riparian ecosystems is on-going. Consultants have been engaged to develop cost-effective remediation techniques and a five-member Brukunga Mine Site Remediation Board was appointed to oversee remediation of the site and liaise with the community. Construction has commenced on the diversion of Dawesley Creek, and plans are being developed for the relocation of waste rock back to the quarry benches and upgrading of the neutralisation plant. The paper examines operations, environmental monitoring, remediation, research and community involvement with respect to current best practice.

This paper consists of two parts: the first part describes the principles and functionality of the BsnMod program, and the second part presents preliminary application of this program to paleo-fluid flow modeling in the Anticosti Basin. The BsnMod program simulates fluid flow and heat transfer during the evolution of sedimentary basins through numerical solution (finite difference method) of three partial differential equations, which describe sediment compaction, fluid continuity, and heat conservation. It can be used to estimate the evolution of fluid overpressure, flow rate, and temperature during the basin history. The program was written in C++, works under Windows environments, and has a user interface allowing inputs in dialogues and outputs in both tabular and graphic forms. The program was applied to the Lower Paleozoic Anticosti Basin in eastern Canada. The basin history consists of a passive margin stage and a foreland basin stage. Preliminary simulation results indicate that no significant fluid overpressures were developed in the passive margin stage and during the early period of the foreland basin stage, but strong overpressures were developed within the foreland basin succession during the middle and late periods of the foreland basin stage. Fluid flow rates were generally slow, and thermal profiles were not significantly disturbed by fluid movement throughout the basin history. Potential source rocks of hydrocarbons were found in the foreland basin succession. The strong overpressures in the foreland basin succession could have been a major driving force for hydrocarbon migration from the source rocks to the underlying potential reservoir rocks.

This paper is one sided because it presents the problem, but not the solution. The problem of blisters (bubbles) and occasional tears in caisson liners occurred when blasting and we have not found a conclusive cause nor a preventive solution. The bucketwheel stacker/reclaimer is suited for a variety of bulk material handling systems, especially those operating with stockpiles in excess of 30,000 tons. The bucketwheel stacker/reclaimer, although relatively new in the United States (first introduced here in 1964), has been successfully used in European countries since the early 1940's. Basically the machine is the outgrowth of the bucketwheel earth excavator and the traveling tripper boom type stacker. Since their introduction here they have achieved wide acceptance, especially with coal fired power plants. (Figures 1, 2, and 3.) The stacker reclaimer has been utilized in barge and ship loading/unloading facilities, and in the material handling systems for steel mills, where it has been used to stack and reclaim iron ore at rates up to 6000 tph stacking and 4000 tph reclaiming. They have also been employed at mine mouth power plants for the handling and storing of the plant fuel supply and to help balance the mining rate with the fuel consumption rate.

Dimension stone is the term generally given to rock used in building construction. During early European history in Otago, locally available dimension stone products were easily obtained. Crude rock shelters built on river banks with schist rock within Central Otago soon gave way to more established and sophisticated permanent homesteads constructed with the same materials. Victorian architectural achievement is celebrated in Otago with many fine bluestone block buildings. When the University Council decided to build substantially in stone, it narrowly escaped disaster. It was well known at the time that brick in Dunedin was of an inferior quality and that it soon wasted. Rev Dr Stuart said before the 1879 Commission that æthe Council had some old-world notions and liked to have the University with some architectural styleÆ. Contemporary utilisation of dimension stone is generally restricted by expense to a simple veneer. Stone products produced from Otago quarries have found ready markets in other areas in New Zealand , particularly prior to the share market crash in 1987.
