F OR many years, only one grade of structural steel has been used in volume in Canada. Its characteristics have not been altered appreciably and its long use speaks well for its performance. This standard grade of structural steel may be bought and specified as C.S.A. G40.4 steel or the American equivalent, A.S.T.M. A7. The principal limitations and requirements of this specification are shown in Table I. Within the last five years there has been a growing awareness among the steel producers and steel fabricators that economic forces are at work which make desirable the availability of new and better grades of structural steel. Competition from other materials has increased. The use of concrete bridges and pre-stressed concrete beams is a prime example. New sources of steel from outside the country have become a threat to the Canadian industry and its high cost-price structure. THE potential oil-and gas-bearing area with "which this paper deals is the large undefined Carboniferous basin, roughly triangular in shape, occupying about 10,000 square miles of southern and eastern New Brunswick. Its base, about 135 miles long, lies on the gulf of St. Lawrence and embraces the whole eastern coast-line of the Province, while its apex lies in the south-west corner of the Province, near the International boundary (see map, Figure 1). The Carboniferous basin may be divided roughly into two areas-the Northern basin and the Southern basin-by a structural feature represented by a ridge of low hills running north-easterly from the Saint John river, near Saint John, on the southwest, to Indian mountain, about eight miles north of Moncton, in the northeast. Within the Northern basin, all evidence regarding the presence or attitude of the older Mississippian Albert Shale series, the only oil-bearing rocks known in New Brunswick, is for the greater part obscured by a thick and practically horizontal blanket of Pennsylvanian strata and, although evidences of oil and gas have been reported, none has been positively identified. Five parallellines of gentle folding, running to the northeast, occur in the Pennsylvanian rocks, within a distance of 100 miles from north to south. This folding is reflected in the courses of the rivers, which lie within the synclines. The relationship of the folding in the younger rocks to structures in the uncomfortably underlying older rocks is unknown, but should now be possible of clarification by means of a geophysical survey accompanied by drilling. Independent geological examinations have yielded no evidence of value in this respect, nor have five exploratory boreholes drilled by per-cussion tools to a maximum depth of 3,645 feet been of assistance, as only one inconclusive hole completely traversed the beds which normally overlie the Albert shales.

Newmont has had continuous production at their Ahafo operations, Ghana, since 2006. In 2013, Ahafo initiated an efficiency programme to improve mill performance and reduce energy consumption. Following this assessment, a Turbo Pulp Lifter (TPLTM) was installed in the Ahafo SAG mill in April 2015 to replace the existing radial pulp lifters. Plant operational data showed delivery of a power saving of 10 per cent, an improvement in throughput of 3.3 per cent, with no loss of grind size. Pulp lifter life was also doubled from 11 to 22 months.However, during subsequent relines when the grates were removed it was found that one in four of the outer pulp lifters were wearing at a faster rate than the remainder. This was investigated by Discrete Element Method (DEM) modelling, which predicted some overtopping and internal recycle within the pulp lifter. Significantly, the model predicted that the recycled material would pass back down every fourth outer pulp lifter, matching the field observations. Subsequently, the DEM investigation was continued and became an R&D project to improve the TPL design. "In early 2014, Pan American Silver Corp. commenced a project to construct a second shaft at its La Colorada underground mine located in Zacatecas State in Mexico. This was the first new shaft development project undertaken by Pan American Silver in the history of the company. The existing mine workings permitted the use of a raise bore for the excavation of the shaft opening, utilizing directional drilling in poor ground conditions to advance the pilot hole. This was an interesting project with many challenges and successes, and numerous lessons learned. The project was successfully completed in 2016, with the shaft operating at full mine production capacity within weeks. INTRODUCTION The La Colorada Mine has a long history dating from at least the 1920’s. The mine is located in the northern portion of Zacatecas State in Mexico in the Chalchihuites area, an approximate two hour drive south from the city of Durango. Pan American Silver acquired the La Colorada mining concessions in 1998, with mine production at that time consisting of only a few hundred tonnes per day. Over the course of the following 15 years, with the addition of an oxide processing plant and some expansions to the sulphide processing plant and site infrastructure, production was eventually increased to a maximum of 1,250 tonnes per day, all of it generated from conventional cut-and-fill stopes in the underground mine. An existing shaft was used to hoist the ore to surface, and over the years Pan American Silver had deepened the shaft and had changed out some of the hoisting plant. However, there were historic workings in close proximity to the shaft that made it unsuitable for personnel transport, and shaft maintenance was becoming difficult. The shaft was increasingly considered as a risk to the long term production continuity, and also to further deepening of the mine. In addition, expanding the capacity of this old shaft was not possible. Drilling of the La Colorada mineralization at depth commenced in 2010, with very good exploration success. As a result, by the end of 2013, the mine reserves had grown to a total of 6.5 million tonnes of high grade ore (388 g/t Ag, 0.36 g/t Au, 2.4 % Zn, and 1.3% Pb). Furthermore there were more (and higher grade) sulphide reserves than oxide reserves at depth. Following the completion of an internal study in 2013 with assistance from one of the international shaft contractors, a decision was made to increase the production from the mine with the construction of a new shaft and a new sulphide processing plant, a project with a calculated payback of 2.2 years."

"The development of processing methods for the preparation .of three electronic materials with rare-earth components is discussed. The resulting processing innovations are the results of a search for an economically competitive pilot scale or industrial production flowsheet without compromising the required properties of the final products. The three cases highlighted in this presentation are: 1) The preparation of high energy (Pr-Nd-Ce)FeB magnets for MRI application from a mixed-rare-earth oxide with a narrow range of composition directly prepared from the solvent extraction circuit of bastnaesite ore. 2) The kg production of the giant magnetocaloric effect Gds(SixGe1-x)4 magnetic refrigerant materials from commercial grade gadolinium metal (95 to 98 at. % pure) instead of high purity gadolinium metal (99.8 at. %); and 3). An industrial chemical synthesis flowsheet for the production of the superconductor precursor of YBa2Cu3O7.INTRODUCTIONIn the laboratory discovery stage, the synthesis of a new material is carried out using very high purity components, usually the highest purity available. As the new material is studied and characterized, the effectiveness of its desirable properties becomes better defined and understood. The evaluation of the effectiveness of the .property over the range of a given parameter and other interactions are further studied. Once it's potential application becomes clear, a practical and economical processing method need to be developed. The successful material processing flow sheet does not necessarily have to be a scale up of the laboratory procedure. At this stage, substitution of starting components and with lower purity materials is considered as the economics of the processing becomes a major issue. There is a well-known saying, variously attributed to the great King Solomon and other sages of antiquity, to the effect that 'there is nothing new under the sun'. The inventive genius of man, as far as it is personified in the metallurgist, has often had the truth of this statement poignantly brought to mind when investigating the priority of ideas in its own particular branch of science. Not infrequently some operation, at first inilocently taken for a novel procedure, has later been found to have had an irrefutable precedent in the more or less remote past.When confronted by a question of this kind the metallurgist can generally much simplify his search if he at once turns his scrutinising gaze towards that ancient home of metallurgy, Germany. Vast departments of the smelting art have originated there, and even when Germany has not been in position to claim priority of invention, it has at least been characterised by a distinction equally as worthy - ie that of the faithful and authoritative exposition of the theoretical grounds on which the invention rests.In the present instance, in endeavouring to trace the history of pyritic smelting, the writer has naturally turned in the abovementioned direction, and not without some result, although the recorded data are, as might have been expected, meagre. A complete history of the art of beneflciating ores by means of fire, in all its many ramifications, still remains to be written. Possibly it may never be written, for the extent of the subject is tremendous. It is even practically impossible to clearly trace the development of one of its most modest sub-branches in satisfactory detail, or to present that branch without going to a considerable extent into related matters of a merely general character. For the purpose of dealing with the subject it will be convenient to divide it into two concurrent heads, and to distinguish, for historical reasons as well as for metallurgical ones, between that branch of the general method of matte smelting, which, until about 1891, has been called 'pyritic smelting', and the more recent offshoot of the latter, which, by distinction, may be called 'pyrite smelting'. The nature of pyritic smelting was clearly defmed by Dr John Percy in 1880, and his interpretation3 may be accepted as well known. To recall the characteristics of the method we may perhaps paraphrase Dr Percy's meaning by describing the process as a special method for the smelting of lean or dry silver or gold ores, which do not contain sufficient lead or copper for these metals to act conveniently as collectors of the precious metals. The operation is conducted in a blast furnace, with an amount of carbonaceous fuel sufficing to produce an exclusively reducing atmosphere, and with the addition of pyrites, in order to form a regulus in which the precious metals shall be concentrated, the pyrites themselves being either argentiferous, auriferous, or cupriferous, or any combination of these three, or wholly barren of metal values. In the common acceptation of the term, it is understood that the use of the reverberatory furnace is excluded.

The smelting plant and equipment at Mount Isa, as originally designed and built, was described by J. M. Callow (1) *.F. A. Forward (2) described alterations and additions to the plant and discussed the metallurgy of mixed carbonate-sulphide concentrates at Mount Isa, prior to 1933, in the Proceedings of this Institute.In 1933, A. F. McAskill (3) gave full mechanical details of the plant in a paper presented to the Institution of Engineers, Aust.FLOW SHEETSFig. No. 1 represents the present general flow sheet. Forward's (2) flow sheet is reproduced here as Fig. lA, and will serve for comparison in depicting subsequent deletions from, and alterations and additions to, the plant.Fig. No. 2 presents the daily tonnage flow sheet of 1939 practice.ALTERATIONS SINCE 1933General. Many changes in metallurgy and operation have taken place, particularly subsequent to March, 1935, when the treatment of a mixture of carbonate and sulphide ores was discontinued and the mill commenced operating on all-sulphide ore. This alteration brought about the elimination of gravity concentration-Jigs and Tables and resulted in the production of all-floatation concentrates of a very fine sizing. Refer Table No. 2, page?) Radical changes in the analyses and physical nature of concentrates also followed (see Table Nos. 1 & 2, page ?) and, similarly, radical changes in the smelting plant have been slowly brought about.

The AMIRA International P843A Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling (GeMIII) project is an interdisciplinary research collaboration between 17 global mineral companies and four research organisations aimed at providing support for the emerging industry trend of geometallurgy. The main aim of the project is to develop predictive geometallurgical indices which can be incorporated into a resource block model to maximise the commercial value of an orebody and to minimise the social and environmental impact of mining operations.Researchers at the Parker Centre/CSIRO have been focusing on the development of predictive hydrometallurgical indices for the GeMIII project via rapid, small-scale, cost-effective tests and protocols for comparative ranking of attributes relevant to leach performance. The focus of the small-scale leach tests has been to determine the leach index (relative indication of leach performance), recovery, impurity deportment, reagent consumption, effect of size/degree of liberation and mineralogy of samples for their relative ranking. Predictive tests for heap leach hydrology (related to agglomerate characteristics) and slurry rheological behaviour are also being developed.

The limiting criterion in the use of stainless steel for certain forming operations such as coining is its hardness, which determines parameters such as required striking pressure, wear on dies, and integrity of pattern detail. Attention is given here to the development of ultra-soft ferritic stainless steels for coinage. In the first instance, the influence of carbon content on the striking properties of a series of commercial and experimental 17%Cr alloys was evaluated. It was found that a lower carbon content permitted the striking of relatively highly profiled and intricate patterns, provided that the hardness did not exceed 125 HV. Hardnesses as low as 115 HV were achieved in the fully annealed condition, but these alloys required high striking pressures. In a further study, three grades of experimental 14%Cr ferritic stainless steels were produced with a view to optimizing the ductility. When the residual impurities were minimized, hardness values of about 100 HV and lower were achieved. Micro-alloying additions allowed the heat-treatment response and grain size to be controlled. Excellent tensile properties, with elongations of up to 42 per cent, were achieved in the fuly annealed condition, and highly profiled patterns were produced in coining trials.

COALTECH 2020 initiated a research project to provide the coal mining industry with a modelling tool to determine the expected types of subsidence, risks and the investment required in post-closure funds to cater for subsidence associated with bord and pillar mines. A detailed literature review was conducted to determine the most important parameters in calculating the cost associated with surface subsidence. A subsidence prediction model was developed to determine the likelihood of different types of subsidence. The study made use of current knowledge of failure mechanisms and its aim is to assist the industry and government in arriving at the most suitable arrangements when authorities require financial instruments to assure compliance with environmental regulations.

Introduction In order to improve outputs and to reduce or hold mining costs, many attempts have been made to mechanize the getting and loading of coal in the major coal producing countries, and machines of various kinds and sizes have been designed and manufactured. Some of the most important are: Joy Continuous Miner Joy Coal Auger Goodman Mining Machine Lee-Norse Koal-Master Jeffrey Colmol Cardox Hordsecg Recovery Drill German Coal Plough British Coal Plough with agitated blades M. & C. Samson Stripper AB Meco-Moore Cutter Loader Joy Gloucester Getter The three last named are the chief longwall machines in use and the AB Meco-Moore and the Samson Stripper are doing a good job in their respective applications. It is understood that the Gloucester Getter recently installed in a British colliery also shows reasonable promise. It was felt, however, that to meet the conditions of the mines in Nova Scotia, any machine developed must have certain distinctive characteristics. It must: ( 1) Be able to cut and deliver coal in quantity and of the right sizes ( 2) Be easily manoeuvrable ( 3) Be suitable for longwall operations ( 4) Not interfere with timbers already set ( 5) Cut its own stable (6) Work on reasonably heavy gradients

Heavy mineral sand exploration drilling prior to the 1970s generally utilised open hole auger and air-blast type drilling. However, mining reconciliations were poor and limitations on accuracy and precision of drilling results were severe.Working with the exploration companies, Wallis Drilling principals designed various systems, including what was termed the ‘Eneabba System’ and then the ‘Capel Twin-Tube System’. Eventually the company with its improvements developed and patented the Aircore Drilling System.Aircore drilling has subsequently become recognised as an excellent drilling system for exploration and mine-sample drilling that gives good precision and accuracy in sampling both above and below water. Its use has also been extended to many other commodities and is used in a number of overseas countries.This paper documents anecdotally the development of the system, identifying problems encountered during the times it was evolving and of the means to overcome the problems as being the documentation of the story by the inventors and developers in Wallis Drilling Company. Aircore drilling system is a Western Australian technological development owing its existence to the designing and incorporation of a number of discrete improvements along the way and recognises the tenacity and inventiveness of all who contributed to the system, in both Wallis and also in a number of companies that gave the impetus to succeed.

IN 1922, the writer communicated to the Institute a paper entitled The Development of the Coal Industry in Canada (1), which summarized the considerations set out in a series of papers (2) concerned with coal-mining in Canada which he had presented in 1920 and 1921. This paper contained a forecast by decades, commencing 1920, of Canadian coal production, importation, consumption, and exports, based on anticipated rate of population increase, and continuation of the gradual increase in the per capita rate of coal consumption in Canada that had taken place every year up to 1920. The following comparative statement brings our the differences between the forecast and actual experience:

"The first printed report on Canada's coal resources was published in Paris in 1672(1. Written by Nicholas Denys, then Governor for France of Isle Royale (Cape Breton Island), the report dealt exclusively with the coal of the Atlantic region because little or nothing was known about the interior of North America. Clearly, also, he wrote about a resource of which much was known among the military and early settlers of that day. This early knowledge is not surprising because the presence of coal is clearly displayed in the coastal cliffs of Cape Breton as it was also, at a later date, to the first arrivals on Vancouver Island.An example of early use was that of the French garrison at Fort Louisburg in the first half of the 1700s. Still earlier, in 1643, Governor Winthrop of New England reported the receipt of a small ship load of coal from New Brunswick (2). Despite this early knowledge there was no significant development of coal mines until the 1800s. This had to await the ending of wars between the French and British factions and the growth of population. Basically, also, its development awaited the beginning of the Industrial Age. Organized coal mining began in Canada in 1825 with the formation of the General Mining Association. This British firm was the creation of a group of London jewellers which had been granted royal rights, by the British crown, to all minerals in Acadia (substantially the present Maritime Provinces). The Association took over a number of existing small mines and opened up larger operations in the Sydney coal field. Subsequently, it expanded to the mainland Nova Scotia fields at Stellarton and Springhill. The Association continued in existence as the major coal producer in Canada until 1899 when it sold its properties to the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Company, Limited (3). This Montreal-based firm managed the coal mines as a major Canadian producer of coal until 1968 when financial problems led to the expropriation of the mines by the Government of Canada. The federal government established the Cape Breton Development Corporation to operate the larger mines on Cape Breton Island. This Crown corporation continues to be a .major producer of coal in Canada."

The Peirce-Smith converters are traditionally carrying out the converting process of a copper matte in the smelters of Codelco-Chile. However, its production increment is very limited due to the investment magnitude associated to the fulfillment of the environmental regulation. The objective of this paper is to present the Codelco continuous converting process technological advance when converting mattes and/or white metal into blister copper in a Teniente converter unit as an alternative to increment the corporative anode copper production. In 1994, Codelco-Chile started evaluating its ?home made technology? as an alternative to the traditional batch-type converting process. By the year 2001, the Caletones smelter converted liquid white metal to blister copper in a rearranged PS converter continuously. Then, during the 2001-2003 period, several pilot and industrial scale tests were done in a Teniente converter unit at Codelco Norte smelter, evaluating the continuous converting process, i.e., processing liquid mattes (62-68% Cu) to blister copper, demonstrating its technical feasibility with: (i) both constant production of gas flow and SO2 concentration, (ii) production of liquid slag, and (iii) production of a clean blister copper, suitable for the refining process. The promising results have led Codelco-Chile to plan for the 2006 period, a next advanced stage for the continuous converting process evaluation by carrying out a new campaign of tests in a Teniente converter unit at the Codelco Norte smelter.

The Fosfago phosphate rock concentrator is located in the state of Goias, Brazil, 300 km south of Brasilia. The ore is from an enriched carbonatite, which was discovered in 1971 during exploration for pyrochlore niobium ore. The flowsheet was developed in Brazil by personnel from Agrico Chemical Company and Consolidated South America. Engineering was provided by Codemin, a subsidiary of Consolidated, Engineering and construction management was pro- vided by both Agrico and Consolidated personnel who formed the Fosfago team. The concentrator was designed for 500,000 tpy of 37-38% P2Oj dried product. The facilities consist of open pit mining, crushing, stockpiling, and concentration. The product is pipelined seven km to a filtering, flash drying, and railroad loadout station. The plant was successfully started in May 1979.

The Kaldo furnace smelting technique was developed for oxygen steel production by the late Prof. Bo Kalling, Domnarvet, Sweden. Development started in 1948, and production in 1956. Five million tons of steel were produced in TBRC's in 1973. Mainly due to high TBRC maintenance costs, the steel industry now prefers non-rotating converters. In non-ferrous metallurgy, however, qualified new applications of the TBRC technique have been realized or are being considered. Inco, Canada, succeeded to convert nickel matte to metal in the Domnarvet pilot plant in 1959, and have now installed a commercial plant in Copper Cliff. La Metallo-Chimique, Belgium, has pioneered secondary copper smelting and refining in the TBRC, operating plants in Beerse, since 1968, and Alton, U.S.A. Peko-Wallsend Ltd., Tennant Creek, Australia, was faced with the problem of producing saleable blister from concentrates containing 1.5-2.0% Bi. The flash smelting matte, containing 0.2% Bi, could not be refined to an acceptable limit of 0.03% Bi in the blister copper in a Peirce-Smith converter. Tests at Domnarvet indicated that a TBRC would achieve satisfactory bismuth elimina- tion. Two TBRC's were installed in Tennant Creek and operated for 14 months during 1974-75. The problems encountered and how they were over- come are described. Further TBRC applications have been studied in Sweden.

From a mining point of view the Portland Cement Industry falls logically into the Industrial Minerals Division. Portland Cement manufacture requires four principal materials, lime, silica, alumina and iron. The usual source of lime is limestone. Silica sources include clay, shale, quartz, sandstone and sand. Alumina is usually provided by selecting a silica source with a suitable alumina content such as clay and shale. "Cement Rock" is occasionally found in which all four ingredients are found in natural combination or sufficiently close that only minor adjustments are required. In the absence of iron oxides a white cement can be produced. All raw materials used in Canada contain some iron and in most plants further minor quantities of iron are added to promote fluxing, hence the typical grey colour of Portland cement. The modern period in cement manufacturing started in 1824 when Joseph Aspdin of England patented a process for the manufacture of a modified hydraulic cement which he called "Portland Cement". Hydraulic cements are cements that harden under water. Although natural cements, made by calcining and grinding natural argillaceous limestone were produced in Canada as early as the 1830's, Portland cement was not produced in Canada until 1890, about 18 years after it was first made in the United States.

In 1803 the purchase of the immense territory called the province of Louisiana wm arranged between Thomas Jefferson, President of the United States, and Napoleon Bonaparte, First Consul of France. This central portion of what is now the United States was claimed in 1682 by the explorer Robert de La Salle for France, who continued to hold her title to the vast domain until 1762, when it passed by treaty to Spain, only to be retroceded to France in 1802, in consequence of Napoleon's military domination of Spain. Jefferson did not care to see New Orleans and its extensive hinterland pass into the hands of France. Spain did not matter so much; she was quiet and feeble, whereas France was restless and aggressive under Napoleon, who had dreams of founding a French colonial empire on the American continent. The expression of American feeling that Jefferson elicited came as a surprise to Napoleon, who concluded that a contest was not worth while, for his navy had been shattered by the English, and it was evident that only maritime supremacy could enable him to retain this trans-Atlantic possession; so he resolved to put it out of the grasp of England and at the same time replenish his military chest by selling Louisiana to the United States. The price was 60 million francs. By the terms of the Louisiana purchase a magnificent territory was added to the national domain; it covered more than a million square miles, or more than the total area of the United States at that time. Louisiana included the present States of Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Oklahoma, with parts of Colorado, Idaho, and Minnesota; but
