"SUMMARY Taru-Toge tunnel is being constructed using drilling-blasting technique as a part of expressway project connecting Shin-Tomei Expressway and Chuo Expressway at the boundary of Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures in the Central Japan. The maximum overburden is about 400 m. The authors have been carrying out a monitoring program to measure dynamic and multi-parameter responses of tunnel during and soon after the blasting operations using a multi-parameter monitoring system (Acoustic Emissions (AE), Electric Potential (EP), Temperature (T), Humidity (H) and Air Pressure (P)) and stand-alone type compact accelerometers developed by the first author. The measured response involves dynamic vibrations and other measurable parameters caused by blasting as well as by stress-redistribution around the tunnel face. This is one of the first attempts in the world to measure the response of rock mass caused by blasting at a very close vicinity of the tunnel face. In this paper, the authors present the outcomes of this unique monitoring study on the dynamic responses of the Taru-Toge tunnel during excavation and discuss their implications in actual applications. INTRODUCTION The real time monitoring of the stability of tunnels are of great importance when tunnels are prone to failure during excavation such as rockbursting or squeezing (i.e. Aydan et al. 1993, 2001). Experimental studies by the authors showed that rock indicates distinct variations of multi-parameters during deformation and fracturing processes (i.e. Mizutani et al. 1976; Aydan and Daido 2002; Aydan et al. 2003, 2011). These may be used for the real-time assessment of the stability of rock structures. An application of this approach was done to the Taru-toge tunnel a part of expressway project connecting Shin-Tomei Expressway and Chuo Expressway at the boundary of Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures in the Central Japan (Imazu et al. 2015). The parameters measured involve electric potential variations, acoustic emissions, rock temperature, temperature and humidity of the tunnel in addition to the measurements of convergence and loads on support members during the face advance."

Simulation of coal preparation circuits is becoming a widely practiced technique used for the design of coal preparation plants. On a much more limited basis, simulators are finding application in off-line process control. A typical application in the latter category involves inputting projected coal washability data for a shift into the simulator and using the software to optimize product quality and recovery within a range of predefined specifications. The plant is then operated at SG?s of separation determined from the simulation exercise for the one shift time period. This procedure is useful in that it incorporates some form of advanced planning into preparation plant operations. There is an attempt made to reflect changes in feed coal quality on a shift by shift basis rather than continually running the plant near design specifications with changes in SG?s of separation being made in response to an inadequate sampling program which only provides a spot measurement of material that has already passed through the plant. Instead of instituting changes on a shift by shift basis, NHI has proposed a method whereby monitoring three major operating parameters, * Feedrate to jig * Flowrate from hydrocyclone overflow * Density from cyclone overflow the ongoing plant operating performance can be accurately predicted on a continual basis, i.e., updated hourly. Using a distribution curve to predict the split between the clean coal and refuse from a given separator does not account for variations in efficiency that occur as a result of variations in operating parameters. NHI and Arch have studied the effect of both jig loading and solids content in the recirculating load to the jig on product quality. As a result, relatively simple measurements can be made on-line in a preparation plant which will provide input data to the simulation program that enables the prediction of jig/hydrocyclone circuit performance on a real time basis.

The Eagle zone is a gold-bearing, sheeted, quartz vein porphyry deposit hosted by the Cretaceous Dublin Gulch biotite granodiorite stock, located in central Yukon, 50 km north of Mayo. The deposit occurs at the western end of the stock and has been drill tested over a 1000 m by 500 m area, to a depth of 150m. Mineralization consists of 1 cm to 2 Cm wide, parallel, grey and white quartz veins with accessory gold, arsenopyrite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, native bismuth, bismuthinite, and scheelite. Vein densities range from two to fifteen veins per metre and average approximately five per metre. The majority of the veins have potassic and or phyllic alteration envelopes. Alteration of the granodiorite becomes pervasive as vein densities increase. Mineralization outside of the Eagle zone, but spatially related to the Dublin Gulch stock, includes: (i) scheelite bearing sheeted quartz vein zones within the east-central portion of the stock; (ii) a swarm of gold-bearing quartz-sulphide veins up to a metre wide in a zone along the northern contact of the stock and extending 7 km further west; (iii) the Mar scheelite skarn located on the south side of the stock; and (iv) cassiterite-bearing breccias located 2 km north of the stock. A geological potential resource of 64.5 Mt tonnes at a grade of 1.03 g/t Au has been estimated for the Eagle zone from widely spaced core and reverse circulation drill holes. Mineralization is open at depth, on strike to the west and beneath the hornfels to the north.

INTRODUCTION OF FROTH FLOTATION INTO THE UNITED STATES "The introduction and development of the flotation process have proved to be of such momentous importance to the mining industry of the United States that they deserve to be considered historically ." T. A. Rickard l James M. Hyde installed the first froth flotation process in the U. S., about Aug. 1, 1911, at the Basin Reduction Co. plant, Basin, Mont., which was then under lease to the Butte and Superior Copper Co.2 Two months later, the Minerals Separation Ltd.. filed suit in the U. S. District Court of Montana against Mr. Hyde char& him with infringement of their Patent 835, 120/1906. The U. S. District Court decided in favor of Minerals Separation Ltd. on July 28, 1913. This decision was reversed by the Ninth Court of Appeals in San Francisco on May 4, 1914. Then the U. S. Supreme Court, on Dec. 11, 1916, upheld the patent on three counts only but restricted it to 'the use of less than one percent of oil.” The Miami Copper Co. was sued by Minerals Separation on Oct. 10, 1914, for infringement of Patents 835,120 and 962,678, and 1,099,699. The Miami Copper Co. was operating under John M. Callow's froth flotation process Patent 1,104,755/~uly 23, 1914. Miami lost this suit in the District Court of Wilmington, Del., and appealed to the Court of Appeals, Third Circuit, Philadelphia. The Third Court of Appeals decided against Miami, May 24, 1917. The case was referred to a Master and hearings to determine profit and damages were not settled until 1923. Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. was sued Sept. 9, 1919, and Magma Copper Co. was sued Jan. 10, 1920. Thus, the first ten years of froth flotation in the U. S. were beset by patent litigation. This litigation suppressed the free circulation of new discoveries or useful information that might be cited in a patent suit against the originator; it accounts for many of the blank spaces in the historical record. T. A. Rickard3 has reviewed the history of flotation and has given the chain of discoveries, patents, and processes that resulted in froth flotation. "The Canadian Copper Company, formed in 1885, began mining the nickel-copper ores of Sudbury in 1887 and producing nickel-copper matte from its smelter in 1888(1). Although it was quickly appreciated that the separation of nickel and copper (i.e. refining) was critical to the production of a marketable nickel product, refined nickel was not produced in Canada until about 1918. From the beginning of the industry, there was considerable political agitation to refine nickel in the Province of Ontario(2). The companies, however, claimed that the existing processes, viz. the sodium sulphide ""tops and bottoms"" process operated by the Orford Copper Company of New Jersey, U.S.A.(1,3,4) and the carbonyl process(5,6) developed by the Mond Company at Clydach, Wales, were too costly to operate in Canada. Nickel was first refined in Ontario about 1918 when the International Nickel Company opened a nickel refinery at Port Colborne, Ontario(6). Initially, however, the refinery at Port Colborne employed the Orford sodium sulphide process, and the first electrorefined nickel in Canada was produced in 1920 by the British America Nickel Corporation whose mine and smelter were located in Sudbury, Ontario, but whose electrorefinery was located at Deschenes, Quebec, near Ottawa, Ontario. The purpose of this article is to outline the early history of nickel electrorefining and to trace the significant developments which led to the first successful commercial electrolytic nickel refinery in Canada. The development of an electrolytic process for refining nickel is due largely to the efforts of four individuals, viz. Carl Hoepfner, Hans A. Frasch, D.H. Browne and ultimately N.V. Hybinette, and the contribution of each is discussed separately below."

Zinc metal was first produced in India around 1100 A.O. and a zinc industry based on retorting gradually developed in both India and China(1) . The vertical retort method for smelting zinc ores was developed in England in the 1730s; this was followed by the more fuel efficient horizontal retort process developed by the Belgians in the 19th century(2) . The horizontal retort process was the standard method of zinc manufacture until the 1950s when it became obvious that it could not compete with electrolytic zinc technology(2). The present day extractive metallurgy of zinc is dominated by the electrolytic process which now accounts for almost 80% of the world's primary zinc production. In recent years the electrolytic zinc process has seen significant improvements: the fluid-bed roasting of zinc concentrates, improved leaching and residue treatment techniques such as the jarosite and goethite processes, improved solution purification procedures, mechanization of the zinc electrolysis step and of the zinc melting and casting operation. In addition, new leaching processes have been implemented for the treatment of oxidized ores, particularly silicates, and the pressure leaching of zinc sulphide concentrates is now a commercial reality. Although the electrolytic zinc process was first used on a commercial scale in 1916, its history can be traced back to the 1860s. The purpose of the present paper is to outline the early history of the electrolytic zinc process and to trace the significant developments which led to the first successful commercial electrolytic zinc plants.

Diverse and considerable energies are associated with mobile equipment operated and maintained on mine sites. Loss of control of these energies is a common cause of injury on mine sites and this is well recognised by the mining industry. In 2006, 4 multi-national mining companies formed the Earth Moving Equipment Safety Round Table (EMERST), with the aim of engaging collectively with the manufacturers of equipment to accelerate improvements in mining equipment design. Originally focused on surface mining equipment, and particularly haul trucks, the focus of EMESRT widened to include underground and exploration equipment. Since 2006, EMESRT has maintained a program of regular visits and other engagements with a steadily increasing number of manufacturers. The membership of EMESRT has also increased, with 15 companies being members in 2012. An initial step undertaken by the EMESRT members was the development of ?Design Philosophies? which drew of the collective experience of mining companies to identify potential unwanted events which cause equipment related injuries and illness. A technique for analysing risks associated with operation and maintenance tasks, the Operability and Maintainability Analysis Technique (OMAT), was subsequently developed and trialled. In 2011, the EMERST members resolved to propose a common form of safe design information to be requested by all members companies during procurement, and the resulting EMERST Design Evaluation for Equipment Procurement (EDEEP) process was launched at MINExpo in Las Vegas in September 2012. The outcomes of OMAT risk assessment and control activities are integrated during this process into a common ?Safe Design Information? template for communication to prospective purchasers. The aims of requesting manufacturers to follow this process are to provide equipment purchasers with a common way of assessing how well the issues in the EMESRT Design Philosophies are addressed in the equipment design; and to provide manufacturers with additional information for use during equipment design. The process involves identifying priority tasks based on frequency and the severity of the consequences of potential unwanted events identified in the EMESRT Design Philosophies; undertaking a task-based risk assessment of priority tasks in conjunction with site-based personnel; evaluating the effectiveness of control measures; and providing information about safe design features in a standardised format.

Prior to March 1992, the only component of the lead acid battery that was not recycled by East Penn Manufacturing Company was the sulfuric acid electrolyte. This acid was unusable in new batteries because the iron level was found to exceed new product specifications. The development of a liquid ion exchange process to remove the iron from the acid allows East Penn to currently recover over three million gallons of sulfuric acid annually. The process is based upon the use of an iron selective liquid ion exchange material or solvent to extract iron from the sulfuric acid electrolyte followed by regeneration of the solvent. Equilibrium and kinetic data for the extraction and regeneration steps were collected in order to scale up the process to commercial scale. An electrochemical process for the treatment of the acid used in the regeneration step was, also developed which significantly reduces the volume of strip acid required in the process.

Introduction The sliding-form method of erecting concrete structures was first devised and used in the early part of this century by the Sante Fe Railroad Company for the erection of a grain elevator at Santa Fe, New Mexico. A somewhat related principle has been employed for a number of years in shaft lining work and, to our knowledge, was perfected in Butte, Montana, but until the building of the concrete headframe at the Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Company, Ltd., at Asbestos, Que., the method, as applied to surface structures, was quite foreign to the mining industry in Canada. The current shortage and cost of structural steel shapes has no doubt contributed more than any other single factor to the investigations that have led to the use of reinforced concrete as a headframe building material. Mining men in western Quebec and northern Ontario have shown a great deal of interest in the design and construction of the headframe at the East Sullivan mine in Bourlamaque township, Que., and we have had many queries regarding the methods used and, in particular, for an explanation of the sliding-form principle. This article is written in an attempt to set forth the conditions which were to be met; to explain the construction methods used, and to discuss the economy of concrete headframes as compared with the conventional steel structures with which the mining fraternity is familiar.

The Ebor Volcano in north eastern New South Wales is an eroded example of a central-type intraplate volcanic-intrusive complex. It is of Miocene age (19 - 20 Ma) and has similarities to other central-type volcanoes in eastern Australia which may represent manifestations of sub-lithospheric hotspot activity. Thick lava flows are exposed around the Great Escarpment and are dominated by a tholeiitic basaltic suite, ranging from ol-tholeiite to qz-tholeiite to icelandite with ages of 19.2 - 19.6 Ma. On its western edge, the tholeiitic lava suite probably overlies remnants of basanite flows belonging to the Eocene (~48 Ma) Doughboy province, but elsewhere, minor alkaline basaltic lavas may be coeval with the tholeiitic suite. Several felsic bodies were emplaced into the volcano at ~19.0 - 19.2 Ma and include subalkaline and peralkaline types. The Crescent Complex is a Miocene-age, strongly differentiated mafic to felsic intrusion in basement rocks and centrally located in pre-erosion reconstructions of the Ebor Volcano. It is interpreted to be a major feeder for the tholeiitic lavas based on age and composition. Evolution of the dominant tholeiitic suite proceeded from a parental ol-tholeiite magma, through qz-tholeiite, icelandite and small volumes of felsic rocks by fractionation of plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene and titanomagnetite, accompanied by enrichmentof SiO2, SFeOlMgO, alkalies and HFSE.

The ECOMINING platform aims to develop a scientific and technical organization in order to promote within the natural resources industry a framework for environment-friendly exploitation technologies (on Best Available Technologies principle) and also to develop a solid basis for performing Research and Development projects. The ground of this project is the success of the First International Seminar: ECOMIN-ING - Europe in 21st Century1, organized by the Research and Development National Institute for Metals and Radioactive Resources Bucharest in co-operation with ITASCA Consultants GmbH Germany, the University of Petrosani and supported by the National Society of Salt Bucharest & Praid salt mine branch and the Ministry of Economy and Commerce. The platform provides a complex data base, for partners? selection and researchers? team structure. This can provide the scientific results with a high level of confidence for the projects of interest in the field of exploitation of mineral resources and for the participation on national and international project proposals competitions (i.e., target the 7th Framework Programme or any European / national programme, which can provide funds for the ECOMINING platform field of interest). The next step is the affiliation of the ECOMINING platform to the European ones, and to be compatible with them. The ECOMINING platform represents itself a 7th Framework Programme (FP) project idea.

Minerals and Metals Group Pty Ltd (Golden Grove Mine) commissioned a comprehensive study of the life of mine using advanced 3D stress modelling. Essential input into the modelling was the proposed mining sequence, itself the culmination of years of planning and geotechnical experience gained in comparing actual performance to predictions. The modelling approach addressed the whole of mine at a scale of 5 km. There were however several magnitudes of scale to address, from the scale of laboratory testing (0.05 m), to drive size (5 m), extraction size (50 m) and stope size (500 m). Scaling was therefore an integral part of the procedure. The constitutive rock properties in terms of peak and post-peak behaviour varied with the scale. At the laboratory scale, the constitutive relationships for all the main rock units were determined in 3D as well as recovering the in situ stress using the rock memory technique, deformation rate analysis (DRA), whereas at the larger scale the properties were varied to match observations.The modelling, using non-linear analysis to account for rock mass yield and peak-residual strength, demonstrated that if the planned extraction sequence and stope geometry had been pursued there was a high probability of large volumes of excess shear stress being released. However, it was not possible to identify whether the excess shear stress (ESS) will release as one large event or many smaller events. The mining approach was to modify the extraction sequence/stope geometry to manage the hazard. This is where the economic advantage can be realised.Alternatively or in combination with further modelling, the volume identified with the predicted high ESS or energy release could be intensively explored for structures having adverse orientation to the stress change and with sufficient areal extent to release the ESS. The microseismic data can be interrogated for the likelihood of a large event to support the hypothesis of a singular release versus multiple releases of smaller events. If the initial planned extraction sequence had to proceed as designed, changes to dimensioned stopes would be recommended for risk mitigation. The quantity of copper produced by secondary material processing is increasing as metal producers look to cleaner and cheaper sources of copper. The need to smelt secondary copper more economically, to process a wide range of materials with large fluctuations in size and composition and to cope with the increasingly stringent environmental constraints have put considerable pressure on existing conventional secondary copper smelters. The Top Submerged Lance process, developed and commercialized by Ausmelt Ltd offers a low cost technology, which is particularly adapt at processing copper-bearing scrap and residues. The application of Ausmelt Technology to replace conventional secondary copper processing operations introduces potential for significant advantages in environmental performance, and improved process efficiencies through the use of cheaper hels and reductants, the high rate of metal recovery and the flexibility inherent in the technology to process various feed material types. The economical, process and environmental benefits of its application are highlighted for both the smelting and converting stages of copper production.

"The ability to recover cyanide from gold plant tailings has been known almost as long as the cyanidation process has been practiced, but there has been little incentive to process tailings in this way in the past. With the development of technologies that make it possible to recover and recycle free or complexed cyanide directly from gold plant slurry tailings, which indicates, on paper at least, significant cost savings compared to cyanide destruction, coupled with the introduction of legislation to seriously limit the discharge of cyanide to the environment in most gold-producing regions of the world, many companies are evaluating the cyanide-recovery alternative.There is arguably an even more compelling reason for mining companies to consider cyanide recycling. With the growing storm of negative public opinion that the use of cyanide in the mining industry is attracting - following several highly publicized spills over the last couple of years - the time has come for the gold industry to demonstrate environmental diligence and stewardship in the use of this commodity that is so vital for their industry. There is no doubt that the widespread implementation of cyanide recycling will reduce the impact of the cyanidation process on the environment, both by reducing the risk of spills (with less cyanide being transported from manufacturing plants to gold mines), and by reducing the loading of toxic and nontoxic metals and ions in the tailings.This paper briefly discusses the pros and cons of the different processes that are available for the treatment of gold plant tailings to regenerate and recovery cyanide for recycling, and presents a techno-economic argument for the incorporation of this technology into many gold plant flowsheets today."

Mineral exploration in the United States relies heavily on theoretical geologic concepts and indirect methods such as geophysics and geochemical prospecting, as there are few exposed areas of mineralization which have not already been explored at least once. In Mexico ore-grade samples can be cut at the surface on vein, replacement, and disseminated types of deposits in many areas. Here the problem is not in finding a mineralized area but in deciding which mineralized area can be explored and developed at the least risk and cost, and have the greatest profit potential, within the framework of Mexican mineral economics and government policies. Mexico's min¬eral industry is regulated through a system of permits for various phases of mineral exploitation, and by taxes. This regulation and its effects are not unlike those which may be expected in the United States if present legislative and administrative trends continue.

The phosphate formations of the Pliocene epoch were deposited along the coastal shelf of the eastern seaboard. The deposition of the phosphate is thought to be somewhat contiguous along the early shoreline, and the deposit can be more or less traced over an 800 to 930 mile path from the Florida Gulf Coast, near Ft. Myers, to the Pamlico Sound of North Carolina. This is illustrated in Figure 1. Three areas of commercial importance are currently being exploited from this extensive known deposit: 1 - The so-called ?Bone valley? in Central Florida (multiple operations) 2 - Hamilton County in North Florida (Occidental Corporation operation) 3 - Beaufort County in North Carolina (Texas Gulf Sulphur operation)

The imposition of non-market regulations, such as the proposed SO2 standards for coal combustion, will typically lead to less efficient (thus more costly) production in a free enterprise system. For the coal industry these increased costs will occur in several ways, among which are mining less accessible low sulfur reserves and transporting low sulfur coal to distant markets. There are, of course, social benefits of reducing the S02 emissions from the use of high sulfur coal. The social benefits include decreased health risks, reduced damages to property, and certain unmeasurable benefits associated with the aesthetic appeal of clean air. Proponents of Federal S02 standards argue that the benefits gained from reduced emissions will exceed the costs borne by the coal industry and society in general in meeting the regulations. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the degree to which costs of meeting future energy demands from coal will change under different sulfur standards. No attempt is made to estimate the benefits of imposing regulations. Specifically, the impact of SO2 standards on the private costs of meeting regional coal demands, the competitive positions of the nation's major coal producing regions, the degree to which strip mining as opposed to underground mining will be feasible, the amount of coal being processed, and the amount of coal transported over major rail routes will be analyzed.

DURING the twentieth century Canadians have been steadily improving their standard of living. Originally, this improvement depended almost entirely upon the export of basic raw materials and a triangular system of trade with Great Britain and the United States. However, since the Second World War, Canadian living standards have improved still further because of the very rapid d0evelopment of secondary industries. As a result of this development, the present demand for scientists and engineers exceeds the supply, and interest in scientific research has never been greater. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the professional and economic status of Canadian scientists and engineers over the past half century. GROWTH OF RESEARCH It is difficult to determine accurately the amount of scientific research conducted in Canada since 1900. However, ?prior to World War I, it was limited and was connected mainly with primary industries and health. Government departments did some; university science faculties, overloaded with teaching responsibilities, did a little; and industry, which consisted mainly of subsidiaries of American and British firms, depended chiefy upon foreign sources for new information.

Technological change is continually affecting the mining industry and the many papers being presented at this meeting reflect this fact. I fully agree that miners must remain fully cognizant of technology that can change mining costs and therefore your competitive marketplace. Despite the embrace of new technology and effective mine management techniques, the mining enterprise may not realize increased net income if the structure of the minerals marketplace is not understood. An important segment of the marketing structure for minerals is transportation. Transportation costs per ton can be much greater than the mining costs per ton and may accordingly overshadow hard earned gains in productivity. Change is greatly affecting the transportation industry but the change is driven more by governmental policy than technology. Although some technological advances are occurring in the bulk transportation business, the changes I want to address arise from policy. Policy changes have come from legislation in the 1970's culminating with the Staggers Act of 1980 and ensuing Interstate Commerce Commission decisions.

THE problem of the proper size and capacity of the open-hearth furnace has been a predominant issue ever since its inception some sixty years ago. The original furnaces, built in 1868 at Landore, England, were only to 3 to 4 tons capacity, and from' this there has been a steadily increasing and almost uniform rate of expansion until furnaces producing 300 tons are in successful operation today. At the end of the first half of this 60-year period, or about the year 1900, 50-ton furnaces we're common. Up to this time the problems of expansion had been largely those relating to suficient capital and the engineering development of larger units. But as 75, 100-ton and larger furnaces were proposed apprehension grew and other questions assumed leading consideration.
