"The importers and manufacturers who import or produce products with packaging containers are charged a recycling fee in Taiwan. The amount of waste packaging containers used for calculating the recycling charge is based upon the amount declared by importers and manufacturers which might be underestimated. This study aims to estimate the amount of waste packaging containers generated by households in Taiwan and also explores its distribution. The sampling survey and ratio estimation are conducted for estimating the recycled amount; while the refuse sampling method for municipal solid waste composition is employed to estimate the un-recycled waste packaging containers. The estimated total amount of waste packaging containers in 2011 generated by households in Taiwan is 696,511 m.t., of which, 79.49% of the waste packaging containers were recycled and 20.51 % were landfilled or incinerated. This study shows that the amount of waste packaging containers declared by importers and producers is underestimated around 20%.IntroductionWaste packaging containers including iron cans, aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic containers, paper containers, aluminum foiled paper packs are officially announced to be recycled in Taiwan. In order to create the economic incentive for raising recycling performance, associated manufacturers and importers are charged a recycling fee to subsidize recyclers. The amount of packaging containers declared by importers and manufacturers is used for calculating the recycling charge and recycling rate. The importers and manufacturers might underreport their producing (importing) amount to pay less recycling fees. Therefore, the estimated waste packaging containers based upon the amount declared by importers and manufacturers is usually underestimated. Related previous studies about waste packaging containers recycling in Taiwan are done by Hsu and co-workers [1-4]. Hsu and Kuo [1] estimated total production values of recycling and evaluated the performance of recycling performance based upon the estimated production values. Hsu and Liu [5] provided a cost analysis of recycling for waste packaging containers in Taiwan. Bor, Chien, and Hsu [2] presented a market-incentive recycling system for waste packaging containers in Taiwan. Hsu and Kuo [4] provided an amending mechanism for product charge and recycling subsidy in response to the social economic changes for waste packaging containers recycling. Lee and Hsu [ 6, 7] explored the distribution, fee rates, and collection rate of waste containers. This study aims to estimate the amount of waste packaging containers generated by households in Taiwan and also explore its distribution."

(Read at the Amenia Meeting, October, 1877.) IN the case of The Eureka Consolidated Mining Company v. The Richmond Mining Company of Nevada, recently tried at San Francisco, California, the real defendant was the Richmond Consolidated Mining Company, of London; but this being a foreign corporation, holds its mining property in Nevada through the Nevada corporation of similar name, in which the London Company owns all the stock, except the few shares necessary to "qualify" the American directors. The trial would naturally have taken place in the Circuit Court at Carson City, Nevada, and before a jury. But by stipulation of the parties, the case was tried in San Francisco, before Hon. Stephen J. Field, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, Hon. Lorenzo Sawyer, United States Circuit Judge of the Ninth Circuit, and Hon. E. W. Hillyer, United States District Judge, for the District of Nevada. The hearing began July 23d, 1877. The witnesses occupied two weeks, and the argument of. counsel three days. Very eminent lawyers were. engaged on both sides ; for the plaintiff, Messrs. Solomon Heydenfeldt, R. S. Mesick, John Garber, and H. J. Thornton ; for the defendant, Messrs. S. M. Wilson, Thomas Wren, and J. J. Williams. The court held the case under advisement until August 22d, when Mr. Justice Field delivered its unanimous opinion in favor of the plaintiff. The action was a complaint in ejectment, and an appeal was taken to the United States Supreme Court. The questions at issue between the Eureka and the Richmond Company in this suit, comprised several points in the construction of the mining law of the United States, and its relation to the customs and regulations of the mining districts, which possess an importance and an applicability far beyond the limits of the case in which they arose. The bentonite industry in Europe includes both the smectite and hormite groups of clay minerals. The smectites are, essentially, a compendium of cationic differentiatable montmorillonite platelets which can be expanded in liquid media, whereas, members of the hormite group are characterized by fibrous and chain structured lattices which are non-expandable. As was pointed out in the March '78 issue of Industrial Minerals, each of the minerals in these groups has acquired a variety of names due to historic or regional usage.

THE object of the experiments reported in this paper is to determine the eutectic composition of copper and tin and to determine the location of the part of the liquidus line immediately above the eutectic composition in copper. Three methods were used in the investigation: (1) the method of dissolving copper in a bath of molten tin at constant temperature, with the idea that when the bath was saturated with copper its copper content, by analysis, together with the temperature at which the saturation took place would locate a point on the liquidus line (2) the method of the differential cooling curves, and (3) the method of microscopic examination. This paper is principally concerned with the results of the last two methods mentioned. The results of the first method, that of dissolving copper in molten tin, did not agree with the .results of Miller,1 by the same method, nor with the results of other investigators by other methods, nor yet with the results of the cooling-¬curve experiments and microscopic examination reported here.

Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited has maintained an interest in the screening of iron ore fines (nominally -6 mm). However, no dry screening process had successfully demonstrated acceptable separating efficiencies at high tonnage rates, low operating costs, and mechanical reliability when screening iron ore fines (containing up to 6% free moisture) at sizes of around 1 to 2 mm. A new type of vibrating inclined screen has recently been developed which is claimed to have a non-blinding screening surface. It was decided to test a pilot scale unit in an existing pilot plant located at Hamersley's facilities at Dampier, Western Australia. The appropriate operating parameters such as vibration speed and feed rate were determined using one fine ore type. Mats with different aperture sizes, and different feed moisture contents were also tested. Trials were then conducted on various fine ore types to indicate the effect of different size distributions on separating efficiencies. The effects of feed moisture content were determined with these ore types, and a blend of lump (nominally -30+6 mm) and fines was tested to compare the screen's performance with that of the bottom deck of the minesite product Screens.

The first introduction of automatic control systems for flotation occurred about fifteen years ago. The early control work coincided with the introduction of on-line assaying using XRF techniques. This OSA availability, coupled with the emergence of small digital computers suitable for process control in the late 1960-s, meant that the necessary process information and control hardware existed for flotation control experiments. A period of intensive research related to flotation control. ensued. A great deal of effort was devoted to the development of mathematical models of flotation. Plant experimentation sought to understand the effects of a range of flotation variables on the process. Finally, control loops were proposed and plant tested. An evolutionary pattern emerges when the range of flotation control installations is examined. The earliest systems had as objectives process stabilisation using reagent control. There were also some early attempts at flotation optimisation procedures, again using reagent variation. Current work is still associated with the same objectives. One of the difficulties with flotation control has been to recognise and define clear and precise control objectives. More emphasis is now placed on cleaner control which has the advantage that the objectives are usually well defined. A number of flotation control systems which cover a range of control system types is discussed. Based on this accumulated experience,a list of good and bad practice in flotation control is Proposed.

Acid mist generation is a major concern in zinc, copper and nickel electrowinning industries and there is a strong environmental drive to control its emission into the work environment. Foaming reagents are typically added to the electrolyte to alleviate this problem. In zinc electrowinning, Licorice and Saponin are examples of foaming reagents used for this purpose. In order for the foaming reagent to be effective, its foaming behavior must be determined. In this work, a test procedure was developed to study the foaming characteristics of various surfactants for use as foaming agents to control acid mist in aqueous metal electrowinning. This new test was termed as "mini-flotation test" and it was used to study the foaming behavior of a large number of reagents in an industrial zinc sulfate electrolyte under simulated zinc electrowinning conditions (gas sparging). In addition, the influence of important process parameters such as current density, electrolyte temperature, reagent addition level and sulfuric acid concentration on the foaming characteristics of the electrolyte for each surfactant were investigated. The results of this study have identified the most important factors that influence foam formation, growth and stability. This method could be used as a process control for reagent addition in the cellhouse by generating a calibration curve for the optimum electrolyte conditions.

The ultimate objective of the development work presented in the paper is to devise an appropriate method for relating powered support specification to geological conditions and mining practice, thus enabling the longwall method of coalmining to be successfully implemented throughout the varied coalfields of the world. The paper begins with a review of various methods previously used to determine support rating, each method being analysed with regard to its source, the logic and theory which constitute the method, and subsequent recommendations. An alternative approach is then proposed, the Powered supports being considered to be one of three foundations, sharing load with coal ahead of the faceline which acts as another foundation, and the waste behind the supports which acts as the remaining foundation. The load/deflection characteristics of the coal and waste, which in turn are related to geological conditions and mining practice, are shown to affect the load transfer on to and hence the specification of the powered support. In particular the characteristic of the waste foundation is shown to be affected by the caving mechanism, an alternative form to that mechanism accepted for British conditions being proposed and designated "parting-plane-controlled" caving. A finite element solution for a beam on elastic foundations was used to translate the above concepts into numerical results, these results being compared with data from Indian and Chinese operating conditions. The Indian case study examines the effect of using a conventional chock type of support in a one-web back mode when mining towards a roof break generated ahead of the face, while the Chinese case study compares measured subsidence over a longwall with "blocky" roof conditions with the model results. The comparisons are encouraging, suggesting that the approach used is worthy of further development.

"Mining executives are becoming increasingly involved with decisions of the ""What would happen if ... "" variety. Potential changes in government policy, such as tax incentives, E.G.M.A. allowances, etc. affect the economic future of present and proposed mining ventures.This paper will discuss various measures of effectiveness normally used in assessing this future, such as discounted cash flow, etc., and will describe means of introducing uncertainty into the computations. As the recognition of risk and attitudes toward accepting it are very important in the life of a mine executive, there will be a brief discussion of utility theory and its application to risk analysis.Risk models are usually of a size to warrant the use of an electronic computer. Therefore, to demonstrate the simple interaction necessary between a financial analyst and such a model, data will be read into a remote computer from a time-sharing terminal in the meeting room. It will be shown that changes may be rapidly made and alternative policies investigated ""on line"" to a computer."

Glass is one of man's most versatile creations. ---The earliest glaze known---is about 12,000 B.C. ---The oldest pure glass is a moulded amulet of about 7,000 B.C.---. Indicative of a knowledge of properly-proportioned, quality raw-material, means were found for producing the first relatively clear, transparent glass at about the beginning of the Christian era. The fundamentals of almost all the modern, technical processes of manufacture were established during the 3rd Century. (1) Glassmaking, practiced in Colonial America, was moved toward the Ohio Valley in response to increasing demands for fuel. This move, beginning in the 1860's resulted in the use of the glass sands contained in the Oriskany (and St. Peter) sandstone. (2) Glass sand,(3) virtually pure, fine-to-medium-grained quartz sand(4) is the principal raw material used in the manufacture of glass; it constitutes proportions which range to a maximum of about 72% and seldom is glass made without it. However, acceptable glass sands are, invariably, those which most nearly fit the glass-producer's economic needs and any method used to evaluate a raw material's potential must finally prove equatable with such needs. As used in the United States, source-rocks of glass sand include sandstone, unconsolidated silica sands, quartzites and vein-quartz. Admixtures of silica sand and other (principally clay and feldspar), readily separable components have been proven viable. However, the silica sand, refined by nature to a high degree of purity, is the desirable product of exploration. If the term, standard, is justified by long-continued use, the Oriskany - and St. Peter sandstones are, together, the nonesuch of the glass sand industry they provide the principal tonnage of melting sand. According to Grimsley,(5) Ottawa, Illinois, glass-sand is considered the standard glass-sand of the West and the analyses of Berkeley Springs sand (Oriskany) compare most favorably with this sand.

The abstract highlights the impact of flocculants used in the middle thickener of a copper-molybdenum plant on both process water quality and molybdenite floatability. The study investigates the effect of a starch-based flocculant (wheat starch) on the efficiency of the middle thickener and molybdenite flotation. The findings indicate that the presence of starch influences the settling behavior of particles with different shapes, and the dosage of starch affects both molybdenum recovery and the presence of copper minerals in the molybdenum concentrate.

"In the article carrying out technique of experiments for estimation of power efficiency of process of crushing in cone crushers «in a layer». The conformity of the granulometric characteristics of the crushed products obtained as a result of the tests, the theoretical equations for the size characteristics, and the choice of the optimal equation for the prediction of the granulometric characteristics of the final products obtained by crushing ""in a layer"". Optimization of granulometric composition of power of crushers working ""in a layer"" is carried out with the purpose of reduction of the electric power consumption at reception of a product of required quality. As a result of the experiments, dependencies are obtained, the relevance and applicability of the crushing process ""in the layer"" for obtaining crushed stone of improved quality is proved. INTRODUCTION A number of equations have been proposed for calculating the breakage energy. These include equations by Kirpichev and Kick, Rittinger and Bond (Bogdanov, Olevsky, 1982). Another equation for calculating the specific breakage work in breakage by impact and in stratum was proposed by Devyatkin (Boiko, 2003). In these equations, the breakage energy is proportional to the particle size raised to some power. In the equation proposed by Devyatkin, the ore piece thickness or the feed average diameter is used. The relationship between energy and breakage can be expressed as an equation (Lynch, 1981; Tikhonov, no. 3, 2008) where k is a coefficient characterizing the energy parameter depending on the strength of the feed, l is size in microns. The Rittinger formula is obtained for n = 2, the Kirpichev-Kick formula for n = 1, the Bond formula for n = 1.5. For n = 3 or higher, the equation describes fine and ultrafine grinding. R. Hookey proposed a formula (Lynch, 1981, Tikhonov, no. 3, 2008), where the size exponent n is substituted by a size function In all of the above equations, a single value of the feed and product size is used; for example, in the Bond equation, size is defined as the particle size of the 20% oversize (P80 and F80). However, a single size value can represent multiple distributions, making that the Bond method inappropriate for determining the size (Lynch, 1981). Describing an equation for estimating the grinding energy will allow to design the electric drive and ore preparation circuit for the given breakage method."

Laguna del Rey is the name of a dry lake bed located in the State of Coahuila, Mexico in a semi-desertic terrain typical of the basin and range physiography. Química del Rey, S.A., a subsidiary of Industrias Peñoles, has been producing sodium sulphate since 20 years ago, from brines pumped from the sub-surface of the present playa. The spent brine is used as raw material for the production of magnesium oxide. An extensive, lenticular deposit is found just below the playa. It consists mostly of glauberite (sodium-calcium sulphate) and blöedite (sodium-magnesium sulphate). The glauberite occurs as thin crystals oriented at random and leave many void spaces among them. These intercrystalline spaces are partly filled with mud, but the whole mass of the evaporite is still very porous. A brine that contains in solution ions of sodium, magnesium, sulphate and chlorine occupies the voids of the sponge-like evaporite body.

Whether we travel by rail or by auto, our pathway has its traditions of exploration and its records of early settlement. The mountain passes and the routes used by today's commerce are lasting memorials of the pathfinders whose unconquerable purpose was to search out a way-Lewis and Clark, Bonneville, Pike, Long, FrBmont, their names still live in your rivers and lakes and peaks. It was the glory of these adventurers that they spied out the land so that others might follow that long pro- cession of pioneers who occupied the new country- fur traders, gold miners, cattlemen, and homesteaders. Each of these pioneers attacked the problem of transportation in his own way, and each sought by his own method to win the resources whose richness had been reported by the pen of the Government explorer or by the swift rumor of the unnamed and unfamed adventurer. Trails were worn deep by these home or fortune seekers as they passed through the mountain barriers in successive waves-and these were waves that did not ebb, for this was an army of occupation. Along these main pathways of the West, as one historian has pointed out, the figure of chief interest was the sad- faced woman sitting on the front of the covered wagon.

INTRODUCTION. THE Evergreen mine, located at Apex, in the northern part of Gilpin county, Colorado, has opened a very peculiar and interesting copper-deposit, in which both bornite and chalcopyrite occur as rock-minerals. The country-rocks are crystalline schists cut by dikes of granulite and of pegmatite. At the Evergreen property they have been cut by a dike of a new kind of eruptive rock, to which I have given the name " Evergreenite" The rock is composed of quartz, alkali feldspars, orthoclase and albite (often interlocked as microperthite), with augite of the aegirine variety and long needles of enstatite and diallage. For reasons stated below, I believe the dike to be of Tertiary age. It is- easily traced on the surface of the ground, from a point in the bottom of Pine creek, about a mile below Apex,. to the top of Nevada hill, 1,500 ft. beyond and 600 ft. above it. (See Fig. 1.) It varies from 3 to 12 ft in width, and is bounded on both sides by contact-zones about 60 ft. wide, in which the crystalline schists have been changed into pseudo-quartzites or pseudo-gneisses, according to the injection of an excess of quartz or of feldspars through the special layer of the schists.. The most interesting feature is the presence of the pyroxenes, which are always found, though in very variable proportions from place to place, in the layers of these' metamorphosed crystalline schists. The dike has torn from its walls a large number of fragments of the wall-rock. It must have been in a viscous state when that happened, because these fragments of the wall-rock do not show any sign of resorption or of assimilation by the magma. DORSEY HAGER, Tulsa, Okla.-I have been asked why the Dexter region is dry. I would like to know myself. I drilled two dry wells on that same anticline which has production to, the east and west and south and north. That same anticline has seven domes that have been drilled and only three have proven productive out of the seven. In other words, you have one well-defined anticline with seven domes along its length, all mappable, all checked carefully, and only three of those seven have produced. Now why the others did not produce, I do not know. L. L. HUTCHISON, Tulsa, Okla.-There is no appreciable difference in the character or structure of the sands? DORSEY HAGER.-NO, I have never .been able to see any appreciable difference in the sands where we got production and Where we did not get it. I will say that the deepest wells we drilled, in the vicinity of Dexter, had no sands at the point where they got the production farther north. I. N. -KNAPP, Ardmore, Pa.-I first went to the Kansas-Oklahoma field in 1895 and occasionally thereafter until 1899, when I began drilling; for oil. I started close to wells that were producing gas and which, when drilling, lead made good oil showings in a sand above the gas. I thought these showings were good enough evidence of an oil pool for me without looking for any anticline and I made a paying development in what' I was afterward told by geologists was probably a synclinal trough. If I remember correctly Dr. Orton's report on the lola gas pool (about 1898) he distinctly said that he found no evidence of anticlinal structure and concluded from the records of a large number of wells that there, was a terraced structure of the productive gas sands, of which there were no surface indications.
