"The gently-dipping Devonian dolomite beds south of Great Slave lake in northern Canada are nearly every-where concealed by a cover of glacial drift and muskeg. Nevertheless, in 1898 or earlier, four small outcropping areas of dolomite, richly mineralized with lead and zinc sulphides, were discovered. Exploration work performed here up to the end of 1930, included intensive trenching and drilling of the showings, together with mapping and wide-spaced drilling in the surrounding region. This work proved that the discoveries are isolated pockets of mineralization much too small to be commercially valuable by themselves. No evidence of orebodies elsewhere was reported.Meanwhile, mapping by the G.S.C. in the Shield far to the east disclosed major Precambrian faults, some of which can be projected southwesterly (under a cover of Paleozoic sediments) to the vicinity of Pine Point. During the period from 1940 to 1947, consideration was given, by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company Ltd., to evidence of a theoretical possibility that, although apparently dormant in Paleozoic times, these faults may have provided a structural control and a source of ore-bearing solutions in some post-Devonian period. From this, it was postulated that the breaks might have created, in the overlying dolomite, a linear array of orebodies concealed by overburden but lying in a belt of considerable length and in a position predictable within practical limits. A program of drilling designed to test and exploit this specific concept was conducted from 1948 to 1955.he drilling within the new, theoretically-defined search area resulted in the discovery of many lead-zinc ore-bodies, none of which was exposed at the surface. Some of these are large and (as indicated by 1965 production records) very rich. They are situated 1 to several miles distant from, and apparently not connected to, the earlier-known surface discoveries. The drilling also disclosed that the ore, which consists of disseminated sphalerite and galena replacements together with colloform sphalerite and coarse galena cavity fillings, occurs mainly at certain stratigraphic horizons within a large, coarsely-recrystallized dolomite barrier reef. Considerable fracturing and folding was found. It has been suggested that reef development was influenced by post-Precambrian tectonic movements associated with the old faults in the basement complex. The ore may have been deposited by solutions moving from distant sources to favourable structural and chemical environments in or related to the reef.In more recent exploration performed in the course of preparing for mining production, the rate of ore discovery within the same general geological context has been greatly accelerated by the use of new geophysical techniques and drilling equipment. Reserves of 21.5 million tons, averaging 4 per cent lead and 7.2 per cent zinc, were reported in 1965, and production from open pits at the rate of approximately 248,000 tons of concentrates per year is in progress"

Steelmakers worldwide agree that the most efficient and cost-effective solution in BOF steelmaking is to desulfurize the hot metal between the blast furnace and converter. Various methods are currently in use, among which the Kanbara Reactor (KR, using only lime as a reagent), Magnesium mono-injection (MMI, using only magnesium; also known as the Ukraina-Desmag process) and co-injection (using magnesium and lime/CaC2) are leading. These three hot metal desulfurization methods are compared based on metallurgy, efficiency, costs and overall performance. Both available data from literature and experience from Danieli Corus engineers is used for this study. The KR process is able to reach low sulfur concentrations (> 10 ppm) in hot metal and has lower reagent costs. However, due to higher Fe-loss and heavy wear the KR process has the highest operational costs. The Magnesium mono-injection process is very fast due to the use of the reactive magnesium as reagent. Major problems with resulfurization (sulfur levels below 50 ppm cannot be reached) and the violence of the process made that this process could never get a firm foothold in the western steel industry. The co-injection process with magnesium and lime proves to be able to combine the best of both worlds. It can reach low sulfur concentrations and desulfurize fast. Co-injection is also the most flexible and cost effective.

"1.INTRODUCTIONThis paper is based on the Lee Tunnel project, which is part of the Thames Water’s Tideway Project.The client Thames Water has employed a Joint Venture of Morgan Sindall/Vinci Grand Projets and Bachy Soletanche to undertake the design and construction of the project under the management of CH2M Hill at a value in excess of £635 million ($990 million). The 3 main elements of the tunnel project are the permanent lining to the shafts, the precast segmental lining, and the secondary tunnel lining. All 3 are reinforced with different types of Dramix steel wire fibers and each element will be described in this paper. This paper will explain the basic structural design of FRC (Fiber reinforced concrete) based on the post cracking residual strength and will describe all the steps of this project, the testing program realized to support innovative design and the main technical learning point. 2.BASIC CONCEPT OF STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF FRCStructural design of FRC elements is based on the post-cracking residual strength provided by fiberreinforcement. Other cases, like early age crack-control or fire resistance, are considered non-structural use of FRC. For structural use, a minimum mechanical performance of FRC must be guaranteed. Fibers can be used to improve the behavior at SLS (Service Limit State) since they can reduce crack spacing and crack width, thereby improving durability and they can be used to improve the behavior at ULS (Ultimate Limit State) where they can partially or totally substitute conventional reinforcement in most conditions. In the design process, the definition of the performance expected from the material is a key factor and the mix-design of the material has to be optimized for the required structural performance.2.1 Testing Method In order to ascertain the structural requirements requested for the FRC segments, preliminary testing on samples will be required and the effectiveness of the proposed solution will also be assured by the testing of full scale specimens. Structural design of FRC elements is based on the post-cracking residual strength provided by fiber reinforcement. For structural use, a minimum mechanical performance of FRC must be guaranteed. Nominal values of the material properties can be determined by performing a 3-point bending test on a notched beam according to EN14651 (figure 1) or by performing the ASTM C1609 beam test:"

The legacy of underground coal mining may be a land surface which, in parts, may be unstable in the long term. A case study analysis has been undertaken to explain some of the hazards and how the risk may be assessed and managed.The Ipswich Coal Measures were extensively mined with shallow underground workings, which now underlie a number of suburbs in the eastern side of the city of Ipswich in south eastern Queensland. The area was subject to underground mining from the 1840s to 1997. In general, the mines were small, family-owned operations that were restricted by complex geology, interactions with neighbouring operations and ownership of surface facilities. The oldest available mine plans date back to the late 1890s.The residents in these mining areas have a long history of unexpected mining subsidence events. A level of risk management for property owners has been implemented by the Ipswich City Council, which requires a mining subsidence risk assessment to be submitted as part of building applications for property development in the areas suspected of having mining subsidence risk. This discussion examines a series of generic subsidence events and how the risk may be assessed and managed and the hazard controlled.CITATION:Ham, B?W, 2014. Financial theory often takes some time to penetrate industry and when it does it can result in a paradigm shift in valuations and mental models. The Black Scholes option valuation was first published in 1973, although the authors were only awarded a Nobel Prize in 1997. The valuation of real options has been applied to the oil and gas industry for some time, however it has only recently been more widely applied to the non-oil, mineral resource sector. The use of real option valuation (ROV) for the valuation of marginal and short mine life resource projects is a more useful valuation tool than the conventional DCF, NPV valuation tool. The application of ROV has major implications for corporate strategy. It generally favours equity over debt funding and non-hedging over hedging. A retrospective assessment of the successful development of the Lennard Shelf Operations demonstrates the concepts of implementing real options and the value destruction of limiting operational flexibility through debt and hedging activities.

"The Levitation Casting Process is a new continuous casting method that uses an electromagnetic levitation field, instead of a mold, to support and contain a column of solidifying metal. By counteracting gravitational forces and hydrostatic pressure on the metal column, this process eliminates friction and adhesion at the interface between the solidifying metal and the cooled walls of the casting chamber. The process inherently provides high casting speeds, excellent dimensional control and smooth, continuous emergence of solidified product from the top of the casting chamber.Of major importance is that the electromagnetic field produces an intense stirring of the liquid metal both before and during solidification. As a result of this stirring, the cast product has a homogeneous, equiaxed, fine grain structure generally suitable for immediate drawing or other forming operations without the need for hot rolling or other expensive additional processing.This paper reviews the fundamentals of the Levitation Casting Process, results obtained in casting various pure metals and alloys, and the production sized system at Lowell, MA, that uses this process. INTRODUCTION The LG-2 project is one element of the La Grande Complex, an integrated development of hydro-electric potential being constructed in north-western Quebec by the James Bay Energy Corporation. The project is located on the La Grande River about 65 miles east of Fort George on the James Bay coast and 600 miles north of Montreal. It comprises a 525 foot high dam, 81,000 feet of dykes, spillway and river diversion works and a 16 unit underground powerhouse that will have an installed capacity of 5,328 MW. The power installations at LG-2 represent approximately half of the total potential for the complex. When completed in 1982, LG-2 will rank as the largest underground powerhouse in the world. Studies and site explorations for the project were begun in 1971, construction commenced in 1973 and the roll date for the first machine is scheduled for February, 1980. GENERAL ARRANGEMENT OF POWER INSTALLATIONS As shown in Figure 1, the power installations are located on the south bank of the river about 4 miles downstream from the main dam. THE Liberty Bell cyanide precipitate is unique in that it is apt to vary widely in composition in the course of very short, periods of time, and a method of refining and melting that would prove highly satisfactory at one cleanup would yield almost an hopeless "mess" it a second. Table I gives a general conception of the wide range in grade and composition of those raw precipitates. It is evident that no one standard flux could be expected to produce a high-grade bullion with such a widely variable precipitate, and that any method of treatment with acid requires most careful consideration. Refining by Acids Naturally, our first efforts to improve our precipitates were directed along the lines of acid treatment. Table II embodies the results of careful sampling and analysis of one cleanup at the time when wet refining reached its maximum development at this mill. We have now discarded all methods of wet refining, successfully replacing them by amore scientific method of flux calculation described herein, but it is believed that a general description of this wet refining is warranted as it throws some interesting side lights on acid refining in general.

WHILE the library work of the Woman's Auxiliary to the A. I. M. E. was founded three years after the formation of the Auxiliary, its present policy of establishing permanent libraries in mining camps throughout the United States dates only from 1924. Since then sixteen libraries have been established and thousands of books have found their way to homes of far-away miners, bringing pleasure and knowledge to a multitude of Americans and future citizens. Library work was initiated under the presidency of Mrs. H. W. Hardinge in 1922 and firmly established with her aid as one of the main activities of the Auxiliary. The first chairman served but a short time and Mrs. A. O. Ihlseng then took over the work of chairman of the Library Committee. To place the surplus books of Auxiliary members and their friends in use in mining camps was the immediate work of the committee. This was accomplished by placing a traveling library in the Bureau of Mines' cars and also by sending books for distribution to section chair- men in our larger mining camps.

"Environmental impact assessment of copper metallurgical processes will soon become a compulsory activity in the future. The goal of this work is to analyses the copper metallurgical processes including pyro-metallurgy and hydrometallurgy based on the life cycle assessment method implemented in GaBi software. The evaluation indicators such as global warming potential (GWP), acidification potential (AP), photochemical ozone creation potential (POCP) and human toxic potential (HTP) are taken into account. The results show that the major environmental impact phase in pyro-metallurgy derives from beneficiation because of the largest material and energy consumption. It is also shown that copper hydrometallurgy has significantly lower environmental impact than pyro-metallurgy. Based on the evaluation results, some corresponding optimization methods are recommended to reduce environmental impact.IntroductionCopper is an important metal in modem society due to its wide variety of uses, including electrical wiring, heat exchangers, piping and roof construction and increasingly consumer electronics. Demand for copper has increased dramatically over the past decades, driving production rates almost exponentially. Annual production of copper was estimated to be 20 million tonnes in 2012 with Chinese production at about 6.06 million ton in 2012P1. The production process of copper has environment impacts that often go unnoticed by the producer. Higher production, coupled with declining ore grades, is placing increasing pressure on the natural environment.Sound environmental management helps producers improve their manufacturing technique. LCA is a well-established tool for assessing environmental impact potential and can be readily adapted to map impact potential over time, which can be used to quantify the environment impacts of a product or a process [21. This is achieved by creating an inventory of all the energy and material flows used in the process's life cycle. The results of an LCA can be used to improve the operation of a process so that they have less impact on the environment."

Since human daily demands for fresh water have been increased significantly, the supply of fresh water for the mining industry, especially froth flotation, should be considerably reduced. In addition, stricter environmental standards have been implemented in many countries to reduce the risks due to the disposal of wastewater, many flotation operators have to seek more efficient ways to utilize the limited fresh water sources. Recycling water with high concentrations of impurities is a normal strategy for most of the mineral processing plants; however, water quality should be carefully considered to guarantee a smooth flotation process. Recently, the application of seawater in flotation has attracted much attention due to its availability and abundance rather than fresh water. However, the influencing mechanisms due to the application of seawater in flotation have not been fully understood especially the reactions between mineral particles and bubbles in the presence of high concentrations of cations and anions. This would impede the application of alternatives to fresh water in the flotation. Therefore, this paper reviews the current water sources and the technologies for water recycling in the flotation process. Specifically, the life cycle of water in flotation was proposed. In addition, the strategies including high pulp density flotation as well as the most promising alternatives to fresh water have been discussed in details, with the related mechanisms being demonstrated.

THE recently announced run of three years, nine months and eleven days made by a. crucible steel melting furnace of the Columbia Tool Steel Co., which is claimed as a. world's record, brings forcibly to our attention the great improvements that have been made in the design, construction and operation of the Siemen's regenerative crucible- melting furnace since its introduction in this country. Credit for this advance should be given to the furnace designer, the manufacturer of refractories, and the operators of the furnaces, whose persistent efforts and intelligent co-operation in attacking the problem have resulted so satisfactorily. There are three factors that determine the life of a crucible furnace, or any other furnace for that matter : Design, nature of refractories and conditions of operation; (including the nature of steel melted) and to some extent these factors are interdependent. Thus, for instance, if a crucible furnace is to lie operated single turn and allowed to cool off considerably at night, in order to save fuel, the use of clay-brick melting holes may be advisable, since silica brick is not well adapted to endure rep eated heating and cooling. But the total life of a clay-brick melting hole is necessarily short. Again, if local conditions such as danger of flood make necessary the building of the furnace largely above ground, so that the radiation of beat is promoted, the cooling down of the furnace over the week ends, when no steel is melted, will be considerable-and the contraction of the furnace that results tends to wrack it to pieces. The character of the metal being melted affects the life of the furnace to a great extent. Low-carbon steels and steels made from iron and charcoal require higher temperatures and much longer melting tune than high-carbon steel or steel made largely from scrap; the life of the furnace will be shorter, and the number of heats melted will be much less, when such materials are melted.

A simple argument shows that it is impossible for the flight of a rod in contact with a litter bar in a rotary mill to be initiated at that point on the upside of mill rotation when all the forces acting on the rod are in equilibrium. The argument was confirmed experimentally in a study showing that the lift of litter bars is a function of their height, that the rod velocity at the point of departure has a significant radial component, and that the subsequent flight of a rod is along a parabolic trajectory as predicted by elementary mechanics. A quantitative account of the observed effects, which is based on a dynamic theory of the sliding interaction between rods and litter bars, revealed interesting properties of the motions of rods down the surfaces of litter bars when the latter are in uniform circular motion during the rotation of a mill.

"As part of the new 2nd Ave Subway Project, an existing tunnel constructed in the 1970’s will be connected to the new subway and used as new running tunnels. The existing tunnel had to be modified to comply with newer structural and fire life safety codes and to be connected to the new cut and cover station at 96th St. This paper will discuss the complexities of tying an existing tunnel constructed over 40 years ago into the new station and allowing for movements due to the unloading of the existing tunnel and the differential settlement of the two structures during both the construction and permanent condition. Topics that will be discussed include structural analysis, ground improvement techniques, selection of support of excavation walls, working in contaminated soil and instrumentation and monitoring of the structures. It will also cover retrofitting the tunnel to comply with updated Fire/Life/Safety requirements. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Second Avenue Subway (SAS) will be the first major expansion of New York’s subway system in over 50 years. To be constructed in four phases, it will run from 125th St. in Harlem to Hanover Square in the Financial District (see Figure 1). For most of its length, the alignment is directly under the Second Avenue roadway."

The lignite deposit at Onakawana on the Abitibi river is of particular interest at the present time, since the Ontario Government has recently decided to proceed with the extension of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway to James bay. Forty-five miles of steel will be laid this year to the crossing of the Moose river. This will cross the lignite field. It has been known for many years that lignite occurred in the Moose River basin, but it was not until drilling was commenced at Blacksmith rapids (or Onakawana, as the camp is now known) in June, 1929, that a seam of economic thickness and extent was found. Early in 1929 the Ontario Legislature voted $25,000 for the carrying out of a drilling programme in the Moose River basin. This came as a culmination of two summers' exploratory work by the Geological Branch of the Ontario Department of Mines, and as the result of a report which said; in effect, that further information concerning the mineral resources of the basin could only be obtained by drilling, and that such a drilling programme was well worth while in order to establish once for all whether lignite, fire-clay, or oil or gas did or did not exist in economic quantities in the region.

DUPING the last two years, and especially during the last six months, a number of important articles upon the new methods for the desulphurization of galena have been published in the technical periodicals, particularly in the Engineering and Mining Journal and in Metallurgie. I proposed for these methods the type-name of "lime-roasting" of galena as a convenient metallurgical classification,' and this term has found some acceptance. The articles referred to have shown the great practical importance of these new processes, and the general recognition of their metallurgical and commercial value which has already been accorded to them. It is my present purpose to review broadly the changes developed by them in the metallurgy of lead, in which connection it is necessary to refer briefly to the previous state of the art. The elimination of the sulphur-content of galena has been always the most troublesome part of the smelting-process, being both costly in the operation and wasteful of silver and lead. Previous to the introduction of the Huntington-Heberlein process at Pertusola, Italy, it was effected by a variety of methods. In the treatment of non-argentiferous galena concentrate, the smelting was done by the roast-reduction method (roasting in reverberatory furnace and smelting in blast-furnace); the roast-reaction method, applied in reverberatory furnaces; and the roast-reaction method, applied in Scotch hearths 2 Precipitation-smelting, simple, had practically gone out of use, although its reactions enter into the modern blast-furnace practice, as do also those of the roast-reaction method.

WASHINGTON CAMP, in Santa Cruz county, Arizona, is a small and little known mining district situated on the lower, eastern slope of the Patagonia mountains, about 20 miles east of Nogales and a like distance south of Patagonia Station on the Sonora railroad, which connects it Benson, 83 miles from Nogales, with the main line of the Southern Pacific. This district is also about 4 miles north of the international boundary, 35 miles west of Bisbee and 40 miles north of Cananea, in Sonora. The topography of the district, which lies at a general elevation of 5,500 ft. above the sea, is only very moderately rugged, and presents no obstacles to mining operations. Although some of the claims of the camp, including the Pride of the West, Belmont and Holland, were extensively worked for silver 25 years ago, they passed, at moderate depths, as in so many other districts, out of the argentiferous lead carbonate and sulphide into zinc, copper and iron sulphides; and for two decades the camp was abandoned and almost forgotten. In recent years, however, its apparent possi¬bilities as a copper producer have led to a revival of mining activity; but not, as yet, with conspicuous success. Although economically relatively unimportant, the deposits of Washington Camp are, mineralogically and structurally, nevertheless, typical examples of ore-bodies developed in connection with the garnet ledge now recognized as a normal feature of granite-limestone contacts; and, in the opinion of the writer, this is an instance where a minor example is yet essentially normal and capable of throwing important light upon the origin and genetic relations of the type.

"The method of determining coal pillar strength equations from databases of stable and failed case histories is more than 50 years old and has been applied in different countries by different researchers in a range of mining situations. While common wisdom sensibly limits the use of the resultant pillar strength equations and methods to design scenarios that are consistent with the founding database, there are a number of examples where failures have occurred as a direct result of applying empirical design methods to coal pillar design problems that are inconsistent with the founding database.This paper explores the reasons why empirically derived coal pillar strength equations tend to be problem-specific and should be considered as providing no more than a pillar strength “index.” These include the non-consideration of overburden horizontal stress within the mine stability problem, an inadequate definition of super-critical overburden behaviour as it applies to standing coal pillars, and the non-consideration of overburden displacement and coal pillar strain limits. All of which combine to potentially complicate and confuse the back-analysis of coal pillar strength from failed cases.A modified coal pillar design representation and model are presented based on coal pillars acting to reinforce a horizontally stressed overburden, rather than suspend an otherwise unstable self-loaded overburden or section, the latter having been at the core of historical empirical studies into coal pillar strength and stability.INTRODUCTIONThe inspiration for this paper is founded in three statements from two eminent persons in the field of coal pillar strength research, Jim Galvin and Essie Esterhuizen, as follows:Both Salamon and Munro and [the University of New South Wales] based the derivation of their pillar strength formulae on a criteria that the diameter of a panel of pillars, W, had to at least equal the depth of mining, H. This was thought to result in full tributary loading. It is now known that there are some mining environments included in both the South African and Australian databases in which mining span must exceed depth by a considerable margin in order to achieve full deadweight loading. Hence, it is logical to conclude that these data points may have contributed to pillar strength being overestimated by Salamon and Munro and UNSW (underline added by authors). Normally, this should be of no consequence because it is reflected in the probability of design success associated with any given safety factor (Galvin, 2006)."

"In regular CIL circuits, activated carbon is used for two purposes: avoiding solid/liquid separation after cyanide leaching, and minimizing gold losses in the tails. The carbon distribution and gold profiles in the successive CIL stages are operating variables, not objectives. When the CIL feed contains a preg robbing constituent however, such as native carbon, there will be competition for gold cyanide and this conflicts with minimizing of losses of gold to CIL tails. This paper examines some of the limitations of activated carbon in CIL circuits handling preg robbing Carlin Trend ores.INTRODUCTION Carbon-In-Leach (CIL) has been a great success treating regular gold ores, but the technology is still challenged by preg robbing feedstocks. Little information is available in the gold milling literature on CIL gold extraction from “free” milling gold ores which are preg robbing, or on autoclave discharge (POX’ed) slurries of double refractory ores. Neither feedstock is readily available for experimentation. No literature reference could be found describing deliberate modifications to CIL operations or CIL circuits due to the presence of two types of carbon: “native” and activated. There is some literature on the gold cyanide adsorption activity of native carbons (Schmitz, Duyvesteyn, Johnson, Enloe & McMullen, 2001). Various tests have been devised to measure this activity, commensurate with CIP and CIL practices (Tretbar, Arehart & Graves). In this paper, the term “native” carbon indicates (severely) preg robbing carbonaceous materials found in gold ores. There is considerable literature on the gold cyanide adsorption activity of man-made “activated carbons”. Various tests have been devised to measure this activity, commensurate with CIP and CIL practices. These tests are comparative, i.e. results relate to a standard carbon and depend on the test methodology and carbon history. "Several studies have been carried out to determine how the optimum atmosphere conditions in the heat treatment of metals can be established for a given product by using different gas injectors and varying atmosphere flow rate and composition. The most common approach taken to gain insight into furnace atmospheres has been to use commercial computational fluid dynamics codes and examples of their use are shown. However, the complexity of these codes, the difficulty in establishing boundary conditions, their cost and computational demands limit their usability in solving day-to-day production problems.A simplified, web-based model of a furnace atmosphere is described where the conservation equations are solved to determine the composition profiles of the atmosphere in the furnace. Although the model is restricted in scope to certain types of furnace, it is shown to give better results than CFD when boundary conditions are uncertain. The application of the model to the understanding of existing furnace conditions and to determining ways of optimising the use of gases are discussed. IntroductionThe important role of protective atmospheres during heat treatment of metals, furnace brazing of assemblies and soldering of printed circuit boards is well established. The atmosphere in the furnace prevents air ingress and oxidation of the parts, helps flush away any flux or binder from braze and solder pastes and provides an important mode of heat transfer [1]. In a batch furnace having typically one or two gas injectors, the gas utilisation and process can be optimised by minimising air leaks and mantaining atmosphere homogeneity with fans or other atmosphere circulation techniques. In a continuous furnace, however, atmosphere optimisation is more difficult as furnace inlets and exits can also let in air. The atmosphere requirements of different stages of heat treatment, brazing or soldering vary [2]. Achieving these atmospheres in different sections of the open-ended furnace is a relatively complex task. Methods such as atmosphere zoning and the use of physical curtains and gas injectors have evolved with time, though it is hard to predict how effective these techniques will be for a given furnace and process. Experts in the field tend to rely on experience and rules-of-thumb rather than scientific method to achieve the required results."
