Abstract This paper lists the interests of the Physical Metallurgy and Chemical Research laboratories of the Metallgesellschaft, which were visited by the authors, members of a group of Canadian investigators sent to Germany by the Department of Reconstruction in 1945. The Physical Metallurgy Research Laboratory The following information was obtained from Professor E. Schmid, Chief of the laboratories. It is understood that Dr. Schmid is a former Nazi and was to be removed from his post in November (1945). Aluminium Research The laboratories investigated the corrosion resistance of the high-strength aluminium-magnesium-zinc alloys. The same test procedure as used by V.L.W. was followed and Dr. Schmid co-operated closely with Dr. Brenner on this project. Intercrystalline corrosion was combatted by additions of chromium, titanium, or vanadium, and the work in this field parallels that of Dr. Brenner of V.L.W. * Dr. Schmid reports that Bollenrath and Siebert believe that corrosion difficulties with these alloys can be overcome to some extent by heat treatment. He himself was of opinion that the correct answer lay not only in correct alloying but also in correct heat treatment. The heat treatment involved either interrupted quenching or a change in quenching rate from a solution temperature of 500°C. The procedure is either a slower cooling from solution temperature or an interrupted cooling with a holding period at l50°C. Work had been done on piston alloys, the 11-13% Si, 1% Ni, 1% Cu, and 1% Mg being the favoured material. This is called Lo-Ex and is similar to Mahle 124 or KS1275.

TUNGSTEN has the highest melting point of all the known metals, namely 3350° C.; it is one of the hardest of the metals; it has the highest equiaxing or recrystallization temperature after strain hardening, of any pure metal known. It is particularly distinguished because, when composed of small equiaxed grains, it is extremely. brittle and fragile at room temperature, and when possessing a fibrous structure it maybe ductile and pliable at room temperature. The common ductile metals act in exactly the opposite manner in this respect. The present paper will include a brief note regarding the manufacture of wrought and. ductile tungsten. The metallography of wrought and ductile tungsten in the various stages of manufacture will be considered more or less in detail. The general relationships between the properties of tungsten and other metals will also be considered. A discussion will be given explaining why fibrous tungsten is ductile at room temperature, even though past experience with other metals would indicate that it should be brittle. Finally, a brief note regarding some new fundamental metallographic propositions relating to all metals will be given.

SEAMLESS pipe, the product produced from piercing a solid round billet of steel by the Mannesmann process, was first produced in the latter half of the 19th century, the Mannesmann machine having been patented in 1885. The products of other processes also have been termed seamless pipe; for example, the cylindrical section produced by "cupping," which consists of forming a cup from a flat plate or disk and further elongating the cup into a tube by passing it through a set of reducing dies. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the more important metallurgical factors and their relationship to the economical production of seamless pipe produced by the Mannesmann piercing process. The first seamless tube plant in America was established at Shelby, Ohio, in 1891, and was employed in the manufacture of bicycle tubing. For a number of years the bicycle industry was the only user of seamless tubing, and this tubing was produced by hot-rolling pierced billets imported from Europe and finishing on the cold drawbench. At the turn of the century, the automotive industry was responsible for an increase in the demand for seamless tubing. The growth of this industry was the dominant factor leading to the phenomenal growth of the petroleum industry, which in turn created a tremendous demand for seamless pipe. In addition; the old lapweld iron boiler tubes for stationary and locomotive boilers were replaced gradually by seamless tubes. Since 1929, the production of seamless steel pipe and tubes has increased over loo pct. In 1929, 1,459,9031 net tons of seamless pipe was produced, including both hot-finished and cold-drawn material, as compared with 3,087,3122 net [ ] tons in 1948. Table I gives the distribution of seamless pipe by classes for 1948. METALLURGICAL PROBLEMS From a metallurgical standpoint, the production of seamless pipe has presented many problems. Practically every type of steel, carbon and alloy, with the exception of the superalloys developed during World War II, has been pierced and rolled successfully into tubing. This includes bessemer, open hearth, by the stationary and duplex processes, and electric steels. The range of sizes produced is no less staggering to the imagination, when it is considered that the hypodermic needle, which is 0.016 in. diam with a wall thickness of 0.004 in., and pipe for gas or oil transmission lines, with a 26 in. In the early operations of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company, which extended from 1914 to 1926, the ore as mined contained principally sulphide copper minerals, manly chalcocite (Cu2S), This ore was milled in a 20,000-ton concentrator and the copper was recovered as a flotation concentrate which, was smelted at the nearby plant of the I ternational Smelting and Refining Company. In those days no attempt was made torecovercopper from any oxide minerals present. As mining operations progressed it soon became evident that the proportion of oxide minerals present would steadily increase, and. it was realized that some method of treatment would have to be developed whereby copper could' be recovered from both oxide and. sulphide minerals contained in the ore. A research program was instituted and after some years of experimental and, pilot plant work a new hydro-metallurgical process was developed whereby it became possible to extract copper from both the oxide and. sulphide minerals in a single leaching operation. The solvent adopted consisted of a mixture of sulphuric acid and ferric sulphate,' Following dissolution, the dissolved copper would be recovered by electrolysis. Also in the process of electrolyzing, spent solutions of sulphuric acid, H2SO4, and. ferric sulphate, Fe2(SOk)3, would be regeneratede and. somade available for continuous reuse. The process appeared to be a success and the decision was made to build a full-sized leaching plant for the future treatment of I spiration mixed ore. Construction was started and the leaching plant was completed in 1926, With the start of ferric-sulphate leaching the Inspiration Concentrator was shut down and, with the exception of a few short time runs has not operated since that time. The ferric sulphate leaching process served. Inspiration well for some 30 years and during that time won a name for itself as a classic example of hydro-metallurgical treatment of mixed sulphide oxide ores. Originally the plant was designed. to process some 7,500 tons per day of a mixed ore containing about 1,2% copper, of which 60% was present as oxide and. 40% as sulphide, Down through the years various improvements were made for the purpose of increasing plant capacity and as well to change the limiting 'factor of sulphide-oxide ratio, The final result was a leaching capacity of 9,600 tons per day when treating a 1% copper ore with a reversal of the sulphide-oxide ratio to 60% sulphide and 40% oxide.

The recovery of sulfur dioxide from metallurgical gases for the production of sulfuric acid has been the primary means of reducing sulfur dioxide emissions from nonferrous smelters. Sulfuric acid has been produced from gas originating from fluid bed roasters, electric furnaces, reverberatory furnaces, flash smelting furnaces, Pierce Smith and flash converters, sinter machines, etc. The gas from each of these sources has a unique set of variables that affect the design and operation of the sulfuric acid plant. In addition, the sulfuric acid plant itself has been evolving, with new equipment designs and materials. This paper will review each of the unit operations in the gas cleaning and contact sections of the metallurgical sulfuric acid plant, discussing various equipment designs, materials and the handling of gas stream variables and impurities. The paper updates to 2007 previous works on metallurgical sulfuric acid plants by the authors, and analyzes new equipment and systems, including: FRP or alloy quench systems, alloy converters, towers and pump tanks, heat recovery systems, high efficiency mist eliminators, tower packing, etc.

Were it simply a matter of extracting tin from the simple tin sulphide, the proposition would undoubtedly be simple enough. When, however, other valuable metallic sulphides are combined with the tin, and it is required to separate these intomarketable products, then the proposition becomes somewhat complex, and such is the case with the class of material of which I am about to write. The locality where it occurs is Howell, New South Wales, and chiefly at the Conrad Silver-Lead Mine. The tin sulphide occurs chemically alloyed with copper, iron and other metals associated with galena, pyrites, mispickel, blende and silver sulphide in varying proportions, and generally in a gangue of highly crystallised quartz.Several varieties of tin sulphides occur, and from the following analyses of three minerals, these being specimens specially selected free from foreign matters, it will be seen that the chemical composition is somewhat complex.

Mr. H. W. GEPP said he desired to bring particular attention to this paper. The underlying intention of the Development and Migration Commission when the paper was prepared was to place at the disposal of Australian miners and metallurgists the story of the development of tin metallurgy as it had been advanced in other countries, particularly Great Britain. They had very considerable resources of low-grade tin-bearing metals in the eastern coast of Australia particularly, and they need not anticipate that tin was going to remain at the extremely low price at which they saw it to-day. The Commission felt that it was most desirable to place 'on record, and make easily available, the story of the treatment of comparatively low-grade tin ores in other parts of the world.Arrangements were made that the technical staff at Australia House, in conjunction with Mr. H. S. Elford; should collect this information so that in due course, when Australia awoke to an interest in low-grade deposits, of which there were many throughout Australia, this story would then not,have to be gathered from other areas and other places of the world. The -paper was a contribution which would turn out to be of very great value. He suggested to the younger members that this thorough contribution could be made the subject of study so that they would be ready to assist in the developments which must come. Mr. WM. APLIN said there was one point in connection with the paper upon which he would like to speak. While at Mount Morgan he had occasion to test some highly pyritic tin ore by flotation, with a view to separating the cassiterite from the pyritic mineral.Instead of accomplishing that, it was discovered that it would be possible to eliminate as much as 50% of the total weight of ore in the form of a pyritic flotation concentrate, which would contain...

AN extensive program of investigation is being carried out at Lehigh University in the study of arcs and arc welds of high-purity iron1, spon-sored by the Engineering Foundation. The part of that program reported in the present paper deals with welds made of high-purity iron in an argon atmosphere and for comparison with them welds made of the same iron in ordinary air. Welds of commercial steel also were made in argon and in air. The primary purpose of the study is to discover the basic physical constants of iron welds when not contaminated either by impurities in the iron or by the action of oxygen and nitrogen of the air during welding. Upon these constants can be founded such future studies as will determine what effects the various impurities and alloy elements present in steel have upon its welding characteristics, and what influence is exerted by the action of oxygen and nitrogen. The welding of steel involves such a multitude of variables, both of composition and of procedure, that development in the fabrication of this most important metal has necessarily been slow, wasteful, and in many instances discouraging. In the present investigation, the simplest possible condition has been selected; namely, iron practically free from contamination and a nonparticipating atmosphere, the inert gas argon. This simplification reduces the number of variables to a point where more rigid control of the system is possible. Although this study is significant for the contributions it makes to the science of steel fabrication, yet it is hoped that it will not be without value also in increasing knowledge of the nature and behavior of iron and steel in general. Linepipe steels have come a long way in the past forty years. In fact, modern, high strength steels for large diameter linepipe applications represent one of the seminal accomplishments in metallurgy of the past half-century. The synergy of advanced steelmaking, alloy design including microalloying, hot rolling, and interrupted accelerated cooling has led to the marvelous steels being used today. The drive for higher performance pipelines has been motivated by the energy sector of our global economy who wanted both higher throughput capacity, i.e., larger diameters and higher pressures, and lower material cost, i.e., relatively thinner gauge wall thicknesses. These requirements led to new steels with higher strengths, better toughness and improved weldability. The goal of this paper is to trace the evolution of linepipe steels from the X60 grades of the small diameter pipelines of the 1960s to the (X80 - X120) grades used in the large diameter pipelines of today. The metallurgical triumphs permitting this success story, e.g., clean steel practices, controlled rolling, microalloying with Nb, and using IAC to obtain low temperature transformation products, will be highlighted and discussed.

A brief description of the hydro-gen reduction of nickel from ammoniacal solutions by the Sherritt process is given, indicating how this procedure can now be used to coat a great number of materials -particularly powders -with nickel or cobalt, whereby so-called composite powders are produced. The technique for the production of composite powders is described, particularly with regard to the surface activation of noncatalytic powders, whereby it is possible to coat core powders uniformly with nickel or cobalt. The properties of some of the more interesting composite powders, such as Ni/ AI, Ni/WC, Co/WC, Ni/Graphite and i/P, are discussed as well as possible fields of application for these new products. INTRODUCTION DURING the last decade, no-table advances have been made in pressure hydrometallurgy, so that large quantities of three of the more com1r.on metals, copper, cobalt and nickel are now produced on a commercial scale by hydrometallurgical processes.

Gold, silver and platinum-group elements occur normally in very low concentrations in their ores. Because their market value is in many situations high enough to justify their full recoveries, mineralogical studies before any routine recovery is attempted are particularly important for the description of their manner of occurrence and decision on the appropriate recovery techniques. Gold and silver, although sometimes treated by similar metallurgical processes, may require different approaches and treatments because of the different manner in which they occur in their ores: gold has a relatively simple mineralogy limited to native gold, electrum and less often tellurides. Silver has a very complex mineralogy including over 200 different minerals. On the other hand, gold is more often than silver recovered from ores where its fine grain size requires the breaking of the host minerals by chemical methods. Mineral, grain sizes and host minerals all affect the metallurgy of the platinum-group elements..

A discussion at a joint meeting of the New York Section of the American Electrochemical Society and the American Institute of Mining Engineers, Nov. 20, 1913. Chairman Lawrence Addicks:-Our program this evening represents an attempt to set before you the present situation and outlook in the metallurgy of zinc. It is a time-honored custom to throw bricks at the zinc man. The accusation is that he has borrowed a lime kiln and a gas retort and part of a sulphuric acid plant, hitched them together, and spent the last 50 years in regarding with holy veneration the reactions which take place in that retort. The copper man, who thinks of zinc as something with which copper is adulterated to make brass, and the iron man, who regards it as a sort of paint for corrugated sheets, and the lead man, whose opinion as to zinc is not fit for publication, have long felt that, when two or three of the minor details of their respective metallurgies were put in order, they would take a few clays and fix up zinc on a modern basis. But somehow there still seem to be some unsolved problems at home, and while we are waiting it seems only fair that the case for the defense should be adequately presented. There is probably no man in this country to-clay better able to do this than Mr. George C. Stone, of the New Jersey Zinc Co., on whom I have pleasure in calling to talk to us on "Progress in the Metallurgy of Zinc." George C. Stone:-It is frequently stated that there has been no change in the metallurgy of zinc since the first Belgian furnaces were built in the early part of the last century. It is true there have been no such spectacular and radical changes as were worked in the metallurgy of copper and iron by the introduction of converters; but, in the essentials, I believe the progress in zinc metallurgy has been as great as in that of the other common metals. The main reason that there have not been revolutionary changes is that the chemistry of zinc differs radically from that of the other metals and these differences control the type of apparatus that can be used. The differences are: 1. The temperature at which zinc is reduced by carbon is much above the volatilizing point of the metal and it is therefore always produced as a vapor.

INTRODUCTION Mineral commodities are normally separated into three generic classes-metals, nonmetals, and energy minerals including oil and gas as well as the solid fuels. Metals, the focus of this chapter, encompass a large number of different substances. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, for in- stance, has commodity specialists following trends in over 40 metal products of importance to the country's economy and well being. Ranging from aluminum to zirconium, the metals display an incredible degree of diversity. Some such as lead are heavy, others such as magnesium are light. Some such as copper are good conductors of electricity. Others such as silicon are semiconductors. Mercury is found in liquid form, while some metals melt only when heated to extremely high temperatures. Iron and steel, aluminum, and copper are consumed in particularly large tonnages in a multitude of end uses, while many minor metals are needed in only small amounts in a few highly specialized applications. The use of some metals can be traced back into history for millennia, indeed back to the bronze and iron ages, while the commercial consumption of aluminum and other newer metals is less than a hundred years old. Some metals are extracted from large open pits, others are dug out of deep underground mines, and still others are processed from the sea. Mining and processing can be relatively uncomplicated and inexpensive, though in most instances highly sophisticated technology is necessary and the costs are high. Some metals are produced mainly as byproducts of other metals. Some are recovered in large quantities from the scrap of obsolete equipment and demolished buildings. Some are mined in only a few locations and traded worldwide, others are produced in many different countries. Some are sold by numerous firms at fluctuating prices determined on competitive commodity exchanges, others are produced by only a handful of firms and sold at stable producer-prices. This diversity makes the metals interesting, indeed fascinating, to study. Yet, it also poses problems, for each metal in its own way is unique. There is no general model or economic analysis applicable to all metals. Rather each must be considered individually, so that the analysis or model takes explicit account of its particular features. This means that a single chapter cannot begin to cover comprehensively the economics of all metals, and no attempt to do so is made here. Instead, we will concentrate on illustrating the usefulness of relatively simple economic principles, particularly those associated with supply and demand analysis, in understanding the behavior of metal markets. The next section begins by exploring the nature of metal demand. It is followed by an investigation of metal supply- from individual product production, from by- product and coproduct production, and from secondary production. The final section then illustrates the usefulness of the concepts introduced in earlier sections by using them to analyze

MINE safety is of the utmost importance to all operators and most operations have a safety organization, or safety inspector, whose job it is to be continually on the alert to detect and correct the hazards of mine operation. Reports from the Bureau of Mines show that next to roof falls, gas presents the greatest hazard in mining. The Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6680 shows that 162 explosions occurred in the United States during the five-year period ending June 30, 1932. Deaths resulting from these explosions amounted to 984, with a great many disabled and disfigured. A fatality rate of 6.07 persons shows the ex¬treme severity of this hazard to the industry. Various mine appliance companies have put on the market instruments for methane detection, which record in direct percentages the amount of methane present in the atmosphere. Unfortunately, few mining companies are using these instruments, however. Those available include the Burrell methane detector, the Wolf, the Martienssen, the Mine Safety Appliance detector, and the Union Carbide Company methane detector, which last I have used extensively in making mine inspections.

HAVING taught you to make aqua fortis and to cleanse and reduce it to perfection, before I teach you the work of parting on a large scale, I wish now to teach you how to make an assay of the amount of gold present in a quantity of silver, so that you may proceed to your work with open eyes in order to become aware of mistakes when you have erred yourself or have been deceived by someone else. Therefore it is necessary to know very exactly, before you take it out, how much gold should be in your cucurbits from the weight of the silver that you put in. Thus you may see the gain or loss, if you had to deliver it to someone else or if you had bought it. If you did not do this you would proceed blindly in your work.

THE good and lofty men of intelligence are constantly discoverers of many beautiful things, because of their kindness or because they are driven by necessity. Either they shorten the method of making them after they have seen them, or they think how they can be increased in power or how they can be used for various effects in addition to the one intended by the inventor. Certainly all the effects described to you in this Tenth Book derive from gunpowder. When so many proper- ties and so much strength were observed in this, it was thought that by enclosing it in some strong thing that had the power to resist it, gunpowder would produce a marvelous effect. And thus they made a tube of bronze or iron [160v] which they closed with a wooden plug. They applied fire, and when they saw how forcefully this plug issued they thought of making one that would come out and strike in order to destroy things. IF you do not make the disc at the same time as the core and as part of it, it is necessary to make it by itself. This is done by spreading on a board or other flat surface a layer of clay as thick and wide as [88] the disc that you made at the feeding head of the first pattern of the gun. When it is dry, mark it exactly with compasses and then, cutting with a chisel or rasp, make it fit exactly into the empty space at the head. Likewise, make a hole just as wide as the thickness of the core exactly in the middle of this clay disc. When you have put the disc in its place in the mould and then pass the core through this hole, it passes exactly through the center of the mould in such a way that it meets the iron ring that you put at the foot of the mould for this purpose. As I said above, if' you do not make it as part of the core, it is necessary to proceed in the aforesaid way. THE ladle is a small hearth made on a cage of iron bars like a bird-cage, and has a handle so that it can easily be taken from the forge and carried wherever desired. It is a common device and is much used among masters for small castings, but with a large weight you would have difficulty in lifting it by hand even though you were aided by levers and winches. If you should indeed do it, it would be just as if you had lifted the aforesaid hearth by force, and this would be unwise if you could do anything less difficult. A forge is likewise made for this, with a good pair of large bellows that are well covered with cloth. When the small hearth has been made with good clay, baked, and well covered with ashes, it is placed in front of the mouth [of the bellows] and a crown of two or three brick ends is built around it on top of the rim so that the charcoal may be held better and in greater quantity. Then, having lit the fire and heated the ladle and the charcoal, the pieces of material that you wish to melt are gradually put on

AS you and anyone else can understand, a great expense and a large supply of things are necessary for parting a quantity of silver by means of aqua fortis. First, as you have seen, it is necessary to have a great abundance of every kind of cucurbit and alembic, of charcoal and wood, and a large number of pounds of a vigorous, well-purified aqua fortis, because for every pound of silver there are of necessity [71v] at least four pounds or more employed from the parting to the coloring of the separated gold. It is also necessary to prove its fineness and to granulate or beat it, to have furnaces and supplies, and to provide for a thousand other necessities which need not be repeated now. The most important thing in this art seems to me to be that it requires continual working night and day with extreme watchfulness and care. For this reason another way, much quicker, less dangerous, and less expensive than the aforesaid one was found by some clever men (alchemists, I believe) in order to avoid such laborious and heavy methods. It produces the substance of the thing exactly as the acid does. If you wish to make use of it in conjunction with the acid it is possible to render great aid to this work although there is a great difference in the techniques of the two. The method used in this parting is as follows: First, make a round or square wind furnace for melting, below ground or above, and of height and size in proportion to the work and as it comes out best for you. Then take a large clay crucible and fill it almost up to the edge with that silver which contains the gold, cut into pieces, and put it to melt with the silver on top of a piece of brick cut to the size of the bottom of the crucible and resting on a grate in the middle of coals that are burning well. When you see that the silver has been made so hot by the fire that it looks white and that it wishes to begin to liquefy, take a little stick of sulphur or a small piece of antimony and put it in. When this is melted, lifting away the charcoal that covers it, put in more sulphur or antimony (for the method is the same with either one) until the silver is very well melted and these materials properly incorporated. Then for every pound of silver that you put in add half an ounce of sheet copper. When this is melted take your crucible out with tongs or pincers and strike the bottom gently on the coals two or three times so that the gold may make a residue on account of
