Cobalt basic carbonate particles were precipitated from 1.0mol cobalt nitrate or cobalt sulfate solution with ammonia carbonate. By controlling the zeta-potential of the particles and the ionic strength of the solution, the uniform particles with ellipsoid or rod shapes were obtained. During the precipitation process, the interface tension was diminished to the minimum and therefore the Ostwald ripening and secondary nucleation were both inhibited. The morphology and the size control by zeta-potential seem to be the result of thermodynamics rather than classical crystalline kinetics. The particle sizes were in the range of 0.4-0.6, 0.3-0.4 micrometer. After thermolysis, the spinel-type C0304 particles were produced. The morphologies of C0304 particles were similar to that of their precursors.

"Abstract - The Mount Fronsac North volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit is the most recently discovered massive sulfide body in the Bathurst Mining Camp. The deposit occurs within a sequence of intercalated fine-grained felsic tuff and sedimentary rocks (Little Falls member), at the top of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation. Aphyric to sparsely feldspar-phyric rhyolite and related volcanic rocks of the Flat Landing Brook Formation overlie the host sequence. The massive and semimassive parts of the deposit have a north-south strike length of 525 m and a dip of ~45°E; the deposit is continuous downdip for 600 m, and thickness varies from 2 to 20 m. The deposit contains an estimated geologic resource of 14 Mt of low-grade, semimassive (>60%) to locally massive sulfides, and includes a high-grade zone of 1.26 Mt grading 7.65% Zn, 2.18% Pb, 0.14% Cu, 40.3 g/t Ag, and 0.40 g/t Au. The semimassive to massive sulfide intersections occur in an envelope of quartz-sericite±chlorite schist, which is interpreted to be intensely deformed felsic tuff. This sequence has a maximum thickness of 140 m and contains significant (up to 50%) fine- to coarse-grained disseminated pyrite. The pyritic envelope has a strike length of 900 m and extends over 1000 m downdip. Massive sulfides are found throughout this alteration envelope, but more commonly occur at or near the upper contact. The significance of the discovery of this deposit is that it represents a near surface discovery of a large tonnage sulfide body in a mature mining camp, one in which the possibility of discovery of a new shallow deposit had been all but discounted. This opens the possibility for future discoveries in this part of the Bathurst Mining Camp. THE PROPERTY of Mount Isa Mines, Ltd., is located at Mount Isa, Northern Queensland, Australia, at roughly 20" south latitude. It is 600 miles from Townsville on the east coast, the port for Mount Isa, 1200 miles from Brisbane and approximately 1600 miles from Sydney in New South Wales. Living conditions in the camp, though wild and crude at the commencement of building, are now excellent and little has been left undone to provide comfort and attractiveness. The climate being warm and dry, many of the buildings are built on posts, 8 to 10 ft. off the ground, with spacious screened-in verandas. Club houses, stores, school, hospital and ice plant have all been provided by the company as well as modern conveniences, such as running water, shower baths, electric lights, septic tank arrangements, tennis courts and amusement grounds.

IT frequently occurs in the establishment of reduction works, in an entirely new and untried mining district, that the metallurgist in charge finds considerable difficulty in determining the process best adapted to the ores which he receives for treatment. At the first glance it would seem easy enough to decide what style of furnace is best adapted for beneficiating any one class of minerals. If the ore possessed a quartzose gangue and was comparatively free from base metals, while salt could be obtained at a reasonable price, one would naturally resort to a chloridizing roasting, and pan or barrel amalgamation for the extraction of its silver contents. If galena or carbonate of lead was the prevailing mineral, and charcoal could be obtained at moderate figures, the blast-furnace would beneficiate the ores most advantageously. But if, as is usually the case in Colorado, the ores consisted of an intimate mixture of galena, zinc-blende, copper-pyrites, and noble silver minerals, associated with an overwhelming mass of siliceous heavy spar, or limestone gangue, the common reverberatory furnace can be used to the greatest advantage; and, although the product is only a copper matte, I do not hesitate to affirm that it can be treated, and the silver, gold, and copper produced at nearly the same price for which silver and lead can be separated. In Germany, blast-furnaces are frequently used for this same purpose, both for argentiferous and non-argentiferous copper ores ; but any one who will take the trouble to examine the statistics of smelting at Fahlun, the Oberharz, and other Continental works of this description, will see that the expenses are far too great, and the production much too small to think of employing this method in our mining districts, where only the softest and most miserable kind of charcoal is obtainable. I propose in this paper to give an accurate account of the expenses incurred at the Mount Lincoln Smelting Works in treating the same kind of ore, and producing the same end-product in both blast and reverberatory furnaces. I have taken for comparison a favorable campaign of the blast-furnace, and a good average month's running of the reverberatory. "Mount Polley is an alkalic porphyry copper-gold deposit of Lower Jurassic age within the Quesnel terrane in south-central British Columbia. The silica-saturated Mount Polley intmsive complex is assumed to be coeval with volcanic rocks of similar composition in the Nicola Group in which it was emplaced. Other intmsions and some of the volcanic rocks in the Mount Polley area are silicaundersaturated and contain feldspathoids.The Mount Polley deposit is characterized by multiple intrusions that vary from diorite to crowded plagioclase porphyry to monzonite. Intmsion breccias are associated with some of the intmsive phases. Abundant hydrothermal breccias occur on the margins and above plagioclase porphyry intmsions. These breccias provide the main host for mineralization and are associated with the highest concentrations of copper and gold. The breccias are subdivided into four distinct types based on the dominant hydrothermal mineral in the matrix. Actinolite breccia is developed in an elongate zone within the core of the Central zone and grades laterally and vertically into biotite breccia to the southeast. Magnetite breccia is irregularly distributed and is relatively sparse throughout the deposit and albite breccia is dominant in the West zone. Pervasive and vein-related alteration correlates with the breccia types. The core of the hydrothermal system at Mount Polley is subdivided into three zones: actinolite, biotite and K-feldspar-albite. The margins of the core zone are overprinted by a discontinuous zone of calc-silicate minerals. This intermediate zone passes outward into propylitic alteration. Mineralization is most prominent within hydrothermal breccias and is generally present as disseminations, blebs within the matrix and abundant veins. Mineralization is associated with a chalcopyrite-magnetite-bornite assemblage in the core of the deposit passing out into magnetite-pyrite-chalcopyrite. Relatively constant copper to gold ratios suggest that both metals were precipitated under similar conditions.Hydrothermal breccias are genetically related to the emplacement of the crowded plagioclase porphyry melt. Crystallization of the melt was probably accompanied by volatile/aqueous exsolution, forming a water saturated carapace. Decompression of the chamber in response to magma withdrawal, fracture propagation and possible fault movement allowed hydrothermal brecciation to occur at the apex and margins of the intmsion. Alteration and mineralization appears to have been controlled by fluids migrating away from the plagioclase porphyry."

"The Mount Tolman porphyry Mo-Cu deposit is 64 km south of Republic, Ferry County, Washington. It occurs in the composite Keller Butte pluton, which consists of the Keller Butte porphyritic biotite granite and granodiorite, the Mount Tolman quartz porphyry granite, and the Meadow Creek biotite granite phases. The three phases range in age from 61.3 Ma ± 2.3 Ma to 55.7 Ma ±2.0 Ma. The stockwork deposit occurs in the Keller Butte phase above the contact with the Mount Tolman quartz porphyry granite.Mount Tolman is a hybrid calc-alkaline deposit that has features of both a Climax-type and a plutonic type. Prior to post-ore faulting, the deposit had a flattened hood like shape. In plan it is elongated- 1.6 km wide, 3.2 km long, and up to 609 m thick. The orebody has a 292 o strike. It contains a geologic reserve exceeding 2.18 billion tonnes of ore averaging 0.093% MoS2 and 0.09o/o Cu using a 0.048% MoS2 cutoff. Of this total, 816 million tonnes of measured and indicated ore averaging 0.097% MoS2 and 0.09o/o Cu could be mined by open pit with an overall waste-to-ore ratio of 0.91 to 1.The deposit is a stockwork of quartz and quartz-sericite-pyrite veins and fracture fillings that contain molybdenite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and magnetite. Five separate episodes of fracturing and mineralization produced the orebody and were followed by four additional episodes of fracturing with sulrgrade mineralization. The Mount Tolman deposit contains propylitic, argillic, phyllic, topaz greisen, and potassic alteration zones. Extensive silicification overlaps the K-feldspathized, quartz-topaz, and phyllic alteration zones."

"There is certainly no argument that LED lighting systems have taken a strong foothold in the lighting marketplace over the last several years. This has even proven true in the world of transportation and transit lighting, for which new LED cobra head style luminaires are replacing traditional HID cobra head luminaires on North America’s roadwaysand linear LED light fixtures are replacing conventional linear fluorescent light fixtures in North American rail transit facilities. However, LED technology has taken a while longer to penetrate the very specific market of vehicular tunnel lighting in this continent. Though both the New York/New Jersey Holland and Lincoln Tunnels have recently been retrofitted with LED lighting, and an LED Lighting RFP is currently out for Boston’s Central Artery Tunnels, very few vehicular tunnels in North America to date have been illuminated with LED light fixtures. This is largely because cost effective LED lighting, that met our typically stringent tunnel lighting standards, was until recently simply unattainable. However, with the rapid advances in LED technology over recent years, owners and specifiers of North American tunnel lighting projects have finally begun to adopt LED lighting systems as the norm. In fact, a recent Lux Fit/Yole Development “LED in Road and Street Lighting Report” stated that “LED luminaire growth will be driven firstly by tunnel lighting, and then relayed into highway, road, residential and amenity lighting applications starting in 2014.” 1 Our highways are continually becoming more congested. As a result, Provincial and State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) are constantly looking for innovative ways to improve traffic flow. One way DOTs are now helping to ease congestion is by expanding the use of tunnels and long underpasses in large interchange reconstruction projects. With less available right-of-way to work with, and the high costs of maintaining elevated bridge structures over the years, it often makes more sense to “go under” (rather than over) the traffic congestion points. With the addition of these new tunnels and long underpasses comes the issue of proper illumination within these structures, for a safe and efficient driving task. DOTs use recommended lighting practices and guidelines for highway lighting, which include specific criteria for tunnels, set by either the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) or the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). However, both IESNA and AASHTO point out that these recommended practices and guidelines are not a mandate, and DOTs are free to make their own decisions about lighting criteria. Accordingly, effectively illuminating tunnels is often times a challenge. This paper will examine the key considerations of the tunnel lighting application in generalas well as what LEDs now bring to the table and how, accordingly, traditional lighting technologies will be phased out in the future illumination of tunnels."

"Over recent years, specifically following the MINER Act of 2006, an increasing number of manufacturers of underground mine seals in the United States have begun using a form of pumpable cement or shotcrete to create barriers separating the working and abandoned sections of underground coal mines. This seal material, while generally considered to be homogenous and solid, contains a network of microcracks, voids, and delaminations. Generally, it has been assumed that methane (CF4) leakage around these seals is a result of movement around the boundary interface between the seal and surrounding strata. Using a perfluorinated tracer compound, perfluoromethyl-cyclohexane (PMCH), the movement of gases can be monitored through seal material to observe how gases move though the material, both intact and with faulting in the material. This paper documents two large experiments where the movement of PMCH was monitored in the field, along with modeling confirmation using 3D visualization software. INTRODUCTION According to a report in 2007, there were over 14,000 active mine seals in underground U.S. coal mines alone (Zipf, Sapko, & Brune, 2007). These seals are used for both ventilation and safety purposes, to direct the flow of air away from the abandoned area of the mine and to help eliminate the propagation of explosions that can occur on the outby side of the mine seal. The atmosphere on the outby side of these seals typical consists of low levels of methane that have the potential of producing leakage along the face of the seal on the inby side. Methane leakage around mine seals has historically been attributed to the permeability between the seal and mine interface (McPherson, 1993). According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) between 2003 and 2012 an average of 17 deaths occurred annually in underground bituminous coals mines. The only time during the ten-year period where the fatalities were higher than the average was in 2006 and 2010, years which had three major explosions occurring in underground coal mines in West Virginia and Kentucky. Two of the explosions were propagated through the mine by seal failure or methane leakage around newly poured seals (Light, et al., 2007) (Gates, et al., 2006). These recent events, and new regulations regarding seal strength (MINER Act), have created a need to monitor the condition of underground mine seals. BACKGROUND Measuring the permeability of solid materials, such as concrete or seal materials, can be a valuable tool in the field of non-destructible testing (NDT). By using an inert gas, such as nitrogen, injecting the gas into a solid structure, and measuring the resultant flow rate and pressure differential, this can provide valuable information about the structure. Studies have shown permeability can be affected by the stresses applied to the structure, as well as temperature and moisture (Choinska, Khelidj, Chatzigeorgious, & Pijaudier-Cabot, 2007) (Abbas, Carcasses, & Olliver, 1999)."

The in situ rock mass rating system û IRMR - leading to the mining rock mass rating system - MRMR - for jointed rock masses has been used (and abused) in mining operations around the world for the past 27 years. Despite the recent development of elaborate design procedures and computer-aided design packages, MRMR remains one of the most versatile and practical mine design systems available. It is important to realise that the rock mass classification system should not be replaced but rather complemented by more sophisticated and detailed design procedures. The classification system is not only the æcrudeÆ method used for initial assessment (as described in some geotechnical literature) but also in many respects a very effective and practical engineering tool. MRMR could, and should be used during the entire stage of mine life as an integral part of the design process. The objectives of this paper are to illustrate using practical case histories from the past decade, some of the pitfalls of the MRMR classification system, to clarify certain misconceptions in its application and update its mining application.

Situated in the Greymouth Coalfield, the Mt Davy Block contains a significant resource of high quality bituminous coal suitable for use in metallurgical coking coal blends. The coal, which is all low sulphur, is seen as a complementary deposit to export coking coal at Stockton Mine.   Previous drilling by State Coal Mines (1948 - 1953) and Japanese interests (1970's) have been supplemented by Coal New Zealand drilling (1992 - 1993) and surface mapping. A mining feasibility study was completed in late 1993 and approval gained for the driveage of an exploratory tunnel to the target seam.   Following construction of surface facilities, tunnel driveage on a 1:5 decline commenced from Rewanui in May 1995 and to date about half the required length has been driven. When the seam is intersected a comprehensive geotechnical testing programme will be undertaken to assess the in-situ mining conditions. It is expected that the results will confirm the assumptions made in the feasibility study.   The Mt Davy Mine, at depths of 500 - 700 metres, will be the deepest underground coal mine ever inNew Zealand and in-situ stresses (orientation and magnitude) will be important considerations for mining engineering. The coal has a high gas content and suitable techniques for gas control and prevention/mitigation of coal outbursts will be necessary.   Mine development is scheduled to commence in mid 1998 and an annual production level of 500 000 tonnes is forecast. The coal seams will be developed by continuous miner and coal extraction will be by hydraulic monitor. Coal will be pumped to the surface and from Rewanui transported five kilometres to Dunollie either by truck or slurry pipeline. At Dunollie a coal dewatering plant, coal stockpile and rail loadout will be constructed.

The MTM Process targets treating lower grade and/or problem concentrates that are not attractive to smelters. The process has been developed at laboratory scale for copper and is based on a related development for zinc that has been extensively developed both in the laboratory and through pilot testing. The basis of the process is novel ammonia-ammonium chloride leach chemistry adapted to give high copper extraction whilst being selective over iron, arsenic and many other elements. The preferred flow sheet depends on location, especially infrastructure and utilities. These impact upon the leach and crystallisation stages more than copper reduction.

The valuable Maximum Utilization Factor (MUF) concept has been extended to other rotating excavators beyond stripping shovels and draglines. In this concept the boom reach and bucket capacity are multiplied to get an MUF, then normalized by dividing by the equipment weight. Statistical analyses were applied to the remaining shovels (hydraulic and cable), draglines, and backhoes. Positive correlations were found. Stripping shovels and draglines were also re-examined. The results provide an estimate of equipment diggability and encourage versatility by the interchange of the boom and the bucket. The concept further clarifies the existing equipment classification by delineating general excavating, loading, and stripping kinds. The results also forecast trends, and noted innovative advances and possible retrogression. Extension to other boom excavators, such as front-end loaders is recommended. The MUF concept provides one of the few indices of gross external characteristics available to the engineer-user of equipment.

THE Smelter is designed for a production capacity of 10,000 short tons of blister copper per month, when operating on the present concentrate grade. The Smelter lay-out is shown in Fig I. The major units of equipment comprise two reverberatory furnaces, three 13 by 30 ft Peirce-Smith converters, two straight line casting machines, one being served by a 13 by 30 ft holding furnace and the other by a ladle tilting quadrant, two converter ,aisle cranes and two converter blowers. The plant is compact and the general arrangement of standard gauge railway tracks and conveyor belts provides for a smooth flow of incoming materials and metallurgical products. Concentrate is received by conveyor belts and fluxes in standard railway trucks. The local track system is covered by an electric trolley locomotive. The Smelter treats a wet (10 pct moisture) flotation concentrate containing approximately 53 pct total copper and 0.9 pct oxide copper. The predominating minerals are chalcocite, chalcopyrite and bornite accompanied by small quantities of malachite and cuprite. The gangue is highly siliceous and requires limerock as a flux. Metallurgy would be straightforward were it not for the necessity for eliminating k bismuth which occurs as an impurity in the ore along with the copper. Directly or indirectly most of the Smelter problems can be traced to the necessity for bismuth removal. Copper recovery, based on new copper treated, averages 97.5 pct. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Flotation concentrate, containing to pct moisture, is conveyed from the filter plant to the smelter storage bins by conveyor belts, the material being weighed in transit by a revolving drum type of weigh-hopper manufactured by Samuel Denison and Son, Ltd. The weigher consists of a steel drum with dished ends carried on a horizontal shaft and rotated by an 8 hp squirrel-cage motor through a worm and spur reduction gear. A feed mouth in the drum permits of filling and discharging. The whole unit is supported on a framework resting on weighing levers, which in turn connect to transfer levers, thence to an indicator of the steelyard type situated 16 ft from the centre line of the drum. The indicator is of the "Denison" patent equilibrium controlled ticket stamping type, insuring mistake-proof records by a combination of electrical and mechanical movements which prevent the operator from printing until the cover enclosing the steelyard is closed and until the poise-weights have been set correctly to the weight of the hopper and contents. The machine is capable of weighing 30 short tons at a time but the usual load is 28 tons. After obtaining the gross weight the drum is rotated and discharged into a receiving bin situated below it. Mixed CrB2 and MoS2 powder (Cr:Mo=1:1 atomic %), without any further process, were used as the targets to be sputtered and deposited onto stainless steel and silicon substrates by pulsed DC power supply. The structures and properties of the CrBMoS films were then analyzed by using SEM, XRD, micro-hardness tester. The SEM morphology of the films showed dense, defect free structure, and the preferred orientations of the films were CrB2 (111) and MoS2 (200) according to XRD spectra. The thicknesses of the films were measured and the relationship between the deposition rates and pulsed factors was determined. The films, with the micro-hardness as high as 19GPa and friction coefficient as low as 0.02, could be considered to be the hard solid lubricant films.

In the Mining Industry, the means of handling and transferring lubricants has been given little attention over the years. An analysis of this process indicates that this neglect has often exacted a very high price. As the costs associated with labor, equipment utilization and waste disposal soar, the need for an efficient system takes on an increasing significance. Often the focus of bulk systems has been placed on the master container itself. Certainly, there is nothing new about a large lubricant container; they have been available over a period of years, known under a variety of names, "mini tank", "super drum", ?flo-bin" and "tote bin", to name but a few.

Fertilizer normally is spoken of as having three main components: nitrogen, phosphorus and pot- ash. Certainly, however sulfur must also be considered a basic component of fertilizers, even though in many instances it does not end up as a part of the end product. In addition, with heavier cropping and the resultant drain of plant foods from the soil, we have now reached a point where the minor elements necessary for plant growth have become a major factor in the fertilizer industry.

Abstract -The Murray Brook massive sulfide deposit, which was the first geochemical discovery in the Bathurst camp, is one of the largest sulfide deposits in the area. The massive sulfides are hosted by quartzose metasedimentary rocks in the lower part of the Ordovician Tetagouche Group. This thick succession of sedimentary rocks is overlain conformably by felsic volcanic rocks, and is structurally overlain by mafic volcanic rocks. The massive-sulfide body is polydeformed, but primary metal zoning is still discernable and may permit future exploitation of discrete lead-zinc and copper zones. Although it was discovered in 1956, the deposit was not developed unti11989, when Murray Brook Resources commenced processing of gossan containing precious metals. Recovery of gold, silver, and mercury is accomplished by indoor vat leaching on a year-round basis.

The massive-sulfide body is polydeformed, but primary metal zoning is still discernable and may permit future exploitation of discrete lead-zinc and copper zones. Although it was discovered in 1956, the deposit was not developed until 1989, when Murray Brook Resources commenced processing of gossan containing precious metals. Recovery of gold, silver, and mercury is accomplished by indoor vat leaching on a year-round basis.

"Qatar’s capital Doha is undergoing major infrastructure improvements including a multiphase stormwater management program. Although located in an arid climate, Doha experiences flooding during rainfall events. Dewatering operations and rising groundwater levels add to the management needs. To address those needs, construction of the Musaimeer collection tunnel along Doha’s southern rim is being followed by a marine outfall tunnel connecting a pump station to a dispersion field 10 km offshore. Qatar’s geology is characterized by sabkha deposits, a series of predominantly weak and karstic rock strata that creates challenging conditions for mechanized tunneling, as highlighted by the uncontrolled flooding of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) used on the Doha Metro tunnels. Risk associated with these challenges is magnified for the outfall tunnel by drive length, sub-sea elevation, and a single access point. This paper describes the outfall exploration strategy and design decisions made in light of experience gained during the collection tunnel construction. CONTEXT – STORMWATER MANAGEMENT PROGRAM Qatar has an arid climate with an average annual precipitation of less than 100 mm. Precipitation is mostly confined to the winter months when rare, but occasionally heavy rainfall events easily lead to flooding in Doha’s metropolitan area. Its coastal location and flat topography a few meters above the sea level mean that the depth to the groundwater table is generally shallow. The karstic aquifers in the regional dolomite and limestone series contain groundwater of high salinity, which is not suitable as a potable water source. For supplying Doha’s population of more than 900,000 (2014) with potable water, the Ras Abu Fontas seawater desalination plant is operated about 10 km south of the city. This potable water production capacity is crucial for Doha’s development and – in conjunction with overirrigation and leaking sewage tanks – is also the root cause for rising groundwater tables that have been observed over the past years."
