The smelting of the Broken Hill lead concentrates at the Broken Hill Asso,ciated Smelters produced, among other products, approximately 4,900 ounces of gold and 8,800,000 ounces of silver during the year ending June 30th, 1938. The following table shows the actual amounts of gold per ton of lead concentrate produced during this period at the important mines. The total gold in the period is calculated from the number of tons of lead concentrates produced, and by comparison with the production' of silver, shows thatthere is no constant relation between the amounts of gold and silver.The fact that no gold is seen during milling, even when gravity concentrating tables are employed, signifies that the gold does not occur as occasional coarse particles.Further, as the values increase considerably in the flotation slime, it can be inferred that the gold occurs as minute inclusions in one or more of the minerals in the lead concentrates.The four most abundant minerals in the lead concentrate are galena, zinc blende, chalcopyrite, and...

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) FOR many years there have been occasional reports of the discovery of gold from a belt of the coast country of Texas which is underlain by deposits belonging to the lower Eocene. For the most part they have been treated as newspaper reports and no examination or record of them has been made. Among such, it may be mentioned that in 1896 there was a flurry over reported gold-discoveries -west of Luling and elsewhere in this belt, and in 1903 some prospect-shafts were sunk on the Gonzales branch of the Galveston, Houston & San Antonio railway, 3 miles below Harwood. During 1912, further discoveries have again brought the matter to our attention, and it may be of interest to record the facts as we have found them. Some years ago specimens were sent me, which were said to have been taken from certain beds on Gazley creek, and concentrated by washing in it rocker. In them were several particles of gold sufficiently large to be visible to the eye. Under the microscope they showed to be, with few, exceptions, sharp cornered, and not rounded as is usual with placer-gold. They were not filings, however, but their sharpness seemed rather to be due to a recent freeing from their matrix. One or two grains were rusty, and one copper-hued, but the most of them were tolerably bright. On examining the material of the samples small grains or fragments were found, of a yellowish brown color, which seemed to be of a finely-granular structure-possibly a sandstone. In these fragments I found particles of gold, one of them being large enough to be visible without a lens. Gazley creek empties into the Colorado river just north of Smithville, and for a few miles north of that place its banks show, beneath the deposits of more recent materials, the sands and clays of the Lignitic division of the Eocene, with lignite, shells of iron, etc.

"Abstract - Gold-bearing quartz reefs commonly show extremely erratic and unpredictable grade variation, although gross geological continuity may be good. This type of variation is often described as being nuggety or having a high nugget effect and can be measured quantitatively using the semivariogram. Understanding of geological features such as reef texture and structure will provide improved models for the interpretation of assay data, drill core descriptions, etc. In this paper, a case study from the quartz-hosted gold occurrences in the Gwynfynydd mine, United Kingdom, is described. The work provides a starting point for models of lateral variation and demonstrates the types of structural and textural features that may be sought to give clues to the prediction of gold distribution in similar deposits. Gold deposition at Gwynfynydd is primarily associated with the reef footwall. The host veins form a discrete group of structures that may have been emplaced early in the sequence of quartz veins forming the reef. This potentially exposes them to a maximum number of dissection events during repeat dilations of the lode. Gold was deposited in the local porosity at extreme concentrations, equivalent to kg/t grades, when the host fissure had become filled with a porous framework of crystalline quartz and sulfides. Distribution of porosity varied laterally along the vein as the result of the formation of clump-like growths of minerals from the vein walls. The growth style is relevant to the distribution of gold although it may not be relevant to the occurrence of gold in a particular vein. The preservation of pores with some connectivity late in the vein fill sequence may be important in permitting continued but slow fluid flows. This facilitates effective fluid reaction with wall rock-derived methane, thus changing the relative rates of gold and quartz deposition in favor of gold. The textural studies explain the first-order control of nugget distribution at Gwynfynydd but do not allow for prediction and optimization of the resource estimation process. This is principally because of the very low geological continuity and poor predictability of the high-grade pockets. Nonetheless, the work does provide a clear geological explanation for the erratic nature of the gold. It indicates textures and structures that can be used to determine geological continuity of the goldbearing elements within the gross reef envelope."

"THE YEAR 1959 appeared to be a good one in which to attempt a summary of progress in the location and study of sulphide deposits in Canada because a temporary surplus of metals caused prices to fall and many geologists who had been working like beavers were suddenly not so hard pressed. So it was •decided to arrange a Symposium. The response to the call for contributions was excellent and the result is the interesting collection of papers that follow.Activity in the search for massive sulphide deposits has never been as intense as in Canada since 1954. That was the year when the airborne electro-magnetometer first became generally available on a contract basis. These instruments work best on massive sulphide bodies, as do most of the ground electrical survey devices, so much of the new information relates to these. It was decided, therefore, to focus attention in the preparation of symposium papers on such masses. This served also to keep the survey within reasonable limits."

SULPHIDE ore-bodies of more or less lenticular shape occurring in metamorphic crystalline schists, gneisses, and. slates, and conforming closely in strike and usually in dip to the inclosing rock, have been recognized and described along the, Atlantic seaboard from Quebec to Alabama. The ore-bodies do not entirely conform, in all cases, to the structure of the inclosing schists, but they sometimes cut across the foliation in dip, though conforming more closely with the direction of strike. In composition the principal sulphide mineral is usually pyrite or pyrrhotite; or both, accompanied by copper, frequently gold, and almost always some sphalerite and galenite. Other. metallic ores are, so far as these sulphide bodies have been investigated, less common; silver is not uncommon, and in some of the pyrrhotite masses nickel is present in quantity sufficient to be commercially valuable. Cobalt frequently accompanies .the nickel, usually in smaller amount, and the two vary much in relative proportion. Quartz and calcite are probably the most common of the, non-metallic minerals. A number of silicate minerals are frequent representatives in one place or another; garnet, amphibole, biotite, pyroxene, zoisite and others. The sulphide bodies of Virginia, comprising both pyrite and pyrrhotite, are among the most extensive along the Atlantic seaboard. Among the pyrite bodies may be mentioned the well-known and extensively worked mines of Louisa and Prince William, counties, located on' the main pyrite belt (A, Fig. 1) of the middle and northern, eastern Piedmont region in Virginia, and among the pyrrhotite bodies is the famous " Great Gossan Lead "(B, Fig. 1) of the Floyd-Carroll-Graysou coun-

THE occasional occurrence in metalliferous veins of rounded fragments of rock, matrix or ore, lying loose, embedded in clay, or enclosed in some kind of cement, may be attributed to four causes:¬ I. They have been washed in from the surface, or from an upper portion of the vein. II. They are of concretionary origin. III. They have been produced by movements in the country-rock or in the walls of the vein. IV. They have been found in situ, by the upward, downward or lateral flow of water in the vein itself. In this paper the word " conglomerate " is confined to a rock composed of rounded fragments or pebbles cemented together, as distinguished from a " breccia," in which the rock-fragments are angular. I. BOULDERS AND PEBBLES WHICH HAVE BEEN WASHED IN FROM THE SURFACE, OR FROM AN UPPER PORTION OF THE VEIN. In this type it is presupposed that the vein at onetime com¬municated by a fissure or open space with the surface, or with the upper portion from whence the fragments have been washed. One well-authenticated occurrence was described long ago by Fournet. Owing, no doubt, to later dislocations in the lode, pebbles from an old alluvium and sands containing titaniferous iron, as well as fragments of wood, were found in a vein at Huelgoët, in France. The characterisation of high-P iron ores by field emission gun electron probe microanalyser (FEGEPMA) was carried out to determine elemental associations in iron oxides sensus lato and, using this knowledge, to speculate on possible P incorporation mechanisms in goethite. Quantitative data was collected from two goethite-rich bulk ores and results showed that in both samples goethite was the main repository for phosphorus. The P-rich goethite also contained elevated levels of both aluminium and silicon.To understand the mechanism of P incorporation in goethite, high-P grains were located by coarse mapping of polished blocks with the FEG-EPMA. Analysis of element distribution maps collected on the P-rich grains showed that low-P regions within grains were typically associated with low-Al and high-Si, whereas high-P regions were associated with high-Al and low-Si. Based on follow-up quantitative analyses, a coupled substitution mechanism for phosphorus incorporation within goethite was proposed: 2Si4+ = 1P5+ + 1Al3+. Additional quantitative analyses on further examples indicated the mechanism was only valid for Si contents in goethite of <1 wt per cent.Preliminary transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies confirmed the presence of P, Al and Si in goethite.

I. INTRODUCTION. IN the summer of 1908, R. B. Cochran, Superintendent of the Compania Metalurgica Mexicana at Sierra Mojada, Mexico, presented to the Department of Geology and Mineralogy at Case School of Applied Science an interesting series of silver-, copper-, and lead-ores from the Veta Rica mine. These ores contained several interesting minerals which were associated in a somewhat peculiar manner, so that I was impelled to make a closer study of their occurrence. The investigation has brought out several new facts concerning the geology of the district and the geological occurrence of the ores, and therefore has seemed worthy of record. Two papers have been published previously about the region, one by Chism1 in 1887, and the other by Malcolmson2 in 1902. These articles, however, treat of the district more from the stand-point of the metallurgist and mining engineer, and not much attention is devoted to its mineralogy and economic geology. II. GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION OF THE DISTRICT. The Sierra Mojada is situated in the extreme western part of the State of Coahuila, near the Chihuahua boundary. It is reached best via the Mexican Central railroad from El Paso, Tex., to Escalon, Chihuahua, a distance of 494 miles. From this point, a branch line, the Mexican Northern railroad, runs 78 miles in a NE. direction to the mines, which are its northern terminus. Gold recovered on the strikes at the Central Norseman mill, Norseman, Western Australia, has an approximate assay fineness of 850. Bullion recovered from the cyanide plant at the mine is of much lower value, and occasionally its assay fineness has been as low as 250. This indicates either that the fine gold particles in the ore consist of an alloy richer in silver than the coarse particles or else that a silver mineral, as well as the gold, is dissolved by the cyanide solutions.It had been observed at the mine that the amount of silver in the bullion appeared to increase when galena appeared to be more abundant in the stoped ore. Interest was, therefore, attached to the possible occurrence of a silver mineral associated with galena and, at the same time, soluble in cyanide.Four specimens of ore from different horizons in the mine were collected by the mine staff for examination as to whether any marked difference in the fineness of gold was apparent on a polished surface and for determination of the silver minerals. As the Norseman ore-body is a quartz reef containing a very small percentage of sulphide, the specimens were selected either because they cont;:lined free gold or because they were, relatively rich in sulphides. They were obtained from the following localities at the Phoenix shaft.1. Level 16, section 28.2. Level 16, section 31.3. Level 8, section 31.4. Level 14, section 38.Specimens Nos. 1 and 2 were thus obtained from different positions at the same mining horizon, while specimens Nos 2 and 3 were obtained from different levels in the same vertical section of the mine.All the specimens consist of quartz characterized by thin, discontinuous seams of sericite and the presence of a little ankerite. Gold and sulphides tend to be localized along these seams, but particles of gold and sulphides are also scattered throughout areas of white quartz. This scattered distribution of the sulphides in relatively wide areas of quartz has involved the preparation of two or more polished sections from each specimen.The outcome of the microscopical examination of these specimens has been to determine that there is no appreciable variation in the colour of the polished particles of gold and, therefore, no marked difference in the amount of silver alloyed with the coarse and fine particles. The presence of small quantities of the tellurides sylvanite, hessite and altaite has been revealed, and found to vary in abundance with the abundance of galena.

The United States Department of the Interior's Office of Surface Mining (OSM) is responsible for regulating active coal mining and reclaiming abandoned coal mines in the United States. In working with the State government agencies that implement these programs, OSM is building a new approach that moves away from traditional "command and control" regulation and towards an approach that focuses on providing long-term environmental and economic sustainability on lands disturbed by coal mining. This initiative called "Reclaim the Future!" looks to enhance opportunities for economic development, wildlife preservation and enhancement, reforestation, and other beneficial and productive uses of lands disturbed by coal mining. The initiative is also focused on ensuring that the landowners and the local public have significant involvement in determining how best to reclaim mine sites and what post-mining land uses are most appropriate for each individual abandoned mine reclamation project or active mine reclamation. Through the use of the best scientific input in an open, participatory process, OSM hopes to further sustainable development principles for coal mining within the framework of existing United States law.

Oil and gas together are the most important energy sources consumed in the United States. In 1983, 67% of total energy consumption was represented by these two resources (43% was oil and 25% natural gas), while coal accounted for only 23% of U.S. energy use. All other sources (hydroelectric, nuclear, geothermal, wood and other waste products) accounted for only 10% (U.S. Department of Energy, 1983, p. 1). In this chapter we address the issue of regulation in the oil and natural gas sectors of the U.S. energy industry. In addition, we analyze the cartel characteristics of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). If OPEC is an effective cartel, then U.S. oil as well as substitute energy prices, production, and consumption will be affected by cartel action. Further, as the nation learned in the 1970s, major changes in oil prices produced major disturbances in other sectors of the U.S. and world economies. Consequently, it is important to determine whether the roughly ten-fold increase in nominal prices that occurred in the 1970s was the result of cartel action, the result of normal economic forces adjusting to the fact that the world was running out of cheap oil, or some combination of the two. Furthermore, the presence of OPEC- associated oil price increases is related to regulations that were imposed on the energy sector during the decade of the 70s. THE RATIONALE FOR GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION Economists have traditionally judged the state of an economy to be efficient if it is impossible to improve the welfare of any one member of society without harming someone else. Any economy that satisfies this condition is said to be Pareto efficient, after the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto who first gave rigorous attention to such questions (see Chapter 4.10). It is easy to see why an economy that fails to satisfy this condition could not be efficient; by definition, it would be possible to alter the allocation of resources in a way that improves everyone's welfare.' Much of the appeal of this weak efficiency criterion is that it avoids comparisons of levels of well being among different individuals. The cost of such generality, however, is that in any given economic system a wide array of different Pareto efficient states will typically be attainable. In the simple Robinson Cursoe economy of the undergraduate textbook, for example, efficiency could just as easily be attained in the case where most of the island's resources are owned by Friday as in the case where they are under Crusoe's control. However, the distribution of welfare among the two inhabitants would obviously be quite different in the two situations. Such equity issues cannot be settled on objective or scientific grounds. To decide which distribution of welfare is socially "best" an explicit value judgment is needed. It is useful to keep in mind the preceding distinction between efficiency and equity issues when analyzing the role of government in a market economy. Decentralized market processes will not necessarily result in a distribution of welfare that society considers just. Introduction Development of oil and gas is still centred in the Province of Alberta, much as it was when C. C. Ross read a paper on this subject three years ago at the Annual General Meeting in Montreal; but so far as gas is concerned, its early production in Saskatchewan seems now assured. The three years that have elapsed since Mr. Ross' paper have witnessed a growth in the world's production of oil that has created a potential supply out of all proportion to the demand for petroleum products, and one that has resisted the most energetic efforts of the industry entirely to control. The natural result has been very much to retard the active prospecting of new structures in the Prairie Provinces with any immediate view to oil production, although the same factor has not hindered the search for gas to the same extent. One consequence has been to divert the attention of organized oil operators from wildcat drilling to more detailed geological investigation than had hitherto been customary, sometimes accompanied by test drilling with a view to the elucidation of geological structure rather than to the immediate development of production which at the present is not needed. Nevertheless, in spite of the growth of this phase of oil prospecting - which the writer would be the last not to welcome as a very real blessing and of far greater value than indiscriminate wildcat drilling in either the complex structures of the foothills or the simpler but largely concealed formations of the plains- it is most satisfactory to have to record that in these three years the growth of production both of naphtha and the heavier crude-oil has kept pace with the by no means inconsiderable growth in the production and utilization of natural gas.

I HAVE read ill the Bulletin (May, '1914) a paper by H. von Höfer relating to the Origin of Petroleum, in which the author supports his and Engler's views, expressed before, of the organic origin of petroleum. Von Höfer pronounces strongly against the hypothesis of the volcanic origin of hydrocarbons, as particularly advocated by Eugene Coste. In Mr. Coste's articles, so well known by the public, he refers incidentally to our Mexican oil occurrences, especially of the Gulf coast, as proofs of the volcanic origin of the oils. This belief comes from the fact that, in our Mexican oil fields of the east coast, the majority of the producing wells are located near volcanic necks (remnants of small volcanoes, mainly of the explosive type), or near certain gibbosities in shales, resembling mounds, some of which' are really uplifts due to volcanic forces or to abortive eruptions. The first attempt to explain the oil coming up around volcanic necks in Mexico, was made by me in a small article1 published in 1905, soon after the investigation ordered by the Mexican government as to the outlook of the Mexican Gulf coast as a future oil producer. When E. L. Doheny of Los Angeles, Cal., and I located the first producing well of Mexico, I was also the first to predict the great future of the oil industry in Mexico, just at the time when the government and some Mexican geologists felt rather pessimistic. The Mexican investors and the general public, as a result of these discouragements, did not pay attention to this important source of common wealth until recent days. The realization of the value of this source of wealth has been so sudden that we are menaced by the consequences brought about by a great boom. It was quite impossible, about five years ago, to induce Mexican capitalists to invest money in oil lands. So the few large foreign companies operating since the beginning, easily secured large holdings, in spite of the trouble frequently resulting from faulty titles or ownership.

FOR more than 2500 years, natural gas issues in the Surakhany district of the Apsheron peninsula were the object of pilgrimages by fire worshippers and Hindoos from Burma and India. Even as late as 1890, Hindoo priests conducted ceremonies in a temple at Surakhany, which probably replaced a more ancient one; but later, the visits of the pilgrims were prohibited in order to check the spread of Asiatic diseases in that region. For centuries, limited supplies of oil have been abstracted from shallow excavations in the Caspian oil belt and dispatched into the interior of Asia and elsewhere for medicinal and industrial purposes. Statistics show a yield of 37,400 bbl. in 1863, but only since 1869 has there been serious development; in that year the yield was 203,000 bbl. At that time, hand digging was supplanted by drilling, and the enormous wells that resulted from tapping sources hitherto beyond the reach of operators completely demoralized the industry for a time, owing to inadequate outlets for the products. The early activities in this area were greatly hindered by annoying taxation, monopolies, imperial land grants, etc., but when these were revoked or adjusted, in 1877, the industry sprang into prominence and, between 1898 and 1901, the Baku fields produced practically one-half of the world's supply of oil. Within a few miles of Baku lie the two richest oil fields in the world; viz., the Balakhany-Saboontchy-Romany and the Bibi-Eibat, the latter constituting almost a suburb of the city. For many years the gasoline obtained in the refineries of the Baku area was burned in pits, being considered an undesirable product, and until 1870 the residue also was destroyed, its value as a fuel not being recognized. Kerosene was the main product sought by the refiners. It was shipped across the Caspian Sea and up the Volga to the industrial centers of Russia. IN ITS capacity for service to the public the oil industry is truly gargantuan. But it is only in this respect that the industry is the voracious, many-headed, many-armed and many-handed creature it has been so often painted by those who know it not too intimately and only from the outside. Contrasted sharply with the immensity of the service rendered is the relatively modest share of the national income which has gone to those who provided the tools and the mental and manual labor with which the service was performed. No doubt the relative meagreness of the re- ward was the result of a combination of fortuitous circumstances respecting the nature and accessibility of the industry's raw material and the extensive development and application of the most advanced technology, spurred by an intense competition.

WITHIN the past three weeks the price of crude oil in the Mid-Continent field has been cut 50 .per cent. Similar action has been taken, or probably, shortly will be taken, in most of the other fields of this country. This cut is very drastic. Is it justified? Some of the causes advanced for the cut are: that it is in line with the industrial downward readjustment now taking place throughout the country, and that there is an over-production of oil, which can best be slowed down by lowering the price of crude. In part, these two reasons are logically advanced, but such underlying causes as the great production- in Mexico have not been prominently brought forward nor the fact that it would be advantageous at this time to fill up the empty storage of many of the consuming companies at a low 'price. In order to properly comprehend the situation let us compare for a moment the production- of oil in the United' States and that in Mexico. Oil in the United States occurs in numerous often widely separated pools, varying in individual area, but each usually relatively extensive, compared to the area or gathering ground from which it is ultimately derived: It occurs in mod-erately porous reservoir rocks under such conditions of pressure, mobility and availability as to preclude its withdrawal except over a period of years-varying from 1 to at least 40 (average, say 15 years, depending on-the pool). One well will usually drain a limited area-2 to 10 acres-so that rate of withdrawal of oil under each owner's property is determined by the owner. - The important point to remember is that no matter how intensive the development, the oil reserves of -the United States cannot be materially exhausted' for at least 20 years, and the total available supply, not including shale oil, will probably require 50 to 75 years, or longer, for its withdrawal, the yearly rate of production decreasing slowly from this time on.

THE discovery of natural gas with naphtha in 1924 in the Upper Palaeozoic limestone of Turner Valley, 35 miles southwest of Calgary, has led to continuous developments in this field. Drilling undertaken soon after this discovery demonstrated that the anticlinal structure was in reality a major drag-fold cut off on the east side by a westerly inclined fault of large displacement. The faulted edge of the .limestone at depth determines the eastern limits of the field, which between 1924 and 1936 was shown to have a gas area 14 miles long by about 1 mile wide. Since the strata dip westerly, away from the axis of the fold, drilling becomes progressively deeper to the west and, with the advent of deeper drilling, crude oil was discovered in 1936 on the west flank of the structure but in the same porous reservoir rocks as the gas on the crest and upper parts of the fold. Since 1936, drilling has been undertaken wholly for the production of crude-oil and at present two producing areas have been found within the Turner Valley structure. The larger of these, at the south end of the field, in the vicinity of Highwood river, has a length of about 4 3/4 miles and a proved width of one mile, whereas the smaller, in the north end of the field, south of the north fork of Sheep river, has only a few producing wells.

Epithermal deposits have been defined as the lower temperature end of a spectrum of hydrothermal mineral deposits and are inferred to have formed near the EarthÆs surface. The preservation of an epithermal gold deposit in an Archaean craton is rather problematic, especially when such deposits form clusters or groups as reported for the Pilbara and Yilgarn cratons. For two of the better studied examples of epithermal gold deposits in these cratons, Becher and Wiluna, the evidence that they formed near the Earth surface is non-diagnostic, and the epithermal origin appears uncertain. Despite the simplicity of the original definition, there have been numerous errors in classifying epithermal gold deposits. It is suggested that these errors are primarily due to poor criteria defining the group as there is limited evidence of poor observational science being the cause. The criteria being used to recognise epithermal gold deposits include tectonic setting, ore element suite and quartz vein textures. None of these are diagnostic of epithermal deposits and their link back to the original low pressure-temperature definition of the class is tenuous. There has been definition creep over time as new observations on potential epithermal gold deposits become accommodated within a flexible definition. There is some urgency establishing and then using criteria to reliably identify epithermal deposits. Distinction of epithermal gold from weathered gold deposits is an important step. The development and use of short-lived radioactive tracer methods for the on-stream determination of residence time distributions in large-scale ball mills is described. Tests are reported on a pilot-plant ball mill with 0.43 m diameter and 0.86 m length and on an industrial mill with 1.83 m diameter and 2.74 m length. Tests with different tracer feed sizes indicate that the residence time distributions on both mills are independent of charge particle size. Similar tests are planned for a-large ball mill of 4.57 m diameter and 9.30 m length. No safety problems were encountered in these tests and none are anticipated in tests of the larger mill.
