Development work on the use of plasma torches in blast furnace ironmaking was completed in the 1980s. The technology developers planned to reduce blast furnace coke consumption using electrical energy and large scale coal injection through the tuyeres. Since this time, Westinghouse Plasma Corporation has improved torch reliability with industrial experience in solid-waste-to-energy facilities, as well as metallurgical applications. As coke makes up one-third of the hot metal cost, savings efforts frequently seek to lower coke consumption by increasing process efficiency or replacing coke with cheaper fuels. Alter NRG and Hatch assessed the merits of using plasma torch technology to superheat the hot blast. Coke rate savings, electrical purchase requirements, and a financial analysis to implement the torches are presented.

In 1974- COGEMA (Compagnie Generale des Matieres Nucleaires) of France decided to exploit a uranium deposit discovered several years ago in a Permian formation of Southern France, near the town of Lodeve (Herault). The uranium occurs in black shales with high calcium carbonate content (7-10% CO2) and it was then necessary to use alkaline leaching. A fine grind (60-65% minue 270 mesh) was also necessary to obtain good' uranium recovery. A minimum of fresh water must be added to the alkaline system due to solution recycling. Filtration must be used because cake-washing requires less fresh water than countercurrent decantation.

A sulfide ion selective electrode was used to control sulfidiser addition in the flotation testing of a synthetic and a naturally occurring ore containing malachite in order to compare the behaviour of sodium sulfide and calcium polysulfide. Both slug and controlled potential sulfidisation methods of addition were used. Under defined optimum CPS conditions, calcium polysulfide was a more effective sulfidising agent than sodium sulfide on the basis of both capital and operating costs. Surface and solution studies were used to compare the mechanism of each sulfidiser. For calcium polysulfide, XPS showed that polysulfide ions are adsorbed, whereas for sodium sulfide it is the hydrosulfide ions that are adsorbed on the mineral surface. For calcium polysulfide, the CuSx layer was believed to form on the malachite surface, which promoted the flotation of the malachite, by xanthate. Studies of surface morphology of the sulfidised malachite showed that a fairly uniform sulfidised layer is formed with both reagents. The use of sodium sulfide resulted in a thinner initial sulfidised layer compared to polysulfide at equivalent initial sulfur concentration.

The use or primary dross as a source for aluminum ion in the manufacture of aluminum sulfate offers opportunities for an inexpensive raw material. The aluminum sulfate industry in the US is a mature market with numerous small plants operating close to major users. The majority of manufacturers use either bauxite or aluminum oxide trihydrate as a source for the alum¬inum ion.. However, using process technology developed and patented by IWC, the oxides are removed from primary dross for use in manufacturing aluminum sulfate prior to metal recovery. This process offers the benefit of reducing costs for metal recovery. This paper discusses some of the methodology used in this process.

In 2004, LKAB decided to start a basic engineering study in expanding its existing production lines at the Malmberget mine site. It was expected that some of the production lines would become bottlenecks with reference to capacity. In this study, the sorting plant is examined and the results show that several unit operations will be limiting under current operating conditions. An additional purpose with the study was to investigate how replacement of some machines would influence performance and if production plans for the coming years might be achieved. Steady-state simulations using the software Modsim? were extensively used to study process performance for different operating conditions, such as iron content and size distribution in run-of-mine ore. Model parameters were derived from pilot plant data and when possible from ex-isting circuits. A complication for the simulations was the lack of relevant data and therefore some of the initial results were only indicative. The result shows that installation of new screens would give a much better operation, but also new crushers would be an improvement. This, since they can be run with full crusher chamber and tighter CSS. During 2007, most of the proposed remedies were implemented and the result is that the bottle-necks are gone, and the grades and material balances are even better than what was envisioned from the simulations.

This paper gives an overview of the ASHRAE LibHuAirProp, CoolProp and REFPROP software packages. These packages were predominantly developed for heating, refrigerating and air conditioning engineers and the refrigeration and steam power industries, although CoolProp and REFPROP also cover combustible gases. The main aim of this paper is to highlight the existence capabilities and status of the different packages and where they can be used. The paper gives typical examples of the use of these software packages, specifically as Excel add-ins, and provides a comparison of results of typical mine psychometric and gas drainage calculations using the packages and more traditional ventilation and gas drainage calculation methods. The paper also introduces a hybrid method that improves accuracy compared to traditional methods. In typical mine situations, the use of software packages is probably not required; however, with the increasing accuracy of instruments, potential greenhouse emission costs and the sale of mine gas, more accurate measurements and calculations can potentially save (or make) significant sums of money.CITATION:Harvey, T J M, 2015. Flotation work conducted by CSIRO on both single minerals and high-arsenic copper ores from a number of sources, has shown it is possible to produce separate low-arsenic copper concentrates and high-arsenic copper concentrates from high-arsenic copper ores. The procedure involves controlled separations at high or low pulp potential regions exploiting subtle differences in the flotation behavior of the arsenic-bearing and non-arsenic-bearing copper minerals. An overview of several case studies investigating the applicability of the controlled potential flotation approach to the separation of copper and arsenic from sulfide copper ores is presented. It highlights the variables which influence the efficiency of the separation which include mineralogy, liberation and reagent selection. The procedure can produce a saleable low-arsenic copper concentrate, which can be directly smelted without penalty, and a high-arsenic low copper concentrate, which will require further processing. "The QEMSCAN system is the third generation of automated mineral analysis systems that began with the QEM*SEM at CSIRO 30 years ago (Butcher et al. 2000). It is now a successful commercial instrument with 39 instruments in operation around the world. Back Scattered Electrons (BSE) and Energy Dispersive (EDS) X-Ray spectra are used to create digital mineral images with mineral identification occurring online. Low-count EDS spectra are used preferentially to BSE brightness, allowing minerals to be accurately identified by chemical composition. Individual minerals or groups of similar compositions are identified by comparison to a comprehensive mineral database incorporated into the QEMSCAN software. Optical mineralogy and Scanning Electron Microscopy is a metallurgists’ tool for determining the ore process mineralogy and delivering a better flowsheet. These techniques have limitations, provide limited information and sometimes fail to provide representative information. In contrast, QEMSCAN provides information on the nature and occurrence of all mineral species present plus the liberation characteristics, looking at thousands of particles in the sample presented. Some of the data presented includes:• Particle and grain sizes• Dominant mineral species• Particle shape• Calculated metal content• Density• Deportment of elements of interest between the mineral phases• Quantitative mineralogy• Mineral associations, locking and liberation• Textural relationships (particle images)It can also be used on concentrates, polished sections or drill core. This is a significant improvement in ore characterisation providing lithology, mineralogy, liberation, ore grade and porosity from a sample. Theoretical grade-recovery curves can be created to be mineralogically limited from QEMSCAN analysis which, when compared with metallurgical results, are valuable in evaluating whether liberation or chemical selectivity is driving flotation performance. A number of case study examples are given where the QEMSCAN had a significant bearing on future project development at an early stage of exploration and mine development."

SUMMARY RADIOACTIVE dynamite has been prepared by introducing a small amount of antimony-124 into the explosive. Test work is described on the effectiveness of this tracer, on radiation levels in its neighbourhood, and on different methods of .application. Factors determining the choice of isotope, amount of activity, and overall cost of this process are discussed. INTRODUCTION Instances are known in which dynamite remains unexploded in drill holes in mining operations. Usually such 'bootlegs' are easily located by inspection of the face and the powder is removed before subsequent drilling is started. Occasionally, however, serious accidents occur because workmen drill into an undetected piece of dynamite. In order to avoid such accidents it was suggested that a different method of location might be tied, such as that afforded by the use of radioactive tracers. This paper describes some experiments that were carried out under the auspices of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, with the active co-operation of Canadian Industries Ltd. and Canadian Refractories Ltd., to test the feasibility of such a scheme.

Results of work on the development of a phenomenological model for the continuous flotation process using short-lived radioactive tracer techniques for the determination of model parameters is reported. A model that incorporates a flotation first-order rate constant and a residence time distribution based on the cross flow finite state (CFFS) model has been derived and investigated. The short-lived radioactive tracer techniques necessary to extract the model parameters have been developed as have the necessary nonlinear search methods. The conditions under which all the model parameters can be extracted from a single radiotracer experiment are detailed and illustrated. A microcomputer-based unique data logging system has been designed, assembled, and implemented for collecting the necessary transient radiotracer data. Results are reported for a continuous laboratory flotation system for the two systems mica ore and coal.

"Free gold particles occur in many base metal and precious metal mines throughout the world. Due to the high density and malleability of gold, large circulating loads of free gold particles can build up over time in grinding circuits. This gold is often deposited in unintended traps throughout the mineral processing system.These unidentified free gold deposits represent a serious security risk as well as an inaccessible inventory of gold. Deposits of free gold particles often remain undetected by mine management until they are accidentally discovered while repairing mill equipment.Nuclear tracers have been used to determine the free gold recovery efficiency of gravity recovery equipment, drills, and sampling equipment (Clarkson, 1994, 1995; Walsh and Rao, 1986; Walsh and Kelly, 1992). In November, 1993, the author inspected the grinding circuit at La Mine Doyon in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec and made recommendations to recover coarse gold and to eliminate gold traps from the circuit. In 1995, the author salted mineral processing circuits with radioactive gold particles. The gamma and X-ray radiation from gold’s nuclear isotope (Au198) were detected through steel, in pipes, and in moving equipment using scintillometers. The radiotracers proved to be a safe, rapid and accurate method of identifying gold traps and improving security.Nuclear TracersWhen particles of gold are placed in a nuclear reactor, some of the gold atoms (Au197) absorb another neutron in their nucleus to form gold’s radioactive isotope (Au198). In the process of radioactive decay, this isotope emits high energy gamma rays and X-rays which are easily detected (even through steel) with scintillometers.Radioactive gold (Au198) has a very short halflife of 2.7 days. At the relatively low activity levels used for tracing, the particles remain detectable with a small hand-held scintillometer for about 10 to 14 days. After 14 days the irradiated gold is close to background levels and within two months it is essentially non-radioactive. The radiation has no effect on the recovery characteristics of the gold particles. The gold radiotracers are very safe due to their very low level of radiation, short half-life, and their inherent physical and chemical stability. However, the use and possession of even mildly irradiated gold is strictly licensed and regulated."

A number of open pit gold mines in Nevada extract ore from areas below natural groundwater elevations, necessitating dewatering and some method of disposal of the extracted water. These open pits extend well below the water table, with associated dewatering volumes greater than 10,000 gpm. Some mines, with large volumes of dewatering water to manage, have constructed re-infiltration basins to re-introduce dewatering water to the groundwater system some distance from the pits. This paper presents an overview of the state of the art of re-infiltration projects, including the permit process for such projects in Nevada, and the necessary engineering considerations.

Laboratory and pilot-plant testing using a sample of gold-bearing semi-oxidized ore from a Russian deposit followed by a flow sheet and reagent flotation mode development to design a plant was carried out in IRGIREDMET in 2009-2010. According to the developed flow sheet low alkaline flotation conditions are recommended in order to activate the surface of sulfides. The pH lowering from natural (7.5-8.0) to optimal (4.6-4.8) value using sulfuric acid provides for an increase in gold recovery. Before CIL, a final flotation concentrate is pretreated using pressure oxidation. It was found that the use of recycled solutions from pressure liberation in order to create acidic conditions for flotation instead of sulfuric acid during pilot-plant testing is recommended. The flow sheet offers the detoxification of remaining pressure oxidation solutions together with the flotation tailings. The carbonates presented in the tailings significantly reduce the consumption of lime for detoxification and allows for the use of two tailings dams instead of three. The first is used for the tailings of flotation and pressure oxidation recycled solutions, which were detoxified together. The second tailings dam is used for detoxified cyanidation cakes of the flotation concentrate. It was found during pilot-plant testing that flotation under natural and acidic conditions provides for 88.9 percent and 93 percent gold recovery, respectively. 4.1Au percent increase recovery was achieved due to the reduction of gold losses with flotation tailings and better quality of concentrates.

Recent sinkhole activity in carbonate terranes of Alabama has resulted in damage to transportation lines, structures, utility lines, and property in general. Active sinkhole development and subsidence has been well documented in Alabama, Florida, Pennsylvania, and South Africa. An excellent example of the potential danger resulting from this activity is the spectacular collapse under a South African gold ore crusher plant that resulted in the death of 29 men in 1962. Due to the severity of the problem in certain localized areas in Alabama, a detailed investigation is being undertaken by the Geological Survey of Alabama and the U. S. Geological Survey. One of the most promising techniques is the application of aerial photography and thermal infrared imagery. Conventional and modern remote-sensing techniques are being used in Alabama to locate and define areas of sinkhole activity and to determine which areas are most prone to its occurrence.

Run-out analyses of tailings storage facilities are typically undertaken using methods based on rheological theory. These are reasonable techniques to model the behaviour of tailings that, through significant run-out and possibly mixing with supernatant water, are generally acting in a fluidised manner. Such modelling often follows on from two-dimensional continuum analysis models where, if failure is predicted, grid failure often occurs when deformations begin to increase. This results in a disconnect between the prediction of failure and the modelling of the potential extent of the failure.Recently, rezoning methods have been incorporated into commercially available two-dimensional soil mechanics deformation codes. Rezoning techniques enable large deformations to be modelled within a two-dimensional continuum analysis framework; however, while promising, the use of such tools is not yet widespread, and a consensus is yet to develop on how they should be applied to tailings dam run-out modelling.This paper uses FLAC rezoning techniques to model the flow behaviour of two historic tailings dam failures. The purpose of these analyses is to critically assess the performance of rezoning against some available historic failures. The required data to undertake such an analysis is outlined, along with the inherent limitations and assumptions required. Parametric analyses are outlined to address some of these issues. In general, the analyses undertaken underestimated the flow distance observed in the historic failures by varying degrees; however, in some instances, the analysis reasonably reproduced the qualitative shape of the initial failure zone. A variety of potential reasons for the discrepancy between historical observations and the models undertaken are provided.CITATION:Reid, D, 2015. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has investigated the use of rheology to provide insight into the mechanism of flocculation. A technique developed by Tattersall has been modified and used to explain the flocculation of calcium montmorillonite with polyethylene oxide. The results indicated that there are two types of bond systems operating during the flocculation sequence. Also, flocculation results are highly dependent on the shear rate and the amount of polymer added.

The use of rice husk ash as aggregate for foundry sand mould production has been studied. 5 –25wt% rice husk ash was added to the sand mixture. The chemical, physical and mechanical properties measured include: chemical analysis of the rice husk ash, particle size, density, permeability, compatibility mouldability, moisture content, green compression and shear strength, dry compression and shear strength. The result revealed that, addition of rice husk ash to River Niger Silica sand, increased the mouldability, compatibility, grain fineness number, both green and dry strength, slightly decreased the density, permeability and moisture content. The result shows that better properties is achievable by the addition of rice husk ash to River Niger silica sand and can be used to enhance the mould properties of foundry sand.

Rigid inclusions were used to support roadway fills and mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls for the South Capitol Street Corridor project. The first phase of this two-phase, nearly $1 billion project will include the replacement of the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge, including two approach ovals east and west of the Anacostia River, the replacement of the I-295/Suitland Parkway Interchange, and the construction of several traffic ramps. The bridge itself carries over 70,000 drivers daily and is expected to open in 2021. Ground improvement is required over a portion of the project footprint. Within the ground improvement area, the construction includes MSE walls up to 35 feet high and embankment fills up to 28 feet for which CMC rigid inclusions (RIs) were used to mitigate settlement and stability. The proposed construction runs over multiple old, in-service utilities that the project requirements indicate could not tolerate any stress or settlement due to the construction. As such, solutions that spanned the utilities were required. A concrete slab of varying thickness was used to span a fragile 108-inch-diameter sewer pipeline and 48- inch-square-precast-concrete box beams were used to span twin utilities that were buried just a few feet below current working grades on site. Unreinforced RIs were used to support these structures. The center to center spacing of the RIs perpendicular to the pipe run was 26.5 ft for the concrete slab and 62 feet for the precast--concrete box beams. The axial forces on the RIs were up to 267 kips. The RIs were not structurally connected to the slab or box beams. A single-element load test was performed to confirm the load-carrying capacity of the RIs. This paper will focus on the utility protection slab over the twin utilities and provide an overview of the design of the structural and geotechnical solutions and will present the results of the load test performed. INTRODUCTION The new Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge (FDM Bridge) and reconstruction of the Suitland Parkway/ I-295 interchange (South Capitol Project) is a part of the Anacostia Waterfront Initiative (AWI) Program, whose goal is to transform the shores of the Anacostia River. The existing FDM Bridge is approximately 70-years old and has been classified as “functionally obsolete”. The completed South Capitol Project will improve the multi-modal transportation options, increase pedestrian and vehicular safety and provide additional green space. The proposed FDM Bridge, a rendering of which is shown in Fig. 1, is designed to become a landmark bridge in the Washington, D.C. area.

It is very rare in the underground hard rock environment to find a deposit that is ideally suited to a specific mining method. Usually the irregular shape of the orebody will allow the deposit to be extracted by more than one mining method. During the prefeasibility stage, a number of conceptual mine designs are generally evaluated to see which offers the best method of extraction for the deposit. The selected method is usually based on key decision criteria such as the overall extraction of the orebody, the amount of metal produced annually and the unit cost of production. Often the prefeasibility study document will state that the project has an NPV of æxÆ million dollars. This statement can be made without any quantitative consideration of the likely risks of the mining methods reviewed or the level of confidence in the estimation of the NPV. By assigning a probability of failure to each component of the mining cycle a measure of the risk for each method can be determined. One mining method may provide the highest NPV when it is performing well, however, there may be a higher risk of a major failure impacting on the performance of that method, eg the failure of a mass blast of a crown or rib pillar. This paper will present a flowsheet approach to the use of risk analysis for determining the likely production rates of different mining methods. This framework allows the annual metal output to be estimated and from this the NPV for each method. A level of confidence can be applied to the estimated NPV for each option. An example will be presented on how this technique has been used within the Normandy Group.

The first step in the quarrying of granite, following removal of any overburden material, involves the freeing of large blocks from the formation. For many years the use of explosives was the accepted method of obtaining these blocks. Even today there are operations where this is considered to be the most economical method even though it does result in a high percentage of damaged stone. In more recent times the preferred procedure at most quarries has been to produce a continuous vertical cut or slot completely around the block to be separated. Originally, this was done by drilling a series of closely spaced holes around the block and breaking the web between the holes with a chisel-like tool known as a broaching bar. The machine used in this mechanical method of producing the relief slot is known as the channel bar. The modern day approach to the production of continuous channels was introduced to the industry around 1955 by the Linde Division of Union Carbide Corporation. The method employs a small rocket - jet burner producing a high temperature, high velocity exhaust flame which when directed against the granite causes it to disintegrate. This method, which has come to be known as "Jet Channeling", is now used by practically every major granite producer in the United States and Canada.
